For more than 20 years Park Street Day Care has been home-awayfrom-home to thousands of older Mid Cantabrians.

They’ve come to share a meal, a chat and entertainment with friends in purpose-built rooms at St Stephen’s Church.

It’s been a daily gathering for many that’s had the added benefit of being part of a church community where there’s a steady stream of events and visitors.

Next year the day care centre is on the move to new rooms at Ashburton Hospital.

The move is about providing additional space for extra ser-

vices such as rehabilitation and diversional therapy sessions, but it’s also about utilising Ashburton Hospital’s facilities better.

It’s a move, St Stephen’s vicar Joan Clark has concerns about, saying it could see the homely aspect of the service disappear.

“We’re afraid they’ll lose the family atmosphere they have here.

Wastebusters services extended

Why fix what isn’t broken, say new Wastebusters owners Brent and Maureen McLaren.

The Ashburton couple put in an eleventh hour bid to take over the recycling centre as it approached closure last month.

“Personally I think it had to be continued, not only for the environment, but for the local farmers, it’s a service that seems to be operating very well,” said Brent, a long-time Mid Canterbury contractor.

Wastebusters was previously run by a trust and had been an institution in Mid Canterbury since its establishment in 1994. It is now McLaren Contracting trading as Wastebusters, retaining all its previous recycling services, with the addition of other services including the supply of firewood and landscaping materials.

Retaining the Wastebusters name seemed to make perfect sense, Brent said.

“Because I don’t think you should change something that’s not broken, and is recognised.

And we are doing it on a shoestring, so it will save a lot of signwriting.”

Taking over the business meant they could not only retain that aspect of their business, but also retain the green-waste drop-off service at the McNally Street site,

alongside other important Wastebusters services.

These include free drop-off of household items for resale in the on-site Wastebusters shop, and free drop off of scrap metal, and cardboard which is baled and shipped to overseas markets.

The popular Wastebusters ser-

vice of collection of silage wrap and silage covers will continue, as well as the supply and service of farm rubbish containers.

There is currently no re-sale market for silage wrap, however the Ashburton District Council had come on board to store bales until either a market or disposal

method is developed, Brent said.

Brent said they had re-employed one of the former Wastebusters staff and were also keen to keep on an additional casual worker.

The McLarens are introducing longer operating hours at the McNally Street site – 7.30am to 5.30pm seven days per week.

Park Street Day Care on the move From P1 Many of those using day care enjoyed being in an environment that wasn’t institutional and wasn’t part of a hospital setting, she said.

Little things such as a homemade morning and afternoon tea, the opportunity to talk to people attending services at the adjacent church, or meeting with church visitors all created a special atmosphere and opportunities to mix with the wider community, she said.

She believes the relocation will be into the hospital’s nurses’ home and says this will see clients in a

more isolated environment.

While the move won’t be made until next year, the church was already looking for a new tenant for the day care centre.

The relocation of day care was part of better utilising all of the hospital’s facilities, said general manager Bernie Marra.

“In planning how best to use all of the hospital facilities, the opportunity arose to bring Park Street older persons’ day activity group into the hospital grounds and while this presents the unusual challenge of “Park Street” moving to Elizabeth Street, it won’t

necessarily be changing its name,” she said.

Over many years the Anglican Parish of Ashburton had provided a great facility for the service, Marra said. “We have been very grateful to the awesome volunteers that make it possible. The hospital and community health services also greatly appreciate the work Sue Hopkins (day care co-ordinator) and the diversional therapy services team provide in the community.”

The day care team had invited hospital managers to speak with some of the day care clients and to

ask them how they felt about the change, she said.

“The response was overwhelmingly positive and the possibilities that come with a bigger space and surrounding garden area are really exciting.”

Hopkins believes there are plenty of positives about the move to the hospital site.

“It’ll be easier to access the services the hospital offers, and we’ll be part of the bigger team and get support when needed.

“To have more space will enable our service to grow but at the same time keep the personal touch it

has now,” she said.

The main purpose of day care was to provide socialisation opportunities to clients and the new environment means a bigger building with garden, trees and places to picnic.

“We will be sad to move on, but the facility we have been in has allowed us to grow to such an extent that we now need larger rooms and outside areas.

“All staff are excited by this move and all look forward to a positive future for Park Street Day Centre.

It’s a win-win for us all,” Hopkins said.

Domain tractor takes break

The elderly Bulldog tractor in the Ashburton Domain playground is the keeper of memories for three generations of children, but time and changing health and safety regulations mean it’s currently taking a holiday.

It’s the oldest piece of equipment in the playground, and when it’s out of action it’s clear it’s also the most popular.

Today it sits behind a wire fence while children stand and wonder why.

But that why is all about bringing the tractor back into use, renovated, restored and as a much safer place to play, says Ashburton District Council supervisor gardens and health and safety Michael Power.

The tractor was installed in the playground in the 1960s and from day one it’s been a hit with youngsters, Power said.

With that heavy use, even the

sturdiest of tractors eventually needs a bit of TLC. Since it’s been out of action the Bulldog has had its sharp edges ground off, its tyres inflated and it’s now ready to have a bark chip fall zone put in place.

The final touch will be a paint job courtesy of Bunnings staff.

All of that, however, has taken far longer than expected, Power said.

“It’s been too long and we acknowledge that.

“It would have been far easier to take it out completely, but families love it. People say they grew up playing on it and they’re now put-

ting their kids on it.”

Over the years a number of parts of the tractor have mysteriously disappeared, he said, but in spite of it now being a very paredback version of the original it continued to outstrip some of the modern pieces of equipment in

popularity, he said.

And while the tractor may be missing some of its parts, another piece of equipment was missing completely – an old gun. The domain team would love to find that gun and put it back in the playground, Power said.

Risky overtaking gets its reward A 42-year-old man who overtook a vehicle that was already overtaking another vehicle was fined $150, when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Peter Adrian Wilson was travelling northbound on State Highway 1 near Rangitata on April 9 when he performed a manoeuvre that gave Timaru woman Diane Cox a “big fright”.

Speaking as a witness, Cox said she had checked her mirror and indicated before overtaking a ute and trailer in an area where there

was no passing lane.

She glanced in her mirror again, saw Wilson travelling close enough that she “couldn’t see his number plate,” and then witnessed him driving past her on the right-hand side, so the vehicles were three abreast.

Cox wrote down his number plate and contacted police.

Wilson was stopped by police near Tinwald and denied Cox’s allegations.

He pleaded not guilty to the inconsiderate passing manoeuvre, but JPs Maria Hibbert and Eric

Weir said the evidence was considerable.

Wilson has also been ordered to pay $130 in court costs and $28 towards the witness’s travel expenses.

Tyron Jahan Chapman, 23, has been ordered to pay $400 plus court costs after driving while forbidden to drive. He was stopped by police on Alford Forest Road on August 3. He initially provided his brother’s name and details, but police were able to determine his identity.

Rua Te Rawhiti Robin Harrington, 20, has been ordered to pay $750 plus court costs after travelling at 168km/h in a 100kmh zone. He was stopped by police on the Methven Highway on the afternoon of August 2. He told court it was a bad decision which he wouldn’t make again.

Joshua Boulden, 18, has been ordered to pay $750 plus court costs after travelling at 155km/h in a 100km/h zone. He was stopped by police on State Highway 1 near Ealing and presented a learner’s li-

cence, despite travelling alone. He informed police he was on his way to Timaru Hospital.

Michelle Jane Paige, 19, has been ordered to pay $400 plus court costs after failing to stop for a police car displaying red and blue lights. Police alleged that she was driving an excessively noisy vehicle in Geraldine, and sped up to 85km an hour in a 50km/h speed limit zone when police attempted to pull her over. She told police she had been having a bad day.

Short Shrek Jnr theatre season to start soon

Sixty-one young locals have been putting in long hours at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre as they prepare for a Shrek-themed song and theatre spectacular.

With just two sleeps until they deliver Shrek Jr the Musical to audiences, members of the Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre have been working to perfect their performances.

A grand set, created by committee members, has arrived on stage while the costumes are ready to rock, right down to Shrek’s lifelike mask.

It is three months since auditions were held and around 10 weeks since rehearsals began, and performers said they are “very excited” to reach performance week.

Last year, MCCT delivered two other Disney favourites – the Aristocats Kids and My Son Pinocchio Jr, in a show that was lauded as a great night’s entertainment for young and old.

While they have kept the Disney theme, they have now opted to bring junior and senior students into a single billing.

Sheree Livingstone is in the director’s seat, while the production is being musically directed by Jo Castelow and choreographed by Jessie Thomson.

Black-billed gull makes bird vote ballot

Black-billed gull

The endangered black-billed gulls that nest in the braids of the Ashburton River are on the ballot for this year’s bird of the year competition.

The contest is run annually by Forest and Bird as a way to raise awareness of native birds, their habitats and threats.

Votes will be hidden this year and the winner announced on October 15.

Forest and Bird says tragically, a third of the birds on the voting list are in danger of becoming extinct, so they need all the recognition they can get.

The 61 birds on this year’s list include the black-billed gull, wrybills (also endangered) and last year’s winner, the kea.

Around 4500 black-billed gulls have already been sighted in two spots on the Ashburton River in

the past few weeks, as they prepare to nest.

About 3000 are at the river mouth, with 1500-odd hanging around Melrose Road.

People have been asked to stay clear of the birds, who nest on lowlying shingle islands in the river.

Environment Canterbury last month organised a bulldozer to create a special shingle island in the river near the State Highway

One bridge, in case the birds wanted to nest in their favourite spot though high flows in the river this year mean they have a good selection of clear spots.

Forest and Bird are erecting signs to warn four-wheel drive vehicles and dog walkers to keep clear of the birds, but everyone can help raise their profile by going to www. birdoftheyear.org.nz and voting for them.

Ollie’s plea for charity In August, student Ollie Blackwell reached out to his principal for help supporting Cure Kids.

His brother Bentley has epilepsy, he explained, and he would like to hold a mufti day to support the good work that the charity does.

His wish was granted and on September 28, all of Methven Primary School and all of Leap Ahead Early Childhood Centre dressed up in red.

The initiative raised over $400 in gold coin donations for Cure Kids.

s a youngster, I was lucky enough to be a part of the Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre – a wonderful place for youngsters with a real thespian side to learn and grow.

They were awesome times, performing often in the Winchmore Hall to a full crowd of attendees and I can happily say that a large number of those I was on stage with, 20 odd years ago, are still pulling themselves up onto stage now for the likes of the Variety Theatre Ashburton and the Methven Theatre Company, as well as in other performing settings.

Last week I was involved in

the 75th Jubilee of the Methven Theatre Company and while the show, Encore, was fun to be a part of – the Saturday night Gala event, which saw close to 100 former and current members of the theatre company converge prior to the curtain opening, was a really special occasion.

To hear the tales of some pa-

trons about their time being involved with the theatre company, whether it be as a performer or any of the other various associated roles, showed just how many people it takes to pull off a show and the hours of work that goes in behind the scenes would quite simply blow some people’s minds, I’d imagine.

However, there are many, like myself, who probably wouldn’t be involved in these things still had it not been for that early introduction and we are incredibly lucky that there is still this avenue in which youngsters can explore their creative side on a stage.

Tomorrow night, the latest offering from the Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre goes live on the stage, with a Shrek-themed production set to run for three shows.

We have some ridiculously talented local youngsters performing around the traps tomorrow night and this year’s show will be no different.

The cast have been working hard to put the show together and with a renowned directing team pointing them in all the right directions, it will be a must-see for any Mid Canterbury theatre fan.

And having good crowds along

to enjoy the show is a necessity.

If we want these things to continue and to allow future children to be given the same opportunity to flourish, it is important that as a community we get behind things like the children’s theatre.

So many of those who carry on from the children’s theatre go on to fill lead roles in other shows around the district and the prospect of that stepping stone no longer being available to them should be extremely worrying.

If you’ve never been to a show before, perhaps now might be the best time to do it.

Who knows, you might even enjoy yourself.

Getting on with delivering Jo Luxton

his September marked the 125th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in this country.

New Zealand was the first country in the world where women won the right to vote – and it’s a legacy our government is building on with the strides we’re making towards pay equity for women.

It’s an issue that needs attention. At 9.2 per cent, our gender pay gap is smaller than the OECD average. But it still isn’t good enough. It’s time that women and men who perform work of the same value are finally paid the same.

That’s why the government celebrated suffrage day this year by introducing a new law that makes it easier for women to get fair pay, in their workplace and in their industry.

We’re making it quicker, easier and cheaper to achieve equal pay and pay equity.

Our new law is going to improve the lives of workers and families in Ashburton and all over New Zealand.

On the same day, we announced an increase to the annual refugee quota from 1000 to 1500. This was the right thing to do. It meets New Zealand’s obligation to do our bit and provides a small number of people, displaced by war and disaster, with a safe place to call home.

These are just two recent examples of the government working hard to improve people’s lives.

But it’s not just what we’re doing, it’s also how we’re doing it.

Jacinda Ardern recently did

something no New Zealand MMP Prime Minister has done before: she published the government’s detailed plan for the country.

It’s not just a party’s preelection manifesto; it’s a coordinated, cabinet-mandated, government-wide plan of action.

The government plan has three parts. The first part is to deliver an economy that is growing strongly and working well for all New Zealanders.

We’ll do that by growing our regions and sharing our prosperity more fairly. And we’ve already boosted the incomes of 384,000 families on modest and middle incomes by an average of $75 per week.

The second part of our plan is to improve the wellbeing of New Zealanders and their families.

We’re doing that by providing more affordable homes for families to buy, making sure rental homes are healthy and dry, and reducing the cost of going to the doctor. We’re helping families spend more time connecting with their new babies, improving community safety with more police, and so much more.

And the third part of the plan the Prime Minister announced is to make New Zealand proud.

Across everything we do, we’re making sure you see our enduring Kiwi values of fairness, equality and openness reflected by this Government.

We’re constantly taking action to deliver an economy that works for all of us, to improve people’s wellbeing, and to make New Zealanders proud.

And we’re just getting started.

Don’t hack at the problem, fix it properly

E

very engineer knows the world can be held together with duct tape, but eventually, you are going to have to fix it.

It’s a quick hack that gives a rough and immediate reprieve but that’s about it.

Life can be a bit like that.

We get moments of needing to hold it all together so that we can let it all out later, in private.

And, if that doesn’t happen, we simply bury it with an unwanted habit or two.

We live in a society bent on instant access, quick life hacks, fast food, and so on. Everything has to be NOW and we will be damned if we are going to wait!

And, just like fast food, we know it’s not really doing us much good and we will certainly pay for it later.

We often compartmentalise our problems, we forget we are the common element in all of them.

And maybe sorting ourselves out, as a whole, will eliminate most of the problems we experience.

For example, over consumption (whether it’s food or alcohol) is largely linked to emotional and behavioural triggers.

Yet many people want to fix the food (or drink) issue in isolation – give me the pill and let me get on with it, and we do not address the aspects leading to the problem in the first place.

I often hear “Sahera, I want to stop eating sugar, can you hypnotise me today to stop it?” They are disappointed to hear that it won’t happen in one session (or by a wave of a wand or a clicking of fingers) and the reasons leading to the over consumption of sugar will need to be addressed for any long-term success to happen.

The Hypnotic Virtual Gastric Band is another, on its own the success is limited.

It only helps when it addresses the behavioural and emotional links to overeating.

This takes a few sessions, looking at the whole person and their life situation, and not the eating alone.

It’s the same for the actual gastric band surgery.

Without looking at the problem behind the overeating, the surgery, too, has limited longterm success with many patients returning to old coping habits.

Diets are no different –all too often, we finish the diet and go back to the old patterns of eating, and end up heavier than we were before the diet.

Addressing the core of the problem prevents it from being repeated, it gives you life-long success, anything else is a hack – a rough cut to fix the problem inelegantly.

If it’s past hurts, there are ways to respectfully place them behind us and move forward, we needn’t dig it up nor pretend it isn’t there.

Let’s put it in its rightful place and let it go.

If it’s a life situation, instead of sticking our heads in the sand hoping it’ll get better, let’s solve it and get it done and finished.

The engineer in me refuses the quick-fix approach. Its success is limited and, if you are going to do a good job, sometimes we need to take the thing apart and clean all the components and put it back

together as good as new.

Sometimes the job is bigger than expected, and yet, most times it’s just a little tap here and there, a bit of oil and that gets the mechanics working together sweetly.

It’s knowing where to tap and when to squirt the oil!

Expecting to be the expert at everything is a ridiculous notion.

Finding someone to help is important when we are stuck.

Asking for help is not weak. It takes a great deal of bravery to seek guidance and assistance.

It takes strength and it’s that kind of courage that leads to the ultimate resolution.

M. bovis cull taking its toll on farmers

Ministry officers acknowledge the response to eradicate mycoplasma bovis cattle disease is taking its toll on farmers.

Ministry for Primary Industries response director Geoff Gwynn was in Ashburton meeting with farming leaders, response staff, industry partners and support agencies as well as community leaders last week.

A ministry spokeswoman said the response was tracking well and the general mood in Ashburton was good, but the effect the response was having on individual farmers must be acknowledged.

“These farmers have found themselves in trying circumstances through no fault of their own and Geoff has been meeting with key people in Ashburton to help work out local solutions to help them through this time. It is the members of their own communities who are best placed to help support farmers who may need it.’’

The Government announced in May its decision to spend $886 million on the phased eradication of the disease, expected to result in the culling of more than 150,000 animals.

MPI said the disease response was, overall, making good progress with 38 properties now in

In Canterbury, 18 properties have had their infected property status lifted since M. bovis was first discovered. So far every identified property with M. bovis is connected to another

The spokeswoman said this may be of little comfort to the farmers affected by the response, but it showed good progress was being made.

Fonterra biggest player in raw milk market Fonterra is still by far the biggest cheese in New Zealand’s raw milk market with the latest figures showing its processing rivals have yet to make a real fight of the big cooperative’s 17-year reign.

Given the growth and geographic expansion of privately owned dairy companies Open Country and Synlait, industry observers had expected Fonterra’s hold on the raw milk collection market to have slipped under 80 per cent last season, as competition increased for flat-lining national milk production.

The farmer-owned co-operative started life in a 2001 industry mega-merger with 96 per cent of the market, enabled by special legislation.

But new DairyNZ figures show Fonterra’s raw milk market share in the recently ended 2017-2018 season was 81 per cent, just a shade lower than the 82 per cent share recorded the previous season.

Observers suggest that Fonterra’s market share has not slipped as steeply as expected despite widening criticism of its financial performance and investment decisions and the growing strength of competitors, because some of its farmerowners have increased their individual milk production even while national production peaked.

raised the need for an easier and sharper system for claiming costs resulting from the response such as paying extra prices for stock after cows were culled and for ensuring infected animals are quarantined before being transported

to meat processing companies.

The spokeswoman said MPI has decided to pay for some farming costs upfront to support farmers who were under movement restrictions. This included farmers paying for feed to avoid animal welfare situations where the animals could not move off farms for grazing.

Compensation must meet certain criteria under the Biosecurity Act and was for losses incurred by MPI direction and mainly relating to the destruction of stock and effects of movement controls.

Straight-forward claims could be processed quickly and complex claims naturally took longer, she said.

Gwynn’s Ashburton visit is part of his regular schedule of travelling around New Zealand to regional control centres.

He was also in Ashburton two weeks ago and has travel planned for other areas in coming weeks.

He will continue to talk to key people in regions about the response, hear their thoughts and see things from a local perspective.

Spring bulk milk testing is well underway with almost one third of the testing completed.

So far there have been no unexpected results and the findings are expected to be released later this year once the testing has been completed.

Country Dairy rose from 7.1 per cent to nudge 7.5 per cent last season, while listed Synlait Milk and the co-operative Westland were next, each posting a share of 3.4 per cent.

Next in line was Miraka with a 1.4 per cent share and Oceania Dairy with 1.1 per cent, according to DairyNZ. Blue chip Waikato value-add co-operative exporter Tatua collected .07 per cent of all New Zealand milk.

A report in April by dairy industry specialty analysts TDB Advisory suggests Synlait’s market share has fallen slightly from TDB’s 4 per cent in 2017, while Westland’s has crept up from 3 per cent.

The market shares of Miraka, Oceania and Tatua remain largely unchanged from 2017.

TDB’s report said milk production volumes had grown by 52 per cent or around 470 million litres a year between Fonterra’s formation in 2001 and 2017.

While Fonterra’s market share had fallen over this time its milk volume collection had increased by 37 per cent, said TDB. “With Fonterra collecting over 300 million litres of the average 470 million litres of new milk per year, the remaining 170 million litres have been going to Fonterra competitors,” said TDB in its April report.

A second Tasman District farm has been confirmed as an infected property (IP).

The farm is connected to known IPs through stock movements. Tracing work from this farm is now under way.

However, two more previously infected Canterbury farms have had their IP status lifted.

After the infected stock was depopulated, the farms completed their 60-day stand down period during which they were cleaned and disinfected.

The response recovery team is now assisting the farm with returning to normal operations.

Rural confidence falling

The mood of farmers has taken a tumble and is in negative territory for the first time in two years.

Farmer confidence eased from the previous quarter year in a Rabobank survey.

The survey found a fall in farmers expecting agricultural economy conditions to improve in the next year, down six per centile points to 20 per cent the last quarter.

Farmers expecting economic conditions to worsen increased slightly and those believing it would stay the same increased at 54 per cent from 46 per cent last survey.

This was led by sheep and beef farmers with confidence down among dairy farmers.

Concerns over government policy and falling commodity prices were among the main reasons cited for farmer pessimism.

Rabobank New Zealand general manager for Country Banking Hayley Gourley said the overall slide in confidence was driven by rising dairy farmer pessimism.

“Dairy farmer confidence in the agricultural economy fell sharply with the net confidence reading among dairy farmers dropping from 14 per cent last quarter to minus nine per cent in this sur-

weaker New Zealand dollar is also underpinning price support for red meat returns and we anticipate elevated prices to continue over coming months,” Gourley said.

Just over a quarter of surveyed farmers expected the performance of the agricultural economy to worsen in the coming year and pointed to government policies, falling commodity prices

and overseas markets for their pessimism.

Making them nervous are changes signalled by the government in freshwater management, biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions, foreign investment requirements for farmland ownership and the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act. Gourley said the details of the changes were unknown, but were still weighing on the minds of some farmers.

“The escalating US-China trade war is also creating uncertainty for agricultural producers here in New Zealand and farmers will be keeping a close eye on how the latest iteration of tariffs impact the global trade of agricultural products.”

Farmer expectations for their own farm business performance are also down on last quarter but remain at positive levels overall.

The pessimism was led by dairy farmers as well as horticulturists feeling their long run of lifting returns may be coming to an end.

Sheep and beef farmers were the most positive for their own business performance.

Overall farmer investment intentions were back slightly from last quarter with all sectors recording reduced investment intentions.

Prices slip at Global Dairy Trade auction Dairy product prices declined at the Global Dairy Trade auction as whole milk powder sustained its downward trend amid greater supply.

The GDT price index fell 1.9 per cent from the previous auction two weeks ago. The average price was $US2901 a tonne, compared with $US2934 a tonne two weeks ago.

Some 41,981 tonnes of product was sold, up from 39,143 tonnes two weeks ago.

Whole milk powder fell 1.2 per cent to $US2753 a tonne.

“A decline had been expected, as volumes of whole milk powder are building at this time of season as New Zealand heads into its peak milk production period,” AgriHQ dairy analyst Amy Castleton said in a note.

To be sure, the price for regular grade whole milk powder to ship in December rose 1.3 per cent, against expectations for a 0.4 per cent decline in this grade and contract, Castleton added.

“Demand for whole milk powder was high,” Castleton noted.

“North Asia (which includes

China) bought more than half of the whole milk powder that was sold.”

“China is likely to be buying product to ship in December at this time so that it lands during the period in which a lower tariff rate applies, from January 1, 2019,” Castleton said.

At the latest GDT auction, butter dropped 5.9 per cent to $US4016 a tonne, while anhydrous milk fat shed 4.4 per cent to $US5069 a tonne.

“The decline in prices for the milk fat products seems to simply

be on greater volumes-there was more butter and anhydrous milk fat sold at this event than at the” equivalent one a year earlier, according to Castleton.

“However, Oceania fat prices are quite low relative to both Europe and the United States.”

Cheddar retreated 1.2 per cent to $US3468 a tonne, while skim milk powder eased 0.3 per cent to $US1982 a tonne.

Meanwhile, lactose rose 0.6 per cent to $US913 a tonne, while rennet casein gained 3.0 per cent to $US5552 a tonne, and butter

milk powder climbed 3.6 per cent to $US2522 a tonne.

For sweet whey powder, neither an index nor price was available.

The New Zealand dollar last traded at 65.96 US cents as of 2.24pm yesterday in New York, compared with 66.16 US cents at the previous close in Wellington.

There were 143 winning bidders out of 170 participating at the 15-round auction.

The number of registered bidders was 506, up from 503 at the previous auction.

Finance MPs square-off over economy New Zealand’s economy has fallen behind Australia’s and this country had gone from creating 10,000 jobs a month to 4000, National’s finance spokeswoman says.

Amy Adams squared off yesterday with Finance Minister Grant Robertson at the New Zealand Herald’s annual Mood of the Boardroom breakfast.

Adams, who took over the opposition finance portfolio in March, called on Robertson to stop speaking in platitudes and actually deliver a clear plan of how to achieve the lofty goals that have been set out.

The first woman to stand on stage as a finance spokesperson in the 16-year history of the Mood of the Boardroom, Adams said that she did not disagree with the Coalition Government’s objectives but felt there was little evidence of moving towards bringing them to fruition.

“We have to move past the description of Nirvana and have an explanation of how to get there,” Adams said.

Adams said that while the fundamentals of the economy remained strong, there are concerns about the direction the economy

A2 Milk added to stock picks Morningstar Research has added A2 Milk Co to its 10 best stock ideas for Australia and New Zealand as the recent drop in share price created an attractive discount for a strong growth story.

The research house rates A2 a stock to “accumulate” with a fair value estimate of $14.60.

The shares are currently trading at a 22 per cent discount to that estimate, at $11.44.

A2 has dropped about 8.6 per cent since chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka disclosed a share sale in late September, for which she attracted criticism.

The recently appointed chief executive sold 357,232 shares at an average price of $12.02 per share to realise close to $4.3 million, saying she had sold the shares to fund tax and other obligations entered into before she joined A2 in mid-July. The shares

immediately fell more than 5 per cent in value.

Morningstar analyst Adam Fleck said the milk marketing firm faces risks from its large exposure to China’s infant formula market, the potential for unfavourable scientific developments, its small supply pool and competition from larger competitors.

However, those risks were mitigated by the large discount the shares are trading at, he said in a note.

“We forecast strong 20 per cent annual earnings growth over the next 10 years, driven by a percentage point of market share gain annually, on average, in Chinese infant formula and further margin expansion,” he said.

“Moreover, we expect A2 Milk’s solid brand positioning to support premium pricing for the

firm’s products, and the company’s capital-light business model will generate triple-digit ROICs,” he said referring to the return on capital invested.

Research by Armillary Private Capital, which manages the Unlisted market known as USX, shows A2’s return on capital employed was 154 per cent in 2017 and had generated a three-year average return of 83 per cent.

Supplier Synlait Milk’s return on capital employed was 14 per cent in 2017 with a 12 per cent three-year average, while Fonterra Co-operative Group’s 8.3 per cent last year for a three-year 8.1 per cent return.

All of the other companies in Morningstar’s top 10 local picks are Australian firms, although Westpac Banking Corp has a secondary listing on the NZX. – NZME

Warehouse seeks digital transformation Warehouse Group has appointed Facebook’s local chief Will Easton to its board to tap his experience in driving digital transformations.

Easton will attend his first board meeting on October 25 and shareholders will be asked to ratify his appointment at the annual meeting in November.

He’s currently Facebook’s managing director for Australia and New Zealand, having previously been the social network giant’s vice-president for Asia-Pacific

emerging markets.

Easton’s previous roles were at Google, Microsoft and Coca-Cola.

“Will is a dynamic leader with a strong track record of driving transformational change across a range of emerging markets and technologies and we are very pleased he is able to support us at what is an important time of transformation at the Warehouse Group,” chair Joan Withers said.

Warehouse introduced a new pricing strategy last year as it

Heat a heavy-based pan over a medium heat, add the curry mixture and stir for 8 minutes until fragrant.

■ Add the remaining coconut cream, lime zest and stock. Simmer (don’t let it boil) for around 15 minutes, or until it’s reduced to a pouring sauce.

■ Meanwhile, pat the steak dry with paper towels, brush with the sesame oil and season with salt and pepper.

■ Heat a little oil in a heavy-based frying pan over a high heat.

When the pan is very hot, add the steak and cook for 3-4 minutes until one side is browned and crunchy. Turn over and cook for another 3-4 minutes or until cooked to your liking. Transfer the steak to a wooden board or warmed plate, cover loosely with aluminium foil and rest for 7-10 minutes before slicing thinly across the grain.

■ Before serving, add the sugar to the sauce, taste, then add fish sauce and lime juice until the salty and sour flavours are to your liking.

■ Arrange the sliced steak alongside the rice and veges, spoon over the sauce and top with the peanuts and fresh herbs. Alternatively this can be served on top of rice in warmed bowls.

Aid slowly trickling in Aid was trickling into areas devastated by the earthquake and tsunami that struck a central Indonesian island, with one neighborhood’s residents clapping, cheering and high-fiving in their excitement Wednesday at seeing a stopped truck laden with supplies.

“I’m so happy,” said Heruwanto, 63, who goes by one name. He was clutching a box of instant noodles. “I really haven’t eaten for three days.”

Food, water, fuel and medicine had yet to reach the hardest-hit areas outside Palu, the largest city heavily damaged in Friday’s disasters. Many roads were broken and split by the violent shaking or are blocked by debris and communications lines are down in the damage zone.

“We feel like we are stepchildren here because all the help is going to Palu,” said Mohamad Taufik, 38, from the town of Donggala, where five of his relatives are still missing. “There are many young children here who are hungry and sick, but there is no milk or medicine.”

Trump ridicules Kavanaugh accuser President Donald Trump has publicly mocked Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony regarding an alleged sexual assault by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Speaking at a rally in Mississippi, the President made light of Ford’s evidence to the Senate Judiciary Committee – and cast doubt on her claims.

“Guilty until proven innocent, that’s very dangerous for our country,” Trump said of Ford’s testimony last week that Kavanaugh attempted to hold her down and remove her clothes in 1982, when they were both in high school. Kavanaugh strongly denies the

allegation. Trump also imitated Ford during her testimony, mocking her for not knowing the answers to questions such as how she had got to the party where she says Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were in high school.

“I had one beer. Well, do you think it was – Nope, it was one beer,” Trump said, mimicking Ford’s testimony last week to the Senate Judiciary.

“How did you get home? I don’t remember. How’d you get there? I don’t remember.

Where is the place? I don’t remember. How many years ago was it? I don’t know.”

Trump’s comments were

met with applause from the crowd. “I don’t know. I don’t know,” the President continued.

“What neighbourhood was it in? I don’t know. Where’s the house? I don’t know. Upstairs, downstairs – where was it? I don’t know – but I had one beer. That’s the only thing I remember.”

Trump said that the Democrats opposed to Kavanaugh’s nomination are evil people who are out to destroy people.

He said of Kavanaugh: “a man’s life is in tatters. A man’s life is shattered”.

Trump said that Kavanaugh is “like a perfect person who

is destined for the Supreme Court”.

“He’s led a life that’s like unbelievable,” the President added.

As soon as Trump mentioned Kavanaugh’s name, the crowd in the arena began chanting, “We want Kavanaugh”.

Trump expanded on the subject of the allegations against Kavanaugh by saying that the men of the nation are now under constant threat of false accusations.

“Think of your son. Think of your husband,” Trump said.

He added that he himself has experienced “many false allegations”.

Ricin laden envelope sent to Trump A third envelope containing ricin was said to have been addressed to the Donald Trump at the White House and is connected to the two packages that were sent to the Pentagon.

The first two envelopes that were addressed to Secretary of Defence James Mattis and Chief of Naval Operations John Richardson have tested positive for ricin after being

intercepted at the Pentagon, according to officials.

“The Secret Service can confirm receipt of a suspicious envelope addressed to the President on October 1, 2018,” the service said in a statement to CNN yesterday.

“The envelope was not received at the White House, nor did it ever enter the White House,” the statement added.

The first two envelopes trig-

gered alarms during screening at a mail facility which is not inside the main building but is nearby, defence officials said.

They have been sent to the FBI for additional testing.

At around the same time, two people were hospitalised after being exposed to a white powder that was contained in mail sent to Sen. Ted Cruz’s Houston campaign office.

Their injuries are not

known. Neither of the victims worked for Cruz’s campaign.

It is not known if the two incidents are linked or what the substance sent to Cruz’s office was.

All mail sent to the Pentagon via the US Postal Service was placed under quarantine as a precaution and all workers from Cruz’s Houston campaign office were evacuated.

www.guardianonline.co.nz Ashburton Bowling Club On Saturday The Ingold Tray, sponsored by Netherby Meats in-house tournament was held with great weather.

Forty-Two members took part in this tournament on a great green. The games were played in great spirits, there was plenty of laughter on the greens. We played two games then had a huge afternoon tea which was provide by all the members bringing a plate. This was followed by another game.

The winners on the day were 1st Peter Collins, George Crack and Heather Gray the only team to win their three games, 2nd was Allan Hill, Brentton Donaldson and Wendy Herriott with two and a half wins, 3rd was Tony Blain, Dianna King and Allison Gibbs.

On Sunday three of our members excelled themselves by winning the Walls Cup at Hampstead along with an ex Ashburton player. Well done to Roger & Diane Gutberlet, Murray Anderson along with Mike Quinn winning their four games. There were also two other Ashburton teams who had mixed success on the day.

Members don’t forget that the Rollover Triples start this coming week-end on Saturday 1.15pm disc in by 1pm. New Members welcome.

Ashburton County Lions Members of the Ashburton County Lions Club were treated to a performance by the Phoenix Rising Choir at their September meeting. Everyone greatly enjoyed listening to the choir directed by Jo Costello and accompanied by Stephen Diedricks on the piano. It is exciting to see the dedication and talent displayed by these young people from our Ashburton community. In appreciation the club donated to their travel fund to help with the costs of competing and other future endeavours.

Vice District Governor Kevin Bryson then spoke to the club giving insight into the goals of Lions International President Gudrun Yngvadottir and bringing a message from the District Governor Tony Thomas including his motto for the year ‘ together we serve better’.

A donation of $3000 dollars is to be forwarded to Ronald McDonald House to assist with the purchase of a new washing machine and drier.

Members brought along toiletries for world service day and this year these will be donated to SEEDS Ashburton. Helpers were organised for the Parks Street Day Care driving roster and the Blind Foundation street appeal to be held on October 26.

Everyone is looking forward to our major fund raiser for the year, another sold out ‘Stars in Your Eyes’ competition on October 13. A big thank you to all of the individuals and businesses that help make this such a successful event.

After enjoying a meal together the meeting concluded with more tail twisting and the drawing of the raffles.

Ashburton Golf Club Well that’s club champs sorted out for 2018, and big congratulations go to our winners, who will have their names engraved on the honours board, alongside all the other Brandon legends.

The Silver and Senior champs proved again that they are just a little bit better than the chasing pack with back-to-back wins.

Well done Pauline Bell and Jordan Green. Jenny Stoddart and Leigh Wackrow picked up the ladies Bronze titles, and Chris Lovelock, Dave Hewitt and Wilson Hii, finished top of the intermediate and junior sections. Sam Prince also topped a great season taking out the 9 hole champs.

A great day for golf brought out some super games, the course was in glorious condition (as always), though some flags were a wee bit sneaky, set up to be a solid test. We must also give congratulations to our plate winners, take a bow Sally Lemon, Shirley Elliot, Eleanor Sullivan, Jeff Hewitt, Sam Clarke, Robert Pawsey and Perry Hunt.

Yes I know what you’re thinking, it surprised me as well and Perry’s opponent did turn up! Well done to everyone involved.

On Saturday, Greg Fleming came to golf in a mask and striped jumper to win Matts pro shop day, other great scores were Kay Fox, Paul Greer, Terry O’Reilly and Murray Wackrow. Another fun day Matt, keep up the good work.

This Saturday we have the annual Captain versus President matchplay, turn up choose your sides, and have a match play game, every winner picks up a golf ball, and also 8 RMF cup points, 4 points for a draw and 2 for a loss. After your game please put a nice big Win, Lost or Half on your card, so when we are putting the cards through we get the correct points for you.

The RMF cup is really heating up just 3 rounds before the cut, now is the time to be peaking to get yourself into the top 30 for a chance to pick up a free sub.

Hinds Women’s Institute On Wednesday September 26, Hinds WI held their Spring Flower Show at the Hinds Community Centre.

Three friendly and obliging members of Rural Women, Ngaire Brown, Jill Harris, and Jill Geddes came out to judge the entries and to offer suggestions afterwards. They were thanked by President Betty Wilson and presented with a gift each.

The business part of the meeting opened with the Ode and Aspirations, the Roll Call was honoured this being, Coins for Friendship to assist women throughout the South Pacific region through ACWW. A letter of thanks from the Blind Foundation for our WI catering and entertaining in August was received, a financial report showed us kick off, if you haven’t got your team in, it’s not too late just contact Dee and she will sort you out. Ashburton MSA Petanque Club Three players taking part in the Doubles in Dunedin did well with Richard Browne (Ashburton) and Neville Frost (Dunedin) winning on the Saturday. Sunday saw Karen and Neville Bensdorp as runners up in the Waipounanamu Doubles.

The same week end seven of our players were placed in the Spring Triples held at Ascot. Winners were: Rewa Kyle (Ashburton) Jonathan Crum (Ashburton) and Tom Saunders (Ascot) Runners-up were: Jan Guilford (Ashburton) Marion Harrison (Ashburton) and Paul Stewart (Christchurch).

Plate winners were: Shelagh Field (Ashburton) John Yellowlees (Papanui) and Janet Wilkinson (Papanui) Runners up were: Ellen Pithie, (Ashburton) Tilo Petschick (Ascot) and Marjorie Vincent (Papanui) Bowl runner up were Betty King (Ashburton) John McKay (Timaru) and Corrie Van Herwaarden (Ascot) A good effort by all concerned.

This weekend we have three players taking part in the South Island doubles and singles in Dunedin and we wish them well.

Ashburton has been very involved and is taking part in a Super Six competition with Ascot, Papanui, and Christchurch.

We have played the first 2 rounds and this week our 6 players are going to Christchurch. October 25 is the final round and will be played in Ashburton.

Thursday October 11 at 6.30 will be our first night of Twilight Petanque which is open to non-members.

Tuition is free and boules will be provided.

The day before that, Wednesday 10 Lochlea Petanque players will be joining to play and for afternoon tea.

Other matters included the A&P Show – raffle roster, and entry to the Bay and Tray classes, and also the recent celebration of Women’s Suffrage. Following an informal chat and the reading of the Link Letter from Hampshire, the meeting adjourned to the Supper room for presentation of the Flower Show awards. During that time a lovely afternoon tea was served by the Hostesses, Coyla Chisnall and Rosa Bennett.

Ashburton Toastmasters The Ashburton Toastmasters club meeting of September 26 was back to usual, more or less, but again with welcome guests from St John Youth South Island Region.

Andy, the evening’s Toastmaster, opened on time with some roles changes and a good explanation of his role, and also reminded other member to explain their roles. Good reminder, especially with guests.

Started work when John Bell was the boss, in the days of clanking linotype machines, melting down tons of lead, and having printers’ ink everywhere. There were around a dozen blokes in the comp room, highly-skilled lino operators and compositors in an industry that has long since ceased to exist.

Through the evening Andy told us all sorts of interesting and sometimes weird facts, but also didn’t forget to add personal touch and share personal experiences related to the speeches. Phil, the evening’s grammarian, introduced the word of the day: effervescent, meaning ‘bubbly’.

Mercedes gave a thorough introduction of Chiyo, which gave us a fascinating Icebreaker speech about the written Japanese language (turns out there are actually 3 different ones).

Pat introduced Phil, who gave a very funny speech about his experiences during a family vacation in Australia. Turns out it’s not just the animals that can get you there.

Mark introduces Rene, who gave us a thought provoking speech about our waning privacy in a world full of security cameras. Something to consider and be aware off, as these cameras may not always be used for good.

Then we had our Table topics session. While we had lower participation from the St John cadets compared to the previous club’s meeting, the cadets that participate the session were very courageous. The challenge was being assigned a random animal and convincing Noah to let you (that animal) on his arc. Some very funny moments.

After the break Mercedes gave an evaluation for Chiyo’s speech with a useful recommendation for a whiteboard instead of written pages as a visual aid.

Pat reviewed Phil’s speech, commending him on pausing when he lost his train of thought and then continuing without using fillers. Mark evaluated Rene’s speech and reminded us all we were, in fact, sitting in a room with security cameras and not being aware of them.

This followed by Jeff doing a great, as usual, evaluation of the Table topics, not an easy task. He gave some useful advices to our guests.Robin did the grammarian evaluation for the evening, following

by Allanah timer’s report. Next Matt, as the memory master, gave us some interesting questions about the evening’s topics, followed by Adi’s general evaluation.

Rene wrapped up the evening by commending our guests on trying their hand in public speaking and Andy closed the evening.

Next meeting will be contest night: table topics and humorous speech contests. As always, guest are welcome.

Chertsey Hall Society

Eight runners and 10 walkers lined up at the start line to complete 3km beginning at the domain duck pond bridge, taking in West Street, through the domain around past the Croquet club, finishing back on West Street. The weather played its part with a very warm 19 degrees and a light breeze. The selectors had done a great job with start times with some good challenges taking place.

Everyone put in a huge effort, digging deep where required and were rewarded with great times. Our thanks must go to our time keepers and marshals, Debra Curtain, Gordon Clinton and Johnny McGrath. Afternoon tea was enjoyed by all afterwards.

Merv Gilbert and Alison Conway took part in the Oxford Country Classic half marathon on Sunday morning. Running 14km together before turning onto the home straight on the main road into Oxford meant single file was required with the pace quickening and each pushing the other along, finishing within a minute of each other. They were joined by past members Jim and Leslie Stubbs who took part in the 12km walk. A very enjoyable country event where everyone takes home a prize.

Chertsey Hall Society have been fund raising through hall hire and catering so now have the funds to have all the outside wood work stripped and painted. This is being done by a local painter and should be finished in a few weeks.

A good time to have a pot luck tea and community get-together on November 2, and for the younger generation and the young at heart there will be a Halloween party.

Plenty of activities for the young and not so young to do together with help from our Chertsey Home and School group.

MSA Bowling Club With the bowling season under way we have hosted our first Friday Triples tournament for the season which was won

by Bob Harrison’s team also our own annual Peters Cup open tournament taken out by Sandra Keith’s team. It was pleasing to see a full green for both these events.

Last Saturday our in-house Ted Peck Progressive Tournament was held this was taken out by John Argyle skip Guildford Lane 2nd Jack Sclater lead.

The Sub Centre Interclub competition commencing November 7 we require members to put your names on noticeboard to participate in this event.

Championship entries required by this Saturday so the draws can be completed get your names in now. This season we have development team entered in the Bowls Canterbury Interclub competition this is pleasing to see as we have not had a team competing in Christchurch for the last five years we wish them well.

Once again Linton we will be organising Biz Bowls commencing November 1 running for 5 weeks, any groups interested in having an enjoyable evening contact Linton Muir 027 2225432.

Anyone wishing to have a go at bowls most welcome at 115 Racecourse Road Club days Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 1.30pm. See you on the green.

Tinwald golf teams run rampant Two Tinwald Golf Club teams came away from the Aorangi Golf pennants finals day at the Methven Golf Club on Sunday with smiles on their dials. Tinwald had teams in both the Patterson Cup and Moyes Cup finals, taking on a team from the Mayfield Golf Club in the Patterson Cup final and winning, and defeating a team from Fairlie to take home the Moyes Cup. Tinwald had two teams in two earlier pennants finals, including the top grade – the Holmes Cup – last month, but both came away with losses. The victorious bunch from Sunday’s finals were (from left) Stephen Kircher, Brock Peddie, Stephen Anderson, Paul Hefford, Terry Reynolds, Gordon Rennie, Rodger Bruce, Clarry Whiting (front), Andy Rattray (rear), Kevin Bishop, Adam Lowe and Lindsay Jackson.

The Annual Flower Show was held recently in St Andrews Hall.

The Judges Jenny Humm and Dorothy Knight commented on the quality and large number of entries for such a small membership.

Classes were for Cut Flowers, Decorative, cooking Craft and Vegetables.

With the knitted Beanies being donated to Birthright.

The van Leeuwen Trophy for the Most Outstanding Entry was won by Pam Dolan for a beautiful Christmas Stocking.

Pam also won the Sanford Trophy for most Points in the Show.

Afterwards John conducted a Bottle Auction which boosted the funds and caused much laughter.

After the meeting members gathered outside to plant a White Kate Shepherd Camelia (left) donated by Patsy King to remember Woman’s Sufferage 125th Anniversary.

Arrangements are being made for a plaque.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday September 27.

We were celebrating our 73rd birthday and met in the Doris Linton Lounge.

Apologies were received. Hope McIntosh played the piano as the RSA song was sung. Also Happy Birthday to those with a September birthday. Sympathy was extended to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one. Sick members were wished a speedy recovery.

The cake stall last month made $172.60.

Wendy Marr was thanked for making and decorating the birthday cake. Patrice Ansell was introduced. She and her husband had been to Russia. She had an extensive photo presentation.

Wonderful cathedrals and museums and contents. Red Square, Kremlin and various monuments. They rode the Subway, had a river cruise and saw Swan Lake Ballet. Patrice was thanked for sharing wonderful travels with us.

Colleen and Pat cut the birthday cake.

Raffles were won by Marge Binnie and Wendy Marr.

No competitions this month. Hostesses Joan and Margaret served afternoon tea and the lovely birthday cake.

Run and Walk Ashburton Wednesday evening walkers had seven members between the two start times this week, once again enjoying a solid walk around their town route.

Tuesday night sprints for the runners has now come to an end with members still working this into their programme but in their own time.

Saturday morning early birds had a cracker morning and a great turn out with nine runners and four walkers. A beautiful sunny morning with runners and walkers both pushing the pace down the south side river track, meeting back at Columbus for a well-earned cuppa.

The afternoon meet on Saturday had members competing for two trophies.

The Albert McIntosh trophy for the runners and the Gilbert trophy for walkers.

Tinwald Garden Club After welcoming a new member to the Club and dealing with business, members listened to a very interesting and informative talk from Wendy Millichamp on her lifelong interest in and love for lilies and bulbs.

Purchasing the Mt Somers Lilyfields in 1955 and then developing the mail ordering business known as Lilies International their lives have been fully occupied with lilies.

Advice included the fact that lilies are gross feeders which like to be dormant and can be mulched. A balanced fertiliser can be used as can also a rose spray for insects.

New bulbs should be planted at 10cm.

In brief Players ‘humiliated’ Damning findings have been released after a review into New Zealand Football, upholding complaints made by members of the Football Ferns about the organisation’s conduct and culture.

An independent review, undertaken by employment lawyer Pip Muir, included interviews with around 80 people including 12 players who made complaints into the conduct and culture of NZF, as well as Heraf and former NZF chief executive Andy Martin. Muir found the complaints raised by players were “genuine and largely substantiated” and that former Football Ferns coach and NZF technical director Andreas Heraf breached New Zealand Football’s Code of Conduct, Human Resources policy on harassment, and Worksafe New Zealand bullying guidelines. “He offended and humiliated the players and a number of staff.”

Off on an Australia tour Ashburton College’s first XI cricket side is about to embark on a four-match international pre-season tour.

The team is bound for Australia on a trip that will see the young players get some valuable game time ahead of the 2018/19 season, and pick up some new skills along the way.

Game one of the tour will take place on Sunday at the Caloundra Cricket Club and it will be a

50 over game. The following day they’ll have a coaching session with Alan (Butch) Gale, head coach of the Matthew Flinders Cricket Club, before playing a T20 against Sunshine Coast Grammar School on the Tuesday.

The following day the side will take on a team from the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association in a T20 under lights, before finishing up with a 50 over

game against Matthew Flinders Anglican School’s first XI on the Thursday, and returning home on the Friday.

The Ashburton College first XI has been training hard in the weeks leading up to the tour and enlisted the services of Mid Canterbury Cricket coach Garfield Charles for both the build-up, and as tour coach.

With the tour taking place in the second week of the school

holidays. Nine families of players are also making the trip across the Tasman to support the side and have a family holiday at the same time, meaning there will be no shortage of support on the boundary for the Ashburton boys.

After returning home the college cricket side will turn its attention to the Canterbury secondary schools’ cricket competition.

Wozniacki returns for a sixth ASB crack Another coup for Auckland’s ASB women’s tennis Classic with Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki letting slip on social media that’s she’s returning for a sixth crack at the title this summer.

Wozniacki, who is in Beijing at the China Open, made the announcement on Facebook.

“I can’t wait to start my 2019 year in one of my favourite cities for the ASB Classic. Such a fun place to play. Going one better in 2019! See my kiwi fans soon,” she said.

The 28-year-old Dane was always a target for tournament director Karl Budge, but the fact she’s now a Grand Slam champion had her in even more demand and tournament director Karl Budge is relieved to get her over the line.

“It’s nice that’s she’s excited about coming back and wanting to talk about it and nice to have a Grand Slam champion and former world number one coming back to Auckland.” Budge said.

The tournament now has two of the most recognisable faces in

Caroline Wozniacki tennis with Wozniacki and seven times Grand Slam champion Venus Williams also confirmed.

The duo have spent a combined 88 weeks at world number one. Wozniacki is a superstar of the sport having amassed more than $US31 million in prize money and capturing 29 WTA titles. She has featured on the cover of dozens of international publications such as Elle, Sports Illustrated and Cosmopolitan.

One senses Wozniacki’s return was never really in doubt. She has formed a close friendship with Budge over the years, dat-

ing back to his time working for the WTA Tour.

But more than that, the 28-year-old is a real competitor who is desperate to claim the title in Auckland having lost two finals, this year to German Julia Goerges and in 2015 to Venus Williams.

“She definitely wants to lift this trophy and when we look back at the superstars we have had here Caroline has been the most consistent performer. When you are weighing up who to go after, having someone who you know is going to be hitting balls in anger on Thursday or Friday is an attractive proposition for us,” Budge said.

It’s testament to the pulling power of the Auckland tournament which relies more on the good old fashioned Kiwi hospitality, proximity to the tournament hotel and attractions to lure players, plus the desire of those involved to ensure no stone is left unturned in making sure the players needs are looked after.

“It’s a great statement as to

how the ASB Classic is viewed among the players. It’s like test driving a car and once we have them in the car they tend to purchase it and we have had that with Caroline and is a great position to have one of the top two or three female athletes in sport deciding she wants to come back to the ASB Classic every year,” Budge said.

The rival Brisbane International is a WTA Premier series tournament carries four times the prize money of Auckland and considerably more ranking points while the Shenzhen tournament in China also in the same week has double the prize money.

Wozniacki captured her maiden Grand Slam title in January’s Australian Open final against Simona Halep, in a match that has gone down as one of the best in the Open era.

She went on to reach the semifinals at the WTA Premier tournament in Doha in February and won the traditional Wimbledon warm-up at Eastbourne.

The chance to bank a hefty $50,000 while watching summer cricket could be a thing of the past. After a two-year hiatus, the Tui Catch-a-Million promotion returned last summer with a massive $1,150,000 prize pool and rule changes that included a specified one-handed-sixcatching zone. However, New Zealand Cricket has indicated that the popular competition would not return this cricket season. “I believe that’s not happening this year,” NZC manager public affairs Richard Boock told Stuff. - NZME

Vuna to take a break The Warriors are resigned to losing one of their best young forwards temporarily with Joseph Vuna set to take a break from the NRL to embark on a Mormon mission.

The 20-year-old second-rower indicated that he will not be on deck next season as he prepares to put his career on hold while he follows his faith. Latta well represented Lisa Latta has a strong hand to play at Hastings on Saturday with a team of eight entered for the premier meeting, including Authentic Paddy and Five To Midnight in the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m).

Latta can’t fault Five To Midnight, who heads in to the feature race having won the Fasttrack Insurance 2000m open handicap at Hastings at his last start.

“He’s definitely come up a lot stronger this year,” Latta said.

“We didn’t give him that long off out in the wet and his summer coat is there now. He just looks amazing but it’s going to be a big step up to weight-for-age for him.”

Competing at weight-for-age conditions is something his stablemate Authentic Paddy is well versed in.

The nine-year-old has been running well without luck but will be reunited with jockey Trudy Thornton, who won the Gr.1 Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic on him in December last year, replacing Ryan Elliot who has been on-board for his last two starts.

“Having Trudy back on will be a big assist, he needs a strong rider,” Latta said.

“He’s just had no luck and all two starts back in, he got held up when he needed to get going and then he just got too far back at Hastings the other day.

“He’s really well, I couldn’t be happier with him, his work has been very good.”

Latta is undecided on whether she will have two or three runners in the Gr.2 Sacred Falls Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m), with promising filly Princess Amelie also entered in the Bostock New Zealand Spring Carnival Finale (1400m).

“I paid up for both races hoping for a good draw and didn’t get one in either,” she said, having drawn 16 and 10

Tiley pleased with Melt Trainer Nigel Tiley is pleased with high class three-year-old Melt and is looking forward to the challenge in Saturday’s Gr.2 Sacred Falls Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m), which has attracted a strong field of 16 runners. Group One-placed at two, Melt has won both of her starts this season including an impressive victory in the Gr.3 Northland Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Ruakaka last month.

Ruakaka duo primed Ruakaka trainers Chris Gibbs and Michelle Bradley are taking a strong team down to Hastings for the last day of the Hawke’s Bay carnival, but their biggest chances may be in the Bay For NZ Punter of the Year 2200. The newly formed training partnership will line-up last-start winners Amazing Az and Los Angeles in the 2200m undercard and they believe both four-yearolds are strong chances in the race.

“They are very exciting horses from a staying point of view,” Gibbs said.

Two-year-old impresses Two-year-old Showcasing filly Last Sight made the perfect start to her racing career with a debut win in the Burgundy @ Cambridge Stud 2YO (900m) at Ruakaka on Wednesday. The Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained juvenile finished runner-up in her 630m trial at Cambridge last month and has improved since that run according to her trainers.

The Kevin Hickman-owned filly overcame her outside barrier on Wednesday to trail the leader turning for home and quickened through near the rail to win by half a length over Tappy’s One. “She was a little bit green, but hit the line really well in her trial and she’s improved,” Wellwood said.

“We will have a good think about what to do with her, we do want to get some black-type with her but it just might be a bit of an ask from that draw.”

The Palmerston North-based trainer will however have Sir Nate and Platinum Mam’selle in the race.

“Sir Nate got held up a bit on the inside in his first up run, he’s had a trial since and he trialled up really well and his work has been very good,” she said.

“Platinum Mam’selle gets back a bit and that’s tough on a track like Hastings, so as long as she’s getting home well again I’ll be happy.”

Another runner of interest for the stable is Lincoln Falls who was very impressive on debut at Woodville on September 14.

“He’s a lovely horse, he’s worked well and we considered putting him in the Guineas but I just thought that it was just coming up a bit soon for him he’s still at that learning stage,” Latta said.

“I just want to get through Saturday before we decide where

to head with him. It’s a big step up from a mid-week at Woodville to premier day at Hastings and he’s still a little bit green and immature.”

Latta’s other runners are Kamada Lincoln who she said will appreciate the step-up to 2200m in the Bay Ford NZ Punter of the Year and Lincoln Raider who is fresh-up in the Dan De’Esposito Memorial (1200m).

Bary to launch on local carnival Hastings trainer John Bary is pleased with the talent in his yard at present and is looking forward to showcasing some of it on the final day of the Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival on Saturday.

“We’ve had three winners from seven runners this season already, a few nice placings and a couple fronting up so we are pretty happy with where we are

with an inside draw (3) beneficial for the on-speed runner.

“He’s still a work in progress and to let him roll and not fight with him has been the crucial thing and he is learning,” Bary said.

King Louis finished second behind Princess Amelie over 1200m and Bary said the son of Equiano continues to improve from both a fitness perspective and mentally.

“He is the most relaxed horse around the farm and in training you would put your kids on him.

“Last season he was a colt and when we gelded him we found one of his testicles was twisted 180 degrees and he associates it with pain. He is a work in progress to educate him that it is not going to hurt and he is getting better and better.

“At two he ran fifth in the Sires’ Produce (Gr.1, 1400m) and if you watch the replay he fought the jockey for 700m and then still finished it off.”

Bary will also be represented on the undercard by progressive mare Vinnie’s Volley, who steps up to a BenchMark 82 following back-to-back victories this term.

The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU) is set to host a girls’ rugby development session with some of New Zealand’s top female players in a bid to get more girls playing the game.

An opportunity had arisen for Mid Canterbury to enter a team in the first ever South Island provincial tournament for girls’ sevens to be held in Timaru on

November 10 and 11 this year, so the MCRU put the word out a few weeks ago, but so far there had not been enough interest to form a side.

MCRU rugby development officer Jason Ree wasn’t one to give up easily, though. He had a coach lined up, and the team kit ready to go, now he just needed the players.

“We’re trying to make things easy for them so all they have to

do is turn up and play,” Ree said.

“But there’s only so much you can do to lead a horse to water.”

The New Zealand Rugby Union was focused on growing the women’s game nationally at the moment, and Ree was determined to do the same in Mid Canterbury.

So, he’d asked Black Fern Kendra Cocksedge – the women’s rugby development officer for the Crusaders rugby region – to come

to Ashburton to hold a development session, and bring some of her national team-mates with her. Cocksedge had jumped at the opportunity and Ree said the session would take place on October 17, in the first week of term four, at around 4pm.

One training session had already been held for the under-15 girls’ side and a couple of players turned up, while others put in apologies. That was a start, but

more players were needed.

Ree said 10 to 12 players would be required to make Mid Canterbury’s first under-15 girls’ sevens side a reality.

Girls didn’t necessarily need to have prior rugby experience. As long as they could run, the catch and pass type skills could be taught, Ree said.

The main prerequisite was that girls had to be aged under-15 as of January 1, 2018.
