Soaring water consumption is likely to see hosing restrictions imposed in Ashburton this weekend. Mayor Angus McKay made a pitch for urban Ashburton to have a restrictionfree summer, but yesterday said he was disappointed that people had abused the unlimited watering offer. During Wednesday’s 30°C-plus temperatures,
consumption soared and he said he saw hoses running during the heat of the day, the most ineffective time for watering. “I’m disappointed with the attitude of the people of Ashburton. I fought for this, we got it and common-sense has gone out the door,” Mr McKay said. Last month he pushed for Ashburton to run through the summer without hosing restrictions, believing that by using common-sense and through an educa-
tion programme on appropriate watering, consumption would be kept within manageable levels. During Wednesday’s summer high, consumption hit 23,200 cubic metres, not far short of the council’s total consent, 25,000 cubic metres.
