GPs flat out with sick kids BY CAITLIN PORTER
CAITLIN.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury GPs are struggling to cope with a dramatic increase in doctors’ visits from children aged six to 13-yearsold. Ashburton GP spokesperson Mick Tarry said there had been approximately a 20 per cent increase in presentations of under-13s since doctors’ visits became free in July of last year.
Locally, there had also been a 30 per cent increase in after-hours visits, and that was of concern due to mounting costs, he said. “After-hours costs are a worry as the scheme is cost neutral when seen at after-hours clinics, but the funding is insufficient to cover individual call-outs outside of clinic times,” Dr Tarry said. The cost neutral nature of the scheme meant there was no future proofing and
the level of funding for the free GP visits was not guaranteed to match the rate of increasing costs. Previously, Dr Gayle O’Duffy of Methven said the scheme would need to run for a year before it would be known whether funding was adequate.
