If Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel has her way the ward system of electing district councillors would be scrapped. We are one district and councillors should represent the interests of every person in that district, she said during a workshop yesterday to review both councillor numbers and the way those councillors are elected. “I’m quite comfortable to go out for consultation on voting at large across the whole district. We all have a vision that’s for the betterment of our district,”
she said. Her bid to have councillors at the next local body election elected at large failed to gain any support. Favel also gave her support to reducing councillor numbers from 12 to nine and fellow members of the representation review committee councillors Russell Ellis, Neil Brown, Stuart Wilson and Peter Reveley agreed. The number reduction will bring Ashburton into line with population per councillor ratios that are similar to most other local authorities. The working group developed the proposal for change in December and it
has since been through a pre-consultation process that attracted 131 community responses. And the response was overwhelming, 75 per cent of those who responded agreed that councillor numbers should drop to nine. There will be some minor tweaking to the boundaries of all three wards.
