New major at the pipe band helm

Invercargill for the 2020 NZ Pipe Band Championships. As this was the first national competition the band had competed in for 15 years, they turned out in the 4b entry level class.

“We didn’t get a placing in the contest, but we learnt a lot and really enjoyed being there,” said Terry.

Like anything, when a group of like-minded people who share a common interest get together, the good times roll.

“We have a good crew who all get on well. The social side leads to the band going well.”

Going forward Terry and Doak both agree they want to grow the profile of the band in the local community.

Covid-19 lockdown put an end to their full Anzac Day plans, but not wanting the day to pass without the sound of bagpipes hanging in the air, a number of members took to their driveways at 11am and played Amazing Grace.

The next planned outing is at the Ashburton A&P Show in October, they then move on to competing at the Hororata Highland Games the following week.

Terry gets nervous before public performances or competitions, but as he sees it, nerves are a good sign.

“If you don’t get nervous then you don’t care enough,” he said.

While the band is in good shape, Terry said they are always looking for new members to join.

Experienced members offer free tuition for beginner pipers and drummers looking to see if it is for them. Instruments are also supplied, he said.

“The cultural heritage surrounding a pipe band is something quite special.”

Five years ago the Ashburton Pipe and was in recess, now thanks to some hard work from Peter Doak and Derek Cullimore, the band boasts 20 pipers, 10 drummers and, as of a month ago, a new pipe major, Leighton Terry.

Doak, pipe major since the band reformed, made the decision to focus more on his band manager’s job and hand the reins over to someone new.

Originally from Gore, Leighton is no stranger to Scottish music.

He was 10 when he first picked up the bagpipes, played with the now defunct Gore Pipe Band for years and is also an accomplished competitive highland dancer, taking out the National Seann Truibhas dance title in 2017.

It was his relationship with pipe band music that appealed to Doak and his fellow band members when they were casting their eyes around for a pipe major.

Doak said when Leighton came walking through the door, they all sensed his successor had been found.

In order to lead pipers and teach them new tunes, you need to have deep understanding to the music and know how to teach and Terry ticked all the boxes, said Doak.

Leighton’s instructional ability comes from his years of teaching highland dancers to primary and secondary age students.

“At the moment I am working for the Julie Hawke School of dance, teaching around 20 Ashburton students.”

Late bid to fast track Ashburton projects fails

A bid to have two major work projects in the Ashburton District included in the government’s fast track consents process have fallen on deaf ears.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon made a pitch for Ashburton’s second urban bridge and for the four-laning of State Highway One between Ashburton and Christchurch, to be included in the group of national projects that will be winners under the Covid-19, fast-track consenting bill.

The bill went through Parliament on Thursday night under urgency.

It included 11 infrastructure projects with the majority in the North Island. His effort to have two Ashburton projects put on the list was voted down, Falloon said.

“Unfortunately none of their proposed roading or rail upgrades were in the Canterbury region, so I proposed two additions to the legislation, fast tracking the completion of a four-lane highway from Ashburton to Christchurch and a second bridge over the Ash-

burton River,” he said.

Data showed that the road between Ashburton and Christchurch was the second most dangerous in New Zealand for fatalities and serious injuries, Falloon said.

“The Waikato Expressway and Tauranga Eastern Link, four-lane highways constructed by the previous National Government haven’t had a fatality in their first three years in operation but in the same period, the road between Ashburton and Christchurch has had 10.”

The fast track consent bill is designed to help rebuild the economy after the Covid-19 pandemic by creating more than 1200 jobs.

It is intended a second wave of projects will also be considered.

Under the provisions of the bill, the resource consenting process will take between 45 and 70 working days instead of the normal four to six months and that will see some of the approved projects start one to two years sooner than planned.

The fast track law, however, will * be short-term and will self-repeal in two years.

Ruralco Instore Days tracking well

There might not be the normal giant marquee, huge crowds or hot lunch, but Ruralco’s Instore Days are proving to be just as successful with Covid-enforced changes.

For the past 25 years, the Ashburton-based farmer co-operative has run its popular Instore Days through its three retail outlets in Methven, Rakaia and Ashburton, offering significant discounts to its farmer shareholders.

While the retail outlets are still open, the large facilites normally set up for the instore days not, with the focus of the event shifting online thanks to the Covid-19 lockdown.

A whole separate online store has been set up for the event, with the company adopting a large online marketing strategy and dropping catalogues to every rural mailbox in the South Island.

“That was all me and my team were doing during lockdown, setting everything up as we had no idea what was going to happen,” Ruralco marketing manager Izania Downie said.

Ninety suppliers signed on for this

year’s event, down from around 100 at last year’s event, with many reporting just as good, if not better, sales than previous years.

The Instore Days countdown kicked off on June 1 with every $250 spent with Ruralco Instore Days participating suppliers from then to July 8 enabling members to enter the draw to win a new Ford Mustang car.

Any purchases made using the Ruralco card at any of the 90 participating Instore Days suppliers throughout the country will also qualify for the draw.

Downie said the different format for the event had throw up a few benefits, with a steady flow of customers visiting throughout the day instead of the usual rush between 10am and 2pm.

Having the event over a more extended period means they will also be open for the Instore Days for the first time on a Saturday from 9am unitl midday.

It was smiles and honey sandwiches all round at Radius Millstream yesterday, when Mid Canterbury Plunket held a teddy bears’ picnic at the rest home.

Plunket community services co-ordinator Sue-ann Carr said Plunket visits the rest home twice a month and try to have a different theme each time.

Past visits have seen the Plunket mothers arrive armed with playdough and bubble machines for sensory play mornings.

Carr said the morning they teamed up with the Ashburton toy library and filled the lounge colourful toys was a fun time.

“Today is our second visit since lockdown so we are holding a teddy bears’ picnic to celebrate.”

Carr said there is a plan from within Plunket to get away from simply weighting babies, handing out advice and filling in Plunket books and move more into the

public eye more. It’s about identifying gaps in the community and helping to fill them.

“All parents and babies are welcome to come along, you don’t have to be part of Plunket to join in the fun.”

Carr and her buddies have been visiting the residents for three years now. She said some of the mums have been coming since the beginning. It is great for the residents to see the children growing up, she said.

“Many of them love a cuddle with the babies. Especially those whose own grandchildren live out of town. The mums are always nice and relaxed here too.”

Mother of four-year-old Tama and oneyear-old Shane, Lizzie Pirika, said coming to see the residents at the rest home is appreciated by her and her two boys.

“I don’t have grandparents alive anymore, so coming here fills that gaps,” she said.

In brief Dairy Holdings sale Ashburton-based Dairy Holdings, New Zealand’s biggest corporate dairy farmer, has sold a 24.9 per cent stake to a Canadian pension fund. The company was previously 100 per cent New Zealand owned.

Dairy Holdings’ 59 dairy farms are all in the South Island and predominantly in Mid and Central Canterbury, with a herd of 50,000 milking cows producing around 17 million kilograms of milksolids a year. It is Fonterra’s largest supplier and shareholder. Its new shareholder Sooke Investments, is owned by Canadian state-owned Public Sector Pension Investment Board. Two New Zealand farming families retain the predominant shareholding, dairy farmers Colin and Dale Armer, of Tauranga, and Murray and Margaret Turley, of Temuka, South Canterbury, largescale potato, onion and arable growers.

Growing a new church family

Brendan and Amy Abernethy have one family, but they’re keen to start another, much larger, family – the Ashburton campus of the Grace Vineyard Church.

The couple and their two children, Josiah and Lily, moved back to Ashburton three years ago and since then have been working towards establishing a campus of the church that is very much a part of their lives.

They’re planning to have the church established in Ashburton next year and are gathering people who want to be part of the new mission.

Grace Vineyard has been es-

tablished in Christchurch for many years and has campuses around New Zealand. It’s a church that’s all about people, all about families, pastor Brendan says.

“It’s about people and gathering people together and about finding and meeting the needs of our community, not just going to church.”

Both Brendan and Amy grew up in Christian homes and, while they may have drifted away from church attendance as young adults, their faith has always been strong, Amy said.

Over the years they’ve had friends involved in the church, some who were youth leaders or

pastors, and that laid the foundations for their own involvement in Grace Vineyard.

“We’ve always had an active faith rather than this being a massive conversion. And when we found Vineyard it felt like home, it’s a great fit,” she said.

As a man who grew up in Ashburton and attended Ashburton College, it was exciting to be coming home and establishing a church on home patch as a church-funded pastor, Brendon said.

He describes the church as being strong on families and family values and having a strong emphasis on relationships. It’s a church that is strong on social

action. It’s a modern church.

“We’re a place people can go and really feel they belong. Our church is designed to be fun, so kids go to church and think it’s fun, that God is a fun God. It’s a fresh take on church,” he said.

The numbers interested in being part of that church are growing and while that group was meeting regularly as awareness grows, Brendan is confident they will attract more faith seekers.

On July 21 the Abernethys will be holding a public gathering where people can come, share a coffee and chat. The event will be held at 7.30pm in EAT Cafe at the EA Networks Centre.

There have been no new cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand reported yesterday. There remain 18 active cases in New Zealand. It is the third day this week that there have been zero cases, although two new cases were reported in managed isolation yesterday. The total number of confirmed cases remains at 1180, with confirmed and probable cases combined totalling 1530.

One person remains in Auckland City Hospital in a stable condition and one significant cluster remains open, but is due to close on Monday.

Alpacas attack An attack on four alpacas in North Canterbury has left local animal management staff perplexed over whether it was carried out by a dog or a person. The four alpacas were in a paddock in the township of Waikari, when they were fatally injured between 28 and 29 June.

Three of the alpacas were found dead with head injuries and a fourth, with severe injuries, had to be put down. Hurunui District Council chief operating officer Dan Harris said it was unclear how the injuries were caused. He said the three alpacas had head injuries and had lost flesh from their skulls, and the fourth alpaca, which initially survived the attack, had a badly mauled jaw.

Council hands out $1.2m in grants round More than $1.2 million has been poured into the Mid Canterbury community through a grants programme that will benefit 55 community groups and organisations.

The funding boost is part of the Ashburton District Council’s community grants and funding scheme and those grants have been made across nine categories.

For the council, the scheme is a way of helping local groups deliver projects and services that will have wide benefits across the district, Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said.

Those grants made a huge difference in getting communityled programmes off the ground,

The funding will be used to support a variety of initiatives, including purchasing new sports equipment, planting native plant species, repairing community facilities, buying construction materials for new disability toilets, running school holiday programmes and building a mountain bike beginner skills area.

A big winner was Forest and Bird, Ashburton branch, with a $34,900 grant for management costs of Low’s Cutting reserve.

The Ashburton Community Conservation Trust got $7500 for production of a film promoting wetlands and Cleardale Station was also given $7500 for weed control.

A total of $56,000 was given in biodiversity grants.

Eleven groups received community project grants, totalling $28,610 and three community events grants totalling $8660.

In the community infrastructure grant section, $65,000 was given away to 10 groups, with four of those receiving $8000.

The Ashburton Motorcycle Club will use its grant for track building and fencing at Ashton Beach, the Methven Recreation Reserve Board for a new lawnmower, lawn edging and levelling.

The Mt Hutt Memorial Hall will use their grant for new seating and the Wakanui Hall Society for new curtains for their supper

Heritage grants were made to two projects, the Somerton Trust to waterproof a cottage and Thurlow Investments for building strengthening work.

Five school holiday programmes received a total of $5000 in grants and a grant of $60,000 was made to the Canterbury West Coast Sports Trust.

The district’s community libraries received a total of $12,800 in grants with the Ashburton Art Gallery receiving $385,000 towards its operating costs and the Ashburton Trust Event Centre $298,000.

Twelve community agencies were given a share of $291,450 in grants.

The Ashburton SPCA’s snip ‘n’ chip campaign has been a success once again, with vouchers for heavily subsidised de-sexing of cats and dogs selling out in days.

Centre manager Rebecca Dobson said the dog vouchers had sold out in a couple of days, with the cat vouchers selling out a few days after that.

“It was really successful, there were queues outside the centre on the first day,” she said.

“There is obviously a bit of a need out in the community for it.”

The programme, which is subsidised by the SPCA and supported by a number of local vets, means it costs only $30 to get a dog de-sexed and microchipped, or $20 for a cat.

Dobson said they had de-sexed more than 300 animals through the scheme so far and were looking at it as their main prevention tool as the organisation looks to move away from being an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

“If someone has two cats who both have litters of five that is then 12 cats that person has to feed and that is a lot of pressure for a lot of people,” she said.

“One of the best prevention things we can do is to help people de-sex their animals.

“We are trying to get ourselves as the ambulance at the top of the cliff and educate people about de-sexing animals and we can then prevent a tidal wave of unwanted animals.”

Dobson said local vets have been reporting a significant drop in unwanted animals since the programme was first launched.

“It shows it really does work and, if we can keep doing it consistently, it will help to reduce unwanted litters,” she said.

They are also launching the programme in Timaru, and Dobson said they will be doing a big promotion campaign which has been receiving positive feedback already.

Call for borders to reopen RNZ Three influential New Zealand figures are urging the government to consider reopening the borders, and abandon a strategy of totally eliminating the Covid-19 virus.

The former chief science advisor Sir Peter Gluckman, former prime minister Helen Clark and ex-Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe say an extended delay in opening the borders will cause huge damage to the country’s economy and social wellbeing, and it’s now time to change the goals.

The current quarantine and testing processes are “ineffective” and could “come to haunt” the country if they are not replaced, they warn. And they should be replaced with more efficient and aggressive processes, which can cope with higher volumes of people coming in.

The trio joined forces to co-author a conversation paper released yesterday, Re-engaging New Zealand with the World, with expert input from epidemiologist Sir David Skegg and digital contact tracing expert Dr Andrew Chen.

Speaking to Morning Report, Gluckman said planning for the future has become bogged down in an unhelpful shift to New Zealand’s goals after the country went into lockdown – from trying to ‘flatten the curve’ of the numbers infected with the virus at any one time, to complete elimination.

“Nobody is saying open the borders today ... but at some time in the near future

we have to have a strategy in place of gradually opening the border, because we cannot [keep it closed] indefinitely,” he said.

The trio note Sir David Skegg’s advice to the government Epidemic Committee that many epidemiologists accept “very low level” transmission within the definition of elimination.

“It is unrealistic to imagine that there’ll never be cases of Covid in New Zealand. It’s just logically inevitable,” Gluckman said. “[Skeggs] made it clear that elimination meant reducing it to a predetermined low level – well we’ve done that, and we need to keep on doing that.

“The vaccine’s still a long way away, there’s no guarantee the vaccine will be complete coverage, some people will not accept the vaccine, and few vaccines are 100 per cent protective. We can’t sit here forever without thinking about the future.”

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said New Zealand’s borders will not be closed indefinitely, and work is under way to eventually lift some restrictions.

That will only happen when it is safe, she said.

When asked by reporters when she anticipated it would be, Ardern said it was a question better suited for scientists.

“Will they [border restrictions] be here forever? Well, actually when we have development of vaccines, treatment, reliable quick turn around testing, all of that will change the future scenario for our border,” Ardern said.

Living with Marfan Syndrome Heart Kids is a support organisation that provides a lifeline for thousands of Kiwi families. One of those is Ashburton family Jason, Kylie and Kayin Moore, who live with the shadow of Marfan Syndrome over their lives. They share their heart disease journey with reporter Sue Newman.

T

here’s an awful lot of love and laughter in the Moore family’s home, but behind that cosy family picture lurks a genetic disease that unless well managed can wreck lives.

That disease is Marfan Syndrome and it runs strongly through Jason’s family – his grandfather, his father, his sister, Jason himself and now it lives in the body of 13-year-old Kayin.

It affects the body’s connective tissue and that means it can affect many different parts of the body, but for Jason and Kayin, Marfans makes itself felt in their aortic valve and in their body shape – long arms and legs, tall and thin frame, long, thin fingers, a chest that is either markedly convex or concave and in Kayin’s case, curvature of the spine.

One thing it does not affect is intelligence and the ability to enjoy life to the full.

Kayin’s Marfan journey began when he was a toddler. At birth he appeared to be a normal, healthy baby, mum Kylie said.

But the couple knew that the symptoms of Marfan, while not obvious in childhood, could appear later in life. Jason was a living example of that. While his body shape was typical of the syndrome and his chest had a pronounced bulge his health issues did not make themselves felt until he was in his late teens and at 23 he would undergo surgery to replace his aortic valve.

Other than not taking part in contact sports and the need to take daily medication, operation behind him, Jason was back out there, living a restriction-free life.

He was lucky. His sister was not. She lived life to the full, but died in her early 20s. His father

Kylie, Kayin and Jason Moore might live with Marfan’s Syndrome, but it doesn’t define who they are as a family. collapsed and died at 40. And now the family believes that his grandfather, who also collapsed and died, also had the syndrome.

Today, families where Marfan is a known genetic factor are carefully monitored and for Kayin that monitoring started in early childhood.

“We knew there was a chance he’d have it so we had tests done and eventually they came back positive and then from the age of two or three we started to see some signs,” Kylie said.

Those early signs were a markedly sunken chest and a spine that was becoming increasingly curved. And it was his spinal curve that would colour life for the family for several years as Kayin underwent a series of operations – 12 in total.

None of that dimmed Kayin’s smile or changed his happy dis-

position. He simply dealt with whatever his health handed him and got on with life.

“He’s never complained, he’s the most uncomplaining person I’ve ever met,” Kylie said.

He’s now had a spinal fusion that should see an end to that string of operations, but he knows there is more surgery lurking in the future, probably an aortic valve replacement and most likely an operation to expand his chest to ensure it does not compress his lungs.

They’re waiting to hear from their cardiologist but hope surgery can be stalled until he’s well into his teens and has finished growing.

Kayin is philosophical about the need for major surgery down the track. With a few years spent in a brace and 12 stints in the operating theatre already behind him, he’s no stranger to hospital

stays. Next time however, he’s a bit disappointed cardiac surgery will mean a trip to Auckland rather than to familiar territory in Dunedin.

Amazingly, the 12 surgeries on his back to insert rods to help straighten his spine, are dismissed by Kayin as nothing.

“I was fine. I love hospitals and I loved the children’s ward,” he said.

The only time he came close to complaining was during the car journeys home when every bump in the road jolted his back.

The long journey through repeated back surgery has not wiped the smile off Kayin’s face and it hasn’t dampened his sunny disposition. Having a bit of a wonky back is just part of life, but it isn’t his life, he said.

To his friends he’s just Kayin, not Kayin with Marfans. Life is as normal as it gets in the Moore family.

His chances of becoming a Marfan kid were high; two out of three children with a gene-carrying parent are likely to get the syndrome.

And as the syndrome has become more widely acknowledged, support groups have developed.

When Jason went through his surgery he initially felt very alone, but said he was lucky to find others he could share his health issues with. He’s part of a group of about 15 who keep in regular contact.

Kayin, Jason and Kylie say they have been incredibly well supported from day one by Heart Kids team and today they’re actively involved in the organisation, raising funds and giving back to support others who are travelling similar heart journeys.

Heart Kids provide support and caring F or more than 30 years the Heart Kids organisation has been walking alongside families with a child affected by heart disease.

And for families like Jason, Kylie and Kayin Moore, the support that organisation provides is invaluable. For them Heart Kids has become a whole lot more, it has become an important part of their lives and they’re now involved in the South Canterbury branch as committee members.

When Kayin’s Marfan Syndrome was confirmed, the Heart Kids team were quick to come on board with support and they’ve now been involved with the Timaru group’s network for 10 years.

When you are coming to terms with a heart disease diagnosis for your child, talking to someone who has been on the same journey is life saving, Kylie said.

“We all have something in common, they’re just wonderful,” she said.

There are regular outings, events and residential camps for heart children and they’ve meant Kayin has made friends who share

similar health issues. The organisation does not receive government funding and Kylie and Jason say they now want to do their part in giving something back by helping with its community fundraising programme.

They’re currently on the organising team for Heart Kids Timaru fundraiser, the Jingle Bell Ball. It’s planned for November 21 in the Timaru Bay Hall and last year was a sell-out event.

They’re hoping to expand the Heart Kids network to Ashburton.

Twelve babies a week are born in New Zealand with a congenital heart defect – that’s one in every 100 births.

Heart Kids has a network of trained support workers who feel passionate about our heart kids, teens, adults and their families. Currently it supports more than 8500 children and their families.

The support network was founded in 1980

by Linda Davies and Michelle Mann who met at Greenlane Hospital when their newborn babies were suffering from major heart problems. They realised there was very little

information available for parents of a heart child, so they decided to write a book.

After leaving hospital Linda and Michelle spent a great deal of time researching and speaking with other families with a heart child. In 1983 the book Heart Children was published and made available free to parents of children who had a heart condition.

They soon soon found themselves acting in a much-needed support role to other families going through Greenlane Hospital. Over a period of time, as families returned to their own part of New Zealand, a network of support groups was established.

This network was co-ordinated by the Auckland group who formalised themselves as Heart Children Incorporated in 1984.

The organisation has continued to grow and with advancements in medical and surgical techniques, more adults are living with a congenital heart defect (CHD) than children.

For this reason, help and support was extended to heart children throughout their lives.

In 2014, the organisation changed its name to Heart Kids New Zealand.

What is Marfan Syndrome

M

arfan Syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue, tissue that holds the body’s cells, organs and tissues together.

It pays an important role in helping the body grow and develop property and is made up of proteins, with the one playing a role in Marfan Syndrome called fibrillin-1.

Marfan Sydrome occurs when there is a defect or mutation in the gene that tells the body how to make fibrillin-1.

Marfan Syndrome can affect many different parts of the body and features of the disorder are most often found in the heart, blood vessels, bones, joints and eyes.

Some of its features, such as aortic enlargement, can be life threatening, but on of the positive features of Marfans is that it does not affect intelligence.

About one in 5000 people have Marfan and about three out of four of those will inherit the syndrome.

It can also occur as a spontaneous mutation.

There is a 50 per cent chance that a person with Marfan will pass the genetic mutation on each time they have a child.

A person with Marfans will be born with the syndrome but features of the condition are not always immediately present.

Some people have many of the syndrome’s features at birth or as young children but others have fewer features and don’t develop aortic enlargement or other signs until they are adults.

Because many of the features can get worse with time, it is important people with Marfan Syndrome and related conditions receive accurate, early diagnosis and treatment.

Marfan Syndrome is named after Antoine Marfan, the French doctor who first described the disorder in 1896.

Thousands receive multiple payouts

RNZ More than 40,000 people have received wage subsidy payouts from more than one employer – with several hundred people getting the payout from four employers or more.

The Government’s wage subsidy scheme has helped cover nearly 1.7 million jobs, at a cost of nearly $11.9 billion.

But that payout does not cover 1.7 million people – with tens of thousands of people working in multiple jobs receiving multiple payouts.

Information released to RNZ’s Checkpoint shows 42,200 people have been paid out by two employers – 2200 had three employers, and 364 employees were linked to four employers or more.

Many of those instances involved one or more part-time jobs.

Unite Union national secretary Gerard Hehir said the figures showed how many New Zealanders needed more than one job to get by.

He said there would be lots of

people with part-time businesses who have been hit hard.

“A lot of people want to work 40 hours – or even more sometimes – but the jobs that they can get simply don’t allow for that to happen.”

The wage subsidy was paid directly to eligible employers at a flat rate of $585.80 for people working 20 hours or more per week, and $350 for anyone working less than 20 hours per week.

The New Zealand Rugby Union has confirmed its players, who are

employees of both New Zealand Rugby and the Provincial Unions, received the full-time rate from both organisations.

In a statement, New Zealand Rugby head of professional rugby Chris Lendrum said its players were like thousands of New Zealanders who work for different employers across a variety of industries.

“In their case, they are employees of both New Zealand Rugby and the Provincial Unions, and all

organisations were eligible to apply for the Government wage subsidy. Our applications have been guided by and approved by the Ministry of Social Development.”

A tax specialist with Dunedin firm Findex, Scott Mason, said even receiving multiple payouts, it was unlikely people profited from the scheme.

“It’s possible that at an individual level, there might be people who got $50 more a week than they would’ve otherwise, simply because there were two lots of wage subsidy being paid to them by two employers – but that’s absolutely at the margins.

“For the vast majority of the 42,000 odd people that received it from two employers, the $585 times two is probably less than they would’ve [received] otherwise.”

Independent tax researcher Dr Michael Gousmett, who has raised concerns about how the wage subsidy scheme has operated, said some payouts may require a closer look.

CLUB NEWS Ashburton Creative Fibre The opportunity to meet again after the lockdown saw a large gathering of our members at The Plains Museum recently.

The programme asked that the entries for the planned Exhibition be received so Shireen and Nicole from the Art Gallery could see what was available and to select their choice of articles for display (tentatively booked for August/September). There was a very large selection of articles entered, covering all areas of our members interestsspinning, dyeing, weaving, felting and crochet to name a few.

Pam the Co-chairperson welcomed everyone and asked the members if the idea of that our 50th Jubilee Birthday follow our AGM in October be practical in our condensed programme for this year. It will be fully discussed at our next meeting on July 20 at 10am. Timing to be AGM at 1.30pm and birthday 2pm. On October 19 at the Plains Museum.

Lockdown provided a perfect opportunity for everyone to lower their ‘Stash’ and Patricia counted and displayed the results for show and tell. Pam showed what she had completed for this year’s challenge of what can be made from a 3½kg corridale fleece while Beath displayed a knitted throw made from the fleece of a yearling pet lamb.

Ashburton Dahlia Cricle The AGM and wind up for the season was held at Jackie and Frank Ryan’s home on Sunday, June 21.

So good to be back to continue with our season finally, missing April and May meetings. But great to have a catch up and enjoy a lovely afternoon meeting. Brian Glassey presided over the monthly and AGM meetings 14 members attending and six apologies received.

Brian read his annual report for the 2019/20 season with special thanks to Alison for her very capable administration of secretarial and finances for members. A very successful tuber stall at the farmers’ market in October, again helped raise funds for the club events. Mention of the National Show in February, held in Timaru where five members exhibited, the Annual Combined Show with Christchurch was a highlight with our neighbours and held in the Tinwald Memorial Hall in March.

It is with regret that a resignation was received from Rex and Pat Tarbotton. They have been valuable members of the group and wish them well in their new home at Rosebank Villas. A small gift was given in appreciation of their time with us. Graham Gunn was nominated as our patron again.

Graham then took the chair for election of officers. Graham thanked Brian for his enthusiasm for the club.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions President Lion Noel Lowe welcomed a large turnout of members and several visitors to the June Meeting of the Pakeke Lions Club.

Lion Graeme Neale read the apologies and clipboards with regard to Meals on Wheels were circulated.

Marion Martin said grace. President Noel read a tribute to late member Lion Ted Bird who passed away after serving 35 years with the Pakeke Club. He was a valued member and both he and his wife the late Pamela will be sadly missed. Lion Barry Bluet thanked members for their support after the recent passing of his wife Rose.

Ashburton Golf Club The grey clouds did not dampen the golfers’ spirits last Saturday, a big field still turned up and luckily the rain held off. Two big finals were played in the President’s Trophy and Plate. In the main game Steve McCloy jumped out of the blocks with shots on 1 and 3 to get an early lead, but then Captain Terry got his driver dialled in, his irons and putter followed suit, and he finished up taking a very good win on the 16th. In the Plate, Paddy jumped out winning the first two holes but then Blair Franklin showed

growing up in the country.

Two new members, John Ramsey and Malcolm McCormick, who were inducted during lockdown, received their official certificates and vadges. John and Malcom were welcomed into the club along with their wives Pam and Gail.

These two new members, along with new member Colin Crossen, were then asked a series of questions by their various sponsors who were very informative and it was most interesting hearing about their lives to date.

Lion Jim Martin reported that he had attended the Rededication Ceremony recently held in Mosgiel. This meeting had been held over due to the cancellation of the District Convention, at which two of our recently deceased members Lion

Sorry stories of how he used to be a contender but had a poorly hip, and before Blair knew it he was shaking hands on the 17th thinking, what the hell just happened there. Afterwards in the club the big lad was heard saying that he reckons the President’s Plate is actually one of the hardest cups to win and should really be on the honours board.

Player of the day in the stroke round was Brendon Davidson, who shot a superb 73 off a 6 handicap, to pick up the spoils. The 14th hole almost gave up its second hole in one in a week, with Tom Blacklow’s approach sitting on the edge of the cup, staring down but too scared to jump in.

He then managed to stick a ball out of bounds on 15 just to top it off.

This Saturday we have the 3rd round of club champs qualifying. Stroke off the blue tees. With only four rounds this year and the second round being the big downpour, when not many played, this should be a wellattended day.

On Sunday we have Pennants at Tinwald and Rakaia. I think a couple of the teams are on the hunt for new players, so if anyone

Ashburton MSA Golf section Well, there is a saying “Quality is more important than Quanity” and luckily that was the case when only six members of the golf section travelled to the Weedons course last month to take on Kaiapoi who arrived with 15 players to compete for the annual trophy.

With the course having a lot of trees and one par 5 measuring 541 metres good scoring was hard to come by.

Ashburton managed to retain the trophy with an average stableford of 32 compared to Kaiapoi’s 30.875 which might of been just as well since the trophy was still sitting in the trophy cabinet back in Ashburton.

Top scorers for the MSA were Judy Webb 37, Steve Stratford 37, with Roger Irvine and Steve Thomas both on 32.

Steve Stratford and Nigel Cartwright shared the two’s prize money and Roger Irvine picked up the chocolate for closet to the pin.

Our next game is on July 12 at Tinwald.

CLUB NEWS Ashburton Toastmasters Club The Ashburton Toastmasters Club meeting on the 24th June started with its AGM where the following members were elected onto the Committee: President: Phil Wheeler, Treasurer: Coby Snowden, VP Membership: Mariana Gorra, VP Public Relations: Adi Avnit, VP Education: Matthew Marshall, Sergeant-at-Arms: Chiyo Hunt.

The Club had a successful year with high level of achievement among its members.

The Club then proceeded with its usual fortnightly meeting by a presentation by Mike Johnson and Adi Avnit on Toastmaster’s Pathways programme, with a half-hour explanation on the purpose and benefits of the online learning guide. Chiyo devised a unique way to run the Table Topics session whereby volunteers drew 3 random words out of a bag with which they then had to tell a story. The result was a lot of laughs hearing what Robin came up with ‘Land, Mickey Mouse and Roof ‘, Coby with ‘Doctor, Lick and Plan’, Adi with ‘Knitting, Anniversary and Mr Bean’. Our guest Neysa managed to expertly weave her three words into an introduction to herself to the members.

Throughout the evening several members managed to incorporate the Grammarian’s Word of the Evening (Compassion) into their speeches and evaluations.

The next meeting will be held at the Doris Linton Lounge at the RSA on July 8th 7.30pm, all new members are welcome.

Ashburton Woodworkers Bruce Ferriman welcomed the 20 members to the clubs AGM after a three month lay off and pleased that we are able to make use of the clubrooms facilities. Bruce mentioned some of the clubs achievements including the façade in keeping with the other surrounding buildings. The gifting of an Ellis lathe. The treasurer reported that the finances of the club appears healthy.

Age Concern Ashburton At Age Concern we are delighted to have reinstated services and welcomed back our valued clients following the lifting of lockdown restrictions. It was lovely to see the smiling faces around the room as 206 Club participants were once again able to enjoy their activities and social interaction.

The exercise groups are also underway this week; courtesy drivers are available, as is Total

Mobility assessment – all enquiries welcomed at the office 3086817.

During the lockdown weeks our staff members were working from home where one of their major commitments was to maintain contact ensuring the well being of clients and all older persons needing support. Our Secretary/Manager Dianna Leonard took over 150 calls covering a wide range of enquiries about support available to individuals and households, as well as ongoing communication with other organisations such as Civil Defence, Police, MSD, Presbyterian Support., Age Concern National Office, Age Concern Canterbury, Waitaha Health, Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury and Advance Ashburton. Zoom meetings were another vital link in the chain of communication.

Likewise, Director of Day Services Adair Pethig had a very full phoning schedule over the 13 weeks of non activity maintaining contact with 206 Club members and dealing with referrals. An estimated 480 communications took place over this time. A similar situation for the coordinator of our Steady As You Go falls prevention programme, who enlisted the support of peer leaders from the 8 classes throughout the district, to maintain contact with participants.

The Executive Committee wish to acknowledge the huge input from our staff over this difficult and often very stressful time.

We thank them on behalf of all who benefited from their time, care and compassion.

We are at present gathering data from the many people who have lost home help services in recent weeks. If this has happened to you, you are welcome to contact us on 3086817.

Ashburton Strollers’ Club There were four strolls held early in the year to Dashing Rocks at Timaru, Victoria Park in Christchurch, Birdlings Flat and Harts Creek.

From early April, all strolls were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but fortunately were able to restart in mid-May. The first walk was from Lake Heron to Mellish Stream on a beautiful sunny autumn day. An extra stroll to Lake Clearwater was slotted in at the end of May. In early June there was a stroll to Rangiatea, with two walking options to meet up at the farm recreational hut for lunch. Later we were invited to view the agate and jewellery collection which was very impressive.

A stroll on the Rakaia Walkway took place on Wednesday, June 10, and on Sunday, June 21 there was an additional walk on the Waikari Hills Station to the Rangitata River opposite the Rangitata Diversion Race inlet.

The next stroll on Sunday, July 5 is to Godley Head from Taylors Mistake, and on Wednesday, July 8 there is a walk around Ashburton, taking in some of the lesser known areas. The first stroll in August is to Centennial Park and Otipua Creek in Timaru, and in the middle of the month there is a walk around some of the Christchurch highlights There is a club night and annual general meeting on Tuesday, August 4, when Hildegard O’Brien will talk about her overseas travels.

Strolls are held on the first Sunday and second Wednesday of the month, usually departing from the courthouse at 8.30am, and new walkers are always welcome to join in.

Hinds Women’s Institute Eleven members met for the first time since lock-down at St Luke’s Church Hall at Hinds, it being the month for the winter mini show.

President Mrs Annette Simister led in the singing of the Ode and recitation of the Aspirations following a warm welcome.

A couple of apologies, but no-one being unwell is good news.

The business consisted of routine matters: Birthright were the recipient of 22 books from Hinds WI, the finance situation is looking good, money was sent for the bushfires in Australia and raffles run by Mid Canterbury Federation, helped by Hinds members at the time, were cut short by the level four lockdown.

It is still uncertain times for the National Executive in planning for major events.

Minutes from what seemed like way-back, were read, and two virtual meetings held in April and May were discussed when members rang each other holding a cup of tea in one hand.

Much better to meet in person again.

Betty read a short profile on a member’s

eventful years to go with an updated history of the WI organisation.

Judge Michelle Sheppard was welcomed and taken to where the competition entries were displayed. After providing her comments she was thanked and presented with a gift.

Birthday honours were accorded to Val, Jenny, Rosa and Betty, Betty also won the raffle.

The sales table did particularly well this time.

The hostesses for the afternoon were Elizabeth and Lorraine and members engaged in a catch-up.

The July meeting will see Hinds observing their 90th birthday with an afternoon tea at Betty Wilson’s home, starting at 1.30pm.

We want a long road with not many turns

W

e’re ready and waiting, but again this district seems to have been put on the backburner.

About a month ago, shovel-ready projects to kickstart the economy following Covid-19 were called for and this district met the brief and nominated a number of projects that could be used to help revitalise things.

Included in them were our big ticket items and part of a separate suggestion was the old chestnut of a four-lane highway from Ashburton to Rolleston courtesy of advocate and National MP, Andrew Falloon.

Despite the best intentions and some strong cases being put forward, we’re not in the mix.

The majority of it? Headed to the North Island. Cue the shock horror.

Sometimes you sit back here in our green and gold bubble and wonder where we went wrong.

What did we do to deserve the cold shoulder so much of the time.

Sure, we’ve had some great boosts to various causes over the past few years, but they are pretty specific and not really encompassing for the entire collective of Mid Cantabrians as a whole.

There’s been plenty of correspondence on the prospect of a four-lane highway over the past few years. More than anyone probably cares to remember to be fair.

But having now driven the new northbound part of the Southern Motorway from Rolleston through to Addington last weekend, I’m impressed and wishing we had something similar for the whole trip.

Selfish reasons, you say? You bet. But if I think that way then I think we’d struggle to find many who wouldn’t agree. Anything that makes life easier is always welcomed after all.

Once completed, that stretch of road is going to save a whole heap of time. And it already feels a lot safer than the previous roading network we were forced to take to get to the centre of Christchurch.

So come on, throw a dog a bone here.

Spend some money wisely and invest on safety and while you are at it, don’t forget that just because we’re not north of Cook Strait, we are just as important as anyone else.

Labour readies for election W

ith just 78 days until the election, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is cleaning house.

After a disastrous few months for Health Minister David Clark, the PM sat down with him late last week and gave him little option but to give up his seat at the Cabinet table.

She had already talked with Education Minister Chris Hipkins about taking over the job.

For the second time in months offered Ardern his resignation, this time she accepted it.

The government’s efforts to keep Covid-19 at bay, for the most part, have been applauded.

With the election campaign merely weeks away, a distraction the size of a flailing health minister is not what Labour needs.

Criticism of Clark ramped up in recent weeks, making it untenable for Ardern to keep the Dunedin North MP in the role.

Public outcry reached new levels when he refused to take responsibility for failures at the border that led to two women being able to leave isolation without first being tested for Covid-19.

Taking a swipe at Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield – while he stood beside him – was the final nail in his ministerial coffin.

The prime minister summoned him.

“Late last week I had a discus-

sion with the minister around some of the issues that were getting in the way of our ability to really focus in on Covid-19.

“And the minister came to the conclusion that in his view that meant he could no longer continue in the role,” she said.

Before making that decision he sought advice from those close to him.

By all accounts, nobody fought to make him stay – not even his mates and ministerial colleagues Grant Robertson and Chris Hipkins.

“Yes, he made the right call,” Robertson said.

Hipkins said: “David’s a good friend of mine, I think he realised that his presence in the role was becoming a distraction, or was already a distraction.”

The distractions started back in early April, as the country’s Covid-19 cases peaked.

Taking his family to the beach and then on a second occasion driving to a mountain bike track was a low point which he later acknowledged.

“In hindsight, all I can think was, what an idiot,” Clark said.

At that time, Clark offered his resignation but Ardern opted to instead demote him saying if she wasn’t in the middle of dealing with a global pandemic she would have sacked him.

That was the beginning of a downward spiral, a broken man

left with little to no confidence in his own ability to do the job.

Knowing his blunders would be dug out of the archives at any point over the next 10 weeks - any ability became outweighed by the liability he had become.

Even Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters was doing his best to distance himself from the controversy.

“Look, I’m not responsible for the prime minister’s choice of ministers. I’m responsible for the choice of my own ministers and they’re a sea of stability at this point in time as you all well know.’’

Asked if any of his own team had put themselves forward, to replace Clark as health minister, Peters took to irony.

“Self-promotion has never been what my party’s famous for.’’

Yet just last week on Checkpoint one of his MPs, Children’s Minister Tracey Martin was eyeing up the portfolio.

“If we come back after the election and if we have an opportunity to renegotiate I certainly wouldn’t take it off the table,” she said.

For now, Hipkins has the job albeit in more of a caretaker role with very few announcements likely to be made in the run-up to the election.

Housing Minister Megan Woods has already taken on the

meatier aspects of the Covid response – including testing at the border.

Within hours of taking over, Hipkins was being grilled by opposition spokesperson Michael Woodhouse.

Outside of the House Hipkins faced even tougher questions, like, whether he would continue to enjoy his daily coke and regular sausage rolls now he was health minister?

His response: “Ahhhh pass.”

Hipkins already has a pretty full plate and National’s deputy leader Nikki Kaye says giving the portfolio to the already busy education minister shows the government isn’t giving health the attention it deserves.

“Being minister of health in a global pandemic should be a fulltime job,’’ she said.

Hipkins will be hoping his short but busy stint overseeing what’s known as the worst job in government has a happier ending than his predecessor’s.

t’s always risky offending people you like and respect when you have a differing view on things.

One such instance arose recently when a champion of local history and preservation came out in full support of retaining, and re-using somehow, the old Cates Grain Store on West Street.

I come from a bit of a heritage retention standpoint myself and have been saddened over the years by the amount of built history we’ve sacrificed in our town.

In some cases, they probably wouldn’t have survived the quakes in good shape but others were never at risk of just “falling down”.

But in the case of the Cates building, I would shed zero tears over its removal.

To these eyes it’s a big, ugly, oversized redundant behemoth on the CBD landscape and it has become, I fear, a giant and expensive headache for the owner.

Who would pump the reportedly required millions into getting that fit for some sort of purpose?

My guess? Absolutely no one.

I mean, you gotta pick your battles, right?

A big ugly shed in the middle of a revitalised CBD contributes nothing. In fact, to my eye, the contrary.

But elsewhere there are real causes for concern.

The saddest, and hardest to fathom development that has left me feeling quite distraught, is happening not even in

our own country.

Across the Tasman, at Ultimo in Sydney, the Powerhouse Museum grew out of the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences. In 1988 the Powerhouse Museum opened to critical acclaim in the former and extensively redeveloped Ultimo Power Station site.

A spectacular exhibition chronicling Australia’s proud industrial, cultural and social history. An award-winning development fit for purpose then and now.

But, in recent years, there has been a move, in limited political quarters, to dismantle the collection, clear the site and sell the land to developers.

The collection, theoretically, is moving to a new development at Parramatta, in a building colloquially described as the ‘Milk Crate’.

Built on a flood plain, and capable of housing only a fraction of the present collection and, additionally, masquerading as an event and function space.

Plus there have been concerns raised that some of the larger items could never be installed, leaving them in storage somewhere or, in some cases, allocated

to regional museums which in some case have less than ideal conservation resources.

Exhibits like Locomotive No 1, the steam engine that hauled New South Wales very first train back in 1855.

It is large, it is heavy and at this age, is delicate. Experts fear shifting it will cause it harm. It is very rare for any country to retain its first locomotive. It is a national treasure.

Strongly advocating this move is NSW State Premier Gladys Berijiklian, who appears determined on driving this destruction through and is tone-deaf to the protests.

Reportedly, she has only visited the museum once and found it boring. From her particular 49-year-old Australian female viewpoint, it would appear that preserving and showcasing her nation’s proud industrial history and development in its present form is not worth as much as selling the site to developers.

I watch, from this side of the ditch, and despair.

Is this a trend?

Are we about to witness, in the years ahead, a disinterest, a dismissiveness, a viral lack of appreciation and understanding of the developments and technology that have brought us to where we are today?

In this crazy, rapidly-changing world with new agendas and re-arranged priorities is precious history going to be kicked to the kerb?

What is the future of the Ferrymeads, the MOTAT’s, the Plains Railways, the Ashburton Aviation Museums?

Stunning collections have been passionately curated, but what does their futures really look like?

In Manchester England at the phenomenal Science & Industry Museum, the aviation collection in the nearby Air & Space Hall is to be disbanded and the exhibits moved on. Apparently the future of the site is undecided.

Elsewhere, the museum houses incredibly good displays including a working woollen mill, the antique steam locomotive Stephensons Rocket, and the railway station of the world’s first passenger railway. Manchester was considered the birthplace of the industrial revolution. A leader in the developing world.

So much fascinating history currently remains preserved and showcased.

What sort of catastrophe would it be if, for a brief window in humankind, this history was lost forever due to a distorted sense of priorities and callous disregard of history?

Some of us are very concerned.

Orange and ginger pound cake 200g butter 350g caster sugar Zest of 3 oranges 5 eggs 1 C coarsely chopped crystallised ginger, plus extra for decoration 250g flour 1½ T orange juice 1¾ C icing sugar 65g cream cheese ■■ Preheat the oven to 175°C. ■■ Butter a round, loose-bottomed 22cm diameter cake tin and line the bottom with baking paper.

■■ Beat the butter, sugar and the finely grated zest from 2 oranges until pale, thick and fluffy.

■■ Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each.

■■ Stir in the flour and ginger, making sure they are mixed in thoroughly but not beaten.

■■ Pour the mixture into the cake tin, place in the oven and bake

for 45-55 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean.

■■ Remove from the oven and cool completely then remove from the tin.

■■ Put the orange juice, icing sugar and cream cheese into a bowl

and beat until smooth.

■■ Spread this all over the cake.

■■ Decorate with slices of ginger and the remaining orange zest.

■■ Serve in wedges.

Many of you will already know Steve Wise, a clinical pharmacist at Sealy Street. Steve has been a community pharmacist in Ashburton for more than 30 years. He is a member of

the Clinical Advisory Pharmacists’ Association (CAPA) which requires a Post Graduate Clinical Diploma and community practice experience to ensure the right mix of skills and knowledge.

Whether it was reparations for last year’s final or laying down an early season marker, Celtic in the end got the job done.

The side secured a 38-31 win over College A in Thursday’s ACL premier 1 opener at the EA Network Centre, as topflight netball in Mid Canterbury made its post-Covid return.

A combative replay of the 2019 premier 1 final was followed by opening night victories for Hampstead over United and

Methven over Mt Somers.

Celtic’s robust start to the big encounter kept College’s attacking strengths at bay, as last year’s beaten finalists nudged ahead during the early exchanges.

They locked into a groove after the first interval as they widened a three-goal advantage to 10 by the halftime break, with Celtic’s middle and defensive thirds hustling for scraps and Alice Breading and Caitlin Adlam adding the points from the circle.

Down 23-13 at the midway point, College were not done and

jousted hard for any bit of possession as the side enjoyed better fortunes across the third period.

Goal attack Hayley Tallentire directed her side’s drive to the net with purpose and drained some long-range goals herself as College got the score back to 30-23.

However it was not enough to haul back their opponents, as both sides went toe-to-toe during the final stanza with the two titans sharing the fourth quarter ledger with eights goals apiece.

Hampstead came out on top over United with a 30-20 win after

leading 18-10 at halftime.

The blue-and-golds frustrated their markers in the ring as they kept United’s tally in check, particularly in a scrappy third period where they were restricted to three.

United finished the encounter strongly on defence as they plugged up Hampstead’s goal scoring momentum to keep the margin to 10.

Methven ran out a comfortable 41-25 win over Mt Somers in the final premier 1 matchup of the night – the side thriving now that

goal-scoring machine Leanne Clemens is back on deck for the 2020 season.

In premier 2, Hampstead B beat College B 39-25, Southern A trounced Methven B 47-16 and Celtic B dispatched their C team 45-22.

Across court in the third grade saw College 10A defeat United B 37-25 and Southern B knock over Methven (Methven Shearmac) 36-18.

Hampstead’s under-18A outfit sat the first week of competition out with the bye.

Another step up for Hampstead

A further lift in intensity is in the offing for Hampstead as their Watters Cup campaign goes up another notch.

The senior team host cup front runners Methven today, who themselves will be looking to find their rhythm across 80 minutes.

The perennial Watters Cup cellar-dwellars have been a spirited component over the first two weeks of the competition this season, including a first-up upset win over Celtic a fortnight ago.

Although beaten down in Hinds last week, the outfit managed to take it to Southern during the middle third of the game, despite a set piece which was largely vanquished.

The team does possess some stealthy ball runners when going forward, and a solid foundation up front of course will be critical to their chances this afternoon.

What they will want to avoid is another repeat of last week’s brittle scrum, which had them on the backfoot in a flash against Southern.

Methven got their campaign under way last week after a first week bye which allowed the club to fit in another pre-season gallop.

Last year’s beaten finalists did enough at home last week against Celtic to seal a first-up win.

However the team’s discipline left a lot to be desired, with a string

Southern derby set to be a belter

840 days, exactly.

Not a day less, not a day more.

Yet despite such a gap in between matches under the roof at Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium tonight, there’ll be an eerie sense of familiarity when the Crusaders and Highlanders lock horns in the fourth round of Super Rugby Aotearoa.

As is the case with any South Island derby between the two sides, it promises to be a belter.

The Crusaders, coming off two good wins to open their season, up against a Highlanders side which showed heart beyond their talent base in an agonising loss to the Blues in Auckland seven days ago.

Crusaders coach Scott Robertson has rung the changes, five in total, for the clash including a couple of key positional changes – particularly in the backline where David Havili gets to the nod to wear the No.15 jersey ahead of an in-form Will Jordan, who shifts to the right wing.

Both Bryn Hall and All Blacks winger, George Bridge, get a spell this weekend, with Mitch Drummond gaining his first starting jersey for the season.

Seevu Reece also comes out of the starting line-up and moves to

David Havili will be wearing the No. 15 jersey tonight. the bench, with Leicester Faingaánuku starting on the left wing.

In the forward pack Ethan Blackadder comes into the matchday 15 to replace Cullen Grace, who has suffered a thumb fracture which was operated on earlier this week, and Tom Chris-

tie comes in for Billy Harmon on the other side of the scrum.

Exciting Tasman back, Fetuli Paea, is set to become Crusader number 245 on Saturday night, having been named on the bench for what will be his first Super Rugby appearance.

Also included in the reserves is Oli Jager, who was a late withdrawal from the side last week with a back complaint but is now fully fit to return to the matchday 23.

Following their successful return from injury to play club rugby last week, Andrew Makalio and Quinten Strange have both been named in the reserves for the first time in Super Rugby Aotearoa, and make a welcome return to face the Highlanders.

For the Highlanders, Aaron Mauger has also made five changes to his starting line up to face his old franchise with the most notable probably the experience Michael Collins starting at fullback.

Ngatungane Punivai comes onto the right wing for Sam Gilbert who suffered a season-ending knee injury last week in the loss to the Blues.

Up front, a strong Crusaders scrum will be met by a new starting front-row of Daniel LienertBrown, Liam Coltman and Jeff Thwaites, who replace Ayden Johnstone, Ash Dixon and Siate Tokolahi respectively.

With a loss and a win from their two matches, but a bonus point for their Auckland effort last weekend the Highlanders currently sit middle of the pack,

and a win this weekend against the powerhouse Crusader outfit would put them right back into contention.

Meanwhile, the Crusaders will be out to continue their strong start to the competition and move level with the Blues at the top of the table with three wins apiece if they can face up to what will undoubtedly be a passionate Highlanders side spurred on by their usual amount of vocal home support.

Stratford does best in classic finale

The side went on a try-scoring spree to hammer Geraldine 68-5 on Wednesday night. Coach Shaun Bovey said the group wanted to make a statement ahead of the hit-out, commending his side’s support play and staunch defence. It follows prior pre-season wins last week over St Kevin’s/Waitaki and Timaru Girls’ High School.

Craig Stratford came out on top in the Collegiate Open’s main event after a nailbiting epic last weekend.

In a match befitting of a grand finale, Stratford, an old boy of the Celtic Squash Club, edged top seed Lee Barker from Ashburton in the championship final.

The pair engaged in an absorbing tit-for-tat battle on court during the fifth set, prevailing 19-17 in the end following a cut-throat clash.

Stratford came into the draw as second seed, and qualified for the drawcard clash courtesy of wins over Samuel Shearer and Agustin Maunier.

Barker meanwhile booked his spot after defeating Bryan Ford and later Thomas Cooper.

Maunier responded after his second round exit to clinch the special plate with a win over Cooper.

Shearer prevailed over Connor Bolitho in the plate playoff, before Lily Rae secured some silverware after beating Ford in the consolation plate showdown.

Blues prepared for life after Beaudy Beauden Barrett’s sabbatical with Japanese club Suntory Sungoliath will not stop him turning out for the All Blacks next year.

Barrett has signed with Suntory for one year, on a contract reportedly worth $3 million.

The move to Japan will see Barrett miss next year’s Super Rugby season with the Blues, before he returns to New Zealand for the 2021 international season.

The plan to play in Japan in 2021 is part of Barrett’s four-year deal agreed last year with New Zealand Rugby (NZR) and the Blues.

“For me it made sense to go next year and then have two years back with the Blues and hopefully the All Blacks in the lead-up to the Rugby World Cup,” Barrett said.

“My wife and I are excited to head to Japan next year.

“It is an appealing place for a young family and comparatively safe in health terms.”

It’s understood the deal has been negotiated between the Blues and Suntory, not New Zealand Rugby.

sional rugby and performance, Chris Lendrum, said Barrett’s arrangement was similar to All Blacks team-mates Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock who played in Japan this year.

“That flexibility in our contracting is key,” Lendrum said.

“It allows our top players to refresh in a different rugby environment but remain committed to New Zealand Rugby which, in the long term, is great for both parties.”

Blues head coach Leon MacDonald said his coaching group had always planned on being without Barrett for the 2021 season.

“Our focus is fully on the current campaign but we have plans for next year without Beaudy.

“He will be a big loss but that is countered with what he is doing on and off the field this year, and that we get him for two more years.”

At Suntory Barrett will link up New Zealander Milton Haig who is head coach for the Tokyo-based club.

Beauden Barrett is off to Japan next year.

A Grade action kicks into gear Ashburton’s local men’s A Grade basketball competition began for the season on Wednesday night featuring some familiar faces, a new team and without the defending champions who spent the week on the sideline.

Delayed, like every other sport in the country, due to Covid-19, the competition started with a hiss and a roar with two strong match-ups with both College and Newlands recording strong wins, while Team Donkey enjoyed the bye.

College, fresh off a tough defeat the night before in the Thomson Trophy, brushed that off and put together an impressive performance, despite suffering plenty of injuries and sickness with only seven players.

They took on Nomads, and while the 85-63 scoreline suggest a game in which they were always in control, the three-point lead at the end of the first quarter suggested otherwise.

By half-time that score was a little more comfortable at 48-33 and then College kept Nomads to just 11 points in the third to lead by 26 heading into the final quarter.

It was a much better final quarter for Nomads who warmed into the match, outscoring College by four points with the final score 85-63 to College.

With the advantage of having at least played some basketball, College certainly hit the ground running, and Nomads will certainly improve with the game under their belt.

Liam Sullivan found his shooting sweet spot, nailing 25 points, while Riley Sa chipped in with a solid 16 and was strong on defence as well.

For Nomads, Nick Ross led the charge, picking up 19 points in an effort which included draining five three-pointers.

The night’s second match saw the always-reliable Newlands side taking on competition newcomers, Wildlife, who replace the now-defunct Farmers Corner side.

A red-hot start saw the court on fire early on in the match and it was Wildlife who found themselves in front with a 23-19 lead at the end of the first quarter – a lead and margin they took into

the half time break with plenty of baskets being drained in a 45-42 scoreline.

Newlands tightened up on their defence in the third quarter and put a halt to the easy drive to the basket that Wildfire had enjoyed up until that point. That, coupled with a stronger effort at the other end of the court, saw them take a 65-55 lead heading into the final quarter.

A 10-2 run early in the final quarter saw Newlands take complete control, and a spate of three

Fechney was massive on the court scoring 22 points, but even more impressive was his rebound work at both ends of the court.

Marc Juntilla put in a solid performance too, netting 19 points, while Randy Buenafe picked up 18 points.

Meanwhile for Wildfire, Emiliano Guerra was a real handful on the offensive end, netting himself 19 points, while Sean Hunter grabbed himself 14 points and Sam Pearce worked hard for his 13-point haul.

Next week College take on Team Donkey who return to the fold, while Newlands and Nomads will lock horns in the other match.

Tough loss, but strong performance from College

Thomas Patterson had a strong game in Ashburton College’s loss to Cashmere High School this week.

There were plenty of positives, despite finishing on the wrong side of the score sheet, for the Ashburton College Boys’ Basketball team on Tuesday night as they fell to Cashmere High School 75-92.

Coming in off a tough loss in the first round of the Thomson Trophy when beaten by Burnside, the AshColl lads took to the court with high hopes of a victory against a similarly young opponent – with both sides very much in the rebuilding phase.

A frenetic opening to the match saw both sides trading baskets, but a strong zone press gave Cashmere the early edge as they forced turnovers from their visitors.

Some long-range shooting late in the first quarter left College trailing the game by 10 at the first break for the match.

An improved second quarter, when Ashburton made some strong inroads on attack, wasn’t enough to eat into the lead with Cashmere extending out to 42-56 at the half time break.

Cashmere started the third stanza strongly, pushing through

the centre and scoring some easy baskets to extend the lead even further, and by the time AshColl got things together again, the damage had been done.

Twenty-one points down heading into the final quarter, College had nothing to lose, and for a good portion of that quarter they owned the court with an increased pace which went unmatched by Cashmere.

The differential was dragged back to 12, and for a few moments it looked like College were in with a shot, but a regrouped Cashmere strung some late baskets together and ran away with the match.

While it was disappointing to pick up their second loss for the season, coach Brian Kerr said there were plenty of positives that could be taken from the match.

“The boys had some issues in dealing with the zone press applied by Cashmere, as well as having some defensive lapses in their zone which allowed Cashmere some easy baskets,” he said.

“Whilst these lapses occurred only a couple of times, this is primarily what hurt College.

“It was more about reassuring

the College boys in having the confidence in how to break the press.

“Once they began dissecting Cashmere’s zone press they were able to counterattack more easily resulting in some easy baskets.”

Kambell Stills produced another strong effort with some solid work at both ends of the court, snaring rebounds and posing plenty of trouble on attack, picking up 27 points.

Jacob Tallentire was on fire under the basket, grabbing countless rebounds and putting them back in for his 16-point effort, while Thomas Patterson hustled well on defence and bagged 10 points down the other end of the court.

“Overall it was an excellent effort from the boys, who were fielding only a nine-player roster due to injury and sickness,” Kerr said. “They never gave up trying and at times they played some terrific basketball.”

The College side is back in action next on July 21 when they take on Christchurch Boys High School at the Oxford Street Stadium.

Yachties happily spending up large T

he rich boys and their toys.

Make that very rich boys, because these toys are very, very expensive.

You know the ones, tearing around the Hauraki Gulf or wherever, in an undoubtedly spectacular show of seaspray and low-flying, risking life and limb in the pursuit of defending the Auld Mug. Of course it must be one hell of a buzz, driving/piloting these juggernauts, as they blast around the harbour at ridiculous speeds, barely in contact with the water at all, and one and all will be having a glorious time of it, which is what rich boys are entitled to do; they can do what they like with the vast amounts of dosh at their disposal.

Except – didn’t I read that the Government (read: taxpayer, read: you) punted up $250 million to get this thing going?

Oh well, fair enough, we didn’t have anything better to do with that Shane Jones-sized parcel of cash, in this day and age where every Kiwi is happy with their lot in life, and rightly know their place in the bigger scheme of things.

Not to mention the Auckland Council chucking in another $100

million to “spruce up the waterfront” so it will look pretty for all the billionaires who will be cruising up in their droves, parking up their superyachts at the marina for the peasants to drool over.

Anyway, it’s an investment, they say.

There’ll be even more of those fat 747s that are currently clunking up the Auckland airport runways, chock full of supremely well-heeled tourists, will be just be rolling in to sample the delightful lattes at the cafes and restaurants in the dockyard areas, spending up large, so we can recoup our “investment”, so that’s fair enough.

But, it appears all is not quite as marvellous as it appears in the garden; the yachties look as if they’ve got themselves into an NRL-scale debacle, one which might take a bit of sorting out.

Talk of a mislaid cheque – for a mere $3 million so hardly worth bothering with really – that somehow has landed in a mysterious Hungarian bank account.

Earlier this week, Emirates Team NZ issued a media statement, saying ‘‘highly defamatory and inaccurate allegations regarding financial and structural matters’’ had been levelled against Ace, ETNZ and its

personnel.

It said ETNZ had ended a contract and claimed ‘‘spies’’ were caught leaking confidential information and spreading ‘‘inaccurate allegations’’.

They said the claims were baseless.

A spokeswoman for Economic Development Minister Phil Twyford confirmed he had been made aware of fraud allegations concerning Auckland’s hosting of the America’s Cup. Who wrote this script?

The team’s managing director, Grant Dalton, is loudly expounding to all and sundry that no public money has been misused in the writing of this enigmatic novel.

He would, wouldn’t he, as the boss of everything to do with the America’s Cup in New Zealand; it is all very much in his own interests for everything to be squeaky clean.

In the last America’s Cup cam-

paign he was on around $2 million a year; one would presume his current positions would mean he’s doing even better this time around.

So, it’s just bad form to have government agents poking around the financials, when the people in charge have already said everything is totally ok and above board.

And anyway, a month ago Sport NZ announced a $25 million relief package targeted towards community and regional sport, so that should surely be enough to keep the proleriat happy.

Speaking of the NRL, as we were a mere dozen paragraphs ago, everyone is well aware of their track record in stunning off-field catastrophes, like two every year since their inception, keeping them as much on the front pages as the back where they belong.

But, to be fair, when they get their product right on the field of play, it’s equally impressive.

And that’s what we saw on Thursday night.

The Storm and the Roosters have massive history. Between them they’ve won nearly everything for more than a decade.

But their head-to-head stats are

even more fascinating.

Going into Thursday night’s match they had scored exactly the same number of points against each other over their entire history.

After 70 minutes the Storm were dead and buried; 10 points down after throwing everything they had at the Roosters. But after 78 minutes it was 24 all; after 79-and-a-half minutes it was 25 all.

Tension, drama, extra time, sporting theatre of the highest order.

Deep in Roosters’ territory, Boyd Cordner, one of the ultimate professionals of the game, muffed a simple play-the-ball to give the Storm scrum possession.

How could that possibly happen? Replays showed Cordner staggering away from the tackle, being escorted by Mickey and Minnie Mouse, because he was off in Disneyland, after his head hit the ground in truly sickening fashion.

But the Storm pounced, forced a penalty, and Cam Smith – one of the best league players ever – was never going to miss icing that cake from right in front.

Breathtaking stuff; if only the Warriors could get themselves into that sort of game, eh Erin.

■■BASKETBALL

Adams ‘training with the cows’ Basketballer Steven Adams has been preparing for the return of the NBA season on his Rotorua farm and jokingly says he has been “boxing out cows”.

The NBA season went on hiatus in early March, after Utah Jazz centre Rudy Gobert tested positive for Covid-19, and Adams returned to New Zealand to wait out the break in competition.

The Oklahoma City Thunder centre has split his time between his farm in Rotorua and Wellington.

“It was relaxing, mate. I was doing farm work, got a bit of a farmer’s tan going on for a little bit,” he said.

“The cows are doing good.”

Adams has also managed to get in some pick-up basketball games to keep sharp for the return of the NBA on July 30.

Despite an increasing number of NBA players – a total of 25 as of yesterday – returning positive Covid-19 test results, Adams had no hesitation in heading back.

“I always imagined I would come back, it would have been kind of empty not finishing the season.”

The Thunder and all other NBA teams will stay physically distanced during workouts in their practice facilities until it’s time to head to Orlando for the re-start of the competition at Walt Disney World Resort.

The Thunder have a 40-24 regular season record, and Adams told the OKC website that it might take time for the team to regain their on-court chemistry after such a long break.

“People can just show up and play, but together as a team and execution of the right timing and plays and coverages and stuff, that’s a whole different story,” he said. “It’s not really to do with conditioning and stuff like that, it’s more to do with, again your team chemistry and how well you flow together as a team.

“The team that gets it on quick are the ones that come out strong. I’m betting on our team.

“Our team’s done relatively well with those sort of things, holding together.”

Calendar confirmed More than 1000 race meetings at 51 venues throughout New Zealand were confirmed today by the Dates Committee of the Racing Industry Transition Agency (RITA) for the forthcoming racing year.

The racing calendar, which covers the period from August 1 2020 to July 31 2021, follows consultation with the three racing codes, clubs and other recognised racing organisations of a revised draft racing calendar that reflected the impact of Covid-19 on the industry and the critical need for racing industry reform.

The final programme of racing includes a number of changes from the draft calendar following careful consideration of 100 submissions which covered feedback on a range of topics from scheduling changes to the allocation of racing dates.

The key changes in the final calendar are: Increased number of Thoroughbred meetings from 273 to 278 and Harness meetings from 246 to 257 (including dual meetings).

Greyhound meetings increase from 459 to 478 with new six race programmes at Forbury and Ascot Park.

Conditional reintroduction of five dates to Avondale Jockey Club and ten dates to Forbury Park contingent on the development of regional racing plans before 31 December 2020 Reintroduction of harness dates at Manawatu Raceway, Gore, Tauherenikau, Otaki, Roxburgh, Blenheim and Timaru venues Venues that were scheduled to have no racing in the draft but now will are; Avon-

dale, Forbury, Blenheim and Roxburgh Marlborough (January) and West Coast (March) Harness dates reinstated RITA Dates Committee Chair, Edward Rennell said the final calendar was intended to maximise the benefit for the thousands of New Zealaders who rely on racing for their livelihoods.

“The significant effort, attention and passion that went into the submissions enabled RITA to develop a final calendar which we believe meets the immediate needs of racing next year and provides scope for the industry to address the critical need for venue intensification.

“Many of the submissions provided thoughtful and constructive feedback on specific issues in the original draft, however there was also general recognition that ongoing changes to the calendar were required.

“In several cases suggestions were put forward to develop solutions that are in the best interest of sustaining racing in regions,” says Rennell.

Licences allocated to the Avondale JC and Forbury Park TC are conditional on regional reviews of racing in the Auckland and Dunedin districts being completed by 31 December 2020.

This will allow the recommended outcomes of these reviews to be considered prior to the allocation of dates for the 21/22 season. RITA will also engage with the codes to ensure greater alignment with their future venue plans, including encouraging regional reviews to be undertaken in the Tasman, Mid Canterbury to North Otago and Southland regions.

Transporter and Truck and Trailer Driver

• Class 2 minimum drivers’ licence

• Have at least five years’ experience in residential and commercial drainage • Be able to lead a team and work well within the team • Have a strong emphasis on health and safety and be able to complete jobs on time

• This position requires a class 5 WTR operator with a wide range of experience in transport including loading and unloading plant • Be able to take care of plant and equipment to a high standard.

Civil Works Team Supervisor

This position involves working with a wide range of siteworks civil contracting.

• Be able to read, understand and implement jobs from plans and contracts • Strong emphasis on health and safety • Be able to complete jobs on time and within budget.

• Be able to read, interpret plans and complete all paperwork / compliance required.

Contracts Manager / General

This position is one of large responsibility.

To be able to manage a wide range of pricing, programming with civil, road and government contracts.

A minimum of five years’ experience is required.

You must have a good focus on delivering quality work on time and within budget.

Must be able to build good working relationships with staff and clients and be an excellent communicator.
