Visitors to pay more for huts

It just feels right to become Dames in the year of their 60th birthdays, say Lynda and Jools Topp.

“It feels like it’s not for Jools and me, it’s for all the people who have supported us in New Zealand, and also it’s great for New Zealand entertainment,” said Dame Lynda.

The Topp Twins have been named Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to entertainment in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

“It’s not really going to change us much, we are still country girls at heart,” she added.

The pair have performed in New Zealand and internationally for more than 30 years.

Following being appointed as Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2004, the twins produced the albums Flowergirls and Cowgirls and Honky Tonk Angel, released five best-selling children’s audio books, and regularly toured Australia and New Zealand to sold-out venues.

In 2008 they were inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

The documentary feature film The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls was released in 2009 and won several awards at international film festivals. It broke all previous records for opening day and opening weekend for a New Zealand documentary, and after just four weeks at the box office, it made over $1 million.

From 2014 to 2017 they filmed three series of the television show Topp Country, in which they travelled around New Zealand meeting food producers and home cooks.

The twins have actively raised awareness of breast cancer, including staging the Recovery Tour in 2007 following Jools’ personal experience with the disease, with a percentage of ticket sales being donated to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Dame Lynda spoke to the Guardian as she and Jools prepared to wrap up their 60th birthday concert tour this weekend following their birthday last month.

She was looking forward to Jools visiting this Friday, when the two Dames will both be in Methven as they open their new Topp Country Cafe, alongside Lynda’s partner Donna Topp.

tar and sing a song if there’s a few patrons around,” she said about the opening on Friday.

Dame Lynda also mentioned how honoured some of her characters were about being made a Companion of the Order, with Ken in particular being quite chuffed.

“I’m sure it doesn’t apply to them, but we will probably sneak a few ‘Sir Kens’ in somewhere,” she said.

International visitors will pay roughly double for Department of Conservation (DOC) huts and campsites on New Zealand’s four most popular Great Walks as part of a trial starting in October.

The increased fee aims to help DOC maintain the tracks and control visitor numbers.

A price hike would affect tourists using the Milford, Kepler, Routeburn and Abel Tasman Coast tracks.

Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage said the nine Great Walks were premier tracks with spectacular scenery and were a “magnet for international visitors”.

“The seven-month trial from October 2018 to April 2019 will provide information on the effectiveness of pricing as a tool to manage visitor pressure,” Sage said.

“It is also part of setting and maintaining a fair pricing system for New Zealanders.”

The DOC’s investment in maintaining nine Great Walks exceeds the revenue made from users’ hut fees by up to $3.8 million each year.

“DOC expects to recover up to an additional $2.9 million during the trial period, without significantly reducing bookings and visitor demand,” Sage said.

The increased accommodation fees might also encourage overseas visitors to use less visited Great Walks where prices remain the same, she said.

Prices for huts for international visitors, including children, on the Milford Track will be $140 per night, on the Kepler and Routeburn $130 per night and Abel Tasman Coastal Walk $75 per night.

Hut prices for New Zealanders remain at $70 per night for the Milford, $65 per night for the Kepler and Routeburn, and $38 per night for the Abel Tasman Coastal Walk.

Retired GP receives QSM

John McGettigan was shocked when he found out he was a QSM recipient, but the award will come as no surprise to his former patients.

Known to generations of Methven residents simply as Dr John, the Methven grandad worked 40 years as a GP in the ski and farming town.

He said he was “very, very surprised” and overwhelmed when he learned he was to receive the Queen’s Service Medal for services to rural health.

“I didn’t think I was in that league,” he said.

McGettigan retired at the end of last year at the age of 69.

He began practicing as a GP in Methven in 1977, from a small surgery attached to the house he lived in on Forest Drive. From Lumsden originally, he had moved to the town with wife Mary from their base in Auckland, having been attracted by the benefits of working in a small community.

He was the sole GP, and was assisted by a receptionist who had first aid training, and a practice nurse who would work in the afternoons.

There were no x-ray facilities, and it was a far cry from the modern health hub which serves the town today, complete with several GPs, nurses and receptionists, as well as a dentist, osteopath, podiatrist, counsellors and other specialists.

“So it’s come a long way, and I guess the award is recognition of that,” McGettigan said.

Dr John was a driving force behind the establishment of the Methven Medical Centre, which opened at its purpose-built Ashburton District Council-owned build-

ing in the town centre in 1984.

About 10 years ago it was doubled in size, and McGettigan was grateful to fellow team member GP Gayle O’Duffy for her major contribution.

Development of the centre over the years was all about being part of a team, and he was proud to have helped make the facility what it was today.

“I accept this award, but I accept it as part of the team,” he said.

McGettigan recalled research prior to the medical centre’s construction. He and local councillors visited rural practices throughout Canterbury in order to develop an idea of how to build a modern facility.

“Methven is such a wonderful community, you just have to ask something and you will get it, the medical centre is a bit like that,” he said.

McGettigan has always been a proponent of rural health, and for many years accepted sixth year trainee doctors at the medical centre for ongoing education in general rural medicine.

Today, the Otago University Medical School uses the medical centre for trainee doctors to spend time in a recognised rural medical health hub.

McGettigan’s work in the town involved serving as an obstetrician and delivering many babies, and working closely with Mt Hutt’s medical facility in offering training and mentoring to staff and assisting in emergencies requiring minor surgery and trauma treatment.

He has earned a reputation locally for his special care to the elderly residents of Methven House, as a strong supporter of Methven St John, and working within the Catholic community for the schools and Parish Pastoral Council.

As a child, Matthew Hall fished the Rangitata River with his family. He caught herrings and began learning about the river.

As an adult, he fished for salmon and trout and began to notice once healthy rivers were in decline; in the decades since he has been one of this district’s strongest advocates for conserving and protecting our environment.

Hall now lives a stone’s throw from the Ashburton River, a special braided river important to Ashburton town but seriously overallocated for irrigation.

He is pleased today that water-take consents on the river are about to be reviewed and he hopes the water-users can think collectively about what they can do to keep the river flowing strongly all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

He has hope and believes the community, and country, is at a tipping point when it comes to taking care of the environment for future generations.

It helps too that there is a political will to just that.

Hall, keen fisherman and ecological observer, was an office holder in the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society, a group which became the Central South Island Fish and Game Council. He was national president for a time and is a current national councillor.

For 30 years he has studied the braided river systems of Mid and South Canterbury and remains a member of Save the Rivers Mid Canterbury. His expert evidence has helped shape conservation orders on both the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers.

For five years, he led the Ashburton Water Zone Committee, a community group with opposing water interests, acting to bring about the aims of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

Hall says the committee’s groundbreaking work was closely watched as communities around the country tackled the same issues of water quality and water quantity.

The plan for this district had 72 actions, among them nutrient limits for farmers in the Hinds Plains area. The work was challenging and when Hall retired from the committee in 2014 he planned to do a little more fishing.

Last year he organised and co-chaired the Salmon Symposium in Ashburton, which attracted national interest and international speakers.

PHOTO SUPPLIED Hall said he was proud to be made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, but even more proud because it brought conservation of the environment back to the fore.

“Conservation is important and 80 per cent of people are now saying the environment is important and there is a real increase in awareness.

“Politically there is also a different government in power and they seem to be recognising conservation and the environment issues are important, and it is critical to the way we take the country to the next generation.

“I think we are at tipping point and we could find there is little from the natural New Zealand, certainly on the Plains, left.”

He said five generations of his family had fished the Rangitata River, from their bach on the southern side, since 1924 and he had evolved from fishing to protecting the species as the river changed around him, along with the land either side of it.

Hall said the eyes of the country would remain on Mid Canterbury and while that might make some uncomfortable, it also meant the environment would remain centre stage.

Making a difference

When Ian Begbie opened the letter advising him he had received a Queen’s Birthday honour, his instinctive reaction was one of guilt.

“At first I didn’t think I should be getting one. There are people out there much more deserving than me,” he said.

But it’s that exact selflessness, also demonstrated throughout four decades of dedication to aviation in Ashburton, that saw him nominated to become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit late last year.

“And if there’s people out there that think I’m deserving, I’ll gladly accept it,” he said.

The locally born-and-raised Ashburton Engineering founder and manager has always been quick to unite his knack for mechanics and plan-making with his passion for flying.

As a founding member and now life member of the Ashburton Aviation Museum, he is responsible for all the engineering work on the museum’s first hangar, completed on a pro-bono basis, along with the design of a trailer to convey the museum’s 1950s Canberra Jet Cockpit section to remote displays.

It was simple, he explained – the museum was something in his field of interest and “they were just things that needed doing”.

Along the runway at the Mid Canterbury Aero Club, Begbie has also given many thousands of hours including constructing 115 hangar door sections.

He is described as a key driver of the improvement of the Ashburton Airfield facilities into a well-tended provincial airport with well-supported infrastructure.

“There’s always something to do on the aero club or the museum … and if I’m lucky and there’s some time left over, then maybe something at home as well,” he said.

In brief Trapped by seatbelt A boy who woke up and realised he was trapped in the car he was in thanks to his seatbelt resulted in a call-out for the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade yesterday afternoon. Firefighters were called to the Ashburton Police Station – where the driver of the car drove to after realising the boy was stuck – at about 2.30pm. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade station officer Murray Cairns said the boy – aged around 14 or 15 years – had fallen asleep in the car and when he woke up the seatbelt had gone behind him instead of in front of him and become tangled. It had tightened and locked. Firefighters dismantled the seat belt to free the boy before the car and its occupants continued on to their destination – Christchurch – but chances are they’ll remember their Sunday drive through Ashburton for a while to come.

Injured man dies One of two people injured in a two-car crash near Palmerston North yesterday has died. The sole occupants of each vehicle were taken to Palmerston North hospital in critical conditions. A 28-yearwoman has since died, police have confirmed. The crash happened on a one-way bridge on Turitea Road, Fitzherbert, about 9.15am.

The police serious crash unit is investigating.

But his service to aviation includes good deeds up in the air, as well.

In 2016, following the Kaikoura earthquake, Begbie helped create an air link to the cut-off town.

Providing emergency aid in the form of plane-loads of meat, vegetables, sanitary products and toiletries is a memorable experience for Begbie.

‘It was certainly a busy two weeks,” he said.

“We’d arrive at the airport and there was always quite a crowd waiting to pick up supplies … cars, busses, all parked along by

the airport, and some people just hanging around for a chance to get out of the place … we’d end up with full seats on the way back as well.”

When Begbie isn’t behind drawing up engineering plans or the controls of a Piper PA-28 Cherokee, he can also be found zipping around Mid Canterbury atop motorcycles.

He was president of the Ashburton Motorcycle Club from 1968 to 1993 and is now a life member.

He was also an instructor for motorcycle learners in the 1970s

and spent 20 years with the Templeton Speedway riding solos and sidecars, holding a few records in his time.

And nowadays, Begbie isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.

Next on the cards is a major undertaking at the Ashburton airport, to rebuild and restore a World t War Two Kittyhawk hangar.

“There’s going to be quite a lot of work involved, and we’re still looking for volunteers and money, but I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

A man is in a critical condition with head injuries after a jetboat crash on Saturday. A privately owned jetboat crashed into a riverbank while travelling on the Waikato River about 12.30pm. A police spokesperson said the incident happened near Te Awa Lane in Tamahere, south of Hamilton. The man was taken by ambulance to Waikato Hospital.

Man critical after crash A farm worker critically injured after crashing a quad bike near Hinds on Friday night may have been lying on the ground injured for some time before he was found.

The man aged in his 30s was believed to have been riding the quad bike down Liddles Road – a shingle road nor far out of Hinds - on his way home from work when he crashed.

Roger Sparks from the Hinds volunteer rural fire force said a passing motorist found him and raised the alarm at around 7.30pm.

“He was on the ground for a good 20 minutes or half an hour before anyone found him,” Sparks said.

Firefighters from the Hinds unit and the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade raced to the

scene to provide first-aid until St John Ambulance arrived.

The man was then airlifted to Christchurch Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a critical condition.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokesperson said yesterday the man remained in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital, but was stable.

There were no other vehicles

involved in the crash and it was unclear why the man fell from the bike.

A police spokesperson said it was unclear whether the man had been hit, or if he had a medical event, or if he lost control.

A serious crash unit investigation was under way and once that was completed they’d be able to establish what had happened, the spokesperson said.

Heavy rain brings flooding to Auckland A person was paddling down the street in a rowboat and others trapped in vehicles as heavy rain brought flooding across the Auckland region.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Auckland as floods hit areas such as Warkworth and Dome Valley.

In Wellsford, police were called to reports of a Holden ute that had driven into floodwaters just after 1pm with two people trapped inside.

“Members of the public rescued the man, his child and a dog from inside the vehicle,” a police spokeswoman said.

In Pakuranga, streets turned into streams and a man was seen out on his rowboat on Studfall Street.

As surface flooding, slips and heavy rain hit the Coromandel, motorists are being asked to follow directions of emergency services and roading contractors.

Some local roads have been closed due to flooding.

“Police are not aware of anyone being injured in weather-related events at this stage,” the spokeswoman said.

“However we continue to monitor the situation and work with our emergency service partners.”

Drivers are also urged to take extra care and delay any non-essential travel.

Strong support for ‘Third Strikes’ law Third-strike offenders have an average of 63 criminal convictions and 68 per cent of Kiwis approve of a new hardline policy, according to a new survey.

Under the “Third Strikes” law, a person who has three warnings for serious violent, sexual or drugs offending can be sentenced to the maximum jail time without parole.

Justice Minister Andrew Little will take the controversial law, introduced in 2010, to the Cabinet next week to soften it, but a new survey has found the majority of New Zealanders support the law as it is.

The Sensible Sentencing Trust commissioned poll of 965 adults found 68 per cent approved of the law, and 20 per cent did not. The rest were unsure or refused to an-

swer. National party supporters most approved of the law (78 per cent) followed by New Zealand First (66 per cent) Labour (63 per cent) and Green (48 per cent).

Sensible Sentencing Trust founder Garth McVicar said he did not expect the strong level of support for the law among Labour voters.

“Public safety has always been important to the New Zealand public, and this poll confirms support for Three Strikes is strong at 68 per cent overall support.

“Justice Minister Andrew Little’s wholly ideological desire to repeal three strikes runs counter to not only the views of the general public, but a substantial proportion of his own party’s voters,” McVicar said.

“He risks blood on his hands

when the inevitable re-offending by second and third-striker career criminals are back on the streets.”

McVicar said the poll showed respondents had even greater support for three strikes when key data about the risk profile and criminal convictions records of the second and third-strike offenders was explained.

Second and third strikers made up only 1.35 per cent of the prison population, McVicar said – about 140 of the most serious violent or sexual offenders.

“These are some of the most prison-worthy offenders. If Andrew Little wants to free up prison space, it won’t be achieved by repealing Three Strikes and letting out some of the highest risk offenders in New Zealand.”

Third strikers had an average of 63 convictions by the time they progressed to the point, and second strikers had an average of 26.

McVicar said 88 per cent of second strikers were assessed as high risk of reoffending and 51 per cent of them committed their second strike while on bail, parole or subject to a sentence.

Home invasion and burglary were offences committed by 61 per cent of offenders on their final warning, or second strike.

At April 2018 there were 9632 people with a first strike, 273 on a second strike and four third strikers. Only three people have been sentenced under “three strikes” and in all three cases the judges opted not to hand down the maximum sentence for the third strike.

Barrett downplays police call-out All Blacks back Jordie Barrett says an innocent mistake led to police being called when he ended up in strangers’ house in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Hurricanes star Barrett became the subject of front page headlines in New Zealand when it was revealed he and a male friend were found eating takeaways in a Dunedin flat at 5am.

The occupants of the flat, two women, contacted police who questioned the two men before taking no further action.

The incident came in the aftermath of the visiting Hurricanes’ Super Rugby loss to the Highlanders on Friday night.

Barrett told journalists yesterday the two men thought the flat belonged to a friend so walked through an unlocked door.

“I can’t say I’m embarrassed by what’s happened, I’m just disappointed with the events that have unfolded,” Barrett said.

“I don’t believe I’ve caused any harm to anyone, haven’t spoken to anyone, basically it was a human error, walked into the wrong flat and we left.”

Barrett denied being intoxicated, explaining he had enjoyed a couple of drinks and had a clear recollection of the entire night.

He assumed the police were contacted because the women had heard a noise in their house.

By that stage, the men had realised their mistake and had already left.

“They (police) came and questioned us, asked a few questions and then we were released and then went back to the hotel.”

The incident came a week out from the start of the three-Test series between the All Blacks and France.

Annabel Langbein says she’s honoured and excited to see the value of home cooking and writing about food recognised at the highest level.

As of today Langbein is an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to food writing. Langbein was made an ONZM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list announced this morning.

“For me, in a way it’s an acknowledgement of how important food is in our society,” she said. “It’s really exciting.”

The best-selling author of 25 cookbooks and the host of three seasons of Annabel Langbein: The Free Range Cook on television, Langbein has been talking and writing about food and its central role in our lives since 1988.

Thirty years later, she still thinks home cooking made from fresh ingredients is key for happy, healthy lives and relationships.

“I’ve always believed food’s this incredible connector. It connects us to nature, and the world around us, and to our own community and culture, and other cultures.

“When you cook it’s a very simple way to build a good life.”

In 1991, Langbein established the Culinary Institute of New Zealand, a specialist foodmarketing consultancy, and promoted New Zealand food overseas as an ambassador for Trade New Zealand.

She believes being made an ONZM for food writing is a sign of the times – a reflection of the fact more of us are realising the importance of home cooking not only for our physical nourishment but for spiritual wellbeing and fostering social connections.

“It’s a big honour,” she said.

“This has been my career, to try and help excite and educate people and share the thing I’ve always found so potent in my own life.

“I have a big rally against this industrial food chain that’s taking over our lives and I want to show people it’s easy to cook.

“It doesn’t need to be time-consuming or cost a lot of money and you can actually get a lot of pleasure out of it.”

The Queen’s Birthday Honours list is kept so hush hush Langbein hadn’t told her husband, Ted Hewetson, about her inclusion before it was officially announced today.

She thought both he and the couple’s two children, who are in their mid-20s and live overseas, would be very proud of her.

“We’re a really tight family. It’s a really special thing actually.”

Langbein hoped to spend today celebrating by “cooking up a storm” at home – after so many years cooking professionally she still loves the process.

Langbein is also a much-loved food columnist.

She currently has a weekly spot in Canvas magazine – published each Saturday in the Weekend Herald – where she writes about food and shares recipes.

In 1988 she self-published her first book of recipes, Annabel Langbein’s Cookbook, and has since become one of New Zealand’s highest-selling authors.

Her 1997 book The Best of Annabel Langbein has sold more than half a million copies internationally and her books have topped New Zealand best-seller lists.

Overall she has sold more than two million books through her self-publishing imprint Annabel Langbein Media.

Langbein was a director of Kapiti Cheeses for seven years and is a member of the Sustainability Council of New Zealand.

She holds a Lincoln University Honorary Doctorate in Commerce, awarded in 2017, and received the Kea World Class New Zealand Award in 2013.

The Kea Awards recognise “world-leading Kiwis” who help define our national image overseas.

The New Zealand Order of Merit was instituted by Royal Warrant in May 1996.

The Order is awarded to those “who in any field of endeavour have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and the nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions, or other merits”.

Enjoy a brass music treat

For many Mid Cantabrians, the word Nor’West is a sure reference to summertime wind.

However, it’s not wind, but wind instruments which will be whipping into Ashburton this Saturday when Nor’West Brass delivers a concert.

From the mellow tones of the flugelhorn to the chirps of the trumpet, the group are set to bring a full feast of bold, brassy ear indulgence to the Sinclair

Centre. As a top competitor in the Canterbury Provincial brass band competition, and a popular guest performance for Ashburton Musical Club last year, the North-West Christchurch-based group are not without a name for themselves in Mid Canterbury.

Ashburton Musical Club spokesperson Janice Allen said “they are an excellent group of brass players of all ages and particularly encourage young players”.

Since launching in 2014, they

have gone from strength to strength – partaking in 18 such events in 2015 and regularly participating in local competitions and aiming to sharing their music with the local community.

Nor’West Brass boast a wealth of expert knowledge including national champions, national bandsmen and players who have been involved in some of the top bands in NZ and the UK. And in September last year, the group won their grade at the Canterbury provincial contest –

a “great achievement for a new band”.

But it’s not all about the competitions – with the group looking forward to sharing their craft in their next appearance in Ashburton.

The concert will begin at 2pm this Sunday in the Sinclair Centre.

Admission at the door is $20 for the general public, $10 for Ashburton Musical Club members and free for students, and includes afternoon tea.

Vying for Rockquest honours

Sixty-six bands will face off next weekend as New Zealand’s biggest youth music event gets under way in Canterbury.

The Smokefree Rockquest Canterbury heats are set to kick off on Saturday at St Margaret’s College, Christchurch, for the 30th year since the competition was founded.

Bands will be vying for a place at a regional competition, and with the dream of winning national prize packages including awards, $22,000 in Rockshop

vouchers, $16,000 NZ On Air recording, a video and promo package, a photo shoot and branding package from Imaginary Friends.

Smokefree Rockquest has this year received a record 859 entries around the country and around 2800 young people will go through regional heats and finals in 24 towns from Invercargill to Whangarei as they compete in Smokefreerockquest and Smokefree Tangata Beats, which showcases Pacifica and Maori culture in a contemporary music setting.

years there has been tremendous support from schools, who value the framework the events create for their students to strive for success, express themselves and gain NCEA credits.

“This is often mentioned as the motivator that keeps kids engaged in the school system.

Teachers can see the benefits that being in a band brings – kids learn to co-operate, to negotiate around their differences, to express their thoughts and emotions in words, to front up on time, to promote themselves and their ideals.”

Terror risk high year after London attack Roseanne Barr A year since three jihadists unleashed carnage on London Bridge, a senior counter-terror officer has warned that attack plots are being thwarted “all the time”.

The attacks on the bridge and Borough Market killed eight and wounded almost 50 people on June 3 last year.

Among them were two Australians: Sara Zelenak, 21, from Brisbane who was working as an au pair and Kirsty Boden, 28, from Loxton in South Australia, a staff nurse who ran towards the danger to help the victims.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon at the weekend urged the public to remain watchful as the UK threat level remains at severe, meaning an attack is highly likely.

Haydon, the senior national coordinator for counter-terror policing, told Sky News: “I’d encourage all members of the public to remain vigilant.

“The police and security services are working extremely hard, foiling and disrupting terrorist attacks all the time.

“It (the terror threat level) has gone to critical on two occasions,

on the back of the Manchester and Parsons Green attacks, but we’re currently at severe, which means an attack is highly likely.”

British spies have disrupted terror plots at a rate of roughly one per month over the past year, MI5 head Andrew Parker said recently.

US put on notice over tariffs The United States has been singled out by some of its closest allies over the imposition of tariffs that they warn will undermine open trade and weaken confidence in the global economy. The dispute over US president Donald Trump’s new levies on steel and aluminium imports is driving a wedge in the G7 group of industrial nations.

Following yesterday’s conclusion of a three-day meeting of G7 finance ministers, Canadian finance minister Bill Morneau issued a summary saying the other six members want Trump to hear their message of “concern and disappointment” over the US trade actions.

Allies including Canada and the European Union are threatening retaliatory tariffs.

The G7 ministers urged US Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin to deliver their message before leaders of the group’s member countries meet next week in Quebec.

Ministers urged the US to abandon the tariffs ahead of the leaders’ summit before the move causes deeper divisions within the G7.

“The international community is faced with significant economic and security issues, which are best addressed through a united front from G7 countries,” said the summary, which was agreed to by the attending ministers. “Members continue to make progress on behalf of our citizens, but recognise that this collaboration and co-operation has been put at risk by trade actions against other members,” it added.

Bruno Le Maire, France’s finance and economy minister, was blunt in his assessment of the Whistler meeting, where ministers confronted Mnuchin.

“It has been a tense and tough G7 - I would say it’s been far more a G6 plus one than a G7,” said Le Maire, who called the tariffs unjustified.

The annual honours are a perfect opportunity each year to recognise the involvement and dedication of individuals in their chosen field and everyone who’s name appears on the list printed in today’s edition of the Guardian is a worthy recipient.

They are for those who chip away quietly in the background, unassuming in their chosen roles.

They don’t often seek gratification for their work, but more are just happy to be in the community doing it.

Many feel they are overdone.

That such a list of people is somewhat of an overkill – but you

know what? Bugger them.

If we can’t find an appropriate measure in which to applaud the people who make such a significant impact in our community and lives, then what’s the point?

I’ve read some absolute drivel from respected persons in our country who see fit to belittle the prestige of the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

They see them as a waste of time, an over-glorification of

people doing what they do for a living.

There is, as there always is, a few that raise the eyebrow.

The constant presence of often retired politicians and sporting stars can seem a little unwarranted in some cases.

But when you get down the list, to the lower classed medals, if you can even call them that, the real sense of impact at the grassroots level is evident and that’s where we should take the most pride.

Our local recipients this year fit that bill perfectly.

Yes, the Topp Twins are an internationally renowned entertainment masterpiece, but the work they do isn’t always just about selling tickets to shows.

I’ve been witness to them at small community fundraisers,

getting behind the good charity work people are doing and offering their services and skills to organisations that probably would never have dreamed of having such a high profile act as part of their event.

And they have done it without any fuss.

Whether they are there as themselves, or as one of their various alter egos, they’ve seemed more than happy to be part of something that beats at the very heart of the community.

And so the acknowledgement bestowed upon them today is perfectly fitting.

Likewise, Matthew Hall, Ian Begbie and John McGettigan.

Three individuals who have given a fair chunk of their lives to doing significant work in our

district and doing it for the betterment of the people who they share the ground we walk on with.

So ignore some of the negative undertones you will hear huffed and puffed from some corners today and celebrate the achievements of those who have been honoured.

There are hundreds of people around the Ashburton District who would be worthy recipients of such honours, but sadly not everyone of them will be recognised, so we need to make the most of what we have got.

And who knows, this time next year we may see even more Mid Canterbury names being shone up in the bright lights of the media after being recognised.

They too will just as deserving.

Some answers, more questions on bovis T

he decision to push ahead with culling herds affected by mycoplasma bovis is heart-breaking. For the farmers affected, for their families, and for our community.

Until a few weeks ago I was a strong proponent of culling. My view had been that if eradication could reasonably be achieved, we should do so.

A half billion dollar price tag, and 22,000 stock culled, while a significant cost, was a better prospect than higher ongoing costs in managing mycoplasma bovis and increased on-farm biosecurity.

At the time about 30 properties were confirmed as infected, with the potential spread unknown but believed to be limited.

That changed on May 10, when the Ministry for Primary Industries appeared in Parliament to provide an update.

Their new projections were a huge wake-up call.

Based on proximity to infected farms, stock movements, or supply of milk for animal feed, there were 1700 properties of interest.

nounced that same day they would re-evaluate their decision to continue culling, and look at whether long-term management would be a better option.

Their decision to continue culling was the backdrop for the meeting on Wednesday night.

Eight hundred people is a massive crowd for a meeting in Ashburton, but anyone expecting all the answers on mycoplasma bovis was always going to be disappointed.

The questions were reasonable, and the minister and his officials pretty open about what they did know and didn’t know.

Where’s it come from? We don’t know, but it’s a single strain most commonly found in Europe and the United States.

How did it get here? We’re working on finding the source but it won’t be quick.

Are individual stock routinely tested once they’re slaughtered?

No. And the important question to Damien O’Connor: At what point would the Government move from eradication to management if the spread continues?

Answer: Not willing to give an answer at this point.

The last question is a critical one.

Now that the Government have made the decision to continue culling in the hope of eradication I’ll back the work needed to get there.

If we’re going to have any hope of achieving what no country has done before then it’s going to take the support of everyone.

But it’s a reasonable question to ask, once that allocated billion dollars has been spent, if another 126,000 stock are culled and we’re still no closer, at what point do we accept that the disease should be moved to long-term management?

Until that point I’ll continue to push the minister on fast and fair compensation.

It’s a requirement under the Biosecurity Act that farmers

should be no worse off, and I’m working hard to ensure the Government don’t shirk their responsibilities.

Recently in Parliament I asked the minister about making interim payments.

Some farmers have been without an income since January and the withholding of payments until stock had been removed was pushing a number of them to the brink.

I’m pleased that Damien O’Connor has listened and MPI will now start processing interim payments.

I’ve been working with local farmers affected by mycoplasma bovis since December.

Ashburton’s a perfect fit My name is Esther Avnit and I am 18 months in New Zealand and counting.

About three years ago my hubby and I decided we wanted to look for a better place to live in.

We were both working fulltime, which in Israel meant we barely saw our kids. Living in the town of Ashkelon meant living in a war zone every few years.

We were looking for a place in which we could have a better balance between work and family.

New Zealand was one of the first places we thought about and it took us over a year to gather everything needed to get the visa.

As a GP I got quite a few offers and I remember sitting with the map considering all of the options. We chose Ashburton and I believe it is one of the best decisions we made, the weather is quite nice (the first year was about getting used to frosts in the mornings), the mountains, the rivers, the snow are breathtaking and the best thing is that Ashburton is home to the most kind and welcoming people.

Working as a GP in Israel is very different from working as one here. The health system in Israel is public (fully subsidised by the government), which means the workload on the doctor is much heavier.

Every patient gets only five to 10 minutes, which actually means that the GP has barely enough time to see the patients and listen to them.

I like the way it is done here, where the GP invites the patients into her room and can dedicate enough time to each

patient. I enjoy getting to know my patients and their families.

I think that a GP needs to be insistent regarding primary prevention (searching for and preventing diseases before they manifest).

Leaving Israel was very hard since it meant leaving elderly parents and all our friends behind. We came to an Englishspeaking country with two kids who did not know a word of English – the support and the love they received here cannot be expressed with words.

Adam is in Allenton School which he loves going to, Rom goes to Child’s Play which has an amazing team, Adi (my husband) loves his job and I am working at the Tinwald Medical Centre. The team there has become a second family to me.

I was worried about making new friends (not an easy task when you are over 40) but we found some amazing people, some of them I am proud to call my friends.

When we came here, we became familiar with the Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network through which we found some of our friends.

It is not easy seeing all my childhood friends growing further apart, it is not easy being called with an emergency from back home when you are over 24 hours’ flight away and it was not easy to study the Kiwi medical system and programmes which are quite different than Israeli ones.

However, 18 months down the track we have many friends, the kids are settled in and we purchased our first house (A huge challenge in itself ).

We are here to stay.

The Ashburton Indian Multicultural Charitable Trust celebrated the holiday of Ramayan Paat this month.

They read a section of the epic Ramayan, an ancient Indian epic poem which narrates the life of the divine prince Rama, the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu and a major deity of Hinduism.

He is sent to exile and later has

to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana. The Ramayana is one of the largest ancient epics in world literature.

It consists of nearly 24,000 verses (mostly set in the Shloka meter), divided into seven Kandas (books) and about 500 sargas (chapters), so only a part is read.

The poem is not seen as just a literary monument, but serves as an integral part of Hinduism and is held in such reverence that the

mere reading or hearing of it or certain passages of it, is believed

by Hindus to free them from sin and bless the reader or listener.

The reading was done in part by speakers, and in a large part as songs accompanied by traditional instruments such as the harmonium (pump organ) and was followed by a shared pot-luck dinner.

Around 40 people participated, including guests from Christchurch.

Off with the theory and on with the practical

By Wendy HeWitt The first group of participants are now nearing the end of the road code theory lessons and are looking forward to sitting their learners’ licence test in early June.

The ladies are gaining great results on their practice tests and are looking forward to moving on to the practical side of the programme and working toward their restricted licences.

Classes have become a highlight of the week with the opportunity for social interaction while learning. It is lovely to see friendships developing and we can already see that the goal of addressing isolation in rural communities is achievable simply by assisting people into a New Zealand driver’s licence.

Tutor Gayle McCluskey at the Ashburton Learning Centre has

done a great job of teaching the road code while providing a friendly and supportive environment.

As we move on to the next phase of the programme, we are looking for volunteer driving mentors to supervise the ladies’ driving lessons.

The driving mentors have to be over 25 years old and have held a full New Zealand driving licence for at least two years. The driving lessons will take place in the students own vehicles.

If you are interested in volunteering as a driving mentor, we would love to hear from you. We are particularly looking for mentors in the Mayfield, Hinds and Dorie areas.

The independence gained by being able to drive is huge and being part of that process is very rewarding for our mentors.

It is such a great opportunity to make a difference to the lives of newcomer and migrant families in the district while meeting people from other cultures.

We are also taking applications for our next intake of beginners which will be later in July.

The importance of Ram Navami

BY BIKASH SUKUL Ram Navmi is celebrated on the ninth day of Shukla Paksha (or bright phase of the lunar fortnight) in the month of Chaitra (mid-March) of the Hindu or Lunar calendar.

On Ram Navami celebration, people come together to celebrate harmony and peace.

Ram Navami is the festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Rama.

It is celebrated to mark the descent of Lord Vishnu in the avatar of Lord Ram, who was born in the Kingdom of Ayodhya to Queen Kausalya and King Dasharatha, in the Treta Yuga.

Ayodhya was the capital of the Kingdom of Kosala in Avadha.

Mention of Lord Ram is not only found in ancient Hindu texts, but also in texts of Jainism and Buddhism.

Lord Ram is the central figure of the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana – a text that not only has significance in India, but in cultures throughout South and South-east Asia.

In Ashburton, we celebrated Ram Navami at the Seniors Centre on March 24 which was attended by about 80 people.

People came from Christchurch, Methven and the surrounding areas in Ashburton.

We had groups from Nepal, India and Fijian Indians who brought a plate to share and the Ashburton Indian Multicultural Charitable Trust (AIMCT)provided food for everyone.

A religious group from Christchurch joined us and recited the story of Lord Rama’s birth from the Ramayana.

Everyone took part in the prayer which was followed by bhajans and kirtans from the locals.

Prasad and dinner was served to everyone before they returned home.

The AIMCT organises a monthly cultural gathering at the Sen-

iors Centre which is attended by the locals.

We also have our annual event, Diwali, on October 27, which will be held at the Ashburton Trust

Event Centre.

The tickets for Diwali are on sale at the event centre and can also be purchased through their website.

Philippines ambassador visits Ashburton

BY ADI AVNIT Last month Ashburton was fortunate to host the Philippines consulate staff at the i-Site building for five days.

The staff worked almost around the clock (spotted providing services at 2am on Sunday morning) to help the local Filipino community with consular services (instead of requiring them to go to Wellington). I think that’s an admirable idea and wish the consular teams for different countries would follow their example.

I have had the pleasure of meeting ambassador Jesus S. Domingo and found him to be a charming and easygoing person.

Ambassador Domingo sees the next generation Filipinos growing up in New Zealand as the future and is promoting the concept of youth ambassadors, an initiative aimed at developing the next generation of FilipinoKiwi leaders, from among Filipino high school students in NZ. He participated in the Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) festival, organised by Filipino Dairy Workers in New Zealand Inc (FDWNZ), while in Ashburton at the Methodist Church hall.

The festival was on for two days and opened with an exhibition about the Philippines, covering famous people, history, tourism spots, traditional clothing and festivals. The conclusion

and main event of the festival was Santacruzan, a ritual pageant featuring “queens”, each representing a different Biblical or symbolical figure and dressed in a different gorgeous gown.

The pageant was followed by FDWNZ chairman Dr Earl Magtiday performing a romantic ballad and dancers performing traditional dances.

A surprise turn of the event was when local dignitaries such as Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel and MP Andrew Falloon were invited on stage to try their hand (and feet) in the Tinikling (bamboo) dance.

There was a great turn-out and I hope FDWNZ will organise it again next year.

Now that the winter months are closing in Kiwi English participants are meeting mainly in the classroom.

As most of our students are chefs, we are going through the menus from Charming Thai and Myabi restaurants, and working on pronunciation.

We have discovered that the English language has a lot of different mouth movements like back-of-throat sounds as in G in give and rolling Rs in river and out-the-teeth sounds of Th and top-teeth-on-bottom-lip sounds of F in fish and so on.

Try saying “Ashburton is between the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers” when you can’t say your Rs too well.

We like to keep the content relevant and conversational and anyone is welcome.

Flashpacking in Scotland

T

here’s a funny thing about the Moot Hill at Scone.

This ancient ridge – which Scottish kings ascended to be crowned on the Stone of Destiny – isn’t natural.

Rather, the stately hillock was created by nobles dropping fistfuls of soil from home, before kneeling in it to bend their will – and their lands – to the new king.

As the list of monarchs grew, so did the hill.

As such, Moot Hill – the scene of so many beginnings – feels an apt place to start dishing the dirt on our own Scottish journey.

Like the coronations of old, participants have travelled from far and wide to stand on Moot Hill today. But instead of a knot of muddy-kneed nobles, they’re a group of well-dressed professionals from places like Philadelphia and New Orleans, London and Munich.

And in lieu of the dirty business of kingmaking, they’re here to bend their will to a decidedly more fun pursuit: Flashpacking.

Best described as group ad-

venture travel for those who’ve outgrown the grubby trappings of backpacking – but not the intrepid, fun mentality behind it – flashpacking is named after the innovative London travel company driving the trend – the Flash Pack. With more and more people settling down in their 30s and 40s now, they’ve got a captive – and growing – market.

“I’ve been looking for a holiday like this for ages,” says 35-yearold Andrea from Munich, as we descend Moot Hill towards spectacular Scone Palace.

“In my experience, group travel means people in their early twenties too drunk to talk properly, or pensioners too old to walk properly. Where’s the middle ground?”

That middle ground is precisely where we find ourselves, in the courtyard at Scone Palace, surrounded by a fleet of MINI Countryman cars. This is the Flash Pack’s latest holiday: An adventure-packed road trip through the Scottish Highlands, played out over a long weekend.

After becoming acquainted with our fellow flashpackers – there are 12 of us in total – we’re

shuffled into pairs and threes and helped to programme our sat navs. Then we’re off, accelerating into the sumptuous countryside that contributed to Scotland being named the most beautiful country in the world by Rough Guides.

Part of the success of this trip is that the driving itself becomes part of the fun, rather than simply a means to an end. Especially with Top Gear-style walkie-talkies in every glove compartment, ensuring the cars are in constant contact with each other and the Flash Pack’s co-founder Lee Thompson, bringing up the rear.

Our first destination is the Bridge of Orchy, spanning a picturesque gorge south of Loch Tulla. But we’re not here to admire the view from the bridge – we’re here to jump off it.

“Bridge swinging” is basically bungee jumping for beginners.

Fully harnessed, we crawl out onto the side of the bridge before letting go and swinging into the 10-metre chasm between road and river. It’s a great deal of fun – and very wet.

It’s also an excellent bonding

experience, as we cajole, applaud and photograph each other.

Those few moments in the air completely reset my perspective, from an uptight city dweller in a group of strangers, to part of a road gang – with its own embryonic in-jokes.

Activities like this are key to flashpacking’s central pillars; adventure, adrenaline and luxury.

It’s a composite that continues in style that evening around a roaring campfire at the foot of Ben Nevis.

Here, we’re served a mouthwatering dinner by a personal chef, before retiring to a cluster of cosy yurts and boutique log cabins for the night.

The rest of the weekend follows a similar pattern; physical challenges (add sea- kayaking and zip-lining), magnificent castles (add Ardverikie and Fonab – where we stay on the final night), incredible food (plus a whisky and chocolate tasting at Dalwhinnie, the UK’s highest distillery) and some frankly phenomenal driving through magnificent Highland scenery.

The Countryman is nippy and

fun on these wild, empty roads and predictably, everybody wants to drive, but we grudgingly take it in turns. One of our best finds, late on day one, is that the MINIs come pre-programmed with 100 Road Trip Tracks.

Imagine Bon Jovi at top volume with the windows wound down as we screech past a herd of startled-looking Highland cattle.

By Sunday afternoon, to be honest, we’re all rather upset to be handing back our car keys.

“This is like the Borrow My Doggy of road trips,” jokes Andrea. “We run about with them all weekend, then get to hand the goods back all muddy and smelly afterwards.”

QUICK RECIPE

Courgette and bacon carbonara 4 eggs 500g pasta of your choice 2 T olive oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic 4 slices bacon or pancetta, sliced courgettes sliced on an angle 100g parmesan cheese, grated finely 100ml cream 1 C fresh herb leaves (e.g. basil, thyme, parsley) Freshly ground salt to taste Freshly ground pepper to taste ■ In a large pot of salted boiling water cook pasta per the packet instructions.

■ In a large frying pan heat the oil and add the onion, garlic and bacon (or pancetta) to cook for 4 or 5 minutes until slightly coloured.

■ Add the courgettes and cook for a further 2 or 3 minutes.

■ In a small bowl, beat the eggs

with a fork lightly and add the parmesan cheese, cream and herbs. Add plenty of freshly ground pepper and salt to taste.

■ Drain the pasta, and add to the onion mix. Toss through.

■ Turn off the heat, and add the

egg mixture to the pan. Stir until well combined.

■ Serve straight from the pan with a little extra parmesan on top, and freshly ground pepper.

In brief Cleary comes of age He’s had the shortest State of Origin preparation for a NSW halfback since Andrew Johns in 2005, but the man who knows Nathan Cleary best has seen enough to know he’ll fire. Eight straight for MCU

Mid Canterbury United look like they’re unstoppable in this year’s Mainland Football division two competition.

Their latest win, 4-2 over FC Twenty 11 Bombers at Burnside Park on Saturday, was their eighth on the trot this season.

Unbeaten, they were nine points clear of their nearest rivals, Western AFC Roar – who had won five and lost four so far in 2018 – and their goal differential was on a completely different level to any other team.

So far this season Mid Canterbury United had scored 45 goals and only had five scored against them.

Burnside Park knowing it wasn’t going to be easy though.

Coach Marty Fitzgerald said a less than adequate pitch made it tough for both teams to play an attractive style of football.

It was FC Twenty who struck first, electing to knock the ball long and try and win it back in the air using their taller players working well for them, with Keith Grovner finishing off the move.

But Mid Canterbury showed grit playing their own brand of football and sticking to their passing game, with Luke Martin coming off the bench to tie the game up 1-all.

Mid Canterbury then found their form, with slick play through the midfield allowing Luciano Drudi to elude the de-

fensive back three for large periods and finally linking with Jordan Lugg to finish off a wellplaced pass into the net.

Leading 2-1 at half time, Mid Canterbury extended that to 3-1 early in the second half, before Grovner got another one back for FC Twenty.

Niall Young, playing at left wing, put in a strong performance and made a solid individual run, but his shot was saved by the keeper. Mid Canterbury rallied though and Lugg – to finish off a man of the match performance – found the net with eight minutes to play, putting the game out of FC Twenty’s reach.

Saturday’s win was the start of a busy weekend for Mid Canterbury United with a game against

the Burnham FC Bobcats also scheduled for this afternoon to finish off the first round, while next weekend they’ll be home again to FC Twenty 11 Mavericks.

Meanwhile in the men’s division four competition the Methven FC Senior As continued to lead the way.

The top-of-the-table side’s latest win was a big one, 9-0 over Coastal Spirit Pressie A in Methven on Saturday.

In the youth grades Mid Canterbury’s 17th grade side drew 2-all with Christchurch United Under-17 in the 17th grade division one competition, while in the 15th grade division three competition Mid Canterbury’s 15th grade side beat Shirley Boys’ High School Under-15 3-0.

Cooper powers to stage win in Korea Kiwi cyclist Joseph Cooper has added another stage win to his resume after a superb solo attack saw him take stage four of the Tour de Korea.

Cooper has become adept at hunting stages in Asia recently,

having claimed two stages at the Tour of China and one at the Tour of Hainan last year, and the 32-year-old bagged another in impressive fashion in Korea.

With just under 100 kilometres to go, Cooper got himself in a sev-

en-man breakaway, which built a handy four minute lead over the peloton. They worked together until 35 kilometres remaining, where Cooper picked up the pace on the stage’s only categorised climb. The weaker riders fell away

until the top of the climb only one – Sanghong Park – remained glued to Cooper’s wheel.

With 31 kilometres to go, Cooper set off on his daring solo mission, attacking Park and going clear.

Former World Cup-winning captain Nathan Cayless has joined the Kiwis coaching staff as an assistant. Head coach Michael Maguire confirmed Cayless would join Australian Ben Gardiner as his two assistants for the rugby league test against England in Denver on June 23. Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft wanted two things from his side heading into Saturday’s Combined Country Cup quarter-finals – a good start and a win.

He got both.

Rakaia booked themselves a spot in the Canterbury country rugby competition’s semi-finals with a 29-10 win over Saracens at the Rakaia Domain, after leading from start to finish.

Saracens barely saw any ball in the first 10 minutes, Rakaia dominating and getting on the board with a try to Logan Flett and a conversion and a penalty to Tom Hanham-Carter.

After having to come from behind to win their last two matches, it was a start that had to put a smile on Foxcroft’s face, as the early attacking flair was matched by top notch defence on the odd occasion Saracens did get their hands on the ball in the early stages.

Waratahs captain Michael Hooper admits there was probably one man who didn’t enjoy watching his side’s 15-try epic against Queensland on Saturday. Fifteen Wallabies hopefuls featured at Suncorp as the Waratahs prevailed 51-42, with Super Rugby now on the backburner ahead of a three-test series against Ireland. Hooper said he was proud of how effective his side’s attack had been but equally impressed by the young Reds’ creativity. “They managed some offloads that had me looking around going ‘how did they get that away’,” the flanker said. But he said Australia’s defensive coach Nathan Grey may not have been quite so thrilled with what he saw.

But Saracens were in the quarter-finals for a reason – they’re no slouches and they weren’t going to lie down.

It took 30 minutes, but they finally started making inroads and were rewarded with a penalty just before the break to make it 10-3 at half time.

Rakaia made the perfect start to the second half though, with Seta Koroitamana marking his comeback from injury with a try to send his side out to 17-3.

Saracens managed to keep in touch with a try of their own before being reduced to 14 when their number eight was sent to the sin bin for a nasty tackle on Tom Hanham-Carter, and Rakaia made them pay quickly with Timoci Nabakeke breaking through the defence to score and put the home side out to 2210.

Rakaia were also reduced to 14 men for the final 10 minutes, with a man sent to the bin after a scuffle broke out, but despite

being a man down Rakaia still managed to extend their winning margin with a further try to Koroitamana.

A bad day for Saracens became worse too, when the final whistle was blown a minute early after one of their players suffered a broken ankle which required a stretcher and an ambulance.

Foxcroft said it was good to get the win and secure their spot in the semi-finals as they looked to redeem themselves after losing to Southbridge in the competition’s final last year.

But it was still a case of one game at a time.

Rakaia would play competition newcomers Springston in this weekend’s semi-finals, a side that they’ve already beaten once this year, but they’re not taking them lightly, Foxcroft said.

Springston secured their spot in the semis with a win over defending champions Southbridge in their quarter-final on Saturday, while the other semi-

final would be played between Waihora and Prebbleton.

Waihora beat Darfield 21-14 in extra time in their quarter-final, while Prebbleton beat Lincoln 38-15.

While Rakaia were the only Mid Canterbury team to make the finals, the union’s other sides were all still in action on Saturday.

In the Canterbury Rugby Supporters Club Trophy section, Southern edged out Celtic 15-12, while Glenmark beat Kaiapoi 1817.

Methven were big winners in the plate section, downing Ohoka 41-18, while Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell beat Oxford 26-22 in the other plate match.

West Melton produced the biggest win in the plaque section, beating Hornby 45-12, while Ashley just beat Hurunui 14-13, and Hampstead fell just short of their first win of the season against Rolleston, going down 14-11.

It might have taken more than 1000 days but it has ben worth the wait for the Melbourne Rebels, stopping the Blues 20-10 in Auckland to keep their Super Rugby finals hopes on track.

No Australian Super Rugby side had won in New Zealand for more than three years – with 32-straight losses – but the Rebels’ breakthrough couldn’t have come at a better time. “We are three on the trot and, to win in New Zealand, is pretty special so it’s the cherry on the cake for this part of the season,” said Melbourne coach Dave Wessels.

Wallabies slam NZRU Former Wallabies Stephen Hoiles and George Gregan have criticised New Zealand Rugby for demanding financial compensation to release Pete Samu to play for Australia. It is believed NZR’s demand of $50,000 to release Samu to play for the Wallabies was rejected by Rugby Australia.

“Pete Samu is born and raised in Melbourne, he’s played all of his club rugby in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. He’s an Australian, he wants to play for Australia”, said Hoiles. “Without doubt it’s tacky.”

Crusaders see off strong challenge from the Chiefs The Crusaders have rumbled past another Kiwi Super Rugby opponent with a 34-20 win over the Chiefs to edge closer to defending their title.

Authoritative derby wins over the Blues and Hurricanes this month were followed by another muscular performance from the

Crusaders’ pack on Saturday in Hamilton.

None of their four tries was pretty but they were enough to make it 10 wins in a row and propel their record to 12 from 14.

The Crusaders take a nine-point lead over the second-placed Hurricanes into the June international

break. They can wrap up the top qualifying spot if successful in their remaining matches against the Highlanders and Blues, both at home.

Richie Mo’unga kicked five goals from as many attempts for the Crusaders and was sound in general play, shading All Blacks

five-eighth rival Damian McKenzie for a test bench spot against France. Mo’unga played behind a pack who set up first-half tries to loose forwards Heiden BedwellCurtis and Matt Todd to lead 2013 at halftime.

George Bridge and Luke Romano bagged second-half tries.

A notable milestone arrived when Wyatt Crockett came off the bench, becoming the first player to represent a Super Rugby team 200 times. Another Crusaders bench warmer injected was Pete Samu, subject of a tug-of-war between the New Zealand and Australian unions.

There were jubilant scenes, the likes of which haven’t been seen for a long time, if ever, on a New Zeal-and harness racing track, when Pat’s Delight took out the final race of the day at the Harness Jewels in Cambridge on Saturday.

The Dexter Dunn-driven second favourite won a stirring stretch battle over Sheriff to get the victory, sending a section of the grandstand in to raptures. The Boys Get Paid group roared in delight as Pat’s Delight went over the line and proceeded to chant Dunn’s name in the minutes postrace.

Getting back on the horse They say the best way to get over an ex is to find a new one and it’s a philosophy Phil and Glenys Kennard have had to adopt recently. Less than a month after the bittersweet sale of their champion pacer Lazarus, the Kennards were back in the Group 1 winner’s circle at the Harness Jewels. Another Masterpiece, driven by Tim Williams, won a stirring stretch battle over stablemate Jesse Duke and Australian raider Petes Big Jim to win the $150,000 2YO Emerald.

The Kennards were on hand with fellow owners Jim and Anne Gibbs, Gary and Kerry Woodham and Ken and Karen Breckon to share in the success.

Rock breaks drought Those on course at the 2018 edition of the Harness Jewels were treated to something special in the 3YO Diamond when Australian filly Shez All Rock secured victory. It was a brilliant front-running performance, one in which she stopped the clock at 1.51.9 with a five-length margin to her contemporaries.

Significantly, it signaled the end of an 11-year drought for Australians at the Harness Jewels.

Yes, she won in the name of Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen, but she wore the green colours of her homeland and will head back across the Tasman to former trainer Mark Pitt almost immediately. “She could have gone a second quicker if I asked her too,” said Purdon.

Superb May drive gets Utmost Delight home at the Jewels There were jubilant scenes when Utmost Delight capped a good season with a second Group 1 success in the 4YO Diamond at the Harness Jewels at Cambridge on Saturday afternoon.

She was clearly the best horse in the race, sitting parked the last lap, kicking clear and defying Delishka in deep stretch to get the

victory in the hands of Ricky May. Breeder and owner Charles Roberts, 94, was unable to be on course due to ailing health, but his family were present to enjoy the win on his behalf.

“It’s a shame my father-in-law can’t be here to see this but it’s really good to see a plan come off,” said son-in-law, Paul Kenny, hus-

band of Mary. “We had the option of going to the Queen of the Pacific in Melbourne last month before this race.

“But Steven (Reid), Mary and I put our heads together and thought we would race at Alex Park twice and make this our main aim for the end of the season.

“I was brought up by a very wise

lady who always said small fish are sweet. So, missing Melbourne and winning today justified the decision for us.”

May drove the daughter of Bettor’s Delight like the best horse in the race, which she had to be from her draw on the outside of the second line.

“Drawing the outside row means

you can’t come to the races with any real expectations,” said Kenny.

“We just hoped she’d do what she always does and that’s make us immensely proud. And she did.”

Kenny says Reid gave him the green-light mid-week that the mare had come on well from last week’s narrow second to stablemate Star Galleria in Auckland.

Visibility issues curtail racing at Te Rapa Concerns for the safety of riders led to the abandonment of racing at Te Rapa yesterday.

Riders met with raceday officials following the completion of the second race after many reported they had difficulties with visibility during the event due to significant

kick back on the recently re-sanded surface.

The problem had been exacerbated by constant rain which saw the track downgraded from a Slow7 to a Slow8 after the running of the first race.

Following a meeting between a

delegation of riders and raceday officials the decision to abandon the meeting was taken.

Earlier in the day the Stephen Marsh trained Belle Testa scored an overdue victory courtesy of a firstclass effort from the country’s leading amateur jockey, Scott Wenn.

M7 Invercargill harness

Wenn saved ground against the rail on the Testa Rossa four-yearold throughout the 2200m contest before angling across heels to issue a challenge early in the run home.

Belle Testa responded and strode clear to win by a comfortable four length margin.

Mid Canterbury’s under-15 A team are eyeing up seventh spot at the Mainland Netball Under-15 Championship after a one-goal loss saw them miss out on making the top six.

The Emma Silva-coached side had high hopes of making the top six in the division one competition held at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre, and if they’d come out on the right side of that one-goal result, they would likely have made it.

Mid Canterbury U15 A began their campaign on Saturday with a good 38-16 win over Nelson U14 A but followed that up with a loss to Nelson U15 A. They then took on a Christchurch Metro side and lost by just one goal.

“So that was the difference between us going up into the top six, and the bottom six in division one,” Silva said. “We were pretty gutted about that because looking at the top six there are some teams in there that I think we could’ve beaten.”

But with their focus turned to the bottom

six, Mid Canterbury U15 A returned on day determined to finish at the top of the bottom six. They took on Marlborough U15 A and won 28-19, before taking on Nelson U15 D, who had lost by a dozen goals to the team Mid Canterbury had beaten earlier in the day.

That game went the way of Mid Canterbury by 33-14.

The tournament enters its final stages at the EA Networks Centre today, with Mid Canterbury U15 A determined to finish as high as they could possibly could.

“I’m really proud of how they have gone, I mean one goal, and it could’ve gone either way,” Silva said.

“They were a wee bit gutted but they are staying positive and we are going for that seventh position overall.”

Mid Canterbury U15 B has also been in action at the tournament in division two, where they’ve made the top six.

There’s 25 teams taking part in the tournament from as far away as South Canterbury, Nelson, Hokitika, Kaikoura and Marlborough.

Milestone victory in Detroit for Dixon Kiwi Indycar driver Scott Dixon has given his championship charge a massive boost by winning the first race in the Detroit double-header yesterday.

The 37-year-old joined Michael Andretti in a share of third on the all-time wins list with his 42nd career victory.
