Baby Maddy one step closer to home By Sue NewmaN

When Maddy Flanagan cries mum Kylie Hende smiles, she knows those cries mean her seven week old daughter is thriving and that’s something Kylie and partner Caleb Flanagan have never taken for granted. Maddy was born with mitral valve regurgitation and an emphysemic lobe on her left lung. That meant surgery and time in Auckland’s Starship hospital. But next week, that could all change as Maddy and Kylie are scheduled to take a giant step closer to their Ashburton home – relocation to Christchurch Hospital. For Kylie, partner Caleb and her sons Regan and Caleb, the weeks since Maddy’s birth have been tough, with mother and daughter in Christchurch Hospital and then in Auckland and Kylie’s mum, Karen Breakwell, becoming a fulltime carer for her grandsons. Maddy underwent mitral valve repair surgery a week before Christmas and is likely to require further surgery once she is older

and stronger but she’s now growing, able to feed and is constantly smiling, Kylie said. Post-surgery Maddy was on a respirator, but with that removed she’s rediscovered her voice. “Now she’s got it back, she’s really using it to her advantage.” When you have a baby who is very sick, it’s fantastic to hear her cry, to watch her smile and to be able to interact with her, Kylie said. “She’s an absolute cutie.” While Kylie has rarely left Maddy’s side since her birth, Christmas brought its moments of joy, with the family reunited when the Angel Flight Charity flew partner Caleb, sons Regan and Caleb and mum Karen to Auckland. “My boys were so excited to see me and they gave me big hugs. At Ronald McDonald House they put on a huge Christmas meal and the boys were completely spoiled.” Watching her family return home, however, was pretty tough, but knowing they’ll shortly be within driving distance has meant the new year is starting on the best possible note, she said.
Space camp funding When Ashburton College teacher Heena Shah travelled to a space camp in America she did so with support from three of the Ashburton District’s service clubs. In addition to Ashburton Lions she was funded by the Rotary Club of Ashburton and Ashburton Plains Rotary.
Diving death Specialist police divers were sent to the Bay of Islands yesterday to help with the extraction of a diver who failed to surface near Moturoa Island. Senior sergeant Ryan Gray said the alarm was raised about 8.30am yesterday morning after the diver struck trouble near Moturoa Island, in the Bay of Islands. The Police Maritime Unit, a commercial dive boat and the Northland Rescue Helicopter attended the scene. The diver was confirmed deceased in the water after 10am. Police said the death will be referred to the Coroner. - NZME

No hosing restrictions – yet By Sue NewmaN

One of the few benefits of an early summer marked by more wet than sunny days could be the lack of hosing restrictions for Ashburton gardeners. Most years hosing restrictions have been introduced by Christmas but this year they’ve only just made it onto the watch list, Ashburton District Council service delivery manager Neil McCann said. While consumption rose on Thursday when the temperature
inched towards 30°C, with rain predicted tomorrow, McCann said he anticipated consumption would drop again. That didn’t mean restrictions were off the radar, however, he said. “We’re monitoring and checking every morning and we’ll look at it again on Monday.” Restrictions are usually in place by this time but this year it was a different story, he said. Over the past 10 years hosing restrictions have been introduced as early as December 3,
but every year has seen alternate day hosing in place well before Christmas. In 2015 the council trialled a hosing restriction-free summer, hoping an education programme aimed at encouraging gardeners to water at optimum times would keep consumption down. Restrictions returned the following year. There have been downsides, however, to an extraordinarily wet start to summer McCann said and these are showing up
in rapidly growing grass and sprouting weeds around Ashburton and the district’s villages. “We’ve had pretty perfect conditions for weeds and grass in parks and roadsides.” Rain in the days before Christmas and then plenty of heat over the holiday break meant parts of the district were looking a bit untidy, but council staff and contractors would be back on deck on Monday and would start catching up on outstanding mowing and weed spraying, he said.
What a way to start the New Year. A 19-year-old man from Timaru was arrested at 12.01am on January 1 for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Queenstown. Police say the man approached the sergeant from behind near The Mall and hit him in the head, knocking off his hat. He then attempted to run off with it. The man was charged and due to appear in Queenstown District Court on January 7. – NZME
Police dog at work Police dog Caesar is sporting a few scars after being stabbed in the head but the canine crime fighter has been cleared to hit the beat again. The 21-month-old dog was allegedly stabbed twice in the head after “a vicious struggle” with a man on December 22 at 6.30am. – NZME

Farming stalwart calls it a day By Tim Cronshaw

T
he Ashburton office of Federated Farmers won’t be quite the same now that farming stalwart Kevin Geddes has called it a day. Geddes, 80, put his heart and soul into supporting the farming community for decades, latterly as a part-time policy analyst for the federation. So when he “retired’’ on December 21, his departure marked the end of an era at the corner office on West Street. Judging by a long list though, it will be a short-lived retirement. A good portion of his time, he suspects, will be taken up with following his son’s aviation career and being astride a ride-onmower at his daughter-in-law’s function venue and their country garden. Federated Farmers’ newest life member will continue managing the trust that owns several buildings, including the site of the branch office. The workaholic will be involved in other charitable trusts, extending his long service with many non-profit groups and has already turned down other “opportunities’’ as the list grows uncontrollably. The concept of him sitting at home would be a “total disaster’’ for him and his wife, Lorraine, he admits. A full life in farming and working alongside rural support trusts, community groups and Federated Farmers has brought immense satisfaction. “I have no regrets – I would do the same again in a heartbeat. I won’t slow down too much. I never expected to reach the age 80. How do you know?” He survived a cancer scare and feels fortunate to be part of a blessed generation. “Our food is better, our lifestyle is better and when you read history and old diaries of our forebears, we are extremely fortunate. There’s no such thing as luck – there is good fortune – which is improved through work. If I have anything going into retirement it’s that I do not intend to stop working. That’s what life is all about.’’ Geddes left the farm in 1998. He had been involved with Federated Farmers leading up to then, starting as a 21-year-old as a provincial executive representative for the Otago/Southland Council of Young Farmers Club in 1960. “I was young then and knew everything and they were a lot of old duffers. It’s been downhill since then steadily. That was my first involvement and it’s wisdom now, the wisdom of ages,’’ says a self-mocking Geddes. He rose through the elected ranks to sit on the national meat and wool executive and in his fifties was vice president of the Mid Canterbury branch. Farming was difficult enough without adding the many responsibilities of representing Federated Farmers and the endless phone calls and meetings that entailed, particularly during the challeng-
ing 1980s. “I was aged 50 at that stage. I say that this was something that I had to do. My family say it was hormones, a middle-aged crisis. Essentially we were in a mess.’’ Federated Farmers had been arguing, from the late 1970s, that New Zealand had to become more market related otherwise its internal costs would choke rural and urban exporting. Then the Labour government outflanked the National Party to win the 1984 election and introduced Rogernomics and brought about a market focus and exposed the New Zealand economy to global trade. The party set about removing tariffs, reforming the labour market, abolishing transport regulations and floating the dollar. The dollar was expected to “float like a stone’’ but it revalued 30 per cent in the other direction. Geddes said the sequencing of the reform changes was flawed during a period of hyper-inflation, a rising dollar resulting in a huge capital inflow into New Zealand which led to the day the New Zealand stock market crashed, October 20, 1987, and which wiped out millions of dollars. Drought did not help. The result was a lot of farmer pain. In Mid Canterbury the export barley industry was wiped out totally because of the revaluation. Many small businesses exporting to Australia went broke. Any farmer with too much debt was left vulnerable. Some of them had to up stakes and move on. Geddes became the rural co-ordinator of the New Zealand Rural Trust and did what he could to help farmers rebuild their lives. Leading up to then, Geddes had run the family sheep and beef operation, Braeside, in Maniototo from 1962 until moving to Carew, on 355 hectares, in 1973. The mixed cropping and sheep and beef farm was renamed Braeside and they put in borderdyke irrigation – 100 acres a year which “damn near killed me’’ and set up a dairy unit in 1984. Later spray irrigation was installed. Then in 1980 they sold some of the farm, keeping the dairy unit and putting sharemilkers on, and bought Cracroft for cropping and sheep and beef farming. “We covered just about every farming enterprise at that time but the decade of the 1980s was pretty tough and we certainly weren’t exempt from that by any means.’’ They got through this troubling phase, later downsizing the farming operations, selling Cracroft in 1990 and keeping the dairy unit. When a year-long contract with the rural trust finished, the provincial president came to him and suggested he next take up the reins. Geddes replied he would rather work in policy than admin’ and he became the chief executive of Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers. Another chapter as a policy analyst followed, and he and Lorraine, happily moved from the dairy unit to Ashburton 15 years ago, theoretically at retirement age. Geddes received a Queen’s Ser-
vice Medal in the 2017 New Year’s Honours for services to agriculture and the community. He remains a staunch farming supporter, citing rural-urban communication, biosecurity and the environment as his main “not concerns, but acknowledgements of the reality of life’’. “We need to keep teaching our children that we are all linked to the soil and we may not move away from the soil because it’s our heritage and we must look after that.’’ New Zealanders have to be constantly on guard for more pest and disease incursions as an island nation that already has a record of unwanted arrivals putting pressure on agriculture. “My generation drained the swamps and there will always be a balance but we must be pragmatic. Actually, by simply blocking up the drains we can returns the swamps back if that is what society wants. But of course you have property issues – who’s swamp is it? “And, if you are going to expect a farmer to bear the cost of returning the land to swampland are you going to impose constraints on farming that have the potential to make farming unsustainable financially? That will always be a tension point. … In retirement I shall be watching.’’ He’s unlikely to ever completely shake off the policy analyst inherent in him, even in retirement, says Geddes, who is of Scottish and French heritage. “The French wants to drink the wine and the Scottish doesn’t want to pay for it – life is full of balances and tensions.’’

Year of wild weather
In one of Mid Canterbury’s wettest years ever, there were floods, unseasonal snow and even a tornado. Susan Sandys takes a look back at a year of wild weather.
M
id Cantabrians mostly splashed their way through 2018, but it was not without its hot spells. Temperatures soared over 34°C in Mid Canterbury at the end of January, making conditions tough for those working outside in the sun. Builders on sites throughout the district drank plenty of water and some even ordered in iced drinks and went home early. At Ashburton Intermediate School, a welcoming powhiri planned for 2.15pm for new students was postponed until a cooler day. Associate Health Minister Julie Anne Genter put out a press
release at the time saying that the Ministry of Health was starting to plan for hotter summers and was developing a nationwide Heat Health Plan. “Climate change means summer temperatures are expected to rise across both the North and South Island, increasing the risk of heat stress and subtropical diseases,” she said. They were risks Mid Cantabrians did not have to worry about for too long. On February 1, Mt Hutt staff reported five centimetres of snow as ex-tropical cyclone Fehi passed the South Island, leading to an outbreak of cold, southerly winds.
Niwa meteorologist Seth Carrier said summer’s extremes were mainly due to La Nina, causing hot and settled weather early in the season. This heated the ocean, contributing to the warm temperatures. Climate change was also likely to be a factor. “Climate change is kind of in the background of everything at this point,” he said. The big wet began in earnest and overall Ashburton had its third highest rainfall for February since records began in 1909. By March, Niwa reported Ashburton had received more than twice its average rainfall over summer, with 362 millimetres, the second
highest level since records began in 1909. In April Ashburton received almost three times its average rainfall for the month. There was about 153mm, compared to the long-term average of 52mm. The sogginess was followed by fogginess, and for the first half of June meteorologists such as Graham Taylor at Graham’s Weather Station had barely a ray of sunshine to measure. “There’s been barely any sun, and very little rain,” Taylor said at the time. Niwa figures showed that for the first half of June Ashburton recorded just 24.5 hours of sun-

in Mid Canterbury shine. The lack of rainfall occurring at the same time heralded the beginning of what was to be a dry winter. Dairy farmers had good conditions for calving as Ashburton received just 34.6mm of rainfall during August, well below normal compared to the long-term average of 61.6mm. Early September Mt Hutt received it largest one-day snowfall for the ski season so far, when 25cm fell, but it was not enough to turn off the snowmakers. Manager James McKenzie described the quarter-metre fall as “quite awesome”, and an easily
managed amount. Mt Hutt went on to have a good season regardless of it being a lean-snow year, with the lack of blizzards contributing to fewer closed days and high skier numbers. Then mid-October a storm dropped 45cm. Management may have felt Mother Nature was messing with them as just three days out from closing she had at last delivered the snowfall they had been waiting for all season. Despite not being able to open until 12.30pm on the Saturday, management rated it the best closing weekend ever as huge crowds flocked to enjoy the fresh powder

conditions. Once winter was over, the rain returned. It was the second wettest November in Ashburton since records began in 1909, contributing to Ashburton recording its third wettest ever spring. Snow flurries occurred in Mid Canterbury early in the month, leading residents to wonder whether they might ever see the sun again. The sodden conditions took their toll on the district’s roads as numerous potholes opened up and sunshine bridges were washed out. High river levels imperilled populations of endangered birds

nesting on the Ashburton River as they were forced to hold off in trying to hatch eggs and raise young until later in the season. In mid-November Ashburton hit headlines when a tornado struck near the town. Farmer Randal Hanrahan was outside enjoying north-easterly conditions when he felt a southerly blow through and was aghast at seeing the dust devil form. “It was freakish what it did and didn’t touch,” he said as he recounted the experience. The twister upended irrigators, a tractor and mower as it moved within 25 metres of his house. Leading up to Christmas Mid
Canterbury’s wild weather story continued, as a freak thunderstorm struck Methven on December 22. Flooding threatened Methven homes and businesses and the town’s fire brigade had to pump water building up in surrounding areas. Sun over Christmas was to be followed by cloud and a few showers with southerlies on Boxing Day, so it seems Mid Canterbury’s weather woes continue. Rainfall levels for the year as of December 23 had tipped over the millennium mark, at 1009.2mm. Here’s hoping for sunshine as we head further into 2019!

Just a simple wish By HeatHer Mackenzie Sandy Scott and her daughters Lauren and Gemma granted Margaret Spicer‘s wish of a shopping trip to The Warehouse. Margaret certainly looked in her element, browsing amongst the clothing racks, checking out the Christmas goodies and chatting to people she knew. Some time ago Margaret decided that driving wasn’t for her anymore. That prompted her to give her car away to a family member and invest in a mobility scooter. “The scooter is perfect for me. I can get
most places, however I find crossing busy roads too daunting so I pretty much just stay on my side of town,” she said. “This is such a welcome treat for me as I can’t remember the last time I was in here.” The little group built up an instant rapport so much so it looked like they had known each other for years, rather than the 15 minutes or so it took to drive to the Warehouse. Gemma pointed out a black and white mini skirt to Margaret. “You could wear this on Christmas Day.” “Oh goodness Gemma, it’s been years since I wore anything like that!” Margaret replied.

By HeatHer Mackenzie When Katelyn Hogg and Katie Polenar arrived to grant Betty’s window cleaning wish, she told them that she had some unwanted festive season visitors, mice in her conservatory. “I know they are there as they keep eating my pet canary Charlie’s birdseed,” she said. “We can help you sort that,” Katelyn said. A quick phone call to the Guardian office and Betty was the proud owner of two new mouse traps, which Katelyn then set up around the house. Betty was very impressed. “To date I’ve
caught four mice – Mum, Dad, Granddad and Grandma. Hopefully that’s the lot,” she said. “I’m so grateful to the girls for helping me, I knew the mice where there, but I couldn’t set the traps myself.” In the true spirit Christmas wishes Katelyn also helped Betty sort out how to operate her newly installed heat pump. “It’s like a foreign language to me. I have absolutely no idea how to turn it on or anything about it,” Betty said. Thanks to Katelyn, Betty now has clearly written instructions detailing how to turn it on, how to adjust the temperature and how to turn it off.

Wishing for a whiter than white fan. For quite a while Val could see that the blades on her ceiling fan needed cleaning, but she couldn’t do it herself. “Back in the day I was able to climb the ladder to reach, but unfortunately things and knees change,” she said with a laugh. It was husband Barry’s job to clean the kitchen fan but since he died four years ago the job’s been left undone. Thankfully, due to the Ashburton Guardian’s Christmas wishes and Guardian staff member Steve Stratford, her ceiling fan soon received its long awaited spruce up. It’s now whiter than white. “The Christmas wishes for the Elderly idea is just magic,” Val said. “I cannot thank everybody enough. There are so many little jobs like this that people just cannot do. Having somebody come in, with a cheery smile to lend a helping hand is very much appreciated.”

Honours for former Mid Cantabrians While they may no longer live in the Ashburton District, two people with strong ties to the district were among those honoured in this year’s New Year Honours. Ruth Putze
Former Methven woman, Ruth Putze (nee Currie), received a New Zealand Distinguished Service Decoration for services to the New Zealand Defence Force. Putze, a former head girl at Mt Hutt was posted to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) from July 2015 to February 2016, and served as the Chief of the Observer Group in Lebanon, as well as the Senior National Officer for the New Zealand contingent. In this role she was responsible for all UNTSO operations within Lebanon, the safety of the military Observer Group personnel under her command, and for maintaining liaison and a cooperative working environment between the Observer Group, the United Nations Interim Observer Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), other UN agencies and local communities. As one of only two female commanders serving in the Middle East (both with UNTSO) and the only one in South Lebanon, her
Ruth Putze and her Distinguished Service Decoration medal. exceptional performance has made her a role model for women throughout UNIFIL and UNTSO. Her work ethic and ability to build relationships with her counter-parts and seniors across more than 40 troop-contributing nations, as well as community leaders and members of the national military forces, were significant factors in the success of her command.

JUST A STORY
Following a story that starts as a missing person alert and becomes a full-blown murder inquiry is about more than cold hard facts; when it’s in your own home town it becomes a whole lot more. For Guardian reporter Sue Newman (right) the Kirsty Bentley story became more than a job, it became, and still is, part of her life.
N
ew Year’s Day 1999 dawned hot, very hot. The heavy early morning air promised a day that would be a scorcher, a day for seeking water and shade. Good for doing nothing much. I’d drawn the unlucky marble. While others in the news team were taking it easy, I was on call. Traditionally the New Year beat in Ashburton is a non-event. You could count on a few calls to emergency services, a few minor offences to follow up, a few photos of holiday activities to take and that would be it. Easy day at the office. But not 1999. Very early that morning the phone rang. It was a friendly cop. “Just thought you might be interested, a teenager didn’t return home last night. We’ve set up a search around the river bed area.
Might be a few photos in it if you were keen...” That a teen hadn’t made it home after a New Year’s Eve party wasn’t unusual. It might be something to keep an eye on. A few questions, however, indicated this one might be different. The teenager was just 15. She hadn’t been seen since early evening the day before. She was a kid who would not simply disappear. Her parents were worried and her friends were also worried. Kirsty Bentley was not a kid who’d run away. She was a homebody. Add to that, her dog was missing too – dog and girl, last seen walking towards the Ashburton River bed. The day had suddenly got interesting. Pad, pen, camera and a trip to the search site. Hours later, interviews with
friends, family and police filed. Kirsty was still missing. Her dog and her knickers were not. They’d been found and fears for her safety ramped up. Within hours, the teen who’d stayed out too late became a teen who could be in trouble. Twenty years ago, when it came to major crime, Ashburton was something of a sleepy hollow, but as the hours, then the days ticked by, the word missing was being replaced with murder. A missing person in Ashburton becomes personal, they’re one of our own. The cops, the media, the search teams and the family, most knew one another and that meant Kirsty’s disappearance was never going to be just another story. Journalists are supposed to be unemotional recorders of events. In this case that was impossible. For the Guardian team, Kirsty and
her family became very close to our hearts. Over many days I spent hours with Sid and Jill. Sometimes they talked. Sometimes we simply sat in silence and I watched as they folded under the weight of grief. And I watched and worried for them as they suffered through the agonies of unwanted media attention, as they dealt with the growing awareness that Kirsty may never come home. It was gut-wrenching stuff. It was a time of high emotion for everyone involved in the search. Tears weren’t reserved for the family and Kirsty’s friends. They became common currency for media too. The toll Kirsty’s disappearance took on Sid, Jill and son John was clear in the way each withdrew and became wrapped in their personal sorrow. They became a
family that grief all but destroyed. As the days ticked by rumour, innuendo and cruel gossip did the rest. Through the 18 days that she was missing her family held on to a tiny sliver of hope that she might be found alive. That hope died when her body was found in the Rakaia Gorge. Grief took on a new shape. The search for Kirsty became the search for a killer. As the anniversaries of her death ticked by, Kirsty never became just another story for the Guardian team, she and her family remained people we cared about. As Jill and Sid’s lives reshaped we never forgot them. Twenty years down the track, Kirsty’s story is still in my heart, the hours I spent with Jill and Sid are burned in my memory. Sid has died, Jill has moved on, but Kirsty has not been forgotten.

20 years on, we may yet get an answer On New Year’s Eve 20 years ago Kirsty Bentley went missing. Reporter Kurt Bayer profiles the case as the anniversary of her tragic disappearance is marked.
T
he cold case file amounts to more than 70 archive boxes containing 400 folders of documents and evidence. Twenty years since murdered Ashburton schoolgirl Kirsty Marianne Bentley went missing while walking her dog, it remains one of New Zealand’s highest-profile murder mysteries. It still fascinates, chills and divides Mid Cantabrians. Locals are quick to offer a theory or toss out a name of a likely suspect. In the late 90s, genetic crime solving was in its infancy. But now, Detective Inspector Greg Murton believes that advances in modern DNA testing techniques could crack open the case. The dog leash found around the dog’s neck – tying her to a tree at the Ashburton riverbank 50km away from where Kirsty’s body was later found – along with underwear found nearby will be included in new tests to be carried out by scientists at the Institute of Environmental Science and Research, New Zealand’s Crown Research Institute, in Auckland. “The case is still open and being investigated,” Murton said “With the new forensic testing we are hopeful to get the right result for the family even after all these years. There have been other cases recently where murders that are 20 years old have been solved through DNA or other reasons, so we’re forever hopeful.” DNA profiling – a process of identifying a specific pattern of DNA from a person or sample of bodily tissue – has revolutionised forensic science and global crime investigation. In New Zealand, there have been several high-profile examples where DNA has nailed criminals decades after they thought they were scot-free. In 1995, in a joint project involving police and ESR, New Zealand created the National DNA Profile Databank. It involved the collection of DNA profiles from convicted offenders and volunteers on to a central database that is matched against DNA profiles obtained from unsolved crimes in an attempt to “identify any individual that could be linked to an offence through biological material left at the crime scene”. Testing has advanced since and the new techniques will be applied to the evidence from Operation Kirsty. In 2002, Jules Mikus was jailed for life after DNA evidence linked him to the savage rape and murder of Napier schoolgirl Teresa Cormack 15 years earlier. It was also the downfall of

Jarrod Allan Mangels. After a drunken Nelson night out in 2003, Mangels was asked to give a blood sample. His DNA was later found to match the DNA found on nail clippings from Maureen McKinnel who was strangled at her Arrowtown home on Boxing Day 1987 and dumped naked over the Arrow River Bridge. Murton, who took charge of the unsolved crime file case in 2014, is hopeful for some test results
by the end of the year. But he cautioned that final answers still may be some way off – if they are ever found. “It’s such a fine level of testing. [ESR] have to interpret those results and then look at where we go from there,” he says. “More sensitive testing methods are great, but at the end of the day we still need a suspect to test this against.” Over the years, hundreds of
local men have been spoken to by police during Operation Kirsty, including her brother John and ex-Royal Navy sailor father Sid, whose movements on New Year’s Eve were vague, and whose story later changed. Both said police treated them as suspects and vehemently denied any involvement, with Sid doing so right up to his death in June 2015, aged 64. One theory doing the rounds was that John had killed his sister
and that his father helped him dump the body. He has said detectives appeared to think he was jealous of his sister because she had a boyfriend. In March last year, Murton confirmed he was looking at double Ashburton Work and Income killer Russell Tully as a possible suspect. The former local diesel mechanic was ruled out after Murton quizzed him behind bars and came away satisfied with his alibi. Kirsty’s mother Jill Peachy is kept up-to-date on the case by Murton. She’s aware of the new DNA testing and that it’s helped catch killers years down the line. But she long ago ceased holding her breath. “If it’s going to be, it will,” she said “I just hope the killer is sweating that one day they will be caught. continued over page

There’s been nothing to show me what happened.” December 31, 1998, had been a balmy day in town. Kirsty – a well-rounded, sensible, giggly girl who loved drama studies, poetry, choir singing, the Backstreet Boys, her boyfriend and friends – had been lounging in the library. She then did some shopping with best friend Lee-Anne Jellyman, grabbing lunch at McDonald’s, and popping in to see a friend at the dairy. She would never know it, but she’d done better than she expected in her fifth-form exams and was loving what was turning out to be a long, hot summer. A pool party was being planned for her 16th birthday on January 18. She was bursting with excitement at the prospect of boyfriend Graeme Offord coming for dinner that night, with plans for him to stay over. At about 2.30pm, she arrived back at the family’s South Street home before taking her black labrador-cross Abby for a stroll while her brother John, then 19, listened to music in his bedroom. He remembers thinking Kirsty had been gone for a while but didn’t think too much of it. “These sorts of things aren’t supposed to happen, so the idea of something bad happening to Kirsty was not even in my mind,” he says. “Mum came home and I asked her about it, expecting her to know. When she had a puzzled look on her face, I was a bit surprised.” But on arriving home, mother Jill felt something was wrong. Over the previous few months, she’d felt an unexplained dread that “somehow my little girl was at risk”.
Quizzing John, she noticed Abby’s dog lead was missing from the stool by the back door where Kirsty usually dropped it. Jill headed towards the river, and as panic swept over her, she started running. But as she got near Abby’s favourite swimming hole, she turned around and ran home. The Bentleys’ modest red brick home is just two doors down from the broad Chalmers Avenue, where the teen turned left with Abby in tow and wandered just a few hundred metres down the road that runs into a dead-end for motorists, and into the riverbank. The river tracks have since been upgraded for mountainbikes and include one-way loops. Just off the trails, the bush is dense and
At 8am the next morning, an official search and rescue operation was launched. They scoured the Ashburton riverbank and after just two hours, they heard barking. A dehydrated Abby was found tied to a tree by a lead in an area of dense bush just off one of the walking tracks favoured by Kirsty. Later that morning, they came across two items of clothing – underwear and boxer shorts – on top of blackberry bushes, which was identified as belonging to the missing teen. Detective Senior Sergeant Lance Corcoran, who led the original Ashburton CIB investigation, felt from day one that the crime scene was staged by the killer to throw police off his trail. His view would be endorsed a decade later by top
Ashburton and the wider Canterbury district, rumours began swirling and fingers began to point. Hundreds of local men were spoken to by police. On January 17, 1999 – 18 days after Kirsty disappeared, and with news coverage diminishing with every passing day – her body was found. Two men searching for an illegal cannabis plot in the Camp Gully area of Rakaia Gorge – some 55km by road inland from Ashburton – stumbled across a badly decomposing body partially covered with sticks and scrub at the bottom of a steep embankment. I’ve been through very black years of grieving and don’t wish to return to that. If Kirsty’s name is mentioned I smile. She is the Kirsty I remember prickly with blackberry and fallen trees. When Kirsty’s father arrived home at around 6pm, things were not looking good. He immediately thought they should phone the police and lodge a missing person report. The Bentleys, along with friends and police, started searching the neighbourhood, building yards, the northern riverbank and its paths. As darkness fell, so did the mood. Kirsty had left home only wearing light clothes – a black tank top with a white butterfly-patterned blue sarong and black Colorado shoes with white soles.
international criminal profiler, retired British police inspector Chuck Burton, who reviewed the files in a bid to shed new light on the cold case. “It’s an offender protecting his own identity by changing and altering the crime scene,” Burton said It just didn’t add up. There were no signs of the underwear having been torn or forcibly removed and the Bentleys didn’t think the lead was the same one Kirsty left home with. Nobody heard barking the night before either. There were no other clues down by the river. Over the next fortnight as the hunt for Kirsty widened across

A post-mortem examination conducted two days later by forensic pathologist Dr Martin Sage concluded that given there was undigested food in her stomach – and it was known she’d eaten French fries with Lee-Anne at around midday on the day she disappeared — it was “most likely” she died that same day. In the months after her death, police asked the public for information about a green Commer van which was reportedly seen in the area at the time of Kirsty’s disappearance and over the following days in the Mid Canterbury town as well as Camp Gully area. It’s never been traced.
Corcoran is now in his 70s. He retired from the police at 55 – the age of compulsory retirement in those days – just months into the inquiry. Although he doesn’t let the case haunt him, he admits thinking about it “from time to time”. The fact that a local schoolgirl was murdered in his community, made it more personal to him than some other cases. Kirsty’s big brother John now lives in Australia and just like any life experience, it is a part of him but he doesn’t let it define him either. “It’s not in the forefront of my mind, just a little thing in the corner that reminds me of how the world can be,” he says. Lee-Anne Jellyman is now Lee-Anne Murray, aged 36 and a contracts administrator in Christchurch. She has her suspicions on what happened that day 20 years ago, “as do most people, I think”, which she isn’t keen to share. She doubts she’ll ever see justice for her “sweet, caring, loyal, wise beyond her years” best friend. “There is always the idea I would like to ask them why, but maybe I don’t want to know the answer to that question – there is no reason why a 15-year-old should have been taken that way. However, I actually don’t have a lot of confidence that I will ever see that justice.” Peachey, who now lives in Invercargill with second husband Noel Peachey, doesn’t have any theories on what happened to her daughter. And having no answers or any clues has been one of the toughest things to handle. “But I think of the happy memories, not the day she died. I’ve been through very black years of grieving and don’t wish to return to that. If Kirsty’s name is mentioned I smile. She is the Kirsty I remember.”

Scientologist stabbed The teenage son of a Scientologist has been arrested over an attack at the Sydney base of the controversial church where a “beloved” member died after being stabbed in the throat. The 24-year-old victim was killed by a “traumatic” stab wounds after an incident at the $57 million Church of Scientology headquarters in Chatswood on Thursday afternoon. The incident is alleged to have occurred on the driveway to the church after the 16-yearold was asked to leave. Police said the teen was escorted from the premises – and as he was taken down the road a 25cm “very sharp kitchen knife” was allegedly produced. Police said the 24-year-old, who is believed to be from Taiwan, died in hospital. He was bleeding heavily from the neck when paramedics arrived. The second man, aged 30, was treated for minor cuts and is in a stable condition. Detective Chief Inspector Simon Jones said when officers arrived they asked the 16-yearold to drop the knife and drew their tasers to get him to drop the knife. “At this stage it’s very early. “It would appear the altercation, or the reason the young person has been removed from the premises, was only and solely in relation to a domestic incident that occurred yesterday.” The victim couldn’t be saved, he said. “At this stage unfortunately the 24-year-old male has passed away and inquiries are being made to contact family. Both men were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital. The teen was taken to Chatswood Police Station where he is assisting police with inquiries. NSW Ambulance acting deputy commissioner Tony Gately described the 24-yearold victim’s injury as traumatic and said paramedics had done everything they could to help him. Inspector Jones said both the men were employees of the church and they were trying to establish why the teen was
Johnny Depp ‘a monster’ Legal documents obtained by The Hollywood Reporter reveal new details into Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s volatile relationship. “Johnny and I refer to his other personality, the part of him that is present when he beats me up – we call that the monster and have called [that] the monster for many years,” Heard said during a deposition taken in 2016. “I was petrified of the monster.” In the deposition, Heard claims Depp threw a phone at her face “as hard as he could” and grabbed her by the hair. She described the room as being covered in broken glass.

A man at the centre’s reception told news.com.au he had no idea about the circumstances surrounding the incident. “We’re not going to report
anything right now,” he said. Other staff in the church also said they were unaware of what unfolded in the driveway. The Church said in a statement the man killed was a beloved member of the congregation. “This very unfortunate matter is in the hands of the police. “We cannot make any further comment beyond the fact that the victim was a beloved member of our Church,” it said in a statement. “The Church is providing the police with any assistance needed in their investigation.” A young Scientologist, who asked not to be identified, had not been aware of the stabbings until media crews arrived. “I came down when the first camera crew showed up but I was told it wasn’t a huge deal,” he said. “It’s a huge building, a lot of people come from around Asia to study here. It offers a lot of services other (Scientology properties) don’t.” The headquarters for the church was officially opened in the leafy suburb of Chat-
swood in December 2016. The day included a performance of Waltzing Matilda by Aussie singer and Scientology member Kate Ceberano. The imposing building was described at the glitzy opening as “a cosmic alignment of universal factors” by the church’s global leader David Miscavige. More than 100 Scientology members are reportedly bussed into the fancy building daily to study Dianetics (the church’s key teachings on the science of the mind), take courses in purification to rid them of “toxic residues” and attend “auditing” sessions costing thousands of dollars to help them overcome their past and ascend to a higher level of existence. It is also known as Advanced Organisation Saint Hill Australia New Zealand Oceania, providing advanced religious services to Scientologists from across Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region. The centre is said to be its biggest spiritual centre outside the United States. - AAP

Another celeb has touched down in Queenstown. Multi Grammy-winning British singer Sam Smith has been spotted enjoying the sun in Arrowtown. His friend, Kiwi model Emma Champtaloup, posted a photo of Smith in Arrowtown on her Instagram account yesterday. Smith is seen pushing her baby in a stroller. The singer flew into Auckland earlier this week. He was last in New Zealand just two months ago, when he performed two shows in Auckland in November. Olivia Newton-John has dismissed speculation over her health and told fans “rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated”. The Australian actress, best-known for starring alongside John Travolta in 1978 film Grease, revealed in September she had been diagnosed with cancer for the third time in three decades. Last month reports emerged in the US speculating about Newton-John’s health, but the 70-year-old star has now moved to assure fans she is “doing great”. On Twitter she said: “Happy New Year everyone, this is Olivia Newton-John and I just want to say that the rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated, to quote a very famous quote.”

■ Place 3C berries into a bowl with the arrowroot and sugar stirring to combine well. ■ Place the mixture into the centre of the pastry then spread the filling over the dough leaving a 5cm boarder. ■ Brush the edges with the egg yolk then using your hands fold the pastry over your filling. ■ Brush the pastry again and place into the oven for 35-40 minutes. ■ Allow to cool before serving. ■ Garnish with fresh berries, a dusting of icing sugar and mint leaves. Dollar steadies after wild swings
The US non-farm payroll data for December, due out on Friday in the US, is expected to show 179,000 jobs were added in the month, up from 155,000 in November, a number that fell well short of expectations of 198,000. The October jobs count was also revised lower from an initially reported 250,000 to 237,000, adding to growing indicators that

The FMA said its own limited mandate in dealing with banking conduct and the central bank’s resourcing constraints probably contributed to the industry responding to conduct risks more slowly and shallowly than would be the regulator’s preference. McAnulty’s bill, which has yet to be drawn in the random ballot process for Members’ Bills, could pre-empt the timetable set out for dealing with the issues when the RBNZ/FMA report was released in November. At that time, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Commerce Minister Kris Faafoi said legislation to improve oversight was likely to come after the banks had reported back in March on individual programmes worked up for them by the regulators. It would also let ministers consider any new issues raised in the final report of the Australian Royal Commission, due in February.
In a cabinet paper published on the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employee website, Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Faafoi proposed that the government revisit the potential regulatory gap, which would require considerable policy work. MBIE would lead the policy work and report to Faafoi. “Without pre-empting the policy process, it is possible that a solution could require new legislative requirements,” the cabinet paper said. “If this is the case, consideration will need to be given to what these requirements could be, how they fit with existing legislation, such as the Financial Markets Conduct Act, and appropriate enforcement mechanisms.” McAnulty’s bill, as written, would require lenders to provide six-monthly reports to the RBNZ on the number of complaints they received against the code, how those issues were resolved, and any other information required by the central bank. It wouldn’t impose financial sanctions, rather it adopts “the approach that sunlight is the best disinfectant.” The RBNZ would then have to publish reports on the total number of complaints received, how they were dealt with for the system as a whole, and also for each individual lender. Private banks currently have a voluntary code of practice that was recently updated by its lobby group, the New Zealand Bankers’ Association. Its complaints process uses the Banking Ombudsman to help deal with complaints a bank can’t resolve on its own. The ombudsman fielded 2433 complaints in the June 2018 year, down from 2741 a year earlier. – NZME

Government backbencher Kieran McAnulty has jumped the queue in trying to impose a code of conduct on banks with a private members’ bill lodged just before Parliament’s seven-week summer break. The Labour MP and junior whip lodged the bill on December 18. It would require the Reserve Bank, in consultation with the licensed banks, to issue a code of conduct for lenders. The code would set out good practice for how lenders interact with their clients and clearly outline banks’ responsibilities to customers when closing down branches or significantly scaling back service in a particular area. McAnulty says there’s a regulatory gap relating to the delivery of banking products and how banks interact with customers but which doesn’t involve financial advice. “This bill would address that gap by requiring the RBNZ and the registered banks to produce a code of conduct,” the bill’s general policy statement said. “The code would outline the principles of good banking practice and the banks’ responsibilities to its customers in the event of a branch closure or significant reduction in available services.” Banking conduct has already come under the spotlight over the past year. The Reserve Bank and Financial Markets Authority investigated conduct among local lenders after an Australian Royal Commission into financial services uncovered widespread misdeeds across the Tasman. The RBNZ and FMA didn’t find the same sort of misconduct as the Australian inquiry, but did discover significant weaknesses in lenders’ internal processes for monitoring conduct. The New Zealand dollar is little changed as investors weigh recent extreme volatility and look for some direction from United States equities markets and US employment data due out overnight. The kiwi was trading at 67.02 US cents at 5pm in Wellington from 66.98 at 8.30 yesterday after earlier this week trading a very wide 65.88 US cent to 67.50 range. The trade weighted index eased to 73.16 points from 73.18. “It’s been a funny old day - the market’s left scratching its head a little bit after the extreme volatility we saw yesterday,” says Mitchell McIntyre at HiFX. The market found a little support and has been drifting higher after another plunge on Wall Street prompted sales of long US dollar positions to cover losses on equities. The broad measure of the US share market, the S&P 500 Index, shed 2.5 per cent on Thursday, with the Dow Jones Index down 2.8 per cent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq falling more than 3 per cent.

Health insurance needs overhaul T
here are a few things in life you can be sure of – that you’ll pay tax, that the cost of living will increase and that your health insurance premium will continue to rise. Apart from emergencies, health care in New Zealand is pretty black and white – if you have insurance you get what you need, when you need it, but if you don’t you wait till the bed, the money and the surgeon are available. The expectation is that we’ll all bite the bullet, take out health
insurance and while that’s good in theory for many Kiwis, health insurance is a budget item that’s never made the cut. For a growing number who have insurance it’s the budget item
they’ve funded for years, but as they’ve aged, it’s had to go. Rising premiums have seen to that. The private health insurance model is sound in concept, but only so far. For some there could be a lifetime of premiums paid for little return, for others the returns will far outweigh the outlay. The current system fails because premiums hit their peak at a time of life when Kiwis can no longer afford to pay, at retirement age. It becomes a tough choice –
bite the bullet and continue to pay against the day your hips, knees or some other body part give out, or throw years of premiums out the window, cancel your insurance and hope like hell your body hangs together. There has to be a way for insurance companies to make money without putting pensioners in the poor house. Why not have a system where a person who has paid health insurance premiums for years is able to stop payments at 65 but continue

City back in contention BY ROB HARRIS Liverpool can’t now win the Premier League unbeaten. Manchester City has renewed hope it won’t be surrendering the trophy at all. A title defence faltering a week ago is back on track for Pep Guardiola after City beat Liverpool 2-1 yesterday, inflicting the leader’s first league loss of the season in their 21st game. Completing the packed festive programme with an engrossing encounter, Liverpool’s threatened a comeback when Roberto Firmino cancelled out Sergio Aguero’s first-half opener but Leroy Sane struck the winner in the 72nd minute. A year after Liverpool ended City’s hopes of emulating Arse-
nal’s 2003-04 Invincibles, the tables were turned on a freezing night that saw the title race open up again. “Pretty intense,” Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. “It had wild moments.” Back-to-back losses for City less than two weeks ago had put Liverpool on a seemingly smoother path to a first English title in 29 years. Rather than going 10 points clear, Liverpool’s lead has been trimmed to four points by City, which reclaimed second place from Tottenham. “It’s still in Liverpool’s hands, but our performance was beyond anything else I’ve ever witnessed,” City captain Vincent Kompany said.

Lauren Ellis dreams of standing on the podium at next year’s Olympics, a medal around her neck and her son watching from the crowd. He might be too young to remember his mum’s moment in the velodrome spotlight, but if it happens, it’s a moment she’ll remember for the rest of her life. When it comes to motivation, it doesn’t get much better than that. But for Ellis, that dream is just part of what is driving her to get back to her best on the bike after a break to start a family. A silver medallist on the track at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, Ellis had already competed at two Olympics – Rio 2016 and London 2012 – but she had big hopes for Tokyo 2020. She has unfinished business when it comes to the Olympics and is determined to give it one more crack. For years, Ellis had been one of New Zealand’s top track cyclists. When the New Zealand contingent takes to the track at the Avantidrome in Cambridge later this month for a three-day World Cup meet, Ellis will again be there. But instead of riding as an elite rider as she had for many years before, this time she’d take to the track as part of a development team. It was a strange feeling for the 29-year-old. After breaking into the big-time of New Zealand cycling’s ranks, Ellis had never really
had to worry about selection. But now, it was a different story. She has been out of the picture for the best part of two years after taking a break to welcome baby Joe into the world, but now Joe is 13 months old and it is coming towards crunch time for his mum. Ellis is as determined as ever to make it back to her third Olympics, but time is quickly ticking down towards Tokyo 2020. Ellis knows she is capable of getting back to that world-beating level, it is just a matter of time and she just hopes she has enough of that commodity. Joe was born at the end of November, 2017, and although in no real rush to get back on the bike, Ellis had Tokyo on her mind and wanted to keep up some level of fitness, so she only took a few weeks off before returning to gym work and the odd ride. “I didn’t have any plans for coming back on to the bike until the Cambridge World Cup anyway. “I knew I had time, so I didn’t push myself,” Ellis said. She is getting faster and stronger every day, but admitted she probably isn’t quite where she hoped to be, having made the trade team instead of the elite team for Cambridge. “I was aiming to be in the elite team but you have to reassess sometimes, and just to be in the
development team and be given a chance again is great,” Ellis said. She has made a huge amount of progress over the past year, but knows she still has work to do. “Every couple of weeks I’ll get a PB for the year. When I was fit I went for ages without seeing that progress.” She found out she was pregnant just before the World Championships in 2017, and still planned on going to the worlds, but a chest infection she just couldn’t shake ended that plan. Due just a few months out from the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in early 2018, Ellis also made the decision to miss that. It would have been a huge call to try and get back to peak fitness so soon after having a baby, and Ellis has no doubt it had been the right decision. The first couple of months after Joe was born were incredibly hard. Nothing can prepare you for what awaits when you welcome your first baby into the world, particularly when that baby is colicky. Being a top athlete is hard, dedicating your life to training and competing on some of the world’s biggest sporting stages, but that was nothing compared to having a colicky baby, Ellis said. “As an athlete you’re so used to having control over everything you do, then you get a little baby who’s like ‘I’m not going to do
what you want and I’m just going to cry all the time’,” Ellis said. But now, Joe is a happy, healthy one-year-old and Ellis is back on the bike working hard to get back to where she was before he arrived. Ellis said she felt like she has unfinished business at the Olympics, so there was no shortage of drive. “After Rio, I think if I had medalled and done really well I probably would have thought about retiring, but coming away with two fourths and being so close, I want to go back and give it another go,” Ellis said. Being a top athlete now, compared to before she became a mum, is a lot different. Before, if training plans changed at the last minute it was fine – cycling was her job and top priority. But now, Joe was her top priority and life is a balancing act, the key to which was being super organised. Ellis said she is lucky that her partner Tim is able to work parttime and had also taken parental leave when Joe was born. That made the juggling act a lot easier to manage. Kong the week after the Cambridge event, and that will be the last shot at selection for the World Championships. Hong Kong is set to be huge, both on and off the bike. Ellis was yet to spend even one night away from Joe and going to Hong Kong will mean spending a whole week without him, while at the same time dealing with huge pressure to perform on the bike. If she wanted to be a part of that New Zealand contingent in Poland for the World Championships in February, she will have to prove her worth. After years of not having to stress over selection, it was an odd feeling, but Ellis is doing everything she can to ensure she is on the selectors’ minds. While back home in Hinds over Christmas and New Year, she made the most of any opportunity to get back out on the bike. She was back out training on those familiar roads where it all started for her back in her Tinwald Cycling Club days, and competed in the Jolly Potter race in Temuka between Christmas and New Year. The more time spent on the bike, the better she is getting, and while she could understandably be feeling nervous or daunted by the tasks that lay ahead, Ellis said the main thing she was feeling right now was excitement.

Bouchard gets the boot from ASB Classic By Michael Burgess Defending champion Julia Goerges has survived a major scare at the ASB Classic, being pushed to the limit by Eugenie Bouchard yesterday. Goerges saved a match point late in the third set, before eventually prevailing 3-6 6-3 7-6 (8-6) in almost two and a half hours, to advance to the semi-finals. In a contest of fine margins and played in horribly windy conditions, the difference was Goerges’ ability to dictate the rallies, especially when she advanced to the net. That assertive approach certainly sealed the tiebreak, where the world No 14 wasted two match points before converting her third. The result was tough on the Canadian, who lifted her levels well beyond what we had seen earlier in the week. It was the match of the tournament so far, with ample drama, stunning shot making and so many twists and turns. Conditions were extremely difficult. A swirling wind was a menace on centre court, especially on serve, and it never really abated. Given the climate – which also sent hats flying and meant all courtside umbrellas were taken down – the players coped extremely well, achieving, for the most part, a high quality of tennis. Bouchard grabbed an early break,

narrowly avoiding a collision with the umpires chair as she sprinted to retrieve a Goerges drop shot. Goerges struggled from the start, with some uncharacteristic unforced errors, while Bouchard looked a completely different player from the one who struggled to get past lowly ranked Dutch qualifier Bibiane Schoofs in the second round. Gone was the erratic stroke play that made that performance such a topsy turvy one, and more importantly Bouchard seemed to have the right focus, after her near meltdown on court in Wednesday’s second round. The final set was a nail biter. Bouchard edged ahead – with one kneeling backhand shot from the Canadian bringing the crowd to their feet – before a Goerges comeback. Two errors in the ninth game gave the German a break point, but Bouchard showed admirable composure to save the situation. Both players had further chances, with Goerges saving a match point at 5-6 with a courageous second serve. Goerges was always going to be favoured once the match went to a tie break, given her superior serve and skills at the net and so it proved. Meanwhile Viktoria Kuzmova has progressed to the last four of the ASB Classic, after a narrow three set win over American teenager Amanda Anisimova. - NZME
Bevin the TT champ Patrick Bevin goes into the 2019 cycling season with an excellent chance at winning a World Tour time trial stage. If he manages to pull of such a feat, it will be done with the silver fern across his chest, after winning the national time trial championship yesterday. Bevin claimed victory by one minute and 51 seconds on the 40.4 km course in Napier, crossing the line in an superb time of 50 minutes and 45 seconds to claim his second time trial title. Williams defends title One down, one to go for Georgia Williams. The 25-year-old has defended her national time trial title yesterday, riding to victory by 11.8 seconds on the Napier course. Williams won the time trial and road race double last year, and could become just the second woman to ever do the double in consecutive years, after Melissa Holt accomplished the feat in 2008-2009. You wouldn’t bet against it after her dominance in the road race last year, which she won by a remarkable four minutes and 41 seconds after a long-range attack. - NZME

Eight years after Alastair Cook surgically dismantled Australia, Cheteshwar Pujara has slowly and surely done the same to embarrass local batsmen and bowlers. Pujara extended his marathon knock into a fifth session and 548th minute before finally falling on 193, chipping a catch back to Nathan Lyon at the SCG yesterday. Pujara also offered a chance on 192, understandably tiring on the cusp of becoming India’s first double-centurion in Australia since Sachin Tendulkar’s SCG epic in 2004. Rae backing the Coasters Trainer Kenny Rae is a longtime supporter of the West Coast racing circuit and he believes that John Messara’s recommendation of racecourse consolidation in the area is misguided. Last year Rae was one of many participants affected by the abandonment of two of the four New Year’s circuit meetings, due to track conditions. “I wasn’t going to go this year,” he said. “It cost too much last year with the meetings getting called off but then you listen to the Messara Report trying to close these clubs down and if we don’t support them they will. “They’re talking about shutting down Reefton, Greymouth and Hokitika and keeping Kumara, but Kumara is a swamp and there’s no community there, no motels or anything so people have to travel there. “It’s a great circuit and it’s mostly voluntary, we were there nine years ago after the Pike River mining disaster and everybody just got behind it and kicked on. “Without those races, everybody misses out.” Despite being based at the top of the North Island, in Ruakaka, Rae along with his daughter and training partner Krystal Williams-Tuhoro regularly campaign horses throughout the South Island. “Krystal does the horses at home and I’m the travelling foreman but as I’m getting older the travel is starting to get to me,” Rae said. “We used to do this trip as a family working holiday but now my wife Lisa’s got a job and she couldn’t get time off and the other girls are going to a dancing competition on the Gold Coast,

No stopping green machine
Celtic A proved too hot to handle on the netball court in 2018, going through the season unbeaten to be crowned Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier one champs. But, what will 2019 bring? PHOTO ERIN TASKER 300818-ET-0106
The 2018 Mid Canterbury Netball season belonged well and truly to Celtic A. Unbeaten all season and defending the title they won the year before, there was simply no stopping them. Erin Tasker takes a look back at the season that was. For the past two seasons, the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one competition has been well and truly dominated by one slick team. Celtic A have been the team to beat and in 2018 no other team was able to do it. Now the question on everyone’s lips with another season looming large, is can someone give them a run for their money in 2019? Each season, teams can change – players come and players go, players take time away to have babies, while others return from having babies. But Celtic A had been a pretty consistent force over the past couple of years. In 2018, there was no stopping them, with the green machine dominating proceedings from the season’s opening whistle. When the final whistle of the season sounded, Celtic A had wrapped up their second Mid Canterbury Netball premier one title in a row, beating Methven A in the final 30-24. So what made Celtic A just that little bit better than any other team this year? Coached by Angela Leadley – once a pretty handy player herself – Celtic moved the ball through
the court with relative ease and speed week in, week out and opposition teams struggled to combat it. But where they were a step above all others, was in the defensive end, where Anna Holland and Gina Woodhouse combined to form a formidable defensive duo that gave team after team a massive headache. They made it incredibly tough for teams to get the ball into the shooting circle and picked up a steady stream of rebounds, and tips and intercepts through the midcourt, pouncing quickly on any loose ball which was then turned into points at the other end by their reliable shooters. A few teams came close, but never really threatened to hand Celtic A their first defeat of the season, until the final where a determined Methven A side took to the court with nothing to lose. They knew they were up against it and were well and truly underdogs, so they went into the match with the goal of leaving nothing on court. And they didn’t. Celtic A started strong, as everyone expected them to, and by half-time the score had blown out to 18-10.
Methven A had a huge mountain to climb to get back into the match, but they were determined to give it a crack. They’d pulled back one goal by three-quarter time and started the final quarter well to narrow the margin to five. With five minutes to go, and with Methven’s own dynamic defender Sally Carr in top form, Methven were back within four and a nail-biting final few minutes of the season ensued. A couple of late intercepts by Carr gave her side a sniff, but they were matched by a couple of late errors which ensured that Celtic A held on for the win. Also coming out on top on the 2018 Mid Canterbury Netball finals night was United A, who took out the premier two crown, in what was possibly the biggest shock of the season. It wasn’t a shock that they won the final – they’d dominated premier two in the final few weeks of the season – but what was the shock, was the fact that they were in premier two at all. While Celtic A were shining bright at the top in premier one all season, the rest of the teams were actually extremely well-matched. At the start of the season the six
teams lining up for a shot at the premier one competition were Celtic A, Methven A, Ashburton College A, Hampstead A, United A and Southern A. Automatic promotion/relegation awaited at the end of the first round, and Southern A found themselves down the bottom so they went down to premier two, while the top team in premier two made the step up to premier one. That side was Mt Somers, a new team formed at the start of the 2018 season. It may have been a new team, but it was full of familiar faces, including a number of players who had played premier netball for other clubs in recent seasons before giving the sport a break. Keen to come back and play top level netball, but without the added commitment of trialling and practising, they came together to form a new team under the Mt Somers banner. Their first game in premier one resulted in an edge-of-your-seat 33-32 thriller victory over Ashburton College A, and while wins were hard to come by from there for the Mt Somers side, they did enough to make the semi-finals of the third and final round – where they went down to Celtic
A – and kept their place in the top flight. Promotion/relegation also awaited at the completion of round two, and just who was in danger of dropping out of premier one came down to the final round. That team turned out to be United A and they took on the top side from premier two – Celtic B – in a promotion/relegation match, and lost. While the Celtic club was over the moon to have two sides in the top tier for the first time, the proud United A side was well and truly gutted. The side was coached by former United A player Claire Tappin and it was the first time she could recall in the almost 20 years she’d been involved with the club, that United A had not been in the top grade. But, what was done was done, and they turned their attention to premier two and won it with ease. Now, their goal is to get back into premier one as quickly as they can, and with the experience of the 2018 season so fresh in their minds there will be no shortage of determination and drive when they take to the court for the opening round of the 2019 season.
