A local Methven couple who scooped $2 million in Saturday’s $8 million Powerball draw say the win is “like a dream come true”.

The regular Lotto players, purchased an extra Dip ticket in the ‘Must Be Won Powerball’ draw, that resulted in four lucky players sharing the $8 million jackpot.

The winning tickets were bought in Methven, Clive, Lower Hutt and Waiheke Island.

They were enjoying a quiet night at home on Saturday, when the winner decided to get out her tickets and check the winning numbers.

“As soon as I saw the numbers, I knew they weren’t my lucky numbers that I’ve been playing for over 20 years,” the winner said.

“So, I started checking my Dip ticket and saw I had lots of numbers on the same line. I knew I’d won something, but I had no idea what.

“Then I remembered it was a must be won draw and that if it rolled down, I might have won more.

Rushing online to check the news, she saw the jackpot had rolled down and that one of the winning stores was Methven SuperValue.

“I just thought, ‘oh my gosh’,” she said.

The winner’s husband described the

moment, saying his wife was “crying and shaking like a leaf”.

“I tried to work out what the matter was, but she could barely speak – I had no idea what had happened,” he said.

“When she finally managed to say that we’d won Powerball, I thought she was having a bit of fun with me – we’re just not that lucky.”

After checking the ticket quite a few times, it finally started to sink in to the winners that their lives were about to change.

Burglars hit Robbie’s again

An Ashburton restaurant has been hit by thieves for a seventh time in recent months and less than a month since it was last targeted by young offenders looking for booze.

This time the thieves chose a different access point to enter Robbie’s Bar and Bistro, however business owners Skip and Amanda Joyce suspect the same culprits may be involved.

Joyce was alerted to the break-in at 1.20am yesterday and arrived at the scene to find the thieves had scarpered with a few dozen cans of premix alcohol.

Needless to say the couple is extremely frustrated by the repeated offending which has cost them in excess of $12,000.

They have also spent thousands of dollars beefing up security to protect the business, but are running out of ideas.

“It’s starting to feel a bit personal now, I don’t know what else we can do,” Joyce said.

Witnesses described seeing two

males wearing dark clothing, with hoods up and carrying bags of alcohol running north on East Street toward King Street after gaining entry to Robbie’s by throwing a garden bench through a window. Security camera footage has also been provided to police.

“This latest break-in is number seven in almost as many months and the owners are disappointed in the group that continues to target their family restaurant and bar,” police said in a statement.

Meanwhile, police continue to investigate reports of several teens attempting to break into a vehicle parked between Wills and Cass streets at about 5am on Sunday.

The group ran off after a security guard appeared on the scene.

Ashburton’s own Georgie Sivier has confirmed herself as a rising star of the stand-up comedy world after winning a high profile competition.

The South Island RAW Comedy Quest was on Sunday, where Sivier went up against six fellow finalists from throughout the region.

“It surprised me, I didn’t expect to get anywhere with it because I have only been doing stand up for seven months,” the Ashburton Big Little Theatre Company tutor said.

She said her stand-up act is a “bit peculiar” due to the fact she wore a shark costume, which had ping pong balls for eyes. Her grandmother made it for a private family joke, out of a car seat cover.

“My grandmother is mortified because she thinks everyone will think she’s a really bad

seamstress,” Sivier said.

A former student of Big Little, Sivier is now based in Christchurch as she makes a name for herself in the world of theatre, television and comedy.

She has established the Playspace Theatre Company which has been producing a number of shows, and will soon take the two-person play Her to the Nelson Fringe Festival.

Sivier is in the play with fellow Christchurch comedian Justin White, who won the Christchurch-based Comedian Award for 2016.

Her South Island RAW performance led to her being signed with standup comedy agency Grandpa Figs.

She will now go to the national final in Auckland, where she will be the only South Islander among seven contestants competing.

“It’s terrifying,” Sivier said.

Yellow station wins best dressed award By megaN gNad

The Laser Electrical Ashburton team has taken out the competition for ‘best-dressed station’ in the weekend’s Get Coloured event.

Beating 10 other decorated stations, sponsored by local businesses, the Laser Electrical team “really went to town” on the design front, said organiser, Louise Duke.

“They had yellow laser water guns and dog throwing scoops. They made it so much fun to run through the yellow station.”

For their efforts, they won a Columbus Coffee voucher so the team can enjoy a team lunch together.

More than 800 tickets were sold for Sunday’s event at Lake Hood, with participants ranging from babies in strollers, to youngsters and teenagers, mums, dads and grandparents.

First home was 11-year-old Mason Duke, among a trio of three young runners who made short work of the 5km distance.

While final numbers are still to be tallied, ticket sales will cover the costs of putting on the event and any extra goes to CanInspire, which helps people suffering from trauma, illness and loss.

College out of mix for library?

A last-minute bid to build Ashburton’s new public library at Ashburton College is likely to be canned tomorrow by Ashburton’s district councillors.

Last month the majority, including mayor Donna Favel voted to overturn a decision made by councillors in the previous term to build the library and civic centre on one site.

Sites in the mix were Baring Square east, Eastfield and the current civic centre site in Baring Square west for a co-build of the library and civic centre.

The college site had earlier been discounted as an option for

the library but the new team of councillors wanted consultants Opus Architecture to investigate the dual site option again.

It found there was little to be gained by splitting the sites and that the college library option came with some significant disadvantages.

Reports from Opus and from council staff will be discussed at tomorrow’s council meeting and they include the recommendation that “council ceases any further exploration with the Ashburton College and Ministry of Education on the option of siting the new council library on the Ashburton College site and that the Administration & Library

Facilities Project Control Group be convened to review the status and progress of the site selection process and report back to council”.

The college option was thrown back into the mix at the request of the college’s new principal Ross Preece when he spoke during the public forum at the February council meeting. As well as the community needing a new library so too did the college.

Building one facility that met the needs of the school and the community made sense, he said.

He told councillors that the college had several million dollars in available funding and could look at using some of this to assist

the building of the new library as a joint facility. The demolition of the community pool has provided an available land area of approximately 2700m2 where the new library building could be sited.

The proposal was for the library to be based on the Riccarton Library model in Christchurch and the college’s expectation was that the facility would be owned and operated by the council on land owned by the college/Ministry of Education.

In its report Opus said that there were no funding guarantees from the ministry; the only indication of support was the provision of the land on a lease basis.

Opus found that the college option did not deliver a financial benefit for the community because the shared facility would need to be larger and therefore more expensive than a co-build.

Reaching agreement with the ministry would also involve protracted negotiations that could delay the project.

And those findings led Opus to recommend that the council proceed no further with the college site option and that the project group reconvened to review the status and progress of the current site selection.

Ashburton farmer takes helm Ashburton dairy farmer Peter Gilbert has been elected as president of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association for 2017.

Gilbert was confirmed as the president of the 155th Canterbury A&P Show in front of outgoing president Warrick James, the committee and association members.

Mr Gilbert said he was looking forward to his presidential year after a long association with Canterbury A&P. “I’ve been on the Canterbury A&P Committee since 2002 and chair of the Dairy Section since 2007,” he said.

“Now it’s my turn to take the top job and it’s a real honour to follow in the footsteps of so many great presidents before me. I absolutely love showing and I’m really looking forward to adding to the history of the association and

Peter Gilbert doing my bit for those that share my passion.”

Mr Gilbert grew up on a dairy farm in Ellesmere. He married schoolteacher Anne in the 1980s and they bought a 180-hectare dairy farm in Winchmore. Last year they added to their farming operation with a 176-hectare dairy farm in Rakaia.

Their three sons all work in

the dairy industry, with Michael running the new block at Rakaia, Nick on the Winchmore farm and Luke working for Semex New Zealand.

Mr Gilbert first began showing calves at primary school and has been showing holstein freisian cattle at Canterbury, Ellesmere and Ashburton A&P shows for nearly 40 years.

Mr Gilbert is proud that his three sons have not only inherited his passion for dairying, but also for showing: all three are senior judges for at least two different breed societies.

“It means a lot to have had my sons so heavily involved in the show with me over the years,” he said.

“Obviously youth are the future of events like ours and it’s really heartening to see so many great young people that get stuck in at the Canterbury A&P Show, espe-

cially in the cattle section.”

Overseeing the family business along with his presidential duties will make for a busy year for Gilbert with board meetings, sub-committee meetings, general committee meetings, association events and working bees all on the cards over the next 12 months.

Also elected at the recent annual general meeting were Tim Black (Timaru) as senior vicepresident and Chris Herbert (Amberley) as junior vice-president.

The 2017 Canterbury A&P Show will be held on Wednesday 15 to Friday 17 November at Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch.

It’s the largest A&P Show in the country attracting 100,000 people, over 6500 livestock, equestrian and feature competition entries and over 500 trade exhibitors.

Holiday programme off to Methven again

The plans have been laid and the YMCA’s Breakaway Holiday Programme is ready to go.

The free programme began in January 2015 and has operated at capacity every time, said YMCA manager of community and youth development, Poppy Cooper-Vear.

Participants this year will try their hand at bubble football, archery, mountain biking, an Easter scavenger hunt and in the past have taken part in an amazing race style event.

“We base the programme in Methven and have really found the community gets behind the event,” Cooper-Vear said.

In the past challenges such as milking a goat and drinking the milk have been set, to dressing up and going for a ride in a sulky at the Methven Racecourse.

One killed in crash One person has died in a crash between a car and truck near Matamata yesterday. The accident happened at the intersection of State Highway 27 and Wairere Road, in Waharoa at 4.45pm. The driver of one of the vehicles died at the scene, police said. The other driver was uninjured. Westland CEO out Westland District Council chief executive Tanya Winter has been suspended after allegations of misconduct related to wastewater contracts. Winter had previously taken a personal grievance claim against the council. Winter will be replaced temporarily from today by former chief executive Robin Reeves, whom she took over from in 2012 after ongoing complaints about the state of the council affairs. Westland Mayor Bruce Smith said the decision to suspend Winter, effective from 9am yesterday, related to her allegedly withholding from the councillors and mayor, information about possible fraudulent activity.

Mystery solved A car at the bottom of Nelson Harbour may belong to a Nelson teenager missing since 2010. Leo Lipp-Neighbours was last seen on January 24 seven years ago driving away from his home in a valley suburb near the Nelson coast in a distinctive orange station wagon.

Police take tough line on poachers Poaching will be a focus for Canterbury police this year as the season of the deer roar approaches.

Acting Inspector Paul Reeves said police wanted to ensure the hunting is legal, and there would be a number of operations run throughout the district during the roar.

“We want to ensure hunters en-

joy themselves and come home safely,” he said.

And poaching penalties had increased.

“Last year there were concerns raised by residents and land owners in Lees Valley which resulted in a number of prosecutions,” he said.

The maximum penalty for illegal

hunting was two years’ imprisonment and a $100,000 fine.

“Hunters need to ensure they obtain permission from the land owner or permits from the Department of Conservation.”

He reminded hunters to follow the Arms Code and its seven basic rules of safe firearms handling.

Mufti-day gives a welcome boost

Ashburton College students have used the power of a mufti-day to show their support for the firefighters that battled the Port Hills fire in February.

Through running the mufti-day, the school’s student executive raised $1100 that was donated to the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades’ Association.

On hand to collect the donation, was association president, Warren Maslin.

“The public support we received was great, and to receive this extra boost from the College is just fantastic,” he said.

“We volunteer as a means to make a difference and the support we receive means a lot.

“I also want to thank the employers of all the volunteer firefighters as they also make a huge sacrifice.”

Maslin said the funds would be used to host a function as a means to thank those who helped battle the fires.

Cylone Debbie is unleashing a deluge on areas of the North Island.

Debbie causing havoc in NZ Cyclone Debbie has started to hammer the central North Island, forcing a school evacuation and road closures in Taranaki.

Almost the entire North Island is expected to get torrential rain, but central regions will be particularly bad.

Some areas are expected to get three times April’s normal rainfall in just 48 hours.

The northeast of the South Island could also get a soaking.

South Taranaki is already having problems, with the Waitotara River rapidly rising.

Ngamatapouri School has been closed and evacuated, and Waitotara Valley Road is closed.

Farmers in low lying areas nearby are being warned to be prepared to move stock to higher ground.

Locals are being told to keep survival items and a getaway kit nearby.

South Taranaki District Council, Taranaki Regional Council, and Taranaki Civil Defence are all monitoring the system, and say they’ll keep locals informed.

More heavy rain was forecast for Taranaki’s eastern hill country last night.

In Manawatu, motorists are being warned to avoid Manawatu Gorge as there have been slips.

Caution will still be needed if taking Saddle Road as an alternate route, as it’s also prone to slips.

In Hawke’s Bay, they’re closely monitoring river levels.

Heavy rain has started over the past 24 hours, with Wairoa getting 63mm, Takapau Plains 52mm, Napier 44mm and Hastings 27mm.

Up to 150mm more could be on the cards for some coastal hill areas to the south of Cape Kidnappers and the ranges.

A Kiwi mother who died in a river tragedy was found “holding a child” in the submerged vehicle, police say.

New Zealander Stephanie King, 43, of Bilambil, died trying to save her children 7-year-old son Jacob and her 11-year-old daughter Ella-Jane after their car careered off the road into the flooded Tweed River on Monday.

Tweed Byron LAC Chief Inspector Mick Dempsey told News Corp King was found “holding a child” and that he has no doubt “she was a hero”.

Asked about how 8-year old Chloe managed to escape, Dempsey suggested King helped her escape.

Police confirmed the bodies of the three have been found in a submerged vehicle, about 5m from the riverbank.

The mother and children have been remembered as a “perfect normal family”, by devastated friends.

The close-knit northern NSW community has already reached out to support King’s partner, Matt Kabealo, a chef at the Kingscliff Bowling Club.

A

Methven couple who became $2 million richer over the weekend are currently experiencing the elation that the thousands playing Lotto each Saturday night can only dream of.

The lucky winning ticket was purchased from Methven SuperValue as part of the $8 million Powerball draw.

The regular Lotto players, purchased an extra Dip ticket in the ‘Must Be Won Powerball’ draw, and in that moment, their lives changed.

Many people are telling us that drivers are ignoring the ‘mergelike-a-zip’ rule and are using the dual lanes as an opportunity to overtake other vehicles and there have been many near misses in this area.

People are also concerned that when traffic volumes are high vehicles stopped at the light are backing up across the railway lines to the north and onto the Ashburton River bridge in the south.

An Ashburton District Council spokesperson said they had been in discussion with affected landowners.

Becoming a vibrant, welcoming district M

y name is Sophie-Claire and I am the current coordinator of the Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network.

As a newcomer to Ashburton myself, having moved to New Zealand from Mauritius in 2011 and then from Christchurch to Ashburton in 2014, I too sought support from the Newcomers’ Network and I, like many others, have experienced first-hand the difference that being empowered and supported made, as I found my feet in a new community.

When the possibility to join the Newcomers’ Network came up, I saw in it an opportunity to not only make the most of my degree, but also become an active voice in a conversation I think is very important for us to have if we want to understand who we are in relation to others and build a cohesive and united Ashburton.

The Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network has grown considerably since its days as an informal social network back in 2002.

Its journey has been successful, thanks to a group of committed individuals who hold the well-being of our community at heart, and with the support of

the Ashburton District Council.

Together we have managed to respond to the changing needs of a rapidly growing migrant and newcomer community in Ashburton which is itself a community that is changing and evolving very rapidly.

Did you know that we are the fifth fastest growing community in New Zealand and that migrants and newcomers account for a third of that growth?

This tells me that our community is doing something right to welcome new members and make them feel at home and I can tell you that the rest of New Zealand is beginning to take notice too.

Last month, I partnered with the Ashburton Museum to host a live audience radio show called Speak Up – Korerotia; New Zealand’s only human rightsfocused radio show.

We were asked two questions by a member of the audience

and by our mayor Donna Favel.

“What more can we do to welcome newcomers into our community?” and “where do we see Ashburton as a community five years from now?”.

These questions got us all thinking and I thought I would address them in my first column.

I have no doubt that each and every one of us knows someone who is new to our town.

Once, someone told me that they didn’t think it required a lot to connect with another person - a smile, taking interest in how they are doing and a good conversation were enough. I agree.

These simple things are expressions of our ability as human beings to show empathy towards one another.

Perhaps we can just start there.

We have achieved so much already but there is so much more we can do.

I think that one of our longterm goals as a community should be to go beyond welcoming newcomers and to embrace them into the very fabric of our community, at every level of our society.

The good thing is that we have already started doing it! We have a gender and culturallydiverse council where a range

of perspectives are represented and new members of our community are thriving here in many sectors.

Blast closes Russian subway A bomb blast tore through a subway train deep under Russia’s second-largest city Monday, killing 11 people and wounding more than 40 in a chaotic scene that left victims sprawled on a smoky platform.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which came while President Vladimir Putin was visiting the city, his hometown.

News reports initially said police were searching for two suspects, and Russian state television showed a photo of one suspect wearing what appeared to be a skullcap characteristic of Russia’s Muslim regions. However, the Interfax news agency later cited unspecified sources as saying police now suspect the blast was the work of a suicide bomber linked to radical Islamists.

The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said it was looking for the “perpetrators and organizers of the terror attack.”

St Petersburg, a major tourist destination famed for its imperial palaces and lavish art museums, had been spared previous attacks.

Rockhampton falling to floods Parts of Rockhampton are starting to go under, while final preparations are being put in place in other areas, as the Fitzroy River slowly climbs to its predicted peak of nine metres.

The river had risen to just under 7.8m by midday yesterday, and is now expected to peak tomorrow morning, when about 3000 homes and businesses will be affected.

Low-lying suburbs were due to be inundated but authorities have installed flood mitigation measures, including floodgates on stormwater

drains, as well as a new system of temporary levees, on the north side of the river around Beserker.

However, even that has its drawbacks, with the levees running down the middle of suburban streets, meaning only one side is protected.

For 27 years Barb Reid has lived in her Berserker house, which is now on the wrong side of the temporary levees.

She said the area regularly floods, either from flash flooding or when the river rises.

Reid rode out Cyclone Marcia in 2015 in her bathroom,

an event which she said was more concerning.

“We’re used to floods in Rockhampton, it’s the cyclones we don’t like, we’ll take a flood any time.”

She said she was concerned about what effect the levees would have on the flood level but said they had been in contact with authorities and had been assured everything would be fine.

The water is expected to stay up over the weekend after it peaks, before eventually subsiding by next week.

Spark New Zealand says its hostile 80 cents-a-share offer for TeamTalk is final and it won’t waive a condition that the proposal will lapse if the target company sells its Farmside internet services provider to rival Vodafone New Zealand.

TeamTalk shareholders are to vote on the $10 million sale of Farmside to Vodafone on April 12, a deal that would help cut debt at the telecommunication minnow. Vodafone would buy 70 per cent of Farmside with an option to pick up the rest any time in the next three years for a further $3m.

Contact Energy is beginning the massive task of shifting more than half its customers off the Fly Buys rewards scheme with the enticement of up to 50 cents a litre off fuel bought from BP and Caltex petrol stations by linking electricity bills to the AA Smartfuels reward scheme.

Contact and Fly Buys ended their 16-year partnership at the beginning of this month amidst a major shake-up in the loyalty rewards scheme market, which is dominated by Fly Buys, the Air New Zealand Airpoints programme and the more recently arrived and fast-growing AA Smartfuels scheme.

Cookie Time founder Michael Mayell is shifting his focus from sugar and chocolate to wheatgrass and barley, launching healthfood company Nutrient Rescue.

Mayell founded the Cookie Time empire, famous for its biscuits, bars and Christmas cookies, in 1983.

The company grew to a multi-million dollar business, but Mayell said a health scare made him reassess his diet.

Cauli up a storm this autumn C

1-2 t turmeric 2-3 curry leaves Chopped coriander leaves to garnish Salt to taste

auliflower is readily available and affordable right now. Make the most of this versatile vegetable this autumn, it’s packed full of goodness and tastes great.

■ Place cauliflower in a heat-proof bowl and cover with boiling water, then set aside.

■ Heat a splash of vegetable oil in a heavy skillet, add cumin and mustard seeds and cook until popping.

■ Add the curry leaves and ginger, stir and add onions and garlic.

Fry until tender and onions are changing colour.

■ Add spices and ginger and fry off for a few minutes.

■ Add tomatoes and cook down to reduce by about a third ■ Add drained cauliflower pieces, cover and continue to cook until tender, sprinkling on more water if required.

■ Serve with roti or similar Indian flatbread.

Roasted cauliflower 1 large head of cauliflower, broken into florets 2-3T butter, melted 2T minced garlic Salt and freshly-ground black pepper to taste ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Line a roasting dish with baking paper.

■ Mix garlic and butter and brush each floret with the mix and place into roasting dish.

■ Roast for about 30 minutes, turn cauliflower pieces and continue cooking until tender, about 10-15 minutes.

Cauliflower cheese bake.

Nutty cauliflower salad This is a great way to use up leftover roasted cauliflower, alter the recipe to suit your tastes and needs.

Mashed cauliflower A great substitute for mashed potato

1/2 head cauliflower, broken into florets 1T butter 1/4 C pinenuts 1/4 C walnuts 1/2 C roughly chopped dates 2 cloves of crushed garlic ■ If using raw cauliflower roast as described in recipe above.

■ Heat butter in a heavy-based pan and roast nuts until golden and fragrant.

■ Add dates and garlic and cook for about three minutes or until dates soften.

■ Drizzle nut mixture over the cauliflower and toss to coat.

■ Serve warm or cold.

1 head of cauliflower, cut into pieces 1 onion, peeled and chopped 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced 2T unsweetened plain yoghurt 1/2 C grated cheese (optional) Salt and freshly-ground black pepper to taste.

Flat leaf parsley, chives or coriander leaf to serve.

■ Cook garlic and onion in a frypan with a splash of vegetable oil until translucent.

■ Place all ingredients in a blender bowl, season to taste and blend until smooth. Serve sprinkled with freshly-chopped herbs.

■ Can then be baked in an oven dish with a grated cheese topping if desired.

Cauliflower curry 3C cauliflower florets 1C chopped onion 3 gloves of garlic, finely chopped 1 can of chopped tomatoes 1T grated ginger 1t cumin seeds 1t chilli powder or chopped fresh red chilli 1t yellow mustard seeds 2t garam masala

Cauliflower and coconut soup 1 head of cauliflower, cut into pieces 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 1T butter 2 cloves of garlic, chopped 1 large potato, chopped 3C chicken or vegetable stock 1/2 can coconut cream 1/2 t ground nutmeg Salt and pepper to taste Chopped fresh herbs to garnish ■ Heat butter in a deep saucepan, add onion and garlic, and cook until soft.

■ Add the cauliflower pieces and chicken stock. Cover and cook on low heat until the cauliflower is tender – about 20 minutes.

■ Add the coconut cream and nutmeg and heat through.

■ Cool slightly and blend mixture into a smooth puree.

■ Season with salt and pepper.

■ Serve and garnish with herbs.

■ Serve with fresh crusty bread.

Cauliflower cheese bake 1 medium sized cauliflower, broken into florets 60g butter 60g plain flour 450ml milk Salt and pepper to taste 60g parmesan cheese, grated 50g tasty cheddar cheese, grated ■ Preheat the oven to 220°C. ■ Place cauliflower in a large pot with enough water to cover and boil for 10 minutes. Don’t overcook as this will continue to cook in the oven. Drain.

■ Melt the butter over a low heat in a small saucepan and add the flour. Use a whisk or wooden spoon to mix them together.

Cook for a few minutes until texture changes and the mix becomes slightly crumbly.

■ Pour in a little of the milk stirring continuously. As the mixture thickens, add more milk, continuing to stir. Continue this step until the sauce has thickened to the desired consistency.

■ Add the grated parmesan and stir well. Season with salt and black pepper.

■ Place the drained cauliflower in an oven-proof dish. Pour the cheese sauce over the cauliflower, making sure it is covered.

Sprinkle over the grated cheddar cheese and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the cheese has turned golden brown.

■ Great as a side dish with a roast or on its own served with crusty bread.

Midweek Munchies ■ In a large saucepan, cover cauliflower with water, put the lid on and boil on a medium to low heat setting until tender (about 10-15 minutes). Remove from heat and allow to cook for at least 5 minutes.

Kick in the guts for tradition T

If it’s been the desire all along, wouldn’t it be better for everyone if they just came out and said it straight up and not drag and lead clubs and organisations on through a painfully long process when it could be answered and solved within a matter of days?

hey say you shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds you, but you could forgive the Ashburton Trotting Club if they were feeling a bit snappy with the organisation in charge of all three codes of racing in New Zealand, the New Zealand Racing Board.

It’s been a pretty tumultuous few months for the local club as they have sat and awaited a decision that has, ultimately, been out of their control from the outset, despite what might be portrayed otherwise.

We ran a story this week about the New Zealand Racing Board’s decision to axe the Boxing Day races here in Ashburton.

It’s a kick in the guts for the once-rich harness racing region of Mid Canterbury that things have become so dire that the flagship race meeting for the Ashburton Trotting Club is facing the chop.

The New Zealand Racing Board are giving the Ashburton Trotting Club and Harness Racing New Zealand due diligence by appearing to be sympathetic to their plea not to change the

Boxing Day in Ashburton has been a tradition for as long as anyone really cares to remember.

You couldn’t put an exact number on how many people from this region can say they have attended the iconic event other the years, because pretty much everyone has at least once.

The stricter liquor licensing laws have certainly not helped, and the Ashburton Trotting Club has done everything in their power to make that transition as normal as possible for its racegoers, but at the end of the day the long arm of the fun police can be quite forceful when it wants to be.

So we’ve seen the last, for now, of Boxing Day Races at Ashburton, but where to next?

The most likely scenario seems to be a meeting on Christmas Eve, which with Christmas falling on a Sunday this year would work in well for everyone looking for something relaxing to do before the big day on December 25.

Maybe, it’s the case of saying farewell to an old tradition and welcoming in a new one?

Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary still expects his father Ivan to play a key role in his career, even as head coach of Wests Tigers.

Ivan Cleary signed a three-and-a-half year deal to coach the Tigers until the end of the 2020 season on Monday, after a fortnight of speculation.

Cleary last coached at the Panthers in 2015, and his closest interaction with NRL coaching has been with his own son in a non-official capacity.

And Nathan said he didn’t expect that to change for the rest of 2017 and beyond.

“He’s always said that he will help me out, and I’m really appreciative of that,” Nathan Cleary said.

“Just because he’s coaching another team doesn’t Ivan Cleary mean he can’t help me out with little aspects of my game.”

The up-and-coming star was in Penrith’s under-20s team when his father was sacked as Panthers coach at the end of 2015.

He has never been officially led by his father in the NRL, and said they last combined as a player and coach combination in under-six soccer.

“He was pretty ordinary actually I think,” the 19-year-old joked.

The pair also insist they won’t be reunited in an official sense any time soon.

Ivan laughed off suggestions he would pursue Nathan’s signature at the Tigers, once he is offcontract at the end of 2019.

“I’m very happy here at the moment and it hasn’t really crossed my mind,” Nathan reiterated yesterday.

The Panthers halfback still lives at home with his family.

Microphones picked up Arnold telling Josh Brilliante and Brandon O’Neill to get yellow cards in the match against Melbourne City on Saturday. While the tactic has been banned in some European leagues, the actions don’t break any domestic laws, Football Federation Australia said.

Expensive mask Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is in trouble with his club after pulling a mask stunt in the Ruhr derby against Schalke.

Aubameyang pulled on a mask after scoring in the 1-1 draw Saturday, as he’s done before with Spiderman and Batman masks, but this time it was the mask he had worn as The Masked Finisher for a Nike commercial. According to German daily Bild, the celebration will result in a 50,000 euro ($NZ76,000) fine.

Cronk on the move Test halfback Cooper Cronk has set the scene for a bidding war among Sydney NRL clubs for his signature after announcing he’ll leave Melbourne at the end of the season.

ABs ‘exploring options’ The French Rugby Federation has reportedly expressed interest in hosting a midweek fixture against the All Blacks in November.

According to French newspaper Midi-Olympique, French rugby boss Bernard Laporte is close to finalising a deal with New Zealand Rugby which would see the All Blacks play a fifth match on their European tour at the end of the year.

The match would take place on Tuesday, November 14, three days after France’s scheduled clash against the All Blacks in Paris, and would reportedly be set outside of the French capital, with the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille emerging as the likely venue.

The FFR were originally keen to host a second match against Steve Hansen’s side on Saturday November 4, but that date has already been taken up by the All Blacks’ clash against the Barbarians at Twickenham as a celebratory fixture for NZR’s 125th anniversary.

The All Blacks may have an extra game in Europe this year.

A fifth match on tour would add a massive amount of pressure on the All Blacks, who would still have to face an impressive Scotland side in Edinburgh on November 18 before finishing their season against Wales in Cardiff a week later.

All these matches would come at the end of a season where the national side would have already played a gruelling test series against the British and Irish Lions in addition to a potential warm-up test match against Samoa in June, as well as partaking

in the annual Rugby Championship competition against Australia, South Africa and Argentina.

Although an additional match in an already prolonged season for the All Blacks would place a lot of physical and mental pressure on members of the squad, it could give Hansen an opportunity to blood newcomers and test the depth of his player pool as he eyes a third consecutive World Cup title in 2019.

End-of-year tours usually allow young players to showcase their talent, and the match against the Barbarians and a second fixture against France would give Hansen plenty of opportunities to give his unproven players a chance to show their worth halfway through the World Cup cycle.

A spokesperson for New Zealand Rugby said the final schedule for the end of the year tour was yet to be confirmed and that a number of options were being explored.

Faumuina has plenty to occupy his mind Charlie Faumuina has work on his mind. And labour.

The first is the task he and his fellow Blues forwards face against the Highlanders in Dunedin on Saturday, the second the one his wife Rachelle is facing regarding the birth of their third child.

Rachelle is due to give birth on Thursday, so Charlie is hopeful the latest addition to the Faumuina family arrives on time or either slightly before or shortly after.

He said he hasn’t spoken to coach Tana Umaga in any detail but he is hoping to be given the flexibility to fly south on the day of the game if necessary.

Blacks against Scotland in Edinburgh when Leilani-Grace, a sister for the now 4-year-old Riley, arrived.

This time he hopes to be present if possible.

“I’m sure I could go down on game day and come back on the first flight out of Dunedin in the morning if I have to, but we’ll see how it goes,” Faumuina said.

The Blues will need all the quality they can get if they are to beat a team who got the better of them at Eden Park four weeks ago in round three.

And while many of Umaga’s men were guilty of either throwing the ball away via a daft pass or losing in contact during their scrappy recent win over the

Charlie Faumuina Force, it is the pack who need to take a bigger responsibility at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

“It’s about doing our job for the whole 80 minutes,” Faumuina said. “The Highlanders back themselves as the battlers and go all day and I think that’s an attitude we want to take – to try to

out-work them this weekend.”

One of the qualities of the three leading Kiwi teams the Crusaders, Chiefs and Hurricanes is the way they are playing as a collective, and in particularly their packs.

For whatever reason, the Blues haven’t managed to find that connectivity and what better time than to do it against a Highlanders team one point and one place below them on the table.

In Faumuina, Patrick Tuipulotu, Jerome Kaino and Akira Ioane they have big and powerful ball runners; the key is in getting more out of them in the hope that the Blues’ backline can capitalise.

“We have some big boys who can be direct – we must use that to our advantage.”

Proctor making impact It may be premature to say that Matt Proctor has entered the frame for the All Blacks selection. But the 24-year-old Hurricanes and Maori All Blacks centre is presenting a strong case for being one of the biggest improvers on the New Zealand Super Rugby stage. Against the Reds on Saturday, Proctor showed his cutting edge on attack, running for 103m and making three breaks. Now he has lifted his output, and has missed just three of 42 tackles, making him the most accurate defender of the New Zealand Super Rugby centres this season.

Savea ruled out The NSW Waratahs can look forward to facing the Hurricanes without destructive forward Ardie Savea, but the defending champions are expected to welcome back three other powerhouse ball carriers.

Arguably the form forward through the first six rounds, Savea is unlikely to face the Waratahs in Wellington on Friday because of a calf injury. More good news for the defending champions this week is the likely availability of captain Dane Coles, winger Cory Jane and lock Vaea Fifita.

Stransky calls for cuts A Springbok great has called for two of his country’s Super Rugby franchises to be cut. It’s being reported Sanzaar want to cut the number of teams in the competition back to 15. The Western Force are thought to be on the block and question marks hang over the Brumbies and Rebels. However former Springbok Joel Stransky said the Kings and Cheetahs should be the first to go. “I’m hoping we lose the Kings, and to be fair, the Cheetahs are the other team who need to go,” he said.

NBA season hots up

Snell’s gift to nation

With just over a week left in the NBA regular season, there’s still a ton to be decided before the playoff field is set.

In the East, four spots remain unclaimed.

In the West, two are up for grabs. And while some seedings look wrapped up, none are officially clinched.

Want drama? It’s not hard to find.

“To be in a competition like this, it’s a privilege,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Yesterday was a most-needed day for most of the NBA to catch its breath.

The league always tries to avoid scheduling games on the day of the NCAA men’s championship game and would have done so this year if a PortlandMinnesota game didn’t have to be postponed because of floor conditions earlier this season.

Things pick up in earnest again today.

So to get ready for the final nine days of the season, here’s a primer on playoff chases.

Two of athletics great Sir Peter Snell’s Olympic gold medals, as well as a running shoe he wore to victory, are going on display at Te Papa.

They are among 14 items Snell is donating to the national museum in Wellington.

The golds are those he won for the 800m race in Rome in 1960 and in Tokyo four years later.

The shoe was made by coach Arthur Lydiard and was worn during the race in Rome.

Snell, 78, claimed three Olympic titles, the third in the 1500m in Toyko.

Te Papa says Snell and his family will be welcomed to Te Papa’s marae on April 18.

A special display will then be opened featuring the two Olympic medals and the shoe, which will remain on show until July 23.

All 14 items will be part of New Zealand’s national history collection in perpetuity.

Te Papa chief executive Rick Ellis says the museum is humbled

by Snell’s decision to make the donation.

As well as seeing these items up close and personal in the museum, visitors will have Snell’s story brought to life with video and digital storytelling, he says.

“Every kid in New Zealand will be able to get a taste of the determination and grit that took Sir Peter Snell to the top.”

Last June, Te Papa bid at auction for a singlet thought to be that worn by Snell at the Tokyo Olympics.

The singlet was withdrawn from sale after the museum raised doubts about its authenticity.

Aussie Super Rugby players ‘not cocky enough’ This is a not a cry normally associated with Australian sport – but a leading light says their rugby players aren’t cocky enough.

In a very un-Australian moment, commentator Rod Kafer believes an inferiority complex is at the heart of a disastrous run of trans-Tasman results.

Advice is flowing thick and fast for beleaguered Australian rugby, and Brumbies icon Kafer has joined the fray urging it to stop “aping” New Zealand.

Kafer also believes that constant put downs of the Australian teams have been seeping

into the players’ psychology.

“All the players hear is how far ahead the Kiwi teams are and eventually, as resistant as you try to be as a player, those things over time seep in, through the smallest cracks in a player’s psyche,” Kafer said.

“You get the sense that our decline in performance, particularly against New Zealand sides, has unfortunately been consistent over the past three years.

“It’s almost in the Australian psyche now, that deferment to New Zealand, and it becomes self-perpetuating.”

The former test inside back, a key mastermind in the Brumbies’ great years, said Australia had to find its own way of doing things.

“There is absolute merit in what our administrators and coaches have been doing with all their work looking at best practice in New Zealand, but the process now needs to take everything we have learned and make it our own,” Kafer said.

“There is a fantastic template for success across the ditch that we should be learning from but you can’t pick up something from

another organisation, drop it in here and expect it to work with no further tailoring.”

Kafer supported cutting the number of Australian Super teams from five to four.

But he was baffled as to why the threat of fewer jobs being available for players wasn’t inspiring them to play better.

Kafer said: “Of course there’s going to be uncertainty around the competition but if anything that gives the players opportunities to be inspired and to play as if their lives depended on it.”

El Pescado right on track El Pescado is making encouraging progress toward his autumn goal.

The Tauranga talent went close a couple of times during his last preparation and, following a break, he showed he had come back in good order with a laststart third in the Listed Flying Handicap at Awapuni.

“I was happy with him, he went to the line pretty well and he worked nicely again this morning,” trainer Stuart Manning said.

“His main aim this time up is the Easter Stakes.”

The Gr.2 Manco-sponsored set weights and penalties feature will be run at Ellerslie on April 22.

Waterhouse, Bott at centre of inquiry Trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott are at the centre of a stewards investigation for substituting horses in public gallops on the course proper at Randwick.

Racing NSW stewards began the investigation after being alerted three horses from their stable on a running sheet for Tuesday’s Breakfast with the Stars were in fact not the ones that galloped.

The course proper gallops were restricted to horses nominated to race in the Championship races at Randwick on Saturday and were filmed by Sky Racing.

urday’s TJ Smith Stakes was one of those listed to gallop when in fact the less well-performed Sort After wore her colours in the work-out.

Rules hot topic at Augusta The start of Masters week has been slightly overshadowed by the drama involving Lexi Thompson in the first women’s major of the year.

World number eight Rickie Fowler has been pressed in his media conference to open the week at Augusta National on the incident that curtailed Thompson’s push towards her second ANA Inspiration title.

The golfing world is abuzz with debate over whether the fourstroke penalty handed down to Thompson in the final round was justified.

The incident of Thompson placing her ball slightly away from where she marked it actually occurred in the third round, but only came to light about a third of the way through the final round when a fan emailed the LPGA Tour to inform them.

It meant Thompson was handed a two-stroke penalty for the infraction and an additional twostroke penalty for signing an incorrect scorecard.

She lost in an eventual playoff to Korea’s So Yeon Ryu. When asked about his take on the incident, Fowler was set in the view that something needs to change and fast.

“We’ve seen some stuff in the past year that’s not making the game look very good at all,” he began.

“There’s no other sport where people can call or email officials regarding an issue.

“It was really unfortunate to see how it was handled.

“Coming 24 hours after the fact, things should be handled the day of. Once you sign your scorecard, that’s kind of it.”

Fowler continued with a fairly frank view that the practice of fans influencing a rule needed to be stopped.

“There’s no question it should be ended.

Two-metre Peter retires Former Black Cap opener Peter Fulton has announced his retirement from provincial cricket 16 years after making his first class debut for Canterbury. Fulton, 38, made his Canterbury debut in the last match of the 2000-01 season and has been part of Canterbury side’s since racking up a number of records along the way. He’s the province’s most capped first class player having played 121 games and has scored more first class runs than any other Cantab with 8719. He played 23 tests, his last against the West Indies in 2014.

Rep cricketer banned Cricketer Adam King has been banned for two years for the possession and use of banned substances.

The Sports Tribunal of New Zealand issued the penalty in response to offending which occurred over a 10-month period in 2014 and 2015.

King, a medium-fast bowler, played for Horowhenua-Kapiti in 2013 and 2016. Drug Free Sport New Zealand received information from Medsafe that King had ordered online two anabolic steroids in 2014 and two hormones in 2015.

New coach for Canes Former South African Test player Gary Kirsten has been signed for two seasons to coach the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League.

The 49-year-old former opening batsman, who previously coached India’s 2011 World Cup-winning side, was named as the successor to Damien Wright. Cricket Tasmania is still searching for a head coach after Dan Marsh was sacked when the Tigers finished last in the Sheffield Shield.

Black Caps all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme has been given a late call-up to the Indian Premier League. The Kolkata Knight Riders have signed de Grandhomme as a replacement for West Indian Andre Russell, who is currently serving out a one-year ban for a dopingcode violation. By Evin PriEst World No.9 Adam Scott is backing himself to win a second Masters title after seeing signs of his ball-striking best during practice rounds at Augusta National.

Long revered as one of golf’s premier ball-strikers, the 2013 Masters champion has struggled from tee to green this year – ranking 123rd on the US PGA Tour in driving accuracy and 193rd in proximity to the hole on approach shots.

However, the 36-year-old has found career-best form on and around the greens – his scrambling efforts have seen him grind out a top-10 finish among four top-25s in five US PGA Tour events this season.

While reasonably solid, Scott’s 2017 results pale in comparison to world No.1 Dustin Johnson – whose three victories in as many starts have him as the heavy Masters favourite – as well as this season’s other three-time winners, world No.4 Hideki Matsuyama and world No.7 Justin Thomas.

But Scott believes form can go out the window, in both directions, when it comes to golf’s four big dances.

“I’m always trying to peak (for Augusta).

“How much do I have to worry about (past results)? I don’t, really,” said Scott. “‘DJ’ looks phenomenal, but there are so many guys capable of playing at a high level and I certainly feel I can go into (the Masters) with a lot of confidence as well.”

Sport Moyes contrite Sunderland boss David Moyes does not fear for his job and never considered resigning over his “slap” remark to a female reporter. The Football Association confirmed it would ask for an explanation of Moyes’ comments to reporter Vicki Sparks. The Scot made a public apology, but vowed to carry on in his post. A video captured the manager reacting to a question he did not like, saying: “You were just getting a wee bit naughty at the end there, so just watch yourself. You still might get a slap even though you’re a woman.

Champions on the greens

Five Mid Canterbury bowlers were crowned Champion of Champions on the Methven bowling green on Sunday.

The final of the championship events for the bowling season, the Champion of Champions singles is an always hotly contest affair and Sunday’s matchups were no different.

In the senior men’s competition it was Methven’s Brent Mayson who emerged on top of his peers.

Mayson beat Hampstead’s Neville Bensdorp in the semi-final 21-10 to advance through to the final while Rakaia’s Ian Kaye

won his match against Ashburton MSA’s Tony Inwood 21-18.

After playing in the final of the Champion of Champions pairs seven days earlier, and coming up short, Kaye was out to get himself a title, but unfortunately struck an in-form Mayson who plays the Methven green well and he controlled the match before racing out to win 21-12.

Rakaia did manage to get one back though when Laurel Chaney claimed honours in the senior women’s title.

She beat Heather Goodall of Ashburton 21-18 in one semifinal while Rosemary Bennett beat Melva Middleton 21-11 in the other.

Bennett, who was shooting for her second title in the space of seven days after winning the pairs last week, had to settle for second place as Chaney controlled the match and won 2116.

In the junior men’s division, Ashburton picked up the victory through Brenton Donaldson who beat Allenton’s Denys McEvedy 21-4 in the final.

Donaldson was in hot form, waltzing through to the final courtesy of a 21-4 win over Linton Muir of the Ashburton MSA while McEvedy beat Gary Brown from Hinds 21-12.

The junior women’s title went to Rose Johnston of Allenton

after she beat Anne Leech of Rakaia 21-14.

Johnston had beaten Methven’s Lyn Fensom 21-13 in one semi-final while Leech saw off the challenge of Heidi Wilkins 21-19 in the other.

The final title of the day, for the colts men went to Shane Calder of the Ashburton MSA, after he beat Methven’s John Eddington to stop him getting back-to-back titles.

The closest final of the day in the race to 21 shots, Eddington fought back from being well down in the match only to come up short as Calder secured the required shots to win 21-20.
