Nearly five years after one of the most tragic incidents in Ashburton history closed the local Work and Income office, the Ministry of Social Development has found a new, permanent location. The ministry has confirmed they have agreed the vast majority of terms and conditions for their move to 145-153 Tancred
Street as part of the Eastfield complex. Estimates of an opening day are still tentative at this point due to ongoing negotiations, with a window of late-2019 to early-2020 being looked at. Ministry of Social Development regional commissioner John Henderson said they were excited to finally have a permanent location for an office. “We are really thrilled to have a new lo-
cation sorted and it is really exciting for our staff and the community,” he said. “There has been a lot of work for this but it is important for the people we serve, our staff and the taxpayer that we get it right.” The current Ashburton office is based in a portable building in the Ashburton Police Station carpark, something that is not suitable as a long-term solution. “The location has worked well for us and
