During the community consultation phase on Ashburton’s town centre redevelopment plan, the East Street water feature appears to have slipped beneath the radar.

While the plan attracted a large amount of community comment, no mention was made either in the plan or by the community of the water feature’s

future, council chief executive Hamish Riach said.

“There was no negative feedback that I am aware of from the community in relation to that vision.

“There was no specific mention of the Three Rivers flowform water sculpture staying or being relocated and feedback from the community at the time appears to have also been silent on the matter,” he said.

Last week Ashburton District councillors voted to remove the water feature and relocate it to the Ashburton Domain, a decision that did not receive unanimous support around the council table.

Mt Hutt ski staff get out and about Mt Hutt was closed yesterday, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t anything energetic for visitors or mountain staff to do.

Management and staff of the skifield organised a free fun-day for their staff and members of the public around Methven and ski area manager, James McKenzie said weather reports had them planning well in advance.

“The weather forecast wasn’t that great, so we decided to have a back-up plan just in case we couldn’t open,” he said.

On offer was the hotly contested touch sevens game in the Methven Domain, which was very entertaining and even Mylee the dog was invited to join in.

The climbing wall at the town office also proved popular. Ski patrol staff ran a climbing session for anyone who wanted to give it a try for the first time or hone their existing skills.

Another morning activity was the Golden Nugget Hunt for kids.

town, the children had to return the nuggets to that business to redeem a prize.

The day’s activities wound up

with a BBQ lunch in the Methven Domain.

This had a real party atmosphere with lots of happy, energetic people enjoying the sunshine and great food.

McKenzie said that more days like yesterday could be on the cards during the remainder of the ski season.

“We may look at doing this again on a closed day, although hopefully we won’t have too many of those.

“The weather also has to be right, a cold snowy day or a rainy northwester day wouldn’t work. We are glad to see so many people out and about enjoying Methven.”

New look for Baring Sq East?

Plans to bring Ashburton’s Baring Square East into the 21st Century have been on the drawing board for years, but the new civic centre and library to be built in that area will see new life breathed into the community space.

Work on a redevelopment plan started in 2008 and the following year it was formally approved as the basis for future planning as part of work on Ashburton’s town centre.

That plan contained 15 key projects and after extensive public consultation a preferred option was adopted by the council in 2010. The project was estimated to cost $2.8 million to complete, with work spread over a number of years. Plans to include the costs in successive council

budgets have never made the cut.

With the new civic centre and library planned for Baring Square East and work on the redevelopment of the town centre under way, Ashburton’s district councillors want plans for the square to be brought back to life, reviewed and a new masterplan developed.

The first development plan, including consultation, cost ratepayers $158,000.

At last week’s council meeting, councillors discussed a report from staff seeking approval to ask both the architects of the civic centre and those working on the town centre redevelopment to come up with a masterplan for the square.

The original plan was a good starting point, but it would need

significant change to ensure the square development was in keeping with developments in the surrounding areas, environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said.

She said while the council could go to tender for the work, there were advantages in asking just the two companies already working in the area to tender for the work as both were familiar with the site and the projects under way.

Athfields, architects for the civic centre and library and Aecom, designers of the town centre, were aware of each other’s projects and how they needed to be linked, she said.

Councillor Peter Reveley was keen to see the square’s plans started from scratch rather than trying to use the existing plan.

“We’ve got old plans and we’ll have a lovely new building so we need to move on. We need to stand back and not use those old plans,” he said.

The town centre and the new buildings needed to flow into one another and Baring Square would be the link between them, Russell Ellis said.

While physical work in the square might not take place immediately, it was important to have a masterplan to ensure all development in the town centre occurred in an integrated way, Donaldson said.

Councillors agreed to ask the two companies for a price for a development of a master plan for Baring Square East. The cost of preparing the plan will come from the council’s reserves contribution.

Public will get a say From P1 The relocation was seen as providing the sculpture with a fitting location and enabling the creation of a revitalised and modern CBD that was fitting in with the vision expressed by designers, Riach said.

The decision to relocate the fountain was based on the vision of a pedestrian and cycle friendly town centre, one that had a modern and consistent look and feel across the whole project, he said.

While there may have been no specific consultation on whether or not the water feature should be relocated, the community would have an opportunity to express views when the draft development plan for the Ashburton Domain goes out for consultation.

Staff were currently updating this plan to show potential locations for the sculpture and feedback on those options would be welcomed, Riach said.

This plan will be discussed in the public section of the July 25 council meeting.

“Council is aware of the amount of commentary relating to the decision (to relocate the water feature) and want to assure the community that there will be an opportunity coming up in the near future for feedback and comments.”

An update on the vision of the CBD revitalisation project would also be made available over coming weeks and work on the eastern side of East Street is scheduled to start in 2020, he said.

Also in the wings is a drive led by councillor Neil Brown to overturn the decision to move the sculpture. He requires the signatures of five councillors (including himself) to revoke that decision.

At last week’s meeting Russell Ellis, Mark Malcolm and Selwyn Price voted with Brown opposing its relocation.

If he is successful in getting the numbers, Brown’s notice to revoke the decision will also come to the July 25 meeting.

A petition calling on the council to let the water feature remain on East Street has been established on change.org. As of last night it had close to 1000 signatures.

Falloon fumes over inaction

After taking the concerns of many road users and residents to the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) around the safety of the intersection between State Highway One and State Highway 79, Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon still believes not enough is being done to improve the safety of the intersection.

NZTA are currently undertaking an interconnected programme of work to improve the safety of the intersection.

The rail crossing has been upgraded recently and a stop sign has been installed to replace the give-way sign for traffic turning on to SH1.

In the summer, overhead powerlines will be removed and safe speed zone signs will be installed which will drop the speed limit at the intersection when appropriate.

Falloon suggested to NZTA to extend the length of the turning bay for southbound traffic turning on to SH79, better and earlier signage advising motorists of the turn-off, widening of the road to include a merging lane for northbound traffic turning on to State Highway One and a reduction in the speed limit through the township on either side.

In a written response to Falloon, NZTA senior manager of system design Kevin Reid said they had no current plans to construct a left turning lane from SH79 on to SH1.

“Further road improvements at the intersection, including installing streetlighting and extending the right-turn bay will be done in the 2019-2020 summer sealing season.

“The extended right-turn bay will provide more space for traffic waiting to turn right.

“This project will also look at possible improvement to the advance signage for the intersection, particularly for southbound traffic.”

loon’s suggestion for better signage that NZTA had changed the intersection control from a give way to a stop sign.

“It is disappointing to see that drivers are not complying with the road signage and we will re-evaluate the placement of signs at this location as part of the intersection improvements,” he said.

However, Falloon says not enough action is being planned to improve the safety at the intersection.

“I’m pleased that NZTA have agreed to on the need to lengthen the turning bay, and this work will be completed in the next

twelve months,” he said.

“At present it is too short, filled up by just two campervans or one milk tanker, presenting a danger for south-bound traffic continuing on State Highway One. “Unfortunately, while NZTA recognise drivers are not complying (with) the small and difficult to see signage, they still have no plans to improve it.”

“Similarly they have no plans to widen the road to allow for a merging lane. Some vehicles are already using the berm and side of the road as a de-facto merging lane, which is incredibly dangerous.”

Work has also been budgeted for at the EA Networks Centre, with $22,000 to be spent

this year, $16,000 next year and $120,000 in 2021/2022.

Looking ahead, the council projects next year’s rate increase across the district will average 5 per cent, then over the next seven years it will be significantly lower, dropping to just 1.2 per cent in 2027/2028.

Currently there are 16,943 rateable properties in the district – commercial and residential – and this is anticipated to rise to 17,931 by 20227/2028.

Council signs off this year’s 5.7 per cent rate rise

It may well be a National Party stronghold, but that is not stopping Labour MP Jo Luxton from raising her profile in Mid Canterbury.

Luxton is a List MP, based in the Rangitata electorate.

She has an electorate office in Timaru, but not in Ashburton.

Despite this, Luxton wants to be a strong advocate in government for the residents of Ashburton, and try and meet as many people as possible in the town.

To this end she has started fortnightly clinics at Community House on Cass Street.

“I’m really excited at the prospect of being able to grow my presence in Ashburton, and to give people the opportunity to come to either my staff or I for advice, support or just to have a chat,” Luxton said.

“It is most certainly one of my top priorities to make it to the clinics, but in my absence, a staff member will be on hand and will inform me of anything I need to know.”

Her first clinic was on Monday, and they will now be held fortnightly each Monday at the same place, 10.30am to midday.

She said the inaugural clinic was a great success, and had needed to be extended by half an hour due to demand.

“We had six meetings, with varying issues including Work and Income and immigration,” Luxton said.

“The success of Monday’s clinic has shown me that there is a need for it, and affirms the commitment I’ve made to have someone available to help the community once a fortnight.”

Farm worker earns alcohol interlock Mid Canterbury farm worker Norton Richard Greene, 27, came to New Zealand to escape Ireland’s heavy drinking culture but found himself in the Ashburton District Court this week facing a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol.

Green was stopped at 2.45am on East Street on June 8 after police saw his car weaving in its lane; he blew 977mcg, almost four times the legal adult limit.

Duty lawyer Gretchen Hart said Green had walked the 8km from his farm to town and accepted he would be sentenced to an alcohol interlock device.

She said he had come from Ireland two years ago to get away from its drinking culture and had not consumed alcohol until meeting with a friend and socialising on the night he was caught behind the wheel.

“He feels terrible. He knows he was an idiot for driving after drinking and that he is not someone who should consume alcohol. He had a significant error of judgement.”

Community magistrate Sally O’Brien accepted he was remorseful but said he had been a danger to himself and the public at large.

She reduced the fine because of the cost of the alcohol interlock device, which is in the vicinity of $3000. The device is attached to his vehicle, which will only operate after an alcohol-free breath sample.

The magistrate fined him $450 and $130 court costs, and disqualified him from driving for 28 days before he can start the alcohol interlock process. “That will last 12 months depending on your compliance and then you can apply for a zero alcohol licence that will last three years.”

Mary Broan Bravo, 26, admitted driving with excess breath alcohol on Chalmers Avenue on May 5.

The meatworker had been drinking at a wedding but left in her car after an argument. She was stopped, breath-tested by police and blew 600mcg.

Alex Noel Baker, 21, of Fairton, admitted driving while his licence was suspended.

Baker, who has a learner’s licence, was caught in a cycle of offending and needed to progress to a restricted licence, duty lawyer Roz Burnside said.

She asked the magistrate to show Baker some mercy.

Her worship obliged, sentencing Baker to 80 hours’ community work and imposing no further disqualification.

Jaidyn Blair Barranger-Tairi celebrated his 19th birthday by getting black-out drunk and breaking a window at Netherby Four Square.

He admitted a charge of wilful damage when he appeared yesterday.

Magistrate O’Brien convicted him and ordered him to pay reparation of $3480.

Magistrate O’Brien read from the summary of facts that Johnston had crashed her car into a fence and then into an irrigation race.

“You caused significant damage to the fence, your car and some damage to yourself.”

She said 1123mcg was a very high reading. “You should not have got behind the wheel. You were clearly a danger to yourself and the public, indeed anyone else on the road at the time.”

She noted Johnston had a pre-

Brendan Jared Thompson was sentenced to nine months’ supervision after admitting a charge of possessing cannabis.

Police found him with 30g after searching a car in which he was a passenger. He is just about to finish a sentence of community detention, imposed for breaching a sentence of community work.

Rose Caitlin Cockburn, 22, blew 993mcg when police stopped her driving on Cass Street on June 16.

The apprentice painter admitted a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol. She was fined $950, with $130 costs, and disqualified from driving for nine months.

Magistrate O’Brien said Cockburn would normally qualify for an alcohol interlock device but she did not own a car.

Nicola Everdina Lemberg, 46, admitted a charge of careless driving causing injury. She was remanded to July 30 for sentencing, after restorative justice.

Lemberg caused a crash on Walnut Avenue on April 29 and a woman was injured.

Magistrate O’Brien said restorative justice would provide Lemberg with an opportunity to speak with the victim of her careless driving.

“Hopefully the victim will be willing to speak to you. It is normally a positive experience for all involved.”

Subdivision first-build under way

Thyme Stream developers Mary and Steve MacLachlan have been pleasantly surprised by the huge interest in their Methven subdivision project.

“We put our heart and soul into it, but it doesn’t mean people will like it,” Mary said.

But people have liked it, so much so that the first four sections in stage one sold almost immediately, followed by half of the remaining 12 sections in stage two.

The buyers of the one-acre blocks have come from a wide range of locations, including Australia and the North Island. They also include a wide range of ages, from young families to those with grandchildren.

“So far the whole subdivision is an awesome mix of people,” Mary said.

Mary credited her late mother Shirley Holmes for having the vision for the development. And Mary and Steve had spent years visiting other subdivision projects, learning a lot along the way.

For Thyme Stream, their goal was to maintain uninterrupted mountain view corridors from each section. The sections had been laid out accordingly and

popular with locals, but is currently closed as road construction is under way.

Among their happy customers are Rona and Colin Woolsey, who are in the process of constructing the subdivision’s first house.

The couple moved to Methven from Tauranga in 2017, following their three adult children and

They have undertaken extensive tree plantings and created a gravelled walkway of almost one kilometre. It runs along Mt Harding Stream, connecting in the area of the Methven Walkway.

Colin works as a truck dispatcher at Molloy Agriculture and the couple can not wait to move from the town centre to their new home on the outskirts.

The design of the four-bedroom structure has centred around a cathedral window in the lounge room with a view to the Southern Alps, framed by a 40-degree pitch symmetrical roof peak.

Builder Busty Coleman of Big River Builders said the house was due for completion in October and the timeline was all going according to plan. The weather had been favourable. Even a snowfall in early June prior to the roof being installed did not cause any holdups, as it happened on the long Queen’s Birthday weekend and was melted by the time construction resumed.

‘Epidemic’ of phones, driving

The number of drivers using cellphones in Ashburton may be reaching an epidemic level, but our top roading cop believes the step up to a $1000 fine may be a step too far.

Following a law change, police in the Australian state of Queensland can fine drivers, caught using mobile phones while driving, 1000 Australian dollars.

Mid-South Canterbury Highway Patrol Sergeant Steve Burgerhout said while he believed that the fine was “pretty hardcore”, he has growing concerns for the amount of mobile phones being used while driving in the district.

“It really has become an epidemic,” he said.

During the week, highway patrol staff undertook mobile phone and seatbelt checking operations in Ashburton, and were incredibly concerned.

“In the hour before lunch we had eight cellphones (ticketed) and two seatbelts,” he said.

“In the hour after lunch we had seven for phones and three for seatbelts.”

That means drivers are being pulled over and ticketed at a rate of one every six minutes.

Burgerhout said many driv-

ers attempt to hide their phones below the window level in the vehicles to prevent police seeing them, but Burgerhout said using an elevated viewing position quickly stopped that tactic.

Currently the largest on-thespot fine that can be given to the driver of a light vehicle is $630, which is given if a driver is caught driving 40-60km/h faster than

the signposted speed limit, and their licence is also automatically suspended.

“If they are caught going faster than 60km/h (above the speed limit) they have to appear in court,” he said.

Burgerhout said that studies overseas had shown that driving while using a cellphone could be more distracting than driving

with low-levels of alcohol in their system.

Police do hear all kinds of excuses as to why drivers are using their mobile phones while driving, but very few get through.

“We get all sorts of excuses such as ‘I was changing my music’,” he said.

“You can’t change your music while driving as that is still classified as using your cellphone.”

Currently in New Zealand drivers who are caught using a handheld mobile phone receive an $80 fine and 20 demerit points.

Burgerhout said drivers had a variety of reactions when they were ticketed, but said given the prevalence of offending, doubted whether the current fine was having an impact.

“A $1000 fine for a first offence is a rather large stick,” he said.

Fines do change in some places based on the consumer price index, but Burgerhout said New Zealand fines remain fixed, and that he was not sure how easy it was for them to be changed.

“The fine for not wearing a seatbelt was changed from $75 to $150 about 15 years ago and it hasn’t changed since then,” he said.

“I’m not sure how easy it is for them to be changed.”

Cat causes car crash Emergency services were called to a crash in Hinds last night after a vehicle crashed into a container.

A police spokesperson said the vehicle had reportedly swerved to avoid a cat. One person was transported to Ashburton Hospital with moderate injuries.

In addition, a further penalty of 10 per cent will be added to any unpaid rates and charges levied prior to June 30, 2019 if still unpaid by August 31.

Airport fees A charging regime for aircraft visiting and landing at Ashburton Airport will remain at $5 for this financial year, but the airport’s owner, the Ashburton District Council, is looking at ways of ensuring all planes landing pay the fees they should.

Police focus to go on seatbelts Police are set to be putting the spotlight on seatbelt use for the month of July as they look to minimise deaths on New Zealand roads.

“You can’t hit pause in a crash and quickly put your seatbelt on,” national manager of road policing Superintendent Steve Greally said.

“The time to do that is when you first get in the car. Seatbelts are not optional, people shouldn’t treat them like they are.

“Quite simply, they are insurance on your life. If you end up in a crash, that seatbelt

is your lifesaver.

“Sadly, we know almost a third of people who die on our roads are unrestrained vehicle occupants. The tragic thing is, these deaths are preventable.'

Police are focusing on seatbelt wearing because it’s one of the four main behaviours that contribute to death and serious injury on the road, and this July, police will have an increased focus on seatbelt wearing.

“If people buckle up because they’re scared of getting a ticket, that’s the win of a life potentially saved for us,” he said.

NZ Transport Agency general manager safety, health and environment Greg Lazzaro said every year around 90 people die on our roads because they weren’t wearing a seatbelt in a crash.

“Every one of those deaths is a tragedy, and many of those tragedies could have been prevented if the person had buckled up.

Wearing a seatbelt increases the chances of surviving a crash by around 40 per cent. The simple fact is that seatbelts save lives.”

Automobile Association spokesperson Simon Douglas says that it’s not just extreme or

reckless drivers that aren’t buckling up.

“An AA Research Foundation study showed that the most common groups not wearing a seatbelt and dying included people in rural areas, people driving for work, and the elderly,” he said.

“If you know someone who doesn’t always buckle up, say something to them.

A few words from a family member, friend or workmate might make the difference.

“No matter when or where you are driving, everyone needs to be wearing a seatbelt.”

A driver was lucky to escape injury when their truck “slid on cow sh**” and rolled off the road near Outram, Dunedin yesterday. A police spokeswoman said the truck slid off the road and into a culvert about 10.40am. The driver was not injured and the road was not blocked, she said. The driver had moved left to give space to an oncoming vehicle, hit a patch of slippery material, then rolled the truck as it reached the deep culvert.

Hipkins: ‘Schools can charge for camps’ NZME School camps have been saved – but parents will still have to pay for them.

Education Minister Chris Hipkins said new guidelines will allow schools to charge parents for school camps and still get a new grant of $150 per student per year for schools that stop asking parents for “donations”.

The impromptu announcement in response to questions drew loud applause at a NZ Principals’ Federation conference in Auckland yesterday.

Dunedin North Intermediate principal Heidi Hayward, who asked the question, said Ministry of Education officials only last week “were very clear that, under the rules, if we take on the scheme [the $150 grant, we will no longer be able to ask parents for any form of donation and that would rule out camps”.

“In our decile-7 school, if we were to take on the scheme, we would no longer offer the school camp because the school camp costs more than the donation,” she told Hipkins.

Hipkins replied: “The rules around the criteria for accepting the $150 haven’t yet been completed, we are in the process of developing that. But I can confirm that

The May 30 Budget allocated $75 million a year from next January to pay the $150 per student to all schools in deciles 1 to 7 that stop asking parents for donations.

The grant will give a huge boost to low-decile schools.

But mid-decile schools have said they would have to cancel their camps if they accepted the grant because ministry rules consider camps in school time to be part of the curriculum so parents can only be asked for voluntary “donations” towards them.

NZ withdraws from telescope project NZME The government has withdrawn from playing a part in the world’s biggest radio telescope because it says the benefits no longer outweigh the costs.

New Zealand was a founding member of the non-profit Square Kilometre Array Organisation – and last year downgraded from full membership to associate membership.

But the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment announced yesterday that New Zealand would withdraw from the project completely.

The array is being built in the deserts of Australia and South Africa and is expected to be powerful enough to detect very faint radio signals that were emitted billions of light years away from Earth.

It is hoped that the telescope will help answer fundamental questions about the universe, such as how it formed and

evolved, the origin of cosmic magnetism, and whether there is life elsewhere in the universe.

Vice-Chancellor of the Auckland University of Technology Derek McCormack has previously said downgrading New Zealand’s involvement would lock out New Zealand scientists, innovators and engineers from enormous benefits.

He said the NZ SKA Alliance — a collaboration that included AUT, University of Auckland, Massey University, Nyriad, Catalyst, Open Parallel — had collectively invested up to $10 million, more than twice what the Government had put in to the project.

But University of Auckland cosmologist Professor Richard Easther has called SKA a “zombie project” that was not welcomed by most astronomers.

Parents take child’s vaccination to court NZME A mother and father are battling in the Family Court over whether to get their child vaccinated.

The father of the girl – who was soon to start school – wanted her to get her shots, in line with Ministry of Health and World Health Organisation guidelines.

But the mother, who is strongly anti-vaccination, felt her daughter is at risk of an adverse reaction to immunisation thanks to “a strong personal and family history for dairy and gluten intolerance, eczema, food and chemical sensitivities and medication-adverse reactions”.

The father filed an application in January 2018 under the Care of Children Act 2004 with a two-page affidavit outlining his reasoning. That October, the mother filed a 33 page affidavit in response, along with 150

pages of evidence.

She also included an affidavit from a Canadian professor, who is well known for his anti-vaxx views.

The mother had sought to file evidence from another two US-based doctors.

A preliminary hearing was held at the Waitakere Family Court in December to decide whether that evidence is admissible.

In her decision published in June, Judge Belinda Pidwell decided neither of those doctors had adequate knowledge of the New Zealand immunisation programme, neither had examined the girl directly and neither was fully credible.

Given the Court had already ordered a report from a New Zealand expert, she declined the mother’s application to file additional evidence.

The Court has not yet made a decision on whether the girl should be immunised.

Principals’ Federation president Whetu Cormick said principals would be “pleased and relieved” that they could still charge for camps.

Conference convenor and Tomarata School principal Jill Corkin said some schools stopped running camps after health and safety laws were tightened, but most had started running them again.

Waitakere Area Principals’ Association president Martyn Weatherill, who said last month that some West Auckland schools would have to cancel their camps, said Hipkins had adopted “a common-sense approach”.

Cormick said computers, technology materials and other curriculum costs should be funded by the Government on top of the $150 grant.

Cormick also told Hipkins that hundreds of small rural schools would be without a principal in a few years unless the Government lifted principals’ salaries above its latest pay offer, which the principals rejected last week.

Hipkins refused to answer principals’ questions about pay in advance of a meeting between the ministry and the NZ Educational Institute this Friday.

We’re not at the end of the story – yet A

week can be a long time, especially in politics.

It’s enough time for a political party to have their world turned upside down and it can be enough time for a local government group to be sent scrambling into a defensive stance after what would have seemed like a rather innocuous decision, Today marks a week since Ashburton District Councillors and our Mayor Donna Favel voted to remove the water feature from East Street and relocate it to a new site, likely to be at the Ashburton Domain.

And what a seven days it’s been.

I don’t think anyone, especially those charged with making the decision, would have quite

expected such a strong reaction from the community, but as history would suggest (i-SITE anyone?) this district’s people know well how to react to something they’re not happy with.

A petition, huge amounts of discussion both online and on the streets, and plenty of willing people to stand up and say that the relocation of the water feature is wrong, shows again that when

Mid Cantabrians feel strongly about something they like to let those making the decisions know about it.

This isn’t any new sort of activity, we’ve seen it before. But, there are a couple of issues around this latest craze that are particularly concerning. In a number of areas post the decision it was stated by officials that the public were consulted on the matter prior to the decision being made.

Yet, nowhere in any of the consultation documents is there anything that would point towards the water feature being shifted.

Some say this is fine because it’s not something that needs to be discussed.

Well, public reaction would

certainly suggest otherwise.

The second major area of concern however is that it would appear that the process of uplifting such a structure and simply moving it down the road to a new home isn’t quite as straightforward as it would appear to be thought.

In fact, a large number of people spoken to by this newsroom, some who have played a part in the history of the water feature, have all spoken of their concern that dismantling the feature and attempting to move it would prove fruitless as the structure wouldn’t stand up to that sort of pressure. In short, it’s likely that it would be damaged in the move and therefore unable to be main-

tained in its current form should it find a new location to rest.

That automatically throws up a few red lights.

The next couple of days are going to be very interesting in this, so far, never-ending tale with a few more twists and turns yet to eventuate.

But for the people of this district, those who it should be remembered, are the same people who played the sole role in allowing our councillors and mayor to be in the position of making such a decision, let’s hope that the right decision is made, for the right reasons and with the right amount of due diligence.

All things that perhaps were a little lacking in the first instance.

Policy progress that delivers for Kiwi families O

n July 1, the government made more progress in its plan to tackle the longterm challenges facing New Zealand.

One milestone I’m especially proud of is our increase to entitlements for new parents.

From the start of this month, the parental leave payment has gone up by over $20 per week.

This is on top of our action to extend paid parental leave to 26 weeks – one of the first things we did in government.

Having a baby is one of the most beautiful parts of life, but can also be one of the most stressful – I’m sure all parents can agree. I know that an extra $20 a week in the pocket at this time will be helpful.

We’ve always known how important it is for parents to be able to spend time at home with their newborns – but for too long the conversation stalled.

Under National, New Zealand’s paid parental leave entitlements were some of the lowest in the OECD. That’s why, back in 2012, Labour introduced legislation that would have given new parents more time at home with their babies.

In opposition we could see the need, we fought hard to better support parents, and in government we changed the law within our first 100 days in office.

I know that since 2011 the Ashburton District Council has been working towards zero waste.

Since introducing the wheelie bin service in 2017, the weight of recycling from each household has increased by 32 per cent.

This shows that our community has made good progress towards creating a more sustainable district.

YOUR VIEW Water feature Further to your article in Ashburton Guardian June 28 advising of Council’s intention to relocate the CBD fountain to the Ashburton Domain, I would sincerely hope that any final decision would see this suggestion overturned.

I have always considered the sculpture in East Street to be the most significant attraction that Ashburton has ever commissioned, and it is incomprehensible to me that today’s councillors are determined to see it relegated to an unidentified spot in the domain.

Over recent years I have walked through the trees in East Street several times each week and have been felt privileged to be able to appreciate and enjoy the wonderful water feature that plays in

our town centre, Unlike other statues and monuments that stand cold and motionless this feature is so unique.

It is alive, as it bubbles and flows endlessly, just as the water in the three rivers it depicts.

It seems our councillors and planning officers need to be reminded that water is the life -lood of our nation. There is no other area in New Zealand that owes more to this most precious commodity that flows so freely through our rivers and aquifers – than the Mid Canterbury district.

Iain Trousdell’s wonderful creation is also an acknowledgement of the vision and foresight of our fore-bears whose vision and hard work shaped our district’s future.

Therefore, it is appropriate that we continue to acknowledge their efforts in securing the pros-

perity we all have the privilege to enjoy today.

I am confident that a decision to leave the existing feature where it is, would be met with the approval of the majority of citizens.

Any decision that would see the sculpture relocated to the domain would not only be costly but totally irresponsible – as it would only be the ducks who would be able to enjoy the new facility to defecate in.

Airstrike hits migrant centre AP An airstrike hit a detention centre for migrants in the Libyan capital early yesterday, killing at least 40 people, a health official in the country’s UN-supported government said.

The airstrike, targeting the detention centre in Tripoli’s Tajoura neighbourhood, also wounded 80 migrants, said Malek Merset, a Health Ministry spokesman. Merset posted photos of migrants being taken in ambulances to hospitals.

Footage circulating online and said to be from inside the migrant detention centre showed blood and body parts mixed with rubble and migrants’ belongings.

The UN refugee agency in Libya condemned the airstrike on the detention centre, which houses 616 migrants and refugees.

The Tripoli-based government blamed the self-styled Libyan National Army, led by Khalifa Hifter, for the airstrike and called for the UN support mission in Libya to establish a fact-finding committee to investigate.

A spokesman for Hifter’s forces did not immediately answer phone calls and messages seeking comment. Local media reported the LNA had launched airstrikes against a militia camp near the detention centre.

The LNA launched an offensive against the weak Tripoli-based government in April.

Many camps for militias loosely allied with the UN-supported government are in Tajoura, east of the city centre, and Hifter’s forces have targeted such camps with airstrikes in recent weeks. The LNA said earlier this week it had begun an air campaign on rival forces in Tripoli after it lost control of Gharyan.

His forces include the remnants of Gadhafi’s army as well as tribal fighters and ultra-con-

servative Islamists known as Salafists.

Hifter’s forces boast MiG fighter jets as well as drones, attack helicopters and mine-resistant vehicles. It was not immediately clear what munitions were used in the airstrike early Wednesday.

The fighting for Tripoli has threatened to plunge Libya into another bout of violence on the scale of the 2011 conflict.

Hifter says he is determined to restore stability to the North African country. He is backed

by Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia while his rivals are supported

by Turkey and Qatar.

At least 6000 migrants from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and other nations are locked in dozens of detention facilities in Libya that are run by militias accused of torture and other abuses.

Most of the migrants were apprehended by European Union-funded and trained Libyan coast guards while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea into Europe.

The UN refugee agency has said that more than 3000 migrants are in danger because they are held in detention centres close to the front lines between Hifter’s forces and the militias allied with the Tripoli government.

Monsoon rains cause Indian dam to breach AP A dam breached and flooded half a dozen villages in western India after heavy monsoon rains, leaving at least three people dead and over 20 others missing, officials said yesterday.

The Tiware dam breached late Tuesday during incessant rains and swept away nearly a dozen homes, said Datta Bhadakawad, a civil administrator in Maharashtra state’s Ratnagiri district.

He said rescue teams recovered three bodies of the villagers and were searching for the missing.

Datta said a preliminary investigation suggested the heavy rainfall swelled the water level behind the small dam, causing the breach.

Heavy monsoon rains in Maharashtra have led to at least

34 deaths since Monday night, from collapsed walls, drownings and other causes. Dozens of others have been injured.

The worst-hit city has been India’s financial and entertainment capital, Mumbai, where

It says the Baluchistan Liberation Army is an armed separatist group that targets security forces and civilians mainly

It says the group carried out a suicide attack in August 2018 that targeted Chinese engineers in Baluchistan, a November 2018 attack on the Chinese Consulate in Karachi, and a May 2019 attack on a

luxury hotel in the port town of Gwadar.

Baluchistan has long been the scene of a low-level insurgency by armed groups demanding more autonomy and a greater share in the region’s natural resources.

South Korean Gangnam Style singer Psy has been interrogated by South Korean police in connection with an ongoing sex scandal that has engulfed the K-pop industry. According to media, Psy was summoned as a reference witness in an ongoing investigation into K-pop mogul Yang Hyun-suk, who has been accused of procuring sex workers for foreign business investors in 2014. The scandal began when police charged the musician Seungri, a singer in the YG boyband BIGBANG, with operating a prostitution ring within a popular South Korean nightclub.

Carry On films to return The Carry On film series could be making a return, 27 years after the last film was released. Film producer Brian Baker, 72, has spent £500,000 purchasing the rights to sell Carry On related merchandise in an attempt to revive the comedy franchise by selling enough products to eventually finance three new movies. Baker bought the rights after winning a legal battle against ITV in which a judge ruled the network was not using the brand meaning its trademark became invalid. The last Carry On movie to hit the big screen was in 1992 and the producer has insisted he wishes to continue the legacy of the films’ founder Peter Rogers.

Spice Girls tour gaffe Mel B has admitted she was ‘premature to announce a world tour’ after reports Geri Horner has yet to commit to the idea. Ginger Spice, 46, is reportedly contemplating quitting the Spice Girls again, 21 years after she originally left.

It is understood Geri is yet to commit to the girl group performing a series of international dates. It comes after Scary got fans excited by announcing during the final show of their reunion tour that they were hoping to play in Australia.

Mel has since said: “So I announced it on stage, yes, without everybody else signing off 100 per cent.” There were hopes the group could capitalise on a surge in popularity by following their sell-out 13-date comeback tour of the UK with dates overseas.

25 years of in-store days

The finishing touches are in place and Ruralco is ready to welcome thousands of customers through the doors to the 25th instalment of their in-store days.

A large marquee is set up at its Ashburton store and will be packed with more than 100 suppliers, with everyone who purchases more than $250 of products during the two days going into a draw to win something from a long list of prizes worth $250,000 in total.

Ruralco CEO Robert Sharkie said they expected numbers to be similar to those of previous years.

“The past few years we have had 1000 for lunch and we think it will be about that this year as well,” he said.

“The weather looks good, but that doesn’t bother us too much, if it is raining, it might even get them off the farm earlier.

“We have had rain and snow in the past and that hasn’t stopped us.”

Sharkie said celebrating the 25th edition of the in-store days with the $250,000 came from wanting to not only give back to the farm and farmers, but the whole family.

“There are so many giveaways that are just farm stuff, like electric fencing, so we wanted to do stuff that would be for the whole

25 grand of prizes probably wouldn’t be enough so $250,000 was the next step,” he laughed.

“Everyone thought I was mad.”

New dam and pond rules will affect many farmers Some Mid Canterbury farmers and growers may have to fork out $5000 for an engineering report on their farm storage ponds and dams under new regulations proposed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

IrrigationNZ says the proposed regulations will bring significant and unnecessary costs and farmers should have their say while the rules are out for public consultation.

IrrigationNZ chief executive Elizabeth Soal said storage ponds and dams were common on farms and used to improve drought resilience.

As well as on-farm ponds and dams, some other forms of water infrastructure will also be captured by the proposed regulations.

Soal said central and local government should be supporting appropriate water storage.

“While we recognise that large and highrisk dams do need a safety assurance programme in place, the proposed new regulations disincentivise on-farm storage by imposing significant unjustified costs on farmers who have small ponds and dams which have little or no practical safety risks,” she says.

The proposed regulations would apply to: ■■ Dams or ponds which are less than four metres high and hold 30,000m3 or more, or ■■ are four metres or more high and hold 20,000m3 or more.

At a minimum, pond or dam owners

whose storage meets one of the two criteria above would need to engage a recognised engineer to undertake a Potential Impact Assessment of the pond or dam (at a cost of around $5000) and submit it to their council.

If the Potential Impact Assessment of a pond or dam failure was found to be medium or high then a dam safety assurance programme would be required (at an estimated cost of $6000 to $30,000) along with an annual audit at a cost of around $5000.

“We are concerned that the criteria used to assess the effects of large dams is being applied to quite small on-farm ponds and dams.

“Many storage ponds in New Zealand are also built on plains. These ponds store much of their water below ground level which means that most of the water would not escape even if a failure occurred and any escaped water would rapidly dissipate,” Soal said. ”The proposed new regulations are out of step with international requirements which typically only apply a safety assurance programme to large dams. For example, in the USA dam safety requirements apply to dams over 7.6 metres high which hold over 61,000m3 and in Queensland they apply to dams over eight metres which hold 500,000m3 or more.”

As well as applying to water stored for irrigation, the new regulations could affect farmers who have effluent ponds, flood prevention or capture dams, stock water storage ponds, and canals or races with built-up sides.

Jetstar pulls out of Chch-Sydney service

Jetstar will pull out of its Christchurch to Sydney service due to tough market conditions.

The Qantas subsidiary will suspend its five-times-a-week flights from the middle of October.

“We’ve been monitoring the route for some time due to its challenging commercial performance and have decided the capacity could be put to better use on routes where there is greater demand within the Qantas group network,’’ a Jetstar spokesman said.

Passengers who have booked flights between Christchurch

and Sydney from October 15 will be rebooked on to Qantas services on the same day or can request a full refund.

Qantas flies the route seven times a week.

Jetstar will continue to offer up to 10 direct flights a week from Christchurch to Australia, with daily services to Melbourne and three services a week to the Gold Coast.

Jetstar chief executive Gareth Evans told the Herald last month the airline had seen a softening in demand in New Zealand during the past six months.

Air New Zealand is also scaling back network growth in response to weaker conditions.

NZME The Ministry for Primary Industries is investigating Hell Pizza after receiving a number of complaints from customers.

This comes after the fast-food chain sold more than 3000 of its new Burger Pizzas last month, with most customers not realising its burger-like topping was made of Beyond Meat, a plant-based meat alternative.

When the news broke last week, MPI quickly stepped in, saying that after several complaints it would be talking to Hell Pizza about “the importance of consumers being aware of ingredients so they can make informed decisions”.

It’s understood that the industry body has since met with Hell to discuss the matter.

One of the major concerns associated with the stunt was that it could have exposed Kiwis to allergens.

Beyond Meat’s website warns that pea protein, one of the product’s main components, could pose a risk for people who are allergic to peanuts.

“Peas are legumes,” the website says. “People with severe allergies to legumes like peanuts should be cautious when introducing pea protein into their diet because of the possibility of a pea allergy.”

Dr Bodo Lang, head of marketing at the University of Auckland, said there was a chance the stunt had also breached the Fair Trading Act, which forbids “misleading and deceptive conduct” including selling in a way that is “liable to mislead the public as to the nature ... of goods”.

“If you’re saying ‘burger’, I think the vast majority of people would say burger means hamburger and

hamburger means beef,” Lang said.

But despite possible breaches of the law, he thought the saga could increase sales if people felt it meant Hell was confident in the quality of its product.

“Consumers may want to experience this first hand,” he said.

“It’s implicit that they’re suggesting to you that this stuff is as good as the real thing, so me and my meatosaurus friends will give it a try.”

Hell has a long history of pulling controversial marketing stunts to cut through the cluttered pizza market.

This included a 2014 campaign

that saw the company pinning real rabbit skins to a billboard to promote its limited edition rabbit pizza over Easter.

More recently, Hell also showed it was responsive to events in the news, running a billboard promoting an “unruly tourist pizza”, timed to coincide with the havoc being caused by a group of visitors from England.

A disclaimer under the name of the new pizza warns potential buyers that the pizza “may contain hair and ants” – a reference to some of the complaints the troublesome tourists had made at restaurants around New Zealand in their bid to evade the bill.

■■ Reduce the heat to low and add the leek and garlic. Cook gently until the leek begins to soften, then add the carrot, parsnip and swede. Mix in any remaining seasoned flour.

■■ Pour in the wine and allow to bubble up. Add the stock and mix well, then pour over the lamb. The liquid should just cover the lamb and vegetables. If not, add more stock.

■■ Place baking paper, cut to fit, on top of the liquid to protect the

meat and reduce evaporation.

Cover with the lid, then place in the oven and cook for 2 hours until the lamb is very tender.

■■ To serve: Serve hot with Israeli couscous and steamed green vegetables. Top cooked lamb with a gremolata – very finely chop 2 cloves garlic, add 1/2 C finely chopped parsley and grate the zest of 1-2 lemons.

Gently mix together.

Rakaia Women’s Institute

Age Concern’s 206 Club were delighted to be included in the recent Volunteer Week when they were visited

by Andrew and Rose Falloon on the Monday and David Brown and Dellwyn Moylan on the Wednesday.

Our high profile volunteers served meals, washed dishes and called housie as well as interacting with all attendees.

Their visits and interest were both appreciated and enjoyed by all involved.

The Elder Abuse Awareness Week was highlighted with an information display in the Arcade and Anna Arrowsmith of Families Without Violence distributed lovely baking and cards donated to her Bake My Day initiative.

We also extend thanks to the media for their coverage and the council for the lovely colour purple on the town clock.

It was a special occasion to attend the Safe Communities accreditation function at the Hakatere Marae on May 29.

All present were treated to a very well organised and meaningful event.

Twenty-seven organisations have signed the charter, committing their efforts to this venture.

Our Confident Driving Course for Mature Drivers in May was fully subscribed and very well received by all participants.

Age Concern’s services can be accessed by phoning the office on 308 6817, or calling in to 206 Cameron Street. All enquiries welcomed.

Members gathered in June to celebrate their 88th birthday. The motto was “A little forethought saves a lot of afterthought”.

After the general business, entries were finalised for the Mid Canterbury Federation Cup Day, Eisteddfod Quizzco. The theme being Winter Hi Jinx.

Members brought along their Teddy Bears and dolls for a Teddy Bears’ Picnic. They were assembled on a rug on the floor with their party goodies, and many interesting histories told.

A special afternoon tea with birthday cake was served by Pam and Fay. The Monica Johnson Cup for most points for the day was won by Pam Dolan with her competition entries in cut flowers and ginger loaf.

Ashburton County Lions Members of the Ashburton County Lions Club gathered on Friday, June 28 for their annual changeover celebrations.

Outgoing president Nicola welcomed everyone especially the large number of visitors including Lions dignitaries, the in-coming president’s family from the North Island, partners and visitors from other nearby Lions clubs.

Following an enjoyable social hour and meal together, the District Governor Tony Thomas made several presentations including our quiet achiever for the year Bev Watkins who was thanked for all her services to the club.

President Nicola Kelly then presented her annual report reflecting on the club’s many achievements over the past year and thanked members for their support and help at our many fundraising and social events that made it such a successful year.

She ended with a Conrad Hilton quote: Achievement seems to be connected with action. Successful men and women keep moving, they make mistakes, but they don’t quit.

Past District Governor Fern Blake then completed the induction of the new president Marie McAnulty, secretary Jan Stonyer, treasurer Wendy Watson and the rest of the incoming board.

Fern wished everyone well for another successful year ahead during 2019/2020.

The evening then closed with some light-hearted tail twisting and the drawing of the raffle.

Ashburton Woodworkers President Bruce Ferriman welcomed 19 members to our June meeting.

Bruce mentioned of the progress of the façade which is to be erected on the clubroom’s roof, in keeping with the other buildings in the Plains complex and soon to be placed in position.

The annual club raffle will commence at Boulevard Day, in September with Merv Peck constructing the traditional wooden rocking horse, Gary Maxey

Ashburton Golf Club Some brilliant golf played last week, with eight players vying for four semi-final spots in the Presidents Cup, and another eight going for the plate.

In the Plate, Allan White and George Brown will face off, after both having great wins, as will Ken Clucas and Chris Robertson who both overcame Brandon legends to get into the semis.

Should be two great games, both too close to call, good luck all four.

In the Trophy, Braydon took care of Barry and will now face Vince who had a battle with Ron until the last hole after being five down early. This will be two big hitters trying to out drive each over, should be fun to watch.

In the other semi Paddy will face Pauly G after they both played out of their skins to get there. Pauly beat Robbie in a great game and Paddy beat Stu Dunlop after they shot nett 64 and 65 respectively, what a match.

It was great to work with the folk from Selwyn Community Choir – even found a couple of ex members of Mid Canterbury Choir who are now living in the Selwyn District.

Co-ordinator Christine Richards gave her report, with particular emphasis on the Ashburton Gets Ready programme that had a public launch recently at the Hakatere Marae.

This programme is recognised by Civil Defence and is growing quickly in the Mid Canterbury area.

The number of households as at June 24, 2019 on the programme are 4929.

Residents are able to secure their contact details and any special needs, resources and skills they want to share, to help their local community look after each other in an emergency.

The programme will be used to share emergency warnings. These might include wind, snow, fire warnings, water quality warnings and fire rules, arriving as emails and/or texts.

This programme is in use in Christchurch, Selwyn, Te Awamutu, North Canterbury and now in Mid Canterbury.

As Neighbourhood Support aims to reduce crime and isolation through fostering connections between neighbours, it was decided the Gets Ready programme fits in very well with our needs.

Run and Walk Ashburton This week we celebrate one of our youngest members, Angel Spooner.

Angel recently represented Ashburton Intermediate at the Canterbury Primary Schools Cross Country.

Competing in the Year 8 girls’ age group over 3km Angel was placed 23rd out of a field of 186 in a time of 12 minutes 53 seconds. A fantastic result, congratulations Angel.

Our Saturday morning Early Birds were back to a super frosty start. Three regulars plus one new runner met at 7.30am, although a couple of the ladies managed an extra 9km in town before joining the others for the regular run down the river track.

Despite the colder temperatures that winter brings, starting the morning this way really does get the blood pumping.

Lori Rusbatch was our host of the afternoon meet.

Eight members travelled to Isleworth Settlement Road where they enjoyed a beautiful warm winter’s afternoon.

They covered 8.5km around the country roads before gathering for a lovely afternoon tea and a good chat.

Star ‘lost’ after injury NZME Damian McKenzie is practising patience.

Expected to be a key part of the All Blacks’ Rugby World Cup plans, the 24-year-old’s hope of World Cup glory was torn from his grasp early in the Super Rugby season.

McKenzie went down with a non-contact injury during the Chiefs’ round eight match against the Blues in April.

It was later announced he had ruptured his ACL and would face a recovery period of as long as nine months.

McKenzie revealed he felt lost in the immediate aftermath of the injury.

“It’s not fun, but it’s all part of it. It’s just the timing of the year – it could be any other year, but it had to be the World Cup year,” McKenzie said.

“The first few weeks I was a little bit lost. It felt weird not going to training on Monday, or playing in the weekend, but I guess age is on my side.

“If I was run down and on my last legs I’d maybe try to rush it or push it and find a way where I could get back

quicker, but it’s not something you want to rush and be an ongoing issue through the rest of your career. You look at it where, yeah it sucks but there are people in worse positions than I am.”

Being the first time he had suffered a serious injury during his career, it took some time for McKenzie to adjust.

Speaking about the injury, McKenzie voiced his frustration at how it happened.

“The way I did it, I don’t like looking back on it, to be honest; I’ve been in worse positions than that. I was just running, I didn’t even touch anyone, and it just went,” he recalled.

“You’re gutted for the timing because it’s such a big year … the first few weeks were pretty tough just watching and not being able to do much, but since I’ve had my surgery and gone into my rehab and stuff it’s kind of put it in a different perspective what it’s like to be injured.”

With McKenzie ruled out of the All Blacks picture for the rest of the year, Highlanders first five-eighth Josh Ioane was named in the first squad of the year

as the third No.10 as one of four debutants, alongside Crusaders duo Braydon Ennor and Sevu Reece, and Chiefs flanker Luke Jacobson.

Settling into his rehabilitation, McKenzie has ruled out a return during the Mitre 10 Cup season to give himself as much time as possible to get to full health for the 2020 Super Rugby season.

After spending the majority of his time at first five-eighth over the past two seasons, McKenzie said when he returned next season, he would be looking to move away from his permanent role in the No.10 jersey.

“I’ve come to the point where I enjoy 15 a lot more,” he admitted. “Ten’s good fun but you’re limited especially around attacking with a bit more freedom and space to 15. That’s something I just like doing – running around like a headless chook trying to find some space.

“I’m pretty keen, for next year, now to nail a spot at 15 and get some good game time there then, if I have to, play 10. I’ve come to the conclusion where it’s more 15-10 than 10-15.”

More drama from Kyrgios NZME Nick Kyrgios won a five-set thriller over fellow Australian Jordan Thompson in a first-round match at Wimbledon filled with remarkable drama and temper tantrums.

Locked at one-set apiece, the third set is where the major entertainment kicked off. Both players fumed over the officiating as crazy momentum shifts ensured nobody was leaving Court 3 before the end.

Having unsuccessfully tried to pull off several tweeners throughout the match, Kyrgios went for an underarm serve at set point in the third but Thompson dealt with it easily and they went to a tiebreak. That’s when things went bonkers.

Thompson accused the umpire of “having a shocker” when he was duped by a call that saw Kyr-

gios lie flat on his back in relief, then Kyrgios erupted and almost went on a lap of honour when he hit a scorching winner as the tension in the tiebreak escalated to extreme levels.

Kyrgios finally took advantage of his eighth set point to win the breaker 12-10. Aussie pro Thanasi Kokkinakis could only laugh, while plenty of other tennis fans struggled to comprehend the amazing scenes.

At one stage Kyrgios even called himself an “absolute lunatic”.

After the third set extravaganza, Kyrgios’s fortunes soon changed.

He imploded in the fourth set, dropping it 6-0 in just 18 minutes as the all-Aussie affair headed into a deciding fifth set.

It was smooth sailing from there as Kyrgios cruised through the fifth to secure a 7-6 3-6 7-6 0-6 6-1 victory.

It’s been a tough battle – Rore NZME Silver Ferns defender Katrina Rore admits the battle to overcome a calf injury to make the World Cup squad has been “tough”.

The Silver Ferns have opted to take both Rore and Michaela Sokolich-Beatson to England with a final decision on the make-up of the 12-strong Netball World Cup team still to be made.

Rore – who was ruled out of the recent Cadbury Netball Series due to a calf strain where she was replaced by fellow defender Sokolich-Beatson – says her injury is getting better every day.

Pacers point guard Darren Collison said he is walking away from basketball to focus on being a Jehovah’s Witness.

The 31-year-old was about to become an unrestricted free agent who would command about $NZ18m a season.

“While I still love basketball, I know there is something more important, which is my family and my faith,” Collison told ESPN in a letter.

“I am one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and my faith means everything to me. I receive so much joy from volunteering to help others

and participate in a worldwide ministry.

“The joy I feel is unmatched. With that being said, I have decided to retire from the NBA.” Pacers team-mate Myles Turner said: “I didn’t see this coming, but I’m happy for him.”

The New York Post said Collinson “shockingly announced he’s retiring”, and described the moves as being “from the back court to your front door”.

Collison has played for five NBA teams since 2009.

His letter stated: “I have always felt the need to do more to help others; that’s why it is so important to try and help out as much as possible.”

Championship round begins

When Mid Canterbury Netball’s third and final championship round gets under way tonight, the question on everyone’s lips will be whether anyone can stop a United A side on a roll.

United A is heading into the deciding round as the unexpected team to beat. They are the only team in premier to have maintained an unbeaten record so far this season, and the Claire Tappin coached side looks capable of keeping that streak going to the end.

But, this is the championship round, and it is anyone’s game.

The way this season has played out so far, it’d take a brave person to pick which sides will be there at the end, playing in the premier one grand final on an all inclusive finals day on Saturday, August 24.

Tonight, defending champions Celtic A will take on Hampstead A, while United A play Mt Somers, and College A take on a Methven A side that ensured they’ll see out the season in premier one with a win over Southern A on Tuesday night in the promotion/relegation game that awaited round two’s top premier two team and bottom premier one team.

To even be in that game was a fall from grace for the side that finished runner-up last season, and second in round one this season, but it was a sign of just how tough the competition was.

Last year’s champions Celtic A took out round one, but dropped two rare games in round two to finish third on the table, with United A finishing on top in their first foray back in the top flight after their disappointing loss in a promotion/relegation game a year ago.

Talking to some coaches they’ll tell you that round two didn’t mean a lot in the grand scheme of things, and they are right. The main thing in round two was do-

But, round two did teach us a few things this year. It showed us that Celtic A can be beaten, United A are well and truly back where they belong and a team to be feared, and that – in the case of Methven A – things can change a lot in the space of a few weeks.

Methven A went from runners-up in round one, to just scraping home by one goal

against Southern in Tuesday night’s promotion/relegation game.

One of the people most pleased to hear that news was probably Methven goal-shooter Leanne Clemens, who missed all of round two as she was overseas, but will return to the team partway through the championship round.

Her side didn’t have the best second round, but they showed

true grit and determination against Southern A on Tuesday, fighting back to take the win against a side that would probably dearly love to see the top premier grade return to the days of the eight-team format instead of six.

For the six teams that will contest this year’s premier one championship round, one thing is clear. It is going to be tight, and every point on the board will be

vital, so from the opening whistles tonight every team needs to be on form.

Down in premier two a disappointed Southern A will return to action tonight against Celtic B, while Ashburton College B will play Hampstead B, and Methven B will take on a Celtic C side which earned promotion to Thursday night netball with a win over Hampstead C in the promotion/ relegation games on Tuesday.

USA knock England out of World Cup in thriller NZME Alex Morgan celebrated her goahead goal with a cheeky tea-sipping celebration and Alyssa Naeher stopped a late penalty kick to send the United States into the final at the Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 victory over England on this morning.

The top-ranked United States will face the winner of tomorrow’s semifinal between the Netherlands and Sweden in the Americans’ third straight appearance in the World Cup title match.

Christen Press, who was in the starting line after Megan Rapinoe was left off, put the United States up

early in the match but Ellen White’s goal tied it before 20 minutes had passed.

Morgan’s sixth goal of the tournament came before the break — and on her 30th birthday.

She hadn’t had a goal since she scored five in the team’s 13-0 rout of Thailand to open the tournament.

It was also White’s sixth goal but Morgan has the edge for the tournament’s Golden Boot with three assists.

White appeared to score her seventh in the 69th minute but video review determined she was offside — and the Americans in the crowd of 53,512 at Stade de Lyon roared.

NZME Highlanders flanker Liam Squire has been applauded by All Blacks coach Steve Hansen for his ‘courageous’ decision to turn down a call-up to the All Blacks’ Rugby Championship squad.

Squire, battling with personal issues recently, has made himself unavailable for selection for the All Blacks’ 39-man squad for the opening matches of the Rugby Championship.

Seen as the All Blacks’ first-choice No. 6, the 28-year-old told Hansen that he didn’t feel like he was ready to pull on the black jersey.

“Mate, I don’t think I’m ready to play international football,” Hansen recalled of their conversation.

“I said ‘okay’, and we had a bit of a chat about that which I won’t repeat. At the end of it we agreed and I said ‘righto, that’s a pretty courageous conversation, well done, you get back on the park and play some footy and we’ll make a decision from there’.”

Squire, who has played 23 tests for the All Blacks, had earlier this season been a late withdrawal from the Highlanders’ clash against the Jaguares – and their resulting tour of South Africa – with what coach Aaron Mauger described as “personal family issues”.

That followed a rough run of injuries, which kept Squire out of Super Rugby for the majority of the season. A hip injury sidelined him for the opening month, and just as he was back into full training, he tore the medial ligament in his knee.

He returned to the Highlanders in time for the playoffs, putting in a superb performance in their playoff-clinching win over

If Squire is to return to the All Blacks environment ahead of the Rugby World Cup, it would be his final games in the black jersey, having signed a two-year deal to join Japanese club NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes after the Cup. The only other recent example of a player denying the selectors the chance to pick him in a black jersey is Brad Thorn, a lock who became an All Black great for his toughness and exploits during, among other tests, the 2011 World Cup final.

Thorn went from league in Australia to the Canterbury NPC team in 2001 and was picked for the All Blacks’ end of year tour but pulled out due to his uncertainty at whether he was fully committed to rugby union.

He ended up playing 59 tests for the All Blacks from 2003-11.

Methven A’s fight to remain in the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one competition came down to the final seconds of their promotion/relegation game with Southern A on Tuesday night.

With the scores locked at 23all with less than half a minute to go at the EA Networks Centre, a young shooter called up to the Methven A side from the Methven Bs, Emma-Lake Hill, found herself in the position of either landing the goal that would win it for her side, or missing and sending the game into overtime.

A penalty had been called,

meaning Hill’s shot would be the last act of the game.

The pressure was on but the youngster calmly put the ball up and through the hoop to give her side the win 24-23.

Methven A coach Maree Firth said she was incredibly proud of the effort her girls produced to ensure they’d be there for the third and final championship round of premier one, after failing to win a game in round two.

“I said before the game that we had put ourselves there and it was up to us to get ourselves out of it, and we earned our spot,” Firth said.

“I think the belief grew during the game, too, that we could take

this.” Both sides knew they’d be in for a right battle heading into the match, with Methven A not wanting to drop out of the premier one competition they’d finished runners-up in last season, and Southern A desperate to win their way out of premier two and back into the top flight where they started last season.

Right from the opening exchanges there wasn’t much in it.

Southern held a slender 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and got out to a three-goal lead in the second, only for Methven A to come back with five straight goals of their own to lead by two, but by half-time it was anyone’s game again at 14-all.

Southern just had the edge in the third quarter, putting Methven under a lot of pressure throughout the court, and as a result Southern held a 20-18 lead at three quarter time.

Methven were never going to roll over though, fighting their way back to draw even at 22-all with three minutes to go in a hard-fought quarter where goals were proving hard to come by.

It remained 22-all until the final minute, where Methven went up by one only for Southern to hit back and tie it up again.

From there Methven had the next centre pass and there was just 20 seconds on the clock

While there were celebrations in the Methven A camp, there was disappointment in the Southern A camp.

“But they played out of their skins and you can’t ask for any more than that,” Southern A coach Alice Keir said.

They’d been dominant in premier two this season, and showed that they could be a force in premier one, too.

But, for now Southern A would have to turn their attention back to premier two and claiming that title, before again eyeing up a return to premier one in 2020.
