Ashburton crash ends in tragedy BY SUSAN SANDYS

Hammers outplayed P24

The driver of a car which crashed into a fence on the Methven Highway in the early hours of Saturday morning summoned help from a nearby house. However, it was too late to save his passenger, 21-year-old David Morgan Muir of Tinwald. Muir was found deceased after the car was located off the road. The 22-year-old local man who was the driver had also been injured, and was taken to Ashburton Hospital in a serious condition. The Guardian understands he has since been released from hospital. “While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, police remind all drivers at all times to take care on the roads, drive to the conditions, and to ob-

serve the speed limits,” a police spokesperson said yesterday. The crash happened about 1.30am about eight kilometres from Ashburton, and darkness at the time necessitated a search of the surrounding area to ensure there were no other passengers. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade responded and members assisted with the search. Chief Alan Burgess said there had seemed to be some doubt as to whether everyone had been accounted for. “It was just a matter of eliminating all those possibilities,” Burgess said. He reinforced the police message of drivers taking care on the roads at all times. “They (police) have got a very good programme as far as awareness goes, and I think people just have to take heed

of it,” Burgess said. It has been a horror weekend on the roads in Canterbury. Among Ashburton fire brigade callouts was one to a car versus power pole crash on Fairfield Road between State Highway One and the railway line, Fairton, about 4.40am Sunday morning. Police reported the sole occupant of the car sustained a head injury but was out of the car and walking around, and taken to hospital as a precaution. The power pole was down with lines hanging on a tree, but the wires were not live as the power had gone underground recently. The Fairton crash followed a fatal three-car crash south of Timaru on Saturday, in which Daniel Anderson, 40, was killed and a seven-year-old was critically injured.
