Breastfeeding mums gather for Big Latch On

Twenty-seven cheerful mums congregated in the Ashburton Baptist Church yesterday to pledge their support for breastfeeding and partake in the international Big Latch On. The event takes place in August every year and involves thousands of mums simultaneously breastfeeding around the globe.

The event coincides with World Breastfeeding Week and helps to build community support and celebrate the health benefits of breastfeeding.

Last year 17,852 mums took part at 758 locations.

Sue-Ann Carr of Plunket helped to organise the Ashburton Latch On and said it was a friendly, relaxed event for mums to take

part in. She said the Ashburton turn-out was a little lower than last year’s 37 mums, but only due to the expansion of the event around the district.

A number of mums opted for new venues, including Rakaia Plunket (yesterday) and Methven Plunket (today).

“Mums who are busy or at work can also send in a ‘brelfie’ (breastfeeding selfie) – so we’re expecting a few of those as well,” Carr said.

Spot prizes and a morning tea were also offered to participants, courtesy of sponsors like Subway, oi4me, Allenton Meat Centre and Haakaa.

The event has been running for 25 years globally and New Zealand has taken part for the past 13.

Housing outside council’s ‘normal’

While she’s surprised that the Ashburton District Council has been taken out of the running as a possible partner in a social housing deal, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said she could understand that the local body process might be too cumbersome for some organisations.

The council was approached recently by Presbyterian Support with a request that it consider some form of partnership to provide housing for older people who could not afford market rental properties.

The request was for the council to provide a block of land on which the organisation would build a five-bedroom home.

In response the council suggested it could consider making an older home it owned available, but when they met last week councillors decided they needed more information from Presbyterian Support before they could commit to any deal.

On Tuesday Presbyterian Support decided to withdraw its request saying the organisation planned to work with a group of people in the community on its social housing concept.

“I understand for parties who deal with council there must be some frustration at the slowness of the way a council moves, we’re not an agile or nimble beast,” Favel said.

If the council had decided to go down the path of a social housing

partnership it would have been a step outside its ‘normal’ business and would therefore be a significant change of direction.

“If we’d gone in a direction like this I would have liked the wider community to have some input.”

The council’s request for additional information was not unreasonable, she said.

“This is what we’re charged to do as representatives of the community.

“I am interested in social issues, but as a council we can’t be keepers for every organisation in our community.”

It was good that Presbyterian Support had other options as the social housing deal may not ultimately have been a good fit for council, Favel said.

■ OPERATION TIGER

13 arrested in drugs haul worth $500,000 Drugs with a street value of more than half a million dollars and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash are part of a haul seized by police.

Operation Tiger, which spanned six months, was a dual-agency operation involving the Waitemata Police Tactical Crime Team and Customs.

It was specifically targeting offenders importing Class A and B drugs into New Zealand through international mail, which had been purchased on the dark net using the bitcoin currency.

The investigation was initiated after results from a previous operation in 2016 found people commonly engaging in the online purchasing of illicit drugs were often young people who

did not typically have a record of previous drug offending.

Following drug interceptions at the border, Waitemata Police worked closely with Customs to identify and track down the offenders who had purchased and imported “hardcore” drugs from overseas such as methamphetamine, LSD, fentanyl and GBL. As a result of Operation Tiger, police arrested 13 people who were charged with a total of 79 charges – the majority of which related to the importation, possession or supply of Class A and B drugs.

Eleven men and one woman – ranging from 19 to 59 years old – have since appeared in either the Waitakere, North Shore or Auckland District Courts.

Forced to watch as house burns

A Hampstead resident had no choice but to sit and watch nervously as her house burnt and firefighters battled to save it yesterday afternoon.

The Willow Street property went up in smoke at 12.30pm. It is understood that the fire began in the kitchen then spread throughout the house.

Courtney Dowdle was in her room when she “smelled smoke and burning” and rang 111. Young children were also inside at the time it caught alight.

Three fire trucks from Ashburton and one from Rakaia rushed to the scene, along with police who cordoned off the street.

Plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the property from all over Ashburton.

Firefighters were there until late in the afternoon, dampening down hotspots and attempting to salvage undamaged possessions from the house.

Dowdle had the opportunity to see inside her house at around 2.40pm, and described the damage as “crazy”.

“Everything in my room has got

black on it,” she said. “The kitchen is all burnt … and the lounge.

The window’s smashed out and you can see right through.”

Firefighters also removed part of the roof in order to check on hotspots.

“The fire spread right through the ceiling and into the roof space,” said volunteer support officer Murray Cairns.

“We had to take some iron off to keep an eye on it.”

He described the property as “severely damaged” and said firefighters would be working to determine the cause of the fire. It is not being treated as suspicious.

The property is adjacent to four shops, from which a number of staff watched the action unfold.

One staff member from Panache Hair Studio said she was alerted to the fire by a client, who made an off-hand comment about “all the smoke”.

“Then she was like, oh, didn’t you know, the house behind you is alight.”

Cairns said firefighters would likely work at the property for the rest of Friday, and return this morning to check on it and continue investigations.

It’s 15 years since Mid Canterbury hosted the Ranfurly Shield, but the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union was more than up to the task.

“I was pretty pleased with how the day went, the boys got good support and we had great support from businesses in the community,” said MCRU CEO Ian Patterson.

“It can be hard for the crowd to get behind the boys when they go behind early but they were good.”

In brief Unexpected ride A caravan has been stolen from Petone with a man still inside, police say. The man, who was sleeping in the van, got a rude awakening when he realised he was on the move. He contacted police just after midnight. “This then gave police the inside word on the caravan’s exact movements, as the man was able to update police on exactly where he was going,” police said. The ute towed the caravan for what is believed to be about 6km when police stopped it. The driver of the ute was unaware anyone was in the caravan until he was met by the police unit.

Shield fever

Suspicious death Police are investigating after a man’s body was found on a South Canterbury riverbank. A 45-yearold Fairlie man was found dead on a bank of the Opihi River, near the Skipton Bridge, on Tuesday evening. Police Inspector Dave Gaskin says the post-mortem was carried out Thursday and investigations are focused on the cause of the man’s injuries. – NZN

The home safety service for victims of family violence has helped more than 2200 people since it was launched two years ago. The service makes homes safer by installing stronger locks, security lights and monitored alarms. Justice Minister Amy Adams says in the first two years it has made 648 homes safer for adult victims and their children.

“No-one should have to live in fear of violence in their own homes,” she said.

Lost story found Katherine Mansfield’s first published work has been unearthed at Wellington City Library. A local author researching a book about the famous writer found the lost story and previously undiscovered letters in the library’s archives. The short story, His Little Friend, was written by Mansfield when she was just 11 years old. It is under her given name at the time, Kathleen M. Beauchamp, and was published on the children’s page of the New Zealand Graphic on October 13, 1900.

Lawyers gone wild? Or just a bit of fun?

Lawyers were loitering in police cells, taking off with shopping trolleys and running amok in the streets of Ashburton on Wednesday afternoon – but they weren’t up to any mischief, nor losing the plot.

The seemingly suspect behaviour was actually the effect of a scavenger hunt organised by the Ashburton Law Practitioners’ Society.

Groups from Argyle Welsh Finnegan, Russell Moon & Fail, Tavendale and Partners and White Fox & Jones joined in the amicable inter-firm rivalry and completed challenges across town.

Lynda Scott from White Fox & Co helped organise the event and said it was a good, fun way to team-build and connect with other firms, alongside regular sports fixtures and monthly meetings.

“The teams had to take pictures of their members doing things like using gym equipment, imitating shop displays, dining at restaurants, posing with police officers and assembled in human pyramids at Baring Square West,” she said.

“We all had a lot of fun.”

A team from Russell Moon & Fail racked up 431 points and were deemed the “outright winners”.

They took home a trophy and now have the task of plotting a new challenge for the firms.

Turei won’t be resigning

BY KAREN SWEENEY Metiria Turei won’t be resigning as co-leader of the Green Party after new admissions around her benefit fraud and lying to the Electoral Commission.

Instead she says she won’t be seeking or accepting a ministerial position in any Labour-Green government.

Ms Turei, who had her heart set on becoming Social Development Minister if the Greens helped form government, was accompanied by co-leader James Shaw for her announcement yesterday.

It comes three weeks after she admitted committing benefit fraud in the 1990s, by lying about having flatmates while she was an unemployed solo mum and law student.

On Thursday night came a new admission that her mother was one of those flatmates – though she maintains they were financially independent – as well as a confession that she registered to vote at a false address in 1993 so she could vote for her friend who was a candidate

Former Labour leader Andrew Little made the same admission before he resigned this week, but Ms Turei said she had zero intention of quitting.

She decided yesterday morning to instead to give up the possibility of becoming a minister in September. “I would very much have liked to have been a minister in the new government,” she said.

She acknowledged it put Labour in a difficult position and the Labour Party had expressed concerns with her. But ending poverty had been her top goal in parliament and remaining an MP was the best way to do that, she said.

Mr Shaw said he never asked for Ms Turei’s resignation and supported her as co-leader.

He didn’t perceive any more difficulty in the relationship with Labour now than several weeks ago.

Man’s Devast8 tattoo to stay The man with the famed Devast8 tattoo has done a U-turn on removing it.

Mark Cropp, 19, shot to fame globally after Herald Focus interviewed him last month about his plea for a job on Facebook. But he has now decided not to get rid of it.

His brother tattooed the nickname “Devast8” on his face during a heavy night of drinking in jail.

“Once it was started, I thought, I can’t go back on it now.

“I wish I had stopped while the outline was there to be quite honest,” he said.

Cropp had been serving a two-year, three-month sentence for pulling a knife on a tourist over a drug deal gone wrong.

He initially said he had hoped to keep the tattoo and for a potential employer to look past it, but he changed his mind overnight when he became an international sensation, and accepted an offer from Sacred Laser in Kingsland to have it removed for free.

Herald Focus went to Cropp’s first laser removal session, where a section of his tattoo was worked on and partly

lasered off. On Wednesday, Cropp told Focus he was working night shifts and things were going well so had put the laser removal on hold until he got used to his hours.

However, on Thursday, when asked about his progress, Sacred Laser said Cropp had rejected their offer and wouldn’t

be having further sessions.

The parlour expressed disappointment, but said their offer to remove it for free still stood if Cropp were to change his mind.

Cropp has not responded to calls from Herald Focus yesterday.

usical activities in Ashburton were “at sixes and sevens”, and it had been that way for many years, according to an Ashburton Guardian editorial in 1967.

But that problem was being solved with the formation of the Ashburton Civic Music Council, a group that is still going strong 50 years later.

The music council co-ordinates a wide range of bands, groups and choirs, and holds two major events each year – a festival concert and band concert.

The chairperson is the mayor of the day, who in 1967 was Mr J. Davidson. The secretary was Mr A. Chapman, treasurer Mr H. C. Childs, and chairman of the music committee was Mr A. B. Packham.

The music council’s formation resulted from a meeting

sponsored by the retiring Ashburton Music Festival Committee, responsible for an annual choirs’ festival in the previous nine years.

“The members of which are deserving of every credit for the thought and time expended in bringing the move to fruition,” said the editorial.

Treasurer of the group today, Peter Muir, said the music council had since been successful in co-ordinating the town’s diverse groups, and promoting musical and cultural activities in the town.

“There were different choirs, musical groups and bands battling alone to organise various functions to successfully promote their cause, so it was felt that one organisation could bring this together,” Muir said.

It was with support from the then Ashburton Borough Coun-

cil that the original committee formed, with representatives of 13 musical societies altogether encompassing a membership of over 4100.

The affiliated organisations were Ashburton Operatic Society, Tinwald Music Group, Ashburton Musical Club, Registered Music Teachers, Cavendish Club Music Group, Primary Schools’ Music Festival Association, Ashburton Salvation Army Band, Ashburton College Music Department, Combined Church Choirs, Ashburton Orchestral Group, CWI Choir, Hinds District Choir and Ashburton Silver Band.

Its first two objectives were to promote the purchase of a hall/ performance centre, as well as a broadcasting station in the town.

“At that time Kerridge Odeon closed the St James Theatre and

the music council made approaches for the possible purchase for the community as a civic centre.

“A proposition on very favourable terms was obtained and forwarded to the borough council for consideration. Unfortunately it was not taken up. The music council kept lobbying for a civic centre for many years after,” Muir said.

Events over the years have included the annual Festival Concert and annual bands concert.

In addition Handel’s Messiah was first promoted by the music council in 1969, and held every second year until 2003.

It also arranged a Festival of the Harvest Praise for several years during the 1980s and 1990s.

The music council provides two scholarships annually to the Ash-

burton Society of Performing Arts for its annual competitions.

The Festival Concert is still going strong today. It all began at the old RSA Concert Hall, where the Z Service Station currently stands, before moving to the Tinwald Memorial Hall, then Ashburton College and more latterly St Stephen’s Church.

This year’s Festival Concert will be held at St Stephen’s on August 20, 2pm, and will feature the Salvation Army Songsters from Christchurch, St David’s Church Choir, Tuarangi Singing Group, St Stephen’s Church Choir, Samoan Catholic Choir, and the Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club’s accordion section.

“This provided an enjoyable spring afternoon of music in the magnificent surroundings of the gardens. The Rotary Club has been a supporter of this event in assisting to transport resthome patrons,” Muir said.

This year’s concert will be held on November 5.

The music council helped with obtaining a community grand piano in 1979, currently housed in the Sinclair Centre.

It was led by mayor at the time, Geoff Geering, and initiated the project with a donation of $500.

The Mid Canterbury Arts Council is credited with co-ordinating and fundraising for the $9000 grand piano purchase.

The Ashburton Civic Music Council celebrated 25 years in 1992. Cutting the anniversary cake are original secretary Allan Chapman and patron Gladys Coxshall.

Franchise’s youngest owner just 21 he spent but it was more than enough for a house deposit, all earned by the sweat of his brow.

Freeman was brought up by a single mum. Although she showered him with love and support she didn’t give him a cent to buy the franchise.

More flights may spark airfare war Air New Zealand will add almost 60,000 additional seats between Auckland and Honolulu next year, which could lead to an airfare war on the increasingly popular route.

Hawaii is one of the high growth destinations for New Zealanders who are travelling in record numbers on holidays overseas as competition between airlines and travel companies increases.

Air New Zealand will operate an additional 94 return services between April and October, moving to daily flights and up to nine services a week during the busy July school holiday period.

Services will be flown by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for most

of the year, with a change to the Boeing 777-200 during the July and September holiday periods.

Hawaiian Airlines, which entered this market in 2013, said it was ready for more competition.

Hawaiian operates return flights up to four times a week and has just launched new tactical fares to Honolulu and outer islands starting at $497 one-way, for bookings before August 8.

The airline said its AucklandHonolulu service reinvigorated interest in Hawaii as a destination.

“We observe airline competitor activity with interest and expect seasonal capacity shifts to occur, but we remain focused on our own

plans. Hawaiian Airlines sees additional and sustainable growth continuing from Pacific Rim countries including New Zealand,” said a spokeswoman.

When destinations boomed in popularity, other airlines sought to capitalise, she said.

“Hawaii is our home base and our speciality, and we look forward to welcoming a growing number of Kiwis.”

Signs of more intense competition come as figures from the Hawaiian Tourism Authority show the number of Kiwi visitors to the state increased by more than 6 per cent to more than 27,000 in the first six months of the year.

Failed engineering firm owes $5.2m A&G Price, the Thames engineering company which went into liquidation last week, owed $5.2 million to its creditors, the liquidator’s first report says.

The company had been operating in Thames for nearly 150 years, but recently suffered a downturn in business and profitability “resulting in it experiencing cash flow difficulties for some months prior to the appointment of the liquidators,” liquidators Gareth Hoole and Clive Bish of Ecovis KGA said in their report.

“The company operated under those cash flow constraints with the support of its shareholder but ultimately that situation became unsustainable and the decision

leaving. I like to work 40 to 50 hours a week so I don’t intend on stepping down at any point.”

Brayden Freeman put away every cent he could spare since he started making pizzas at 14.

Thanks to his hard work he’s now become the youngest Hell Pizza franchise owner in New Zealand at the age of 21.

Freeman started working parttime at a Christchurch outlet in 2010, working for $12.50 an hour on night shifts and Saturdays.

“I set myself a big goal, which was one day I wanted to buy a house,” he said. “Having this big goal helped me save, it was an incentive to put away as much as I can every week.”

The store was damaged in the first earthquake but he moved to another Hell store and kept rising up the ranks, until he was regularly putting in 50 to 60 hours a week – occasionally 80 – as store manager.

Then head office offered him the opportunity to buy the new Hell Pizza store on Hereford Street.

“I thought, I’ve put all this money aside for this dream – why not use it for this instead.”

Turei fails on trust standard Colin Williscroft SENIOR REPORTER

I

f Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei really thinks she can ride out the political storm she finds herself at the centre of without further harming her own reputation and that of her party then she’s kidding herself.

When Turei first announced that she lied to Work and Income back in the 1990s about having flatmates, so the benefit she received as a young solo mother would not be reduced, there were probably a few people who cut her a bit of slack.

While not condoning her actions, there seemed to be a view that she was only young at the time and if we were all going to be judged on mistakes we made when we were a similar age, many of us could be looking fairly embarrassed later in life.

In fact there were some people who praised her bravery for now choosing to make that information public in the name of highlighting an unfair benefit system.

Unfortunately it’s all turned pear-shaped since then.

The problem for Turei is that if you’re going to open up like that about yourself you’ve got to go all the way, not neglect to mention some bits at the start, because they will inevitably leak out at some point and then all that credit you’ve claimed for ‘honesty’ seeps away.

So when it became public that she had also knowingly enrolled to vote at an address where she was not entitled to, while on the surface it was not as big an admission as potential benefit fraud, you started to wonder what other skeletons there are in the closet.

Then of course there’s the double standard.

Earlier this year National MP Todd Barclay fell on his sword, albeit grudgingly, after mounting pressure and calls for his resignation, some of those coming from the Greens.

So it now seems a bit rich that Turei is refusing to go, for what may yet prove to be criminal behaviour, even if she says she won’t seek to be a minister if Labour and the Greens win this year’s election.

Like it or not politicians are in positions of power and responsibility and people expect to be able to trust them, particularly ones in leadership roles.

The Greens have set themselves up as parliament’s social conscience and there are standards that come with that which have to be met, particularly when it comes to trust.

Great expectations

I

n 50 something days, these are the challenges new (and latest) Labour leader, Jacinda Ardern, must have taken on, and overcome, if she is to enter the Beehive on a late September day, the conquering heroine all those “on the left” – if, indeed, there still is “a left”, out there – so devoutly wish her to be.

It is, one might think “a tall order”, even for one so young, energetic and blessed with a winning smile, but they are the Great Expectations her battered Party has for her to tackle and triumph over.

Andrew Little’s earnest efforts were having no effect; perhaps her youthful charm and dedication to the task can. Euphoria is all very well but not nearly as good as votes in the bag.

Under her predecessor, Andrew Little, the Labour marching song was, A Fresh Approach with which Labour people everywhere must have agreed was certainly needed but which still failed to make waves amongst the voting public.

Thus, it has been abandoned – at great billboard expense – while a new form of words is found which will, it is hoped, have the required dynamic effect the last lot so obviously lacked.

So, can Jacinda convince the voting punters she can do something positive about some of the following, random, problems currently facing the nation, affecting “her people” as well as everybody else? For a start, there are, demonstrably, not enough doctors to heal our sick but there are, at the same time, far too many “homeless” because there are insufficient “affordable” houses for them to live in.

Jacinda must also grapple with grubby rivers, access to some of them seriously disputed between Crown and Maori, just to make worse a seemingly intractable problem.

Elsewhere, there are too many immigrants for local infrastructure to cope with yet not enough to do the jobs Kiwis won’t.

Jacinda must further accept the fact of our over-flowing prison population where the majority of inmates are disproportionately Maori, and initiate meaningful change.

Beyond the prison walls, we suffer from a dire shortage of teachers in our schools, with the real prospect of 2018’s new students finding teacher-less classes as they begin their academic careers. It is, too – and regrettably – the fact that we suffer in Aotearoa, New Zealand, 2017, from inadequate mental hospital facilities to meet a relentlessly growing demand.

For good measure, we might just throw in there, as well, the synthetic drug crisis, from which the gullible and the innocent are dying, often in the street. Jacinda will have to absorb all that, look to find solutions, long term and short, and still come up smiling.

After that, to occupy her and her newly-enthused colleagues – not least her deputy, Kelvin Davis, whose prospects I have been canvassing in these columns for some time – there is, also, the little matter of collapsing gorges all over the country onto the vital roads beneath, the said roads to be out of commission for many months, which will have to be urgently confronted by the collective Labour commitment.

Communities cut off and with futures bleak will be looking for serious action if they are to cast a Labour vote.

Now, we hear, a particularly nasty and potentially lethal bovine disease has been found – in South Canterbury – for the first time in New Zealand.

Fletcher Building, too, seems to be struggling, while in the medical world, elective surgery figures are said to have been “rigged” by National – a large percentage of “eye operations” merely injection procedures carried out by nurses – so Jacinda and Co will be very keen to see something done about that and that, in turn, they are seen to be doing something about it.

The above is not, of course, an exhaustive list of the difficulties and dilemmas the nation is facing as Election ’17 draws near but it is enough for Jacinda and her new and improved crew to be getting on with.

Whether, to go with all the above, Jacinda and Grant Robertson will have the necessary economic clout and financial dexterity to deal with it will be another, “in your face” challenge.

Jacinda’s “messiah-like” arrival on the scene might even stop the media obsessing on the Metiria Turei confessions and the gales of comment that have been unleashed by them, while the continuing story of Todd Barclay may slowly fade though, the media will be reluctant to let it (him) go.

Somehow, I feel Jacinda and Kelvin will break that futile circle and introduce a dose of realism which may well make Labour thoroughly electable and leave the Greens chasing their tails frantically, to ensure Labour will still need them post September 23 (regardless of Metiria’s soul-shifting confession.)

Meanwhile, Winston “Bottom Line” Peters is also waiting to see various referenda – such as the reduction of the number of MPs to one hundred, the abolition of the Maori seats and the maintenance of the retirement pension age at sixty-five, and several others – put in place before he will deign to lower himself to add his priceless support to any particular Party until after the election results are announced.

a bauble of office – a trinket he has always regarded with fake scorn – lies? All that may now have changed. To get the call from Labour will require him to be less shrill and climb down a peg or two.

Some of his “bottom lines “ will swiftly have to be cut adrift and left to sink under their own spurious weight.

One wonders, too, what dapper, James Shaw, co-conspirator with the now “legendary” Ms Turei, makes of it all. Often, it’s fairly obvious he wishes he were somewhere else.

Finally, I feel it should be said – as it was of a far less worthy character in Macbeth – that “nothing became Andrew Little like the leaving of it”. (i.e. his leadership of the Labour Party) His loyalty to that Party remains fully in tact.

What was the point of “fighting on to the end”, still losing heavily, presiding over the post-mortem, then leaving the field while yet another leader was appointed, who would then face a further three years in Opposition. Nobly, Little put personal ambition aside and went for Party loyalty when, without him, there was still an outside chance of winning in 2017 rather than waiting for the off-chance of that happening three long years hence?

Well done, Andrew, your priorities are admirable.

However, despite a late change in Labour’s mount, the race towards September 23 thunders on; how many further fence-fallers will there be along the way, I wonder?

Fire ravages Torch Tower A residential tower in Dubai’s famous Marina is on fire.

Footage shows flames climbing up the 79-storey Torch Tower in the United Arab Emirates tourism hotspot.

It was once the tallest residential building in the world and stands at more than 335m tall.

Burning debris can be seen spiralling to the ground as firefighters desperately try to tackle the blaze.

Dubai Media Office has confirmed the fire is largely under control.

It also said everyone has been evacuated succesfully and no casualties have been reported so far.

Earlier, Dubai Media Office advised Civil Defence was tackling the fire.

“Firefighting squads from four Civil Defence stations have been deployed to bring the fire under control and ensure safety of residents.”

Rob Shepherd tweeted: “Another major fire just broken out at Torch Tower Dubai friends and relatives just escaping

now.” Cara Spillane tweeted: “Terrifying to see Torch Tower, in the area I live in on fire now.

Hope everyone gets out OK.” Claire Hopkin added: “One of the skyscrapers near me is on fire! Looks like Princess.”

According to UAE civil defence teams, the fire spread uncontrollably partly due to flammable exterior cladding panels, similar to those used in Grenfell Tower.

The combination of cheap combustible cladding and insulation has been blamed for the deadly spread of the June 14 fire in west London, which killed at least 80 people.

Trump wants ‘honest’ outcome President Donald Trump said yesterday he hopes for a “truly honest” outcome from the Russia investigation that has consumed the opening months of his presidency, and he challenged Democrats to either continue their “obsession with a hoax” or begin serving the interests of the American people.

At a boisterous campaign rally in Trump-friendly West Virginia, Trump slammed the investigation as a “fake story that is demeaning to all of us and most of all demeaning to our country and demeaning to our Constitution.”

He commented hours after news broke that Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the investigation, had empanelled a grand jury in the case.

“I just hope the final determination is a truly honest one, which is what the millions of people who gave us our big win in November deserve and what all Americans who want a better future want and deserve,” Trump told thousands of cheering, signwaving supporters packed into

Trump maintains there were no ties between his campaign and Russia and says no wrongdoing was committed. His frustration over the investigation peaked in recent weeks as he began attacking Attorney General Jeff Sessions for recusing himself from the investigation. Sessions, most recently a US senator, was an early and ardent Trump supporter.

“Most people know there were no Russians in our campaign.

There never were,” he told the cheering crowd in West Virginia.

“We didn’t win because of Russia.

We won because of you.”

Trump argued that Democrats are pushing the “totally made-up Russia story” because “they have no message, no agenda and no vision”.

“The Russia story is a total fabrication. It’s just an excuse for the greatest loss in the history of American politics,” he said, referring to his victory over Hillary Clinton. “It just makes them feel better when they have nothing else to talk about.”

Men charged with terrorism in plane plot Two men were charged with terrorism offences in Australia yesterday in connection with an alleged plot to bring down an airplane, police said.

The men, ages 49 and 32, were each charged with two counts of planning a terrorist act, Australian Federal Police said in a statement. They were among four men arrested during a series of raids in Sydney last weekend in connection with what authorities described as a credible threat to bring down a plane.

A third man remains in custody but has not yet been charged, while the fourth man was released without charge on Tuesday.

Officials have provided few details of the alleged plot, including the precise nature of the threat or

any airlines involved. On Tuesday, the United Arab Emirates’ national airline, Etihad Airways, said it was working with Australian police in the investigation, suggesting one of its planes may have been targeted. Etihad refused to confirm, however, if it had been a target.

Earlier yesterday, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said there was no longer any threat to Australia’s aviation industry from the alleged plot.

Turnbull said the country’s intelligence agency is restoring the aviation threat level to what it was before the men were arrested.

Crusaders ignore thin air

The Crusaders are so determined not to fade in the Super Rugby final against the Lions that they are virtually disregarding the thin air at Johannesburg – with the support of medical science.

Playing at 1750m above sea level has undone countless visitors at Ellis Park.

The most recent victims were the Hurricanes, who crumbled late in the semi-final, watching their 19-point lead transform into a 15-point defeat.

Crusaders and All Blacks hooker Codie Taylor revealed altitude won’t be a factor for him and his team, simply because they plan to ignore it.

“Our doctor told us that it doesn’t affect you. It is high altitude but physiologically it doesn’t affect your body,” he said.

“It’s just more of a mindset.

“That’s the way we’re looking at it this week, we’ve just got to push through it and just get the headspace right.”

Thin air and jet lag won’t be the only adjustment for the seventime champions.

Their two play-off wins have come on a wet Christchurch surface far from the warm, hard conditions expected tomorrow morning (NZT).

The challenge of playing in front of 62,000 Lions supporters will be a world apart from the small recent crowds at wintry AMI Stadium.

However, nothing changes between the touchlines, Taylor says.

“For us, it’s about playing the game we’ve been playing all year.

“We like to apply pressure in different areas,” he said.

“On a dry track you’re looking

“We’ve talked all week about what to expect.”

Taylor says analysis of the Lions’ defeat of the Hurricanes showed that a momentum shift came when the home side began to launch lineout drives.

It tired the Hurricanes and let the Lions dictate the tempo in a dizzying second-half surge.

Stopping a repeat will fall on the shoulders of the All Blacksladen Crusaders pack, Taylor said.

“They obviously won through the momentum they built through their lineout,” he said.

“They’ve scored the most tries off mauls this year in the competition and they haven’t let any in so it’s going to be an awesome challenge for us to step up.

“They’re a good team and they went to their strengths in the second half of that game and kept the Hurricanes guessing.”

Both teams have named unchanged teams, with the Lions gunning for a maiden crown while the Crusaders are out to break a drought dating back to 2008.

No, a bigger-picture view is required, and it hinges on this: The Crusaders will have 12 All Blacks in their match-day squad of 23,

including nine of their forwards.

They will feel that they should have beaten Warren Gatland’s outfit but for Poite’s bizarre about-turn and their own wastefulness, and there will be added resolve to get the job done this time.

What is certain is that mental toughness and determination will be crucial if they are to

win despite the disadvantage of having to travel from a freezing Christchurch across the Indian Ocean to a warm and sunny Johannesburg situated at 1700m above sea level.

The disappointment against the other Lions team could serve as an extra incentive and every little bit will help if they are to win their eighth title.

Getting the jump on Whitelock

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY The Crusaders’ dominance this season has been built around the form and leadership of Sam Whitelock, a key component of one of the best set pieces in the competition, but the lineout prowess of the All Black is set to be challenged by Franco Mostert.

The 26-year-old Lions lock, who made his Springboks debut last year, has been a devastating weapon for Johan Ackermann’s team.

Mostert, only 1.98m tall compared with Whitelock’s 2.03m, has secured 16 lineout steals this season, more than twice as many as the next best player, Stephan Lewies from the Sharks.

Crusaders No.8 Kieran Read is the Crusaders’ best operator in this area, winning six steals which puts him seventh on the list.

Both Mostert, described recently by former Boks legend Bakkies Botha as the best lock in South Africa, and Read won two steals in their respective semi-finals last weekend, the South African against the Hurricanes at Ellis Park when the visitors were in good attacking positions.

The Hurricanes were enjoying a good first-half lead at the time only for the combinations between Dane Coles and his jumpers to break down. If finals rugby hinges on winning the small moments as the players and coaches say, who knows what could have happened if both lineouts were won?

Read’s steals were similarly crucial in a tight game against the Chiefs, a match in which his side won only 30 per cent possession, and the All Blacks skipper will be a key man in spreading the lineout load for 28-year-old Whitelock.

Lock Scott Barrett is also an extremely safe option for the Crusaders.

Lineout steals are momentum killers for the team throwing the ball in, and the Crusaders have talked extensively about how they must fuel theirs at Ellis Park while limiting the Lions’.

Mostert’s ability isn’t confined to the set piece, either. He has made 145 tackles, the ninth best in the competition, and better than Matt Todd’s 136.

The Lions mauled the Hurricanes to death in the second half last weekend and the Crusaders will back themselves to take the home side on.

Unfortunately for the Mid Canterbury Hammers, only showing up half-way through the first half is not going to win you a match against the best provincial side in New Zealand.

In the first Ranfurly Shield Challenge to be held at the Ashburton Showgrounds in 15 years, Mid Canterbury were simply outplayed by big brothers Canterbury, losing 69-7.

The decision to take an early penalty shot at goal may have led some to believe that Canterbury were expecting a close game.

However, the penalty was missed by first-five Brett Cameron, leaving the scores level.

But Canterbury soon gave the Hammers a fair idea of what to expect for the next 75 minutes when after spreading the play well through the backs, they were able to pick and go within five yards at a rate which Mid Canterbury could not defend, leading to the first try of the game, scored by Jed Brown.

The big hits were flying in from both sides, with Mid Canterbury’s defence seemingly holding strong, however, Tom Sanders was able to split the gap and dot down under the posts.

Both tries were converted by the boot of Cameron, giving Canterbury a 14-0 lead after 13 minutes.

Cameron followed that up with

some electric footwork to weave between the Hammers’ defence and score a try of his own, which he converted.

Missed tackles became somewhat of a theme for Mid Canterbury, and several of them allowed left winger Marshall Suckling to run straight down the line and in for his first try.

That play got the Hammers’ and the fans’ tails up, with the defence finally providing solid resistance to the Canterbury onslaught.

Five minutes after the restart, hooker Nathan Vella was able to pick up the ball off the back of the ruck and run in an easy try.

Winger Josh McKay picked up his first try, shortly followed by Vella’s second as the floodgates began to open.

Nigel Gibb then got in on the action, with the score quickly expanding to 59-0.

A juggled pass from Masiwini brought the attack to an end however, effectively sealing the end of the game.

“When you look at it we were up against the best side in New Zealand so it was always going to be tough,” said co-coach James Jowsey.

“The boys went out there and did what we asked them to do and kept on fighting and as a coach that is all you can ask for.”

The Hammers will have one last hit-out against the West Coast on August 19 before opening their Heartland campaign against Poverty Bay on August 26.

Taylor signs long-term Codie Taylor has become the first All Black to sign a long-term contract with New Zealand Rugby, extending his contract through to 2021. 26-year-old Taylor, who’s currently in South Africa with the Crusaders preparing for the Super Rugby Final against the Lions, said re-signing with New Zealand Rugby, the Crusaders and Canterbury was the best decision for him and his family. “I feel like I am living the dream at the moment, raising my young family here in New Zealand and playing for these teams that I love, so recommitting through to 2021 just makes sense for me,” Taylor said.

Lions unchanged Johan Ackermann’s final selectorial act as Lions coach has been to name an unchanged team for the Super Rugby final in Johannesburg.

The South African side has matched the Crusaders by unveiling an identical side to that which claimed victory in the semi-finals last week.

Formula E eyes Auckland circuit A motorsport event in downtown Auckland is once again on the cards with a push for the City of Sails to host a round of the Formula E World Championship in the coming years.

The all-electric category is fast becoming the biggest motorsport championship in the world as one by one the world’s biggest car brands join.

In the past couple of weeks BMW, Mercedes and Porsche have exited other leading motor racing categories to turn their attention to Formula E. Many believe it will rival and even supersede Formula 1 as the sport’s premier category within the next five years.

While ATEED [Auckland Council’s events arm] has chosen not to support a bid at present due to work on the inner city rail link future plans are afoot to bring the fast-growing championship to Auckland in the midlonger term.

There have been expressions of interest from NZ Major Events and a private group with the private group aiming for a date two or three years away as a genuine target.

Kiwi driver Mitch Evans has just completed his first Formula E season with Panasonic Jaguar Racing and is aware of the attempt to try and get a race to Auckland.

“I have been in the loop a little bit with it,”

Evans said. “There is some talk – there is also talk of a race going to Australia as well.

“Probably not for a couple of seasons but those rumours are true and I would just love for that to happen.

“I think Auckland would be a great fit for it and I just hope the city gets behind it like all these other big cities.”

The series has made a name for itself with inner-city street races including stops in some of the biggest markets in the world – New York, Hong Kong, London, Moscow, Beijing and Buenos Aires to name a few.

The model that has worked with those cities sees government funding the cost of the event to the tune of around $11m a year with specific GDP growth and flow on benefits justifying the spend. Auckland has spent in excess of that amount on the World Masters Games and the Volvo Ocean Race in recent years.

Auckland has failed in previous attempts to bring a Supercars race to downtown Auckland due largely to the disruption to business and commuter traffic on already gridlocked roads.

But the Formula E format runs only across a weekend rather than Friday-Sunday and could have much less of an impact on locals as the proposed Supercars plan. The Herald understands a route has even been proposed that met council approval. - NZME

Celtic are continuing their charge to the Mid Canterbury Netball premier title, while the race heats up for the best positions heading in to the semi-finals.

League leaders Celtic faced what will most likely be their last true test ahead of the semi-finals when they clashed with Methven.

In what was a lower scoring game than the past few weeks, Celtic were able to take out a 2817 victory.

Ashburton College, who have shown signs of the post-holiday wobbles got back on to steady footing when they breezed past United 35-19.

Hampstead have continued their strong run of form, downing

strugglers Southern 34-26.

This leaves Celtic six points clear with a round to play, securing them first place and top seed in the semi-finals.

Two teams, AshColl and Hampstead, sit behind them on 10 points, with Methven snapping at their heels on nine. Both United and Southern sit out of contention for the semi-finals, and will

be guaranteed to face each other in two weeks’ time.

In the premier 2 grade, Rakaia breezed past Celtic C 41-31, while Celtic B and Hampstead B played out a high-scoring match, with Hampstead just squeaking home 42-39.

Ashburton College B were able to take down Southern B comfortably, winning 36-20.

Rasmussen signs up with the Stars Silver Ferns midcourter Grace Rasmussen has signed for the Northern Stars for the 2018 ANZ Premiership season, adding a jolt of leadership to the franchise after Leana de Bruin’s departure.

The 46-cap Rasmussen was released by the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic at the end of a 2017 season in which they failed to make the finals series.

She will now up sticks and move back to her Auckland hometown, where she played for six seasons with the Northern Mystics until 2014, and will likely play a key role alongside Kayla Cullen in the Stars midcourt.

Wills said the acquisition of Rasmussen was crucial for her side.

Her speed off the line, high work rate and agility – at wing attack, centre or even goal attack – would only strengthen the Stars’ final third, as would her Commonwealth Games-winning experience.

Hugh grabs very special opportunity

What was supposed to be a winter break to focus on study has turned in to a golden opportunity to rub shoulders with the best of the best for young water-skier Hugh Donaldson.

Donaldson was initially selected to the New Zealand team for the 2017 IWWF World Waterski Open Championships as a reserve, but was given the call-up after one of the team members was injured.

“I saw on Facebook a few pictures of him with a cast on his ankle and stuff so we rung the coach to find out what was going on,” he said.

“It was a bit of a surprise and I am quite excited to be going.”

It will be the second time Donaldson has attended a world event this year, having competed at the Junior Worlds in Chile back in January, where he placed eighth, equalling his personal best in the slalom event and finishing as the top Australasian points scorer.

Hugely supportive mum Janeen said the opportunity to go to the open worlds at this young age is something very special.

“He has plenty of time ahead of him so we will be going in with the main goal of breaking pbs (personal bests),” she said.

“It will be a whole different level for him and will be a great experience.”

Hugh, along with brother George, will spend the next month training in Florida before travelling on to Paris for the world championships, beginning on September 3 and running through till September 11.

Crowd numbers a real problem for rugby W

ith a sell-out crowd lined up to watch the Crusaders thrash the Lions at Ellis Park tomorrow morning, the question must be asked, again, why nobody turns up at AMI Stadium, when the Crusaders played their quarter- and semi-finals, both against top quality New Zealand teams.

There are some extenuating circumstances for the quarter-final, when the Highlanders were lucky to even get to the park with the atrocious weather causing a state of emergency in Christchurch.

There were many Ashburton fans sitting at home watching that game on telly, with tickets to the stadium sitting unused in their pockets; that scenario would be played out all around the Crusaders’ catchment.

For the Chiefs game though, it was a clear night, perfect conditions you might think.

But it was cold, so bitterly, finger- and toe-numbingly cold, and there’s not a lot of protection from the wind chill at the make-

shift arena that is AMI Stadium.

The food isn’t flash, the beer isn’t either, and both cost a whole lot, that’s if you ever actually get to the counter.

Compare that to sitting in supreme comfort at home, beers in the fridge, snacks at the ready, toilet facilities readily available, and warmth. Lots of warmth.

For so many, and that’s including the likes of Crusader icon Grizz Wyllie, who this week said he hadn’t ventured to the park at all this season, it’s a no-brainer.

Add to that the clubs and pubs showing the action on massive screens, no poles and girders in the way, close-ups and replays of all the good bits – it’s a wonder they even got their 10,000 brave and hardy souls to turn out.

For many the instant answer is a brand spanking new stadium, with a nice roof to cover the fans when it rains and snows – but that’s a far too simplistic solution.

or two little issues there.

For those with short memories, a major natural disaster occurred in the city just a few short years ago, and with our tiny population, we simply cannot cope with such a thing in the same way the Chinese and Japanese can.

The Christchurch City Council still has a long way to go before almost anything in their fair city can be termed ‘normal’ again, just try driving around the inner city to get proof of that.

And would they expect fans to turn up anyway? If nobody goes, building a bigger stadium would appear to be a nonsensical solution. And it’ll still be mid-winter Christchurch cold.

Like it or not, rugby is on the decline. Count the number of

senior teams in the local competition – there’s five. That’s half, or even a third, of what we’ve had in the not-so-recent past.

Throw in the glut of rugby yearround.

The ridiculously-formatted Super Rugby competition seems to go on forever, having to stop just when it was gaining momentum so the internationals get to play.

The South Africans are playing in the glorious afternoon sunshine, and getting the crowds back. Why aren’t we?

Oh yeah, Sky TV holds the whip hand there, we have to play in the freezing cold at night, dew making handling difficult, with nobody in the stands because folks in the northern hemisphere want to watch it at a nice time on the box.

And it’s Sky who supply the money, so the rugby union apparently remains quite happy to watch their numbers going down the tube, so long as they get the dosh.

In other words, don’t expect change anytime soon.

Joseph Parker’s promoter believes Wladimir Klitschko’s decision to retire from professional boxing rather than fight Anthony Joshua a second time will help clear the way for his man to unify the world heavyweight titles.

Klitschko’s defeat by Joshua at Wembley in April must be considered as one of the best heavyweight bouts in a generation, and a re-match – written into the Ukraine’s contract – would have earned both men an enormous amount of money.

The purse for their fight, an epic in which both men were knocked down only for the Englishman to win with an 11th-round knockout, was $40 million.

Now Joshua is eyeing other opponents, most notably Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev, and his own path has been made easier by the retirement of the 40-year-old Klitschko.

Should Joshua, the WBA, IBF and IBO champion, and New Zealander Parker, the WBO holder, remain undefeated this year then a fight between the pair is possible in the United Kingdom as early as April.

Previously it had been hinted that the pair could meet in the ring later next year – perhaps August.

Parker’s next fight, the second defence of his title, is against Hughie Fury in Manchester on September 23.

“We want to unify, it’s not just about holding on to one belt ... and with Klitschko retiring it speeds up that process,” David Higgins said.

“It’s conceivable that, as long as both guys keep winning, Joe and Joshua could collide in a stadium as big as Wembley as soon as April next year.

“There are also interesting opportunities around the world – there are guys like [Alexander] Povetkin in Russia and there’s a Japanese heavyweight [Kyotaro Fujimoto] in the top 10 and I don’t think any Japanese heavyweight has challenged for the world title so ... you could break new ground in a city like Tokyo.”

Higgins said he and Parker were not neglecting the US market, with Deontay Wilder, the current WBC champion, also in the mix.

Bob Arum, the veteran Las Vegas-based promoter with whom Duco have a close working relationship, recently signed what Higgins described as a “ground-breaking” and exciting deal with ESPN. “Joe is a pay per view star in New Zealand, at home, but he’s got work to do offshore,” Higgins said. “Our job now is to make him a pay per view star in the UK and United States, one market at a time.

The black-type efforts of both Waldorf and Joyfilly emphasised the stallion’s ability to leave early types, which came as a welcome surprise to stud co-owner Edwina Morris.

“We’re absolutely over the moon.

“We never really expected him to leave two-year-olds because he is a big son of Fastnet Rock,” she said.

“The stallion actually won his first trial as a two-year-old and then won on debut at Flemington as a two-year-old, so he is putting that bit of early speed into his progeny.”

That early pace was shown in Joyfilly’s runner-up performance in the Gr.2 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes and her third placing behind Melody Belle in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes at Awapuni earlier this year.

However, the highlight of Highly Recommended’s season was his first stakes victory when the Andrew Campbell-trained Waldorf ran away from his competition to win the Listed Ryder Stakes on Monday.

As a result of that dominant win, the phone has been ringing off the hook at Berkley Stud.

“Every day we have been getting bookings and some people are booking in more than one mare,” Morris said.

“On Wednesday night, someone booked in three mares so we have had a tremendous response, more than we thought we would get.”

This comes off the back of four strong books and Morris expected it to be more of the same in 2017.

“After his first crop, the type of his foals made people return to him and that has continued,” she said.

“They are very good natured horses.

“He’s averaged 112 mares each season since he went to stud.

“He has been very well supported.”

With glowing reports about Highly Recommended’s progeny coming in from trainers from all around the country, Morris believes the best is yet to come from the gentle-natured stallion.

“We are really excited to see his three-year-olds come out on the track,” she said.

“There are two that will be nominated for the Caulfield Guineas, including Waldorf, which is incredible.

“A win in that race would be a dream come true.”

Blizzard impresses Stakes performer Blizzard has started his latest campaign in fine fashion. The grey son of Any Suggestion looked sharp when he led all the way to beat the Group Two winner Coldplay in a 1000 metre trial at Te Teko on Tuesday.

“He went really well. I was quite surprised, I thought he would get a bit tired,” said David Browne, who trains the gelding with his wife Emma-Lee. “He’s a funny horse – he gets confused and doesn’t know whether he’s a sprinter or a stayer.

Warriors keen on Blair

By DaviD Skipwith Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has granted Adam Blair permission to negotiate with rival clubs with the Warriors favourites to sign the Kiwis captain.

The 31-year-old front-rower is under contract with the Broncos until the end of next season but has been linked to a move to the Warriors since May, while St George Illawarra are also chasing his signature.

Bennett yesterday confirmed Blair’s management have requested the club release him from the last year of his contract and the Broncos have given him the green light to shop around.

“Look, we have been asked about that and we told them (Blair’s management) to go out and have a look around and come back and talk to us.

“We will see what happens,” said Bennett.

The Broncos are understood to be willing to let the former Melbourne Storm and Wests Tigers enforcer go if he does receive an

offer of a long-term deal.

The Warriors are reportedly prepared to sign him on a fouryear contract, while it’s understood the Broncos would only be willing to make him a low-end offer when he comes off-contract at the end of 2018.

The Warriors have spots to fill in the front row with Ben Matulino leaving at the end of the season to join Wests Tigers on a three-year deal, and fellow prop and 247-game veteran Jacob Lillyman off-contract.

Whangarei-born Blair is good friends with Warriors coach and former Kiwis mentor Stephen Kearney, with the pair developing a close bond during their time together at test level and during Kearney’s time on the coaching staff at both Melbourne and Brisbane.

“At the moment he’s still contracted to the Broncos for next year, but if he gets a release from them there’s a good chance he may end up with us,” said Warriors managing director Jim Doyle.

With Shaun Johnson possibly sidelined for the rest of the NRL season with a knee injury, Foran and Lino have lined up for the Warriors in each of their past two matches against North Queensland and Cronulla.
