Art gallery faults exposed BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A flawed interior layout and faulty environmental controls in Ashburton’s new art gallery mean the complex is likely to cost significantly more to run and its opening could be delayed, says curator Shirin Khosraviani. She told Ashburton District councillors yesterday they would need to up their grant by $64,000 next year to ensure the new gallery had sufficient staff to open its doors.
An additional staff member was needed because the new building’s offices and workrooms were separated from the public areas. “Galleries are about dialogue and they should focus on people. The building’s structure affects the functioning and the opening of the gallery. It will cost more to run and that’s because of the way it’s designed,” she said. Ms Khosraviani said the gallery committee had asked for the floor layout to be changed
but this had not happened. The gallery committee was then forced to raise money to build a reception area in the gallery where the extra staff member would be based. “We currently have three full timers, but that’s grossly inadequate and we’ll struggle to meet our goals. Staff working at one end will have no idea what is happening in the rest of the building . I want people to come into our gallery and see people,” she said.
If the council granted the gallery the extra money that would take its annual allocation to $300,000, and Ms Khosraviani said she was happy for the grant to remain at that level for two or three years. “But if we don’t have the money for extra staff we’ll be at a point where we cannot operate in that building.” There were also on-going problems with environmental control units that meant collection items could not be moved
into the new complex, Ms Khosraviani said. “We were to move last week but I cancelled that because the building was not performing to the standard we need. The environmental controls are very erratic. We can’t move anything into this building until we can see two weeks of stable temperature data.”
