Insider predicts alcohol policy will cause death

There will be more deaths on Ashburton roads because the Ashburton District Council has opted to apply its controversial one-way door policy to urban Ashburton pubs only, a hospitality expert says.

By axing its original plan to apply a 3am closing and 1am one-way door policy to all pubs in the district, Ashburton Trust chief executive Giles Beal said the council has made a decision that defies logic.

“This is very, very stupid, it’s disingenuous. We have the chief medical officer of health saying that one-way door policies only work if they are consistently applied.

It’s hard to believe the council has ignored this,” he said.

After months of consultation the council came up with

a draft Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) that set a 3am closing for all pubs and clubs, with a one-way door policy applying after 1am.

The rural-urban division for the one-way door policy would push Ashburton’s late night drinking problems into rural areas and it would see more people drinking and then driving, Mr Beal said.

“The responsibility for this happening lies with the council.”

Timaru has 3am closing with a one-way door policy applying after 2am and Ashburton’s hours would inevitably see people unable to get into an Ashburton pub after 1am, driving south, he said.

“This is the last thing you want; this policy will end up costing lives. The council has ignored the submitters and the working group and it’s cherry picked the advice of experts. This beggars belief.

You’ll have huge movement late at night and you’ll also have the transfer of parties into private homes, in an uncontrolled environment, until 4am.”

The trust might not have wanted a one-way door policy but it accepted that in formulating a responsible alcohol policy for the district there would always have to be compromise.

“The two changes taken together are ridiculous and being out of step with Timaru is even more ridiculous. The consistent approach is the only way a one-way door policy works.

“They’ve tried to find some kind of compromise and they’ve ballsed it up. It will create massive issues. This will end in a catastrophe.”

Wellington visual effects company Weta Digital’s most famous CGI character has won it an award at one of Hollywood’s most prestigious animation awards. The digital animation studio won the Annie Award for best character animation in a live action production for its work on Gollum in the first Hobbit film, An Unexpected Journey.

Gollum’s nominated animators - Jeff Capogreco, Jedrzej Wojtowicz, Kevin Estey, Alessandro Bonora and Gino Acevedo - beat out another Weta team which animated the Goblin King in the same movie, and nominees for a character in Pacific Rim. However, Weta lost out in the other category it was nominated in, best animated effects in a live action production, where its work on Man Of Steel was beaten by Pacific Rim.

Phil predicts longer winter Emerging from his lair on Super Bowl day, groundhog Punxsutawney Phil couldn’t predict the winner of the big game but his handlers said he was sure of his weather forecast: There will be six more weeks of winter.

Pennsylvania’s famed groundhog was roused from slumber at 7.28am yesterday and, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, directed handler Bill Deeley to a scroll that contained the prediction – along with a Super Bowl reference. As usual, thousands of fans turned out on Groundhog Day to see the furry rodent, the most famous of a small group of groundhogs said to forecast the weather. Legend has it that if the groundhog sees his shadow, winter will last another monthand-a-half. If he doesn’t see it, spring will come early.

Calf leads police on merry chase A runaway calf on Dunedin’s Southern Motorway sparked a pursuit involving six police cars before officers cornered the beast and “jumped on it”. Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said the calf had escaped from its Abbotsford paddock and was running south on the motorway towards Fairfield on Saturday about 2pm.

The alert was raised and soon two police cars were in pursuit.

“It then jumped the lane and headed north to Green Island and then back towards Abbotsford.” The pursuit had increased to six patrol cars as the calf continued to evade police. The calf was apprehended at the back of a block of flats in Abbotsford Rd, he said. “A couple of us cornered it and jumped on it.”

Virus shuts Blumenthal restaurant TV chef Heston Blumenthal has shut his gourmet London restaurant after it was hit by an outbreak of the same vomiting virus which forced him to close the Fat Duck five years ago. The “culinary alchemist” apologised to customers at his exclusive two Michelin-starred Dinner, which will remain closed for a week after 45 diners and members of staff were infected with norovirus.

The award-winning Fat Duck, in Bray, Berkshire, was left out of action for two weeks in 2009 following an outbreak of the winter bug that left over 500 people feeling sick. The 47-year-old said his personal experience and knowledge of the virus meant he knew that it was best to “err on the side of extreme caution”. “I am very sorry for the inconvenience to those customers affected,” he said. “However, I will reopen the restaurant safe in the knowledge that we have done everything we can do to continue to strive to create the perfect environment and food for my guests.”

Actor Philip Hoffman dead Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead in his New York apartment of a suspected drug overdose aged 46. The enigmatic star, who was hailed as the finest character actor of his generation, won an Oscar in 2006 as best actor for Capote and was nominated for three further Academy Awards. A substance thought to be heroin was found at the scene when police responded to the actor’s home in Manhattan’s West Village after receiving a call from one of his friends.

“It appears to be an alleged overdose,” a police official said. The actor was found on the bathroom floor with a syringe in his arm, wearing shorts and a T-shirt, the officer added. “Two glassine envelopes contained alleged heroin,” another officer said. There were no pills and no sign that the actor had been drinking, the first officer had said earlier. Law enforcement officials refused to comment further.

Expert shocked at deadly drinking

A medical expert is shocked at the support shown for an Ashburton teen who downed a bottle of Jagermeister in seconds as part of a controversial drinking game.

It comes as the 19-year-old, Izaac Moore, posted another video of himself on Facebook on Sunday once again drinking a bottle - containing 35 per cent alcohol - through a funnel while partaking in a drinking game dubbed nek nominate.

Two people in Ireland reportedly died as a result of the nek nominate craze yesterday – a game which tasks participants to film themselves downing alcohol before nominating someone to continue the chain.

Mr Moore featured in the Guardian on Friday after posting the video on social media on January 17, prompting concerned calls from alcohol rehabilitation experts that his actions were potentially deadly.

Since then, many young Ashburton adults have taken to so-

cial media to show their support for Mr Moore, who again posted a video of himself sculling a bottle of Jagermeister.

“The legend is back,” one supporter wrote.

Canterbury medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey condemned the actions and the support it received, saying Mr Moore is endangering himself and others. “He is putting himself at risk in the long term, and people who see him and copy him are at great risk too,” Dr Humphrey said

He said although Mr Moore may be able to handle large quanitities of alcohol in the short term, he may one day suffer long term affects such as liver and heart damage and eventually become prone to strokes.

“Nek nominate doesn’t have to be dangerous, in many of the cases the consumption is relatively mild, in my view it’s usually a bit of a laugh and not dangerous.

“But when they start genuinely consuming high levels that’s when it starts going from some-

thing that is a bit of fun to potentially dangerous.”

Mr Moore told the Guardian yesterday he had downed Jagermeister bottles three times before and it was “a bit of fun between a couple mates” that had spread on social media. He felt recent publicity was blown out of proportion.

“If other people want to do it’s up to them, we aren’t forcing anyone to do it, and if someone is considering doing it but think they might get harmed then they shouldn’t do it,” he said.

Fruit for life scheme gains traction

Ashburton’s home-grown delivery service that takes fresh fruit into urban schools and pre-schools has grown a new arm to its business.

Fruit Fund, established by Deirdre Moses to deliver free fresh fruit into schools and pre-schools, has now taken its healthy food challenge one step further with a fruit-for-life project.

“We’ve managed to source a lot of fruit tress and we’re asking people to sponsor these and they can then nominate a school or pre-school where they’ll be planted,” she said.

The project asks sponsors for $25 and the end result will be that children for years to come will be able to gather fruit from their school’s trees.

Fruit Fund was started last year, initially funded by Mrs Moses.

and surplus fruit from their own trees to boost the amount of fruit available. A number of schools and pre-schools are now on the Fruit Fund calling list.

For Mrs Moses, the inspira-

New home owners spend $71m

Last year, new home builders in the Ashburton District poured $71.098 million into the district’s construction industry coffers.

New records were set for dwelling consent numbers and values in 2013, with 215 new home consents issued at an average value per house of $330,688.

It was the second year in a row the number of new dwelling consents has hit a record high, with the value of the average home built in the district

climbing consistently at around 8 per cent a year.

In 2012, 211 consents were issued for new homes, with a total value of $56.097 million (average consent value $308,516), while 146 consents valued at $41.715 were issued in 2011 (average value $285,719.)

That the district’s building consent numbers were continuing to rocket up was no surprise to builder Craig Ingold. He’s got more work on his books than he can handle.

To cope he’s been forced to contract out some builds to out-of-towners and while that might not be the perfect answer

it’s the only solution to getting jobs done in a reasonable time in an extremely busy market, he said.

“We’ve got enough on the books for the whole year. We’ve got six on the go at the moment and 13 still to start. Without question this is the busiest it’s ever been,” Mr Ingold said.

While busy was a good problem to have, it did create problems in securing enough staff to meet demand, he said.

“I don’t even worry about looking for staff because there’s just no one out there.

“I don’t want to poach them from others; I’d rather concen-

trate on looking after the guys I’ve got.”

Last year was good and the new year showed every sign that the good times would continue, said Stonewood Homes Ashburton manager Sean Fibbs.

Demand for new homes was steady and showed no sign of slowing, he said.

Ashburton played a big part in helping dwelling consent issues in Canterbury surge by 43 per cent, the largest increase in New Zealand last year. Nationally the number of new dwellings consented in 2013 rose by 26 per cent at 21,300.

Domestic violence Ashburton police attended three domestic violence related incidents from Friday through to Sunday.

They will be following up on each incident.

Ashburton assault A 22-year-old Ashburton male was arrested for assault on Sunday about 12.05am. He will appear in Ashburton District Court in due course.

Ashburton burglaries An East Street business was entered on Sunday about 5am, however police believe nothing was taken from the premises.

Overnight Saturday, two Middle Road residents were targeted by burglars, with a garage entered and a wallet taken from a car.

Another car was broken into along the same stretch of road but nothing appears to have been taken.

Seafield Road crash A motorist emerged unscathed from a single car crash on Seafield Road about 9pm Sunday.

Ashburton police will be following up with inquiries into the incident.

Sevens super powers Police say new powers will help them quickly stamp out boozefuelled disorder during the Wellington Sevens. Inspector John Spence, operation commander for the event, said the new Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act placed greater responsibility on those serving alcohol to intervene when people became drunk. Police could also issue infringement notices for a range of offences, and evict people from the stadium. Mr Spence said as in previous years, security at the stadium will check fans are not smuggling alcohol into the event. An extra 160 officers are working during the tournament.

Cold case continues

At the school’s first full assembly for the year yesterday, students got to try out new plastic form chairs, which will seat over 480 people.

Principal John Schreurs said yesterday the old wooden forms which had filled the hall for decades had generated plenty of complaints, mainly about how hard they were for students and parents at prize givings.

“The new ones are certainly more comfortable than the old wooden ones,” he said.

The seats cost almost $30,000 and were funded by money raised at last year’s school fair, as well as from the school and the Parent Teacher Association.

“I don’t plan to make my assemblies any longer just because we have more comfortable seats,” Mr Schreurs assured students.

Sales of a million copies were recorded by January 14, less than a month after it was released and without marketing and with the game not yet “feature complete”.

Mr Hall, formerly of Oamaru, said the growing success of the game had made him determined to produce a “great” final

product. DayZ puts players into the fictional post-Soviet world of Chernarus, where an unknown virus has turned most of the population into zombies.

Players are part of a vast online world, where they can join up or fight with other online players.

It was the unstructured nature of gameplay which made

it appealing, Mr Hall said.

“I’ve described it in the past as almost an anti-game, in that it breaks many of the typical rules of game design,” he said.

An investigation into the cold-case disappearance of Tauranga woman Luana Williams will continue, despite the reward deadline ending without police finding out what happened to her. Ms Williams went missing from the Bay of Plenty city nearly 28 years ago, and a reward of $50,000 was offered in November in a bid for information or evidence to help close the case. Police vowed that despite the deadline passing, they would continue their enquiries into her disappearance.

Old lifeboat out The historic Hokitika lifeboat Countess, which served the local port from 1886, was brought out of storage last week in preparation to take to the water again. The 128-year-old boat, the oldest New Zealand-built lifeboat still in working order; was washed down and checked for holes by a group of volunteers who want to return the kauri vessel to the Hokitika River as part of the town’s 150th centennial celebrations, in December. Marine enthusiast Max Dowell, who obtained ownership of the locally-built Countess on behalf of the community in 2001, said they wanted to recreate a special landing.

New wave of Year 9 students rolls in

The tsunami of primary school pupils in Mid Canterbury has now hit Ashburton College, with it welcoming the largest cohort of Year 9 pupils in recent memory.

About 290 fresh faces officially became part of the college yesterday morning through a powhiri as 22 of the district’s schools opened their gates for 2014.

Ashburton College deputy principal Grant Congdon said the college had not seen a Year 9 group this large for several years.

“This year we will have 11 Year 9 classes and usually that sits around nine,” he said.

“In recent years we have had 250 to 260 Year 9s, but this growth seems to be something everyone is experiencing.

“We were expecting this and have been monitoring what has been coming through contributing schools.”

Although many appeared nervous, the Year 9 cohort and new staff were welcomed into the college with open arms during a half-hour powhiri, which has become an important first day tradition at the secondary school.

Mount Hutt College also held a powhiri, the first time it has done so to introduce its newest pupils who made up a significant part of the 460-strong roll.

the Guardian confirmed their predictions last week that their rolls were set to soar, with around 4800 pupils in total enrolled in Mid Canterbury.

Hampstead, Rakaia and Dorie all experienced rises on their starting rolls compared with last year, while schools such as Ashburton Christian School, Lauriston and Netherby saw similar numbers.

ment this year for its growing roll, with others expecting new classrooms to be built quicksmart to cater for the bulge of pupils.

“We have about 90 kids which is the same as last year, but it was a bit unusual in our case because we had about 18 pupils leave for overseas or the North Island last year, so we have seen a big turn over,” Ashburton Christian School principal Tim Kuipers said.

Ashburton College has welcomed one of its largest cohorts of Year 9 pupils, and yesterday the Guardian asked them how they were feeling on their first day at high school.

SPCA van deliberately damaged again

When staff arrived at the Ashburton SPCA headquarters yesterday morning it was a case of déjà vu; a flat tyre on one of the society’s vans – caused by someone cutting the valve off.

The same SPCA vehicle has been repeatedly vandalised over

recent months.

Mid Canterbury animal inspector John Keeley said the culprit had struck three weekends running, cutting a tyre valve off at the rim to deflate the tyre on each occasion.

Last year the same vehicle was targeted four times.

unteers have any idea what is motivating the destruction.

“It’s a bloody inconvenience and it costs money – Beaurepaires have been great, they haven’t charged us for the call out, but there is still the cost of the repairs every time,” Mr Keeley said. “The animals miss out – that money is allocated for

caring for them, not repairing tyres because some idiot has a vendetta.

“They are not just letting the tyre down, they are cutting the valve off – they are coming prepared with a knife.”

Mr Keeley would like to hear from anyone with information about the vandalism.

Science lab explosion A 20-year-old man was taken to Dunedin Hospital with moderate burns yesterday after petrol vapour exploded in a University of Otago chemistry department laboratory. The man sustained burns to his hands and face, a St John spokesman said. Fire Service staff called for the ambulance at 3.19pm. University staff evacuated the building and the laboratory was not damaged, a Dunedin City Fire Station spokesman said.

Porn at school A teacher alleged to have watched porn on a school laptop during classtime while students were present has been suspended for three months. The teacher was also accused of masturbating and watching porn in the classroom during lunchtime, but denied this.

The charges before the Teachers’ Council disciplinary tribunal alleged the incidents occurred during June last year. The tribunal ordered the three-month suspension in an interim decision made before the charges have been heard. It said the strongest evidence that he used a school computer to access porn had come from admissions made by the teacher. Pair sad to leave happy Hampstead

St Paul’s Presbyterian Church reverends Malutafa and Luisa Fruean are heading south after 13 years leading their “church family”.

The couple head both the Oxford Street church, and St James Church in Tinwald.

A combined final service this week, with photographs and food was held at St Paul’s to celebrate the time they spent in Ashburton. There is still one service in Tinwald to be held before they leave.

It has been a time of growth and friendship with a congrega-

tion they now consider family.

“They helped us, together we reached out to the community and we want to say thank you to the community. It’s been a privilege and a pleasure to be a part of the church family, they welcomed us with warmth,” said Malutafa.

“We came as ministers but molded into family,” said Luisa.

They were approached by Tokomairiroa Co-operating Parish in Milton – a combined parish of Presbryterian and Methodist dominations from churches at Milton and Waihola. They took a while to consider the move.

“We were at a crossroad of our journey. We were quite comfortable, but know that members have to go away to grow,” said Malutafa.

“The hardest part for leaving is folk here but with the leadership here, we are assured they will be looked after,” said Malutafa. “They will always be part of our family, and part of our journey.”

“We’ll always be family, always family to us,” said Luisa.

The couple have extended family all over New Zealand but the move south would take them closer to daughter Julia, who is studying at Otago Uni-

versity, but further from son, Jason, at Canterbury.

The Frueans said the call of the ministry led them and they wanted to thank the community who had “welcomed them with open arms” and supported them.

It would be their third move and the fifth parish – previously they had two in Gisborne and the two in Ashburton.

“It is mingling of sadness and of excitement…” said Lusia, of their mid February move.

“We are glad they have not been left in the lurch,” said Malutafa.

“It’s hard to leave.”

An anti-whaling ship captain has called for New Zealand naval vessels to police the escalating tension between Sea Shepherd and the Japanese whaling fleet.

The Sea Shepherd vessel, Sam Simon, arrived in Dunedin yesterday to refuel, as the whaling stoush in the Antarctic heats up.

That included claims and counterclaims of sabotage as vessels from opposing sides clashed on Sunday. Captain Adam Meyerson, 50, of San Francisco, told the Otago Daily Times it was “frustrating” to miss the action in the Ross Sea, where the 56m long vessel and its crew plan to return to this week. He questioned why the offshore patrol vessel HMNZS Otago was in the area “making sure people don’t take Patagonian toothfish out the water”, but ignoring the slaughter of whales.

“People don’t come to New Zealand to watch Patagonian toothfish,” he said. “If there was someone watching what was going on there would not be this whole ‘he said’, ‘she said’.”

Illegal cigarette sale earns fine A Mayfield storekeeper hit by a tobacco sting has had his day in court.

Kevin Monson was charged under the Smoke Free Environment Act 1990, with selling tobacco to an under 18-year-old in November 2012.

He has appeared several times, but for various reasons the court was unable to deal with his case.

Yesterday Judge Joanna Maze presided over a fixtures hearing in the Ashburton District

Court to determine his fate.

Monson, who maintained his innocence, defended himself, while the Ministry of Health was represented by Anselm Williams.

Monson said he usually asked for identification when selling tobacco, and he did not accept he had sold a packet of 20 cigarettes to an under 18-year-old.

He claimed that he had no recollection of the sale in question.

It was the first time he had

been prosecuted for breaching the tobacco act in 20 years of running a business.

Judge Maze said Monson had to show he was unaware that a breach occurred without his knowledge, but he had sold the cigarettes therefore he couldn’t prove due diligence had been taken.

She found the charge proven.

Mr Williams said the ministry was not seeking a fine within the $2000 to $5000 range permissible by the Act,

because it was the first matter to come before the court since the Act was amended in 2011.

Instead he suggested the matter be dealt with by way of an infringement fee of $500.

Judge Maze agreed and fined Monson $500; she also ordered him to pay solicitor’s fees of $130, but did not impose court costs.

Monson said the case had cost him in excess of $1000 over the 15 months it had been going on.

Medal recognises Tony’s work with veterans Ex-Ashburtonian Tony Bruce, was recently awarded an Order of Australia Medal for service to veterans and their families and to the community.

Mr Bruce grew up and was educated in Ashburton and for many years worked as a stock agent for Pyne Gould Guinness from its Ashburton office. He later moved to Australia, living in Moree.

His sister Gay Lane said her brother had a passion for working with war veterans. He has served variously as president,

welfare and pension officer and treasurer of the North Western sub-branch of Australia’s National Serviceman’s association. He is now a life member of the association.

The Order of Australia is presented in recognition of the achievements and service of Australians to their fellow citizens.

Nominations come directly from the community, either individuals or groups. The awards are announced on Australia Day, January 26.

“It’s a bit like saying more kids can use smartphones than can drive trucks,” he said. “I don’t think I could tie my laces at age five.”

Research had yet to find any detrimental effects of smart device use among children, he said, because it was “too soon to say”.

“But some research has shown that skills learned on iPads and things translate into

real life skills,” he said.

“The only thing I would get really concerned about is when it displaces the good things that we know that kids need - physical activity, face-to-face language interaction and things like that. And if it’s just being used as a cyber-sitter, then that’s a concern.

“The other concern is that it opens them up later on, exposing their digital footprint to a world of predators or they damage their online reputation.”

Samuel David McKenzie, 24, a freezing worker of Hampstead, was convicted of driving while disqualified. It was McKenzie’s third charge for the same offence – he was sentenced to 90 hours community work and disqualified for a further 12 months, beginning on September 10 when his current period of disqualification ends.

Robert Geoffrey Maddison, 30, a farmer of Westerfield, was convicted of driving with an excessive breath alcohol level of 689 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath (EBA 689/l) – he was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $800 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

30km/h city limit?

A proposal to lower the speed limit in Wellington’s central city to 30km/h is open for public comment. Wellington City Council has proposed extending the lower speed limit already in place on the Golden Mile to a wider area to improve pedestrian and cycle safety. Councillor Andy Foster said the council was seeking public views on the reduced speed and on the boundary of the safer speed area. Under the proposal, most arterial roads would stay at 50km/h. Most other central city streets around the Courtenay Place and Cuba St precincts, part of The Terrace and between Lambton Quay and the railway station would change to 30km/h.

Kids master smartphones, not laces More pre-school children know how to use a smartphone than can tie their shoelaces, new research shows.

The figure is even more extreme for New Zealand children compared to their global counterparts, with only 8 per cent of Kiwi kids aged 3-5 able to tie their own laces, compared to 14 per cent globally, findings from internet security company AVG show.

The Digital Diaries study, which questioned more than 6000 parents in 10 countries worldwide, found 58 per cent of New Zealand children aged 3-5 are fully capable of operating a smartphone or tablet, compared to 47 per cent in other countries. Only 35 per cent of Kiwi kids under 5 knew who to call in an emergency.

The results have prompted some concerns that children are failing to learn much-needed skills because they are too preoccupied by digital devices, with 83 per cent of Kiwi parents questioned admitting they were concerned.

Mr Cowan pointed to research that showed children under 13 should not use social networking sites because they “do not have the emotional resilience or the technical savvy to keep themselves safe”. But he said sites designed specifically for children were “overwhelmingly positive”.

AVG security advisor, Michael McKinnon, described children’s smartphone use as “a fairly divisive issue”, saying there would “inevitably” be consequences in the future.

In particular he pointed to social networking, describing the percentage of 6- to 9-year-olds using Facebook as “alarming”.

Children are not “emotionally equipped to handle all online experiences”, he said, and he called on parents to take more responsibility for their kids’ internet safety.

A man who was forced to drive for more than a 1km after a gunman hopped into his vehicle has told of the terrifying carjacking. Kieran Colmer said he was driving to his parents’ house after work on Sunday afternoon when a man carrying a gun opened his passenger door, got in, and told him to drive. The 22-year-old said he had could concentrate on only one thought during the ordeal.

“I just drove and tried not to get shot,” said Mr Colmer, who was still shaken-up yesterday by his role in the high-speed chase, which saw a section of Auckland’s Takanini locked-down. The offender, who appeared in court yesterday, gave simple “left”and “right”directions then jumped out, Mr Colmer said.

Work with Peters A majority of voters say Prime Minister John Key should work with New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, according to tonight’s TV3’s Reid Research poll.

And even more National voters support it. The Prime Minister announced on January 21 that National was reversing its ban on post-election talks with New Zealand First, which it had for the 2008 and 2011 elections. When asked if Mr Key should work with Mr Peters, 54 per cent said ‘yes, deal with him’, and 36 per cent ‘no, rule him out’. Of National voters, 61 per cent said ‘yes’ and 32 per cent ‘no’. Ten per cent did not know.

The poll is the first major one for the year and the first since Mr Key’s announcement. New Zealand First registered a 1.5 point rise in party vote support to 5.7 per cent.

Key hints at early election date

Snow in Mid Canterbury in summer contributed to wellbelow average temperatures in most of the South Island for January, Niwa says.

In its monthly climate summary out yesterday, Niwa made mention of about 10 centimetres of snow falling on Mt Hutt on January 8.

“January snow is not unusual there, but usually the amount of snow that falls in January is much smaller,” climate scientist Petra Chappell said in the summary.

The summary also made mention of a Winchmore weather reading, of a minimum temperature of just 1.3 degrees recorded on January 18.

It was the fourth lowest Janu-

ary minimum at the station since records began to be collated in 1928.

Meanwhile, average temperatures for the month could not be released at the Winchmore station, due to an absence of data for 11 days.

Ms Chappell told the Guardian the absence may have been due to broken equipment, repairs or maintenance.

A calculation by the Guardian of the maximums recorded for the remaining 20 days, showed an average maximum of 22.17 degrees, not much lower than the long term average mean daily maxiumum for the station of 22.4 degrees.

Rainfall measured 40.5 millimetres over the month’s 31 days, less than the long term average of 56 millimetres.

Pass the potato fritters, please Getting back to basics and learning how to cook cheap meals will help many people experiencing hardship, a foodbank operator says.

Many people no longer know how to make a meal from basics like a can of sweetcorn or bag of potatoes, said Masterton Foodbank co-ordinator Maureen Potts. In the last three months of 2013, the foodbank provided 521 food parcels - up nearly 100 on the same period the previous year.

Masterton Work and Income also approved 2090 hardship assistance grants of $560,903.09 including 847 totalling $91,960.80 for food.

“That’s just incredible. I can’t believe that,” Mrs Potts said.

Wairarapa Advocacy Service has also given out a number of food parcels and say people are living on instant noodles most days because that is all they can afford.

Food parcels are not neverending.

People could only receive three self-referred food parcels before they were sent to a budget adviser or Super Grans for help, Mrs Potts said.

They also provide leaflets about agencies who assist with drug and alcohol problems and family counselling.

“There is hardship out there.

We have had a lot of regular people coming for help. We already have a list of people who have had three parcels. I don’t

know how they are going to get on.”

The agency spent $6000 buying food to supplement that given by the community in the November food drive.

“It won’t be long and we will be out of food.”

The constant rising cost of food coupled with the loss of basic cooking skills, which weren’t being passed down, had resulted in a reliant generation, she said.

While buying packs of fish and chips might seem affordable, taking a bit of time people can make a meal from very little, like corn and potato fritters or pasta dishes, she advises.

“Those skills are being lost ... we are trying to give people a

hand up not a hand out. Some don’t even know basic cooking skills.

“We need to teach people to grow a garden. Everyone gets into strife and hardship but if you have just a few basics in the larder you will get through.”

However, you could lead a horse to water but you couldn’t force it to drink, Mrs Potts said.

“Super Grans offered cooking classes but no one turned up ... you feel like you are beating your head against a brick wall when that happens.”

People needed to watch their spending if struggling, she said. “You have got to pay the constants, rent power and food ... if you can’t afford it you shouldn’t have it.”

Prime Minister John Key gave his clearest hint yet that the general election is likely to be held before the G-20 global leaders’ meeting in Brisbane, in mid-November.

He told his weekly post-Cabinet press conference that it would be preferable not to leave the country to attend the highpowered meeting of the world’s most powerful 20 economies, which Australia has invited New Zealand to attend this year.

Describing the G-20 as a “complicating factor”, Key dodged questions about exactly when the election could be, but was lukewarm on attending an international meeting during the course of an election campaign.

“You can do anything you want to do, but I just don’t think that’s likely,” he said. Asked whether that meant an election would be before the November 15 meeting, Key replied: “Or after.”

However, the situation is all the more complicated by the fact that Key has invited several of the world leaders heading to Brisbane to make flying visits to New Zealand around the time of the G-20, including US President Barack Obama.

If they arrive before election day, their presence could be criticised as designed to influence the election, while also requiring much of the Prime Minister’s and other senior politicians’ campaigning time.

If held after the G-20 meeting, a four to six-week election campaign would push polling day into Christmas or beyond.

Under the Electoral Act, the latest date for the election is around mid-January, but conventional wisdom dictates that is a terrible time to hold a general election. Voters are likely to be disengaged or antagonised by an election at that time and too many voters would be out of their normal electorates on holiday, which would require them to cast special votes, and would likely affect voter turnout.

Key said he would announce the election sooner rather than later, reasoning there was little political advantage in announcing the date late.

Responses from world leaders to the invitations to visit are likely to be deciding factors.

Even attending the G-20 could be difficult.

Reckless behaviour horrifying Coen Lammers EDITOR

T

he majority of people in Mid Canterbury would have been stunned to read about the astonishing level of binge-drinking in the district in Friday’s Guardian.

We decided to use the phrase ‘Idiots’ in the headline because we simply could not think of a better way to describe our young citizens consuming dangerous amounts of alcohol to become famous on Facebook.

The editorial team discussed at length whether we should give these idiots any publicity but decided the wider community should be made aware of what goes on in the district.

This teenager in question drank an entire bottle of Jagermeister in the space of a few seconds through a hose as part of the online craze Nek Nominate. The game started with people skulling a beer on video and nominating one of their friends to do the same.

Almost predictably in our binge-obsessed society, some reckless individuals decided to take this pastime to a new, ridiculous level.

The story in Friday’s Guardian attracted horrified comments from around the country but intriguingly the more sensible reactions attracted a barrage of vitriol.

Instead of hanging their heads in shame, those involved in the stunt posted abuse towards the Guardian and more senseless drinking videos.

Aside from the fact that they seem to be able to throw away $50 on a bottle of Jagermeister, this unique community seems to have little care for their health, and clearly want to encourage others to be just as reckless.

Sadly, their lack of common sense is not only evident in their Sunday afternoon videos, but also their Monday Facebook post when the person in question brags about how ‘‘f…ed up’’ he still is, which would please his employer. Community leaders must be concerned, not just for the health of our youngsters but also what this behaviour does to the reputation of Ashburton.

TV3 turned the town into a national laughing stock after the recent mass brawl and this extreme binge-drinking by a small group will do little to enhance the perspective of the outside world.

South Street bumps I know the wheels of council at times turn slowly but not this slow.

In July 2012 I rang the local Port FM radio station when they had a mayoral talkback on one Saturday morning.

The mayor answered my call and I told him about the condition of South Street.

He asked me about the rumours going on.

I said to him forget about the rumours and asked when was the problem going to be fixed.

He said he would look at the problem on the way home.

It is 18 months since it was brought to his attention.

Still nothing has happened.

hat would you say if a dairy farmer took full responsibility for the actions of his relief milker and copped a $45,000 fine in the process?

All the while, human and industrial effluent leaks almost daily into our major rivers and harbours with very little mention.

Wairarapa dairy farmer Selwyn Donald accepted that as the farm owner, the buck stopped with him. There’s something wrong with a picture where a farmer or business gets pinged but council sewerage spills are either covered by “emergency discharge consents” or a slap by the wettest of wet bus tickets.

Last July, Hamilton City Council was “sentenced” after it released about the same volume of human effluent into the Waikato River as happened on Mr Donald’s farm.

Did Hamilton cop the $600,000 fine the media talked about? Did the guy at Hamilton responsible get charged just like Mr Donald did? No way. That was all traded down to stream restoration, planting and fencing near to where the council spill took place. Restorative justice. The guy fingered saw all charges “dropped” against him because Hamilton pleaded guilty.

Having been in a similar position to Mr Donald myself and I guess Hamilton, I am a big fan of restorative justice but why is its application so hit and miss under the RMA? Mr Donald pleaded guilty, just like Hamilton did, but instead of the fine going towards stream restoration and technology to prevent it recurring, it’s been vacuumed up by the system.

I am not the only one thinking this. Towards the end of last year, Environment Court Judge Craig Thomson posed a similar question.

In a speech, Judge Thomson called for more imaginative RMA sentencing guidelines.

farms (and businesses) who treat RMA fines and convictions as a “cost of doing business”, he added those farmers who commit one-off unintentional breaches should have access to diversion.

Judge Thomson recognises the RMA can be as subtle as a brick through a plate glass window. If a regional council wants to make an example of a farmer then judges seem to have little discretion. That’s why Judge Thomson said what he said.

He’s probably seen occasions where being tough is more deserved, but less so, when he’s got a farmer before him who’s clearly not a bad egg.

Criminalising good people doesn’t serve the interests of

justice whereas restorative justice could see the value of fines put to work for the environment instead.

It is not exactly one rule for all as the three spills into Lake Wakatipu over summer show.

Nor is it one rule for all with massive ecoli readings near a diving platform in Wellington or Auckland Council warning swimmers there.

Our council here in Ashburton needs to seriously up its game with urban wastewater.

If you want a laugh, apparently the central Wellington closure is due partially to “rural land” in the catchment. The only farm I see in Wellington is the one growing regulations and that’s the rub.

Last year, Wellington City Council released millions of litres of sewage into Wellington’s south coast without a resource consent and yes, there was mention of a $600,000 fine (again).

The result is a Tui advert: “Council fined for pollution and the CEO prosecuted. Yeah Right!”

Wellington’s previous form includes 2011, where for 12 hours, sewage was left flowing freely into the harbour. That saw it slapped with a $750 infringement notice. Like wow, that sends a message.

Sentencing flexibility is needed to separate the genuinely remorseful from the roosters and rogues.

We have that flexibility in all aspects of our justice system except it seems when the RMA is involved and except when it seems you are not a council.

It’s time to change that.

In brief Boys on murder charge Six teenagers assaulted and then chased a drunk man, causing him to trip and fall from a wall and die from severe head injuries, a Perth murder trial has heard. The youths, aged between 14 and 16, are on trial in the Perth Children’s Court accused of murdering 28-yearold Tauri Litchfield in Mandurah, south of Perth, in March last year.

In her opening address yesterday, prosecutor Amanda Forrester said Mr Litchfield had been drinking with friends after the Mandurah Crab Fest when he had an argument with his girlfriend about whether he should drive. The trial continues.

School hostages killed An armed student has entered a Moscow school and taken more than 20 teenagers hostage in an incident that also claimed the lives of a policeman and a teacher, security officials says.

‘Blame game’ launched Anti-whaling campaigners and Japan have engaged in a fresh war of words after a Sea Shepherd ship clashed with Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean.

Japan asked the Netherlands to take measures against the Dutch-registered Bob Barker after it collided with a Japanese whaling ship.

In Tokyo, chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga condemned environmental group Sea Shepherd.

“The sabotage activity was extremely dangerous,” Suga told reporters.

“It is unforgivable.

“As a government, we are ask-

ing the Netherlands, where the ship is registered, to take practical measures.”

Sea Shepherd says its ship was deliberately struck by the Yushin Maru No.2 in retaliation for the group preventing any whales being captured for more than a week.

Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt has ordered an investigation.

Bob Brown, former Greens leader and chairman of Sea Shepherd Australia, says that isn’t good enough.

Four men have been burnt to death in eastern India as suspected punishment for stealing cattle from a rival criminal gang. The four charred bodies were found in a village in West Bengal state close to the border with Bangladesh on Sunday evening, the police commissioner of nearby Siliguri city said yesterday. By GaBrielle Dunlevy Schapelle Corby’s case for parole has been heard behind closed doors by Indonesian authorities, who won’t reveal if it recommended her release from a Bali jail.

The parole hearing was

the last major hurdle for the 36-year-old convicted drug smuggler before her probable release from Kerobokan Prison.

Akbar, a spokesman for the Indonesian Corrections Directorate General, confirmed yesterday the hearing had taken place in Jakarta last week.

“Yes, the parole hearing has been conducted, last week, on Thursday to be exact,” he told reporters.

“But we can’t tell the result yet. Let’s wait.”

The decision to grant parole rests with Justice Minister Amir Syamsuddin.

If the recommendation was in favour of parole, and it is approved, Corby could be released within days, after more than nine years behind bars.

Mr Syamsuddin has already said publicly he could see no reason why Corby’s parole bid should be rejected.

“Liquidity conditions are tightening as policymakers crack down on the shadow banking system, and as the tide of rapid credit growth remains vulnerable to a rapid about-turn,” ANZ chief economist Cameron Bagrie said.

■ CLOVER ROOT WEEVIL PARASITE

Insecticide impact tested

Trials are under way in a white clover crop at Barrhill, to determine the impact of insecticides on a parasitic wasp imported to control clover root weevil.

AgResearch entomologist Mark McNeill has been working in the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) trial plot on Malcolm Cairns’ farm, where the destructive weevil has established a foothold in a second year stand of white clover.

The paddock has been divided into 30 metre segments, and alternate strips have been sprayed with Mavrik – a synthetic pyrethroid, which controls a wide range of insects and mites, but has proved gentle on beneficial insects, such as ladybirds, lacewings and spiders.

In particular, the scientists are interested in the impact of the spraying programme on a parasitic wasp introduced from Ireland to control clover root weevil.

The aim is to find a product that will target other pest insects such as aphids and mirids, without interrupting the life cycle of the parasitoid.

“We are looking at the effect of a range of insecticides on the weevil, parasitised weevil and the adult wasp,” he said.

“Mavrik was quite benign on the weevil and the parasitoid in the lab and this field sampling is the second stage of the project.”

Before and after spray samples of weevils are collected using a leaf vacuum from both sprayed

and unsprayed areas.

Back in the labroratory, the weevils are counted and the females frozen before dissection to see whether they are carrying the wasp larvae.

“We hope the parasitised weevil level will be the same in both samples,” Mr McNeill said.

The insecticide was applied when the adult wasp numbers were low, but the next sgenera-

tion wasp pupae were waiting to hatch in the litter under the crop.

Between now and May adult wasp numbers will build up and parasitise the weevils.

The wasp eggs will winter over inside the weevil, emerging as pupae about September.

While the weevil does most damage in its larval stage, attacking nodules on clover roots, adults are currently feeding on

the plant’s foliage, as their reproductive systems develop. They will then mate and disperse, hopefully carrying the parasite with them.

Because insecticides are only effective on adults, leaving the pests eggs and pupae to re-infest next season’s crop it is necessary to allow the weevil population to flourish at selected sites to build up parasite numbers.

While clover root weevil larvae cause the most damage, adults feed on the foliage.

Primary sector a viable career path for university graduates Abby Hull had three job offers waiting for her by the time she graduated university.

“The primary industry is a strong space for careers with all the new technology, compliance and requirements on farm,” she said.

“The industry requires a lot more grads now, so there are plenty of jobs out there.”

The primary sector often goes unnoticed as a viable career path for many young people, even though it is one of the most lucrative industries in the country.

Federated Farmers reports that agriculture, together with the food and forestry sectors generate 70 per cent of New Zealand’s merchandise export earnings.

So it’s no wonder that graduates in the primary sector earn an average salary of $55,000, well above the national average of $46,000.

After finishing her Bachelor of Applied Science (now known as AgriScience) at Massey University, Abby was offered two different jobs with banks and another with Dairy NZ as a graduate consulting officer.

She chose Dairy NZ, and after six months she moved up to a more senior consulting role where she is today.

Young Farmers, Beef+Lamb NZ and Dairy NZ have joined forces and for the past three years have been running Get Ahead Career Experience Days.

There are 10 days held around the country annually and over 1000 students attend to hear from successful industry professionals and learn about different career pathways in the primary sector.

They are also able to meet with representatives from universities and training centres.

Dairy NZ estimates the primary industry will need at least 1250 agriculture-related graduates every year for sustainable growth.

On average just over twothirds of rural New Zealand students are completing their secondary education, compared to the 76 per cent national average, according to KPMG. The Get Ahead Career Experience Days begin in Gore, March 3, Oamaru on March 5, and Christchurch on March 13.

Cow attacks man, breaks leg

“A 23-year-old man was herding some cows before it appears one turned and knocked him off his motor

bike, breaking his femur,” Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter base manager Chris Moody said.

He said the Norsewood volunteer fire brigade helped clear out a landing zone on the farm about 1km north of the rural town on State Highway 2.

“He was in a stable condi-

tion ... the femur is the biggest bone in your body and there is the risk of future arterial damage, so it was quite a serious job.”

Norsewood Chief Fire Officer Terrance Ahern said the 23-year-old was bringing cattle into the cow shed at about 6.30am when the herd forced him into a fence and off the

bike, causing his leg injury and cuts to his body.

“Ambulance staff were already there when we arrived, and he was conscious and breathing,” he said.

He said the man was a Norsewood resident and works on the 600-cow dairy farm.

New rules proposed for importing palm kernel expeller (PKE) are aimed at preventing “hardware disease” in dairy cattle and making stock food safer.

The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) wants the PKE screened through a four millimetre mesh, and to tighten traceability regulations for all imported livestock feed.

PKE is the by-product of palm oil production, used primarily as a supplementary animal feed in the dairy industry.

Wide-ranging processing, transportation and storing PKE has created a quality assurance problem for farmers.

The product has been at the centre of several contamination scares, after metal fragments pierced animals’ stomach walls – known within the industry as “hardware disease”.

In January the Disputes Tribunal awarded a Carterton farmer $5760, to cover the cost of two cows which died after ingesting rocks and metal shards thought to have been in PKE, although the suppliers International Nutritionals (INL) denied this.

Federated Farmers has voiced support for the proposed new screening requirement.

“From April 21, when the screening is set to commence, confidence in PKE as an imported animal feed should improve,” Federated Farmers president Bruce Wills said.

“PKE is a recycled waste by-product of Palm Oil production. It does not drive that industry’s demand, just as plastic recycling does not drive demand for petrochemicals.

“If PKE isn’t used as supplementary animal feed, it is otherwise composted, burnt as waste and even sold as fuel for furnaces.

“Being a by-product it is a relatively low value product. This perhaps explains anecdotal reports of foreign objects, like metal shards, being found in feed here.

These shards, which could be from harvesting, processing and even shipping, pose an obvious risk to animal health.

“While the product is currently screened overseas and treated to prevent unwanted organisms from entering New Zealand, additional screening here will add confidence.”

Last week Federated Farmers staff discussed biosecurity objectives with officials from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board.

Mr Wills said farmers needed absolute assurance that PKE entering New Zealand was consistent with what was on the accompanying phytosanitary certificates.

The new regulations will be issued under notice by the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997.

A draft document is available on the MPI’s website, for comment until March 6.

BEEF NZ beef returns in overseas markets are largely unchanged from a fortnight ago. In the US, domestic lean beef prices remain at record levels for January but the import market has stayed stubbornly flat.

NZ lean beef production is currently seasonally high, especially bull meat.

MARKET REPORT Demand for NZ lamb has been firm through December-January. The outlook for Easter trade demand is strong and exporters appear to be comfortable with the price premiums being achieved for chilled product exports.

However, they’re also aware of the need to support the volumes that the big retailers require for both seasonal demand peaks and throughout the rest of the year.

The Chinese market is quiet at the moment as much of the country shuts down as Chinese New Year celebrations commence.

In addition to the holiday period, the Chinese market has eased recently as much larger volumes out of Australia hit the market.

Negotiations for product delivered after the New Year period look to have softened in comparison to the levels achieved last year.

If it persists it will push up the cow slaughter and help take some pressure of domestic lean beef supplies

DAIRY Prices for dairy commodities have pushed higher still with skim milk powder now priced slightly above whole milk powder.

Butter and cheese are also starting to move higher but still have some way to go to catch up with the milk powders.

Demand for dairy commodities is still very firm meaning any additional supply coming out of NZ is being rapidly absorbed by the market. Fonterra has increased the volumes of product on offer at the next GlobalDairyTrade event and at subsequent events.

But given the current state of the market this additional volume is unlikely to push down prices. The next GDT event falls within the Chinese New Year holiday so it is possible we may see less Chinese buyers participating, but in past years the holiday hasn’t had any real impact on participant levels.

Dairy commodity prices are generally strong across the globe with US domestic pricing moving higher during January.

In Europe dairy prices are generally very high but butter pricing has started to retreat as more butter becomes available from private storage schemes.

More foreign butter is also entering Europe, particularly NZ butter, as European prices have been much higher than other markets so it has been worthwhile for traders to pay the big import tariffs associated with getting product into the EU.

■ Preheat the barbecue (with lid) or oven to 190°C. Place tomatoes and courgettes onto baking tray and drizzle with olive oil.

Cook for 7 minutes then drain and place in a bowl. Drizzle with 2 teaspoons olive oil and stir.

■ Drizzle the mussels with remaining oil and heap them onto the hot plate side of the barbecue and close the lid.

■ When the mussels start to open

remove them and quickly pull from the shell and place into a bowl. Make sure you keep a few in the shell for a garnish. Add risoni, tomatoes, courgettes, lemon juice, coriander, onion and chilli flakes, season and combine.

■ Garnish with some mussels kept in their shell and serve hot.

■ RED CROSS GIFT

Quilt conveyed warm message

By Kathleen Stringer Don’t think because the skies are black, the sun can’t shine again.

A very optimistic saying and one which we could all learn from.

While such messages are popular today it actually comes from a rather bleak period in our nation’s history – the Second World War. The saying was embroidered on a rather large quilt which was sent to the military hospital in Hanmer Springs to be used by soldiers convalescing.

While I am sure the soldiers appreciated its cheery message and warmth, back here in Ashburton, where it was created, its warming message is the least of its value.

In its patriotic red white and blue it lists all the members of the Red Cross from the communities of Flemington, Ashton, Waterton and Wheatstone.

Although most of the names are female, there are some men as well as, one assumes, servicemen connected with the area.

As a directory of people in small rural locations it is invaluable; adults are referred to by their surname, although, thankfully, with their initials so if you

are looking for a Soal, for example, you can be pretty sure who is included and who wasn’t.

Children have their full names embroidered.

Managing such large quilts is a problem for museums. They have to be rolled, wrapped and hung, so getting it out to look at is no easy activity.

Thankfully this and all our named quilts have been transcribed and photographed, so if you are interested if discovering one of your relations (or maybe you yourself) is listed on them we should be able to let you know.

After the war the quilts were packaged up and returned to the groups who made them.

This quilt, along with others, was hung in the Ashburton Red Cross rooms, before receiving a well earned rest here at the museum.

These quilts are part of the collection you wish could talk.

Who embroidered the names, how long did it take? How many soldiers did it warm and protect and what were their stories?

We probably won’t be able to answer most of the questions, but at least we know who was involved in creating such an interesting artefact.

The following is a letter written to the Upper Ashburton Road Board in 1931 by a man explaining why he couldn’t pay his rates.

“I am quite prepared for whatever penalty is required.

The government has the mortgage on the stock and first and second mortgages on the land so you can send the account to them.

“The Government has inflated land values up to six pound an acre and its present value on today’s market is three pound per acre, not a penny more.

Three and three quarter pence per pound for wool and twelve shillings per head for lambs.

“You can prove them prices on Pyne Gould Guinness’s books if you doubt my word. I have worked here for three and a half years and balanced everything up and I have had the large wage of seven pound a year when all losses are taken out so you need not be shocked at so many men being put off

their land for, if they are all getting as well paid for their work as I have been, I think it is a blessing for the depression to come.

“There is a road leading past this place. I have got brain fried making appeals to you to do something to it. It all met with the same response as the rain does on the duck’s back.

“You have collected rates off it now for I may say fifty years and you have never put a wheelbarrow full of shingle on it, its condition is a scandal for any board for gorse and ruts and that’s praising it.

“I have got no money to pay rates so you will have to do what the American President is doing. Give us all a year’s holiday and see what happens after that.”

I remain Yours sincerely etc.

The minutes record that rates amounting to sixteen pounds, thirteen shillings and seven pence were written off.

Swimmers finding top form

The Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team has been uncovering some good form at the regional level ahead of national events, starting with the New Zealand Junior Championships in Wellington from February 14-16.

The Canterbury Championships, for 13 years and over, in Dunedin last week and the Canterbury Junior Championships, 12 years and under, were held in Timaru over this weekend.

Over the two meets Ashburton won 17 Canterbury titles and a swag of medals.

Four swimmers won triple titles.

Lucy Clough took the girls 15 and 16 years 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, Aimee Elliott won the girls’ 13 and 14 years 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, Joachim Routhan took out the boys’ 11 years 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and Cameron Slee claimed titles in the boys’ 10 years 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke. Caitlin Johnstone won two titles in the girls’ 15 and 16 years 50m breaststroke and 400m individual medley.

Leah Berquist and Matthew Harford won the girls’ and boys’ titles respectively in the 13 and 14 years 200m butterfly while Courtney Elliott claimed the Canterbury title in the girls’ 10 years 200m breaststroke with a 10-second personal best time.

A total of 24 medals were won by the junior team in Timaru, with standout swimmers being Routhan with three gold, two silver and two bronze) and Slee with three gold, silver and two bronze. Both boys also won two relay medals after they teamed up with Jay Martin and Kalen Tait to take third in the boys’ 12 years and under 200m freestyle and medley relays.

The senior team also brought home their share of medals from Dunedin with 27 in total over the five days, including Clough and Aimee Elliott who both claimed three gold, a silver and a bronze, and Harford who won gold, three silver and four bronze.

Next up is the New Zealand Junior Championships with eight swimmers heading away. # Grace Sommerville represented New Zealand in the Australian 10km Open Water Championships in Perth on Sunday. Sommerville finished 12th in a time of 2 hours 12:21 and was the second New Zealander home. Grace is now taking a well-deserved week off before returning to training prior to taking up a scholarship to an American university.

Medal haul impresses coach

The Ashburton College rowers produced another strong performance at the South Island Championships at Lake Ruataniwha at the weekend.

College crews qualified for 14 A finals, 6 B finals and came away with six medals, impressing coach Steve Beveridge especially after they were faced with an unusual situation in the heats.

The regatta was raced under time trials over 1500m on Saturday before the regulation

2km held starts for Sunday’s finals.

“I didn’t think we would do quite as well in the time trials as what we did,” Beveridge said.

“It was a bit different racing against the clock and not having a boat beside you.

“It wasn’t great from a spectators’ point of view watching boats come down in Indian file all day.

“Sunday was better.

“Although we started out a bit sluggish some crews really performed.”

The highlight came at the end

of the regatta when the girls’ novice quad of Fran ConnellyWhyte, Grace Wilson, Dana Logan-Leach, Veronica Wall and cox Mady Evans won gold in what was the last race of the regatta for the college.

There were two silvers in the double with the under 15 girls double of Wall and Jordyn Kell, and the novice combination of Sarah Hazelhurst and Wilson.

The third silver went to Matthew Beveridge in the under 17 boys’ single, with Benji Barry coming in eight seconds behind him to take the bronze.

The other bronze was won by the novice coxed four of LoganLeach, Connelly-Whyte, Hazelhurst, Kell and Evans.

The college crews now have a month to prepare for the South Island Secondary Schools Regatta on March 8-9 at Lake Ruataniwha.

That will be followed by the Canterbury Secondary Schools event a week later at Lake Hood before the big one on the calendar, the Maadi Cup National Secondary School Championships at Lake Ruataniwha from March 24-30.

Tourists’ batting still under the pump

By DaviD Leggat In the unlikely event that India’s test cricket batsmen were unsure what to expect in the test series, they got another broad hint in Whangarei yesterday.

The second day of their twoday game against a New Zealand XI was given over to batting practice, and that included a fair dose of shorter-pitched bowling.

Anton Devcich made it clear how he thinks the national team will approach the task of bowling to India’s quality batting line-up.

“The Indian guys have been found out with the short ball a little bit and I think they’ll cop more in the test series,” Devcich said. “We had a couple of tall bowlers who generated a little more bounce off the wicket.

“We’ve noticed they’ve got out a lot pulling and hooking

and thought we may as well test them out on that.”

He was impressed with what he saw, as they made their way to 313 for seven, responding to the New Zealand XI’s 262 for nine declared, before declaring to end the match.

All the batsmen spent at least an hour in the middle, acting captain Rohit Sharma made 59, Ajinkya Rahane 60, while Cheteshwar Pujara - test average at a roaring 66 - made 33.

India’s batsmen ooze class.

Then again, they were expected to take lumps out of New Zealand’s bowlers in the ODI series.

It happened far less frequently than the doom and gloom merchants had anticipated, which is much to New Zealand’s credit.

The fact neither captain MS Dhoni, nor his deputy Kohli bothered to go to Whangarei suggests that, as two of the three tour selectors, they know their minds already.

The Mid Canterbury junior representative tennis side came out on top of Ellesmere in their first home match of the summer at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Sunday. Mid Canterbury had already played Malvern, with all four grades winning, and North Canterbury.

The 12s swept Ellesmere 16-0 to continue a strong season where they beat Malvern and North Canterbury 13-3. The 14s and 10s both won 10-6 with the boys leading the way, winning five of their six matches and combined with the girls to win three mixed-doubles matches in each clash. After having two close losses, going down on count-back against North Canterbury, the 16s finally won a tight battle 9-7 where the girls won all of their singles and doubles and combined with the boys to win three of the four mixed doubles matches. In brief One expensive logo Five squiggly lines have cost the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) $500,000 to roll out across the country. The largely governmentfunded sport agency defended the price tag on its new logo at yesterday’s unveiling, saying it would generate more commercial investment in the long term.

Australian Sports Commission CEO Simon Hollingsworth said the upfront cost had to be weighed against future corporate benefits.

“We believe that in the medium and long term that this investment is going to generate significantly more revenue for the AIS, which will then be invested back into sport,” Mr Hollingsworth told reporters in Canberra.

Hogg not ready to retire Perth Scorchers spinner Brad Hogg wants to play Twenty20s for at least two more years, but says it might be better for Australian cricket if James Muirhead beats him for a spot at this year’s World Cup in Bangladesh. Hogg turns 43 on Thursday, but the evergreen spinner is showing no signs of slowing down more than 20 years on from his Sheffield Shield debut.

The left-arm tweaker remains a fan favourite at the WACA, with his performances helping the Scorchers reach the BBL finals for a third straight year. Hogg retired in 2008 with seven Tests, 123 ODIs and two T20Is to his name. But a successful return with the Scorchers in 2011 saw Hogg recalled to the international set-up in 2012 for Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign in Sri Lanka. - AAP

Czechs into quarters The Czech Republic, seeking a third consecutive Davis Cup title, moved into the quarter finals while France swamped Australia and Germany courted controversy as first round ties reached their conclusion yesterday. The Czechs held the upper hand 2-1 going into the reverse singles against the Netherlands and Tomas Berdych bagged the all-important third point with a three-set win over lowly-ranked Thiemo de Bakker.

The Dutch claimed the final dead rubber when Igor Sijsling saw off Lukas Rosol giving the Czechs a 3-2 victory and a last eight date with Japan, first-time quarter-finalists after defeating Canada in Tokyo.

Germany, who held an unassailable 3-0 lead over five-time former winners Spain in Frankfurt, soured their win by claiming three of their players were unfit to play.

Arsenal back on top Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored twice as Arsenal recorded a 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace yesterday that took them back to the top of the English Premier League. Making his first league start since the season’s opening day, Oxlade-Chamberlain scored both goals in the second half to send Arsenal two points above Manchester City, who hosted thirdplaced Chelsea overnight. The result put Arsene Wenger’s side back into winning ways after the 2-2 draw at Southampton that cost them top spot, while Palace were left one place above the relegation zone after a first defeat in three league games.

Bancroft leads from the front Front marker Helen Bancroft held on gamely to keep the chasing riders at bay to deservedly take victory in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s Dean Cooksley Memorial race in Methven on Sunday.

Over 70 riders took to the roads around Methven for the 45km handicap event, but front marker Bancroft rode strongly

to deservedly take the win.

Local rider Barrie Begg showed a clean pair heels in a large bunch sprint to the line to secure second and Michael Kennish stormed into third, with Phil Duff right on this tail in fourth.

The flying Scotsman Gregor Robertson was fifth and Kathy Askin rounded out the top six.

Tony Ward rode the course in a slick 63.27 minutes to set the fastest time from co-markers Nathan Tew and Brad Hudson.

Earlier the juniors and division 2 raced over 17km.

Isabella Roulston made it a day to remember securing the win while Connie Davidson continued her hot run of form to take second.

Ryan Jackson pulled out a top shelf effort to secure the final podium position and in doing so took second fastest time.

Abe O’Donnell was fourth with his brother Bailey fifth to take fastest time honours, riding the distance in 32.48 minutes.

Rachel Russell took victory in division 2 holding out a good field.

Keryn O’Donnell hit the line strongly to take out second placing, and the fastest time honours went with Janette Hooper in third.

Jenny and Al Gilchrist were fourth and fifth respectively with Irene Duff sixth.

Next week the club travels to Rakaia to contest a 50km handicap event.
