Identity theft leads to prison A 74-year-old Ashburton man who stole his brother’s identity to claim superannuation was jailed for four months yesterday.

Julian Theo Crosby Giblin will be deported to Fiji following the jail term and there is no prospect of him repaying nearly $21,000 paid to him by the Ministry of Social Development.

Giblin appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday for sentencing on three charges of deception and Judge

Joanna Maze said the short jail term was a merciful response to his circumstances.

Giblin had been an overstayer in New Zealand since 2000 and used his brother’s identity to get a driver’s licence and passport. He used those documents to support an application for superannuation.

Hot summer follows driest November

Petition launched to overturn i-SITE closure

An electronic petition is the latest weapon being used in the fight to bring back Ashburton’s i-SITE. Linda Bray of Ashburton has organised the petition, and it is being welcomed with open arms by the man who has led the charge to date, Ashburton retailer Tony Todd.

Both Bray and Todd say the replacement of an information booth at the Ashburton Public Library and booking services at House of Travel, do not replace the one-stop-shop appeal of the old i-SITE. Bray said both services needed to be together, in a high profile and easily-accessible location with signage, just like the Ashburton i-SITE on East Street had been before it was closed down in October.

She added that the i-SITE had been a huge help to her four years ago when she was convenor of the six-day National Beekeepers Association 100-year conference, catering for more than 300 attendees.

She was able to make arrangements for delegates, and once they arrived here they could use the i-SITE services to source additional accommodation, restaurants and

“I really felt they gave me so much help,” Bray said.

Todd urged as many people as possible to add their support to the petition. The initiative was representative of the huge amount of support for re-opening the i-SITE.

“The public support we have had has been overwhelming,” Todd said.

He and supporters planned to keep chipping away until the Ashburton District Council saw the error of its ways, and he was investigating other approaches.

“We are definitely not going away,” Todd said.

She said prison was required to mark the seriousness of the offending, to deter others and to reflect the ease

with which Giblin took advantage of his wrongdoing.

Giblin has been living in emergency housing provided by Presbyterian Support Services since admitting the charges in October but the agency said it did not have the resources to continue

supporting him.

Giblin came to New Zealand from Fiji in 1997 on a visitor’s visa which expired in 2000. His brother John Giblin was a New Zealand citizen but lived in Australia and Julian Giblin then took his identity.

The deception only came to light when his brother applied for a New Zealand superannuation.

Judge Maze said Giblin had obtained $20,943 by the deception but she could not order reparation as Giblin had no means to pay.

High December temperatures have come hot on the heels of Mid Canterbury’s driest November on record.

The MetService has reported Ashburton received just six millimetres of rain for the month.

It could be the beginning of a sizzling summer, with NIWA having forecast above average temperatures in its longterm outlook through to February.

Rainfall totals are equally likely to be in the near normal to below normal range.

MetService meteorologist Hannah Moes said the warm and mostly dry conditions so far this December were forecast to continue this week, with a ridge of high pressure continuing to affect the country.

Northerlies beginning to spread across southern and central New Zealand were boosting temperatures for eastern areas through the Foehn effect – where air dries and warms as it travels across the mountains.

Temperatures reached a high of about 27 degrees celsius in Ashburton yesterday.

A handful of families turning up to the outdoor Tinwald swimming pool for its 4pm opening time were disappointed initially when they were told they would have to wait another half hour to an hour.

This was due to chlorine levels being too high.

However, within 20 minutes the pool opened, much to the relief of parents and grandparents with children who had been excited for a summer swim.

The pool opened for the season at the weekend, and hot days have seen high visitor numbers, EA Networks Centre sports facility assistant manager Richard Wood said.

EA Networks Centre had also seen high numbers due to the hot weather.

Mid Canterbury’s dry weather follows flooding during winter, and the district is well ahead in the rainfall stakes compared to an average year. It has received 864.8 millimetres of rain for the year to date, compared to the average for the year to date of 643 millimetres.

Other places which have recorded their driest November are Christchurch and Oamaru, while Wellington and Masterton have recorded their second driest November, and Timaru and Napier their third driest.

Pre-Christmas wish – more snow

Mt Hutt Ski Area has not ruled out opening on Christmas Eve for a day’s skiing, despite snow melting rapidly in hot summer temperatures.

Operations manager James Urquhart said there was still the possibility of fresh snow falling between now and December 24.

“Stranger things have happened,” he said.

“It’s not abnormal to get snow once a month all year round.”

He recalled one snowfall a few years ago around Christmas, and keen skiers making the most of it by hiking up in the area.

Opening on Christmas Eve was something the ski area guaranteed to do last year if it won New Zealand’s Best Ski Resort and if there was enough snow. It won the award, but unfortunately there was not enough snow.

It postponed the Christmas Eve skiing day to 2017, and as the ski area closed for the season in midOctober, there was so much snow it looked like it could be a goer.

The base was 2.5 metres, after it had been as high as 3.8 metres, the biggest base in 17 years.

Urquhart said the warm summer days had since taken their toll, and there had been a thunder storm over the mountain last week, dropping 50 millimetres of rain. This washed away some snow.

It’s Tinwald’s turn to roll out the tinsel and share the Christmas cheer this weekend.

The annual Tinwald Christmas Festival will be in full swing on Sunday between 11am and

4pm. The event had to be shifted from its usual date to accommodate the Longbeach Coastal challenge, but it will still be hosted in its usual site among the marvels of the Plains Museum.

According to organiser Lor-

raine Oakley, the hosts are “delighted and excited” about this year’s festival.

It will feature a forty-stall assortment full of “Christmassy bits and pieces”, along with pony rides, a pop-up playground, steam train rides and

entertainment performances for the ears and eyes. “We’ll also have a model display and the pieces from the combined craft group,” said Oakley.

She said Santa will be stopping by from 1.30pm and hearing children’s wish-lists in the

Waterton Church.

“It will be a nice family oriented day,” said Oakley.

“And we’re hoping to get lots of locals.”

Entry is free and the event will be held regardless of the weather.

Two Canty lakes closed due to unusual trout rash

Two Canterbury lakes have been closed to all fishing after the discovery of trout in them with unusual rashes and spots.

Fish & Game communications manager Don Rood said fish from Lake Grasmere and Lake Sarah, both beside State Highway 73, which runs through Arthurs Pass, have been sent to the Ministry for Primary Industries for testing, which is expected to take two-to-three weeks.

He said the cause of the rashes and spots, found on both brown and rainbow trout, was unknown.

seen anything like it before. We thought it was best to get on the front foot so we notified anglers, MPI and DOC.”

Fish & Game has advised anyone fishing in the Canterbury region to thoroughly clean all fishing tackle and equipment, including boots, waders and nets.

“It’s a classic case of check, clean and dry,“ Rood said, adding that drying equipment in the sun was recommended as the sun’s UV light was a powerful sanitiser.

Meanwhile one of New Zealand’s biggest fishing companies, Sanford, is being praised by Fish & Game for halting operations near Banks Peninsula to avoid catching salmon.

Sanford has instructed its skippers not to fish in the Salmon Conservation Area near Banks Peninsula because there are too

many salmon there.

Sanford’s decision was prompted after one of its vessels caught nearly 400 salmon as by-catch last weekend. While the majority – 372 – were escaped farm salmon, 22 were wild bred fish.

The vessel was targeting red cod and barracouta within the Salmon Conservation Area and legally landed the salmon as bycatch.

Central South Island Fish & Game scientist Mark Webb said Sanford’s decision was welcome.

“Sanford has voluntarily removed its vessels from fishing within the area even though they are legally entitled to fish there,” Webb said.

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COURT

Suspended driver’s term extended Others to appear before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday were: Kristopher Thomas Davidson, 24, was fined $200 and disqualified from driving for six months from December 18 after admitting driving while his licence was suspended on Pudding Hill Road last month. Davidson was also ordered to pay $130 court costs.

Police said his licence was suspended for three months on September 19 for excess demerit points but he was seen speeding in Methven on November 3.

Lawyer Paul Bradford said Davidson had been removing himself from a domestic situation.

Nicholas James Boulden admitted a charge of assaulting his brother and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called in the next six months.

Judge Maze said the sentence was to encourage him not to reoffend. She said the assault appeared out of character at a difficult time in his life.

Andrew Franklyn McLeod, 58, admitted charges of refusing blood and careless use on Tinwald West-

erfield Mayfield Road.

McLeod’s car hit a culvert and rolled on September 16, ending up in a hedge. He left the scene but was tracked down and then refused evidential breath and blood tests to test for the presence of alcohol.

Lawyer Jane Argyle Reed said McLeod had been under stress as his wife was very ill. He had already sought counselling for his alcohol use. He had previous convictions for drink driving in 2000 and 2013.

Judge Maze sentenced him to 40 hours’ community work, six months’ supervision and disqualified him from driving indefinitely.

She also ordered him to pay $75 for medical expenses and confiscated his car.

Daniel Thomas Gundry was sentenced to 100 hours community work and disqualified from driving for 12 months after admitting charges of driving while his licence was suspended, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

The charges arose from separate incidents. Gundry had his licence suspended for three months in March last year due to excess demerit points but was caught driving on Oak Grove in April.

On September 19 this year, he

was clocked speeding at 92km/h on Walnut Avenue and then at 131km/h on Belt Road. His licence was suspended then for 28 days, but he was caught behind the wheel again on September 25.

Judge Maze said Twamley could apply for a zero alcohol licence at the end of his disqualification.

Ngatokorua Ngere Uka was fined $600 and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting driving drunk on East Street last month.

He was also ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Uka admitted having a few beers with friends and blew 711mcg.

Peter Raymond Jones forged letters from a counsellor so he could get a disability allowance.

For nearly three years Jones was paid a disability allowance and reimbursed cash for counselling sessions that did not take place. He was paid $8195 and used the money for drugs. Jones is currently repaying the debt at $11 a week from his current benefit. He will be sentenced on February 19.

Judge Maze dismissed charges of benefit fraud against Annzita Kahurangi Marks after the Ministry of Social Development failed to appear to prosecute the charges.

She said the charges were dismissed for want of prosecution, which meant the department could lay them again, though clearly they should have had someone in court.

Marks had faced two charges of wilfully misleading a social welfare officer so she could receive benefits.

Donald Grant Twamley was sentenced to 65 hours’ community work and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting

Siddharth Arun Kinare was fined $300 and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting driving with excess blood alcohol at Rakaia on July 8. He was also ordered to pay $130 court costs, $75 medical costs and $109.25 analyst fees.

Kinare had been drinking at the Rakaia Tavern and decided to move his car 30 metres down the street to his home, but he was stopped by police. A blood test revealed 128 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Sebastian Ramirez blew 606mcg when he was stopped by police on Creek Road on September 30. He admitted a charge of driving with excess blood alcohol.

Judge Maze fined him $500, disqualified him from driving for six months and ordered him to pay court costs of $130.

Marion Moana Hall admitted drink driving on Beatty Crescent on November 24. She blew 522mcg when breath tested.

Hall was fined $400, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

A bad day at work cost Cynthia Rewa Bryant $1000. She was spotted driving erratically on Middle Road by a member of the public, who followed her to Cavendish Street.

Police spoke to her and she later gave a blood sample that showed 240 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, three times the legal limit. Lawyer Keith Owen said Bryant had had a bad day at work and admitted driving drunk.

She was fined $1000, ordered to pay analyst fees of $109.25 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Survey delivers surprising results

The weekend’s scorching weather proved no obstacle for an army of Forest and Bird volunteers trekking across Mid Canterbury’s backyard and tallying the district’s native birds.

Armed with notebooks, binoculars and boots, the group undertook the annual upper Ashburton River survey on Sunday to see how local riverbed nesters are faring.

One group worked from Buick’s bridge, and a second covered several kilometres from Valetta Bridge, with both pleasing and concerning findings.

Ashburton Forest and Bird chair Edith Smith said the first group had spotted over 200 banded dotterels along with the “reassuring” sight of a colony of terns, and a “lucky” sighting of a wrybill.

However, she said the second group uncovered a colony of over 5000 black-backed gulls, which she said can harm and intervene with other more threatened, native species.

“We were shocked to hear it,” she said.

“It’s a hugely dominant quantity.”

Although Forest and Bird’s

data was yet to be fully collaborated and assessed, Smith she was pleased with how things had gone.

“We never know exactly what we are going to find,” she said.

She said having a full team of volunteers had helped in the expansive area, and encouraged anyone interested in lending a hand to help out with future surveys.

“It’s not until you walk in the

river and see it for yourself that you can really appreciate these birds,” she said.

The next survey will take place around the Ashburton Lakes in winter.

Skydivers drop in on school fete

A bustling Borough School fete on the weekend welcomed hundreds of visitors, sunshine aplenty and even several skydivers.

The school’s main fundraiser for the year kicked off on Saturday morning after weeks of planning, and was hailed “hot but very successful” by its organisers.

“Hundreds of people came through the gate,” said fete committee member Alice Czerski.

“It was a really good day.”

A Treasure Island theme saw plenty of pirates on site, and the

school was able to fundraise for new sails of its own – albeit of the shade-sail variety.

Czerski said the school’s art auction had proven particularly successful, along with fundraising raffles held prior.

Other activities on site included a wacky hair stall, performances, a treasure hunt, digger driving, pony rides, bouncy castle, food and beverage offerings and the visit from several skydivers.

Czerski said the school used orange smoke to signal a landing location to the Skydiving Kiwis group, who signalled back with green smoke as they land-

ed on the junior field.

“Hundreds of people stood and watched as they came down,” she said.

The day attracted visitors to the Mid Canterbury Santa Parade before and after the floats travelled down adjacent streets – including a pirate-ship float from Borough School itself.

Czerski said Borough School’s community spirit was evident at the fete.

When you think about volunteers as first responders or in our emergency services one thought that comes to mind for Dellwyn Moylan Mid Canterbury Coordinator of Volunteering Mid & South is blood. And there is some symbolism in that concept when Dellwyn thinks of some of the wonderful and amazing volunteers in our emergency services.

Dellwyn says that volunteering flows through some people’s veins. One person who has volunteering flowing in their veins in Jill Newton. Jill volunteers with Red Cross, Civil Defence, Salvation Army Emergency Caravan, Town Watch and has been a volunteer with Victim Support.

And then there are families where volunteering is in the blood, people like Phil Kenny a volunteer for 40 years with Fire and Emergency along with his brother Alistair and following in the footsteps of their father, the late Fire Chief Keith Kenny.

Age is not a barrier to any volunteering, we have younger people who step up to help others in times of crisis and emergencies, who give willingly and freely of their time in many areas of volunteering.

What makes these people

International Volunteer Day (IVD) mandated by the UN General Assembly, is held each year on December 5. It is viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organisations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities, nongovernmental organisations (NGOs), United Nations agencies, government authorities and the private sector.

Apart from mobilising thousands of volunteers every year, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development by advocating for the recognition of volunteers and working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming.

‘Nobody applies at all’

Just Water chief executive Tony Falkenstein.

Falkenstein said two people – aged under 30 – did not turn up for work yesterday after accepting jobs at Just Water.

Jones said over the weekend that he wanted to get young unemployed people “off the couch” and into work.

A new programme called Working for your Country will be part of four new projects Jones will take to Cabinet in the coming weeks, he said on TVNZ1’s Q+A. Statistics NZ’s latest data, released on November 1, showed the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 4.6 per cent in the September 2017 quarter, down from 4.8 per cent in the June 2017 quarter.

This was the lowest unemployment rate since the December 2008 quarter, when it was 4.4 per cent.

In the September 2017 quarter, the unemployment rate for men was 4.1 per cent, the lowest rate since the September 2008 quarter, Stats NZ said.

By comparison, the unemployment rate for women was 5.3 per cent, up from 4.9 per cent in the previous quarter.

The unemployment rate for Maori was 9.9 per cent, down from 10.6 per cent a year ago.

Kids benefit from big spend Kiwi Christmas shoppers typically spend between $25 and $50 per gift and splash out the most on their kids, a new survey suggests.

The research from Trade Me found that half of the 550 people surveyed claimed to get their shopping done in October or earlier.

While 12 per cent get their shopping done in the week before the holidays, 1 per cent leave it to the eleventh hour and get their gifts on Christmas Eve. Thirty-seven per cent of those in the survey spent the most on their kids and although vouchers aren’t the most creative of gifts, half of the respondents were happy to receive them in their Christmas stocking.

“More than 40 per cent of Kiwis told us they find Christmas gift shopping stressful,” said Trade Me’s Millie Silverster.

“We all know it’s an expensive time of year too.

“Given [nearly] 40 per cent of us plan on spending between $25 and $50 on each present that adds up quick.”

“L.O.L Surprise! Dolls are already becoming highly sought after toys on Trade Me as local and international retailers have already begun selling out.

“We also see outdoor furniture, BBQs and mountain bikes go mad at this time of year as Kiwis prepare to get out and about this summer.”

Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones is advocating a work-for-the-dole scheme, but Just Water chief executive Tony Falkenstein is having trouble getting people just to turn up for work.

Falkenstein told Newstalk ZB host Leighton Smith that he was paying above minimum wages but was having trouble attracting delivery people, when all that was needed by way of qualification was a driver licence “and a bit of muscle”.

Just Water supplies water coolers, drinking water and filters for the home and office market.

“I’m ringing up very harassed because of this unemployed problem,” Falkenstein said.

“We just cannot get people to even turn up for jobs, let alone apply,” he said.

“We’ve done student job search – nobody applies at all,” he said.

“We pay above the minimum wage and we just can’t get them here,” he said.

T

o many people biosecurity is all about stopping threats to agriculture and environment at the border.

The reality is, it gets much closer to home than that, and Mid Canterbury currently has at least three separate potential pests or diseases that require vigilance and care from those who live and work here.

Two of those have been on the radar for a while but the latest has come out of left field and has Fish & Game staffers scratching their heads.

The red rash and spots discovered on rainbow and brown trout in two Canterbury lakes in recent days has led to the closure of those lakes, reinforced by increased reminders of the importance of cleaning gear and equipment.

No one knows just what we’re dealing with but the actions of Fish & Game should be applauded. As soon as they were made aware of the problem they acted rather than dithered.

If the fishing community is lucky it will all come to nothing but any type of threat must be taken seriously until it’s been thoroughly investigated and proven otherwise.

In recent times the livestock and arable sectors have also had to deal with serious biosecurity incursions.

Earlier this year mycoplasma bovis was found just down the road in South Canterbury and North Otago, which has led to the slaughter of thousands of cattle.

While at this stage it looks like the Ministry for Primary Industries has contained the outbreak, no one is getting ahead of themselves, with testing to continue for some time yet.

Arable farmers know just how that feels, after the arrival of velvetleaf, known as one of the worst weeds in the world, about a year-and-a-half ago.

That threat has not gone away, with the Foundation for Arable Research reminding farmers only days ago that the risk of the prolific weed germinating in paddocks planted in fodder beet in 2015 remains very high.

All three situations illustrate that border controls are only half the issue, for unwanted outbreaks are bound to happen now and then.

The real test is how we deal with those when they happen, both those closely affected and the community as a whole.

iosecurity was a key discussion point at a number of Federated Farmers events that I attended in Wellington in the last fortnight.

First up I chaired a meeting of the Federated Farmers Arable Industry Group Council.

The council is comprised of all the provincial arable chairpersons from throughout New Zealand, plus the group’s executive.

We worked our way through some thorough debates on issues that matter to arable farmers: grain pricing supply and demand, transport – and most importantly biosecurity.

Biosecurity is a hot topic for the arable industry group and there are two main reasons for this.

Arable farmers need a biosecurity system that ensures harmful pests and diseases are kept out of New Zealand so international markets continue to demand the seed and grain products we produce.

For example, should velvetleaf establish itself in our pasture and crops it has the potential to reduce real GDP by between $294 and $485 million by 2030.

There is a real risk that we may erode our key competitive advantages if we let weeds such as velvetleaf get a hold in New Zealand.

That’s why the arable industry, through FAR and the Federated Farmers Arable Industry Group, have been so active in the velvetleaf, pea weevil and blackgrass responses over the

There is a real risk that we may erode our key competitive advantages if we let weeds such as velvetleaf (above) get a hold in New Zealand. past 18 months. Precisely how these weeds arrived is still being discussed at length.

Velvetleaf is a cunning foe. It drops upwards of 15,000 seeds which can live in the soil for up to 50 years. At the Arable Council meeting, speakers from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) presented the proposed long term management plan (LTM) 2017-2021 for this tenacious pest.

The proposed LTM focuses on progressive containment of existing infestations of velvetleaf and preventing the establishment of new ones. Eradication is entirely possible in the short term in areas with low numbers of infestations, but it will take much longer to eradicate from areas of Canterbury, Otago and Southland with a greater area of contaminated seed planted.

MPI will lead the LTM with support from regional councils and industry stakeholders such

as FAR and Federated Farmers.

MPI’s Velvetleaf Governance Group met in late November to discuss the proposed LTM for velvetleaf and some of the costings associated with the plan. I am the Federated Farmers appointed observer on the Governance Group and will be advocating for MPI to approve the proposed LTM and action it as soon as possible.

We cannot continue in limbo waiting for the approval of the plan; the weed is still out there growing, but there are easy actions farmers can themselves undertake to protect their own farms from the threat of new weeds, pests and diseases. For those farmers who know they received the contaminated lines, check paddocks and farms from January to around the end of April for the presence of velvetleaf and call MPI if you think you have found a plant. Request all machinery arrives on farm

cleaned down and ask for a purity and germination certificate when you purchase your seed.

Other Biosecurity risks are out there and through the review process of Import Health Standards currently underway, Federated Farmers is engaging with MPI to get these risks recognised and mitigated. We want an HIS that is fit for purpose so that in future the chance of a biosecurity disaster is reduced.

Through this and multiple other work streams Federated Farmers is returning value to our members.

i-SITE closure Three weeks ago, I travelled in a very large Inter City Bus to Invercargill to attend an Australasian Herd Conference.

The bus was almost full when I got on, along with several others including an elderly couple, one who was sitting on a walker in the tiny unseated shelter for 35 minutes that I know if.

And her elderly husband was standing. Not very appropriate on the cold, wet morning.

We stopped at many i-SITEs all the way, letting off passengers and picking up others. It was very noticeable that the bus shelters in most places were large, covered and provided seating for several people.

Sure, Ashburton for its size could do much better.

The topic of conversation recently often turns to the closing of the Ashburton i-SITE. People are dumb-founded as to why in our busy community trying to encourage visitors and tourists that we have shut down our i-SITE. One businesswoman I spoke to formerly from Australia said it

was because of the information she gathered from the i-SITE that helped her make the decision to set up business here in Ashburton.

Why is Ashburton being used as an experiment for the rest of New Zealand?

So far, I don’t seem to have come across residents, or people from other areas who agree with this move.

The feeling being the I-SITE should be a service to our community.

To Tony and the team, keep up the good work. The rest of New Zealand is looking on with interest.

War games anger N Korea The US and South Korea’s planned war games this week have already put North Korea on edge, as the rogue nation issued another threat.

The planned military drills between the two military forces will “precipitate their self-destruction”, North Korea said, a day before the exercises began.

The Vigilant Ace exercises, due to last five days, will involve more than 230 warplanes and 12,000 soldiers from both sides.

The drill which started yesterday goes until December 8 over eight air bases across the Korean Peninsula.

Trump’s troops will be using the hi-tech F-35 Lightning IIs and F-22 Raptors.

Both fighter jets are said to be stronger than North Korea’s arsenal.

F-35s can fly at speeds of 1931km/h and are capable of carrying nuclear bombs and bunker busters.

Meanwhile, the F-22 can hit speeds of up to 2414km/h and are armed with Vulcan miniguns and Sidewinder missiles.

South Korea is a key US ally in the region and relies on US military assistance for security against the North. Troops

Lawyers for the Stanford University student convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman on campus have filed a shocking argument appealing his sentence.

Brock Turner completed only half of the six-month jail term he was handed in 2016 before being released on good behaviour.

But now, the registered sex offender wants his conviction overturned and is requesting a new trial, with his argument for appeal detailed in an extraordinary 172-page document that focuses largely on how drunk the victim was on the night of the attack.

About 60 pages of the appellant’s opening brief detail the 22-year-old woman, known as Emily Doe’s, state of intoxication.

Turner was charged after two fellow Stanford students witnessed the assault taking place in January 2015 while they were riding bicycles near the famed university. Turner was 19 at the time.

Turner was found guilty in March 2016 on three counts: assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated or unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person.

The German-made submarine went missing as it was jour-

neying from the extreme southern port of Ushuaia to the city of Mar del Plata, about 400 kilometres southeast of Buenos Aires.

The navy has said the vessel’s captain reported that water entered the snorkel and caused one of the submarine’s batteries to short circuit. An explosion was later detected around the time and place where the San Juan last made contact.

In its final communication, the submarine reported it had overcome a mechanical breakdown that resulted from a short circuit due to the entry of water via the vessel’s snorkel.

Three hours later, a noise similar to an explosion was recorded 48 kilometres from where the crew had given its last report.

The position was in line with the planned path the submarine would have taken to reach its base in Mar del Plata, the navy has said.

An international armada of rescue ships backed by aircraft – and thousands of personnel – has been hunting for the submarine.

Object found in sub search Argentina’s navy says it’s trying to make a visual inspection of another object that registered on a sonar search for remains of a submarine that vanished 18 days ago with 44 crew members aboard.

Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi told a news conference yesterday that the new object was detected at a depth of 950 metres.

Balbi earlier said that inspection of another object by a Russian submersible revealed it was the wreck of a fishing vessel.

“It was confirmed that it wasn’t the submarine’s shell” but a sunken fishing vessel, Balbi said.

The navy “regrets that without a rigorous analysis expectations were generated in the families and society, which must now face another frustration,” Balbi said.

The search is taking place near the last known location of the ARA San Juan before it went silent off the Atlantic coast on November 15.

In a series of tweets, Trump questioned the direction of the federal law enforcement agency and wrote that after Comey, whom Trump fired in May, the FBI’s reputation is “in Tatters — worst in History!” He vowed to “bring it back to greatness.” The president also retweeted a post saying new FBI Director Chris Wray “needs to clean house”.

The president seized on reports that a veteran FBI counterintelligence agent was removed from Mueller’s team last summer after the discovery of an exchange of text messages that were viewed as potentially anti-Trump.

The agent, Peter Strzok, had also worked on the investigation of Democrat Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, said Mueller removed Strzok from the team “immediately upon learning of the allegations.” He would not elaborate on the nature of the accusations.

Parking meltdown A man angry about a parking dispute stabbed two people and then drove into a group of pedestrians on a sidewalk yesterday, leaving one person dead and several others injured, one critically, police said. The violent altercation started around 4.30am outside a hookah lounge in Queens, when the driver of a white Hyundai sedan got out of his car and stabbed two other people, New York Police Department said.

Authorities said the driver was in custody.

Kwaussie word of year The term “kwaussie” – a hybrid of Kiwi and Aussie – has been named Australia’s word of the year. The portmanteau came to prominence in 2017 through the nation’s dual citizenship political saga, said the Australian National Dictionary Centre. It describes a person who is a dual citizen of Australia and New Zealand – as was the case with Australia’s deputy prime minister, Barnaby Joyce. Mr Joyce was removed from office in October for being a kwaussie.

He won back his seat in a byelection on Saturday after renouncing his New Zealand citizenship.

Bali flights resume Gushing ash from Bali’s Mount Agung volcano has dissipated into a wispy plume of steam, and Australian airlines that cancelled some flights to the Indonesian resort island on the weekend have returned to near-normal schedules.

Fifth meningitis death A West Australian woman has died after contracting meningococcal disease. The woman, believed to be aged in her 20s, is the fifth victim of the serogroup W type of meningococcal in WA this year.

So far this year there have been 40 cases of the disease, up from 23 in 2016, with a spike in the number of W and Y strains well above the long-term average of less than one case per year. A free vaccination programme for people aged 15 to 19 is being offered.

Dairy farm opens up its gates

Mayfield dairy farmers James and Jacqui Murdoch are encouraging anyone interested in finding out more about how a dairy farm operates to come along to their property this Sunday.

The Murdochs are taking part in Fonterra’s nationwide Open Gates initiative, which invites people to visit farms in their area, talk to farmers, look around their properties and find out more about what those people are doing to protect waterways in their area.

James said it’s a great opportunity for members of the public to talk to farmers, so they can better understand how farms operate on a day-to-day level.

Fonterra ran two pilot open days in the North Island and those events were successful enough that 40 farms around the country will open their gates to the public on Sunday.

Many people today do not have the same ability to get on to a farm as they once might have done, James said.

“Things have changed a bit in that way compared to the old days. This is an opportunity to bridge that gap.”

Having experienced the ups and downs of dry stock farming, in 2010 the Murdochs decided to convert to dairy for the spring of 2011.

When they were doing the con-

version they were aware of the need to adopt modern technology to future-proof the environmental path of dairying in Canterbury.

They built an irrigation pond to enhance irrigation reliability, which has proved to also be a haven for ducks and black swans.

“All our waterways are fenced off and we lined the effluent pond and put in a pump so the filtered effluent water can be applied along with the irrigation water.

“The irrigation company we get our water from requires us to do environmental plans and these are done to a high standard to meet the requirements of the local regional council (ECan).

“We also have moisture sensors, which allow us to monitor water requirements. We continue to enhance the property with tree planting and plan to do more.”

James said it is preferable for people who are interested in coming along to their State Highway 72 property to register on the Fonterra website first, but people who don’t won’t be turned away.

It’s also preferable for those who do visit to bring gumboots, he said, as they will need to go through a sterile footbath.

Fonterra will be there on the day with ice creams and other products to give away.

The event, which will run from 1pm to 4pm, will be very suitable for families.

The Arable Research in Action field day at Chertsey always attracts a good crowd interested to hear details of the latest arable industry developments.

Arable research in spotlight Everything is in place for the Arable Research in Action (ARIA) field day at Chertsey tomorrow.

The event, organised by the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR), showcases trial work being carried out at the foundation’s research site at Chertsey.

The day will feature 12 presentations, which will cover many issues critical to cropping and related primary industries.

This year’s international speaker is Peter Botta from PCB

Consulting in South Australia, who will discuss grain storage techniques designed to protect grain quality.

Botta, a grain storage specialist, is part of a Grains Research and Development Corporation extension project with Australian growers and industry, advising on grain storage and the wider value chain.

Other presentations will include biosecurity and the cropping industry, an environmen-

tal update for cropping; making precision agriculture pay and tillage and crop rotation – the impact on soil quality.

Each presentation will be run once in the morning and again in the afternoon.

Lunch will be provided and there will be a chance to have a drink and a chat with presenters and industry attendees at the end of the day.

The event runs from 11am to 4pm.

MARKET REPORT Dairy November passes without any rain for the province and last week very hot days dried out dryland pastures rapidly.

Concerns are building for future feed supplies under the present climate although the forecasters differ as to the summer prospects.

Economists are starting to factor in the economic effects of the dry, which could prove helpful for milk prices but negative for production.

National cow numbers drop but production per head improves, as improved feeding and genetics compensates positively to total milk flows.

Changes ahead at Synlait, as its foundation leader John Penno steps aside next year to bring in new blood to take the company forward in the future.

Fonterra announce the contamination dispute with Danone has been settled at arbitration but shareholders will be grumpy that the $185 million penalty is to be financed from a lower dividend.

The kale versus beet trials reveal some interesting results, with the lower producing brassica having less negative animal health effects than its higher producing cultivar.

Bobby calf numbers processed has fallen this year, as managers rear more animals with beef and wagyu genes to cash in on the beef sector’s demand.

Lamb More falls in export lamb schedules this week confirm premiums paid for Christmas lamb have passed and pricing is readjusting back to the frozen harvest.

The dry has brought more animals into the processing queue and prices are expected to ease down further, but this week’s local trade schedules remained stable.

A similar pattern is being seen at the saleyards with increasing volumes of ewes and lambs receiving falling prices, although last week a small pen of cull ewes still sold for $256/head at Coalgate.

Beef and Lamb NZ reports a record lambing this year and reveal around 23.7 million young animals were tailed as the average lambing percentage peaked at 127.2 per cent and, coupled with more births from hoggets, well and truly compensated for lower ewe numbers.

Wool Last week’s South Island wool auction saw a price correction for most of the crossbred wools sold although mid micron and merino wools continued to attract strong demand.

Passings lifted on the back of this price fall and coarser wools have a long way to go before they return to sustainable levels for growers.

Fine weather is helping the shearing flow and many will be keen to have the wool off before the dry and dust alters the quality of wool harvested.

Beef More easing, than lifts, for beef schedules this week, as shortages for contracts attracted the rise for manufacturing beef but trade post Thanksgiving in the US is slow and, coupled with extra supply, resulted in easing demand.

Saleyard prime steers continue to sell at above $3/kg lwt and provide satisfactory returns for those who endured the difficult wet winter with heavy animals and mud.

A new CEO has been appointed for Silver Fern Farms, Simon Limmer, who comes from a strong marketing background with Zespri and an international environmental company.

These work skills will be very valuable in taking this big meat company into the future after a March start date.

Deer Another venison price lift shows there must still be space in the air freight chillers but demand continues for animals suitable to meet the chilled trade in the US and UK. The new crop of fawns will now be seen hiding underneath the seedheads as breeders look forward to next year’s weaner sales, after such a buoyant venison period.

The breeders of sires are starting to advertise their new crop of stags for sales in December and January and will also be optimistic about a positive outcome in the present market.

7 ■ Place the tenders on to an oven tray and bake for 20 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.

■ Meanwhile, cook the rice as per packet instructions.

■ To make the sauce, place the soy, tomato sauce, honey, vinegar, garlic and 2T of water in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Bring to a simmer for 2 minutes to thicken slightly.

■ Combine the dressing ingredients in a small jar and shake well.

■ To make the slaw, place the cabbage, carrot and parsley into a large bowl. Toss through the dressing and sprinkle over the peanuts.

■ To serve, take four bowls and place rice in each. Place 2 chicken tenders on top and drizzle with katsu sauce. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with slaw on the side, with a drizzle of mayonnaise over the top.

Information wanted on saleyards

W

hen the Tinwald saleyards were closed

by PGG Wrightson in December last year, Ashburton Museum had only three photographs of the 138-yearold location and little-to-no history of the saleyards at all.

Livestock sales had been taking place around Tinwald and Ashburton at least as early as 1864, however, it was not until 1881-2 that the first official sale took place, at the then properly-established Ashburton saleyards.

Over the following decades, changes and developments in livestock sales continued as the saleyards of Ashburton and Tinwald consistently supported the local agricultural community.

Until dairying became the dominant branch of agriculture for Mid Canterbury, the saleyards were booming with business. Their positive influence on the lives of many was undeniable.

A lot of money would have changed hands at these saleyards, as sheep and beef cattle were more commonly sold and maintained around Ashburton than compared to now.

While the Ashburton saleyards closed in 1953-4, the saleyards in Tinwald continued to contribute to local communities and stimulate our agricultural economy, up until last year.

Despite the saleyards’ historical importance to the Ashburton District, there are not many records or stories about this positive impact that are easily accessible.

Throughout this year some photos have been found, which may suggest that there are more out there to be gathered up.

Even more photographs are wanted, especially of the old caretakers’ residence, later the catering building near the main road.

Hopefully, there may also be some historical information held somewhere that can be put to good use, written or otherwise. What is needed are stories of experiences and events that have occurred at the saleyards over the decades.

uring the time since the first sale at the Ashburton saleyards, individuals such as stock agents, buyers, farmers, truck drivers, and auctioneers must have had some significant or interesting experiences at the saleyards – potentially stories worth preserving.

With enough stories and photographs we could add to the historical narrative of Ashburton and the district as a whole, thereby enriching our knowledge of our local area.

The Stock and Station contributed enormously to the Ashburton District, therefore there must be some memories and experiences that people may want to share with others on the subject.

Many readers will remember a recent article about museum volunteer, John Carter, who has been compiling information on this subject.

He would love to hear if you or someone you know could have either photographs to share or stories to tell.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of World War One, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men. The Ashburton Museum, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton, has erected in front of the museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. This week the Ashburton Museum honours:

Drysdale back on track Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale is back on the waters of competitive rowing as he produced a modest first-up result during the weekend’s Karapiro Club Regatta.

Following a year-long break since the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the 39-year-old finished fourth in the single sculls finals, more than nine seconds behind double sculls world champion John Storey.

Earlier in the day Drysdale placed third for his heat, 10 seconds behind Storey.

Drysdale was also beaten by training partners Jordan Parry and Cameron Crampton, clocking in at 7:23.28 in the 2000m Karapiro final.

The five-time world champion had immediately announced he would need to lose 7kg to gain speed, as he continues his comeback campaign that he hopes will win him his third Olympic gold medal.

“It was quite exciting going into the race with a bit of the unknown of how I would go after such a big break,” he said on Facebook.

“I loved being back competing.

“Overall I was very pleased with my progress.

Hubbard gets HRC backing to compete The Human Rights Commission has backed transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard to compete in the Commonwealth Games after critics said she had an unfair advantage.

The 39-year-old, formerly known as Gavin Hubbard, was confirmed as New Zealand’s first transgender Commonwealth representative and will compete in the World Championships tomorrow.

Since her selection was announced, Hubbard has been subject to criticism such as that from the Australian Weightlifting Federation chief executive Michael Keelan, who said she had an unfair advantage over her competitors.

Keeland claimed Hubbard had a mental advantage over other female weightlifters because she had previously competed as a man and knew she could lift heavier weights.

But the Human Rights Commission New Zealand (HRCNZ) said they backed Hubbard’s selection and said those questioning it were wrong.

Taine Polkinghorne, human rights advisor for sexual orientation, sex characteristics and gender identity said there is no valid reason to exclude Hubbard from competitive women’s sports.

Polkinghorne said Hubbard was selected on top performance and her background should be no factor.

“She is an incredible athlete, who has met the International Olympic Committee regulations related to acceptable testosterone levels that enable her to compete in sporting competitions.”

But Keelan insisted that Hubbard’s inclusion was unfair and said that Hubbard would still

have the advantage of hormones to lift heavier weights.

“We’re in a power sport which is normally related to masculine tendencies. If you’ve been a male and you’ve lifted certain weights and then you suddenly transition to a female, then psychologically you know you’ve lifted those weights before,” he said.

However, Hubbard’s testosterone levels were proven consistent with those athletes who were female at birth and she has met all the Commonwealth Games International Federation and New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) eligibility criteria.

Hubbard will compete in the women’s 90kg+ category, introduced by the International Weightlifting Federation at the start of the year.

The International Olympic Committee acknowledges athletes only as male or female with no transgender category.

Fellow weightlifting competitor Tracey Lambrechs also disagreed with Hubbard’s selection and reportedly lost 17kgs to fit the under 90kg category to avoid competing against Hubbard.

“I personally don’t think it’s very fair that Laurel has weight lifting history and was one of our top male lifters for a long time,” she said. “I think [transgender people] should be able to compete, but they shouldn’t be able to take spots from other female athletes,” Lambrechs told Radio New Zealand last week.

The NZOC stands by their decision and Chief executive Kereyn Smith said Hubbard would be strongly supported.

“As is the case with all athletes, particularly those heading to their first games, we will work with Laurel and the wider weightlifting team to make sure she has the environment and resources she needs to represent New Zealand with honour and pride at Gold Coast 2018.”

He may have just won a World Cup alongside him but Boyd Cordner’s dividends may have just gotten bigger after Cooper Cronk’s decision to quit representative football. Cronk dropped a bombshell after Australia’s World Cup triumph when he announced he would be retiring from the state and international arena. Cordner, who is the Roosters co-captain, said it would be music to the ears of coach Trent Robinson and the rest of the coaching staff. “It’s only going to be good news for the Roosters,” Cordner said.

Last-wicket stand crucial

The Mid Canterbury senior rep cricket side have learned just how valuable one wicket can be after falling to an eight wicket loss in their first Hawke Cup match of the season to South Canterbury over the weekend.

Mid Canterbury captain Matt Winter won the toss and elected to bat first, an area the side had shown improvements in during the build-up to the competition.

James Southby was a rock at the top of the order, putting on 44 runs, and despite the early departure of fellow opener Nick Gilbert, he was able to put on a 41 run partnership with Des Kruger.

It was the tied top score along-

side Jay Houston, who was able to combine with William Southby (34), for 70 runs for the eighth wicket partnership, with Mid Canterbury eventually finishing on 192 all out.

Mid Canterbury made a strong start to their first innings of bowling, with South Canterbury 37 for three after 16.6 overs.

They were able to recover however, and a strong fifth wicket partnership between Jacob Naylor and Matt Brown for 95 runs put the game back to neck and neck.

In the 69th over, Mid Canterbury looked to be heading back into the sheds to bat, with South Canterbury 203 for nine.

Instead, Mid Canterbury found themselves conceding more

than 100 runs as Dinesh deSilva and Craig Hinton combined for an impressive 10th wicket stand of 122 runs, with deSilva notching 103 not out off 98 balls, with South Canterbury declaring on 325 runs.

With less than two sessions to go in the game, Mid Canterbury came out swinging, with Nick Gilbert leading the charge with the bat, firing a quick first-wicket partnership with James Southby of 18 runs from 2.3 overs.

He then put on another 19 runs with Des Kruger, before South Canterbury’s Sam Carlaw delivered the decisive blow for South Canterbury. He took a hat-trick, first dismissing Bo Houston, followed one-by-one by Matt Tait and Ryan Cockburn.

Winter and Gilbert then ensured Mid Canterbury would not be handed an embarrassing innings defeat when they put on a partnership of 85 runs for the seventh wicket, with Gilbert top scoring in the end with 68 runs as Mid Canterbury reached 141 all out.

Only needing nine runs to secure the victory, South Canterbury did make life difficult for themselves, losing two wickets before eventually crossing the line at 13 for two, giving them the eight-wicket victory.

Mid Canterbury will now have the Christmas break to think about how they will approach the rest of the competition, with their next game not being played until January 20 and 21.

BJ Watling has capped off a disappointing fortnight in hilarious fashion after getting run out due to cramp in a Ford Trophy clash in Whangarei.

Things have not exactly gone to plan for the 32-year-old recently, as he was ommitted from the Black Caps squad to face the West Indies in a two-match test series due to ongoing concern regarding a hip injury.

The first test concluded yesterday at the Basin Reserve, with Watling’s replacement, Tom Blundell, going on to score 107 not out on debut as the Black Caps went on to win comprehensively by an innings and 67 runs with a day and a half remaining.

Looking to redeem himself and capture the attention of the national selectors, Watling scored a ton of his own for Northern Districts in their Ford Trophy clash against the Wellington Firebirds at Cobham Oval.

Sitting on 115 runs off 132 deliveries, Watling went in search of more runs to add to his impressive total.

It was at this point that disaster struck.

Trying desperately to reach the crease after sending the ball leg side, Watling’s hamstring cramped up, resulting in him tripping over his own right ankle.

As he was left stranded in the middle of the pitch, Wellington’s Hamish Marshall threw the ball at the wickets, sending Watling from the middle of the park.

Fortunately for Watling, his 115 runs was a significant contribution to Northern Dsitrcit’s five wicket victory, as Wellington’s total of 263 runs was chased down with just one ball to spare.

Watling’s Northern Districts are back in action in Whangarei tomorrow when they host the Central Stags in their second Ford Trophy match of the season, while the Black Caps’ second test against the West Indies begins on Saturday at Seddon Park in Hamilton.

Cook panned for ‘weak’ dismissal in Ashes By michael Ramsey Alastair Cook’s form struggles have continued with the England veteran throwing away a promising start in the pink-ball Ashes Test.

Cook looked well set on 37 on day three at Adelaide Oval before prodding at a Nathan Lyon delivery outside off stump which he nicked to Steve Smith at first slip.

It was another blow for the visitors who were 4-102 late in yes-

terday’s opening session in reply to Australia’s 8(dec)-442.

England’s leading test runscorer arrived in Adelaide under plenty of scrutiny after twin failures in Brisbane and few runs in the tour matches.

Cook’s two most recent centuries – 193 for county side Essex and 243 against the West Indies – both came in pink-ball cricket, and the tourists would’ve been hoping he would replicate those efforts.

The 35-year-old looked to be in good touch at the start of his innings, working the ball nicely off his pads in trademark style.

But his eventual dismissal to offspinner Lyon belied his dogged reputation, leaving his side in peril and Australian great Mark Waugh bemused in the Triple M commentary box.

“Cook would be disappointed because he played well.

“But that dismissal was a weak dismissal for a very good play-

er,” Waugh said. “It was a ball that did nothing.”

Former Australian spinner Kerry O’Keefe said Cook could expect to be targeted through the series by Lyon, who has feasted on left-handers all year.

“Nathan Lyon’s got 50 wickets against England ... there’ll be more if Cook keeps playing that shot,” O’Keefe said.

“He’ll have three slips and a gully to contend with in the Sydney test.”

Black Caps crush Windies

Wildcats stalk the Breakers

New Zealand marched to an easy victory in the first test against the West Indies at the Basin Reserve yesterday, completing the job shortly after lunch with a day and a half to spare.

The Windies, having started the day at 214 for two, 172 runs behind New Zealand, were dismissed for 319, 48 minutes after lunch handing the hosts an innings and 67-run victory.

They had lost a further three wickets by the interval but the last five wickets came in a freefall after lunch.

The first two fell in seven balls.

Sunil Ambris edged Colin de Grandhomme to first slip with the opening ball of the session.

Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich played an indescribably bad shot to give a gentle catch to backward point off Neil Wagner’s first ball of the next over.

Kemar Roach went lbw to de Grandhomme.

He sought a DRS referral immediately, which suggested he had hit the ball.

Replays, however, showed his bat was nowhere near the ball and it would have struck near the top of the stumps.

Captain Jason Holder skied a catch to mid wicket to give Wagner his best match figures.

Wagner finished with two for 102 which gave him a match haul of nine for 141, his best test analysis in his 33rd test.

The match is New Zealand’s 14th victory against the West Indies, against 13 defeats and 19 draws.

New Zealand bossed the game from the start, after sending the West Indies in on Friday and dismissing them for 134.

Centuries to Colin de Grandhomme, the second fastest by a New Zealander in tests, and debutant wicketkeeper Tom Blundell pushed New Zealand to 520 for nine.

The second test will begin at Hamilton’s Seddon Park on Saturday.

West Indies captain Jason Holder admitted his team had let themselves down with their first innings batting effort when they were rolled for 134.

“I didn’t think we helped ourselves the way we batted.

“We got better as the game went on and I felt we were going well in the second innings.

“But again there were some soft dismissals which didn’t help the cause.

“We’ve got to find ways to pick ourselves back up now. No excuses.’’

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson believed his team had produced a superb effort all round.

Neil Wagner had been the outstanding bowler in the first innings while Colin de Grandhomme, Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls all earned plaudits for their batting.

“And I thought Tom Blundell was outstanding,’’ he said of the debutant wicketkeeper who made a century.

“To come in for your first test against a very good attack and absorb some serious pressure, it was a great experience for Tom, a great 100 and one the team needed.’’

We’ll be back in Hamilton says Holder Don’t panic; things will be better in Hamilton.

West Indies captain Jason Holder is upbeat that his rallying call won’t fall on deaf ears as he looked ahead to the second test against New Zealand starting later this week, and with it a chance to square the two-test series.

But if New Zealand produce a similarly assertive performance as they did in clinching an innings and 67-run win at the Basin Reserve with a day and a half to spare, the tourists will need to take a giant step up in commitment and skill.

That’s not to say there were not some encouraging parts of the West Indies performance – determination with the ball, some fine batting in the second innings – but collectively they have much ground to make up in the next five days before Saturday’s toss at Seddon Park.

“We’ve done reasonably well in the year. There’s no need to panic.

“There’s only one test gone and we have a chance to put things right in the second test,’’ Holder said.

They were on the run from day one, sent in and skittled for 134.

From there it was an uphill push.

Yesterday, they started 172 behind with eight wickets standing, after some quality batting on Sunday afternoon from Kraigg Brath-

West Indian skipper Jason Holder waite and Shimron Hetmyer.

But once the stubborn Brathwaite went lbw to a smart piece of work from spinner Mitchell Santner, they lost eight for 88.

Or put another way five for 33 in eight overs after lunch.

Some of the shots were awful but the die had been cast long before that.

Kane Williamson was chuffed with his team’s display.

“It was a brilliant allround performance,’’ the New Zealand captain said.

“It was nice to bowl first, we put runs on the board to get a

long way ahead of the game and one of the most pleasing things was the way the guys adapted when it was tough to get wickets (in the second innings).’’

The second test squad will be named this morning, with the likelihood of Tim Southee returning after having this match off on paternity leave, while regular test keeper BJ Watling may return despite having not kept in Northern Districts’ last five games due to a hip niggle.

“We know the West Indies will be better. They’re a proud side,’’ Williamson said.

Certainly there are encouraging signs, particularly in their young crop of batsmen coming through.

But New Zealand have started their home season strongly.

Expect more in Hamilton where the West Indies have lost their only two tests, in 1999 and 2013.

“I won’t let this test put a dampener on my spirits in terms of the way we’ve played cricket in the last few months,’’ Holder said.

“It’s important we put this behind us quickly and learn from it.’’

By Justin ChadwiCk They’re the hottest team in the NBL right now, but the Perth Wildcats insist they are taking nothing for granted heading into Friday night’s clash with Adelaide at Perth Arena.

The Wildcats (8-3) sit in second spot on the table following three straight road wins – over Brisbane, Melbourne, and New Zealand.

NZ (9-3) are still on top of the table, but consecutive losses to the Wildcats and Bullets have left them looking a tad vulnerable.

Perth are attempting to win a third straight championship this season, and their spread of depth has left them well placed to achieve that feat.

Although Bryce Cotton and JP Tokoto are the star scoring acts, the likes of Damian Martin, Jesse Wagstaff, Lucas Walker, Angus Brandt, Jarrod Kenny, and Derek Cooke Jr. provide important depth.

Against the Breakers last week, Cotton was restricted to just seven points.

But Tokoto (25 points) and Wagstaff (19) stood tall to lift their side to a 89-73 victory on enemy territory – the club’s first triumph in NZ since 2013.

“It’s tough to win there,” Wagstaff said.

“But at the end of the day it only counts as one win.

“Two weeks ago, we lost to them twice in one week. So you’ve got to keep it in perspective.

“We’re a pretty deep squad. We don’t need guys to go out there and score 40 each night.

“It’s nice if they do. But we’ve got some pretty good depth.

“If three guys score 10 or more, it’s pretty tough to guard.”

Wagstaff was crucial against the Breakers, nailing four three pointers in the final term to help inspire the victory.

The 31-year-old downplayed his heroics, and said it was important for his team to continue their hot form against third-placed Adelaide (6-5) on Friday night.

Wagstaff was nursing a sore elbow at training on Monday, but said he’d be fine to take on the 36ers.

Lazarus camp happy

By Michael Guerin Kiwi pacing champion Lazarus has scored the barrier draw, trainer Mark Purdon wanted for Friday’s $1.1 million Inter Dominion Final in Perth – but with one slight complication.

Lazarus is set to start favourite for the annual trans-Tasman pacing grudge match after a track record heat win last Friday night and drawing exactly the marble Purdon wanted.

“I didn’t want barrier one or 10 (second line) or to be too wide so barrier two is perfect,” said Purdon.

But that is tempered by the fact hard-running rival Tiger Tara has drawn the ace and looks the likely leader, a position from where he downed Lazarus in their heat at Bunbury last Tuesday.

And stalking the pair will be local West Australian speedster Chicago Bull, who is the only horse drawn on the second line and looks set to follow Tiger Tara throughout.

This entire Inter Dominion series has been dominated by horses saving ground on the marker pegs, with eight of the nine heat winners leading and the other coming from three deep on the markers.

So not only does it look likely Lazarus will have to race in the running line and cover 10 lengths more than Tiger Tara but then hold off any late charge from Chicago Bull.

Eulogy Stakes next target for Dijon Bleu Group One performer Dijon Bleu will be sticking closer to home during the summer.

She is back in work with Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta following a brief break after her gallant effort to finish runner-up behind Hasahalo in the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton.

“She is quite a highly-strung filly, one of those that’s best doing a bit of work,” Latta said.

Dijon Bleu’s Guineas run followed victories in the Gr.3 Gold Trail Stakes (1400m) and at Listed level in the Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) and the O’Leary’s Fillies’ Classic (1200m).

“She’ll go to the Eulogy Stakes at Awapuni and then the Desert Gold Stakes,” Latta said.

Dijon Bleu also holds a nomination for the Gr.1 Grant Plumbing Levin Classic (1600m) at Trentham on January 13.

Meanwhile, stablemate Five To Midnight will be venturing further afield to follow a similar campaign to last season which culminated in a fifth placing in the Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m), the Ellerslie feature in March again his target.

The daughter of Darci Brahma finished runner-up behind Bonneval in last season’s Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks and she will get her chance to go one better at the top level in the Gr.1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie.

Sport Patriots on a roll New England Patriots have inched closer to securing the NFL’s AFC East after a 23-3 win over the Buffalo Bills extended their winning run to eight games. Running back Rex Burkhead scored a pair of touchdowns after Stephen Gostkowski’s three field goals had given New England the half-time lead. Tom Brady completed 21 of 30 passes for 258 yards, while improving to 27-3 over Buffalo and breaking Brett Favre’s NFL record for most wins by a quarterback against any one opponent. The 10-2 Patriots won their 14th successive road game, the second-longest streak in history.

Derby draws the crowds

While the demolition derby may have brought in the crowds, plenty of great racing was on show at the Ashburton Speedway Christmas meeting on Sunday.

“It was probably the best crowd we have had this year, and that is probably down to

the derby,” Speedway president Graham Ackroyd said.

“It was a very good day and a very successful day.

“The derby was very hard hitting; definitely a big attraction.

Ackroyd said between 50 and 60 cars were racing on the day, with plenty of entertaining racing happening for the crowd to enjoy.

“There was some really good racing with a few guys coming down from Ellesmere and they put on a good display so hopefully we will see them down again,” he said.

“We were a bit light on the ground in the title race on Sunday, but a lot of the cars had been racing in the Canterbury Championships on Saturday

and were totalled so that had quite an effect.”

Despite the scorching weather conditions, Ackroyd said thanks to the track manager, the track was in great condition for racing.

The next meeting at the club will be on February 11, with the South Island Production Title on the line.
