Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel is backing an investigation into reviving passenger rail services south of Christchurch.

The Canterbury Mayoral Forum has instigated a project to look at the potential for a rail service. The region’s mayors, including Favel, will discuss it later this year.

Favel said she supported the opportunity to consider passenger services south of Christchurch. Additional information would be needed though before she and the Ashburton District Council made an official decision to support such a service, or not.

The mayoral forum received $50,000 from the previous Government’s Regional Growth Programme to develop a preliminary business case and investigate the potential for a passenger rail service between Christchurch and Invercargill.

liminary business case, the first stage of which was finished in December last year. The second is due to be completed in the next few months.

Mayoral Fund principal advisor David Bromell said commercial sensitivities meant some of the information could not be shared, but non-sensitive sections would be available to the wider public after the mayoral forum had had the opportunity to engage in detail with KiwiRail.

He said the business case would take into account whether there was an evidence-based market demand from a range of potential user groups and if there was, what their requirements might be.

Requirements included stations that might be served, likely operator and timetable, price and ride quality, along with the associated need for infrastructure and rolling stock.

Korean cuisine among fare at Multi Cultural Bite

Korean food is delicious, say Young Lee and Tom Suh, and they can not wait to share it with fellow Ashburton residents.

The mother and son pair will be joining with their friend Kara Kang in preparing tasty cuisine from their home country at Multicultural Bite in Ashburton tomorrow.

On offer will be Galbi beef short rib roast, Dak Gang Jeong sweet and sour chicken, Kimbap sushi rolls, Tteokkochi spicy rice cake skewers, Japchae kumara stir fried noodles and Chapssaltteok sticky rice cake.

“I want the Ashburton people to know about Korean food, Korean food is very yum,” Lee said.

She and Suh said they are often in the kitchen, preparing food from their home country. They had immigrated to Ashburton about seven years ago. Some Kiwi cuisine had won over their hearts since, such as beef steak, however, more often than not they found themselves cooking Korean food.

It was a style of cooking that was slow, with many dishes requiring plenty of preparation.

Kang is also from Korea, and she moved to Ashburton with her family about six months ago.

Her sons Jay and Jade will be providing entertainment at Multi Cultural Bite, playing Korean music on saxophone, clarinet, guitar and violin.

A busy weekend for firefighters

Firefighters were called out yesterday afternoon after a small shed caught fire on a property on Le Bretons Road.

Firefighters have been kept busy as conditions dry out across the district.

On Saturday there were five call-outs across the district, with the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Unit responding to four of them.

Things started at about 9.15am after reports of a fire in a drum, deputy chief fire officer Graeme Baker said.

Just after lunchtime the siren sounded again, this time to a report of a pump shed that had caught fire in the Maronan area.

“It was just a wee electrical pump shed that had burnt out but near to it was a big macrocarpa hedge and on the other side of that there was a large stack of hay bales,” Baker said.

“It was just a matter of dampening down the hedges after that to make sure it didn’t spread.”

Three units from Ashburton, two from Hinds and one from the Ashburton rural unit attended the fire.

Firefighters were called out once again at about 2.35pm to Sheates Road in the Westerfield area after what was a contained fire got out of control and spread to nearby hay bales and bushes, with the call-out lasting just over two hours.

Three units again from Ashburton responded, along with two from Mayfield, and one each from Hinds and Ashburton rural responded.

The Lauriston rural fire unit also attended two call-outs over the weekend, a medical call on Saturday and a vegetation fire.

Yesterday afternoon firefighters responded to a fire that severely damaged a small shed on a property on Le Bretons Road.

The shed contained hay and an old-style vehicle which was damaged by the fire.

The Ashburton District Court is scheduled for improvements next month with an upgrade to its sound system.

The upgrade will mean the courtroom will have the capability to use portable video conferencing equipment in the future.

Audio-visual link (AVL) is used in other courtrooms around New Zealand and means criminal procedural matters can be heard remotely when the defendant is in custody.

around 200,000 criminal, family, youth and civil matters are dealt with nationally every year.

The Ashburton court deals with about 0.4 per cent of that volume, about 800 cases.

When the New Zealand Law Society asked local lawyers about the court last year, the Ashburton Legal Practitioners’ Society said it was “absolutely crucial” the Ashburton courthouse was retained and services to be increased.

They said it would be disastrous if the court were to close as users would be forced to travel to either Timaru or Christchurch, at least an hour away.

Lawyers also pointed to a lack of private space for duty solicitors to meet clients on a busy criminal list day.

From P1 Bromell said the indicative business case would also consider the broader set of local, regional and national benefits a service could deliver in addition to commercial considerations – for example, potential impact on road safety, maintenance of highways and local roads, environmental considerations and support for regional and national tourism strategies.

The outcome of the business case would be a recommendation for consideration by the mayoral forum on whether to proceed with an approach to KiwiRail and other key stakeholders, encouraging them to proceed to a full commercial business case.

The Southerner ran between Christchurch and Invercargill for 42 years but was stopped in 2002.

Timaru District Mayor Damon Odey is leading the charge for it to make a comeback.

Ashburton woman Helen Argyle also wrote to Transport Minister Phil Twyford recently regarding the possibility of reinstating passenger rail services between the two cities.

In a reply to her, he said any decisions about passenger rail services would need to be supported by business cases that provided evidence that the service would be commercial viable.

“As a State-Owned Enterprise, it is ultimately KiwiRail’s responsibility to make decisions on operational matters. I am advised by officials that KiwiRail is always interested in working with regional councils to explore and deliver sustainable passenger rail operations to their communities, where demand exists.

Twyford said the Government intended to provide KiwiRail with more stable and sustainable funding so that services were improved.

Last year’s fundraiser a tough act to follow

The Ashburton Pakeke Lions are busy preparing for their largest fundraiser of the year, their annual Monster Charity Market & Garage Sale at the Ashburton Racecourse.

Last year the market saw about 3000 items donated from the community, including everything from antique wall telephones to fine china.

Alongside the $12,000 to $14,000 raised for the Pakeke Lions to distribute back to the community, the club will also be running three raffles, two of which will be contributing towards purchasing a defibrillator for Tuarangi Home.

Organiser Dave Bennett said the bar had been set high with the previous year’s event.

“You never know what is going to turn up,” he said.

“Last year was hugely successful so the bar has been set for us to make it just as good, if not better this year.”

Items will be separated into different stalls, including china, sporting goods, tools, household and garden items.

No heaters, computers or televisions will be accepted in the donations, but all other household items are welcomed.

Cake, produce and craft stalls will also be operating, as well as a sausage sizzle and entertainment for children.

Collections will be operating from February 27, while items may also be left at the Ashburton Racecourse from that date.

“We get everyone involved including the members’ partners and everyone seems to enjoy it,” Bennett said.

The Ashburton Pakeke Lions are hoping the crowds will once again flock to their annual Monster Charity Market & Garage Sale.

Leaving my residence for a brief walk in New York is not possible without dressing like an eskimo.

The essentials are gloves, beanie, thick jacket or coat, and a woolly scarf to cover my face, all on top of layers upon layers of clothes.

It is a bit like preparing for a cold day on Mt Hutt, but it’s even colder. Some days the wind chill reaches minus 20 to minus 30 degrees celsius. The coldest recorded temperature so far this winter is about minus 18 degrees, and it’s days like this that the city becomes a block of ice – roads are white from frost or snow, puddles turn into rock-hard slip zones, and Central Park lake is frozen to a shimmering stillness.

The wind is the worst part. It feels so piercing when it hits your skin, it’s painful.

The cold means your eyes water, your nose always sniffles, and your legs go numb. It does sometimes feel like your blood has frozen.

People still go about their daily lives, bustling along the salt-covered footpaths, just as busy as usual, only frozen and very cold as they do it.

I feel quite fortunate as I only face the cold when I walk 20 to 30 minutes a time – to and from school and the nearby subway station. Inside my boarding house and school, central heating ensures it is always

warm and toasty.

In coming to New York I thought I would be well conditioned to a harsh winter. Having grown up in Mid Canterbury I was sure I could tough it out. Let’s just say if I could trade a New York winter for a Mid Canterbury one, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I guess it’s all a part of the adventure, and I still think New York is the city of dreams, even if the cold takes a little bit of that patina off with its deathly chill.

Champions toppled New champions were found at the annual Methven Community Pool Corporate Challenge on Sunday.

The popular event which sees businesses and organisations from across the Methven community competing against each other drew big crowds of competitors and spectators alike, all there to see if there was a team worthy of knocking the defending

champion Methven Pubs side off their perch.

And they weren’t disappointed with a group of young stars rising to the challenge. Under the banner of Star Brights Homebased Care; Piper Hood, Olly Maw, Brea Roderick and Bree Middleton swam their way to victory to lift the trophy.

Middleton then went a step further and claimed the coveted

blue blazer by winning the hot lap – another competition at the carnival which is based purely on speed for a length of the pool.

As well as the corporate challenge and hot lap, a number of other activities were held during the day for the youngsters before things got serious later in the day.

Guardian photographer Robyn Hood headed along to the event to capture some of the action.

Lifeguard Yumi Blake was on hand to make sure everyone was safe.

Mary Poppins ‘racist’ A US academic has caused controversy online after labelling the Disney classic Mary Poppins racist. Professor Daniel Pollack-Pelzner wrote a piece to the New York Times claiming the nanny Mary Poppins, played by Julie Andrews, “shamefully flirts with blackface” in the scene where she dances with Dick Van Dyke’s Bert on the rooftop to the song Step in Time. “When the magical nanny accompanies her young charges, Michael and Jane Banks, up their chimney, her face gets covered in soot, but instead of wiping it off, she gamely powders her nose and cheeks even blacker,” the professor at Linfield College writes.

Whoever said Maroon 5 were shaping up to perform one of the worst Super Bowl Halftime shows yet might have been on to something. Fronted by a mostly shirtless and heavily tattooed Adam Levine, the band moved through the motions as they fronted the high-profile slot during the half-time break between the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots. Controversy had surrounded Maroon 5’s performance following calls by big name celebrities to boycott the performance over the NFL’s treatment of players who spoke out against police brutality.

Locals are taking to social media to beg for their lives as rescuers race against the clock to save thousands of people from rising floodwaters in north Queensland.

Rescue teams from police, SES and the Australian Army worked through the night to grab dozens of Townsville families perched on top of their kitchen benches, cars and even rooftops.

Other residents on higher ground are nervously waiting inside their homes to see just how far flood waters will rise after unprecedented releases from the city’s swollen dam.

Crocodiles have been spotted outside suburban homes.

Floodwaters are also full of snakes, with authorities telling people they must stay out of the water.

Two police officers who were evacuating people in the suburb of Hermit Park had to be rescued themselves when fast rising waters left them clinging to trees and washed away their patrol car.

Two other people were plucked to safety from the roof of their car at Hyde Park nearby.

Soldiers are using every boat they can get their hands on to evacuate Townsville residents

amid fears up to 2000 properties may have been inundated.

Residents in 21 suburbs were on high alert yesterday for flash flooding and emergency services.

Dozens of panicked locals have taken to social media to request rescues as floodwaters continue to rise.

Australian Defence Force soldiers sent a handful of boats into the Townsville suburb of Idalia to rescue residents trapped on rooftops and kitchen benches.

“Anyone out there with a boat please go to … Springbank Circuit, Idalia. My wife is going to drown with my twoyear-old child,” Stewart Close wrote in a flood watch group on Facebook.

“Need help still waiting for emergency services been six and a half hours. Another six we won’t be here. Water is raising (sic) fast,” his wife Bronywn had previously written.

All roads in Idalia, a suburb in the south of Townsville, were cut off last night after the flood gates of the Ross River dam were fully open causing the banks of the river to swell.

Another Idalia resident took to Facebook late Sunday night to ask for help saying their house was “filling up with water”.

“Can anyone please help,” Nicole Brewster wrote.

“We are at … Ransome St, Idalia and our house is filling up with water.

“We called SES an hour ago and still waiting. They have just opened the flood gates more and we should expect higher flooding. I’m really scared.”

Australian Army soldiers spent the night evacuating around 400 residents from Idalia telling locals they were working as fast as possible.

The suburb had waist-height water.

Dozens of other locals have posted via social media they’re perched on kitchen benches and their rooftops awaiting rescues.

Helicopters have been supporting the army in the rescue effort.

“Anyone who is not on a second storey has water moving through their house,” Major Beau Hodge told reporters.

Major Hodge said his own home was gone and he had to evacuate his own family from Idalia on Sunday night.

He couldn’t say how many people are still stuck in the area.

“I’m lucky my family are safe and well.

“We’ll be all right.”

More than 1000 calls for help were logged by the State Emergency Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services in the past 24 hours, most of them in Townsville.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk praised the work of emergency services but warned residents it wasn’t over yet.

“We’ve never seen anything like this before,” she said.

“In Queensland, of course, we’re used to seeing natural disasters, but Townsville has never seen the likes of this.

“Don’t go sightseeing, if you don’t need to be out on the roads, don’t be.

“We haven’t yet got to the peak … it will continue for the next 24 to 48 hours … this monsoonal pressure will keep shifting, so we don’t know where it’s going to dump the water.”

Palaszczuk said 900 people were sheltering in evacuation centres, and they were getting full but it was possible more centres would be opened up.

The trough that’s been dumping flooding rain on north Queensland’s east coast, and drought-hit parts of western Queensland, will drive the state’s emergency for days to come.

What does Waitangi Day mean to you?

A

s we prepare ourselves for Waitangi Day celebrations, there will be the usual mixed feelings about the day and what it stands for and what it means to many people in our country.

For a day that is so steeped in New Zealand’s history and a day which has ultimately defined the way we live our lives, it is treated with huge disregard by a large part of the population.

No longer do we seem to celebrate the important stuff that played such an integral role in forming the country we live in – we get caught up in the mindless

rubbish that tends to drift in with the wind.

The story of the signing of the treaty of Waitangi is engraved into the mind of every New Zealand school child from a very young age, but by the time adolescence rolls around it’s often no more than a distant memory

and just a reason for a day away from work, or school.

Last year I wrote about the famous column penned by the late Paul Holmes in 2012 when he described the day as being repugnant.

His view was a view that was shared by many and most took acceptance in what he was saying by his opening line; “It’s a bullshit day, Waitangi.”

Perhaps it was a bit harsh from Holmes, as brilliant as he was, he certainly didn’t hold back and tended to go full steam ahead on most things, especially if he didn’t agree with them.

Unlike him, perhaps we should all be taking stock tomorrow of what we’re thankful for here in our great country.

Treat it not for what you see on the news and read in the papers, but instead treat it as your day.

A day to be quintessentially Kiwi.

Chuck on the rugby shorts, jandals and a singlet and sit in the sun with your mates having a few cold ones while singing along to the guitar.

Take the kids down to the beach, river or lake for a day out on the water. Play backyard cricket.

In short, have some fun.

But also enjoy time with family and friends. Life is in full swing again after the casual month of the year that is January and it’s a long time until we get another day of rest like this – so make the most of it.

But also try and spend some time thinking about our great country and what makes it great.

But also, what you’d like to introduce to make it even better.

We have a canvas that could be a show-stopper and in many ways it is on the global scene, but there’s always room for improvement.

ew Zealanders love to talk (or moan) about the weather. Despite this, we have tended to roll our eyes as friends or relatives who’ve crossed the ditch remind us ‘how hot it is’ over there.

Lately though, the bragging has pretty much disappeared and in its place is exasperation.

The seemingly never-ending summer heatwave, with temperatures soaring into the 40s, are taking their toll across Australia.

Rural firefighters are at capacity, beaches are packed, air-conditioned malls have become a go-to venue and animals and people alike are suffering in the heat.

There are reports that large numbers of wild animals, including herds of brumbies and a third of the spectacled fruitbats population, have dropped dead from dehydration and heat stress.

The Aussie heatwave is now making its way across New Zealand, so it’s timely to have a ‘refresher’ on sensible things to do, and not do, in the heat. It’s also a crucial reminder on the importance of water storage, given the frequency of extreme weather events seems to be intensifying.

On the ‘don’t be bloody stupid’ list, are things like not leaving dogs (or people) in cars. Cranking down a window is seldom enough, and hot cars quickly become ovens on wheels.

Mid Canterbury is one of a number of districts in New Zealand now in a restricted fire season and the danger of unplanned fires is currently ‘high’.

Extreme care needs taken around fires and barbecues of any kind, so if in doubt, check out the Fire Emergency New Zealand website http://www. checkitsalright.nz/ Extended periods of heat are not pleasant for animals either, whether farmed or domestic.

Being able to spot issues such as heat stress in animals is a skill

most farmers are well versed in. Symptoms include panting, increased water consumption, loss of appetite, listlessness and increased salivation.

A key to avoiding heat stress before it happens is ensuring all animals have a plentiful supply of drinking water, and access to shade wherever possible.

It is highly likely we’ll continue to see more of these extended heat events into the future and preparation is key.

So, it’s a no-brainer that storing water during times when it’s plentiful is essential. It not only improves our resilience to climate change, it ensures communities, businesses, households and animals alike have certainty when it comes to access to water, when and where it’s needed, into the future.

While more big hydro schemes may be off the table, water stor-

age is going to be crucial into the future. It keeps our future production options open. New Zealand needs to start having some serious conversations about how we enable and facilitate smaller scale and community water storage projects.

It is time for local and central politicians to sit down and start planning for more frequent weather extremes.

That’s something I’m happy for us to learn from those across the ditch.

Another profitable year for farmers

Farmers are heading for a profitable three-peat as long as their winning streak can avoid offshore risks.

A Rabobank report says the New Zealand agricultural sector is poised for a third consecutive year of profitability in spite of “rising downside risks’’.

The Agribusiness Outlook report indicates favourable production conditions and strong commodity prices are likely to continue throughout the year for a further profitable year for farmers, in combination with an expected weakening of the dollar.

The mostly positive report cautions the risks – particularly those relating to New Zealand’s major off-shore markets – are mounting and have the potential to derail the industry from its unusually long winning streak.

Rabobank New Zealand country banking general manager Hayley Gourley said many factors playing out in the favour of farmers last year were set to extend over the year.

“The weather has been highly favourable for the agricultural sector in recent months and the outlook for the foreseeable future looks benign. Commodity prices for New Zealand’s main agricultural products are also strong at the moment, and, while prices for some commodities are set to soften modestly in 2019, others should strengthen,” she said.

Gourley said the dollar was expected to drift lower over the course of the year, bringing the prospect of the lowest average annual exchange rate against the greenback in a decade.

the moment with strong production and prices.

In-market prices were generally above long-run averages and the relatively low dollar was resulting in greater returns for farmers and growers, she said.

She said excellent growing conditions had bolstered milk production this season and meat processing had been delayed as farmers held on to livestock longer which would result in heavier stock for processing when they eventually came forward.

“In-market prices are average or above for virtually all sectors – with wool the only major exception.’’

The Rabobank report says a slow-down in the Chinese econ-

omy and trade disputes between key trading partners are the major threats to New Zealand agriculture in the year ahead.

RaboResearch general manager Tim Hunt said lower economic growth in China was a concern because it was New Zealand’s largest trading partner for agricultural products.

“The Chinese economy grew at its slowest rate since 1990 in the closing quarter of 2018 and while the official growth rate was still 6.6 per cent, many analysts, including our own, believe the deceleration is far greater and risks worsening through the year,” he said.

Kilsby said China continued to become a more important market for New Zealand’s primary pro-

duce and the flipside of this was New Zealand was increasingly exposed to the risks associated with a slowing of its economy.

Hunt said the UK and EU still had to sort out Brexit. With a nodeal departure a distinct possibility, there was a real risk of a “calamitous exit’’ with heavy impact for two of New Zealand’s key markets.

He said the potential for an escalation in the US-China trade dispute was a further threat, as were the flow-on impacts on consumption of a possible US recession and a crashing Australian house market.

On the domestic front, mycoplasma bovis remains a risk. The government will draft legislation on water quality, climate change,

carbon farming and biodiversity this year, DIRA legislation is being revised and Fonterra will finalise its asset sale plan. Each decision would shape the future of the industry and being prepared for a tougher operating environment was probably a good idea, said Hunt.

Rabobank’s milk price forecast for the 2018/19 season remains at 6.25 a kilogram of milksolids.

The bank mostly expects farmgate beef prices to hold and lamb and mutton prices to remain at elevated levels.

Horticulture exports are expected to grow and moderate growth is anticipated for wine exports, subject to Brexit and labour shortage restraints.

Water storage becoming priority Irrigators say the heatwave over much of New Zealand reinforces the need for more water storage.

IrrigationNZ chairwoman Nicky Hyslop said heatwaves were likely to be repeated in future years as hot, dry summers increased and urgent plans had to be made to improve water storage to cope with future demand.

“New Zealand is water-rich by world standards, but we often don’t have enough water at the time it is most needed unless we store more water,” she said.

New Zealand’s recent average annual rainfall is estimated at about 550 square kilometres by Niwa, and 2 per cent of this is abstracted for human use.

Hyslop said the landscape has dried out since a wet spring in many areas.

“Soil moisture levels are now significantly below average in most of the North Island, particularly the upper north, over Canterbury, Otago, Marlborough and Nelson and this is increasing demand for water for both domestic and agricultural use,” she said.

Drier conditions are forecast by Niwa scientists to continue in future summers in a report on climate change impacts on agricultural water and flooding.

The report highlights that soil conditions are projected to become drier over much of the country, including Auckland, during spring and summer during this century. Average river flows are also expected to decrease in the east and north of the North Island.

Hyslop said managing water in the future would need a rethink because of the changes and the population would continue to increase.

“Water availability is a critical issue for New Zealand and we need to be planning at a national level for how we will meet this increasing demand for water.”

Hyslop said irrigators would need to manage their water allocation carefully.

“Irrigators have a limit on the amount of water they can use in their resource consent. A number of irrigators will already be operating under river restrictions, while others will need to be planning for the likelihood that water restrictions may be introduced soon.”

Banks slammed; charges call The Australian banking Royal Commission has called for tougher regulation, more scrutiny of pay and has made 76 recommendations to overhaul the industry.

In a final report released yesterday, the Commission found 24 instances of corporate behaviour which it has referred to the regulators for possible prosecution.

Australia’s corporate regulators will also be subjected to a new oversight body.

Australia’s Federal Government has said it will implement the recommendations.

Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg slammed the banking culture which he said had “broken businesses” and the stress and personal pain that had “broken lives”.

“It’s a scathing assessment of conduct driven by greed and behaviour that was in breach of existing law and fell well below community expectations,” he said.

Frydenberg announced a $A30 million compensation scheme of last resort to pay victims of mis-

conduct by institutions which no longer exist.

It will compensate victims dating back to 2008, the remit of the royal commission.

Viagogo is set to be a no-show at its High Court hearing in Auckland today.

The Commerce Commission has filed for an interim injunction against the controversial, Swissbased online ticket seller, which has generated hundreds of complaints.

Barring a last-minute change, the hearing is set to be a one-sided affair.

Viagogo refused to be served in New Zealand, the Commerce Commission says. It asked to be served in Switzerland – a process the regulator said would take six months, leading it to opt for a without-notice hearing in NZ. he ticket seller has not made any written submissions, and will not have legal representation at the hearing – although the Herald understands it may have observers in the public gallery.

The Commerce Commission, which has collected upwards of 587 complaints about Viagogo, alleges the site has made false claims about the number of tickets left for various events; frequently allowed the same ticket to be resold multiple times; given the impression it is an official ticket for events when it is not, and made false representations about a money-back guarantee.

The regulator alleges that at least 79 Kiwis have been sent invalid tickets.

It also alleges that undisclosed fees increase the price of a ticket by a third, and says that Viagogo’s dispute-resolution process, which requires a customer to work through a Swiss court, is unreasonable.

Multiple customers have also told the Herald, and the commission, that they thought Viagogo was an official ticket seller be-

cause the high-rotate Google advertisers typically appears at the top of search results for any given event.

They only realised it was a second-hand or “scalping” site after later learning tickets were far cheaper through official channels.

A number of regulators around the world have taken legal action against Viagogo. In the case of the Commerce Commission’s opposite number in the UK, the Competition Markets Authority, it was successful – but it alleges Viagogo has simply ignored the verdict.

On November 27 last year, the CMA said the order required Viagogo to undergo an independently supervised review of unpaid claims under its guarantee from January 2016 to November 2018, as well as making various amendments to its sales practices.

Now, the UK watchdog says it has “serious concerns that Viagogo has not complied with important aspects of the court order we

secured against them”. It says it will return to court if Viagogo continues to, in its view, ignore the order.

The company has repeatedly declined to comment on individual customers’ complaints, or various allegations made in the Commerce Commission’s statement of claim.

Last week, it offered a general comment: “Sellers on Viagogo are only paid for their tickets after the buyer has successfully gained entry to the event. If there are any issues with the tickets – eg. they send invalid tickets – they will not be paid.

These security measures ensure that fraudulent sellers do not operate on our marketplace and that our buyers are protected.”

Google refused to comment on Viagogo. A spokeswoman said it won’t comment on individual advertisers, and that it will investigate a complaint about any advertiser.

Greetings from Te Ao Maori

BY MAX REEVES This week we’ll be celebrating Waitangi Day with a public holiday. It’s a holiday special to New Zealand and a chance to reflect on what it means to come from our beautiful country of Aotearoa.

Many people will have heard and know basic greetings in Maori. Being able to introduce yourself in te reo is a useful skill to share and learn that makes people from this country distinctive. How we greet others can also be a reminder of family connections and the importance of place and land in all our identities.

In Te Ao Maori (the Maori world) a pepeha is a type of greeting used to introduce yourself and your whanau (family).

This is a brief guide on how to write your own pepeha. Knowing the connections between people can be a good way to help set out a co-operative relationship.

A pepeha can also be a good thing to know if you travel overseas. Being able to speak a little bit of te reo will impress people who may not know much about New Zealand. Being able to do a pepeha and explain its meaning is even more impressive.

A pepeha starts with telling people something about the place that belongs to you, or that you belong to. This means telling listeners what your maunga (mountain) is.

We have used Ka Huru Manu (the Kai Tahu mapping project) to learn how to incorporate Te Reo names for local geography in our pepeha.

Maunga The mountains you might want to use if you are from Ashburton District are: Mahaanui (Mount Harper) Te Kiekie (Mount Somers) Opihako (Mount Winterslow) Te Maka Kaha (Mount Alford) Huirapa or Opuke (Mount Hutt) Some of these names have meaning behind them. Mahaanui is the name of waka of the fabled Maori navigator Maui. Te Kiekie was a voyager on the Arai-te-uru waka, a boat which capsized in Otago. Many passengers never made it back to the waka, and became the geographical features of Te Waiponamu (The South Island).

If you are not sure which mountain to use as yours, I suggest using either Huirapa, Opuke or Te Kiekie or Mahaanui as these are significant maunga in the area.

You could also use Puteawhatiia (Big Hill Range). Puteawhatiia was another passenger of the Arai-teuru waka.

So you could say: Ko Opuke toku maunga (I belong to Mt Hutt/Mt Hutt is my mountain) or Ko Puteawhatiia te maunga (I am affiliated with the Big Hill Range).

Awa or roto The next geographical feature you mention is your water. This could be an awa (river) or a roto (lake).

If you come from Ashburton you probably want to go with Hakatere for your river.

Hakatere was used by Maori to travel inland to the mahinga kai (food preparation) sites. These mahinga kai sites are still called The Maori Lakes in English.

If you are from Hinds, you may want to use Hekeao (Hinds River) as your awa. If you are from further south you could also use Rangitata, which bears the same name in English as it does in te reo Maori.

Finally, if you are from Rakaia or north of Ashburton, you could use Rakaia as your awa. The Rakaia was important for Maori in Te Waipounamu, because they would often travel through Noti Raureka (Browning Pass) when travelling across Ka Tiritiri-o-te-moana (The

Southern Alps).

Rakaia specifically refers to the river between its mouth, and the junction of the Waitawhiri (Wilberforce River) and Rakaia-wai-pakihi (Mathias River).

If you want to use a river in pepeha, you might say: Ko Hakatere toku awa (I belong to Hakatere/Hakatere is my river) or Ko Hekeao te awa (I am affiliated with Hakatere).

You could also use a roto (lake).

The reason a pepeha starts with geographical features is because of the importance maunga and water in defining identity in Te Ao Maori. Rivers were like highways for Maori people and they also provided food. If you spend time

around the Otuwharekai (Ashburton Lakes), you may want to recognise this in your pepeha.

Oturoto is Lake Heron. Te Puna-a-Taka is Lake Clearwater.

Otautari is Lake Camp. Finally, Kirihonuhonu is Lake Emma. All of these lakes were important mahinga kai sites for Maori in the area, making them suitable to have in your pepeha.

If you want to use a roto in your perpeha, you can use it instead of, or alongside, your awa.

You could say Ko Oturoto toku roto or Ko Te Puna-a-Taka te roto.

This gives you the first two or three lines of your pepeha. The next step would be to tell your listener who you are descended

from, but we can save that for another time.

If you are interested in learning more about Kai Tahu place names, make sure you look up Ka Huru Manu (kahuramanu.co.nz/atlas).

You can also learn more about the history of the region and the people of Kai Tahu. Many of the atlas entries have information on why the place was given a name, or what its importance is.

If you want to learn more about writing a pepeha there are numerous places online you can look at, but one of the best guides I’ve found is Otago University’s guide found on their website. It will also help you learn why pepeha are structured the way they are.

Porsche take Bathurst Young Australian driver Matt Campbell has given Porsche its maiden Bathurst 12 Hour race title with a nail-biting victory from Aston Martin gun Jake Dennis at Mount Panorama.

Campbell, 23, won the longest Bathurst 12 Hour in history after a massive 312 laps, almost double that of the home-grown 1000 race in October, to crown himself one of Porsche’s up and coming stars.

He is classified as a Porsche young professional which is the middle tier of the programme and will compete globally this year with the German marque at some of the world’s most prestigious races.

“It’s the best moment of my entire life,” Campbell said of the win.

“I knew it was going to be tough, but not that tough. It was an absolutely phenomenal race and I was completely spent at the end.”

An audacious pass at the famous left-hand right angled corner of Forrest Elbow secured the win when he passed Aston Martin gun Jake Dennis.

Campbell made the winning move on Dennis after 11 hours and 51 minutes of racing.

It gave he and co-drivers Dirk Werner and Dennis Olsen the win by 3.44 seconds over the Brit and his Aston Martin team-mates Matthieu Vaxiviere and Marvin Kirchhoefer.

In brief Fowler battles to victory Rickie Fowler has held it together in a rollercoaster final round at the Phoenix Open to claim his fifth PGA Tour title. He squandered a five-shot lead on the back nine when he dropped four shots in two holes at Scottsdale. Fowler chipped into the water on the par-4 11th. He took a penalty drop and walked away to survey his next shot and could only watch on as his ball rolled back into the hazard. After a discussion with rules official Slugger White, he took another penalty drop and did remarkably well to chip and hole the putt for a bizarre triple-bogey seven. Rookie shines in Saudi Australian youngster Min Woo Lee is off to a flying start in his professional golf career after a dazzling weekend performance gave him fourth place in the European Tour’s Saudi International. In just his second professional start, 20-year-old Lee came away with 152,479 euros in prize money after he produced a second consecutive seven-under par 63 to finish at 15 under against a strong field. He was four shots behind world No.3 Dustin Johnson, who carded a 67 to win by two strokes from China’s Li Haotong (69).

Nice payday for Fox Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox has finished tied for sixth in the latest European Tour event in Saudi Arabia. Fox shot a final round 68 to end the tournament at 11-under, eight shots back from winner Dustin Johnson.

Fox earns €80,753 ($NZ134,000) for his top-10 placing, his biggest payday of the season to date. The Saudi International is new to the European Tour and is being held amid scrutiny of Saudi Arabia’s human-rights record and condemnation following the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. - NZME

Storm eye Johns junior Melbourne Storm could turn to some rugby league royalty as they attempt to nail down a halfback this NRL season, with teenager Cooper Johns a surprise contender.

The Storm rotated through three halfbacks last year, using Brodie Croft, who played in the grand final loss, as well as Jahrome Hughes and Ryley Jacks, as they sought to fill the hole created by Cooper Cronk’s departure.

Coach Craig Bellamy would

like to settle on one player in the No.7 jersey this year to play alongside Cameron Munster in the halves.

“We thought in the circumstances we were in last year that we did what was best for the team with three guys filling that position but that’s not ideal,” Bellamy told AAP. Bellamy said he’d been impressed by Johns, who is the youngest son of Newcastle great Matthew Johns, and nephew to eighth Immortal Andrew Johns.

The 19-year-old played in the Storm’s under-20 side last year and also had seven matches for Storm feeder team Sunshine Coast Falcons.

“Cooper’s gone really well in our halves during the pre-season,” Bellamy said.

“He’s got a lot of talent and a lot of skill and know-how about the game which is no surprise given the bloodline he’s come from.

“He’s really improved physically this year with his speed and his physical presence and we think

at some stage he’s going to be a first-grader.”

Bellamy said young Johns’ football attributes were a mix of those of his father and uncle, although he is taller and leaner than them.

Another player with a rich pedigree, Billy Walters, the 24-yearold son of Kevin Walters, is also in line to make a first-grade debut this season after the five-eighth/ hooker steered their other feeder club Easts through to the Queensland Cup grand final.

Port Adelaide’s Jack Watts admits a video of him snorting white powder off a woman’s chest is a “shocking look”. A video emerged yesterday of him taken at Oktoberfest in Munich last October, with the AFL player claiming the substance featured was ‘Wiesn Pulver’, which is a substance made up of menthol, sugar and glucose. It is commonly taken at the beer festival as a pickme-up. A remorseful Watts said he was disappointed in himself and apologised for the hurt caused by the video.

More strife for Barba Ben Barba’s rugby league career is almost certainly over after the English RFL confirmed it would respect any ban issued against him by the NRL. Barba was sacked by the Cowboys last week after officials viewed footage of an incident at a casino.

He is being investigated by police.

NRL chief Todd Greenberg said he would refuse to register any future contract if Barba was found guilty.

“If you’re violent against a woman you can expect to be removed from the game. It starts now. I haven’t seen the footage as yet, but if it shows violence towards a woman then really there’s no debate. Ben Barba will be out of the NRL immediately and I can’t see him ever returning.”

Vintage Super Bowl Brady That super shootout everyone expected turned into a defensive standoff.

The New England Patriots showed they can win that type of championship game, too.

So after Tom Brady led one classic drive to win the Patriots their record-tying sixth Super Bowl, he perfectly summed up the 13-3 victory yesterday over the Los Angeles Rams.

“Finally got a touchdown and the defence played the best game of the year,” Brady said.

In a season in which all sorts of offensive records were set, this Super Bowl rewrote the defensive record book.

“How about our defence? How about our defence?” he said.

“They played unbelievable.”

So well that their leader linebacker Dont’a Hightower, joked they had extra incentive.

“I’m tired of hearing about Brady,” he said with a laugh.

“I won one today – we all got

one. It feels good for us to get it all.

“Shout out to him getting his, but this is a team game and it feels good to win.”

But the defence still needed vintage Brady for one drive.

He threw two perfect passes to Rob Gronkowski to set up rookie Sony Michel’s 2-yard score – the only touchdown in the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever.

That put New England up 10-3.

A late field goal clinched it.

No Super Bowl had gone into the fourth quarter without a touchdown.

This one did, tied 3-3 – even though these teams had combined to average over 60 points a game.

When the Patriots needed a score, Brady, the oldest winning quarterback in a Super Bowl at 41, completed four straight passes, including a pair covering 47 yards to Gronkowski.

The second, on which the star

tight end beat two defenders, ended at the Los Angeles 2, the only time either team was inside the 20-yard line.

Michel ran off left tackle for his sixth postseason touchdown.

“He knows to trust in me and throw that ball,” Gronkowski said, “and I’m going to grab it.”

Julian Edelman, the outstanding receiver who missed the 2017 season with a knee injury, was the game’s MVP with 10 receptions for 141 yards.

Stephen Gostkowski made a 41-yard field goal with 1:12 remaining, completing a 72-yard march that took more than three minutes off the clock and included 26-yard runs by Michel and Rex Burkhead.

It was a workmanlike conclusion for the Patriots (14-5).

They beat the top two offenses in the Chiefs and Rams (15-4) in the postseason, and tied Pittsburgh for most Super Bowl titles.

“We’re a relentless team,”

Hightower said after New England allowed the fewest points in a Super Bowl (tied with Dallas in 1972 against Miami).

“We didn’t give up.

When we play like we did tonight, we can’t be beat.”

The Rams, who reached the championship game with the aid of a major officiating error in the conference title victory at New Orleans, never really threatened to reach the end zone.

“Last time I checked, defense wins championships,” Rams running back C.J. Anderson said.

At 66, Bill Belichick became the oldest winning Super Bowl coach.

The Patriots beat the Rams, then representing St. Louis, to begin their dynastic run in the 2002 game.

They also have beaten Carolina and Philadelphia (2004 and 05, the last repeater); the Seahawks in 2015; and the Falcons in 2017.

The Black Caps fast bowlers are back in the swing of things but their all-rounder puzzle has just become harder to solve.

Inspired swing bowling from Matt Henry and Trent Boult reduced India to 18-4 at Westpac Stadium on Sunday, but no other New Zealand bowler could produce the same threat, as the visitors recovered to post 252 on their way to victory in the fifth and final ODI. After Henry and Boult knocked over the vaunted Indian top order, Ambati Rayudu (90) and Vijay Shankar (45) added 98 for the fifth wicket, before Kedar Jadhav (34) and Hardik Pandya (45 from 22 balls) completed a rearguard recovery.

Henry claimed 4-35 and Boult 3-39, and their renewed potency put the Black Caps bowling attack in a much better position than they found themselves in two games ago, where nobody could stop India’s batting dominance.

However, while Boult and Henry combined for 7-74 from their 19.5 overs, the other 30 overs saw just one wicket claimed for 166 runs as India first rebuilt, then attacked.

Arguably, New Zealand were a specialist bowler short, with five all-rounders combining for the 30 overs, and raising some legitimate selection quandaries in the middle order.

Those all-rounder selection debates could now also include Colin Munro, who got through 10 overs of valuable medium pace, restricting India during the middle overs.

Munro proved hard to get away, bowling an excellent line and length, taking the pace off the ball, as his first eight overs went for just 25 runs.

Rayudu smacked two sixes off his last three balls to sully his figures somewhat, but Munro proved by far the most effective bowler of all the all-round options.

While Munro was recalled to the team as an opener in place of the injured Martin Guptill, making just 24, if the Black Caps stick with their preferred opening partnership of Guptill and Henry Nicholls, it could give him an avenue to claim a spot in the middle order.

A potentially devastating finisher with the bat, if Munro can also produce with the ball, he could become an alluring option for the balance of the side, especially when compared with the bevy of all-rounders jostling for position.

Munro now joins Doug Bracewell, Todd Astle, Mitchell Santner, Colin de Grandhomme and Jimmy Neesham as the all-round options in the middle order, and none particularly stood out from the pack in the India series.

In brief Bizarre umpiring call Stars captain Glenn Maxwell was left baffled by an umpiring decision in their 27-run loss to the Scorchers.

Ben Dunk was given out despite the Scorchers fielder saying he didn’t catch the ball. Nick Hobson shook his head, but keeper Cameron Bancroft thought maybe the ball had carried. The umpires gave a soft signal dismissal and sent the decision to the third umpire. With vision too blurry to make a conclusive call, the soft signal was upheld.

“It was pretty disappointing that the fielder says he doesn’t catch it, and the bowler accepts it and walks back to the mark, and somehow it’s been given out on the field,” Maxwell said.

Starc stars for Aussies Mitchell Starc has claimed a 10wicket haul for the match as Australia roared back to form with a 366-run flogging of Sri Lanka in the final test. Starc claimed 5-46 in Sri Lanka’s second innings, to finish with 10-100 for the match, while Pat Cummins took 3-15 as the hosts wrapped up the 2-0 series victory.

It came after Joe Burns, Kurtis Patterson, Travis Head and Usman Khawaja each made centuries, setting up Australia’s first multi-game series victory in any format since the ball-tampering saga.

Stags defend tiny total Tech were the big winners on a day where only one of the two games that were to make up round three of Mid Canterbury Cricket’s Muirhead Rosebowl open grade competition got off the ground.

Methven were forced to default their match against Coldstream, making the call on Friday night with only five players available to play.

The default meant that the topof-the-table clash between the Tech Stags and Lauriston was the only game to take to the field on Saturday, and it was the Tech side which left the Ashburton Domain the happier of the two.

Tech batted first and were all out for just 94, with Sam Hurley top scoring with 23 and Andrew Veint the next best with 18.

The wickets were shared

around by Lauriston’s bowlers, with Tom Ravenscroft taking 3/6 off his 4.4 overs, while Tom Hanrahan and Matt Pawsey took two wickets each.

It wasn’t the biggest score of the season, but it proved to be enough for the Stags.

In reply, Lauriston opener Andrew Letham hit a couple of fours on his way to 22, but that was about where the good news

stopped for his side. Scott Maher was the only other batsman to make it to double figures, as the country team was rolled for just 54.

All teams were missing their top players for the latest round of club cricket, with the Mid Canterbury representative team in action in their Hawke Cup challenge against Southland in Invercargill.

Usman Khawaja’s second-innings century against Sri Lanka shouldn’t save him from being axed from Australia’s Ashes squad, according to test legend Ian Chappell. A noted critic of Khawaja, Chappell was unmoved by Khawaja’s 101 not out at Manuka Oval on Sunday. “If I was a selector that (innings) wouldn’t be making any difference to my thinking whether I had him in or out for England,” Chappell said. “It was some pretty pedestrian bowling ... McCullum calls time on Big Bash career The BBL will lose a little more Bash as big-hitting veteran Brendon McCullum calls time on his Brisbane Heat career to start the transition into cricket’s coaching ranks.

Friday’s must-win clash for the Heat against the Melbourne Stars will be the 37-year-old’s final BBL home game after he decided to retire from Australia’s domestic Twenty20 competition.

McCullum broke the news to his team-mates after blasting a half-century to help the Heat to a six-wicket win over the Adelaide Strikers on Sunday night.

“I will continue to play T20 cricket in 2019 in various competitions around the world and will then look to transition into a coaching career,” McCullum told the playing group.

“The prospect of being able to trans-

fer the skills, experience and leadership I have been lucky enough to bank over my long T20 and also international career into coaching is very exciting.”

The New Zealand master blaster has belted 920 runs and five fifties in 34 matches for the Heat since debuting in the inaugural 2011-12 season.

After retiring from international cricket, McCullum returned in 2016 to captain the side before ceding the top job to fellow Bash Brother Chris Lynn.

“It was a privilege to captain them,” he said, after his decision not to take up the option on his contract for next season.

“Having been there at the start, and then seeing (BBL) grow and evolve into one of the best T20 competitions in the world has been great to be part of.”

The foundation Heat star was confident in the BBL’s direction despite dwindling crowds, criticism over the expanded 14-match season and lack of star power.

“The BBL will get stronger and better from here too as everyone becomes more comfortable with the format and the clubs continue to be bold in their planning and preparations,” McCullum said.

McCullum’s sixth-placed Brisbane Heat (5-7) remain a mathematical chance to play finals, and extend his BBL career.

However, they must beat Melbourne (6-6) and then rely on the Stars losing to the Sydney Sixers as well as the Sydney Thunder (5-7) falling to Hobart while net run rate could also be a factor.

Tiger v The Laz: who wins?

By Michael Guerin There was one question on everybody’s lips after Tiger Tara destroyed his rivals in the $500,000 Hunter Cup at Melton.

And it is the question we will never be able to answer.

Is this version, the enormously-improved version of Tiger Tara as good as his now-retired nemesis Lazarus?

Maybe they shouldn’t be the questions people ask after Tiger Tara had completed a Melton triple crown on Saturday night, having already won the Victoria Cup and Inter Dominion there this season.

Add to that his bravest of nose seconds to Thefixer in the New Zealand Cup at Addington in November and you have one of the great seasons in modern pacing history.

Maybe Tiger and his army of fans should be able to bathe in that glory and the promise of a Miracle Mile now a month away.

But that is not the way the human brain, particularly the racing brain, usually works.

Because Tiger Tara has been so dominant over most of Australasia’s best pacers this season that you have to wonder is he just clearly better than he was in the last two seasons when Kiwi champ Lazarus would routinely thrash him.

Yes, Tiger Tara scored victories over Lazarus in lead-up races to more serious targets, but the stats are stacked unarguably in Lazarus’s favour before he was sold to the States last year and subsequently retired one of the fastest milers ever.

A brief stat check: Lazarus beat Tiger Tara in one New Zealand Cup by 10 lengths, by five in another. And last season when Tiger Tara led in both the Inter Dominion and the Hunter Cup, Lazarus sat parked, covering up to 20m more and destroyed him.

So there can be no argument that Lazarus was a better horse than Tiger Tara.

But if Laz had stuck around and Tiger Tara has improved as much as his times suggest, would their rivalry still be as one-sided?

Todd McCarthy buzzing from his record spin around Melton, stopped short of saying the tables would be turned in the race we will never see.

“I have no doubts Tiger has improved, he has just kept getting better,” says McCarthy. “And Kevin has learned about the horse too and maybe trains him differently now than he used to.

“So he is definitely better. But beating Lazarus regularly, I am not sure about that.

“But I wish Laz was still here because it would be special to

watch them go at it now.”

With times all but irrelevant as a class guide these days, it is hard to fathom that Tiger Tara has improved enough to be considered in the same class at Lazarus had the latter held his form this season.

And there is a reality racing promoters never like to admit even though they whisper about it in secret: that this open class crop isn’t that good.

Shorn of an injured Chicago Bull and with New Zealand’s best pacer maybe Turn It Up, who isn’t ready for the Grand Circuit yet, maybe Tiger Tara is beating up good but not great open class rivals.

The possible exception to that is Thefixer, who beat Tiger Tara in the New Zealand Cup, albeit with a far easier trip.

So it might be unfair to pit 2019 Tiger Tara against 2017 and 2018 Lazarus.

But the gut, the eye and their overall strike rates suggest that as special as Tiger Tara is now, his deeds also serve to remind us how truly great Lazarus was. - HRNZ

GAWN, Allan – 19-01-1931 – 04-02-2019 Passed away peacefully at Radius Millstream Resthome, Ashburton, on February 4, 2019, after a courageous battle. Aged 88 years. Dearly loved husband of the late Barbara, loved father of Steve and Pauline, Debby and Bill Cabout, adored Grandie of Simon and Aimée, Sara and Shannon, Sam and Lucy and his two great grandchildren due in April. Defending Ballinger Belt holder John Snowden was unable to become the first person to defend the title and be “chaired off” by his fellow club members like in 2018.

John Snowden has come within five points of becoming the first person to defend the Ballinger Belt.

The belt, which is the oldest trophy in New Zealand sport, is awarded to the winner of the national rifle association championships, which are currently being held in Trentham.

Shooting an aggregate score of 557.042, Snowden was pipped at the post by Australian Jim Bailey, who shot 562.067.

It was a cruel twist in results, with Bailey finishing as runner-up to Snowden in last year’s competition.

The national championships were shot for over three days, with Snowden making a slow start on day one, sitting well down the lad-

der well outside the top 50.

Day two was moving day for Snowden however, flying up the leaderboard to sit in second at the end of shooting.

On the final day of shooting on Saturday he was unable to move any further, staying behind Bailey.

All eyes now shift to the World Long-Range Shooting Championships which are being held jointly with the nationals.

Shooting began yesterday, and will run through to Thursday afternoon where the finals will be shot over 1000 metres.

Ashburton was also well represented in the World Veterans Teams match and the World U25 Teams match.

John Miller was the second best shooter in the New Zealand Veterans team, shooting an aggregate of 197.012 on the way to his team’s

third place finish, with Australia first and Great Britain second.

Megan Snowden was a late callup to the New Zealand under-25 team and shot well as the team finished third, with Australia finishing first and Great Britain second.

Once the Long Range World Championships are completed, the Palma Match, which is a longrange competition between international teams will take place.
