CDHB says ‘no’ to Compass contract

The Canterbury DHB announced yesterday it would not be renewing its contract with food suppliers, Compass Group, which will directly impact Ashburton Hospital.

All food services will be managed in-house from July 1, this year.

About 40 staff at Ashburton Hospital, including orderlies and cleaners, will be offered employment with Canterbury DHB from July 1.

Compass Group also provides services for Tuarangi Home.

The DHB said yesterday they have “absolutely” no plans to cut the number of food services staff.

Chief executive David Meates said in September last year Canterbury DHB advised Health Partnerships Limited (NZHPL) that it would not be signing up to the national food service contract.

“Our intention is that all current food services staff are retained by Canterbury DHB and we don’t expect the public to notice any difference in the food services provided in our hospitals,” he said.

“We will maintain our current high quality and high standards of food production and service across all our hospitals.

“All current services – cafes for the staff and public, meal pro-

vision across our hospitals and meals on wheels will be maintained.”

Meates said they intend to offer employment to all 300 workers and their managers currently employed by Compass Group.

“It’s our intention that they will be employed by Canterbury DHB from 1 July on the same terms and conditions as their current contracts, and they will enjoy additional benefits as Canterbury DHB employees,” he said.

“I would like to acknowledge the 13 years’ service and valued relationship we’ve had with Compass who took over the contract back in 2004. Up until that point the services had been provided by a mix of in-house, outsourced and joint management contracts; prior to which all food services were in-house.

“Between now and 1 July there’s a lot of behind the scenes details to work through and we will continue to work co-operatively with Compass/Medirest, their staff, and union to ensure a smooth transition for all.”

Canterbury DHB continues to support the New Zealand Health Partnerships programme to develop national nutritional guidelines for all hospitals and continue to support the application of Key Performance Indicators/benchmarks to all DHB food service operations nationally.

Toy library looking for new home

The Ashburton Toy Library is full to capacity and needs help from the community to find a new home.

Since 1994 they have been based at the Methodist Church Hall in Baring Square, but after 22 years of accumulating equipment, they have outgrown the current facilities.

With their three-year lease due to expire later in the year, they see it as the perfect opportunity to relocate.

Ashburton Toy Library vicepresident Jane Fowles said, due to space, volunteers are required to pack away hundreds of bulky items into a smaller room

at the end of each session.

“When you load things on top of each other they wear down quicker,” she said.

“We want somewhere we can leave things set up. We can pack up at times, but not after every session.”

Representatives are also due to attend a toy library training event where they hope to purchase more toys, but are worried where they will fit the excess.

They currently have more than 900 toys in the library, which services about 350 children in the community, and is run through an annual membership.

“We really love it here, but it’s time for us to relocate,” Fowles said.

“In July, the lease expires, so it makes perfect sense to sort it out now.

“There’s no pressure or sense of urgency, it’s about finding the right space.”

They have issued a “dream wish list” of what will tick the boxes in the new venue.

This includes, a large space to display toys, space for children to safely play, good access, parking, toilet facilities, minimal rent and at a central location.

President Anthea Moore said; “ideally, the new space will see us through the next 30 years”.

Social media accounts under Labour scrutiny

Do you have a hidden talent for show-stopping Elvis impersonations?

The Ashburton County Lions want to hear from you!

Project director Marie McAnulty is organising the town’s firstever Stars in Their Eyes event and encourages people interested to enter and showcase their theatrical prowess.

It follows the same concept of the British television talent show, made famous in the 1990s, in which contestants impersonate their favourite musical icon, right down to the costume, make-up, mannerisms and style.

While initial details of the local competition are still to be decided, McAnulty said it will be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Auditions will be held on October 13 and the finals will be held the following day on October 14.

“We want people to start thinking about their entries,” McAnulty said.

“The County Lions are all behind it.”

She had previously helped organise a similar event in the Wairarapa, which had always been a hit.

“They just do singing, but we are opening it up to bands and kids,” she said.

The event will be a fundraiser for the Ashburton Youth Institute.

Stars in Their Eyes Ashburton will be open to everyone from children to older people; dancers and bands, the only prerequisite is that participants are impersonating a celebrity or musical icon.

“Get thinking about it now and we will have entry forms in the near future,” McAnulty said.

Labour Party candidates have been urged to clean up their social media profiles by removing potentially embarrassing pictures or comments about the party.

The directive by Labour’s general secretary Andrew Kirton was accidentally sent by text message to a Newstalk ZB reporter.

It asks Labour candidates to check for any old social media posts which could “embarrass you or the Party” – even if they were taken before the person joined Labour.

Warning that Labour’s opponents were searching through candidates’ pages, Kirton said: “Your social media accounts should present you as a professional and in touch person.

“Images of you drinking, making inappropriate gestures etc etc should be deleted.”

It also says any criticisms of Labour policy, current or former leaders “will come back to haunt you and us”.

Kirton has not responded to a request for comment.

Fracas results in youth arrests

Ashburton police will continue to crack down on the group of hardcore young offenders involved in an assault at Ashburton’s McDonald’s restaurant on Thursday.

The assault, which happened around 4.30pm, was recorded and the video posted on the Ashburton Notice Board website. It has since been viewed thousands of times.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said the group who started the fracas had been involved in an altercation outside the police station on Havelock Street just two hours earlier.

About nine male and female offenders, all aged 14 to 16, form the basis of the group, which has been responsible for a range of anti-social behaviour in the community during the past 12 months.

The youngsters have recently begun wearing colours associated with outlaw gangs.

“They have started showing allegiance by wearing red shirts and hats with red hankies hanging out of their pockets,” Banfield said.

Following Thursday’s incident three youths were arrested and charged with offences related to disorderly behaviour and assault. Another has been referred

to police youth aid.

McDonald’s has now been added to a growing list of local businesses and premises the teenagers have been trespassed from, including the EA Networks sports stadium.

for them to offend. Breaching a trespass order will result in their arrest,” Banfield said.

“We are aware of a lot of their offending but we don’t get it all – we need to hear from anyone who sees this group behaving in an anti-social or intimidating way.

“We may not be able to respond immediately, but we will respond and where possible put them before the court.”

New citizens welcomed at ceremony

Mayor Donna Favel welcomed 59 new citizens in a ceremony at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre yesterday. Families and individuals, from as close as Australia, to as far afield as Jordan, were sworn in.

This is the largest group of new citizens to be welcomed to the region, after the decision was made to have four ceremonies a year, compared to the previous six. Communications officer Meg Rawson said it was also the first time the main auditorium of the event centre had been used for the event, due to the large number of people present.

Proceedings began with a performance from the Ashburton Borough School kapa haka group, followed by a small address from Favel, welcoming the to-be citizens, saying “this will be part of fulfilling the hopes and dreams that brought you to this land.”

Following this, the new citizens swore allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen of New Zealand.

A video message from the governor general Patsy Reddy was played, followed by one from the minister of internal affairs, Peter Dunne.

Following this, the new citizens were invited to the stage to be presented with certificates and a gift of a seedling kowhai tree.

Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew spoke, introducing herself to the new citizens before everyone enjoyed a morning tea in the foyer as New Zealanders.

One new citizen, Evans Chibhanguza, first moved to New Zealand from Zimbabwe 13 years ago, but citizenship and making Ashburton his home was not always the final goal.

“I left home looking for opportunity, unemployment was high and a lot of young people were moving away to find jobs, and I ended up in Ashburton,” he said. “In the first few years you always hold hope that things will improve back home and that you can go back, but I found a job, made friends, found a wife and had a child, so Ashburton is home now.”

Gaining citizenship was the final piece of the puzzle, now Ashburton and New Zealand are truly home, and Chibhanguza is “happy”.

Rates to rise 5.73 per cent

After two days of cost cutting and juggling budget requests, Ashburton ratepayers can expect to face a 5.73 per cent rate rise in the next financial year.

Over those two days Ashburton District councillors worked through dozens of departmental budgets presented by staff and listened to a large number of requests for non-budgeted spending. They started their deliberations with a 5.42 per cent increase on the board and ended with a list of more than 20 items of additional expenditure requests.

The biggest loser was the council’s parks and reserves department. Manager David Askin was sent back to carve more than $100,000 out of his budget.

EA Networks Centre manager Steve Prescott had a day of wins and losses.

He achieved a cash injection of almost $500,000 over his budget to ensure cooling systems were installed in the pool complex,

generators were replaced, security was enhanced and new equipment bought for the stadium.

In exchange he was asked to carve $50,000 of his costs and to lift his income by $50,000 through increasing fees. In the council’s long-term plan for next year, rates were set to rise by more than 11 per cent, but big cost savings on the wheelie bin project (due to be introduced on September 1), meant savings of more than $1 million.

Included in the extra expenditure was $65,000 for an executive assistant for mayor Donna Favel (a new position) and money for extra staff in two other areas of council.

An extra $200,000 was signed off for preliminary work on replacing Ashburton’s under the river sewer line and $60,000 for a new staff member at the Ashburton Museum.

Several areas of unbudgeted expenditure will have no impact on rates, with the money coming from reserves funds.

Museum visitors to be charged?

If the Ashburton Museum wants extra staff perhaps it should start charging visitors a fee at the door ,says Ashburton District councillor Russell Ellis.

He made the pay to visit suggestion at a workshop on council budgets after museum manager Tanya Robinson requested extra funds for a visitor services and public programmes employee.

“In the old building the museum lived within the grant we gave them; now they cost money in the new building. I don’t want school groups to be charged but I do wonder if we should charge people to come through,” Ellis said.

box and this yielded about $2400 a year in income, Robinson said.

Councillor Stuart Wilson was also keen on a charging regime, but Selwyn Price said that museums internationally had tried charging people and had watched their attendance numbers drop dramatically.

“I don’t think this is a starter if you want the museum to be patronised,” he said.

Robinson said data from other museums supported this, showing that patronage dropped to 25 per cent of its previous levels when a charge to visit was introduced.

A suggestion that locals could visit for free if they produced local ID such as a power bill but found no support.

If the museum ran well with its five paid staff and 32 volunteers, Neil Brown wanted to know why the new position couldn’t be filled by a volunteer.

Volunteers were a great asset to the museum Robinson said, but many were only there for three hours once a week or fortnight and that made continuity very difficult. The new position was about developing public programmes so the museum’s collection could be shared more widely, she said.

While they weren’t keen on funding a new position at the museum, councillors did not want to scrap the idea and decided they would revisit the extra spending once workshops wrapped up.

Rural Women NZ back domestic violence bill Rural Women New Zealand is backing a bill which would add extra protection for victims of domestic violence.

The Domestic Violence – Victims’ Protection Bill, introduced

by Green Party MP Jan Logie, is currently before Parliament, and RWNZ has asked Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Woodhouse and his fellow MPs to support it.

The bill seeks to address harms

experienced by victims, by focusing on how workplaces can be made a safer and more accommodating place for victims.

It would extend leave provisions to include domestic violence leave, as when women leave a violent situation it can be very hard for them to manage court proceedings, counselling, housing and the needs of their children without extra leave.

Work at a regular time and

place can make work a target for the abuser, but with employer support through flexible working arrangements, that can be adjusted to support the employee.

“RWNZ believe that the bill will have an impact on people who are victims of domestic violence and help support them when they need to leave the relationship,” RWNZ national president Fiona Gower said.

“Rural women often have to

travel long distances between home and work and it can be very difficult for them to move away from a violent relationship.

“The services for helping victims of domestic violence are mostly located in urban areas.

Enabling rural women to take time off work to access services, is a step toward helping them to move away from a violent home, and setting a plan in place to rebuild their lives.”

RWNZ recently made a submission on the Government’s family violence law changes, in support of adding protection of animals to legislation. Violence to animals is often part of the package of abuse.

Comments were also made about the lack of near-neighbours and isolation in general, also a woman’s support is often from friends and family of the perpetrator.

Annette’s marathon effort

For Ashburton runner and fundraiser, Annette Cunningham, her last race has left her with some beef with the Buller.

Cunningham ran the Buller Gorge Half-Marathon in an effort to raise money for the Cancer Society.

She chose to donate to the Cancer Society for the support they provided her father while battling the illness and wanted to give something back.

She chose to do it through doing a sponsored run as she had been a keen runner before motherhood.

However, no matter how perfectly laid a plan, something can always go wrong.

“About a week before the race I picked up a chest infection, and had a reaction to the medicine I was given which made things a bit worse,” she said.

However, having gone so far and put in so much work preparing, Cunningham said she had to take part.

The race was a struggle for the

mother-of-three, being forced to stop regularly due to illness, which resulted in a finishing time one hour over her target time of two-and-a-half hours.

Despite many people telling her throughout the race to stop as she was too ill, she carried on to the finish, but not without the race taking its toll.

Cunningham had to be admitted to hospital due to dehydration after the event, and required three bags of IV fluids to recover.

Through sponsorships, especially from Facebook, Cunningham was able to raise $620 for the Cancer Society, and already has eyes on possibly doing another sponsored run.

“It was a fantastic thing to do and I know I will be back next year to have a proper go at the race,” she said.

Right - Annette Cunningham faced a difficult run in the Buller Gorge Half-Marathon but still put her running shoes to work and made it to the finish.

$5000 reward offered for kokako sightings A $5000 reward offered to anyone who can confirm the South Island kokako is still alive, generated 40 reports of possible encounters, and interest from around the world.

The South Island Kokako Charitable Trust announced the reward last month.

The bird was considered extinct until 2013, when credible sightings prompted a reclassification.

Kokako trust spokeswoman Inger Perkins said the response had been phenomenal.

“We have received over 40 reports of possible encounters, stretching back a few decades for a few of them,” Perkins said.

“Since the trust’s website was set up a few years ago, a handful of possible encounters are logged each year, so to receive so many reports in the past month is a fantastic result.”

Perkins said they were busy following them all up.

When the trust had analysed and compiled all the information, it would publish the most likely areas so that enthusiastic searchers could head out and find the evidence.

“We also think that some people may be keeping their encounters under their hats so that they can get that evidence before sharing.

Whichever way brings us the evidence, we’re happy and we’re eagerly awaiting the opportunity to pay the reward.”

The Department of Conservation said that when South Island kokako were shifted from extinct to “data deficient”, it was on the basis of a large number of possible sightings presented in a submission.

“Those sightings are likely to have been all that were known about at the time, but they had been collected over many years, and there were less than 100,” DOC spokeswoman Jose Watson said.

The sightings DOC knew about had been in a variety of locations.

The trust would prefer a verifiable photograph or other physical evidence of the bird over claims to have heard its calls.

It will cost almost $60,000 more of ratepayers’ money next year to run Ashburton’s district library.

In her budget Watson has included $20,000 to buy radio frequency identification tags for book stocks.

This will enable the library to move to a self checkout system.

This project will have an all up cost of $44,000 and will include one self-issue machine.

The book tagging is anticipated to take place over two years, but it would mean the switch to the new system would

be seamless when the move to a new facility was made, she said.

A second self-issue machine is budgeted in the 2019–2020 long-term plan.

“If we start putting the tags on now it’s a job done in advance and we can do it with existing staff,” Watson said.

A major contributor to the increased cost of running the library is the allocation of overhead charges from the council.

Questions about pipes Researchers looking into the causes of mouth cancer say booze and smokes are the major culprits but have raised a flag about the use of water-pipes or “hookahs”.

A study published in the New Zealand Medical Journal yesterday has found alcohol consumption, followed by tobacco are the most prevalent risk factors for oral cancer among Kiwis.

The researchers from the Dunedin Oral Pathology Department said current smokers were four times more likely to develop mouth cancer than non-smokers, while the risk for heavy smokers was 20 times greater.

They found that risk also synergised with alcohol, with those who were both heavy smokers and drinkers 48 times more likely to develop oral cancer.

But they flagged concerns over a popular belief smoking tobacco using the Middle-Eastern style water pipe known as shisha, nargileh or hookah was perceived to

be healthier than cigarettes, despite evidence to the contrary.

“It has been shown that water-pipe use exposes smokers to substantially greater amounts of carcinogens than cigarettes,” they said.

“One 60-minute water-pipe smoking session is estimated to expose the user to carcinogens equivalent to as many as 10 cigarettes.”

They said despite one study in Sydney showing a quarter of Arabic-speaking residents used water pipes there, and New Zealand’s demographics changing, there had been no research into the use of the devices here.

“Research is required to estimate the actual prevalence of use of water-pipe smoking,” they said.

The study raised similar questions about the use of chewingtobacco-style “oral preparations”.

Long wait over for Lorde fans After a week of enigmatic videos, cryptic clues and a green-lit treasure hunt across Auckland, Lorde’s fans have finally turned up their speakers to listen to her new single.

Releasing Green Light over the internet yesterday, Lorde also appeared on Apple’s Beats 1 radio station saying she had worked hard on the track.

“For me it has been a couple of years since I put anything out,” she said.

“I knew it had to be really special.”

She also revealed it had a personal story.

“This song is actually about a heartbreak. It is my first major heartbreak.” “[It] is really about those moments immediately after your life changes and those silly little things you gravitate to.”

Fans on Twitter immediately praised the song, which was released with a video directed by Los Angeles-based filmmaker Grant Singer, and will be part of an album called Melodrama.

hey say true love never dies and the heartwarming photo of an elderly man feeding his wife is certainly proof of that.

The snap, which is sweeping the internet, shows a 96-year-old man from the US tenderly feeding his wife during their date night, according to the Daily Mail.

A fellow diner, who took the photo, decided to strike up a conversation with the man and discovered that his wife, to whom he had been married to for almost 75 years, had Alzheimer’s.

The image has been shared by Love What Matters on Facebook by the anonymous diner who included his thoughts and said in his post: “My whole life I’ve yearned for a love that strong.

“Getting all the way to the end of the line with the person you started out with is one of the most glorious things on the face of this earth. Could a couple be more blessed than to have that happen?”

People have subsequently taken to the comments section in their droves to share similar tales of enduring love in a series of heartwarming posts.

The elderly couple were enjoying a date night at Wendy’s.

The man in the photo told the photographer that if he and his wife make it to June, they will be celebrating 75 years of marriage.

The top comment read: “My grandpa would feed my grandma long after she had forgotten who he was; however, she wouldn’t eat for anyone else.

Somewhere in her heart’s memory she knew who he was.”

Another user shared a tale of their own, writing: “Beautiful story, my eyes are teary. Reminds me of my mother who I took care of for three years be-

fore she passed from Alzheimer’s and heart failure two years ago.”

“Even after my parents divorced after being married for 30 years, my father still came over to help me with my mother. He loved her since he was 19 and never stopped.”

Another user also wrote about her parent’s story: “This is my parents, they been married for 66 years and my mom has Alzheimer’s and doesn’t know my father but he comes to see her every day and she smiles when she sees him. I love them so much and love to see their unconditional love.”

Chch attack victim lucky to be alive The victim of a horror unprovoked attack after a Christchurch music festival last weekend has smiled, much to the relief of her family – but they say it’s still “very early days yet”.

Amelia Rayner, 29, was punched in the throat when she and her boyfriend were leaving the Electric Avenue festival at Hagley Park about 11pm on Saturday.

Her mother Barbara Rayner was told by surgeons that her “outgoing” daughter was a “very lucky girl” to still be alive.

But concerns remain over permanent damage to Amelia’s speech after her trachea, or windpipe, was crushed.

Barbara said surgery on Wednesday went well but Amelia remains sedated.

“She should gradually come back. She did smile yesterday though. It was really lovely, it was so good,” she said.

“It’s still very early days yet. We’re just taking each day as it comes.

“We have got a lot of support, and family on both sides, with her partner. And so we share it.

“It’s something you just do not expect to happen to yourselves, but you just have to hang on in there.”

Barbara said she received a phone call about 11.15pm from Amelia’s boyfriend, who said: “We’ve been attacked. Amelia’s come off worse than me.”

She said the attack near Park Terrace and Salisbury Street “took [the couple] by surprise”.

“They don’t know why they were attacked – [the attackers] took Amelia’s hat to start and maybe something was said between them? But no-one deserves something like this to happen to them.”

Detective Sergeant Colin Baillie yesterday said the investigation is ongoing. A number of people have been spoken to, he said, but police are still appealing for witnesses to the attack to come forward.

School turns wi-fi off to encourage chat A Taranaki high school is turning off its internet during break times to force students off their screens to talk to each other.

Francis Douglas Memorial College in New Plymouth has started term one with a new rule governing wi-fi access in a radical measure to get pupils away from digital devices for at least 45 minutes a day.

In the Catholic college’s latest newsletter principal Martin Chamberlain has announced that the college is cutting the internet to pupils during intervals and lunchtimes for their own good.

The college provides campus-

wide wireless internet to help with student learning. It is also free for communication and recreational use.

But Chamberlain said this had led to a small number of pupils who were new to the school taking advantage of the unrestricted internet and being glued to their devices.

“At break times, however, our observation of screen fixation among some students has led to our decision to switch off the internet for 15 minutes at interval and 30 minutes at lunchtime.

“Despite many having their own internet plan and some games being stored on-phone,

this should encourage more of the radical practice of face-toface conversation!” he wrote.

Chamberlain told the Herald the issue of constant device use was not necessarily healthy for mind or body and pupils needed to learn how to take a break.

“We certainly see the merits of cellphones in the school for learning and education, but we also like the old-fashioned notion of face-to-face communication,” he said.

While it was early days there had not been any violent kickback from pupils and everyone seemed to accept the situation.

For almost sixty years the Ashburton Branch of the Hearing Association has been providing a range of services to members.

These include hearing tests, advice and assistance with hearing aids, sales of batteries, hearing aid maintenance and wax removal.

Those who suffer hearing impairment have an unseen disability which can have a major impact on their social life.

Recognising this and because it has a holistic approach to assisting members, the Hearing Association considers it important to provide opportunities for people to mix, mingle, enjoy each other’s company and have fun.

Social activities, including meals and bus trips take place on a regular basis.

Without doubt a real strength of the Ashburton Hearing Association is its people.

Over the years many talented and capable members keen to assist the hearing impaired have

helped administer the Ashburton Hearing Association.

They have done this with dedication, enthusiasm and prudence without ever losing sight of the aims of the organisation.

From very humble beginnings the Hearing Association, which has over the years received minimal public funding, is now proud to be in a position of selfsufficiency.

Consequently members only pay a very modest subscription to enjoy the benefits of membership.

It’s fair to say the organisation has always “stuck to the knitting” which has been part of a recipe for success.

And that success means the Hearing Association is well placed

to provide free confidential advice to those who feel their hearing is deteriorating.

Hearing loss can affect people of all ages and walks of life, it can result from a variety of causes and it is estimated that one in seven adult New Zealanders are hearing impaired.

Those who feel others are mumbling, need to ask for things to be repeated, receive complaints about the T V or other devices being too loud or find hearing in group situations difficult should seek help.

And a good starting place to get that help is at the Hearing Association.

Your Ears – How Ears Hear Our ears are wonderfully sophisticated organs that convert sound waves into electrical signals our brain can understand.

Ears catch sound waves, change them into nerve impulses, and send them to the brain for interpretation.

Ears pick up sound waves.

Three parts of the ear work together to help us hear.

1. The outer ear 2. The middle ear 3. The inner ear.

But that’s not all – ears keep us upright! They are our main organs of balance.

Outer Ear The sound waves first go into the outer ear.

This is what we traditionally think of as our ears.

It’s the part of the ear we can see.

Sound waves are picked up by the pinna, and sent down the ear canal.

The ear canal makes some sounds stronger.

The sound waves hit the ear drum and make it vibrate, transmitting this vibration into the middle ear.

Hearing impairment is an unfair and unseen disability, which can cause all sorts of problems for the sufferer and others. It can place a huge strain on relationships and lead to all manners of misunderstanding.

Far from allowing hearing impairment to disrupt their lives, many local people have supported one another through membership of the Ashburton Hearing Association.

Good hearing is a blessing so we need to protect our ears – it’s wise to avoid putting anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.

Deafness cannot always be prevented but it’s nothing short of madness to put our hearing at risk.

Caring For Your Ears Your ears, and therefore your hearing, can be damaged by trauma, infection, or even excessive personal hygiene. The hearing mechanisms are delicate.

Is wax causing a problem?

• Never put anything inside an ear to remove wax or to scratch

Wax can build up and block the ear canal. It is more common in men.

• Keep the ear canal free of obstructions

This usually happens if the ear canal is narrow or hairs or a hearing aid mould are obstructing it.

Symptoms of wax build up include dull hearing, tinnitus, earache, vertigo, coughing, a feeling that the ear is plugged up, and sometimes jaw and facial pain.

• Some ear infections can damage hearing • Physical trauma can rupture your ear drum and damage the delicate bones of the middle ear • Protect your ears from loud noise.

EAR WAX What is it?

Ear wax is normal. It’s a natural protector of the ear.

Ear wax is produced in the ear canal, by the cerumen and sebum glands. The discharge from these glands, skin flakes, dust and other debris create wax which works its way to the entrance of the ear. As we get older, ear wax can become drier.

What to do about it?

Mid Canterbury rowing superstar Veronica Wall may have missed out on the major prize at last night’s Canterbury Sports Awards, but the achievement of just being named a finalist is a true recognition of her efforts on the water.

Wall, who is dominating on

the waters around the South Island and further afield currently, was one of four finalists named in the Canterbury Young Sportswoman category at the awards but missed out to rising cycling star, Kate Smith who is on track for the Tokoyo Olympics in 2020.

There was a familiar Ashburton face up on the stage at last

night’s awards ceremony with Ashburton born Roly Crichton named Sports Coach of the Year, thanks in large to his efforts with Paralympic swimming champ, Sophie Pascoe.

It was a big night for the team with Pascoe named Sportswoman of the Year and she also picked up Supreme Canterbury Sportsperson of the Year – off

the back of another outstanding Paralympic Games.

All Black Captain Kieran Read was on hand to collect the Sportsman of the Year Award while newcomer William Stedman earned Junior Sportsman of the Year honours following a stellar Paralympic performance in the Men’s 400m and Long Jump (T36). At 16, he was the

youngest member of the ParaAthletics team to compete at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Another highlight of the evening was the introduction of the region’s two newest sporting legends. Dick Tayler (athletics) and Cheryl Kemp (softball) joined the ranks of legends for their contributions to sport in Canterbury.

A spot in the final of the Muirhead Rosebowl is up for grabs for two of the remaining four sides in Mid Canterbury senior cricket this afternoon.

After a competitive season in which results have ebbed and flowed, there will be no tomorrow for two of the sides in action today with next week’s final spots on the line.

Allenton, who have claimed

every piece of silverware so far this season, will be out to give themselves a shot at a clean sweep when they host Lauriston in one match while Coldstream will play host to Methven in a replay of last weekend in the other match.

Allenton have the wood on most sides in all formats this season, but Lauriston is one side who can claim a victory over their rivals this weekend, having beaten them in a round robin match

Allenton’s Jeff Naish will be looking to lead his side to victory in the semi-finals of the Muirhead Rosebowl today.

They will need to take that confidence into today’s match with Allenton clear front-runners to pick up the Muirhead Rosebowl next week based on their form this season.

They’ve been able to call on all their experienced heads at valuable times and guys like Lyall Jemmett and Jeff Naish have held the fort when required and produced solid results.

Lauriston have had their own reliable members, none more so than Rob Hooper, who is in line for the major batting prize for the season with his consistent results in the middle.

The youthful Lauriston side may have to count on the element of surprise out on the pitch if they are to usurp Allenton but guided by the likes of Hooper and Bevan Ravenscroft they are capable of causing an upset.

This afternoon’s other match, between Coldstream and Methven could potentially be the game of the weekend.

The two evenly matched sides have split results against each other this season with two wins and losses each but it is Coldstream who are carrying the confidence into the match after winning last weekend, while Methven have struggled, losing two games on the trot including their embarrassing defeat at the hands of Allenton a fortnight ago.

Rookie pivot relishing start Utility Mitchell Hunt is excited about the prospect of going up against Lima Sopoaga in the Crusaders’ Super Rugby derby with the Highlanders in Dunedin.

Hunt will make his first start for the red and blacks in place of the injured Richie Mo’unga at fiveeighth and said the playmaker has given him plenty of support heading into the blockbuster clash.

“It’s an exciting opportunity,” said Hunt.

Mid Canty netball stalwarts recognised at national level

Three of Mid Canterbury netball’s longstanding volunteers were recognised at a national level last weekend.

Karla Newlands, Barbara Reid and Rosemary Adlam were all awarded Netball New Zealand Service Awards for their time, effort, energy and passion that they have put into netball in the Mid Canterbury region.

The awards were presented at the Netball New Zealand Council meeting in Queenstown last weekend with all three Mid Canterbury recipients on hand to receive their awards with 16 others from around the country.

“It was a really special moment for all of us I think,” Newlands said.

“We all commented about how over-

whelmed we felt when we were brought back into the meeting and presented with the awards.”

For Adlam and Reid there was no surprises, they had been told about their awards to entice them into going on the journey to Queenstown for the meeting, but for Newlands it came as a complete shock.

“I had absolutely no idea, I was pretty shocked.”

Netball New Zealand make the awards annually to recognise the efforts of some of those at the grassroots level who don’t get the recognition they probably deserve and Newlands said both Reid and Adlam were more than deserving.

“The hours they have put into netball in this area is incredible and they are really deserving,” she said.

Queensland Reds coach Nick Stiles has labelled his team’s 26-19 Super Rugby loss to the Western Force as atrocious.

The Reds led 19-12 in the 49th minute after winger Eto Nabuli ran onto a perfectly-weighted grubber kick from Duncan Paia’aua to score his third try.

But the Force controlled play from that point on, scoring 14 unanswered points to secure the upset win.

Stiles didn’t mince his words after the match, labelling his team’s set-piece as sloppy and ruing a series of unforced errors.

The Reds threatened to snatch a draw at the death, only for the Force to hold on grimly in defence.

“It was an atrocious game of football,” Stiles said.

“We didn’t deserve to win it. And I’m glad we didn’t score a try at the end of the game to get a draw, because it wouldn’t have been a fair reflection on the performance.”

The Reds have the chance to bounce back when they host the Crusaders at Suncorp Stadium next Saturday.

Stiles said his team’s pride was hurting, and words weren’t about to fix it.

Starvoia a worry for her trainers Trainers John and Karen Parsons both have contrasting feelings going into the Listed NZB Insurance Stakes at Wingatui today.

While delighted with the progress of the favourite Residential, who will be chasing a hat-trick of wins, the couple are frustrated with the on-going hoof problems experienced by the talented stablemate Starvoia.

“She’s had the foot problems for most of her starts and it’s been a nightmare to get the work into her,” Karen Parsons said.

“She’s still going good races, but if only we could get her 100 per cent.

“She galloped well enough the other morning so hopefully she’ll be right for Saturday.”

Starvoia won her first two starts before finishing second in the Listed NZB Canterbury Belle Stakes behind La Diosa, the subsequent Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner who opened her Sydney account with a strong win in last Saturday’s Gr.2 Surround Stakes.

Starvoia won again two starts later at Wingatui on Boxing Day and since then she has had to set-

tle for placings in her three Guineas starts. She was third to Raise You Ten in the Listed Gore Guineas and has chased Residential home in both the Listed Dunedin Guineas and Listed Southland Guineas.

The margin between Residential and Starvoia in the Dunedin Guineas was a mere nose, while Residential, a daughter of Pins, had a more comprehensive win in the Southland Guineas, scoring by four lengths.

On Saturday the pair will be dropping back from 1600 to 1400m, but that is unlikely to prevent what looks another stable quinella.

Residential has gone from strength to strength this campaign and has now won four of her 10 starts. The score card between her and Starvoia is two apiece after she was beaten home by the Starcraft filly on Boxing Day (third) and 10th in the Gore Guineas.

“She hit a wet spot in the Gore Guineas and that put her under pressure,” Parsons said. “It’s a shame because she has won the other two Guineas.”

Purdon aiming for fifth Kindergarten Mark Purdon shoots for five Kindergartens in a row and a remake of the classic 2014 Wyndham Cup is on the cards, making today’s feature meeting at the Young Quinn Raceway one to savour.

Purdon’s success in the Kindergarten began slowly and his early winners, So Cool and Sir Clive, were six years apart.

He was both the trainer and the driver then, hasn’t been on the winner since but prepared Messini to win for Tim Williams in 2013, Itz Bettor To Win for Blair Orange in 2014, Waikiki Beach for Brent Barclay in 2015 and Pacing Major for Dexter Dunn in 2016.

For the last three he was training in partnership with Natalie Rasmussen and last year their runners actually took out the trifecta with More The Better second and You Gotta Have Faith third.

Purdon’s most recent drive in the race was on Alta Ronaldo, third in 2014, and he was looking forward to reining All U Need Is Faith this year, but on Thursday the brother to last year’s winner was scratched.

That has left them with Major Lucky, half-brother to last year’s runner up, and Auckland Rector’s niece The Devils Own, to represent them on Saturday.

Both have trialled well and sprinted home impressively without winning.

Until they have had a chance on raceday, Purdon said he was reluctant to label them but did reveal that Rasmussen had done all the work with The Devil’s Own

and picked him as the best. Major Lucky, he said, was a good gaited youngster and from the one draw capable of going out from the start quickly and bowling along in front.

The Devil’s Own has drawn the outside of the front line.

In his first trial, The Devil’s Own finished runner up to Tuapeka Trick, one of two Robert Dunn reps in the Kindergarten. He is the drive of son Dexter on Saturday but was handled in the trial by son John, soon led and raced clear in the straight.

He debuted for John at Addington on 23 February, was left parked for the last 1300 metres, but stuck gamely for fourth.

John Dunn said Tuapeka Trick would have finished closer with an easier run but he hasn’t been knocked by it. With a good run this week he could be in it, said Dunn, who be aboard stablemate The Brooklyn Brawler.

A winner for Maurice McKendry at Alexandra Park in December, The Brooklyn Brawler was back south for the Sapling Stakes at Ashburton. In the hands of Dunn, he led from the 1100, was out finished by Cole Porter but still clocked just a tick over 1:54 for the trip.

Dunn confirmed it was a really good run and said the Art Major colt has a bit of early speed so he is likely to go out hard early and see what happens. He names The Brooklyn Brawler the best of his pair.

SA relishing close ODI duel South Africa are relishing another big pressure duel with New Zealand at Eden Park today.

Sound familiar? Think back to the World cup semifinal in March, 2015. It doesn’t get much bigger than that, when New Zealand won on the penultimate ball of a rain-affected match to make their first cup final.

“It’s a nice challenge for us as a team, and I’m really looking forward to it,” test captain Faf du Plessis said yesterday.

The ODI series is all square,

2-2, after Martin Guptill’s pyrotechnics at Hamilton on Wednesday night brought New Zealand level.

“It’s a little opportunity to play in a big pressure game. New Zealand are a team who play the big moments really well.

“I don’t think this series has been the best cricket we’re capable of.

This ground has great memories for both teams, so we’re looking forward to a nice loud crowd again.”

South Africa easily won the only T20 clash of the tour at Eden Park, when legspinner Imran Tahir destroyed New Zealand’s lower order with five for 24 to set up a 78-run win.

Du Plessis believes South Africa have been “a little off the ball” during the ODI series.

“We’ve been firing at 65 per cent on tour, we haven’t been consistent enough in the style of cricket we want to play.

“We’ve got to be relentless in the areas we bowl, and we’ve

been very soft in giving boundaries away.

“With the bat we’ve not got enough hundreds in the top six (none compared to two by New Zealand).

“That’s something we pride ourselves on.”

South Africa lost their ODI No 1 ranking to Australia recently.

Win today and they will regain that spot. New Zealand will stay at No 3 on the list, win or lose at Eden Park.

Patel, Neesham recalled in test squad All-rounder Jimmy Neesham and spin bowler Jeetan Patel have been re-called to the Black Caps test squad for the three-match series against South Africa.

They replace Matt Henry and Dean Brownlie as the new names from the squad that was named for the Bangladesh series in January.

Patel last played a test for New Zealand last October in India following a three year break from the test arena. In 21 tests he’s taken 58 wickets for an average of 48.48.

The last time Patel played a test on home soil was in 2010 against Australia.

Neesham’s last test was the same game against in India in Indore. He averages 37.94 with the bat in tests and 46 with the ball.

South African-born Neil Wagner has been named in the squad after being under an injury cloud. He hurt the ring finger of his left hand while fielding for Otago last month.

As Black Caps coach Mike Hesson confirmed on Thursday, Black Caps ODI opener Martin Guptill hasn’t been re-called to the test arena after being told to work at becoming a middle order batsman in the domestic competition first.

Govt tackles tax avoidance ence in New Zealand, including administrative rules to make it easier to assess and collect tax from “unco-operative multinationals”.

Foreign trusts are legal but they can be used to hide wealth from tax authorities, and for money laundering.

After the papers were leaked there was an international investigation into Panama-based Mossack Fonseca’s activities and the heads of the law firm are in custody.

Mossack Fonseca, the company that was at the centre of the Panama Papers scandal, is reported to have quit New Zealand.

It set up numerous foreign trusts here and details of them were revealed among the millions of documents leaked last year.

Since then the government has tightened the rules around foreign trusts, making New Zealand a less attractive destination.

Mossack Fonseca deregistered its local company in August, RNZ reports.

Collins said New Zealand expected to sign the agreement in June.

Revenue Minister Judith Collins wants to stop multinationals moving profits offshore in a crack down on tax avoidance.

She and Finance Minister Steven Joyce released three consultation papers at an international fiscal conference in Queenstown yesterday.

“We welcome multinationals’ participation in our economy, but we also expect them to pay tax based on their actual levels of economic activity in New Zealand,” Collins said.

o those people who became New Zealand citizens in Ashburton yesterday, welcome and congratulations.

You can now officially call this beautiful country home.

In the first of four ceremonies of the year, an impressive 59 people were sworn in in a ceremony at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

This is the largest group of new citizens to be welcomed, after the decision was made to have four ceremonies a year, compared to the previous six.

From Australia to Zimbabwe, representatives from all nationalities were welcomed, indicating a booming district and vast range of cultures making up our region.

These citizens are now eligible to enjoy all the benefits of living in New Zealand – the ability to come and go as they please, hold a New Zealand passport, and have full education and economic rights – as well as perhaps the one downside of paying taxes.

The Ashburton District Council hosts the formal citizenship ceremony where new citizens swear allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen and take the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance.

Every single one of these people, and their families, will contribute to make Mid Canterbury a diverse, creative and dynamic society.

The importance of that piece of paper confirming their citizenship, a New Zealand passport, and a welcoming ceremony, is a life-changing moment that will stay with these individuals for the rest of their lives.

It’s a new start, a fresh beginning and a chance to embrace life as a Kiwi.

But that doesn’t mean they will be forgetting where they came from.

Dressing in cultural attire was encouraged at the ceremony and many opted to make the most of the opportunity with beautiful clothing on display.

It’s important they retain pride and connections with their homeland and ensure their children know their heritage and where they come from.

I was particularly touched to see that each new citizen is presented with certificates, as well as a gift of a seedling Kowhai tree.

As they settle into their new lives, it is a poignant metaphor that the roots of their new lives will grow and develop as they embark on a new chapter as fully-fledged New Zealanders.

This column marks a milestone for Nick Lindo and the Guardian! It is his 500th article for us since September 4, 2004, and he’s looking forward to hitting the 1000th.

Decision time for Little J

acinda Ardern won the Mount Albert by-election on Saturday at a canter, if not an actual gallop. Had she not done so – with no National candidate standing – the Labour Party would have been finished, once and for all.

However, hers was a safe “landslide” victory. At once, every political pundit in the country wanted to give us his – or her – take on this event and is, thus, now twittering, commentating, Facebooking and analysing fit to bust. Therefore, I thought you might feel I should do the same.

So, say no more; I’ll just go ahead and do it.

It seems to me Jacinda is every party leader’s dream, young (36), attractive, dynamic and – highly significant – natural in front of the camera. As a List MP since 2008, with any number of shadow portfolios behind her, she now finds herself Member of Parliament for Mount Albert, following in the steps of two recently past Labour leaders, David Shearer and, the Great Leader herself, Helen Clark. It’s a legacy she is sure to build on, generating newfound popularity for the party as she goes and, to use those long past their use-by words, “Labour needs all the help it can get”. Now comes news party deputy leader Annette King has nobly decided to “stand aside”, thus giving Ms Ardern a real chance to become the deputy in her place.

It appears to me to be something of a “sacrificial” decision because, until Jacinda emerged with fanfare and flourish last Saturday, I doubt whether Ms King had any intention of giving the political game away this year.

Already, therefore, a “Jacinda surge”is beginning to sweep the country, possibly dragging the rest of Labour behind it. At the moment of her “triumph”, though, and standing beside his budding new colleague, Mr Little, seemed less than completely enthused.

In fact, I heard him say, with my own hearing-aided ears, there wasn’t a vacancy for the deputy position.

Perhaps he was thinking he may now have to ask Annette to move over and let Jacinda have her head. He might have found that a tall and unappealing order, but with Annette graciously making it easy for him he can now be just as enthusiastic about Jacinda taking over the position as everyone else seems to be.

Whatever the machinations, if there were any, Annette, in a last gesture of many of support to the party, accepted her time was up.

So are we witnessing an early turning point in the election race only recently begun or will the Mt Albert February by-election soon be forgotten in the turmoil of political attack and counter ahead? I have the feeling it will be the former.

Even now, though, we should never overlook the labyrinthine factionalism by which Labour parties everywhere have always

been beset, which have more than once turned imminent victory into defeat on the night.

Meanwhile, our newly promoted PM, Mr English, has once again disturbed the home of the hornets with his, off-the-cuff comment – the source of many of his “snap” opinions – to the effect that, as he understands it, employers find it hard to take on home-grown workers as so many of them fail the statutory drugs test, these days required.

So, says Bill, the said employers are forced to look elsewhere and their eye inevitably falls on recently arrived, drug-free immigrants, who are only too pleased to take the jobs otherwise earmarked for locals.

“Disgraceful”, bellow Winston and the President of the Trade Union movement in this country, Richard Wagstaff.

They argue fiercely the tiny number of the drug-afflicted unemployed involved make up a minimum percentage of the work force and the PM is blowing the matter up to ludicrous proportions.

In the “blue corner”, however, the employers agree wholeheartedly with Mr English.

Would-be workers are disinclined to change their social habits.

They like their “dope”, they say, and will not be giving it up anytime soon. So impasse reigns and the issue is hidden in the haze .... of “P”, perhaps.,

Over the seas but not far enough away, Mr Trump remains a global if highly dangerous, laughing-stock.

Many presidents have been on the receiving end of often humorous comment but what Trump gets is a form of amused derision, an entirely less friendly version of what has been the norm up to now.

Such derision for the man is hardly surprising after the lengths he has gone to to insult both the media and all the people who work in and for it. Even the flaky George W has emphasised the importance of the media to a wholesome democracy.

Earlier in the week, Mr Trump gave the traditional Presidential speech to Congress, during which, for once, he seemed to stop shouting at and threatening his audience, thus acquiring a belated whiff of dignity but without providing details of how or what he has in mind for the United States of America is to be achieved. It will need more than a massive hike in the defence budget.

So the political cauldron is beginning to bubble, with quite a few ingredients soon to be added to it from the housing imbroglio and the permanent dispute over education and all its ways.

In other words, plenty to look forward to.

Bank grilled over sackings National Australia Bank boss Andrew Thorburn has copped a grilling from both sides of politics about the consequences for executives and financial planners responsible for mismanaging client funds.

At his second appearance before the House of Representatives economics committee in Canberra yesterday, Thorburn faced questions about financial adviser Graeme Cowper who left the bank in 2009.

He confirmed Cowper was reported to corporate regulator ASIC, and was the “biggest” of 55 planners dismissed between 2009 and 2015.

More than 100 clients had to be compensated a total of $7 million following his dodgy advice.

Labor frontbencher Matt Thistlethwaite wasn’t impressed with the way Cowper departed the bank.

“You allowed him to resign and gave him a payout, I also understand you wrote him a nice letter,” he told Thorburn.

“This is a man that you’ve admitted breached your code of conduct ... you allow him to resign and give him money – I mean are you living in the real world?”

Thorburn refused to elaborate on the finer details of the case citing legal confidential-

Committee chair David Coleman questioned that confidence, given ASIC recently released information about four years of customer breaches requiring NAB repay $35 million.

“I think that’s a fairly debatable comment,” the Liberal MP said.

Thorburn revealed more than 1100 staff were deemed to have not met the bank’s code of conduct.

Two had been dismissed,

while the other three faced disciplinary action.

Consequences for others included a formal warning and a reduction or elimination of any bonus, Thorburn said.

“I think there will be some mismanagement and missteps along the way but the core, our intent and a lot of our processes are very, very sound to encourage how can we help you,” he said.

Thorburn again rejected the need for a royal commission into the sector, but said his bank would comply if one were held.

Malaysia condemns use of nerve agent Malaysia has ramped up the pressure on Pyongyang, issuing a statement condemning the use of a banned toxic chemical weapon in the killing of the half brother of North Korea’s leader.

Malaysia has not directly accused North Korea of being behind the killing of Kim Jong Nam, but the statement from the Foreign Ministry comes hours after a North Korean envoy rejected a Malaysian autopsy finding that VX nerve

agent killed Kim, saying the man probably died of a heart attack.

The statement from Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said it was “greatly concerned” with the use of the toxic chemical.

“Its use at a public place could have endangered the general public”.

The death of Kim, the estranged half brother of North Korea’s ruler, has unleashed a diplomatic battle between Malaysia and North Korea. The au-

topsy is especially sensitive because North Korea had asked Malaysia not to perform one.

Malaysian officials say two women smeared VX nerve agent on Kim’s face as he waited for a flight at Kuala Lumpur’s airport on February 13.

The women, who were caught on grainy surveillance video, have been charged with murder.

Arriving at the studio, the 57-year-old appeared slightly less full of face, though she opted to shroud her famed figure by wearing a billowing ensemble. Nigella first rose to fame back in the ‘90s with her cookbooks after a career in journalism. Nigella, has recently been rumoured to have found an admirer.

Al-Qaida deputy leader killed in US strike 10 killed in A US airstrike in Syria earlier this week killed the deputy leader of al-Qaida, known as Abu al-Khayr al-Masri, the group has confirmed. The death brings a significant blow to the terror network and points to the central role Syria has taken in its operations.

Al-Masri, a veteran Egyptian militant, was the deputy of al-Qaida’s leader Ayman al-Zawahri, and the organisation’s senior figure in Syria. He co-ordinated al-Qaida’s work with other militant groups and played a direct role in developing external plots, according to a US counterterrorism official, who was not authorised to discuss the issue and spoke on condition of anonymity.

came from the SITE Intelligence Group, which said alMasri – the nom de guerre of Egyptian militant Abdullah Mohammed Abdulrahman – may have been killed in a strike on a vehicle in Syria’s northwestern Idlib province.

It cited photos and reports circulating on jihadi social media accounts. Images posted online showed the vehicle with part of the roof blown open.

Al-Qaida’s branches in Yemen and North Africa put out a joint statement that said al-Masri had been killed in a “Crusader strike” in Syria, calling it “another in the crimes of America and its Crusader alliance.” It praised him as a hero and “wise leader” and expressed its condolences to

al-Zawahri, who became the top leader of al-Qaida when Osama bin Laden was killed by US forces in Pakistan in 2011.

The CIA declined to comment on reports of al-Masri’s death.

Al-Zawahri is believed to be based in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region, but many of the group’s senior figures are believed to have moved to Syria, taking advantage of the country’s civil war to establish a presence – though many of them have subsequently been killed in US drone strikes in the past year. An al-Qaida-linked group, Fatah al-Sham, is one of the strongest forces among the rebels fighting to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Local authorities in southwest China say 10 people have been killed and another 38 injured in a collision between a bus and a truck.

The government of Lincang city in Yunnan province says the bus carrying 47 people collided with a truck late Wednesday.

The statement says the truck with two people on board left the road while the bus ended up at the side of the road. It said nine people died at the scene, one person died after receiving medical treatment, and 38 others were injured.

It says the cause is under investigation.

Sir Bruce Forsyth unwell Frail Sir Bruce Forsyth has spent the week in intensive care after being diagnosed with a severe chest infection.

The ailing star was rushed to hospital having fallen ill earlier this week, but is now thought to be hoping to go home after spending five nights in hospital. The 89-year-old former Strictly presenter’s latest health scare was unrelated to two life-threatening aneurysms, and subsequent operation, back in 2015. But it has left him in a fragile state just days after celebrating his 89th birthday at the end of February. The TV legend was preparing to return to the family home in Surrey.

‘Revolving door’ ambassador visits US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has portrayed two meetings he had with Russia’s ambassador to the US as nothing sinister by describing his former senate office in Washington DC as almost having a revolving door where “gossipy” ambassadors from Australia, Canada and many other friend and foe nations would visit.

Sessions, an early supporter of Donald Trump’s successful presidential election campaign, faced calls from senior Democrat members of Congress to resign as attorney general.

The calls came after the Washington Post reported Sessions met with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak twice before the election, including in September at the height of Russia’s cyber campaign aimed at influencing the November 8 presidential vote.

Democrats did score a victory when Sessions announced he would recuse himself from a Justice Department investigation into contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

“Ambassadors are always trying to find out things and advance their agenda,” Sessions, a US Senator for 20 years before Trump nominated him in November to be attorney general, told reporters.

“Lots of the countries that ambassadors I met with, they would lay out their case.

“Ukraine would lay out his case.

Sessions’ September 8 meeting with Kislyak was of most interest as Russia, according to US intelligence officials, was ramping up its election interference campaign.

Sessions said he did not recall if the meeting included talk about the presidential election.

“Most of these ambassadors are pretty gossipy and this was in the campaign season, but I don’t recall any specific political discussions,” Sessions said.

Sessions did remember the Kislyak meeting getting heated as it came soon after a meeting Sessions had with the ambassa-

dor from Ukraine.

Sessions said the Russian ambassador had maintained Russia had “done nothing that was wrong in any area and everybody else was wrong with regard to the Ukraine”.

“It got to be a little bit of a testy conversation at that point,” Sessions said.

Sessions, testifying under oath at a January 10 Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing for the attorney general position, denied he had contact with Russian officials while he was affiliated with Trump’s election campaign.

Respiratory disease may be worsened by black carbon

Cracks appear in Fillon’s campaign

Black carbon found in air pollution can increase the resistance of bacteria which cause respiratory disease, research suggests.

The findings could bring a new understanding of the effect of air pollution on human health, the lead scientist in the University of Leicester study said.

The four-year investigation focused on how pollution in the air thought to be responsible for millions of deaths each year – affects bacteria in the nose, throat and lungs of humans.

It found black carbon, produced when diesel, biomass and biofuels are burned, changes the way bacteria grows, possibly affecting their ability to survive and beat human immune systems.

The study concluded that the resistance of communities of Streptococcus pneumoniae – a major cause of respiratory diseases – to penicillin was increased by black carbon.

It also caused this pathogen to spread from the nose down the respiratory tract, allowing disease to develop.

Dr Julie Morrissey, lead author of the paper, said: “This work increases our understanding of how air pollution affects human health. It shows that the bacteria which cause respiratory infections are affected by air pollution, possibly increasing the risk of infection and the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment of these illnesses.

“Our research could initiate an entirely new understanding of how air pollution affects human health. It will lead to enhancement of research to understand how air pollution leads to severe respiratory problems and perturbs the environmental cycles essential for life.”

The university’s Professor Paul Monks: “The lead investigators have brought together their expertise in genetics, microbiology and air pollution chemistry to provide truly multidisciplinary, groundbreaking insights.

“This research has significant potential to initiate a global research effort to understand a hitherto unknown effect of air pollution.”

More cracks have emerged in French conservative Francois Fillon’s campaign for the presidency, a day after news he faces a formal investigation for allegations he misused public funds.

A flash opinion poll by Harris Interactive showed that only 25 per cent of people now want him to continue as a candidate, down from 35 per cent a month ago, while within his party there were more resignations after his earlier decision to stay in the race.

While Fillon campaigned in southern France ahead of a rally in the city of Nimes, poll favourite Emmanuel Macron announced his full centrist manifesto and far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen was due to give a presentation on the role of the French state in the economy.

With less than two months to go to the April 23 first round vote, polls point to a secondround showdown on May 7

between Macron and Le Pen that Macron would win.

One of the first opinion polls partly taken after Fillon’s legal woes deepened showed his support dipping below 20 per cent for the first time in a week.

The Elabe poll, carried out between Tuesday and Thursday, showed 19 per cent of people planning to support Fillon in the first round, down from 20-21 per cent in the last Elabe poll carried out from February 18-20.

He trailed Le Pen, on 27 per cent, and Macron on 24 per cent.

Fillon already suffered a blow as advisors quit his campaign in protest against his decision to fight on.

Sources said there was a strong push by some in the party to have former prime minister Alain Juppe run, but the plan was vetoed by Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president.

A man has been charged after more than eight kilograms of illegal drugs were discovered during a roadside breath test in Rockhampton. Police allege the man was stopped in Dululu on Thursday afternoon and a search of his vehicle revealed 1kg of ice, nearly 8kg of cannabis and a small amount of cocaine. The 30-year-old Gracemere man was charged with drug and possession offences.
