Coldplay to headline Super Bowl Coldplay will reportedly headline the Super Bowl halftime show. The game is set for February 7 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The British rock band, which has just released a new album, will perform during halftime of Super Bowl, according to a person familiar with the production who asked for anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the matter.

Mean kiwi kills robins Our national icon has a rather nasty mean streak. Scientists have captured on camera a cold-hearted kiwi destroying a robin nest - and causing the death of chicks in it - and it all might have only been over a few borrowed feathers. Over two consecutive nights at Wellington sanctuary Zealandia, the little spotted kiwi was shown pushing the robin nest down a slope, pecking the chicks, and returning the next night to tear the nest apart. “That morning I went to band the nest of robin chicks, when I discovered the nest had been pulled out from its location and the chicks were dead,” said Dr Rachael Shaw, a postdoctoral research fellow in Victoria’s School of Biological Sciences. “I noticed the chicks had peck injuries on their bodies.” But it was only when Dr Shaw, who is studying the robin population at Zealandia, checked camera footage that she found the culprit. “I was shocked to find it was a kiwi. I was expecting a morepork or other bird to have destroyed the nest.” Although the kiwi didn’t directly kill the chicks, they had “pretty severe injuries”, she said. “The video shows that the chicks were still alive after being pecked by the kiwi and then fell out of the nest, most likely to their deaths.”

GunTV to sell ﬁrearms to US viewers Americans will soon be able to snap up the latest firearms from the comfort of their sofas with the launch in January of GunTV, a 24-hour shopping channel. It comes with gun violence in the US under renewed scrutiny after this week’s shooting in California left 14 dead, the latest in a long line of mass shootings in the country. The new channel is being launched by an organisation called Social Responsibility Network, which says it is addressing a need for “education, information and safety regarding firearms commerce in America”. The channel will also, it says, responsibly provide “extraordinary access to purchasing the most diverse representation of firearms in the world”. It will function like other home shopping channels, displaying merchandise that can be ordered by telephone or online. Buyers will need to fill out forms and go through required background checks at licensed dealers before taking the firearms home. One of the dealers signing on with the channel is Sports South, described as one of the oldest and largest gun sellers in the United States.

Top attitude Muskan Devta has an illness that partially paralysed the right side of her body. She felt lonely right through primary school because of a disability but this week took out a top award for her generosity to others. The Westlake Girls’ High School student, 16, won the supreme award at this year’s Attitude Awards for raising money for the Wilson Home, Starship Children’s Hospital and a breakfast programme for low-decile schools. She is now fundraising to build two classrooms at a school for blind children in India. In the first six years of her own schooling she felt painfully isolated because she was born with partial hemiplegia, a kind of cerebral palsy that partially paralysed the right side of her body.

Police presence to rise

Hosing restrictions tighten in outlying areas

Ashburton Police will have their numbers bolstered for the next two months in an effort to reduce crime. Operation Capricorn, an initiative involving Mid and North Canterbury and Christchurch city, will see Ashburton’s police numbers double every Wednesday to Saturday nights for all of December and January. Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said the focus would be on alcohol-related crime and drinkdriving.

Extra police from Christchurch would be sent to help cover problem areas including some on-licensed premises. There would also be patrol cars and undercover cars dotted around the district. The message that needed to be taken on board was that people should never worry about being stopped by police for drink-driving, they should be more worried about killing a friend or a member of the public, Senior Sergeant Banfield said. Police in Mid Canterbury

While the long-term road toll trend is tracking downwards, the current road toll is higher than at the same time last year. The previous two summers marked the two lowest ever recorded number of deaths for a December/January period since records began. From December 1, 2014 to January 31, 2015 there were 50 road deaths, compared to 42 road deaths the previous year. By comparison, the worst December-January road toll recorded in the last 25 years was 124 deaths in 1990.

About 40 children and adults attended pre-audition workshops this week for Oliver, a musical to be staged by Variety Theatre Ashburton next year. Vice-president Kim Vessey said directors were happy with the turnout, however, they were still interested to hear from people wanting to participate, particularly adult males. Auditions were to be held today, at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Anyone wishing to audition needed to register with Nicky Milmine, who could be contacted on 0275449524. Altogether a cast of about 50 is required, about half children and half adults. The main role of Oliver is to be filled by a boy, most likely eight to 14, while The Artful Dodger by an older boy. Hand-held hosing is now the only option for some Mid Canterbury residents as the district’s water consumption issues continue. The Ashburton District Council now has Mayfield and Mt Somers on level three water restrictions, which mean they can only water every second day between the hours of 6pm and midnight, and it must be carried out by hand. For Mayfield it means properties east of Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road can only water on even dates, and all other properties can water on odd dates. In Mt Somers it means properties on Pattons Road can water on even dates, and all other properties on odd dates. Level two restrictions are also now in force for Hakatere, Methven, Rakaia, Chertsey, Fairton and Hinds. Level two is time restricted hosing, with any hosing to be carried out between the hours of 6pm and midnight. The restrictions have been put into action immediately, and will remain in place until further notice, according to the council. Water restriction measures apply to the use of any use of water from a hose connected to a council water supply. Level three restrictions – in Mayfield and Mt Somers – mean irrigation systems, and washing vehicles, building exteriors and paved areas using hoses is not permitted at all. Despite Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay yesterday warning water restrictions could be in force for Ashburton township by this weekend, the latest restrictions update does not include Ashburton.

Mid Canterbury had its third driest November on record, Niwa’s monthly climate summary released this week shows. And more dry weather could be on the horizon, with Niwa’s seasonal outlook, also released this week, showing an equal chance of below normal or near normal rainfall. The climate summary shows 14 millimetres of rain fell at Winchmore, just 25 per cent of normal and the third lowest level since records began at the weather station in 1909. The month started cool but finished warm in many locations, and in Ashburton an unusually high daily minimum temperature was recorded on November 27. It was 17.9 degrees, the third highest daily minimum in November to be recorded at the station since records began in 1928. The dry conditions took their toll on the Ashburton River mouth, according to a longtime Ashburton fisherman. The man, who did not wish to be named, said he was concerned about abstraction from the river, which when combined with a dry season such as this year’s, caused the river’s mouth to close. The river mouth had

closed on November 19, but re-opened on November 28 after nor’west rain in the headwaters. He had visited the river mouth last weekend and watched sea-run trout swimming into the river. “It was the first time in my life I had seen it shut this early,” the fisherman said. Generally the river mouth did not close until late December to January. It was important the mouth stayed open so salmon could move up the river to spawn. “Others and myself have done a lot of work on enhancing the Ashburton River, including trying to revive the salmon population.” Niwa is forecasting a likelihood of below normal river flows for the next three months in eastern Canterbury. Soil moisture levels are likely to be near normal or below normal, rainfall near normal or below normal and temperatures near average. With El nino certain to continue over the next three months, there would be above normal pressure to the north of New Zealand and below normal pressure to the south of the country. “This circulation pattern is likely to be accompanied by anomalous westerly wind flows – a signature of El nino conditions,” Niwa said in a press release.

A 54-year-old man was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries after falling off a roof near Rakaia on Thursday. A St John spokesperson said two ambulances and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were sent to the scene at a Mitcham Road farm at 10.11am.

Exams finally over Mid Canterbury students threw down their pens after finishing their last exams yesterday. About 145,000 students from around the country sat NCEA Level 1-3 exams from November 6 to December 4. A team of nearly 2000 will spend the next few weeks marking each paper before Christmas and the results will be released online from mid-January.

Scouts to sing carols Scouts from all over Mid Canterbury will converge on East Street next weekend, belting out Christmas carols loud and proud. Scout zone leader Lori Rusbatch said this is set to be the Scouts last hoorah for 2015 and encouraged members of the public to come out and enjoy the festivities and even join in. The caroling will begin at 4pm on Wednesday December 9 by the water fountain on East Street.

Enter the watery world of Kaiwhekea Katiki at the Ashburton Art Gallery this summer. Sculpted from flax and seaweed, the seven-metre plesiosaur swims gracefully through the Carr Family Gallery, amidst a sea of poetic text. The exhibition, titled Matakaea, Shag Point, is the work of Christchurch-based multi-media artist Robyn Webster, staged in collaboration with writer and poet Bernadette Hall. Kaiwhekea Katiki, named for Katiki beach where she sunk to the seabed and died some 70 million years ago, is one of the most complete fossils ever found in New Zealand. She was

discovered at Shag Point in 2002, and is now housed in the Otago Museum. After extensive research Webster created the life-sized model of the dinosaur, incorporating toy vehicles and debris as a reflection of the impact of humans on the environment. Themes of extinction, obsolete objects and the renewal of the world are also evident in the installation. The exhibition is accompanied by a series of paintings depicting the history of Shag Point, which Hall describes in verse as a place often viewed in a blur from the seat of a vehicle. Matakaea, Shag Point will hang in the art gallery throughout the summer.

Fruit fly free New Zealand is now fruit fly free after a small number of the Queensland pests were found early this year in an Auckland suburb. The Auckland fruit fly operation had been a success and traps set in Grey Lynn found no signs of the insect yesterday, Ministry for Primary Industries director-general Martyn Dunne said. “We have not found any fruit flies in the affected area since March.” - NZME

Accused loses name suppression By kurT BayEr The man accused of murdering Christchurch toddler Ihaka Paora Braxton Stokes earlier this year can be named for the first time. Troy Kevin Taylor, a 22-year-old roofer and partner of the 15-month-old boy’s mother Mikala Stokes, lost interim name suppression on Thursday, a Ministry of Justice official confirmed. Taylor has pleaded not guilty to assaulting Ihaka on July 2 and murdering him on July 3 at their Truman Road home. After his arrest, a judge granted Taylor interim name suppression for just five days so that he could inform

his family. Defence counsel Phil Shamy later secured an extension. In August, the High Court refused to let interim name suppression continue. The decision was appealed to the Court of Appeal who also said it should lapse. Fresh suppression applications were made last month but they have now been withdrawn. Arguments in court over the suppression bids remain suppressed. Taylor is remanded on bail to an address outside of Christchurch and is subject to a 24-hour curfew. A bid to make the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade’s fire museum the best in the country has received a welcome boost. The fire museum was Mid Canterbury’s big winner in the latest round of donations handed out by the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury, receiving $25,000 to go towards its extensions. The fire museum’s history dates back 141 years and it houses an ever-expanding collection of fire memorabilia, so the extension will allow them to better house and display that memorabilia and vintage firefighting appliances. It’s the second hefty donation to go the way of the fire museum in the past few months, with the Ashburton Rotary Club donating $5000 in September, just a month after the extension project was launched. The Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury’s latest round of donations also included a $60,000 donation to Centrecare Counselling Waimate to go towards the purchase of a new premises, and $50,000 each to the Association of Pleasant Point Sports and The Aorangi

Road Shooting Range Trust, both for construction projects. The Ashburton Youth Café Charitable Trust received $7500 for operational costs, and the Ashburton Railway and Preservation Society (new sleepers), Ashburton Golf Club (new mower) and Ashburton Mackenzie Community Group (operational costs) each received a donation of $5000. The Hinds Playcentre also received $1000 towards operational costs. Other Mid Canterbury organisations, which are based in Timaru, to benefit included RNS Plunket Society Mid and South Canterbury ($10,000), Volunteering Mid-South Canterbury ($5000) and Sport Canterbury’s Mid and South Canterbury’s offices ($20,000). The Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury uses the returns from investments to fund its philanthropy. Over the past five years it has donated, on average, about $1 million each year to community organisations and their projects. The Community Trust supports organisations and projects which contribute towards achieving a region of healthy, vibrant and caring communities.

The event was held at the Ashburton Intermediate School with 23 groups of performers on Thursday night. Emily Hodzelmans, RicJaLe Heke, Tyler Manson and Katie Henderson, all six (above), put on a really strong performance.

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said the evening was an opportunity for members of the school community to get together and see the students’ talent. “What’s really good is the support the audience gives to them.” It was great to see the young ones trying their best and the older ones show off their honed skills, he said. Passionate about aged care By Caitlin Porter

Life in Ashburton may be a far cry from Auckland’s big-city life, but Vinea Fuimaono Vaatiuola is quickly settling into her new role at Cameron Courts. Only two weeks into her job as the rest home’s facility and clinical manager, Mrs Vaatiuola is loving her new-found small town life. “It’s heavenly with all the peace and quiet,” she said. Mrs Vaatiuola manages the day-to-day running of Cameron Courts but got her start in nursing. Moving from Western Samoa to Auckland in her 20s, she obtained her qualifications at Manukau Polytechnic before securing a job at Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland. Working there for six years, she decided to move to Melbourne in 1998 to further her study. She undertook and completed a Bachelor of Health Science which qualified her as an Australian registered nurse. Emergency nursing was where she got her start in Melbourne, working in a hospital emergency

department for six years before making the transition to aged care. “It was always a passion, working with the elderly, they have so much respect and you give it right back to them,” she said. Mrs Vaatiuola spent another nine years in Melbourne before she decided it was time to return to New Zealand, but not before enrolling in a Masters of Aged Care Management and Business. Her aged care work continued in Auckland but when the role at Cameron Courts came up Mrs Vaatiuola and her husband jumped at the chance to move south. Her long-term dream is to own and operate her own rest home, something she is slowly working towards. For now though, she is spending her time focusing on work and settling in to her new home. Unregistered dogs a concern Council set to revamp dog control policy but wants input By Sue newman

Nearly 400 dog bite incidents have occurred in Ashburton over the past five years, according to data released by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Figures show 75 claims for dog bite related injuries were made last year at a total of $13,287. This is up from the previous year where 69 claims were recorded at a cost of $12,033. A spokeswoman for ACC said most dog related injuries were minor and only required a visit to the GP. The most common injuries included lacerations and soft tissue injuries, she said.

There is almost one dog for every five people living in the Ashburton District. And while there are strict rules around the way in which the owners of those dogs control their pets, the Ashburton District Council is about to review its dog control policy and by-laws. When it does this, it wants the community’s help to make sure the rules it sets are ones that cover all dog related concerns. It is running a dog control survey and that’s an opportunity for people to let the council know whether the current policy and by-laws are correct or whether they could be changed and improved, said council environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle. “It’s important we know what’s on people’s minds, identify any issues or particular concerns and we can build this feedback into our report to council early next year,” he said. It was important to gather a wide range of views to identify where improvements could be made and that would ensure the new policy and by-laws reflected what the community wanted, Mr Catchpowle said. The council will be contacting owners of all registered dogs in the district encouraging them to take part in the survey and it will also hold focus groups for dog owners over the next few months. People wanting to take part in a focus group should contact council policy advisor Rachel Brown, he said. The dog control survey can be accessed on the council’s website at www.ashburtondc.govt.nz or a hard copy can be collected from the council’s reception. The survey closes on January 31 and everyone who participates will go in a draw to win a $50 Ashburton Trust voucher.

Incidents involving dog bites however, are going unreported to the Ashburton District Council. A new report, prepared by the council’s environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle shows last year only 51 dog bites were recorded. Mr Catchpowle said there were a number of reasons council were not made aware of the incidents, including the incident being resolved with the individual parties. Mr Catchpowle’s report also highlighted another area of concern – unregistered dogs. The report showed in September overdue statements were sent out for 986 un-

registered dogs, in October this dropped to 627. Final warning notices have now been sent out and infringement notices of $300 will follow if re-registration is not addressed by December 20. The number of dogs not controlled or confined within the Ashburton District also remains a concern, the report said. Currently there are 6855 dogs registered in Ashburton, 21 of which have infringed by not being controlled. Menacing dogs within the Ashburton area are also on the increase, with 45 dogs currently registered as menacing, up from 16 the previous year.

Soldiers sacked after taking psychedelic drug Five soldiers have lost their jobs after taking a psychedelic drug, N-Bomb. The soldiers from Linton Military Camp took the drug over Labour Weekend in October and were hospitalised. They were part of a group of eight caught acting strangely in Palmerston North. Out of the three remaining soldiers involved, two have elected to be tried by court martial and one has been referred for court martial. In a separate incident this week, a soldier was sentenced to 28 days in the Services Corrective Establishment in Burnham after being found guilty of four

that the actions of a few must not undermine the professionalism and pride of the majority.” General Kelly said he wanted to reassure the New Zealand public that he had sent a message to his soldiers to ensure they understood illegal drugs had no place in the NZDF and that there would be consequences if they ignored that message. He said the New Zealand public had “every right to expect its military to uphold the highest level of standards of behaviour and is saddened that a few people marred the efforts of the majority”. He added: “We are a military force charged with maintaining

the security and freedom of New Zealanders and those countries we work alongside and we must be at the top of our game. “I have sent a message to every soldier in the New Zealand Army outlining my high expectations and the consequences should they choose to not heed that message. “If any soldier is caught taking illegal drugs or having illegal drugs in their possession, they will be dealt with to the full extent of the NZDF’s ability.” NZDF personnel undergo random drug testing as well as testing at various levels of their career. - NZME

Stink lily puts on grand show By SuSan SandyS

Lilies are generally known for their beauty, but the stink lily is renowned for its offensive odour. Rare in New Zealand, Dracunculus vulgaris has been flowering just once every seven years in the Methven garden of Jim Hare. The 87-year-old and his late wife Joan bought the plant from an Ashburton nursery about 16 years ago, and planted it outside their bedroom window. “And we couldn’t open the windows because of the stink, it’s like a dead horse,” Mr Hare said. After that first flowering, the couple moved the plant to the front of the house, where they could admire its beauty, but not have to worry about its smell. They could, however, still smell its flowers outside and neighbours could also smell them. The plant is currently treating Mr Hare to a bountiful showing, with six of its large deep purple flowers appearing. Mr Hare’s plant has a number of stalks, which do not all flower at

the same time. He generally only gets one lily flower in any given year, and the plant last flowered about two years ago. With their individual approximate sevenyear cycle, this was the first time he had had so many lilies flowering altogether, six of them. However, this time they were missing their strong smell, one characteristic of the beautiful plants Mr Hare was happy to go without. “I don’t think it’s going to get the odour this year because of the nor’westers collapsing the stamens,” Mr Hare said. It was the pollen which appeared on the stamens which emitted the odour, he said. The lily is a native of the Balkans and is also known as the voodoo lily or dragon lily. Ashburton Borough School’s request for parking restrictions around the school boundary on Short and Park streets has reached the next stage of progression through the Ashburton District Council. The school sent a formal request to council on November 25 following safety concerns during pick up and drop off times due to people parking outside the school all day. Ashburton District Council urban contracts engineer Hernando Marilla said the request was discussed at a service delivery meeting on Thursday and he was instructed to raise the subject with the regulatory services team to check what would need to be done to impose a restriction. He would then have to go back to the school for it to decide on a restriction length before it could be presented to council at a meeting early next year, he said. Mr Marilla hoped to be able to talk with the school before the end of term so they could get the ball rolling quickly next year.

Problem ‘hard to detect’ Harmful drinking among the elderly can mimic health disorders such as dementia, says an alcohol dependence expert. Clinical nurse specialist Chris Sinclair works with a programme helping to combat alcohol abuse among the elderly and said in her experience, it can be hard to detect. Sixty Five Alive is a Christchurch based programme established in 2014 by Odyssey House. Ms Sinclair said drinking problems with people aged over 65 often weren’t picked up or were overlooked, because the right questions were not always asked. Often people also had multiple medical problems and the drinking added to negative effects. “Quite often in this age group as well there is an underlying psychiatric problem there, quite often they are depressed or anxious and they can be abusing other substances as well like their

Referrals to Sixty Five Alive can come from rest homes, hospitals or health professionals and are common if people suffered from alcohol related injuries, such as falls. “Quite often if they were not asked if they were drunk at the time of the fall they won’t say or they minimise what they were drinking,” Ms Sinclair said. “There’s a lot of shame, embarrassment and guilt.” People have to feel comfortable before they will talk about their alcohol consumption, she said. Ms Sinclair and her co-worker,

Shirley McKinney work with people in a variety of different situations to either decrease, or stop their drinking. “You are best to work slowly and gently with them around seeing the benefits of cutting back or stopping,” Ms Sinclair said. Working with clients from all over Canterbury, Ms Sinclair said harmful drinking appeared to be more prevalent in isolated rural areas, such as Mid Canterbury. As a result Ms Sinclair said the support of family and friends was very important. Often family did not want to interfere or saw it as taking away

their last pleasure but Ms Sinclair said this was not the right attitude to have. “The issues are that when you’ve got a significantly welldeveloped alcohol problem the quality of their life diminishes significantly and they are not happy.” Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (ACADS) general manager Chris Clark said while her service saw people that were over 65 years old, she did not perceive harmful drinking among the elderly as a “significant problem” in Ashburton. Ms Clark said the service had people come to them who either self-referred or were referred by friends and family but argued it was no to different to young people or middle aged people who had problems with alcohol. “Addiction is addiction, you can end up with alcohol problems no matter what age you are.”

The police inquiry into the gunbuying sting at TV3’s Story show has now seen three search warrants executed, including the one used to search the home of cohost Heather du Plessis-Allan. One of those was at TV3’s Auckland offices and was carried out with advance warning, with detectives arranging to collect material set out in the search warrant. One of the other warrants was served in Wellington, as was the one which saw officers access Du Plessis-Allan’s home. A spokeswoman said: “We have obtained several items which we had been seeking in order to conduct a full and thorough investigation.” Search warrants against media organisations are unusual events and require police to use them only after making special checks. - NZME

Arrest warning for Kiwis abroad Kiwis abroad have been warned that they may be arrested when they come home for Christmas if they have defaulted on their student loan. In a statement IRD said a group of Australian-based Kiwis were on the NZ Customs Service alert list, meaning Inland Revenue would be notified on their arrival in the country. However, it said the arrest warrants were in place “for only the most serious offenders”.

Inland Revenue Collections Manager Stuart Duff says those in serious default may not be able to leave New Zealand until they have a repayment scheme in place. “Inland Revenue is urging Kiwis living overseas with unpaid student loan debt to get in contact with us to set up a repayment plan, particularly those thinking about heading home for Christmas.” He said it was time borrowers

in default met their obligations. Along with being able to arrest borrowers in default at the border, a new bill introduced in November allowed greater sharing of information between Inland Revenue and the Australian Tax Office. This meant an increased number of Kiwis with unpaid student loans in Australia could be identified and gave officials in New Zealand access to up-to-date contact details.

IRD also planned to get in touch with those nominated as points of contact by borrowers while they are overseas. It’s part of the Government’s strategy to hunt down student loan borrowers living overseas and get them to pay up. Those with a student loan living overseas are required to make two repayments each year towards student loan debt, in the form of two lump sum payments or regular payments through-

out the year. The Student Loan Amendment Act 2014 set higher repayment thresholds for Kiwis with student loans living overseas to encourage loans to be paid off sooner. The law also has tougher measures to deal with borrowers who persistently refuse to make repayments. Overseas-based borrowers are responsible for $840 million in overdue debt - the majority of whom live in New Zealand. - NZME

A man who died after the truck he was in went over the edge of a wharf was a well-known and loved person in his local community. Morrell Mark McKenzie, 51, was the sole occupant of a truck which went over the edge of Bluff Wharf about 1.30pm on Thursday. Two commercial divers from Bluff firm Osborn Engineering were in the water nearby when the incident happened. The divers swam over to the truck where they found Mr McKenzie trapped inside the submerged vehicle. Mr McKenzie died at the scene. Osborn Engineering managing director Grey Russell, who was one of the divers at the scene, said Mr McKenzie was “a great Bluff guy” who would be sadly missed. Mr McKenzie was the managing director of the McKenzie Marine & Mackraft company in Bluff. “He was well-known because of the jetboating,” Mr Russell said. “I knew him very well. “A lot of people’s thoughts – in

Bluff and in the jetboating community – will be with his family. He’ll be sadly missed.” Mr Russell would not comment on his involvement at the scene. Local coastguard also assisted but declined to comment, saying it was a police matter. Bluff Community Board chairman Raymond Fife said Mr McKenzie was a well-respected, well-liked local businessman. “It’s a sad day for Bluff,” he said. “He was born and raised in Bluff. He’s lived in Bluff his whole life. “He was involved in the community and his family is wellknown. The thoughts of the community are with the family.” South Port chief executive Mark O’Connor said the company was “deeply saddened” by the incident and extended its condolences to his family and friends. His death would “hit the township very hard”, Mr O’Connor said. The port would be working closely alongside the authorities investigating the incident, he said. A new addition to Ashburton’s Museum is an interactive display that charts the history of irrigation in the Ashburton District. It tells the story of wealth that comes with water. It’s a story that has its beginnings in 1881, but one that will stretch into the future. Reporter Sue Newman takes a look at the display and the people on whose dreams our district has grown rich.

Banking on water to grow

hink irrigation and the first thing that comes to mind is likely to be giant irrigators spraying water on paddocks. Think irrigation and it’s easy to imagine that it’s a modern day invention. Irrigation, however, has been around as long as man has tilled the soil. More than 2000 years ago engineers in Petra, Jordan created a water supply and distribution system that used management techniques to balance reservoir storage capacity with continuous flow pipelines to ensure a constant supply of water year-round. And they weren’t the first. The only thing that has changed over the centuries is the mechanisation and latterly the computerisation of irrigation equipment. What hasn’t changed is the simple premise that water brings life to parched ground and that its wise use means any surplus must be stored today to be used tomorrow. And the Ashburton District is a living example of how irrigation has changed a landscape, from arid and barely productive to a level where our land is capable of producing food that feeds the world. The story of irrigation is the story of the Ashburton District, from the efforts of early pioneers in 1881 who opened a channel at Pudding Hill to allow water to flow along stockwater channels through to massive water storage projects that are progressively greening the plains. Since then the drive to provide more water for more land has been relentless. Along the way there have been modern day pioneers who have dreamed big and who have broken new ground in the march to achieve better water storage, more efficient irrigation systems and ultimately more highly productive land. Those pioneers and the history of irrigation in the Ashburton District, from 1881 to the present day, have been brought to life in a new interactive display in the Ashburton Museum. It’s a story of big dreams, big achievements and ultimately big success stories that could so easily have been disasters. The Pudding Hill stockwater project was launched in January 1881 and by the following year more than 400 miles of water races were flowing across the district. With the stockwater network flowing, the district’s irrigation pioneers turned their thoughts to opening a channel from the Rangitata River on one side of the plains and from the Rakaia River Redcliffs on the other to create a flow of water that could irrigate the upper plains. One of those ideas became the massive

Rangitata Diversion Race that took water from the Rangitata River at Klondyke and moved it across the plains to the Rakaia River, along the way taking water down border dyke channels to around 29,000 hectares of land. The race was built between 1937 and 1944. The Redcliffs project was reborn a century later as today’s Barrhill Chertsey scheme. Between then and today two power generation plants have been built, at Highbank and Montalto, experimental irrigation farms were established at Elgin in 1887, Seafield in the 1930s and Winchmore in 1949. The men who dreamed of irrigating the plains refused to give up, each generation was replaced by another more determined and with better knowledge to achieve that goal. And along the way irrigation schemes were born and more land came under irrigation, deep bores were drilled, storage ponds were constructed. Manual was replaced with mechanisation, with computerisation. Change and progress were relentless. The names of many of the early irrigation pioneers have been lost in time, but in the museum’s display the words of six men who made a significant difference in the march of irrigation across the Ashburton District are recorded – Eric Drewitt, Dave Bissett, Brian Cameron, Bob Englebrecht, John Wright and Phil McKendry. Each in his own way made a significant contribution to progress the irrigation dream. The Grown from Water display also provides some telling statistics of life in our district, with and without irrigation. It is very clear that without water the Ashburton District would be an arid place. Its arable industry would virtually cease; it would be a place of few people. Estimates are that without irrigation our population that tops 33,000 today would struggle to support 7000. Our income would be mainly from sheep, with land generating between $600 and $800 a hectare compared to between $3000 and $4000 from the arable industry and $10,000 to $12,000 from dairying under irrigation. Land use has become much more intensive; 50 years ago, without water a farmer needed 1200 acres to eke out a living; today 600 of irrigated, intensively farmed land provides a living for farmers, their families and farm staff. Without irrigation Ashburton would be a small servicing town, reliant on the vagaries of the weather. Today, every dollar earned on the land is spent five times or more before it leaves the district. Without irrigation there would be less, much less money to go round.

Running . . . for his life An unexpected phone call sparked the weight loss journey of a lifetime for Pete Salvesen. This week he talked to the Guardian’s Caitlin Porter about his 60 kilogram feat.

triving towards a healthier lifestyle has seen former Ashburton man Pete Salvesen shed nearly 60 kilograms in just under nine months. Sparked by an unexpected phone call, the trip of a lifetime and some cajoling from a close friend, 28-year-old Pete’s journey has seen him become happier, healthier and more positive than ever. The call, from Ronald McDonald House in Christchurch, was to tell Pete, now a Christchurch tram driver, that he was to take a young cancer patient on a tour of the central city. The connection formed through that chance meeting set Pete on a course that would see him undertake fitness feats he never thought possible, including last weekend’s Summer Starter 10 kilometre run. Moving to Mid Canterbury

from the UK when he was 15, Pete finished off his secondary schooling at Mt Hutt College and said while he enjoyed sport, he was always a “heavy lad”. However he has dropped that title alongside the weight and now spends his time working out and putting his fitness to the test. A few months ago Pete decided to enter his first organised run and it was then he knew he had to do it in part for Ronald McDonald House. A “big hurdle” to get over, Pete completed the 10 kilometres in just under 58 minutes and was privileged to run alongside Ronald McDonald House South Island’s chief executive while doing so. The icing on the cake – raising over $3000 for the charity. “My main focus was doing well for them and for me as well,” he said.

His weight loss journey officially began earlier this year when a close friend introduced Pete to a Christchurch-based personal trainer, Sharon. “She’s the most amazing person who has basically changed my life,” Pete said. After meeting up with her in March, Pete decided it was time to bite the bullet and shed some weight. “I eat, breathe and sleep training and my work on the trams, so the balance is really good,” he said. Weight training began shortly after their first meeting and in recent months Pete has moved towards improving his fitness and changing the appearance of his body. He trains at least three times a week, often four and has lost just over 55 kilograms. He won’t divulge his starting

weight, but said his goal was to get into double digits on the scales. “It’s quite a big difference and that is why my trainer Sharon really has changed my life and the way I think about myself now, my body and my fitness.” Pete said he is not treating his change in lifestyle as a quick fix, more a gradual process. “It’s just starting to dawn on me how far we have come … it’s a wonderful journey,” he said. Not only does he feel better physically, but mentally too. He intends to maintain his weight and work towards becoming leaner and stronger. More sporting events are on the cards too, and Pete is looking at entering the City to Surf next year and eventually taking on a half marathon. “I’m not getting too carried away at the moment, just enjoy-

ing where we are at, keeping level-headed,” he said. While the chance phone call and coaxing from his friend played a large part in his lifestyle change, so did a trip to Africa. Last year, after finishing up work in Lake Tekapo’s tourism sector, Pete decided to pack his bags and head to the other side of the world. He spent four and a half months traversing eight countries between South Africa and Kenya. Upon his return he said his mind felt clear and he was ready for new challenges. “It’s all sort of fallen into place very, very nicely,” he said. Now, Pete plans to keep striving towards his fitness goals and said he is excited to see where life takes him. “I just want to get stuck into everything. “The sky is the limit.”

A love of netball A

Mid Canterbury netball stalwart is bidding farewell to the board she has served for the past 16 years. A player, selector, coach and manager, Rosemary Adlam has been involved with netball for nearly 40 years, but has decided to step down from the Mid Canterbury Netball management board. The earliest record of Adlam’s involvement with local netball was back in 1979 when she helped her mother Elise and Aunt Jean in the canteen. While administration may be her forte, Adlam is no stranger to playing the game. She began playing netball as a student at St Joseph’s School before progressing to the Celtic club. Representative netball is also in her repertoire – she played age group netball until a knee injury caused her to rethink her involvement with her beloved sport. It was then she decided to move towards coaching and management. Adlam coached primary school netballers but was also a Celtic coach for various grades right through to Premier. “When you love a sport you stay involved,” she said. Natural progression saw Adlam complete a short stint for the old Ashburton Netball Association before joining the Mid Canterbury Netball board shortly after it moved from being a committee. She has remained on the board ever since and in 2005 took over as president. In 2010 Adlam was inducted as a life member of Mid Canterbury netball and stayed on as president for three more years before Karla Newlands took over in 2013. She said while it could be a lot of work at times it was a role she enjoyed. “When you work with good people it makes it a lot easier,” she said. Throughout her netball career Adlam has won a number of awards including the Elsie Adlam Award for Administrative Excellence and has also been a delegate for Canterbury Netball and the Netball New Zealand Council. For the past few years Adlam has taken over the role of competition convener and ensures the Mid Canterbury netball season runs smoothly. Not quite ready to entirely step away from the sport yet, she will stay in this role for the 2016 season. Throughout the years Adlam has been on her fair share of committees from the pavilion, finance and draw to the coaching committee. Now though, she said it was time to give others a chance. “It’s a really good thing to be

Proud of how her chosen sport has progressed in New Zealand, Adlam said she is not disappearing for good and will tag along to watch games next year whenever she has a chance.

Next year’s netball calendar is signed and sealed. The dates for Mid Canterbury Netball’s (MCN) 2016 season were confirmed at an annual general meeting earlier this week. MCN president Karla Newlands confirmed the season will begin on Saturday, April 2 with the first round of senior netball before social and premier netball commence the following week on April 6 and 7 respectively. Future Ferns netball is the last grade to start, beginning the week of May 2. The netball season will end on August 18 with the premier netball final. At the AGM a board reshuffle was also announced. Rosemary Adlam, Jan Whitehead and Clare Corbett stepped down from the MCN management board, while Laura George from the Tinwald South Netball Club came on board. Newlands was re-elected for her second term as president and remains on the board with Jason Rickard, Sally Williams and Helen Hartnett. One spot is still vacant however and Newlands said anyone interested in taking part in the running of MCN should contact her. Two long service awards were also presented at the meeting. Natalie Bateman received one for her service to netball in Mid Canterbury and her service to coaching. Well known for her coaching abilities Bateman has coached and selected various representative teams. Newlands also received an award. She began playing for United in 1986 and since then has been a player, coach, committee member, secretary and president of the club. She has also been on various committees and was also a representative coach and selector. Newlands said the meeting was an all-round success with a record number of clubs turning out. The meeting was the last held at the pavilion on Middle Road as MCN has received confirmation of their licence to occupy the new EA Networks Centre. As MCN own the pavilion Newlands said the next step was to work out what would happen to it.

Spin-offs from deal The Warriors financial future looks bright and New Zealand rugby league is set to benefit after the NRL signed off on a historic funding agreement that will help strengthen the game at every level. Tough training pays off Matthew Clough will relish the opportunity of pitting his endurance against the punishing heat of Cozumel, Mexico, at the World Aquathlon Championships in September next year. Clough qualified for the world champs after winning the under 18 men’s section with a superb performance to post a time of 30:59 at the Jennian Homes New Zealand Aquathlon Championships at Pilot Bay, Mount Maunganui last Saturday. The Ashburton College student, who stepped up to the under 18 section this year, was the youngest competitor in his category,

and placed third overall in the open grade. “I didn’t realise I’d won it because I was in the open race. “There were two guys that crossed the line in front of me and one looked pretty young so I wasn’t sure, but when I found out I’d won I was stoked,” he said. Clough has also competed in triathlons, and is dedicated to a punishing training schedule to hone his skills in each discipline. “For the week before (a race) I taper it off a bit, but for the three months beforehand it is quite intense training,” he said. “Throughout the course of a

normal week I will train 10 times. “I swim Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings and I run Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and bike Wednesdays and Sundays.” Clough, who won national agegroup titles as a swimmer, now passes on his knowledge to other budding athletes as a Learn to Swim tutor, having swum competitively for as long as he can remember. The 15-year-old branched out from swimming to multisport events for more of a challenge, and now is in good stead of achieving his goal of one day

representing New Zealand at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games. “It’s challenging, that’s why I enjoy it. “It changes throughout the race. “You could be out of the water in tenth, you could be first in the transition off the bike and end up fifteenth,” he said. For now, Clough will be concentrating on his upcoming events, and continue to progress, but if his recent performances are anything to go by, not many would bet against the youngster one day donning the black of New Zealand at senior level.

Methven currently hold a narrow twopoint lead over Tinwald on the ladder, followed by Fairton in third and Hampstead, Allenton and Southern make up the lower half of the points table. Last weekend’s fixtures produced wins for Methven, Tinwald and Hampstead, but the victories came in contrasting fashion. The table toppers narrowly downed Allenton 7-6 and Tinwald were awarded the points against Southern by default due to a lack of personnel, while Hampstead produced a nail-biter of their own for tightly contested 7-6 win over Fairton. Methven will be favourites against Fairton, but the underdogs will be gunning for an upset and look to bounce back in style after suffering their first loss of the campaign last weekend. Thinking before speaking can be a good idea I s’nt it odd what people come out with, some things perhaps when they’re not thinking to clearly. Nigel Llong takes the top award this week, with his “That mark on the bat could have been made by anything” remark, which was met with a healthy dose of disbelief by everyone else on the entire planet. If he’d thought a bit more about it, perhaps a pretty pink cricket ball may have come to mind, but it didn’t, and the balance of an important test match swung dramatically. In fact it hasn’t been a happy time at all for Llong; a couple of weeks ago he gave a full-flight Brendon McCullum out on 80 when the ball clearly hit pad only, and in Perth he gave Usman Khawaja not out on 38 when replays showed a very clear edge. Khawaja went on to score 121. McCullum stoically remains anchored to the party line, “We have no complaints” - it would

It’s possibly a little known fact that Coubertin himself scored gold at his own tournament - but in what field? Literature, actually; poetry to be exact. Yes, the revitalised Games included some events which may have raised quite a few eyebrows today, such as golf and rugby, but also there were the old favourites like ballooning, target shooting with live pigeons, motorcycle racing, croquet, tug-of-war, or for those more all-round sportspersons, a gold medal won in painting or sculture would have been nice to hang on the mantelpiece. So be careful what you say you’re wishing for, it might not be quite what you expect.

Ashburton College’s 1st XI will be in action against North West for day two of two in Christchurch today. The action came to a close on day one last Saturday with North West trailing by nine runs with nine wickets remaining. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, the home side’s openers Nicholas Gunby and Jamal Al -Sukhon were restricted by some tight bowling from College’s Sam Hall and Josh Buchanan. Skipper Kieran Hunt contributed with two quick wickets to leave North West in trouble on 849, but it wasn’t until 46 more runs were posted before Josh Buchanan finally managed to break the defence of tail ender Joshua Chaney. In reply, Kieran Hunt could only muster five before being dismissed by a good in-swinging delivery and began a College collapse. Michael Burton reached 58 before being dismissed leaving College at 105-8. Hall and Josh Gill took the attack to the bowlers to gain a first innings lead, and the visitors then had 11 overs left in the day to make inroads into North West’s second innings. Gareth Hunt had the opener cheaply but at the end of play, North West were still nine runs in arrears. Play will begin at 10.30am today with College gunning for some early wickets.

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis backs Mohammad Amir’s return to international cricket after serving a five-year suspension for spot-fixing. Amir was allowed last January to play domestic cricket, and has been free since September, when his international ban ended, to play anywhere. “He [Amir] has served his punishment and he deserves to come back in the [cricketing] community and enhance his profession,” Younis said yesterday. Amir deliberately bowled two noballs in a test against England at Lord’s in 2010. - AFP

Pattinson primed After a false start in Adelaide, Victorian paceman James Pattinson is desperate to resume his Test career when Australia take on the West Indies in Hobart next week. Pattinson’s career stalled for nearly two years as he battled back and hamstring injuries but he edged closer to a return when he was added to the Australian squad ahead of the third Test against New Zealand. The 25-year-old was 12th man in Adelaide but the foot injury to fellow quick Mitchell Starc has opened the door for him to reclaim a spot in Australia’s attack. - AAP

Taylor, Williamson chasing a magical mark Can Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor break the half century barrier against Sri Lanka? Cricket constantly uses benchmarks to compare eras. A batting average exceeding 50 is one generic guide to differentiating the best from the merely world-class. Matthew Hayden, Sir Vivian Richards, Allan Border and Denis Compton sneak into the ‘50’ bracket. That means they will always be viewed in a slightly rosier hue than those in the ‘49’ club such as Mahela Jayawardene, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Virender Sehwag and Michael Clarke. Keeping pace on the batting average treadmill is a tough ask. Williamson averages 48.36 after 44 tests, dipping from his 49.26 peak in Perth last month after making 166 and then 32 not out. If he is dismissed four times in the two-test series against Sri Lanka, but scores 323 runs at 80.75 he will become the first New Zealand player to reach the mark beyond 32 tests. Glenn Turner dipped to 48.65 after his 33rd test and ended up averaging 44.64 in 41. At 25 years and 118 days old, Williamson consistently bats like he’s a live geometry experiment.

Coach backs Amir

Most shots appear measured and weighted to fit within the confines of an oval with the least number of hands or feet getting near them. He finds the path of least resistance on attack and path of most resistance on defence. It seems inevitable he will break the hallowed 50 mark. By the time Williamson turns 26, his 12 century tally will inevitably be closer aligned to Sachin Tendulkar (19), Sir Donald Bradman and Alastair Cook (15) and Sir Garfield Sobers (13) at the same age. Ross Taylor is less likely to reach a 50 average this month, but he’s still a possibility coming off a record innings of 290 for test players touring Australia. He averages 46.61 in 67 tests and needs 576 runs at 144 in four completed innings against Sri Lanka to break the barrier. Williamson might have the edge, so to speak, when it comes to technical finesse, but Taylor counters with a bat which is the equivalent of a bank vault door when his eye is in. The pair have long been trumpeted as New Zealand’s best test 3-4 combination and the series in Australia further compounded that hypothesis, particularly at Perth.

Their third-wicket stand of 265 was the highest by any New Zealand pair against the Australians. In 44 partnerships together, they average 58.15. That figure rises to 61.68 when it is for the third wicket. Comparing their averages with others at their career peaks makes for curious - and some might argue skewed - reading. New Zealand’s highest average for those to have played more than 10 tests is John F Reid, who peaked at 58.50 after 12. Turner, Andrew Jones, Mark Richardson, Jesse Ryder and Bert Sutcliffe had sustained periods averaging more than 50 before dropping later in their careers. In contrast, Martin Crowe never got there at all, having endured the fury of a top line Australian attack on debut in 1982. Stephen Fleming averaged 54 after his first test but never returned to those levels. The quest for 50 adds further interest for a New Zealand public who are yet to see their national side play a test at home since they were World Cup finalists earlier this year. At least four suspected bookmakers have been thrown out of cricket stadiums during the ongoing scandal-tainted Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), in efforts to ensure the tournament is graft free. BPL secretary Ismail Haider Mallick yesterday said anti-corruption officials had spotted the four whom they suspected of placing bets on behalf of clients during Twenty20 league matches, which is illegal in Bangladesh. - AFP

Windies fight back The West Indies have reversed their form but not their fortunes in their four-day match against a Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane. CA XI have ridden their luck against a fired up Windies attack to move to 7-368 - an overall lead of 125. The fire and brimstone approach expected from the fast bowling Windies arsenal finally emerged yafter the CA XI resumed at 4-245. The lightning quick Kemar Roach (1-78) and even faster Shannon Gabriel (1-85) kept the second string CA XI on their toes literally with fearsome pace. - AAP

Parish secures feature ride A brief return to New Zealand has produced an unexpected bonus for expatriate Kiwi jockey Cory Parish. He has been booked for three rides at Ellerslie today, including the mount on Trepidation in the Gr.3 Stella Artois Concorde Handicap. “I came back to drop my daughter off to my parents for Christmas and it’s been great to pick up a few rides through Mark Claydon, who has done a good job at short notice,” Parish said. “I arrived on Wednesday and I’ll be going back next Thursday and probably ride over there again on Friday.” Parish, who has 136 New Zealand winners to his credit, has been based in Victoria since 2012. “I love it over there, but I had a bit of bad luck and I’ve only been back riding for a couple of months,” he said.

“I had a fall at Swan Hall and suffered two small fractures in my spine. That was at the end of July when everybody else was starting to get ready for the Melbourne carnival.” Parish, 26, said the Chris McNabtrained Trepidation would be a leading chance on her best form. “She was unlucky in the Railway when Noel (Harris) was riding her and, while I haven’t had any instructions yet, she seems to get back so the smaller field will suit her.” Fourth in Ellerslie’s premier sprint before a third placing in the Telegraph earlier this year, Trepidation has been out twice this preparation and she looks well-placed on the minimum today. Parish has also been booked for the Tim Carter-trained pair of Danica (race three) and Sky Idea (race four).

Spell for Tiger Talented filly Dontpokethetiger will wrap up her current campaign at Trentham today. She will shoot for the third black type credit of her fledgling career in the Vision Enhancement-Audio Visual Specialists Wakefield Challenge Stakes. Trainer Peter Rudkin said the Wakefield had always been the main aim for Dontpokethetiger and win, lose or draw she would go for a break after the weekend. - NZME

Parker at prohibitive odds Expectations are high for unbeaten Kiwi heavyweight Joseph Parker to deliver a clinical performance in his Fight for Life match-up with American Daniel Martz in Hamilton tonight. New world champion Tyson Fury’s stunning upset win over former champion Wladimir Klitschko last Sunday has given the heavyweight division a much-needed shot of adrenaline, and brought increased scrutiny upon Parker as one of the world’s leading title challengers. Since defeating Kali Meehan with a third round TKO in Auckland in October, the normally humble and modest 23-year-old South Aucklander has spoken confidently about his title hopes and ambitions. Earlier this week Parker stated he was capable of taking on any heavyweight in the world, and anything less than a resounding victory over Martz would severely diminish those claims and set him back in the eyes of an increasingly growing and captivated public audience. The pair faced off at yesterday’s weigh-in at Claudelands Arena with the 1.93m Parker clocking in at 107.6kg and the 2.03m Martz registering 113.1kg. Much has been said out of Parker’s camp about needing to expose him to bigger fighters, with Martz - nicknamed ‘The Mountain’ - the tallest he has faced in his 16 fight career (14 knockouts). In touch with extremists California gunman Syed Rizwan Farook had been in contact with known Islamic extremists on social media, a US intelligence official said yesterday, and police said he and his wife had enough bullets and bombs to slaughter hundreds when they launched their deadly attack on a holiday party. The details emerged as investigators tried to determine whether the rampage that left 14 people dead was terrorism, a workplace grudge or some combination. The husband-and-wife killers were not under FBI scrutiny before the massacre, said a second US official, who likewise was not authorised to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity. Wearing black tactical gear and wielding assault rifles, Farook, a 28-year-old county restaurant inspector, and his wife,

Tashfeen Malik, 27, sprayed as many as 75 rounds into a room at a social service centre for the disabled, where about 75 of Farook’s co-workers had gathered. Farook had attended the event but slipped out and returned in battle dress. Four hours later and three kilometres away, the couple died in a furious gunbattle in which they fired 76 rounds, while 23 law officers unleashed about 380, police said. Yesterday, Police Chief Jarrod Burguan offered a grim inventory that suggested the bloodbath could have been far worse. At the social service centre, the couple left three rigged-together pipe bombs with a remotecontrol detonating device that apparently malfunctioned, and they had more than 1600 rounds of ammunition remaining when police killed them in their rented SUV, Burguan said.

At a family home in the nearby town of Redlands, they had 12 pipe bombs, tools for making more, and over 3000 additional rounds of ammunition, the chief said. “We don’t know if this was workplace rage or something larger or a combination of both,” Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in Washington, echoing President Barack Obama. “We don’t know the motivation.” Investigators are trying to determine whether Farook, who was Muslim, became radicalised – and, if so, how – as well as whether he was in contact with any foreign terrorist organisation, said the US intelligence official, who was not authorised to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The same official said Farook had been in touch on social media with extremists who were un-

der FBI scrutiny. The second US official said the FBI was treating the attack as a potential act of terror but had reached no conclusion that it was. The official said Farook had communication with individuals who were under FBI scrutiny. But the contact was with “people who weren’t significant players on our radar,” dated back some time, and there was no immediate indication of a surge in communication before the shooting. The official cautioned that such contact by itself doesn’t mean someone is a terrorist. Rita Katz, director of SITE Intelligence Group, an organisation that tracks and analyzes extremists, said it hasn’t found any connection between Farook and jihadi groups. But she also said that some of Farook’s social media posts seem to have been deleted before the attack. - AP

Appeals court finds Pistorius guilty of murder An appeals court has decided that Oscar Pistorius got away with murder when he stood trial for killing his girlfriend, a ruling that will almost certainly send the disgraced Olympian back to prison. The court overturned his conviction on the lesser charge of manslaughter in the 2013 shooting death of model Reeva Steenkamp and instead found Pistorius guilty of murder. The latest dramatic twist in the case of the double amputee runner was “a human tragedy of Shakespearean proportions,” wrote Justice Lorimer Eric Leach.

Pistorius, who is under house arrest at his uncle’s mansion in Pretoria, was not in the Bloemfontein courtroom for the verdict. Steenkamp’s mother, June, sat impassively as Leach read the verdict. The 29-year-old Pistorius served one year of a five-year sentence before being put under house arrest in October. The minimum sentence for murder is 15 years, but exceptional circumstances in the case of the former track star, including time served, his disability and his status as a first-time offender, could mean a lower sentence.

Sentencing is up to the North Gauteng High Court, where Pistorius was tried. South African media said Judge Thokozile Masipa, who presided over the original trial, will handle the matter. No sentencing date has been set. The Pistorius family said in a statement: “The legal team will study the finding and we will be guided by them in terms of options going forward.” Steenkamp’s father, Barry, told South African television channel ANN7 the judgment was fair. “Let us now all get on with our lives,” he said. His voice breaking with emotion, he said of his

daughter: “I’m sure she’ll be able to rest as well now.” Pistorius’ trial riveted people around the world because of its gripping saga of a celebrity athlete’s plunge from grace by his own actions. His legs were amputated below the knees when he was 11 months old because he was born without fibula bones due to a congenital defect. However, he grew up playing sports with prosthetics and became a multiple Paralympic champion known as the “Blade Runner” for his carbon-fibre running blades. - AP

Defence Secretary Ash Carter has ordered the military to open all military jobs to women, including the most dangerous commando posts, removing the final barriers that kept women from serving in combat. The historic decision is a formal recognition that thousands of women have fought – and many were wounded or killed – in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. But it’s uncertain how many will actually want to compete for some of the more gruelling Army and Marine Corps infantry posts or for spots on the high-risk special operations teams. - AP

Suing over salt labels New York City’s new warning label for salt-laden chain restaurant food is headed for a court fight, after restaurateurs sued to argue that health regulators overstepped legal bounds to enact the first-ofits-kind requirement. The National Restaurant Association’s suit came just two days after the rule took effect, compelling chain eateries to put a salt-shaker icon on menu items that top the recommended daily limit of 2300 milligrams of sodium – about a teaspoon. The group had vowed to challenge the city Board of Health-approved rule, which will sprinkle salt warnings on some dishes ranging from burgers to pizzas to salads. - AP

Weather hits delivery Wet and cloudy weather prevented NASA from resuming commercial space station deliveries. The space agency was looking to get back on track with the first US shipment to the International Space station in nearly eight months, but thick clouds and rain prevented an unmanned Atlas rocket from lifting off at dusk with 7400 pounds of critical supplies. HIV exposure An ex-fiancee of Charlie Sheen has sued the actor claiming he didn’t disclose he was HIV positive until after they had sex several times. The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by Scottine Ross states she and Sheen had sex five times before she learned he was HIV positive. The Two and a Half Men star publicly disclosed he was HIV positive on the Today show last month. Ross, a porn star who performed under the name Brett Rossi, first met Sheen in November 2013. - AP

Time to end plastic bags love affair Sue Newman

iwis have a love affair with the plastic bag, not just any plastic bag, it’s the thin, lightweight version that is stock in trade at just about every retail outlet. At the time, they seem a handy way of lugging groceries from cart to car or an assortment of items from a department store to home. But for every one of those bags we take home, we’re doing our bit to use a little more oil and to contribute to the growing stockpile of bags that frequently become an environmental hazard. There’s been a recent move to put the onus on plastic bag generators, particularly supermarkets, for collecting and packing the bags for recycling, but with this collection scheme only in the trial stages, it’s going to be a long slow process to clear every house of every surplus bag. The problem with the plastic bag is its obvious usefulness, not just as a carrier of goods, but as a bin liner. If you checked the contents of any rubbish bag you’d find most of the stuff inside was firmly encased in a plastic supermarket bag. And that means millions of bags, whose useful life is just minutes, find their way into landfill sites where they live forever. Currently our plastic bags are made overseas, freighted to New Zealand, used and those that are collected for recycling are shipped off shore only to return as polymer beads. An individual bag’s carbon footprint is millions of times its weight. Turning the tide against the plastic supermarket bag is a tough task. Supermarkets encourage shoppers to bring their own bags, but human nature being what it is, it’s easy to forget. Using the bags on tap is easier and they’re always there. Some trialled a surcharge on store bags. That backfired, customers went elsewhere and the trial was quickly canned. If we are determined to keep those bags in circulation, the Government has to make a commitment to rolling out the current recycling trial across the country. It still won’t be the final answer, but for every bag dropped in the recycling bin, it’s another bag that won’t find itself blowing in the wind or languishing in landfill.

am going away on a hospital visit this week… Normally the patient frets most about themselves in the face of surgeons, but when you have the Farmer as the sole carer of your children while you are “luxuriously relaxing” (as he puts it) in your hospital bed, you tend to forget about things like pain and stitches. Now I will point out that the Farmer is a good Dad … when I’m around … but when I’m not there he tends to revert to what I term his “sheep managing state”. Those of you lucky enough to be married to a man of the land will know exactly what I mean, in that he treats the children like a mob of sheep he’s let out to pasture, shut the gate and left to get on with their business. My case in point was two weeks ago when I was away for two hours and left him babysitting our tribe. “Make sure you keep the house this tidy,” I told him before I left. “And don’t let the tiny terror out of your sight.” To which he responded, newspaper in hand, “Yeah … no worries, love.” My pleasant outing was soon forgotten however, when I arrived home and smelt the tiny terror before I sighted her. “What the …?” I shook my head as she came running up, smelling like she had been swimming in a pool of Mum’s best Red Door perfume. “Why does she smell like that?” I asked my eldest daughter. “Well,” she said pointing at the Farmer, who was conspicuously quiet behind his newspaper. “She swallowed a heap of your perfume Mum, and Dad didn’t even call the poisons centre. He just washed it out with water.” I pulled the Farmer’s newspaper down, glowering. “About that, love,” he smiled warmly. “No harm done and she sure smells nice.” Then there was the one and only time I let him take one of the kids on a school trip. It just happened to be my eldest’s first attempt at skiing. Not one for

Bad berries added to high-risk imports Consumers who bought bags of frozen berries linked to a health scare will be able to get a refund from major supermarkets, as MPI tightens controls at the border, adding frozen fruit to its list of high-risk imported food products. Fruzio Mixed Berries has been identified by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) as a potential source of the Hepatitis A contamination scare. The mix of blackberries and strawberries comes in 500g and 1kg bags, with berries imported from China. The product has been recalled, and anyone with Fruzio Mixed Berries in their freezer is advised to throw them out. However, supermarket giant Foodstuffs – which owns Pak’nSave and New World – said it will offer refunds to customers who return the product.

“Should customers wish to receive a refund, our advice is to take the product back to the store it was purchased from and they will arrange a full refund,” a spokeswoman said. Countdown does not stock Fruzio berries, a spokeswoman said. It comes as MPI and FSL Foods, which owns Fruzio, confirmed the Hepatitis A strain which has struck four people in New Zealand is the same strain which sparked a Hepatitis A scare in Australian berries earlier this year. The strain, which originates in Asia, was linked to Nanna’s berries in Australia in March, where at least 26 people fell ill with the disease. Most forecasts for Fonterra Cooperative Group’s payout to New Zealand farmers this season remain below the company’s estimate even after prices advanced at the GlobalDairyTrade auction this week. Average dairy prices rose 3.6 per cent to US$2419 a tonne at the fortnightly auction, while whole milk powder prices increased 5.3

per cent to US$2260 a tonne. Prices are still short of the US$3000 a tonne for whole milk powder that Fonterra has said are needed to support its current forecast for the 2015/16 season of $4.60 per kilogram of milk solids. It will review that forecast next week. “Current market expectations are for a further lift at the second auction in December. The key

question is whether this is enough - combined with other forwardlooking indicators - for Fonterra to hold their milk price forecast of $4.60/kgMS,” ANZ Bank New Zealand agri economist Con Williams said in a note. “At this stage we struggle to see a favourable catalyst that is likely to deliver the US$3000/t.” - NZME

Having strong governance helps focus on the things that matter most, whether that be property, risk management, recruitment or new technology. It is also important to consider compliance issues if you’re thinking about forming a governance board. A recent change under the Companies Amendment Act 2014 requires all New Zealand companies to have at least one director that either lives in New Zealand, or lives in Australia and is a director of a company incorporated in Australia. If a company is not compliant, they face a loss of company assets to the Crown, a loss of limited liability protection, as well as potential taxation consequences.

An important part of governance is building a succession plan. You’ve worked hard to build up your business and, as you look to the future, want it to remain in good hands. Good succession is not just about the technical components, such as tax and buy-sell agreements, but non-technical components such as family values and family competencies. Getting advice and even developing a strategy for all aspects will produce better results and a lasting legacy for you and your family. As your business or farm grows, your investment increases, dynamics change or you simply reflect on your future, it is important to consider a governance system that suits your commercial objectives and family situation. A governance plan doesn’t need to be complicated but does need to follow some simple principles. The first steps are to start the conversation, seek advice, have a clear understanding of what a governance role entails and begin building a plan. By merging UN support with a grassroots mandate, IVD is a unique opportunity for volunteerinvolving organisations to work with government agencies, non-profit organisations, community groups and the private sector. Established by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly through Resolution 40/212 on December 17 1985, governments, the UN system and civil society organisations have successfully joined volunteers around the world to celebrate the day. Let’s use this day to show our appreciation to all New Zealand volunteers, because individuals and communities benefit considerably as a result of volunteers and volunteering. New Zealand boasts the highest rate of volunteering in the OECD with Kiwis spending an average of 13 minutes a day volunteering; this is significant when compared to the global average, which is only 4 minutes a day (Better Life Index, 2015) On this year’s International

Volunteer Day, we not only celebrate volunteerism in all its facets, but also pay special tribute to volunteers working to implement the new global goals. The theme for 2015 is ‘Transforming Governance’ which emphasises the power volunteers have to change the world through development efforts. This theme is also linked to the important role volunteering plays in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The continuing development of sustainable communities both locally and abroad relies heavily on the engagement, commitment and hard work of volunteers. Through volunteerism the person can impact the sustainable development agenda by mobilising and engaging governments and communities. For IVD 2015 join us in recognizing the individuals who are engaged in volunteering their time, energies, and skills to change the world for a better future. Here in New Zealand organisations need their volunteers so it’s important to thank each and every volunteer in the Mid Canterbury community.
