Pretty in pink but with a distinctly art deco twist

Some of New Zealand’s best examples of quilting are on display in Ashburton over the weekend as part of a touring exhibition by Aotearoa Quilters.

Using the year’s colour theme, pink and a second theme, art deco, the classroom at Tinwald’s Annie’s Quilts has been turned into an exhibition hall that is attracting a steady stream of visitors.

Just one Ashburton quilter, Marie Williams has work in the exhibition and she and fellow members of her Ashburton quilting group will be on-hand during the three-day exhibition to talk to visitors about their craft.

The quilt samples are all small panels that can be hung as decorative items. All are for sale.

Ashburton has several quilting groups, Williams said, but with the advent of online lessons, many more people were taking up the craft as a home hobby.

Aotearoa Quilters compile an annual touring exhibition and next year’s event will be using a double theme, the hexagon and the colour silver to mark the organisation’s 25th anniversary.

It will open at the Auckland quilters’ symposium before it starts its national tour. The current exhibition has been touring since August.

Network formed to fight M. bovis

Farmers and farming families struggling to deal with the impact of mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) on their lives have been offered a community lifeline.

This will come in the form of a new group of agency representatives from rural, health and local government sectors who will be working to understand the district’s preparedness as well as what the implications are to farmers, service providers, stock and the community from the disease.

Donna Favel said that the Ashburton District was the largest singularly affected territorial authority of M. bovis.

“It has inflicted a great deal of stress and uncertainty for our people, and we each recognised that something more needed to be done to help support our farmers during this time of need,” she said.

The new group is made up of representatives from MPI, Federated Farmers, Dairy NZ, Beef & Lamb NZ, Rural Support Trust Mid Canterbury, Vet Ent, and the Ashburton Hospital.

It will form a network aimed at improving the way information is

shared to help address potential and ongoing concerns around the disease.

Its objective is to help facilitate discussions between Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and relevant organisations to ensure information is consistently shared in a timely and targeted manner with the district’s farming community, Favel said.

“I’m very pleased that leaders in our agricultural and health industries have come together to discuss what is happening out in the community, what directives MPI have for farmers and how that information is effectively shared,” she said.

“At the time of the Christchurch earthquakes, I recall that farmers had their Farmy Army and were in boots and all, trying to help others, but now it is our time to return that community support.”

The group was formed following a meeting held by MPI in the district on April 23 after MPI had announced that the M. bovis programme was increasing activity in the lead up to autumn and winter stock movements to limit the risk of the disease spreading, she said.

“It is planned that the group will help to facilitate a united front among our respective organisations as efforts to eradicate M. bovis continue.”

Rolling their way into Wheels Week

Bikes, scooters, skates, skateboards and drift trikes were the transport of choice at Tinwald School on Friday.

To kickstart Wheels Week, principal Peter Livingstone decided to stage the school’s own wheeled festival and students were encouraged to bring their transport of choice to school for a hard-out riding session in the school grounds.

In an afternoon that came very close to chaos, classrooms emptied and students donned helmets where needed, hopped in or on their wheeled vehicle of choice and hit the playing courts.

“It was a great opportunity to do something a little different – but we did double our order of sticking plasters for the day,” he said.

The school’s Wheels Week celebrations will continue next week with static displays of large trucks on Tuesday. Late morning two Lanz Bulldog tractors will chug their way onto the school grounds where students will see a demonstration of firing up the old tractors using a blowtorch.

On Friday children who have access to motorbikes or go-karts will be able to bring these to school where they will be let loose on the playing fields. A former student, Mason Bland will be bringing his mini-stock vehicle along for a demonstration.

Wheels Week has once again rolled around with yet another full calendar of events to keep everyone entertained with everything transportation related.

The iconic vintage car club swap meet kicks off the event today, with plenty of stallholders ready to show their wares to eager customers.

Just next door, the Americar Rod & Custom Club will be hosting their car show, with another bumper turnout expected.

Club president Jason Gourlay said it was an event they looked forward to every year.

“It is a really good event and this year should be good as well,” he said.

Wheels Week rolls into town

“We get a lot of out-of-towners that come along, park their cars up, wander over to the swap meet and then come back over in the afternoon for a yarn about cars.”

The car club show will not be without its own attractions, with anywhere between 60 to 100 cars expected to show up on the day.

There will also be the traditional rocker cover racing, along with a new balancing challenge.

“There will be a truck deck balancing on a pole and the task will be to drive on to it and get it balanced, so it is a good driving skills test,” he said.

The Tinwald Scouts will be manning the gates at the event and will be collecting a gold coin donation on entry, while the Golden Oldies hockey team will be running a sausage sizzle.

The show will be open from 11am to 4pm at the Americar’s clubrooms on Maronan Road.

The Plains Vintage Railway & Historical Museum will also be open on Saturday, with vintage steam train rides, a stationary engine display while the combined craft group will be displaying a variety of crafts.

There is also plenty on offer for the competitive petrolhead.

The Ashburton Car Club will be hosting a motorkhana on Sunday, while the Ashburton Speedway will be a hive of activity with the second day of the New Zealand Adult Ministocks taking to the track along with the Six Shooter titles and other supporting events from 12.30pm to 4pm.

Pedal-powered transport will also be in action tomorrow with

the Mid Canterbury Mountain Biking Club hosting a 6-hour relay ride for solo riders and teams.

Registrations will be open from 8am to 9.30am with racing from 10am to 4pm, all kicking off from the Allenton Rugby Club rooms on Melrose Road.

On Thursday and Friday next week a variety of clubs and businesses will have cars on display on the East Street Green.

Saturday and Sunday will be the big days for the Ashburton Car Club, with the famous street sprints running on both days at the Ashburton Industrial Estate, beginning at 8.30am.

On Saturday a group of local celebrities will test their basketball and wheelchair control abilities in a game of wheelchair basketball against the local team.

A large collection of a variety of vehicles will be heading for the hills on Sunday morning as part of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains’ Classic Car Run. Organisers have their fingers crossed for good weather, but still expect more than 100 cars to show up for the event.

Organiser Owen Moore said the vehicles will be meeting at the Ashburton Racecourse before departing for the Mt Somers domain along a pre-determined route.

Lunch will be served at the Mt Somers domain, before the return trip back to Ashburton would be made.

“It always is a great day and it looks like the weather is going to be fine which is great as well,” he said.

While the name of the event might imply that it would be restricted to classic vehicles, Moore said all vehicles would be welcomed to the event.

“We don’t turn anything down, in the past we have even had a 2012 Lamborghini take part,” he said.

Judges will be on hand to cast their expert eyes over the vehicles, with plenty of prizes on offer.

Despite not being the biggest car rally around, Moore said they do attract vehicles from all over Canterbury and further afield.

“We get lots from Christchurch and Timaru and even a couple from the West Coast which is a long way to come,” he said.

Registrations open for the event from 8.30am to 10am on the day at the Ashburton Racecourse with a $20 entry fee, with vehicles set to depart at 10.15am.

Bridge repairs under way

Repairs to the Maronan Road bridge over the Hinds River are finally under way more than three months after it was first damaged.

The bridge was damaged after a fertiliser truck crashed into it and went over the side, claiming the life of the driver, the second such accident since 2015.

Two more bridge blocks need to be poured and placed, while the repairs to the railing of the bridge have been completed.

“A local engineering firm was commissioned to engineer the railings off site and then install them on to the bridge using scaffolding,” Ashburton District Council group manager service delivery Neil McCann said.

“Two bridge deck blocks also need replacing. These blocks keep vehicles’ wheels from contacting the pipe railing on the side of the bridge.

“This work is expected to be completed in the coming week.”

The bridge has been placed under a temporary 70km/h speed limit while the repairs have been taking place and temporary gates were used to make the bridge safe until the railings could be replaced.

And every day there are people in Ashburton who cannot afford to buy even the most basic food they need for themselves and their families.

Members of Ashburton College’s student executive want to bring the two together as a community initiative that will create a community of winners.

Tree shading Ahead of winter, the council has sent letters to a number of rural landowners who have shelterbelts that shade roads creating ice hazards for motorists. It has been made clear to those landowners that if they do not top or remove their trees, the council will do the work and send them the bill.

They will have six to eight weeks to complete the work before the council steps in.

Library self-issue A trial of book self-issue stations in the Ashburton Library has been so successful additional stations will be added later this month.

Library manager Jill Watson said that once the process had been explained most borrowers were now confidently using the new equipment.

The Maronan Road Hinds River bridge looks to be nearly fully repaired following a fatal crash in February.

“Timeframes are an established guideline, but when emergency work such as this extraordinary event which requires materials to be manufactured off site and scaffolding

erected, repairs can go beyond the agreed timeframes,” he said.

The bridge has been the scene of two fatal crashes and McCann said the council would be considering improvements that could be undertaken to make the area safer.

“At the moment, we are looking at two factors which we think can be influenced in order to make the bridge safe. These are speed and visibility,” he said.

“We have to work around the existing location of the bridge and the environmental conditions around the immediate vicinity.

“If we can reduce the speed of approaching vehicles and improve sight visibility from both approaches to the bridges, driving conditions would improve without requiring significant costs to modify bridge structures.”

Students plan to gather waste for hungry

They say similar initiatives are running successfully in Christchurch and they’re confident the free food store concept would work in Ashburton.

The students are already leading a school-based initiative to provide morning tea for students who may have to come to school without breakfast or lunch.

They know the difference that initiative has made in students’ lives and they know there is sig-

nificant need in the wider community.

Rather than just talking, they want to make the food exchange happen, but they know they cannot do this without significant community input.

Executive members are hoping for community feedback and ideas on the food project and they want to hear from cafe owners to understand better just how much food could be available.

They know there will be significant work involved in taking the project from idea to reality, and they know that buy-in

from cafes and restaurants will be critical, but they believe the food project is long overdue.

They plan to meet with Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel to present their idea and are keeping their fingers crossed for support from her and district councillors.

While making no commitment, Favel has indicated she’s keen to meet with the students and to listen to their ideas.

Students are also keen to have a central town vegetable garden that could be cared for by volunteers with produce available to the community.

Wilding pines Hundreds of wilding conifers were removed from the area around lakes Clearwater and Camp in March by volunteers from the lakes working group, hutholders and members of the Ashburton District Council’s biodiversity group.

Visitor information The Ashburton Library is now acting as a default information centre for the town and in March staff dealt with 51 information inquiries. Numbers average between 50 and 60 each month and cover a range of issues.

Tree planting For the first time a commercial partnership has been developed around an Ashburton District Council tree planting scheme. A recent planting day at Wakanui Beach saw about 50 children plant hundreds of native plants provided

by World Traveller retail shop.

Stadium fees Fees to use court space in the EA Networks Centre stadium might be rising but that has not translated into a downturn in bookings – yet.

Users, however, are commenting about costs, said recreation services manager Richard Wood and that indicated when fees rose again in the new financial year there could be some user resistance.

New life for shade sails at preschool

There’s always a new use for something, even if it’s been languishing unused for more than 20 years.

And when the Ashburton Cancer Society team discovered three shade sails in their storage shed, health promoter Mandy Casey said she knew they needed a second chance at life. The sails had provided shade at the society’s home, the Mackenzie Centre, when it was used by the Crippled Children’s Society, but for many years they’d been packed away, Casey said.

She traced the sails’ owners and found Colleen Lindsay, who had been involved with the previous users. She was keen to see them put to good use..

Phoenix Preschool centre manager Ange Ross was delighted.The preschool board had been thinking of ways to raise money for additional shade sails and the gift meant a problem was solved without hours of hard work fundraising, she said.

Like all preschools, Ross said Phoenix was committed to a

sun smart policy, providing plenty of shaded outdoor play areas and ensuring children had sunscreen applied regularly.

“The children are amazing with sunscreen, they all know what’s needed and what to do.”

Board member Kylie Grieve had contacted the Cancer Society for advice on the best way to apply for a grant to buy and install additional sun shades.

The timing was perfect. The unwanted shades had been found and were looking for a new home.

She recruited husband Todd and friend Kurt Green who donated their time to have the sails in place when the preschool reopened after Christmas.

The Cancer Society plays a strong role in helping preschools with sun smart policies and offers advice and support where needed, Casey said.

“This work is top of our agenda with melanoma and skin cancer rates so high. If children learn good sun smart behaviours from an early age it sets them up with good practices for life,” she said.

National focus on museum

Ashburton Museum has proven it’s up there with the country’s best in terms of its education programme.

A Youth Perspective On Suffrage 125 that involved students from Ashburton Intermediate School and Ashburton Netherby School has earned the museum a berth in the finals lineup for this year’s NZ Museums Most Innovative Education programme.

Students undertook a study on suffrage and its relevance to young people today.

They worked with museum educator Max Reeves both at the museum and in the classroom to develop the project.

It became part of the Ashburton Museum’s public exhibition on suffrage that was viewed by more than 6000 people and included a petition the public could sign supporting gender pay equity.

When Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon heard about the project he was inspired to seek out the petition and to present this to parliament where it was tabled in December.

The petition is being considered by the select committee and they will report back to Parliament later in the year.

“It’s wonderful that her petition and the Suffrage 125 programme put together by the museum have been recognised,” Falloon said.

Museums Aotearoa Executive Director Phillipa Tocker said the Most Innovative Education Programme category had received a very large number of entries and that indicated museums were seeing the impor-

Mayor jumps for a cause

Awards over 12 categories will be presented at a ceremony to be held at Te Papa on Wednesday, May 22.

Ashburton’s mayor Donna Favel is about to do what few mayors do, let her life dangle by a few cords and a parachute, all in the name of raising money for the Graeme Dingle Foundation.

Favel will launch herself from the door of an aeroplane flying high above Ashburton airfield on Saturday afternoon, and that, she says is pushing herself well outside her comfort zone.

She will be one of 32 fundraising jumpers across Canterbury.

The Graeme Dingle Foundation works to inspire all school age New Zealand children to reach their full potential through programmes that help build self-esteem, promote good values and teach valuable life, education and health skills.

The foundation has partnered with Skydiving Kiwi in Ashburton and every dollar raised from this event will be spent on school-based programmes working alongside young people in our most vulnerable communities, so far over $30,000 has been raised.

The programmes are sequenced to create a positive vehicle for change for young people aged 5 to 18 years old.

Mid Ca Adventure seeker and lover of writing and photography, Lauren Korstrom, has shared with Guardian readers her opinion on the best ways to get out and enjoy the incredible walks that Mid Canterbury has to offer.

Rakaia Gorge walkway (above) This track follows the Rakaia River on a well-formed undulating path through forest and shrub. There are many spots on the path to catch a view of the turquoise waters of the Rakaia River with Mt Hutt in the background. The entire path is 10.4km but it is great to do in smaller sections. The first lookout is only 30 minutes in. Dogs are not permitted.

ne of my favourite spots to hike in New Zealand is in my own backyard in Mid Canterbury. There are many walks to choose from with different difficulties and walking times. Some take you by lakes or rivers, others to huts with mountain views. It’s true in this country many views you have to work for.

Rock scrambles and steep elevation but luckily I have found a few easier walks around Mid Canterbury that gets your heart rate up just a bit before it can settle down again. All while surrounded by the beautiful views New Zealand has to offer!

Here are some of my go-to easy walks in Mid Canterbury.

They’re great when you don’t feel like climbing a mountain and perfect as family walks.

Awa Awa Rata Reserve (above) The reserve has a few different lengths of walks within the forest of the foothills of Pudding Hill Range. There are three main tracks – the Alder, Opuke and the beginning of the harder Scotts Saddle track – which can all meet up with the ridgeline to form 30 minute to 1.5 hour circuits. There is a beautiful green space for a picnic lunch and in the summertime, the rhododendrons are stunning in their bloom!

Time: 30 mins to 1.5 hours Distance: Various Where: Turn on to Mt Hutt road off Highway 72. Follow the road to McClennans Bush/Awa Awa Rata Reserve

Lake Clearwater circuit (above) Enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Clearwater and the surrounding mountain scapes in the Hakatere Conservation Park. The path is well formed, fairly flat most of the way with wooden walkways through the wetland. The path is open the entire way and gets quite hot in the summer. Dogs are prohibited at Lake Clearwater Time: 3 hours for the full circuit Distance: 10.3km in total, can be done in small sections Where: Hakatere Conservation Park. Lake Emma (left) The track around Lake Emma is just a 4WD track but a nice easy one and leads to a cool historic hut and tack shed. Built somewhere between 1860 and 1890 it was used way back in the day by musterers. You can’t camp there, but it’s a great day walk for lunch and to watch the swans and ducks. Dogs ARE permitted at this lake, one of the few places they are allowed!

anterbury Mt Sunday (above) If you want a day experiencing what Peter Jackson came to work to for months while filming the Lord of the Rings, Mt Sunday is the place to be. It was there long before it became a movie set and although the set is gone now it’s a fun feeling playing around an area that was part of one of the entertainment industry’s biggest franchises.

Time: 40 minutes to walk to the top of the hill Distance: 1.2 km Where: Turn west onto Ashburton Gorge Road and follow the road past Lake Camp and Lake Clearwater. The road then turns into Hakatere Potts Road

Washpen Falls (above) This is certainly a favourite walk and in a spot I would have never thought had a waterfall! I believe it’s the only waterfall in Mid Canterbury you can walk to. The track is privately maintained and is on a working high country farm so there is a fee of $10 for adults and $5 for children, but it is a lovely easy walk and essentially right off the highway! It is a loop track and suitable for families.

Time: 2 hours return, option to go further up the mountain for extra time Distance: Approx 3km Where: The sign to turn off to Washpen Falls is right off Highway 72, 17km heading south from Glentunnel or 10km from the Rakaia Gorge heading north.

Lake Ida (above) Hidden between Mount Ida and Little Mount Ida is the hidden gem in the Lake Coleridge area, Lake Ida. It used to be really busy as a place to go ice skating and curling. The chalet still stands today but is no longer used. The track is about 6km long and flat most of the way taking about 3 hours.

Time: 3 hours return Distance: 6km Where: Off Harper Road in the Lake Coleridge area. A sign is posted between Lake Evelyn and Lake Selfe for the start of the track

Lake Hill (left) An easy walk at Lake Heron, you can walk up Lake Hill to catch views of the entire lake and the mountain ranges surrounding. This area is always so quiet and peaceful. A favourite of mine for a Sunday stroll. The lake is stunning and when the wind is calm you get those lake reflections! Dogs are not permitted in this area.

Time: 1.5 hours return Distance: approx 2km Where: Head west on Ashburton Gorge Road and turn right when you see the Lake Heron sign. Follow the road and the lake will come into sight. Take another right just before the lake and the off-road path will take you to the start of Lake Hill.

Sinking into stalemate AP After days of upheaval, Venezuela is sinking back into political stalemate.

In the fourth month of their standoff, President Nicolás Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaidó are unable to deliver a knock-out blow as Venezuela spirals deeper into neglect, isolation and desperation.

Abrupt shifts or behind-thescenes power plays can’t be ruled out, but there is a sense that the two camps are entrenched – too strong to be dislodged, too weak for clear-cut victory.

So what’s next?

The opposition and its chief patron, the United States, emerged with fewer options after Guaidó, leader of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, stood on Tuesday outside a military base and urged the armed forces to overthrow Maduro. The plan collapsed. Venezuela’s military commander instead pledged loyalty to Maduro, and four people died in clashes between protesters and police after the opposition’s risky bid for control.

The streets of Caracas were calm yesterday after the violence of the previous two days.

Guaidó’s new plan is to build toward a general strike, though

NZ accent ‘not sexy’ US late-night host Trevor Noah has slammed a recent poll listing the New Zealand accent as the world’s sexiest.

Earlier this week, an extensive poll conducted by Big 7 Travel put the Kiwi accent above almost 7000 languages in the world. However, the Daily Show host disagreed with the list entirely. “I think the list is all wrong,” the comedian said.

“I’m not going to lie. First of all I love New Zealand. Great country, wonderful people, but the accent is not sexy. No one is ever listening to a New Zealand accent [and] getting turned on,” Noah claimed as the audience laughed.

One Venezuela expert said the opposition and the US now have the hard task of devising a new way forward after seeing a small contingent of security forces join Guaidó outside the

“You only get to play this card once, and now that it’s been played it’s hard to see what else can be done,” said Fernando Cutz, who until April 2018 led US policy on Venezuela at the National Security Council under both Presidents Barack

At the same time, Maduro’s government is under massive strain, loathed by much of the population as it attempts to steer a decaying nation. The fact that it has not yet moved to arrest Guaidó after accusing him of trying to stage a coup suggests it is not confident enough to do so.

Cyclone Fani makes landfall on east coast AP Cyclone Fani has made landfall on India’s eastern coast as a grade 5 storm, lashing the emptied beaches with rain and wind gusting up to 205 kilometres per hour.

The India Meterological Department says the “extremely severe” cyclone in the Bay of Bengal hit the state of Odisha around 8am yesterday.

India’s National Disaster Response Force says around 1.2 million people have been evacuated from low-lying areas of Odisha and moved to nearly 4000 shelters.

Odisha Special Relief Commissioner Bishnupada Sethi says communications have been disrupted in some areas, but no deaths or injuries have been reported.

Fani is the fiercest storm since 1999, when a cyclone killed around 10,000 people.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, West is producing the series with Scooter Braun and writer Lee Sung Jin. Can’t wait to meet our little one in spring.” Hayes revealed last week she had found love with Jeroen “Jay” Blaauw, from Amsterdam, who she first met travelling four years ago and later reconnected with while climbing in the Andes in January.

Killing suspect freed AP The Vietnamese woman who was tried for the killing of the estranged half brother of North Korea’s leader was released Friday from a Malaysian prison and due to fly back to Hanoi later in the day, her lawyer and an embassy translator said.

Doan Thi Huong’s release likely closes the case, since four North Koreans named as co-conspirators in the 2017 slaying are not in custody. Malaysian officials never officially accused North Korea and made it clear they didn’t want the trial politicized.

Vietnamese embassy translator Maridam Yacfar told reporters at the prison that Doan Thi Huong looked “happy” but couldn’t give further details.

Huong’s lawyer, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, said Huong went to an immigration office and was due to fly back to Hanoi late yesterday.

Huong, 30, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of causing injury last month after prosecutors dropped the murder charge against her. She was sentenced to 40 months in prison from

The women smeared the substance on his face in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on February 13, 2017, and have said they thought they were taking part in a harmless prank for a TV show.

The four North Koreans fled Malaysia the day Kim was killed.

The High Court judge last August had found there was enough evidence to infer that Aisyah, Huong and the four North Koreans engaged in a “wellplanned conspiracy” to kill Kim and had called on the two women to present their defence.

Lawyers for the women have said that they were pawns in a political assassination with clear links to the North Korean Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, and that the prosecution failed to show the women had any intention to kill. Intent to kill is crucial to a murder charge under Malaysian law.

Hisyam said Huong was very joyful when he met her at the prison on Thursday.

“She was smiling from ear to ear. She is looking forward to return home to meet her family and friends,” he said.

In brief Chewbacca actor dies Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars films, has died aged 74, his family says. He passed away at his home in Texas on April 30 with his family by his side, a statement said. The British-American actor played giant Wookiee warrior Chewbacca in the original trilogy beginning in 1977 as well as later films until 2015. “He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in every frame,” his family said.

Execution carried out A man who killed his ex-girlfriend and another woman nearly 25 years ago was executed yesterday in Georgia. The Georgia attorney general’s office said in a statement that 52-year-old Scotty Garnell Morrow was pronounced dead following an injection of pentobarbital at the state prison in Jackson.

Farmers warned by ANZ Bank

By Jenny Ruth ANZ Bank has warned its farming customers they face higher borrowing costs almost immediately due to Reserve Bank intervention, even though wholesale interest rates have been falling sharply for more than a year.

In a letter sent to those and other business customers last month, Mark Hiddleston, ANZ’s commercial and agri division managing director, says the Reserve Bank told ANZ in February that it would have to increase the amount of capital it holds against agricultural loans by June 30.

“This increase is because we currently hold less capital for our agri loans than other banks and the RBNZ believes the quality of our loan book is not sufficiently better than the others to justify that lower amount,” Hiddleston’s letter says.

ANZ Bank is New Zealand’s largest. Its results earlier this week showed its share of the $62.5 billion agricultural lending market stood at 28.5 per cent

in February.

ANZ has been gradually reducing its agricultural exposure and its market share has dropped from 39.1 per cent in September 2010.

“As you would appreciate, the cost of capital, whilst not the only driver, is a material input cost of doing business,” Hiddleston says.

“Like most businesses, significant increases in material input costs generally lead to an increase in prices for customers,” his letter says.

In the wholesale market, the two-year swap rate has dropped about 30 per cent from 2.31 per cent in April last year to 1.62 per cent currently.

“In the immediate future, we intend to await the outcome of the May official cash rate determination from the RBNZ before we decide what movement, if any, there

will be to interest rates on our agri loans,” it says.

“A reduction in the OCR could assist in the near term in absorbing capital costs that would potentially otherwise need to be passed onto our agri customers.

We’ll let you know if this first development impacts you.”

The OCR decision and monetary policy statement will be delivered on May 8. While some economists are expecting an OCR cut, ANZ’s own chief economist, Sharon Zollner, expects the central bank to hold off until August.

Hiddleston told BusinessDesk that, unlike ANZ’s mortgage book, most of its agricultural borrowers opt for floating rates. If the OCR is cut, ANZ would be able to hold the rate it charges farmers on floating rates, rather than following the OCR down, and recover its costs that way. The bank’s funding costs would also go down.

ANZ had been debating internally about how to inform its customers about the situation. “I can’t sit in front of my team and my customers and not raise the awareness,” Hiddleston says.

On top of that, both the RBNZ and the Financial Markets

Authority, which conducted an inquiry into the banks last year, have been urging the banks to be more transparent with their customers, he says.

While the regulators may be urging banks to be more transparent, it is notable that the Reserve Bank has made no public mention of its order to ANZ to increase the capital backing of its agricultural lending.

In May last year, the Reserve Bank revealed the results of a benchmarking exercise it set the four major banks, ANZ, ASB Bank, Bank of New Zealand and Westpac, asking them to report on how much capital they would need to support a hypothetical portfolio of loans to 20 dairy farms.

Each of these banks uses its own internal models for calculating its risk-weighted capital requirement to meet regulatory minimums.

The other smaller banks in New Zealand – the big four account for about 88 per cent of New Zealand’s banking system – are forced to use standardised models which means they have to hold more capital proportionately and are therefore competitively

disadvantaged.

While the central bank didn’t name which bank produced which outcome in the dairy portfolio test, it found an extraordinary 40 percentage-point difference between the highest and lowest average risk-weights among the big four.

“The provisions results show significant variation in model outcomes, even for the same level of underlying risk,” the Reserve Bank said at the time.

It was this huge disparity that was one of the factors that fuelled the higher capital proposals the central bank is currently consulting on – the consultation period is set to close on May 17.

The proposals include a near doubling of the minimum tier 1 capital, or equity, each of the big four banks has to hold from 8.5 per cent to 16 per cent. The benefit they get from using their internal models will also be reduced to 90 per cent of the results the standardised models produce.

Currently, banks on average have about 12 per cent of risk-weighted tier 1 capital.

Keep an eye on Sydney property market

By Liam Dann The prospect of a new Prime Minister after this month’s Federal election should hardly rattle Australian markets – they’ve seen more than their fair share in the past decade.

But the election on May 18 does put the spotlight on the Australian economy which retains considerable influence over New Zealand’s fortunes despite being relatively flat in the past year.

Our KiwiSaver funds are heavily invested in Australian stocks and our property market has historically tended to follow the direction set in Sydney.

The ASX-200 share index last week broke through into record territory for the first time since the global financial crisis, Pie Funds chief executive Mike Taylor told Market Watch.

The slump in property prices – in particular in Sydney and Mel-

bourne which are both off around 15 per cent – was also starting to show signs of easing, Taylor said.

“There is starting to be evidence that those markets are stabilising, auction clearance rates are lifting in both centres.”

One of the big drivers of the slump in Sydney and Melbourne had been an over supply of the apartment market.

“There appears to be less cranes about,” Taylor said. “The on-theground-feel is that all the apartments have been built and there are no new major projects kicking off.”

The Reserve Bank of Australia is expected to cut Australia’s official cash rate by 0.25 basis points next week in response to the softer property market and wider economic slow down.

That would likely further boost the ASX-200, Taylor said.

Beyond that, future cuts would probably depend on the unemploy-

ment rate, he said.

Longer term the only thing that really mattered for Australia was China, Taylor said.

As a market it represented 30 per cent of Australia’s export earnings.

There were positive signs on that front with commodity prices having improved and Government stimulus starting to arrest the slowdown of GDP growth in China.

For most local investors it was important to keep an eye on the Australian economy, Taylor said.

With only 180 or so local companies on the NZX most people with money invested in markets had stake in Australia and the ASX, he said.

“I think if the property market can stabilise, the RBA puts one rate cut through, with the China stimulus and a trade deal between China and the US looking better, I think Australia can kick on in the second half of the year.”

A salute to our volunteer firefighters

T

hey’re the men and women who run towards a fire while others run from it.

The frontline services when it comes to keeping things safe around the world, the team in the bright red truck whose presence can be heard and felt before it’s even seen.

The volunteer firefighter. The legends.

Today is officially International Volunteer Firefighter Day – a day introduced to acknowledge the work done across the globe by firemen and women.

The day was instituted after a proposal was emailed out across the world on January 4, 1999 due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a bush

fire in Australia and it’s been a permanent fixture since.

In an area like ours where we aren’t populated by huge numbers of paid firefighters, the role of the volunteer is immense. We consistently ask them to drop what they are doing whether it be work, sleep or family life and race away to help someone in need.

It’s a wonderful service and one we should appreciate every day

as much as we can and not just on the official day on which they are formally recognised.

What they are forced to see and deal with when attending callouts must take a huge amount of compassion and mental strength.

Just the thought processes at a scene where there has been a car accident and someone has tragically died would be enough to make most people run away, but these remarkable people are the first to get right in the middle of it and see what they can do to help.

While a notable job to hold down, it’s full of challenges and if you live anywhere near a fire station that operates an alarm in this district you know full well

just how often those firefighters are called to duty and how harrowing that alarm can sound, especially in the dead of the night.

Last year alone our district had an average of more than two callouts a day – some to false alarms or an alarm activation through to car accidents and house fires.

No matter the situation, they do what they are trained to do and that’s to get into their vehicles, get to the station and get on the truck and out to the job – every time with a level of professionalism that could well be shared among other parts of the community.

But the battle to keep numbers up and volunteers com-

ing through the door is tough – there’s always the need for more men, or women, on the ground. Most kids, especially boys, tend to grow up wanting to be a firefighter, but only a small percentage of them actually end up going through with it. So, the more we can encourage and point in that direction ultimately the safer this district is going to be in the future.

So today, we salute our volunteer firefighters and urge anyone thinking about joining a brigade to get down to their nearest station and register their interest.

Without these incredibly kind and selfless people life would be very different.

And not for the positive.

What an image portrays W

e all know the saying – a picture paints a thousand words – and there is an image that has kept crossing my mind over the past few weeks.

It says more than a thousand words.

If you were wanting people to believe in you and the words you speak, would you choose an image that reinforces your beliefs and what you stand for?

Think of a soldier and how they are presented. The uniform is neat, functional, the same as all the other soldiers, disciplined, and representative of what that soldier believes in – it probably carries the country’s flag.

Think of a politician. The clothing is formal, well presented, but not black tie level. It probably reflects the majority of the people the politician represents.

Think of a mechanic. Most likely you think of overalls with the mechanic’s name and company embroidered on the chest.

What’s more important is, if you took your car into Robbie’s Undercar Specialists and Willie came out to change your oil, dressed like a politician – would you believe him?

Or, if you popped over and saw the awesome team at The Tool Shed and Nicky came out to the front in a netball uniform, would you believe she knew how to help

you when it came to selecting the right drill bits for the job?

So, you get my point, images and pictures paint a thousand words.

I believe that we trust what we see and if someone spoke to us not appearing as how they say they are; we don’t believe them.

So, back to that image that has been playing on my mind.

It’s an image of a self-appointed leader, who profits greatly from those who come from less fortunate circumstances. It is someone who reaches a fever pitch in their absolute belief in what they are saying.

This person implores people to believe in him, to the point he has given himself new titles to boost his profile.

He is borderline extreme in his views of those who believe different to him.

What unsettles me the most is he stands for anti-violence, he says he has the answer to the shocking domestic abuse statistics New Zealand has.

So, if you were going to set such a stake in the ground

on your stance on domestic violence, why would you dress like the very image most people think of when we say the word violence.

If you haven’t cottoned on yet, I’m talking about Brian Tamaki.

He dresses like the very image of violence.

He has purposely chosen to mimic what a gang member wears. He even rides a typical biker gang motorbike, without a helmet.

Here is a man who says he can reduce domestic violence through his Man Up programmes, so why does he dress like a thug? I don’t believe him and I base that on the way he dresses.

Do you think the countless number of women who have suffered at the hands of gang members believe him? What is one the most enduring images they would have when they think of abuse?

Why would you choose the imagery of gang life to promote yourself as the saviour of the abused?

I have tried to take an objective approach to the argument he presents for his ministry in our prisons, or his request for government funding of his schools, but I don’t believe him because he knows exactly what he is doing and how he presents himself.

He stands first for himself

and is in love with the image he portrays.

I have come across some extraordinarily altruistic people who have given over their time, money and energy to help others before themselves. Their humility and down to earth appearance matches the approach they take to help others and not seek the limelight.

I am not surprised we saw earlier this week such a strong response from senior politicians to Brian Tamaki. His words, coupled with his image, simply reek of extreme views and action.

Why would you believe him?

Now I’m not asking him to dress like a seventies minister with a receding comb-over hairline and sandals with socks, but his lack of sensitivity to the victims of violence demonstrates his skewered thinking.

If you think I’m judgemental and biased, basing all of this on just how he looks, you’re right.

It’s Brian who chooses to present this way, and he is an offensive image, not the answer, to those who are battered and broken.

Big margins on opening night No team

unbeaten

Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier season got under way on Thursday night with some big winning margins a feature of the opening round.

But, no-one was getting too far ahead of themselves.

It was the first night and for all teams there were some cobwebs to blow out, and those who perhaps didn’t perform as well as they’d hoped in round one, would no doubt come back stronger for it come round two.

One of those sides was Celtic B. The newest side in Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier one grade after winning promotion to the top grade for the third and final round in 2018, Celtic B took on Hampstead A at the EA Networks Centre and lost 35-18.

Hampstead A got off to the stronger start of the two and moved the ball through the court well to get away to a 17-8 lead by half-time, and little changed in the second half.

But, Celtic B coaches Di Ness and Marie Kennedy said it wasn’t all bad for their young side, which featured just a couple of players returning from 2018.

“There’s lots to work on, but lots of positives with it as well,” Ness said.

“There were some areas that worked very well, but we just couldn’t finish,” Kennedy said.

It was a similar story on the court next door, with College A sounding a strong warning to their opposition for the coming weeks, with a 41-24 win over Mt Somers.

College A were unbeaten in the pre-season inter-centre tournament, which involved teams from around Canterbury, and they picked up where they left

Like Celtic B, Mt Somers only mustered eight goals in the first half, with College A leading 23-8 at the break, and Mt Somers were always going to have a massive mountain to climb to get back into the match.

They weren’t the only side facing an uphill climb on opening night.

Methven A drew Celtic A in the first round, setting up a replay of the 2018 premier one final, and just as in that game – and every other game they played in last season – Celtic A came out on top.

Celtic A won 36-25, but they didn’t have it all their own way, only holding a slender 17-15

lead at half-time against a determined Methven A attack.

Celtic A coach Angela Leadley said shooter Sala Bueta controlled the goal circle for her side, while Shannon Stockdale made her presence felt in the midcourt.

“In the third quarter we put foot to pedal really, everything just came together for the girls,” Leadley said.

“I have to say everyone was really excited to start and get the competition under way, so in the first quarter we had to sort out a few cobwebs.”

The opening round of premier two produced the highest scoring affair of the night with United A signalling their intentions for the season with a resounding

56-10 victory over Hampstead B. United A were the side that lost that promotion/relegation match against Celtic B at the end of the second round last season, and they’re determined to make it back into the top grade.

They’re not the only ones, though. Southern A were the side automatically relegated to premier two after the opening round last season, with Mt Somers moving up from premier two to take their spot, and they’re determined to make the move back up, too.

Southern A started their 2019 campaign with a 39-27 win over a spirited Ashburton College B side, while the night’s other premier two game saw Methven B down Celtic C 33-16.

Embiid comes to light for the Philly 76ers AP Joel Embiid refused to get tripped up back home in the postseason, scoring 33 points and playing to the “MVP!” chants to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 116-95 victory over Toronto Raptors yesterday.

Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semi-final series.

Embiid also had 10 rebounds, shaking off a pair of passive games and became the driving force on offense the Sixers needed as they chase their first NBA championship since 1983.

He made the game his own in the third quarter and helped the Sixers put away a Raptors team badly overmatched outside of Kawhi Leonard’s one-man gang performance.

Embiid struck a chord when he buried a 3 in the third that stretched Philadelphia’s lead to 12.

That was start of a string of plays that got Toronto’s attention.

Embiid chased a loose ball and was tripped when Pascal Siakam intentionally stuck out his right leg and sent Philly’s All-Star tumbling to the court.

The crowd went wild and Siakam was hit with a flagrant foul.

Embiid made both free throws as fans – including some of Philadelphia’s biggest sports stars – serenaded him with chants of “MVP! MVP!” Jimmy Butler, the Game 2 star, dunked off his own steal and the Sixers had quickly put the game out of reach.

Butler had 22 points.

Basketball Mid Canterbury’s A grade men’s competition has blown wide open, with no teams now unbeaten.

On Wednesday night at the Oxford Street stadium, Star Team Donkey were the only side yet to be beaten, but they lost that tag against Newlands Gannets.

Gannets took hold of the game early with a fast break and set piece proving effective, although the key was their defensive intensity, with the towering figure of Jason Greig significant and any defensive boards generally secured.

Gannets’ plan was simple – shut down Star’s fast break and pay particular attention to their main offensive threats – and it worked.

By halftime Gannets led 47-29.

Star employed a man-to-man defence but were unable to close the gap and there was to be no miracle comeback, Gannets running out comfortable winners 9064.

Greig top-scored with 23 points, followed by Nick Fechney with 19 (four 3-pointers), Jase O’Connor with 16 (two 3-pointers) and Matt Jopson with 14 (two 3-pointers), while Liam O’Connor had a top defensive game, picking up several intercepts and generally making a nuisance of himself.

For Star, Tim Kuipers toiled away all game, top scoring with 19 points, while Marvin Agacer added 17.

Checkers Team Donkey MSA took on Nomads in the night’s second game and it was a fast and intense one, with neither side giving anything away.

Nomads held a slender 15-14 lead into the second quarter, but six 3-pointers by Checkers changed that.

Leading 35–28 at the halfway point, Checkers kept up the tempo in the third quarter and extended their lead to 56–41.

Nomads did not go away and fought hard all the way in the fourth but just couldn’t cut into the lead, with Checkers comfortable in their 75-61 win in the end.

For Checkers Pip Johnston was again outstanding with 32 points (five 3-pointers), while Brad van der Eik had his best game of the season adding 17 points.

Nomads were led by Sam Moore with 16 points, with Tony Gilbert adding 11 and Mikal Johnson 10.

All up, Checkers hit a combined total of 13 3-pointers against Nomads’ two.

Barbarians eye up the top spot

An indiscretion from Marist Saints last weekend means that if the Ashburton Barbarians can beat them today, they’ll move to the top of the Canterbury Rugby League division one competition ladder.

Marist Saints have been the team to beat this season, downing the defending champion Burnham Chevaliers a fortnight ago, but last weekend that came crashing down when they were forced to forfeit against the Halswell Hornets.

On the field, Marist ran away with the game against a Halswell side playing division one rugby league for the first time in many years, but a mistake off the field saw the points taken off them.

Canterbury Rugby League CEO Duane Fyfe confirmed Marist had been found to have fielded an ineligible player, meaning they had to forfeit the game and it instead went down as a 20-0 win to Halswell.

That meant that heading into today’s match between the Ashburton Barbarians and Marist in Ashburton, the two teams were tied at the top of the table.

As if the Barbarians didn’t already have enough incentive to topple the only ‘unbeaten’ team after four rounds, they also had a

chance to finish round one as the top dogs.

Barbarians coach Steve Gamble said his side was ready, with some key players in fine form.

“Xavier Bartlett has been getting better and better every week, he’s just such a talented player so it’s good to have him on our side,” Gamble said.

New signing Seamus Smyth was also making an impact off the back of the scrum, while Arron Heke was making centre his own, after being forced to move there from the second row due to a centre shortage.

After starting their season with a loss to Burnham, the Barbarians have been unstoppable, and they’d love to finish the first of this season’s three rounds off today with a win over Marist.

Among the interested onlookers sideline, would be the boss of rugby league in Canterbury, Fyfe.

He said he was coming to Ashburton to watch the game today, but not because of last weekend’s incident involving Marist.

He was simply getting out and about, heading to the Rolleston Warriors club day in the morning and carrying on to Ashburton for the division one match.

The Ashburton Barbarians and Marist Albion match will kick off today at 2pm, at Robilliard Park.

The Ashburton Barbarians will be looking to take charge against Marist Saints today.

Nikorima confirms Warrior move NZME Kodi Nikorima is a New Zealand Warrior.

After a week of speculation and rumours surrounding the Kiwis halfback, the Warriors have confirmed the signing of the 25-year-old through to the end of the 2021 season.

He will arrive in New Zealand in the coming days after being released from his contract with the Brisbane Broncos, and will be in line to make his Warriors debut against the Dragons next Saturday.

Ironically the match will be played in Brisbane as part of the NRL’s Magic round.

“We couldn’t be more excited to secure a player of Kodi’s calibre, especially at this stage of the season,” Warriors chief executive Cameron George said in a statement on the team’s website.

“We’ve been patient in watching the

player market for some time. Peter O’Sullivan and our recruitment team have done a terrific job in securing Kodi, who will certainly add value to our club.”

Nikorima was stood down from the Broncos match against the Rabbitohs on Thursday night, and given this week to consider his future.

Nikorima will add considerable depth to the Warriors all-important spine, as he has played first grade at halfback, hooker and fullback.

But he has been targeted to add strength and experience to the halves, and that will be his primary position, despite his versatility.

Nikorima has played 86 NRL games since making his debut in 2015.

He has also played 13 tests for the Kiwis, and was the lead playmaker on last year’s tour of England.

Div one competition leaders await MC United

Mid Canterbury United’s division one football team has a chance to make a real statement at the Ashburton Domain today.

They’ve had a pretty good start to their first season as a Mainland Football division one team, after gaining promotion by taking out division two in 2018, with three wins and a draw to their name putting them third on the points table after four rounds.

Today, though, their biggest challenge of the season awaits them at the Ashburton Domain in the form of the Halswell United 1964s – the team at the top of the table with four wins to their name, and only two goals scored against them so far this season.

But, Mid Canterbury’s record isn’t all that different.

They’ve scored 18 goals (one less than Halswell) and had three scored against them, but what puts them in third is that draw.

Mid Canterbury United and the Halswell United 1964s will kick off at the Ashburton Domain at 2.30pm, while Mid Canterbury United’s division six team is on the road to Universities AFC Burgundy Beavers in Christchurch.

Mid Canterbury United are top of the division six leaderboard with four wins from four outings, while Methven FC’s division six team is fifth in the 14-team competition.

is also away today, to Oxford FC. Methven FC’s main team, in division three, will finally get to play in front of their home fans, with the Universities Berocca Fowards heading to town this afternoon.

That game will kick off at 2.30pm at the Methven Domain.

Meanwhile, the district’s youngest footballers will be lacing up their boots this morning too, with Mid Canterbury Football’s junior competitions set to get under way today.

Wakanui return It hasn’t been an ideal start to the season for Mid Canterbury’s senior hockey teams.

Mid Canterbury’s sole senior men’s side in the Mid/South Canterbury hockey competition – Wakanui – picked up a win in round one before facing two weeks of no hockey due to school holidays followed by a bye.

Today, they’ll finally get back into it, with a trip to Timaru in front of them to take on Tainui.

Despite having only played one game, where three teams have played two, Wakanui still sits second on the points table after two rounds, thanks to their 4-1 win over Northern Hearts in round one.

Temuka top the table but are one from two from their two games so far, while third placed Cambridge is the other team to have only played one game – they beat Tainui 5-2 last weekend.

Tainui is Wakanui’s opposition in Timaru at 1.40pm today, and they are bottom of the table and the only team without a win after two rounds.

Mid Canterbury’s sole women’s division one team in the Mid/ South competition, Hampstead, are also top of the table despite losing to Timaru Girls’ High School last weekend.

They won’t move this weekend though, as they’ve got the bye in round three.

Crunch time as finals loom

If Rakaia don’t beat Ohoka today, they may be kissing their chances of making the combined country rugby competition’s play-offs goodbye.

With just two rounds to go in the Luisetti Seeds Cup competition, that’s the reality that more than one team is facing today.

It’s crunch time.

Teams have just two more games left to put their cases forward for being one of the top two teams in each of the three pools to automatically make the playoffs, or if that fails, one of the two next best teams on a combined points table which will be given a wildcard ticket to the finals.

Rakaia head into the penultimate round in third spot in pool B. Glenmark-Cheviot top the table with 23 points, followed by Springston on 22, with Rakaia on 17 and Southbridge on 15.

Glenmark-Cheviot and Springston play each other today, while Southbridge take on Rolleston in a game they should win, so if Rakaia win too it will set up an exciting final round in pool B. Rakaia play Southbridge in the last round, so depending on today’s results, it could be a case of whoever wins that game makes the top section finals, and whoever loses, doesn’t.

But, Rakaia coach Terry Murray knows it’s still a case of one step at a time.

“My biggest fear is the boys taking Ohoka lightly and getting our arses kicked,” Murray said. “But I don’t think they will do that, I think they will be pretty focused.

“They have a pretty good understanding of what’s on the line.”

Rakaia – who lost last year’s Luisetti Seeds Cup final to Waihora – have been building steadily every week and, going on form, should come home from Ohoka with their fourth win of the season to their names.

“We just need to control our destiny and what we do, and let the rest sort itself out,” Murray said.

Seta Koroitamana has been a powerhouse for Rakaia again this season.

Murray said Rakaia has no excuses.

They have a fully fit squad to pick from which includes their captain from last year, Jackson Donlan, who returned last weekend having missed the start of the season as he was overseas.

Mid Canterbury’s other team in pool B, Methven, are well back on the points table with just 10 points and two wins to their names, but pipped Springston at the post last week in one of the upsets of the competition so far.

Today they’re off to Rangiora to play Saracens in a crossover match between pools B and C. Methven coach Jason Kjestrup said Methven have been building all season, and things are finally starting to click, but it has likely come too late for them to be a contender for the combined title, so they’re looking to keep building ahead of the local competi-

tion – the Watters Cup. The defending Watters Cup champions are Mid Canterbury’s sole pool C side – Celtic – and they’re also on the road today.

They’re heading to Oxford where a win will ensure they’re still a chance of making the playoffs, although they’re missing a few key players as their bad run of injuries this season continues.

They will have the services of Leauma Tu-uga today though, as he continues his comeback from injury, while Jacob Sutton also returned to the fold last week after two years abroad.

Pool A is the one where Mid Canterbury’s best play-offs chance has been found in recent weeks, with Southern dominating the pool in the early stages.

But they lost their unbeaten status at Darfield last weekend and are now not taking anything for granted.

Southern are home to Hornby today, one of just three teams in the 22-team competition yet to record a win, and they know it’s a must-win match, with a sticky Kaiapoi side their last round opposition.

Despite last weekend’s loss, Southern is still joint top of the table in pool A with Darfield, thanks to five bonus points.

Southern coach Andrew Carr said Southern are targeting 10 points from their final two games which will put their position in the top eight beyond doubt.

“If you’d asked me at the start of the season if I’d be happy with four wins and one loss, I’d have said ‘yes’,” Carr said.

And he is happy, although he knows the job is far from done.

gle was illustrated on the scoreboard, so they’ll be happy to be home again today.

But, they’re likely to face a huge battle with defending champions Waihora their opposition this week.

Waihora have been beaten twice already this season though, and a third loss could put them in a position where they might not even make the play-offs and have a chance to defend their title.

If Hampstead was the team to do that, their coach Shaun Bovey would be delighted.

“You don’t go into a game to lose, but you certainly know you’re going to be in for a real battle,” Bovey said.

He said Hampstead’s focus is on getting its defence back on track, after a poor showing in their loss to Kaiapoi last weekend.

Hampstead have won just the one match so far this season.

Surprising new deals close for top All Blacks

By Patrick McKendry Brodie Retallick is close to agreeing a new contract with New Zealand Rugby which could allow him to miss not only all of next year’s Super Rugby season, but all international rugby.

The NZ Herald also understands that another key All Black, first-five Beauden Barrett, is also close to signing a new deal.

But, unlike lock Retallick, who is likely to play for a Japanese Top League club in 2020 and into early 2021 which will represent an extended stint away from New Zealand, Barrett will probably agree on a non-playing sabbatical at a

yet-to-be-confirmed date, a break made popular by former All Black Richie McCaw and, more recently, Ben Smith.

Retallick’s expected absence next year explains why New Zealand Rugby so readily agreed to allow Sam Whitelock, the next All Blacks skipper-in-waiting, to remain available for the national team on his return from his shorter-term contract with Panasonic.

Whitelock won’t play for the Crusaders in 2020 but it will be business as usual for him as far as the All Blacks are concerned once the international season kicks off.

And while Steve Hansen’s successor might be comfortable with-

out one world-leading lock in Retallick, to have both unavailable would be far more challenging.

If Retallick isn’t available it will allow Crusaders and Blues locks Scott Barrett and Patrick Tuipulotu, respectively, to stake claims, with Tom Franklin also likely to be in the mix if his recent performances for the Highlanders are anything to go by.

Retallick, a 27-year-old who has played 75 tests, is a crucial part of the All Black pack but was badly affected by injuries last year and will be targeting two seasons in Japan – next year the Top League runs from January to May and starts again in October until February – as a lucra-

tive way of extending his career.

The Japanese club game is far less physical than Super Rugby and Retallick may feel, should he emulate Whitelock and sign a fouryear deal as expected, that he has a good three seasons in him in New Zealand once he returns.

Former All Blacks loose forward Jerome Kaino, who spent two years in Japan representing Toyota Verblitz immediately after the 2011 World Cup, said the time away from the grind of Super Rugby helped him enormously.

Kaino excelled on his return to the Blues and All Blacks in 2014 and is still playing for Toulouse at the age of 36.

Schoolboy supremacy battles begin

They’re a relatively new team and they don’t have any big stars, but the players that make up the Mid Canterbury Combined 1st XV are hoping to rattle a few cages this season.

Today, they head into battle in the first round of the Crusaders rugby region’s schoolboy rugby competition – the UC Championship – well aware that they’re in for just that, a battle.

Marlborough Boys’ College will be the Mid Canterbury side’s opposition at the Ashburton College field today, and the home side know starting the competition with a win won’t be easy.

While the Ashburton College and Mount Huttt College combined side has retained the services of just seven players from the 2018 season where Mid Canterbury Combined didn’t win a game, they understand the traditionally strong Marlborough Boys’ outfit have only lost about three players from last season.

Mid Canterbury Combined is being coached by a partnership this season, of Brent Middleton, Warren Donald and Andrew Morgan, and while they know it’s probably going to be a tough season ahead, they’re excited by the potential of their young side.

Middleton said the players are excited, too.

“They (Marlborough Boys) will be tough but for the kids to get out there and go through the whole haka, and preparation of how they do things in the UC Championship, it’s exciting really,” Middleton said.

A dislocated shoulder and a head knock pre-season means Mid Canterbury Combined’s backline is light on numbers and experience, but they’ve got good numbers in the forwards.

Brynmor Workman will cap-

tain the side from halfback in what is his third season in the team.

“Our forwards will be small compared to the opposition, and as a team we haven’t got any superstars, so to go any good they are going to have to play as a team and trust each other,” Middleton said.

Their depth might not be huge, but they’ve got plenty of ability – as they showed in their pre-season win over Waitaki Boys’ High School.

Middleton said the side will be relying heavily on the experience of their seven returning players to lead the way.

“They are only going to get

better as the season goes, obviously, and the first game will let us know where we are at,” Middleton said.

Mid Canterbury Combined will begin their UC Championship campaign against Marlborough Boys’ today at the Ashburton College field, with kick-off at midday.

Blyde, Brazier a huge boost for the Black Ferns Sevens Kelly Brazier and Michaela Blyde return from injury to bolster the Black Ferns Sevens team travelling to Canada for the HSBC Langford Sevens.

After finishing fifth at the Kitakyushu Sevens last month,

the Black Ferns Sevens are looking to improve when they take the field next weekend.

“It was not the result we were after, the biggest frustration was the inconsistency in our performances,” said assistant coach Cory

Sweeney who will again guide the team.

“We have a good mix of experienced and new players so the key is understanding individual roles and developing combinations. We didn’t adapt to the difference as

well as we needed to but the team has been working really well and using the experience as a learning.”

The return of the experienced Kelly Brazier and 2018 World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year

Michaela Blyde strengthen the team, while Stacey Waaka is outwith a wrist injury.

The Black Ferns Sevens currently lead the World Series standings, six points ahead of hosts, Canada with two tournaments remaining.
