The Ashburton teenagers caught up in Nepal’s devastating earthquake are home safely, as the death toll from the quake hit 7000. Sophie Schrader, Frances Redmond and Kate Wild were on a three-week expedition with a group from St Margaret’s College in Nepal when the 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck.
Miss Redmond said she was shopping when it struck. “We all ran out into the street and all the Nepalese people were running out of their buildings,” she said. “You felt so vulnerable because there was nothing you could do and it wasn’t like the Christchurch one where it was all over and done with within a short time, it just kept going,” she said.
The school group of 26 pupils and four teachers had been split into two groups, one trekking near the city of Pokhara, about 80km east of the quake’s epicentre and the other group working alongside villagers to help build a school, 40km from Kathmandu. Miss Redmond said after making her way back to the hotel to reunite with the group, it was decided that everyone would
move out of the multi-storey building to a safer location. The group eventually made its way to the other end of Pokhara where they camped in small shacks. “We had food, water, wifi, live music, it was quite nice,” Miss Redmond said. The school group flew out on Wednesday following the quake, but Miss Redmond said it was a mission to get from Pokhara to
Kathmandu to catch their first flight. They ended up travelling by road, a six-hour journey that ended up taking nearly nine hours due to traffic congestion. They then caught a flight out of Kathmandu, flying to China before catching a connecting flight to Auckland and finally, Christchurch on Friday. She spent the weekend with her family and will return to school tomorrow.
