Suspicious fires prompt warnings

Mid Canterbury firefighters are urging people to keep an eye out for suspicious activity after three cases of suspected arson on Saturday night.

The first occurred behind a boulder at the Hinds Domain at 7.52pm, which was attended by the Hinds Rural Fire Force

for about 30 minutes with no real damage.

A couple of hours later, at 10.53pm, Hinds firefighters were called to a small hay bale fire on Poplar Road, near the intersection of Isleworth Road, which was shortly followed by a large fire nearby on Longbeach Road at 10.58pm which engulfed more than 1300 hay bales.

Hinds chief fire officer Dave Kingsbury said all three fires were being treated as suspicious and the two hay bale fires were believed to be linked.

College ball a ‘complete success’

Ashburton College’s senior James Bond-themed ball went off without a hitch on Friday night with hundreds of students and their partners dressed to the nines.

This year the ball moved from its usual venue at Hotel Ashburton to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Acting principal Andrew Pearce

said the night was a complete success and the venue was wonderful with lots of different spaces for students to mingle and a great red carpet entrance which parents could view.

The venue meant there could be different rooms for people wanting to dance, eat or take photos.

The students loved it and all enjoyed dancing with more people on the dance floor than previ-

ous years, she said. “It all went off without a hitch.”

The school will need to complete a review of the venue before deciding if it would be suitable for future balls but it had gone well and there was no reason why they wouldn’t use the facility again, she said.

“It was very successful, we were very grateful to the event centre.”

The ball committee, which was

made up of 10 Year 12 and 13 students, did a wonderful job organising the whole event including the decorations and music, she said.

The group even showed up at 10am the next day to clean up.

“They put in a lot of hard work.”

Following the cancellation of the traditional Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service after ball party in May, parents

took it upon themselves to organise their own which went very well, Mrs Pearce said.

Sergeant Bryan Ennis was also pleased with the behaviour of students following the ball with no issues being reported to the police.

Suspicious fires Call for businesses to unite prompt warnings

Businessman Allan McCormick believes every business owner in Ashburton should be supporting East Street retailers in their fight to change the town’s inner town parking regime.

His business is located on the outskirts of the business area, but the parking issue is one that ultimately affects every person who owns a business or does business in town, Mr McCormick said.

While retailers are asking the council to scrap the pay and display meters in the inner town, replacing them with one-hour parking restrictions, the council is not keen on the idea. It wants to keep the meters and reduce parking costs to 50 cents an hour.

That will overcome the problem of faulty meters and the combination of high parking fees and meters that are frequently out of action are giving shoppers one more reason not to come into town, they say.

Mr McCormick is keen to see every business owner in town join the cause.

“There’s absolutely no reason why we can’t have free parking across town. The council says they might have to increase business rates to do this because they’d lose money, but most of their parking money comes from infringements and they’d still have those. They might get a bit more in if the parking was free and more people came into town,” he said.

“I want to tell the councillors to get their heads out of their backsides; that’s where they’ve been for too long,” he said.

“I believe we have a heart of our town that’s dying and it’s dying because the council is not helping business owners in the town centre.”

Town centre businesses were already finding it tough going trying to make a living in an area where half of

the buildings had been demolished, Mr McCormick said.

“There are some businesses here who are having a hell of a struggle. I’m challenging business owners other than those in the town centre to support these people. As a business district we should be supporting one another. We need to be united.”

As an act of protest, Mr McCormick refuses to put money in meters if he’s stopping off for five or 10 minutes. The retailers have petition forms around Ashburton and they will make a presentation to the council on July 7 in support of one-hour free parking.

It is a waste of good resources and of firefighters’ time. Suspicious fires like this don’t happen very often but when they do it can be a big problem because either stock go hungry or farmers are put out of pocket, he said.

“It’s frustrating from our point of view. There’s a whole lot of implications.”

People needed to be vigilant and keep an eye out for unusual activity or unknown vehicles and report them to police.

Willowby Rural Fire Force chief fire officer Steve Russell, who was in charge of the Longbeach Road fire, said firefighters were there all night on Saturday and yesterday with assistance from Hinds, Mayfield and Ashburton Rural.

“As far as we can see at this point it’s a case of arson.

It’s still burning now, we’ve just contained it and protected an area of trees.”

Both incidents seem like opportunist offences with someone first seeing a couple of hay bales stacked on the side of the road before finding the large pile on a farmer’s property not far from the roadside, he said.

People lighting these fires need to realise that while they may seem like a bit of fun, they destroy property and potentially put lives in danger, Mr Russell said.

If the Longbeach Road fire was not able to be contained it could have moved to nearby sheds and farmer’s house. “It’s also a big waste of everyone’s time.”

When incidents like this occur it is very hard to catch someone unless they are seen doing it, so people need to watch out for suspicious activity.

Sergeant Bryan Ennis said police were investigating all three fires and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Ashburton station on 307-8400 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A collective 80 years of smoking has come to an end for three men taking part in a Smokefree challenge.

Craig Simpson, Klifi Leugaimala and Russell Warlow are part of a seven-man group participating in part two of Ashburton Contracting Limited’s Smokefree challenge. The two-part challenge began at the end of May leading up to World Smokefree Day. Part one ran for six weeks with 12 participants, part two runs for six months.

At the end of the six months any participants who have kept away from the smokes will go into a lucky draw.

Jane Jolly, health and safety manager at Ashburton Contracting, said this was part

of an initiative to look at the health of employees as well as safety.

“As a construction company you tend to promote more of the safety side of health and safety, so in the past two years we wanted to promote the health side,” she said.

Previously they ran a ‘Biggest Loser’ challenge and collectively employees lost over 100kg.

Some of the smoking quitters said they no longer woke up with a bad taste in their mouth, and food tasted different.

Klifi Leugaimala, who had been smoking for 12 years, said his partner had also quit smoking and a spin-off was that they no longer drank as much alcohol.

After 26 years of smoking and quitting between seven or eight times, Craig Simp-

son said he told his partner, “When you’re ready to do it, I’ll do it,” and now they have both given up cigarettes.

Russell Warlow had been smoking for 40 years. Stopping smoking meant he has now started eating breakfast, and that in turned helped him not wanting to smoke.

The Cancer Society has sent gift bags with rugby balls, stress balls and gift vouchers to the participants to celebrate their progress.

Smokefree Mid Canterbury promoter Mandy Casey said Ashburton was a leader in New Zealand in adopting Smokefree environments.

“We’re leading the way in the country with our eight smokefree cafés and smoking banned on Collegiate Rugby Club grounds,” she said.

Great conditions on the mountain Mt Hutt was a hive of activity at the weekend with sun, chilly temperatures and recent snowfall making for some great skiing.

Ski area manager James McKenzie said they had been lucky over the past few days with some natural snowfalls and colder temperatures allowing the skifield to run their snowmaking machines at capacity.

“Combined with great grooming, we’re really stoked with our snow quality on the main trails and guest feedback has been really positive this weekend.

“It’s been fantastic to see so many happy faces up here this weekend, we’re very happy with the numbers that have come up.”

The sun and live music provided good vibes around the mountain on both days.

The skifield is now gearing up for the school holidays, which start this weekend with lots of activities for children including a bouncy castle, lolly scrambles, a treasure hunt, live music and competitions.

Smokefree promoters have applauded the Ashburton District Council for proposing to extend its outdoor smokefree areas.

Council’s sportsfields are already smokefree but a new draft smokefree policy extends that to areas outside council buildings, playgrounds, the Ashburton skatepark and council-sponsored events.

The policy is open for consultation until July 31.

Health promoter Mandy Casey said Ashburton was leading the way towards a smokefree Aotearoa in 2025.

“We have smokefree cafes and parks. We have the Collegiate Rugby Club grounds that are smokefree and Celtic will be by January 1; anyone who wants to smoke there will have to go out to the road.”

Mrs Casey said she hoped other sports clubs would come on board to make their grounds smokefree too.

“We are looking for every opportunity to create smokefree environments for the next generation. We have come a long way since smoking was banned in pubs and we know smoking causes not only lung cancer, but other cancers.”

Council adopted its new draft smokefree outdoor areas policy for consultation at its meeting last week. People have until July 31 to make submissions.

During council’s annual plan process last month, four organisations asked council to extend their smokefree policy or endorse the goal of a Smokefree New Zealand by 2025.

The draft policy says the Ashburton Domain, Argyle Park, Robilliard Park and Digby Park are smokefree, and that council-supported events are also promoted as smokefree.

Smoking will not be permitted 10 metres from the entrances and exits to the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre, council’s administration building and chambers, the Ashburton Public Library and the EA Networks Sports Centre.

The policy is intended to be self-policing with the onus on members of the community to feel empowered by smokefree signs and to single out those smoking in prohibited areas.

The rate of smoking in Ashburton district is similar to national trends, with 17 per cent considering themselves regular smokers; 24 per cent were ex-smokers and 59 per cent had never smoked.

Annual plan signed off

The Ashburton District Council might have taken a conservative approach to its rates take for the coming year, but it is still committed to maintaining a high level of service for ratepayers, says mayor Angus McKay. The council yesterday signed off next year’s annual plan, the document that details how it will spend ratepayers’ money and it came up with a rate rise which was well below the number anticipated.

Rates will increase by an average of 3.3 per cent in 2016/17, down from the 4.5 per cent in-

crease tagged in its long term plan. Ashburton residential ratepayers will be paying just 2.2 per cent more in rates while rural land owners will pay around 5.4 per cent extra.

The council’s total rate take will be around $31.7 million.

Roading takes the lion’s share of rating dollars, with recreational and leisure spending close behind.

Wastewater and drinking water will take about $4 million each from total rates.

The council signed off its annual plan after it received 56 submissions on the draft plan.

These were across a range of

areas but several requests were made for the council to invest money in extending court and meeting room areas at the EA Neworks Centre and to kick start its planning for the use of green areas and playing fields around the centre.

Hearings were held during the last week in May. In signing off the plan, Mr McKay said councillors had discussed submissions and had also taken into account the findings of the annual residents’ survey which showed that people were overall happy with the council’s performance, and we intend to improve this level of satisfaction

even further over the coming year,” he said.

The work programme and budget outlined in the plan reflected what was needed to cater to the district’s changing community, Mr McKay said.

The Annual Plan 2016/17 covers year two of Council’s Long Term Plan 2015-25, and includes detailed and final budget information, work programmes and the fees and charges schedule for the 2016/17 financial year.

The Annual Plan also provides explanations for any significant variances to the information provided in the Long Term Plan for the 2016/17 year.

$1 billion fund Prime Minister John Key has announced a new $1 billion fund to fast-track infrastructure development by councils with high new housing demands.

The councils eligible to access the fund for such things as water and roading development are Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Christchurch and Queenstown.

They are the cities that are expected to have more than 10 per cent population growth in the next 10 years.

Mr Key said a number of options were being considered for the management of the fund including a similar model to Crown Fibre Holding which was created to manage the rollout of Ultra-Fast Broadband.

He signalled the Government was considering another big measure – to establish Urban Development Authorities – for specific areas of high housing need.

They would have the power to override barriers to largescale development which could include responsibility for planning and consenting.

Disorderly behaviour A 22-year-old Ashburton male was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour following an incident at McDonalds at 2.50am yesterday.

Drink driving As a result of a driving complaint from a member of the public, a 21-year-old man was processed for drink-driving in Ashburton at 2.50am yesterday and recorded an excess breath alcohol level of 629mcg. A 43-year-old Ashburton man also recorded an excess breath alcohol level of 477mcg at 8.30pm on Saturday and a 37-yaer-old male recorded 351mcg at 8.40pm.

Failed to give way A minor vehicle collision occurred after one vehicle failed to give way to another at an intersection in Staveley at 3.40pm on Saturday.

The same thing happened at an intersection on West Street at 5.31pm. Sergeant Bryan Ennis said people needed to remember to give way at intersections and drive to the conditions.

A man is in a critical condition after competing in the Mud Sweat and Tears challenge in Canterbury yesterday. A St John Ambulance spokesman said emergency services were called to Motukarara at 11.51am yesterday where a man in his 60s suffered a serious medical incident. He was flown via a Westpac rescue helicopter to Christchurch Hospital. The Fire Service also attended the scene.

The event is based at the Motukarara race course where participants are required to complete obstacles including mud slides, forest runs, hay bale pyramid, a crawl under a sea of barbed wire, horse jumps, water jumps and mud runs.

Are we there yet? It may have been over 100 years ago, but at least one of the early settlers on a road trip from Ashburton to Hokitika and back is bound to have asked the question at some point.

And rightly so. While today’s travellers can cut out the entire journey by car in a day, the camping trip in 1897 using horse-drawn vehicles took 13 days.

Ashburton author Margaret Bean has unveiled a vivid and entertaining account of the trip as published in the Ashburton Guardian at the time.

The holiday-makers included Llewellyn Owen, David Grant, the Shearman brothers (Robert and John), W. H. Collier (William Hedley) and John Newman, cabman and proprietor of the Somerset Stables.

Mrs Bean has reprinted their account, and another of a trip to Mount Cook and back, in a booklet called Two Journeys.

There are just 200 copies, with some left for sale.

She said the group was enthusiastic but had no way to communi-

cate if things went badly, camped overnight in tents and travelled on hardly-formed roads.

Yet they still managed to experience the grandeur and beauty of the landscape, and write about it for the newspaper.

On the West Coast trip, the group departed on January 4, arriving at their destination in Hokitika on January 8.

The return trip took longer and included a day weather-bound in the Bealey Gorge.

Mrs Bean said the book was a bit of history about the rigours of early travel and a social commentary of the times.

The artwork on the cover was by Ethel Jones.

She said she suspected the newspaper article was penned

by Mr Grant, a first master at Borough School, or Mr Owen, a teacher and performer.

An Exhibition of Nudes features works from Philip Beadle, Pamela Hueston and Vicki Knudsen from July 1-28.

Beadle works in oil, watercolour, drypoint and monotype with his immediate environment being Christchurch, where he lives, with its cityscapes, the Canterbury Plains, the Southern Alps and Banks Peninsula - all sources of subject matter and inspiration.

He regularly travels and paints around New Zealand and has had several trips overseas gathering material from which he has painted.

“Capturing the light striking a range of subject matter has always interested me whether it is the landscape, nude or cityscapes,” he said.

“I’m interested in our emotional response to the often fleeting memories we retain of something we have seen and how it affected us.”

Light is very important to him and he enjoys painting in a warm low evening or winter light to resolve form, colour and light, creating exciting painting surfaces with abstract qualities.

Painting for pleasure started in 1995 for Hueston, when she joined the Akaroa Art Group.

The beautiful scenery of Banks Peninsula was inspirational to her and

Pamela went to many weekend schools run by the Ashburton Society of Arts.

After the tragic death of her youngest son Tim, Hueston fulfilled her lifetime dream of formal art training.

She attended Aoraki Polytechnic in Timaru for five years, with part-time tuition by the renowned artist Paul Van den Bergh, resulting in a Diploma in Painting and a Diploma in Fine Art with distinction.

Hueston describes herself as a realist but likes to combine the abstract in to her work, using predominantly oils, “I am basically a realist although I explore the abstract world and hopefully can combine a bit of both.

“I love the beauty of form, the rhythm, movement, the song and flow in painting.”

In this exhibition, Knudsen uses the models she has drawn at The Cranmer and Ilam Life Drawing groups that she attends.

After sketching, she transfers chosen pieces into paintings or drawings on cotton paper at home.

The paintings that follow often take on their own identity and bear little resemblance to the original - artistic license comes into play.

Knudsen has exhibited many times in mostly group exhibitions at the Selwyn Gallery, Oxford Gallery, Southland Art Society and as guest artists for the Ashburton Society of Arts.

Spare a thought for the district’s firefighters

P

eople who light fires for fun not only cause unnecessary damage and put lives in danger, they also waste firefighters’ valuable time.

Dozens of Mid Canterbury firefighters spent hours extinguishing three suspected arson incidents on Saturday night when they really didn’t need to be.

What might seem like a bit of fun can turn into hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars-worth of damage.

We all know that fires can be mesmerising and many people are drawn to them but let’s just keep the flames to fireplaces and candles where their warm light can dance in a safe place.

Firefighters spend so much of their valuable time extinguishing blazes that could not have been prevented, not to mention attending vehicle collisions and medical emergencies, so it is frustrating to hear about them called out to fires that were needlessly started.

Most of the district’s firefighters are volunteers who have jobs and families yet if they get a call, whether they are in the middle of a work meeting or taking their children to the park, they rush to their fire station to help.

We should all be thankful for the work they do – some of it, especially car crashes, can be pretty horrific – and make sure they are not wasting their valuable time by attending preventable incidents.

Let’s try to minimise the number of incidents they attend by warning friends and family of the dangers and selfishness of lighting deliberate fires.

There are also those fires that aren’t deliberate but have started out of carelessness that take up a lot of time.

It’s not only the firefighters we should think of but also the people who have their homes or property damaged by these incidents.

One of the fires on Saturday destroyed more than 1300 hay bales, which will be a huge cost to the owner, not to mention how dangerous a fire engulfing so many hay bales is.

We are just lucky that the weather conditions enabled our district’s firefighters to contain the blaze which could have easily taken hold of a line of nearby trees and spread to sheds and a house with people inside.

Improving the lives of Kiwi families T

he latest measures to distribute dividends from New Zealand’s growing economy to families come into effect on July 1.

These dividends include lower ACC motor vehicle levies, improvements to rental accommodation, altered income levels for KiwiSaver, extra Pharmac funding and more.

All of these changes help improve life for Kiwi families all over New Zealand.

We’re putting yet more money in New Zealanders pockets with the average ACC levy for a private motor vehicle falling to around $130 per vehicle. This is down from $330 two years ago.

Extra funding for Pharmac in Budget 2016, makes available new treatments for advanced melanoma, hepatitis C, and kidney disorders in children.

Courting kingmaker MPs Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten have begun reaching out to crossbench MPs, as the prime minister remained hopeful of returning with a slim majority.

On current counting the Liberal-Nationals coalition holds 72 seats to Labor’s 67, with four independents and one Green on the crossbench.

But six seats remain in doubt: Chisholm, Forde, Herbert, Hindmarsh where Labor leads, and Dunkley and Gilmore where the coalition is ahead.

The prime minister put the number of undecided seats at 12, with recounts likely in a number of other close battles.

“I remain quietly confident that a majority coalition government will be returned,” Mr Turnbull said yesterday.

Coalition strategists believe postal and pre-poll votes will favour the government.

Mr Turnbull promised the new parliament, which could sit in early August, would be resolved “without division or rancour”.

“What we will do is ensure that we work constructively and effectively with all of the members of the new parliament to ensure that we deliver the stability and the leadership that Australians expect,” he said. Mr Turnbull and Mr Shorten both have spoken with a number of crossbenchers.

The Labor leader said he wanted to play a “constructive” role in the new parliament and deliver on jobs, health, education and climate change.

Bangladeshis behind restaurant slaughter Seven militants who killed 20 people at a restaurant in Dhaka were local Bangladeshis and authorities had tried before to arrest five of them, police say, as investigators probe for possible links with international Islamist extremist groups.

The gunmen stormed the upmarket restaurant in the diplomatic zone at the weekend, before killing 20 hostages, including at least nine Italians, seven Japanese and an American.

Islamic State claimed responsibility, warning citizens of “crusader countries” that their citizens would not be safe “as long as their aircraft are killing Muslims”,

the group said in a statement. It also posted pictures of five fighters it said were involved in the attack. Its claims have not been confirmed.

Security sources said Bangladeshi authorities were investigating any ties between the gunmen and trans-national Islamist extremist groups.

Whoever was responsible, the attack marked a major escalation in violence by militants who have demanded Islamic rule in Bangladesh, whose 160 million people are mostly Muslim.

Previous attacks have mostly singled out individuals advocating a secular or liberal

lifestyle or religious minorities.

Friday night’s attack was more co-ordinated. The attackers stormed a restaurant in the diplomatic enclave popular with the expatriate community during the final days of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

They ordered all Bangladeshis to stand up before they began killing foreigners, a source briefed on the investigation said.

Most of the victims were hacked with machetes before around 100 commandos entered the building, killing six of the militants and capturing a seventh, after a 12hour standoff, police said.

Flicks under French starlight

A sleepy village in France is transformed once a year into a mecca for movie fans.

T

he third film on the big screen flickers to its end as the night sky fades to dawn.

The stayers lying on rugs in the orchard or propped up on the amphitheatre gaze past the framed cinematic world to the fields and woodland beyond.

Gindou, a tiny village in the Midi-Pyrenees, comes alive once a year with its film festival.

It’s an unlikely setting.

The village on a hill in southwestern France has a cemetery, one tabac – which also doubles as a post office – and one church.

No pub. No cafe. No restaurant.

But in the last week of August, the big tents go up, the beer kegs and wine barrels are rolled in and the food trucks’ awnings stretch out in preparation for hundreds of movie-goers.

What began 30 years ago with a local doctor and a projector has grown.

Now more than 70 films are shown over the week, with the final night wrapping up at the outdoor cinema with three consecutive features and the summer sunrise.

Jazz, blues, synthesizer pop and folk acts set up in the courtyard on different nights.

The crowd mills about chatting, eating and drinking.

Film buff George Chapman headed along to soak up the atmosphere. writers present their work and take questions, with an invited filmmaker taking centre stage each year.

Alongside the niche, the experimental and the avant-garde are films presented by their directors in Gindou that have gone on to win Oscars, Caesars and Golden Bears, and although most are in French, there are a scattering of English-language films as well.

“People like the films or they don’t. They always say,” Rachael French, the film festival’s vice president, says as the long tables begin filling up in the courtyard ahead of a screening.

“It’s a wonderful atmosphere.

“They come from all over France and filmmakers come from all over the world.”

But Gindou is easy to miss if you’re not paying attention to the map.

The village is half an hour’s drive from the regional capital Cahors, which is about two hours north of Toulouse.

Not overly touristy, this is one

of the most beautiful parts of France. Sandstone buildings with lichen-coloured shutters cluster around market squares.

And close to Gindou are towns and villages, which seem to dot the map in any direction every 10 to 15 minutes, and misshapen fields in valley floors that rise to rocky, steep-sided hills covered in Quercy oaks (beneath which grow the region’s renowned black truffles).

The closest centre is the small town of Cazals, a five-minute drive down the road, which has everything from the best boulangerie in the area to a camping site and lake for swimming.

The city of Cahors has a thriving market every Saturday, and is a stunning place with Roman walls, a 14th Century Valentre bridge, winding alleyways and hidden gardens.

It’s this backdrop, close to the Lot and Dordogne rivers, that sets the film festival in its relaxed context.

“Normally when a director comes to Gindou they want to come again,” Marie Vigo, the codirector and programmer of the festival, says sipping an espresso.

She travels to Cannes and other film festivals before deciding on their selection for the year, and has seen many regulars come and go through the village,

where she also lives.

“Alain Guiraudie started here.

Asghar Farhadi won an Oscar a few years ago, he was in Gindou five or six years ago. Abderrahmane Sissako, who’s won six or seven Caesars, was here with his first short film 20 years ago.”

It’s easy to see why they come back, and the film lovers as well.

It’s the way to watch a film; not in a cinema seat, but propped up on a pillow under starlight and with a warm summer breeze.

And after the week, Gindou winds back down and the calm, unhurried pace returns to the village.

The Ashburton Indoor Bowls Association hosted the south eastern zone final for the NZ mixed fours and NZ mixed pairs on Saturday.

Teams from Ashburton, Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago locked horns in a bid for national berths.

Both competitions were played in a round robin format, with the winners of each event advancing to the NZIB National Final that will be held on July 23 and 24 in Lower Hutt, Wellington.

Ashburton’s mixed fours team boasted the combination of Russell Ellis, Geoff and Bernice Laird and Gaylene Smith, who had played together in the zone finals previously in 2014.

The day didn’t get off to the best start for the local foursome, losing out 17-2 to a strong Canterbury team of David Philpott, Mike King, Bev Diamond and Vanessa Tyson.

The following rounds they improved though, winning 16-6 against South Canterbury and 14-7 over North Otago.

With the Canterbury team winning two games and losing their final tie to South Canterbury, a countback was required on ends to find the eventual winner and Canterbury came out on top by two to progress to the national final.

Representing Ashburton in the mixed pairs was Simon and Julie Thomas.

The mixed pairs is a new event that is being played for the first time this season.

Simon, who has recently been named in the South Island team, and Julie had an outstanding day on the mats.

The Rakaia duo first defeated North Otago 9-8, and then accounted for South Canterbury 15-4 and finally Canterbury 13-11.

With an unbeaten record on the day, they qualified for the national final and will vie to have their names first engraved on the trophy.

By Kris shannon Steven Adams might have allowed himself a smile as he watched the first day of the NBA free agency period unfold yesterday.

Not because the future of teammate Kevin Durant was settled – that’s still very much in flux – but because the money being thrown around provided an indication that Adams’ 2017 payday would be even more astronomical than first thought.

With every team awash with cash after a new television deal saw the salary cap sky-rocket, this time next year will prove extremely profitable for the 22-yearold Kiwi.

Estimations from as recently as May that Adams will receive a four-year deal in the range of US$15 million a year ($22m) now seem well short of the mark.

Given the breakout playoff performance that followed those predictions and given the magnitude of contracts handed out in the last 24 hours, Adams appears in line to earn a maximum deal.

For a player with fewer than six years’ experience, that figure will start at US$22 million ($30m).

In other words, Adams could over the course of his contract earn the same amount as the current New Zealand Rugby player pool ($121m across a three-year period).

If Oklahoma are unwilling to offer such an amount – and all indications suggest the Thunder want to lock up a player they drafted at No 12 overall – Adams will find no shortage of suitors.

Bye comes at a good time

By DaviD Skipwith After struggling with a leg injury over the past three weeks, Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson hopes to be back to full fitness in time for their long-haul trip to Perth to play Manly in a fortnight.

Coming off Saturday’s crucial 27-18 win over the Gold Coast, the battered and bruised Warriors will enjoy a well-earned break through next week’s bye round before looking to consolidate their position in the top eight through the final eight rounds of the regular season.

Johnson suffered a quad injury while goal-kicking in the round 14 win over Newcastle and has hardly trained in the lead-up to their last three matches, with the club’s medical staff nursing him through to game day each week and hooker Issac Luke handling shots at goal.

The injury has also hampered his kicking in general play but despite hobbling around the park he has still managed to find the speed, strength and skill to score brilliant individual tries to get his side home against the Roosters and Titans.

And after improving their winloss record from four-seven to eight-eight over the past five weeks, Johnson hopes he’ll be firing on all cylinders when the Warriors meet the Sea Eagles at nib Stadium in Perth on July 16.

“It’s fine,” Johnson said of the niggling injury.

“I’ve had a few light weeks so just wanted to make it to the games and I’ve been able to do

that, so I’ll get it right over this week with the bye and it should be fine by the time we play again.

“I want to get back into kicking.

“Tonight there were times when I probably ran because I couldn’t really kick so (I’m) definitely wanting that back.

“If I manage it right this week there should be no reason why next week, leading into that (Manly) game away, to get back into all of that stuff.”

The Warriors mid-season revival has come at a physical cost and coach Andrew McFadden was also pleased his side will enjoy a well-timed rest before preparing for their run home.

“We’ve had four wins and a golden point loss so it’s been a really good consistent run for us,” said McFadden.

“Each game’s been different and we’ve competed and played really well.

“We just need to use the bye now to freshen up.

“There are some guys that have been battling and we’ve had some really tough games of late so it’s timely for us and we’ve got to refocus for that last eight weeks.”

After back-to-back away games in Western Australia and Canberra the Warriors return to Auckland for a home game against Penrith in round 21, ahead of a

re-match with the Titans on the Gold Coast, before hosting South Sydney back at Mt Smart Stadium.

The round 24 trip to Townsville to face reigning premiers North Queensland is undoubtedly their toughest assignment, but the final fortnight sees them camped at home

for games against Wests Tigers and Parramatta.

Veteran wing Manu Vatuvei should be fit to play against the Sea Eagles after missing the last three games with a hamstring injury, as will captain Ryan Hoffman, who was a late withdrawal from the Titans match due to a virus.

Champs sound a warning

Rakaia and Southern remain unbeaten after recording wins over Celtic and Hampstead in round three of the Watters Cup on Saturday.

Rakaia sent a clear message that they will not be giving up their Watters Cup reign without a fight after posting a 38-28 victory over Celtic.

Rakaia were quick out of the traps and led 16-0 early on, but Celtic replied through Iromi Dawai to halve the deficit soon after.

But Rakaia weren’t about to let up, and went over again on the stroke of half time to boost their lead to 24-6 at the interval.

Celtic scored early in the second half to close the gap before the the green scrum rumbled over the Rakaia pack, allowing Hushton Tohovaka to touch down – and it was game on at 24-20.

The defending champions came back, though, and scored after too many phases to count to bring the score line to 30-20.

Rakaia dotted down again soon after to put the contest beyond doubt, but for a late try from Celtic hooker Neil Thompson.

Southern are up next on the agenda for Rakaia, with both teams unbeaten in the Watters Cup so far.

The two sides last met in the Combined Country Competition, when Southern took the honours, and Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft is expecting another tough battle.

“It was a good game of rugby (against Celtic) and we were pleasing early on,” said Foxcroft.

“I think we’ll just play our game (against Southern) and if everything comes together we’ll be hard to beat.”

Celtic coach Shane Enright rued his side’s missed tackles against Rakaia, but insisted his players will come back stronger after a bye next week.

“It was disappointing.

“We fell off our tackles and let them run the ball a lot,” he said.

“A lot of things added up for a poor performance.”

In the afternoon’s opposite fixture, Hampstead headed into their clash with Southern missing some key personnel.

The absence of Mariota Samoa, Josh Nonu, Zion Asi and TJ Mareko left coach Regan Broker with limited options in the backs, and things went from bad to worse 15 minutes in when fullback Kenny Faafalavau pulled up with a hamstring injury.

Fiji game annual event Super Rugby’s Pacific Island adventure has been given a massive thumbs up by the Chiefs and it’s understood negotiations are well advanced for a New Zealand derby to be played in Suva for the next three years. The Fijian government underwrote Friday night’s historic match between the Chiefs and Crusaders and, while the exact figure has not been revealed, will prove to be a financial windfall for both Kiwi teams who make the trip. Chiefs chief executive Andrew Flexman said the franchise made more money from hosting the match in Suva than they would have from a sold-out Stadium Waikato. - NZME

Highlanders leave it late The Highlanders have run in four late tries to seal a 48-18 over the spirited Southern Kings in their Super Rugby match in Port Elizabeth. Leading by just two points with 15 minutes to play, Dan Pryor, Jack Wilson, Patrick Osborne and Aki Seuli scored in the final quarter of the game. Matt Faddes scored a hat-trick for the Highlanders, who are fourth in the New Zealand conference behind the Hurricanes.

Cruel blow for Blues It was a predictable result in the end (37-27) but this was a game that most definitely didn’t conform to expectations. The Hurricanes got there thanks to their perseverance and greater composure and accuracy in the final quarter. When it came to that critical period when fatigue was settling in and the respective benches were flooding on, the Hurricanes held together better. It was a tough result for the Blues, who were right in it up until then in their best performance of the season.

Injuries ravage Rebels

Southern crossed over for nine tries in all to secure their second win in as many outings.

Broker said the string of injuries didn’t help Hampstead’s cause but credited Southern for a relentless display.

“We were disappointed with the impact from the bench,” he said.

“I think it was a bit of fitness as

well, but Southern are a very good side and they never eased up.

“The way they played they could go on and win the whole thing.”

Meanwhile Southern coach Michael Ellis will now turn his attention to his players’ biggest test yet when they travel to Rakaia next week.

Having beaten the Watters Cup holders already this season in the Combined Country Competition,

Ellis is expecting Rakaia to be determined to return the favour.

“They’ll have plenty of motivation for it, but we just need to keep doing what we’re doing,” he said.

“It’ll be physical and they’ll be up for it after a good win this week, we just need to rise to the challenge.”

Jaguares notch up another Super Rugby win The Argentina-based Jaguares have secured a third Super Rugby victory in their debut season, beating the Bulls 29-11 in Buenos Aires.

It was a morale-boosting win for the Jaguares, who had 13 players in the Argentina team beaten 27-0 by France last weekend.

The Rebels’ run of bad luck with injuries continued during their 57-31 loss to the Stormers at AAMI Park. The Melbourne team lost both locks, Luke Jones and Lopeti Timani, to concussion during the first half putting them in doubt for the match in Christchurch on Saturday.

Masters put four past Rebels

Mid Canterbury United Masters propelled themselves to second place on the division two ladder with a convincing 4-0 win over FC Twenty Rebels at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

United led 1-0 at halftime

Paul Bradford’s men continued to create chances but failed to find the net again in the first half.

United controlled the pace of the game in the second stanza

and Maikel Vallejo doubled his side’s lead with a well-taken finish.

Mid Canterbury piled on more pressure with 20 minutes to play and Stu Wiseman added a third, but the action didn’t end there.

As Rebels lost possession while

attacking, United caught the visitors on the break and left back Doug Gardner latched on to a cross to slot the fourth with the last kick of the game.

With Waimak Villa being held to a 2-2 draw by Halswell, United now sit five points behind league leaders Western Masters.

Germans advance after epic penalty shootout Germany finally ended 54 years of hurt against Italy in major tournaments, winning a wild penalty shootout 6-5 to reach the semifinals of the European Championship.

Jonas Hector scored the winning penalty in the quarter-final match in Bordeaux with the 18th kick of the shootout, slotting beyond Gianluigi Buffon and putting Germany in the last four of a sixth straight tournament.

“I took my heart in my hand,” said Hector, Germany’s left back, “and just wanted to make sure it went in.”

A cagey, tactical match between two of the continent’s heavyweights finished 1-1 after extra time, with Leonardo Bonucci’s 78th-minute penalty for Italy cancelling out a 65th-minute strike by Mesut Ozil.

Bonucci was one of seven players to fail to score in the shootout – Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger blazed over when he could have sealed

victory with the score at 2-2.

But Hector made no mistake after Manuel Neuer’s save from Matteo Darmian gave Germany another opening.

The truth is finally being acknowledged; test cricket is in danger of dying.

Cue the purists, who hate shorter formats of the game which have come to dominate player movements and television screens.

They’ll say the five-day format is the way cricket is meant to be played.

But you only have to look at any test series around the world to see empty seats, meaningless results and a whole lot of unsustainable costs.

Heath Mills, the chief executive of the New Zealand Cricket Player’s Association, said the biggest problem is that test cricket lacks meaning.

“We lurch from month to month with different bilateral series between countries and they are all different in nature,” Mills said.

“There’ll be a test series between countries one year, then they’ll play short-form the next, then there’ll be three ODIs or seven ODIs or one test or three tests.

It just has no context or meaning in the greater sense.”

And it’s the rise of T20 cricket and the shorter forms of the game, bringing in all the cash, which are paying for the format we love, but that’s sucking all the money.

“Test cricket is the biggest cost to the sport at the moment,” Mills said.

“I wouldn’t say the game is at a crisis point, but it’s nearing it.”

Broadcasters want numbers.

And for that, they’ll turn to the T20 leagues and the ODI world cups which attract thousands of numbers.

In a way, Mills believes it’s the sheer amount of cricket which is transforming the game.

He said players who are now grabbing contracts in multiple domestic and international T20 leagues, are often playing 12 months of cricket and that wasn’t sustainable.

Similarly, he stated the fact that a player can earn more money playing three months of T20 cricket, than they can playing 12 months of international cricket.

So what’s the solution?

Mills is still optimistic. But he says the bilateral series must go.

“They lack context and meaning,” he said.

“And now, there’s a greater understanding that bilateral series between countries are declining in value and broadcasters just aren’t prepare to pay what they have previously been playing.”

“We believe we can get an international model with context and meaning that works that provides balance for all three formats.”

Mills would rather see less test series played over the course of the year, but series that have more external value.

For example, a world competition that pits countries against each once over the course of a few years, with semi-finals and finals, would make each test series as valuable as the next.

Treble for Ritchie team A day that started on a winning note with impressive juvenile winner Bella Gioia got even better for Cambridge trainer Shaune Ritchie when he closed out proceedings at Te Rapa with victories by Promises and Bee Tee Junior to give him a winning treble on Saturday.

Ritchie admitted he was confident the team could perform well although the tricky Slow8 surface did give him some concerns prior to raceday.

“I thought we had some good winning chances, but at this time of the year you just never know as the tracks can be pretty tricky with the rain on them,” he said.

“We walked the home straight on Friday and thought the best place to be would be out wider and that’s how it panned out with all of our runners.”

Ritchie was delighted with the performance of Keeper mare Promises who finally obtained reward for her consistency after a string of minor placings.

any amount of ability but she’s also her own worst enemy,” he admitted.

“She just hasn’t been able to settle in her races so her record could be even better if she could

just relax a little early on.

“In saying that she has been better during this campaign so I do think there could be a nice race for her over a mile or more if the penny has dropped.

“She’s probably at that stage where the broodmare paddock is an attractive option, but I hope we can have her for another season as I do think that she can win at stakes level in the right race.”

Ritchie is also looking at some late spring riches with the consistent Bee Tee Junior who scored in the last race of the day.

“He is a very clean winded horse who just thrives over ground so I can see him being the type who could be a New Zealand Cup candidate if he can get his rating up,” he said.

“He goes on most track surfaces but I think we will try and avoid a really deep track as that would put paid to any late spring plans we have for him.

“He had a month between runs and that will be the pattern for him going forward.” - NZME

“He’s been going so well over a mile that we were a little hesitant to step him up over further,” noted Logan.

“He is a very easy horse to ride and so we were keen to get the claim on him.

“Zy did a great job and we will be keen to claim on him when he steps out again this winter.”

Logan will now look to plot a path to the New Zealand Cup with the gelding who she believes will be even better as he strengthens over the next six months.

“He still isn’t fully mature so I think he is an exciting pros-

pect for when he does hit full strength, “she said.

“We will space his races for that reason and hopefully when the Cup carnival rolls around in November he will be at his peak.”

BY DARREN WALTON Exhausted Novak Djokovic admits he may not play again until the Olympics after having his grand slam hopes sensationally scuppered with a shock third-round exit from Wimbledon.

Big-serving American Sam Querrey sent the all-conquering world No.1 crashing out of the championships with a stunning 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 7-6 (7-5) victory that blew the men’s draw wide open.

Already the first man to hold all four major trophies, Djokovic had been bidding to become the first since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete a calendar-year grand slam sweep.

But the 29-year-old was unable to claw back the two-set deficit he slept on after rain forced the suspension of play on Friday with Djokovic’s title defence on tenterhooks.

Querrey’s earth-moving triumph ended Djokovic’s open-era record 30-match winning streak at the slams and consigned the Serb to his earliest departure from a major since the 2009 French Open.

“It’s disappointing, of course, losing at a grand slam hurts more than any other tournament.

“There is no doubt about that,” Djokovic said. “Congratulation to Sam. He played a terrific match.

“He serves very well, as he usually does.

“That part of his game was brutal today. He just overpowered me.”

The top-seeded three-time champion had also been striving to become the first player since American Don Budge in 1938 to win five consecutive grand slam titles.

But after quickly taking the third set upon the resumption of play on Saturday, Djokovic was unable to force a decider despite serving for the fourth set at 5-4.

While Querrey can look forward to a meeting with Frenchman Nicolas Mahut for a place in the quarter-finals, Djokovic said he may not return to the court until next month’s Rio Games.

“It’s been a very successful year so far, but very long one, exhausting one, in every sense of that word.

Wimbledon dream over Marina Erakovic’s run has come to an end at Wimbledon as the 28-year-old Kiwi was beaten this morning by 12th seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in the third round. Erakovic ranked at 149 in the world entering the tournament had won three rounds of qualifying and then had wins over American Irina Falconi and former world No.1 Jelena Jankovic, however Suarez Navarro was a different prospect, tThe Spaniard winning the match 6-2 6-2 in just over one hours play. Despite the loss it is likely Erakovic will see her ranking improve to around 110.

Hampstead still unbeaten

Mid Canterbury’s four division one hockey teams recorded two wins and two losses on Saturday.

Wakanui Blue and Wakanui Black were both in action in Timaru for their men’s division one fixtures, while Hampstead hosted Timaru Girls’ High School’s 1st XI and HampsteadCollegians entertained Craighead at the Ashburton Hockey Turf.

Wakanui Blue downed last season’s finalists Tainui 3-1 for their third win of the season.

Blue were 2-0 ahead at half

time thanks to two goals from Hayden Sinclair.

Tainui’s Josh Dalziel netted to halve the deficit with 15 minutes to play after a dominant second half but Scott Marshall put the tie beyond doubt when he scored Wakanui Blue’s third with four minutes remaining.

In contrast, a depleted Wakanui Black were beaten 5-1 by Northern Hearts.

Black were 3-1 down at half time with Sam Kingston scoring the Mid Canterbury side’s only goal of the encounter.

But captain Mitch Moore will take positives from the clash.

In the absence of some key senior players, five Ashburton College students made the step up, while 13-year-old Jacob Gray filled in as goalkeeper.

“Jacob Gray played really, really well.

“It’s a bit late now trying to win things but all the young guys did really well and that’s what we’re trying to do now, give them game time,” said Moore.

Hampstead clung on to their unbeaten record against Timaru Girls’ High School in the women’s first division.
