An Ashburton man who accidently shot his mate in the wrist while duck shooting last year has spoken out to warn others of the need to take extra precautions with firearms.

He was convicted and discharged in the Ashburton District Court on a charge of causing injury through careless use of a firearm last year, on the condition he delivered a safety message ahead of duck-shooting season this year.

It was a message he was happy to convey. While he escaped a penalty, the man had paid in excess of $3000 to his victim to cover costs of rehabilitation not covered by ACC. The man, who was granted name suppression at the request of his victim, was duck shooting when his loaded shotgun discharged after it caught in the bush material used to construct the maimai they were shooting from.

“I dropped it (the gun) – it went off and hit my mate. It gave me one hell of a fright,” he said.

“You can never be too careful with loaded firearms,” he said.

“I was lucky, it could have been a whole lot worse – it could easily have been a fatality.”

With about 18 years shooting behind him, the incident left him shaken but has not put him off returning to the maimai this season. However, he will be taking extra precautions to avoid any repeat of last year’s disaster.

“There’s a group of us who shoot together – we talked about it and decided to go back this year,” he said.

Alcohol was ruled out as a factor in the accident in the immediate aftermath.

Judge Joanna Maze acknowledged this during the court appearance but took the opportunity to warn hunters of the inherent danger of drinking while using firearms.

“We have a definite no-alcohol policy when we are shooting,” the man said.

Good turnout expected for cancer seminar

Organisers of Ashburton’s first cancer research seminar expect a positive turnout from people eager to learn more about ways the disease is being tackled.

The What’s New in Cancer Research? Genes & Lifestyle information evening, organised by the Cancer Society and C4 – the Canterbury Comprehensive Cancer Centre – will be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this evening, from 6pm.

A similar series of programmes has been run successfully in Christchurch, and if all goes well, they hope to take the concept to other centres.

Medical doctors, scientists and researchers will each be allowed 10 minutes to talk, and will then field questions from the audience.

Associate Professor Gabi Dachs, who works at the School of Medicine, attached to Christchurch Hospital, said they were already impressed with the response it has generated in Ashburton.

“It’s looking really exciting,” she said. “I can’t believe how many people have signed up. We thought we’d get about 20 and it’s going to be a lot bigger.”

Her area of expertise looks into what makes cancer so hard to treat and what the medical profession can do to treat it better.

During the evening, she will be discussing the use of vitamin C in a seminar titled: Vitamin C: snake oil or a sensible addition to cancer therapy?

While she said information on the subject varied widely and “seems to be a very controversial area” she was looking forward to offering a balanced scientific response.

“There are believers and non-

believers and we’re trying to put science in the middle,” she said.

“Some say it’s natural, some say it’s rubbish. We have no answer yet, but will be presenting all the points and (results of) what we have measured in cancer patients.”

While the 10 minutes’ speaking time may seem short, she said it would allow enough time to present an overview of the varied research done in Christchurch.

Subjects include; Decoding our genes to prevent cancer (by Dr Logan Walker), The New Zealand Familial Breast Cancer Study (by scientist Vanessa Lattimore), Immunotherapy: rescuing immune cells to treat cancer (by Dr Margaret Currie), How do fat cells stimulate breast cancer? (by Dr Elisabeth Phillips), Does body weight affect chemotherapy? (by PhD student Rebekah Crake), Vitamin C: snake oil or a sensible addition to cancer therapy? (by Dr Gabi Dachs) and The latest isn’t always the greatest … Why we need randomised trials in medicine, (by Dr David Gibbs).

Dr Dachs said she works alongside all the speakers on a daily basis and they all felt it was important to talk with “people who are the end users” to gain a different perspective.

“The more we find out and the more we know, the longer people can live with cancer,” she said.

“There’s been huge progress in treatments that allow people with cancer to live longer.”

The event, presented by the Mackenzie Cancer Research Group, will be brought to Ashburton with the support of Mackenzie Charitable Foundation, C4 - Canterbury Comprehensive Cancer Centre, the Cancer Society and the University of Otago.

Handbag auction ready to entertain

A charity auction raising funds for White Ribbon and CanBead will be held on Saturday night.

Handbags and Gladrags takes place at The MSA Ashburton, featuring live music, entertainment and guest speakers.

About 70 quality handbags are up for grabs, including 40 that people can bid on in the main mystery auction, and the rest will form lucky ticket giveaways, raffles and a black bag silent auction.

Event organiser, Anna Arrowsmith, said all the bags had been donated locally and are filled with an array of gifts and products.

CanInspire Charitable Trust founder, Sarah Clifford, will be speaking at the event, as well colour and style coach, professional speaker and author, Chryssie Woodham.

The auctioneer will be Craig Harrison.

Arrowsmith, the Families Without Violence co-ordinator, said it would be a great event for a good cause.

“It’s just something different to have a fun night,” she said.

“We will be using the money to prevent violence towards families and educate and promote safe and healthy families.

“Funds raised for CanInspire will go towards their ongoing workshops in the community.

Tickets are $20 per person, or participants can book a table of six, including fizz on arrival and a cheese platter to share.

Tickets are available from Community House Mid Canterbury and doors open at 6pm.

Somerset House tenants warned Somerset House tenants have been warned to be on the lookout for young people trespassing in the building.

Groups of youth have been moved on after being found in the multi-storey building on the

corner of East and Burnett streets several times in recent weeks.

On Tuesday evening passersby were alerted to suspicious behaviour of several youngsters outside the main entrance and in the lane running adjacent to the building.

College employment expo educates students

Ashburton College students had the opportunity to discover what employment options are available in their local community this week.

A variety of businesses attended, ranging from EA Networks to ANZCO, the Ashburton Guardian and the Ashburton District Council.

Careers Counsellor Teri Nichol said it was great for the students to have the opportunity to see the many opportunities with local businesses.

“They can see all the people at the front of the business, but don’t realise behind the scenes the variety of jobs that go in to making that business run,” she said.

Nichol said last year the students had listened to guest speakers, but had not really had the opportunity to interact with businesses.

“We want the students to know that if they do go away and study to be accountants or similar, there are job opportunities back where they came from,” she said.

Signs promising for local duck shooters

Signs are looking promising for opening day of the duck shooting season on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury hunter George Butterick is primed, ready for action – and hoping for a “good southerly and an overcast day”.

“The pond has been fed and the decoys are ready to go,” he said.

“There’s good duck numbers around this year, there’s been plenty of feed so there was a bit more cover for the ducklings and a lot less predators around.

“It should be a pretty good season.”

Ideally, duck shooters want “a bit of wind” to prevent the birds from circling high and to encourage them to come into the decoys on the water.

“If it’s cold and windy the birds use a lot more energy to keep warm, so they’ve got to keep moving and feeding. On a warm day they tend to sit on the bank in the sun and roost,” Butterick said.

Game officer Rhys Adams said a duck count conducted in March indicated hunters would be in luck, although mallard duck numbers, were marginally down on recent years.

“For the Canterbury plains, overall, the dabbling duck numbers were a smidgeon below average for the 11 years we have been conducting the survey,” Adams said.

“Populations fluctuate from year to year as shown by our monitoring, which has been undertaken since 2007 for mallard ducks and since 1975 for paradise shelduck.”

The predicted drought-ridden summer never struck, in fact summer hardly happened this year with mild temps and regular rainfalls boding well for ducks, Adams said.

“Compared to last year there is certainly more water around meaning more natural ponds, river braids and backwaters,” he said.

“Puddled water on paddocks

and wetlands can provide feeding opportunities for ducks too so we anticipate some well-conditioned birds.

“In a national context Mid Canterbury has moderate to high numbers of mallard duck and offers enviable hunting opportunities for hunters in a national context. In fact, many hunters travel from as far as the North Island to hunt Mid Canterbury on opening weekend and through the season which runs until the end of July.”

Paradise shelduck were counted in February, at a time when the birds congregate to moult feathers.

A number of irrigation ponds in the district, including Lake Hood and the Ashburton Lakes, are used by paradise shelduck for moulting.

Approximately 1700 paradise shelduck were counted moulting in the Ashburton Lakes area.

Lake Emma is a popular place for hunters on opening weekend as are ponds on the surrounding farmland, Adams said.

Collegiate Rugby Club grounds vandalised

A Collegiate Rugby Club volunteer got a shock when she discovered the club’s grounds had been vandalised yesterday morning.

Treasurer Belinda McArthur said she had arrived at the club to collect a delivery of drinks for the coming weekend and noticed the damage.

The in-goal area had been damaged by a vehicle, while one section of chain fence was torn out, with the posts snapped at the base.

“It is just really, really disappointing,” said McArthur.

“There are people that give up so many hours’ volunteering and this is just disrespectful.”

The vandalism comes just days before the start JAB rugby season, with five games set to be held at the ground and more than 100 children playing in Collegiate colours this year.

“We are going to have games here this weekend and this is the kind of thing you don’t want the

kids to be seeing,” she said.

“The damage can be fixed, but it is just the hassle that is the main problem.”

The incident has been reported to police.

This is the second dose of vandalism Mid Canterbury rugby clubs have been victim of in 2017, after the Southern Rugby Club saw its fields at the Hinds Domain ripped up by a vehicle in mid-March.

Jobseeker numbers creeping up

The Ashburton District’s unemployment rate might be low, but job seeker numbers are rising.

Ministry of Social Development figures for the March quarter show there were 337 registered jobseekers in the district, up 6 per cent on the same quarter last year.

March quarter job seeker numbers have been steadily climbing for the past four years, from 269 in 2014.

The district, however, is still running well below the national average, 4.9 per cent for the quarter.

Statistics New Zealand released its labour market and household statistics for the March quarter yesterday, and while numbers were not available for individual local authorities, MSD quarterly figures were

and show that with the district’s change in numbers is minimal, unemployment is still hovering around 2 per cent.

The district had a 10 year unemployment low of 1.6 per cent and a high of 3.3 per cent.

The March quarter figures show that across all categories of beneficiary total numbers rose to 1050, up from 1001 last year.

The most significant increase was in support living numbers, up from 382 to 407.

The age bracket where beneficiary numbers increased the most was 25 to 39 year olds.

Nationally there were 6000 fewer people were unemployed in the March quarter. Unemployed people are those who are available to work, and who had either actively sought work or had a new job to start within the next four weeks.

CELEBRATING OUR YOUTH – Student Volunteer Week May 1-7

Dedicated volunteer From May 1–7, Student Volunteer Week takes place across the country. The Ashburton Youth Council (AYC) has teamed up with Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury (VMSC) to help get the word out, and students of all ages are urged to give volunteering a go. To celebrate our young people dedicating their time and service to the cause, the Guardian will run a profile each day highlighting their efforts.

Ashburton Borough School student Grace Richan may only be 12 years old but she is already a dedicated young volunteer.

Grace started volunteering when she was in Year 7 at school and currently volunteers for her school’s student council, road patrol and her netball team.

“I am a leader of the school student council for which I help to oversee and run activities within the school including assemblies, junior liaison, and sports committee,” she said.

“With PALS (Physical Activity Leader), I help to run fun activities and games during breaks for younger students at school. I have umpired junior netball games after

attending an umpiring course run

by Netball Mid Canterbury. I also spend half an hour after school on Wednesdays to help with Road Patrol.”

She said her volunteering enabled her to attend a national young leader’s day and last term she attended a leadership course provided by Rotary.

“At the leadership course, I enjoyed listening to the guest speakers and Ray King who talked about their experiences with different leadership roles and where their passion for helping others has led them.

“It was cool to meet other kids from the district as well.”

She said her umpiring fits around her own netball games so that helps her to keep everything balanced.

Newcomers’ Network hosts dinner The Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network held its latest Mix It Up! dinner party on Friday, representing a wide range of cultures from across the globe.

Co-hosted by Ashburton Museum and Heritage Centre director Tanya Robinson, the theme was Epic Kiwi Road Trips, in-

spired by the Kiwi classic Goodbye Pork Pie. Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network co-ordinator SophieClaire Violette said each table was dressed with a paper tablecloth and participants were encouraged to use them as a canvas to create their own representa-

tion of a New Zealand road trip.

During the evening, it was announced the Ashburton Lions Club sponsored one of the newcomers to go on an eight-day outdoor pursuits course in Central Otago.

Airlines warned by Congress Members of Congress have warned US airlines to improve customer services or they will step in following global outrage over a passenger being dragged from a United Airlines flight.

House transportation committee chairman Bill Shuster said carriers should use the notoriety of April’s forcible removal of Kentucky doctor David Dao to make long-needed improvements.

“Seize this opportunity,” the Republican told United chief Oscar Munoz and other airline executives at a hearing.

Otherwise, “we’re going to act and you’re not going to like it”, he said, without giving specifics.

Several members of Congress have introduced legislation to ban the bumping of

United Airlines says it will raise the payment limit to $10,000 to customers who give up seats on oversold flights as it continues to deal with fallout of a passenger being violently dragged from his seat.

Munoz apologised repeatedly for the April 9 incident in which Dao was forcibly removed from a flight.

Munoz vowed to do better as he and other airline executives faced tough questions from lawmakers.

“It was a mistake of epic proportions, clearly, in hind-

sight,” Munoz said.

He said Dao was treated in a way that no customer – or individual – should be treated.

United has taken steps to reduce overbooking of flights since the incident and would raise to $US10,000 the limit on payments to customers who give up seats on oversold flights, Munoz said.

The airline said it would also improve employee training.

“This is a turning point for United and our 87,000 professionals,” a contrite Munoz said.

United moved to head off criticism last week by reaching a confidential settlement with Dao and issuing new policies designed to prevent customer- service failures.

Musician dies Ultrasound to diagnose heart failure? at his birthday concert

Queensland researchers hope lung ultrasounds could provide a quick, easy and less invasive way to diagnose heart failure in elderly patients with shortness of breath.

Now in its final stages, the government-funded study recruited 400 patients for a clinical trial to explore how the ultrasound method compared to the more traditional chest x-ray.

“Lung ultrasounds can diagnose heart failure within

minutes of a patient arriving at hospital,” Queensland health minister Cameron Dick said yesterday.

“It is a quick, simple, accurate, cheap and less-invasive procedure that can save time, money and lives.”

It’s hoped the new method will make it easier to know if a patient’s shortness of breath is a sign of lung disease or heart failure.

Lead researcher Dr Kylie Baker, of Ipswich Hospital,

said emergency department doctors could correctly pinpoint the right condition within three minutes using the ultrasound technique.

“Consequently, elderly patients are started on the right treatments straight away and aren’t at risk of adverse events because of incorrect diagnosis and incorrect treatments,” she said.

The findings are being analysed and prepared for publication.

Prince Harry heading to Sydney The last time Prince Harry dropped into Sydney for a visit two years ago he was inundated with kisses and marriage proposals.

However it’ll be sport rather than love that the 32-year-old royal will focus on when he makes his much-anticipated return to the harbour city.

The fifth-in-line to the throne will be in town to cast a royal eye over preparations for the Invictus Games, which Sydney is hosting in October 2018.

Organisers of the Sydney games tweeted their excitement about the royal visit.

When Col. Bruce Hampton slowly fell to his knees during the finale of his star-studded birthday concert, fans and musicians alike thought it was another one of his quirky performances.

Fourteen-year-old guitar phenom Brandon “Taz” Niederauer tore into a blistering solo as the 70-year-old man lay motionless at his feet, his arm draped over a speaker.

For several more minutes, dozens of musicians jammed away to one of Hampton’s favourite songs.

The fans danced and the musicians smiled as they waited for him to get up.

But Col. Bruce never did.

The eccentric guitarist and singer known as the forefather of the jam band scene died after collapsing at the end of the show billed by Atlanta’s Fox Theatre as “Hampton 70: A Celebration of Col. Bruce Hampton”.

He had turned 70 a day earlier.

Affleck moves out Ben Affleck has reportedly moved out of his family home. The 44-year-old actor had been continuing to live with his estranged wife Jennifer Garner and their three children – Violet, 11, Seraphina, eight and Samuel, five – despite officially filing for divorce from the actress last month, but it has now been reported he has moved into a new home nearby.

A source close to Jennifer said: “They didn’t want to alarm the kids or have them feel like Ben was leaving, so he has slowly moved out over time. But, as of Monday, he will be living at his new home. They really want the kids to continue with their same routine.”

Be safe when you go off to shoot ducks

D

uck shooting season is on the doorstep and come Saturday morning shots will reverberate across Mid Canterbury.

The district is one of the best in the country when it comes to bagging game birds and hunters come from as far afield as the North Island to shoot.

In the past decade irrigation ponds have provided additional habitat for waterfowl and mallard and paradise shelducks have made the most of it, resulting in more maimai springing up.

With so many duck shooters set to make the most of the season the safety message becomes imperative.

Last year a local man found himself in court after his loaded shotgun accidently discharged while shooting with friends.

His mate sustained a serious wrist injury as a consequence.

While the victim has made a full recovery, he was unable to work for some time after the incident and the man responsible was shaken to the core about what might have been.

The accident occurred when the gun became hooked in the brush material used to construct the maimai the pair were using at the time.

In some respects it could be viewed as an unavoidable accident. The group in question have a no-alcohol policy while shooting, however, the owner of the firearm still feels responsible.

Every year hunters are wounded or, sadly, killed at the hands of friends or fellow hunters.

Many of these tragedies could be avoided with just a few extra precautions.

The message is particularly applicable to younger or inexperienced hunters. Those who have been around the traps have a part to play in helping educate newcomers to the sport.

Get an early night before heading out hunting, keep safety catches on when not taking aim and, above all, leave the booze at home!

fter we spoke with the Ashburton District Council about their hopes of reclassifying Thompsons Track as a state highway, yesterday the NZTA told us traffic has not increased enough to be reclassified in this way.

A spokesperson said the agency had a criteria by which a local road could be reclassified.

For example, a road like Thompsons Track would need to have more than 3000 vehicles per day or 400 heavy commercial vehicles per day, to be considered.

However, many of you are telling us that increasing demands on the road, due to traffic and recent wet weather, are creating dangerous potholes that need to be addressed.

On Facebook, David told us council needs to gain a higher contribution of RUC income from Central Government to maintain the roads and as part of that Thompsons Track should be reclassified as a state highway.

David That photo typifies the problem with Thompson’s Track and many other roads in Mid Canterbury, it has been patched, and patched and patched with a bit of hotmix tossed into a hole. That then blows out within a few weeks and some kind soul comes out and diligently puts a road cone next to it and stands it up again every few days for many months until another half-hearted repair is done.It needs to be dug out, fixed properly and then maybe the state of our roads might improve.Thompson’s Track has become a major transport arterial and very popular tourist route into the MacKenzie and Southern Lakes and will only get busier as SH1 through Ashburton grinds into gridlock due to the Council’s inability to commit to a second bridge.Roads wear out on a “tonnes carried per kilometer driven” basis and RUC and Excise effectively charge motorists on a “tonnes carried per kilometre driven” regime. Council need to gain a higher contribution of this RUC income from Central Government to maintain the roads on which that tax was earned and as part of that Thompson’s Track should be reclassified as a State Highway.

Eartha Like I said last week... let’s wait until another person gets killed on this dangerous road, then we will consider resealing. This is pretty much a state highway already. Travellers heading to Queenstown and fairlie and Geraldine take this route, Queenstown being one of the biggest tourist attractions in the South Island makes for a extremely busy road. They need to close the road and re do the whole stretch, there isn’t one part that doesn’t need doing. Closing will be a pain but no use re sealing and having trucks driving over at the same time- it’s a waste of time.

Grahame I think it’s time the Council stopped being the ‘Al Bundy’ of Ashburton who hands out ratepayers money to any organisation who asks for it and divert some of this money into the roading budget. The council has put a heap of money into local amenities and that’s good, but now it’s time to give that a rest and spend some extra funds on making our roads fit for purpose and safe for all users.

Fairfax moves fast after merger rejection

By Pattrick Smellie News publisher Fairfax Media is already moving to cut back its investment in New Zealand news production, with Australian-based chief executive Greg Hywood saying the “disappointing” decision by the New Zealand Commerce Commission to allow a merger with its largest rival news producer, NZME, makes “further publishing frequency changes and consolidation of titles ... an inevitability”.

The competition regulator declined the merger in a final decision yesterday morning, saying NZME and Fairfax had failed “by a considerable margin” to convince it that the clear commercial benefits of the merger would outweigh the potential detriment to the quality and variety of news available to New Zealand news consumers.

“While we cannot weigh in dollar terms the net benefits against the detrimental societal impacts we expect to see, in our assessment this is not a finely balanced decision,” said commission chair Mark Berry, confirming a draft decision to decline the merger last November on an application that

NZME shares dropped 5.6 per cent to 84 cents immediately after trading opened on the NZX yesterday morning.

An appeal for judicial review can be lodged to the High Court within 20 days, but Hywood appeared to indicate that Fairfax would begin immediately to shrink its New Zealand operations, which the struggling ASX-listed publisher has made clear it wants to quit.

“The regulator’s failure to grasp the commercial and competi-

tive realities of modern media is disappointing,” said Hywood in a statement. “This decision does nothing to address the challenge of the global search and social giants, which produce no local journalism, employ very few New Zealanders, and pay minimal, if any, local taxes.

“In light of the decision, an even greater focus on cost efficiency will be necessary.

“Moving to the next stage of our New Zealand publishing model will involve reshaping how we deliver our journalism to local com-

munities,” said Hywood. “Ensuring the ongoing sustainability of the New Zealand business will require continued diversification of our digital revenue base, building on recent progress of monetising our audiences through new advertising products, and businesses such as Stuff Fibre and Events.”

The company would be “carefully reviewing” the commission’s reasoning, contained in a 357page decision.

At its media conference, the commission was at pains to reject the proposition from legal counsel for Fairfax and NZME that it was operating outside the bounds of the Commerce Act by basing its decision on concerns about media ‘plurality’ – the range and quantity of views published in a single media market.

“We reject the submissions that there is a category of consequences that we are required to ignore,” said Berry. Australian and New Zealand case law made the commission confident that non-commercial factors could be weighed against commercial considerations to reject a merger application.

NZME and Fairfax argued commercial benefits of between $40

million and $200 million over five years if the merger went ahead, and that it was vital if the growing impact of global social media and search giants Facebook and Google was to be combated effectively. Those two alone were soaking up around 80 per cent of online advertising revenues at a time when revenue from the traditional newspaper publishing business is in steep and apparently irrevocable decline.

Fairfax executive editor Sinead Boucher accused the commission on Twitter of a “hypocritical” decision, claiming it had rejected the suggestion that Facebook and Google were competitors for the advertising dollar when the commission itself had spent “45 per cent of its own ad budget on nonpaying Facebook, YouTube”.

The commission said it recognised the “very real commercial pressures” on both print and online news producers, but concluded that the potential loss of competing views and voices in the media represented a greater threat to New Zealand democracy and news consumers than the threat of reduced advertising revenue to the would-be merged publishers.

Fonterra launches pop-up shop Fonterra has launched its first Anchor milk pop-up store at Super Brand Mall in Shanghai, bringing a slice of New Zealand to one of China’s busiest shopping complexes.

Super Brand Mall attracts more than 20 million shoppers per year and boasts 250,000 square metres of retail space.

The full Anchor China range of UHT milks, milk powders, cheese and butter is on display at the store, where shoppers can also craft their own recipes, view videos of New Zealand farms and play interactive games.

Famous Chinese actor Tong Dawei joined the store launch event, sampling products and helping

to develop recipes using Anchor products.

“Today’s Chinese consumers are much more brand conscious and brand loyal than previous generations, so finding ways to create experiences and emotional connections with the brand is a key part of our ongoing brand-building strategy for Anchor in China,” said Christina Zhu, President Fonterra Greater China.

The New Zealand hemp industry is disappointed with an agreement signed on Friday between New Zealand and Australian food safety authorities which will enable hemp seed to be sold as food.

“After 18 years of consultation, the Food Ministers are still treating us like a drug crop and only allowing hemp seed foods.

“This is a massive missed economic opportunity,” New Zealand Hemp Industry Association (NZHIA) chairman Mack McIntosh said.

“In a short time we could have been leading the world and all sorts of industries would have developed not just in the seed and grain industry,” McIntosh said.

“The current decision means that we will not have access to the food and beverages from hemp leaves and flowering tops.

“The high value nutrition potential is massive, phenols to fragrances are available from this one arable crop and our farmers want access to the revenue streams from the whole plant, not just the seed.

“The seed and grain industry will scale up to meet the consumer demand and bring jobs and investment into regional New Zealand.

“The hemp industry could be much bigger if we include the food and beverages produced from the 20 per cent of the crop left in the field as leaf and flowering tops,” McIntosh said.

“This is a brand new opportunity for farmers to grow a crop and for the region to significantly add value by processing the hemp into high value nutrition hemp products. But 80 per cent of the potential will be missed, because hemp is still considered to be like growing a drug.

“The NZHIA is well positioned to represent the industry on the cross-agency working group which is being set up.

“We’ve worked with the Government in the past on the interagency working group which came up with the hemp regulations in 2006 so it makes sense for us to be part of these discussions,” McIntosh said.

Dairy product prices on the rise again

Public perception on group’s agenda

Dairy product prices advanced at the Global Dairy Trade auction, increasing for the fourth consecutive time amid strong demand.

The GDT price index climbed 3.6 per cent from the previous auction two weeks ago to $US3166. Some 22,633 tonnes of product was sold, down from 22,927 tonnes at the previous auction.

Whole milk powder rose 5.2 per cent to $US3233 a tonne.

“Buyer demand was robust,” AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby said in a note.

“There was strong participation in the auction by buyers from North Asia,” according to Kilsby.

“A lack of profitability in China’s own dairy farming sector has limited expansion of some farming operations and is expected to have some impact on their domestic milk supply.”

At the latest GDT auction, butter milk powder soared 21.8 per cent to $US1859 a tonne, while rennet casein jumped 10.4 per cent to $US6775 a tonne.

Anhydrous milk fat gained 4.7

per cent to $US6185 a tonne, while cheddar added 4.6 per cent to $US3666 a tonne.

Butter increased 1.1 per cent to $US4911 a tonne, while lactose rose 1.1 per cent to $US941 a tonne.

Bucking the trend, skim milk powder slipped 0.9 per cent to $US1982 a tonne.

Skim milk powder prices remain under pressure due to the massive stocks of this product that have built up in Europe, Kilsby said.

“The SMP offered by Fonterra from both New Zealand and Australia achieved a small premium over equivalent product offered

by European dairy company Arla Foods.”

The New Zealand dollar traded at 69.25 US cents at 1.06pm in New York on Tuesday, compared with 69.07 US cents at 5pm in Wellington the previous day.

There were 106 winning bidders out of 163 participating at the 15-round auction.

The number of qualified bidders rose to 548, up from 541 at the previous auction.

A steering group focused on changing the public perception of the dairy industry will meet in Ashburton next week.

Federated Farmers aims to bring industry-good bodies, farmers and dairy companies together to discuss how best to move forward.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy industry spokesperson Nathan Currie said dairy farmers were facing tough challenges in the face of mounting public criticism of the industry.

“We’ve had a roller-coaster ride over the past two or three years and we’ve got some serious challenges ahead of us, especially when it comes to dealing with public perception,” he said.

“One of the biggest concerns for us in Mid Canterbury is securing the right to continue to farm, the way it’s going pub-

Nathan Currie lic perception is heading in a very negative direction for us – there’s no doubt about the fact that we need to make some changes in our dairying sector.

“There’s a group of us working very hard at the moment to form a steering group going to focus on what we are doing and how we can do it better. A lot of it will come down to science and what we are doing on farm.”

Currie said significant changes, to a large extent influenced by pressure from environmental groups, would impact on the arable sector and graziers.

“It could end up being a big cost across the board and it would have a huge impact on the district’s economy,” he said.

“Steering group, early stages – we are looking for interest from dairy farmers across the board.

“We are trying to get Fonterra, LIC, DairyNZ and Federated Farmers together, with the aim of singing from the same song sheet.

“There’s some really good science with DairyNZ and LIC but I don’t think it’s getting the air time that it needs and we need to be demonstrating what we are doing to the public.”

Our Annual General Meeting was held on April 28, 2017 in the Senior Centre. President Russell Anstiss welcomed the Mayor Donna Favel and 42 members. Apologies were received and the Minutes of the 2016 Annual General Meeting were read and confirmed.

Russell Anstiss presented his Annual Report. Membership numbers are steady and the two bus trips and three lunches have continued to be popular.

The committee were thanked for their willing participation in all activities and Muriel Lay (Treasurer) and Elizabeth Imrie (Secretary) were thanked for their work for the Association.

Muriel Lay presented the Financial Report and unfortunately this signaled her last duty as Treasurer. Her retirement was announced and Aine Whiting presented Muriel with a floral tribute and Elizabeth Imrie read a letter of thanks for the meticulous work and dedication Muriel has given to the Association for 12 years.

Coles out with concussion The world’s best hooker is now under a concussion cloud.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd revealed today at the team naming media session that Dane Coles is actually battling concussion-like symptoms as well as the dodgy calf that has been advanced as the cause, in recent weeks, of his prolonged absence.

The Highlanders match on March 18 was Coles’ last outing.

He had a knee injury before the calf became an issue. A review of the Highlanders match DVD revealed no apparent head knock.

“Colesy’s situation is complicated by the fact that ... subsequent to his knee injury, he not only developed a calf strain but also some headaches.

“He is now under a return to play protocol for concussion.

The source of that is completely unknown to us,” Boyd says.

They cannot load his calf as he is getting headaches when he ups his heart rate and intensity at training. So any return date for Coles is unknown until he clears those symptoms.

Boyd was not 100 per cent certain but did not know of any

history of concussion with his hooker.

“There’s no smoke and daggers stuff. At the end of the day, he has started to return to train and developed some headaches,” Boyd says.

“It’s not normal, but if you look at it in context, because of his knee injury, the first part of his rehab was no training at all so, if there were symptoms post

the game that would come out under exercise, they were not apparent.”

Ardie Savea, who has moved back to No 8 for Friday night’s match against the Stormers was disappointed for his teammate.

“As a team, we knew he had a knee or calf injury, but we (only recently) found out about this.

There is a protocol to go through, so we just wish him all the best.

“Concussion is worrying, but I’m not too sure how serious this is. You would have to speak to the doctor about it,” says Savea.

The Coles news is the last thing All Blacks coach Steve Hansen wants to hear just days after his captain Kieran Read needed a thumb operation.

Former All Black legend, Sir Colin Meads, has been admitted to hospital with “stomach pains”.

The much-loved rugby great, 80, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in August.

Yesterday, he spoke from his bed at Waikato hospital and said he wasn’t feeling great.

“I came in yesterday. I had stomach pains so they are doing some scans.”

His life, with the disease, hit the headlines late last year when it was linked with his controversial use of a water-based product called Te Kiri Gold.

The water’s producer has since pulled back from claims it was a game changer for cancer-sufferers.

A disclaimer has gone up on the site that Te Kiri Gold is not a medicine.

Meads had previously claimed it gave him a “better quality life”.

However, yesterday he was less confident about its actual benefits when asked if he was finding it helpful to keep drinking the water.

“Well, not really, I wouldn’t be here otherwise.”

President Bernie Tutty welcomed members to our April meeting. The National Anthem was sung and apologies accepted.

Two new members - Joy Arthur and Susan Wilson were inducted and warmly welcomed into our club.

The name for our NZ Clubs is now “Friendship” and at our recent committee meeting we felt we should follow the lead of other clubs in the area and rename as “Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club”.

We took this recommendation to the meeting and it was moved and seconded and unanimously agreed that we do this.

Avis Kingsland our trip convenor spoke on our successful mystery bus trip, and Avis also gave a mini-talk of a recent cruise she had been on.

After morning tea we welcomed our main speaker Jeanette Cuthbertson who is an expert dahlia grower.

Dahlias originated from Mexico and were thought to be potatoes until they flowered.

Jeanette and John have a property at Hinds

called Paradise Gardens and have been growing Dahlias for over 30 years and showing them for over 20 years.

Jeanette took us through the various stages of hard work involved to get these flowers to perfection, and as she bought many varieties to show us we were very impressed to see the final results.

Some of our members were delighted to take some home also.

Jeanette was suitably thanked by Speaker Convenor Julie Begg.

The President closed the meeting and read the thought for the month which was: Good friends are like stars, you don’t always see them, but you know they are there.

Our next meeting is May 10.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday April 27. Apologies were received.

We sang the RSA song accompanied by Hope McIntosh on piano. No birthdays this month.

Sympathy was given to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one.

Sick members were wished a speedy recovery.

Our speaker was introduced: Craig Goodwin from the council. He had lots of information about wheelie bins and green crate. Glass goes to Auckland. Craig gave a lot of time to answer questions and listen to comments.

One of the main concerns is the lack of storage space for people living in small properties. Most would like a smaller recycling bin.

Craig was thanked for coming to clarify things for members.

Aussie aura a thing of the past Veteran Simon Mannering admits New Zealand have been overawed by Mal Meninga and his allconquering Australian team.

Not this time.

Friday’s Test between the Kiwis and Kangaroos is shaping as a battle of wills and minds, something 41-Test stalwart Mannering says the Kiwis have struggled to get right.

The Kangaroos are hot favourites for Friday’s trans-Tasman clash in Canberra as well as the end-of-season World Cup, but some of aura has been taken away from the side in recent time.

Paul Gallen and Corey Paker are retired, Greg Inglis and Matt Scott are missing due to injury and Johnathan Thurston is racing the clock to overcome a calf problem.

The Kiwis are fielding an allstar spine of Warriors quartet Kieran Foran, Shaun Johnson, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Issac Luke.

Lock and Dally M co-winner Jason Taumalolo is arguably the best player in the game - having averaged more than 200m for North Queensland this year.

All of this has served to feed into the belief of the Kiwis side

For the Kiwis, Mannering’s Warriors teammates Foran, Johnson, Luke and Tuivasa- Sheck shape as key having honed their combination over the past five rounds.

For years the Kiwis have always performed better during long tournaments, getting better as they get time together under their belts while in one-off matches have seemed to lack the same cohesion.

But Kidwell’s side is growing in its consistency and will only improve if they’re able to field the same side more regularly.

“It always helped when you do have regular faces in the side,” Mannering said.

“We’ve probably had that for the last few years now. We saw that in 2015 when we had a pretty consistent team and managed to get a result against a tough Australian team.

“Everyone is pretty familiar with each other and we have some combinations there with the nine, six, seven and one all being at the same club (the Warriors) but at the end of the day it’s not going to get us the win.”

n a time when sport needs its superstars, Rowing New Zealand lost one of its brightest last week.

Eric Murray’s announcement that he was retiring from the sport, at which he, along with Hamish Bond, had been at the top of the world in for such a long period of time, came as a bit of a shock.

I guess it was expected that he and Bond would row their way off into the sunset following another dominating performance on the world stage, giving Kiwis a chance to cheer them home one last time.

But in the off season, when all is seemingly quiet, Murray has decided that enough is enough.

Murray and Bond enjoyed eight years of success. And by eight years of success we mean exactly that. No one beat them in that time as they became unparalleled in the world, without peer and above all

else they became invincible.

And while he was dominant in the boat, Murray became quite the affable character out of it.

His quick wit and humour became a trademark and no matter what he decides to do with his life next, there will always be scope for him in the world of guest speaking and even potentially somewhere within the broadcasting realm.

But do we give a guy like Murray enough credit?

Had he been an All Black it would have been some of the biggest news to break this year.

Yes, it received national coverage, but not to a huge extent.

I mean, here is a guy who has carried the silver fern on his chest for close to a decade and epitomised exactly what we, as New Zealanders, expect from our sporting heroes.

We demand excellence, but we demand those very same people have some sense of humility about them. To be someone who the modern day New Zealand sports fan can relate to.

Murray has been an incredible advocate for not only sport, but New Zealand as a whole.

Higher honours surely await him, but let’s give him the respect he deserves right now.

A champion like him at least deserves that much.

Tracks to determine Sylvester’s path The next-up options for the promising stayer Sylvester will depend on which venue offers the better going.

The lightly-tried four-year-old has consecutive wins to his credit at Tauherenikau and at Awapuni and part-owner and trainer Sylvia Kay is keeping her options open with the Road To Rock gelding.

“He’ll either be going to Palmerston North or Wellington,” she said.

“There are races at both places to suit him, he just needs the better track. I don’t want to run him on a bog track – he’s still learning and I think he will be a very good horse in the spring.”

Sylvester has twice been successful from six appearances and stablemate Dolcetto is another progressive type with two wins from half a dozen starts.

“She’s more of a sprinter and I’d like to run her at Awapuni on the 20th in a Hanley Qualifier with the final at Wellington a week later,” Kay said.

“She’s another one who has just needed a bit of time.”

Kay also has hopes of Amarone adding to the stable’s winning tally in the El Cheapo Cars Handicap at her home meeting at Otaki on Thursday.

“She doesn’t do herself any favours the way she starts, she always hesitates and gets back,” she said.

“She’s got a good finish on her when she gets a clear run. She’s no superstar, but she’s handy enough and has got no weight on her back.”

Bond, Wall to headline fundraiser

The Ashburton Rowing Club has enlisted just-retired rowing champ Hamish Bond and its own rising star Veronica Wall to headline a gala fundraiser later this month.

Both stars will speak at the event, to be held in the club’s boatshed at Lake Hood.

Organiser Sandy Lysaght said Bond’s Chertsey connections made him an obvious choice while Wall’s own star was rising on the back of four gold medals at the recent Maadi Cup and selection in the national team to attend the Junior World Rowing Championships in Lithuania in August.

Bond, who has switched to cycling and hopes to make the 2020 Olympics on two wheels, is planning a training ride in Mid Canterbury.

While he is here he will talk to Ashburton College rowers ahead of the gala night.

The secondary school rowers, including Wall, are a big part of the Ashburton club, which was founded 15 years ago after Lake Hood was built.

The club begged and borrowed gear in its infancy and some of the earlier boats are still in the shed, though strictly for sentimental reasons.

Lysaght said the club hoped to raise $25,000 from the gala, all of which would go to buying new boats and equipment, like oars, which cost around $1200 a pair.

She said new technology meant boats were constantly improving and the club tried to keep up as best it could.

It had benefited hugely from sponsorship by Midlands Seeds and Dutch carrot seed trader Ger Beemsterboer which had bought around $100,000 worth of boats for the club and its rowers over the years, she said.

Boats and other gear from the club’s shed will be moved this weekend and a generator brought in on the night to provide electricity.

Extra space will be provided in a marquee.

The night will also include several auctions, under the control of Craig Harrison, and people will be able to bid on a huge range of donated items and gifts,

The 30-year-old Cojanu, who has won 16 of his 18 professional fights but never taken a major heavyweight scalp, insisted

money wasn’t the issue.

Instead, he and Arthur were upset by the way promoters Duco Events had engaged in contract talks, allegedly demanding the insertion of additional rematch clauses after already agreeing terms.

Cojanu was also incensed by what he felt was uninformed media coverage on his fight pedigree, with Parker the red-hot favourite to win by knockout.

The 202cm fighter pointed out his sparring history with Russian ex-champion Alexander Povetkin, which he said he dominated, as evidence of his bona fides.

“You guys should go train once or twice for boxing,” Cojanu told reporters. “After, throw dirt at the fighter – like with me. I never got anything for free in my life.”

On the contract issue, Arthur said he’d never faced similar is-

sues in his 47-year career in the world of boxing management.

The stress of the issue had kept him awake for more than two days, before resolving the issue with Duco on Tuesday night.

He has sought legal advice on the matter, and alleged that both Duco and the media have already dismissed Cojanu’s chances.

“We’ve had three different contracts in front of us, that’s what really kind of irritates me – we signed the first contract before we got on the plane, we get here, (and) there’s revisions made,” Arthur said.

“They’re looking past him. I get to the point (where) you pull a gun on me, I say pull the trigger – that’s the same thing that was happening to us.”

In response, Duco dead-batted the issue yesterday afternoon, saying only that Cojanu

had signed the contract, and it was a part of boxing.

But Parker’s trainer, Kevin Barry, said Cojanu’s fighting words would have his WBO champion on red alert for blowback.

As possibly the largest fighter Parker has ever faced, the California-based Cojanu would offer a completely different skill-set to the ungainly Fury.

He would also be hungry for glory, knowing Saturday’s fight may be his first and only opportunity to fight for a world title.

“We know what this guy’s about – his experience, his capabilities,” Barry said. “This is a guy who knows Joseph very well, knows me very well, knows the style of my coaching, the style of Joseph, his strengths and weaknesses.

“We know each other – that’s why this fight is a very dangerous fight.”

Warriors development manager Tony Iro confirmed Nanai was signed to the NRL club until the end of 2019 and also revealed coach Stephen Kearney wanted to unleash him in the Auckland Nines in February but he was ruled ineligible due to age restrictions.

The Warriors are happy for him to concentrate on rugby during his final school year but there is a possibility he could turn out for the club’s Under 20s side once his First XV commitments have finished.

“He’s been with the club for a couple of years but First XV is his priority at the moment,” said Iro. “He’s a talented and smart kid and pretty well balanced. He’s quick, got good feet and a good footy sense as well, so he’s got all the attributes you need. He’ll be a good player.

“He spent a little bit of time with the NRL side just before Christmas and did some training but he’ll just stay with his First XV side this year before joining us in the preseason.”

Warriors back-rower Ryan Hoffman said Nanai made a big impression when he left star halfback Shaun Johnson clutching at air during pre-season training.

“He stood out when he gave Shaun a bit of his own back,” said Hoffman.

“We were doing a one- on-one defensive drill and he turned Shaun inside out so that certainly raised a few eyebrows.

“I don’t think he could wipe the smile off his face after that.”

Sport Savea named at No. 8 Ardie Savea gets another potentiallyimportant chance to impress at No.8 in a Hurricanes team featuring two starting changes to face the Stormers in Wellington. Regular openside flanker Savea returns to the base of the scrum on Friday following the season-ending shoulder injury suffered by Blade Thomson in the 5621 defeat of the Brumbies in Napier two weeks ago. Celtic aiming for triple Celtic will be looking to make it three from three this week in the Inter-Centre Premier netball competition, as they return to play at home after a big win away last week.

They became the first Mid Canterbury team to notch a win against a Canterbury opponent when they beat Kaiapoi 60-34 in Christchurch and know they have a tough contest this week in Lincoln University.

Coach Ange Leadley said it will be a tall order against the fast paced Lincoln girls, who

use their agility and height to their advantage. She will be hoping to build on the big defensive effort through court from last week and the commitment to turn up for the full 60 minutes to be competitive.

Southern will be hoping for similar luck on the road, as the only travelling team this week.

After a couple of tough contests first up, they’ll have their eyes firmly set on disrupting Kaiapoi – the team who were beaten by Celtic last week.

The other fixtures at the EA Networks Centre will feature

the four remaining Mid Canterbury teams.

Hampstead will have a tough ask this week against top of the table Kereru, who put in a convincing performance against Southern last week – beating them by 56 goals.

United will face Saints and will be hoping to build on their strong start from last week to sustain the pressure against the team who beat Hampstead 54-28 most recently.

The final match of the round will be a local derby between defending champions Meth-

ven and the quick and agile Ashburton College team.

Basically, according to the rules if we hadn’t seen it and wandered down and the ball was in the hole it would have been a hole-in-one.

League comeback?

Anthony Mundine has made his most audacious claim yet, saying he could become the oldest rugby league player in premiership history. Lolohea off to Tigers?
