Identity theft leads to prison A 74-year-old Ashburton man who stole his brother’s identity to claim superannuation was jailed for four months yesterday. Julian Theo Crosby Giblin will be deported to Fiji following the jail term and there is no prospect of him repaying nearly $21,000 paid to him by the Ministry of Social Development. Giblin appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday for sentencing on three charges of deception and Judge

Joanna Maze said the short jail term was a merciful response to his circumstances. Giblin had been an overstayer in New Zealand since 2000 and used his brother’s identity to get a driver’s licence and passport. He used those documents to support an application for superannuation.
