Ashburton farmers are being warned to be vigilant after suspicious activity on a Rakaia farm. Gareth Evans posted to the Facebook group NZ Dairy Farmers alerting the public to someone who was seen on his property acting suspiciously. The post said that someone was seen driving a gun-metal coloured vehicle having a look at his calves at around 8am. However, after the vehicle was approached, it sped away. Later on it returned. “Bulls are worth gold at the moment, I’d hate to see good people lose their livelihood,” the post said. He has since moved his stock to safer
paddocks. It has been reported 55 bull calves were stolen from a farm on Two Chains road earlier this week. Earlier this year around 500 dairy cows were stolen from a property just south of Ashburton. Police are still investigating the theft. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury chairman Michael Salversen said people needed to be aware of their surroundings. “I think part of the whole things is sharing information,” he said. “So if you think people are snooping around then let everyone know and what that means is that people are aware of what’s happening.” Salversen said bull and heifer calves are currently worth between $400 and
$500 each. “So if 20 go missing, that’s $10,000 just like that,” he said. Farmers should also look into taking down gates and adding more fences to reduce ways into their property as well as setting up motion detection cameras at high risk areas. Constable Michael Kneebone of Rangiora police said regardless of property size, ideally stock numbers should be checked once a week. “Neighbours should make a note of any movement of stock, particularly if it’s at an unusual time of the year,” he said. “If possible, make a note of any suspicious vehicle’s registration number and a description and direction of the vehicle and what it was carrying.”
