Violent brawls ‘frequent’ BY DAISY HUDSON
DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A violent brawl in Ashburton’s CBD that left several people injured in the early hours of Sunday morning was nothing unusual, according to the town’s top cop. Police say up to 150 people were at the scene of the largescale fight, which broke out in the town’s CBD on East Street at around 3am.
A police constable required stitches to his face after being king hit when he tried to approach an offender. Two members of the public were also knocked unconscious during the incident, while several other people were treated for minor injuries. For Ashburton police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield, the violence was something he’d seen all too often since moving to
Ashburton nine months ago. “Although it doesn’t happen every weekend, it does happen frequently,” he said. It took all available Ashburton police staff, plus a police dog and handler from Timaru, at least 45 minutes to defuse the situation, Mr Banfield said. The injured constable required five stitches to his face, and was also suffering from a concussion and whiplash, he said.
The officer will remain off duty for a few days until he recovers. Six people have so far been arrested in relation to the incident, and Mr Banfield believed more arrests would be made as the investigation progressed. The partner of one of the men knocked unconscious shortly before the brawl, who wished only to be identified as Anna, said Ashburton had become a
dangerous place. She said she had stopped to check on a man who was lying unconscious on East Street in the early hours of Sunday morning and, when she turned around, she saw a group of five men knock her partner to the ground.
