The Ashburton Showgrounds will become a hive of activity today as the Ranfurly Shield rolls into Ashburton for Mid Canterbury’s shot at the coveted Log O’ Wood against big brothers, Can-

terbury this afternoon.

An event which has been months in the planning, a shot at the Ranfurly Shield on home turf, when you don’t actually hold the trophy is a rare occurrence and a luxury that Mid Canterbury has enjoyed on three previous occasions.

boss, Ian Patterson the chance to challenge for the shield is a huge moment in his time at the helm.

“It’s the Ranfurly Shield, it doesn’t come around every week,” he said.

“It has been such a longstanding part of New Zealand’s rugby history and to get another

chance at it is something really special. And to be involved in the process of it all is something I’m quite excited about.”

Just how many people will flow through the gates this afternoon is hard to estimate.

Previous games for the Ranfurly Shield have registered crowd sizes of 6000, 5500 and

4750 so somewhere within the vicinity of 4000 isn’t impossible.

“It’s a hard one to judge,” Patterson said earlier this week.

“It’s probably not like it was 20 years ago when the town would shut down for the afternoon.”

Kick off for today’s match is 2:35pm with entry $20 for adults and children under 17 free.

Trust all set to rewrite its future

With the last of its businesses sold, the Ashburton Trust is about to reshape its future.

The sale of the Tinwald Tavern complex was signed off this week and that completes a sale package that over the past year has included Speights Alehouse, The Somerset Grocer and the Hotel Ashburton.

And now it’s time to look at where the trust will take its business, said board chair Fay Watson.

In some ways it was like reinventing the trust, she said, and

with that in mind, Watson has gone back to its founding documents to see what its original business model looked like in 1950.

“We need to look at what our purpose is in life, where we put our money. It’s an exciting time to be involved; we’ll be setting a template for the trust going forward,” she said.

The trust board will hold a strategic planning session next month and while it won’t have all the answers after that, it should have a much clearer sense of direction for its new business environment

as a landlord, Watson said.

“We need to look at an investment strategy. We’ll be in a position where we’ll have solid cash flow forecasts and as a landlord to maintain we need to set long term maintenance plans.”

As well as looking at its role as a landlord, the trust board would also be looking at its role in the community and its policy around grants and donations.

Currently it was difficult for the trust to make long term commitments to grants and donations because what had occurred in the past might not necessarily hap-

pen going forward, she said.

“We need some internal guidelines ourselves so we can set guidelines for the community.”

The trust would have funding pools through both the Lion Foundation and Somerset House charitable foundation but it needed to look at what other areas of community funding it could become involved in, Watson said.

“Social housing is a classic. The whole thing is really an open bit of paper. We could be involved in a large project or in several smaller projects. It’s almost like rewriting the trust.”

Once two large maintenance projects were wrapped up – reroofing the Hotel Ashburton and Tinwald Tavern, the trust could look at a steady income stream that would fund a solid maintenance programme for its properties as well as a range of community projects, she said.

When the trust’s annual meeting is held later this year, Watson said the message would be a different and very positive one for the community.

“We’ll have a positive bottom line and we haven’t had that for yonks.”

You need to read the book before you bin it

There are just two messages for users of Ashburton’s new wheelie bin service – read the book and don’t use the bin until September 1.

Its title might not be the most exciting, but the brightly coloured booklet that will arrive taped to one of your bins is compulsory reading.

The messages that booklet delivers will make the difference for owners of the Ashburton District’s wheelie bins between getting it right and getting it wrong when they step into the new world of kerbside recycling.

“Basically it’s everything you need to know about using your new bin, what the bins are to be used for, and what can go in each one,” said waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin.

Over the next two weeks bins will be delivered to properties in the collection area and over the

final week of August drivers will be undertaking route familiarisation training, he said.

“You’ll see the trucks out but they won’t be picking up any bins until September 1.”

Each bin is numbered and this will be coded against a sticker placed on the side of each bin.

This will display the address the bin belongs to and its collection day.

It’s an almost foolproof system that’s been tried and tested in many parts of New Zealand, Goodwin said.

When collected bins will not be weighed but the number will be recorded.

The number of collections of each bin will be totalled for the year and while user-pays is not part of the deal at the moment, it’s likely to be introduced in the future, he said.

Ashburton’s will be a two bin system, one for recycling and one for rubbish, with a green

crate for glass. It will not include a bin for organic waste.

That one’s a long way off, Goodwin said.

“We have smaller operators doing a good job and we don’t want to sink them plus our studies show there’s already a lot of good green waste diversion going on.”

While the introduction of the wheelie bin service has been well planned, he’s anticipating the only hiccough might come with people trying to use the service before it officially kicks in on September 1.

The Methven Heritage Centre will be a blaze of colour from tonight as two local artists stage what has become an annual exhibition for the pair.

More than 50 works by Jen Dearborn and Susie Millichamp are hanging in the centre’s gallery, with the exhibition opening tonight and then running until September.

It’s the fifth year the two artists have joined forces and this year they’re calling their exhibition Colourists.

And that name says it all, Dearborn said.

“There’s a lot of work, a lot of colour and a lot of different styles

– oils, acrylics, water colours and mono prints.” Most works are landscapes, with the artists drawing inspiration from their local environment but these are supplemented by landscapes painted by Millichamp after a trip to France.

For Dearborn, the foray into colour is relatively new.

“I was quite mono tone a couple of years ago, but now I’ve gone quite wild with colour,” she said.

The exhibition contains works produced during the year and most have not been hung publicly before.

All are for sale and most years each artist sells a large number of works, Dearborn said.

Ashburton house prices appear to have hit a mid-winter speed bump, falling 1.4 per cent over the past 12 months.

QV statistics put the average price of a house sold in the Ashburton District in July at $346,274, down 0.4 per cent over three months and 1.4 per cent over a year.

The district is one of only three territorial authorities in the South Island to watch house prices drop over a 12 month period; the other two areas are Buller and Grey.

The most significant change in house prices over the past year

in the South Island has been in Mackenzie, up 32.2 per cent and Queenstown Lakes, up 20 per cent. Mackenzie’s prices are rising faster than in any other part of New Zealand.

Nationally values increased by 6.4 per cent over the past year.

The Christchurch market is also having a sluggish winter with valuer Daryl Taggart describing the market as stalling with properties becoming increasingly harder to sell.

“Finance is now the biggest hurdle for most buyers, especially for those who already own property and where a condition of the new purchase will be the sale of another property,” he

said. It was not uncommon now to see asking prices being reduced to achieve a sale, Taggart said.

An over supply of properties in the rental market meant Christchurch’s rents were also dropping, he said.

There are now 10 territorial authorities (including Queenstown Lakes) where the average value home now exceeds $1 million.

At the opposite end of the scale there are six areas where the average value is below $200,000.

This includes Clutha, $196,047.

Tararua retains its title as the cheapest place to buy with an average value of $173,629, up 11 per cent over the past year.

Battle for pedestrian safety

Rakaia mightn’t be the biggest town along State Highway One, but its community association chairman Neil Pluck hopes it might be the one that makes the most noise.

And by making a noise and becoming a ‘squeaking wheel’ he hopes the NZ Transport Agency might finally listen to residents’ request for pedestrian traffic lights on its section of the highway.

For years residents have diced with speeding traffic as they travelled from one side of the town to the other to access the local school and shops. And for years their pleas for help have fallen on deaf ears.

The ultimate answer was a pedestrian underpass, similar to that used to move cows from one side of a highway to another, Pluck said, but for that to be built the community would have had to cough up the cash.

When the idea was first mooted the anticipated cost was $500,000; 10 years down the track it could be double that, he said.

“The best we could get in the way of assistance was NZTA

At the time the community did not have an appetite for raising the money needed and the idea was shelved. The need for safe passage, however, did not go away, Pluck said.

Then the option of pedestrian lights was raised during discussions with a group of com-

munities with towns straddling the highway. Rakaia’s case was put and while there were no promises, there was a glimmer of hope that pedestrian lights could come on the work list – sometime, he said.

Rakaia knows it’s not alone in fighting to have the transport agency fund safe pedestrian access across the highway and knows it’s not alone in believing providing that access should

be the agency’s problem, not a community’s. “They’ve have to fund it really, it’s about getting people across their road.”

He’s still keen on the underpass option but thinks the community might have missed its chance on that one when it didn’t push hard enough 10 years ago.

This time round he’s determined the option of pedestrian lights won’t be left on the back burner.

“I email them every now and again just to keep reminding them. I know you have to be patient and you have to be realistic, but we’re not asking for something that’s stupid, the lights are a genuine issue.”

Rakaia was unique in that it had two bridges on its northern approach and that created issues around reducing speed from the current 70km/h to the ideal of 50km/h, Pluck said.

The big lesson learned from the underpass issue was that the community did not push hard enough once it had the transport agency’s ear; this time it wouldn’t be giving up, the reminders that something had to be done would keep coming, he said.

Every year Ashburton butchers roll out their best bangers and pitch them against the best of the rest of the country hoping to snag themselves a national tastiest snarler title.

And most years our home grown butchers come up trumps – we’ve won category awards and we’ve taken out the national title – a beef and blue cheese sausage created by Paddy Kennedy at Allenton Meats.

The competition offers opportunities for medals in categories ranging from traditional beef or pork through to gourmet sausag-

es where virtually anything goes providing the flavours work well together.

Sausages are judged prior to cooking on their inner and outer visual appearance and after cooking on appearance, aroma, texture, composition and taste.

Entries close on August 18 and freshly made sausages will be winging their way to Auckland and the judges’ table around September 20.

Gold medal winners in each of the 12 categories will then be mystery shopped and judged again to find the supreme winner.

Winners will be announced on October 19.

A report which led to the resignation of one of New Zealand’s most senior watchdogs will remain secret.

Auditor-General Martin Matthews quit yesterday an hour before the report into his handling of a fraud case was tabled in Parliament, saying his position was “untenable”.

The Officers of Parliament Committee, which commissioned the report, will not be releasing it to the public.

That prompted NZ First leader Winston Peters to allege a cover-up.

He said it appeared that the committee should not have approved Matthews’ appointment in the first place and it was now “trying to cover its derriere”.

Matthews was head of the Ministry of Transport when senior manager Joanne Harrison stole $725,000 through fake invoices made out to non-existent companies.

After Harrison was convicted and jailed earlier this year, the committee asked senior public servant Sir Maarten Wevers to review his suitability to remain in the role.

Opposition members on the committee were concerned that they had not been told the full story of Matthews’ handling of the fraud case.

Matthews, who received a draft version of Sir Maarten’s report in June, resigned before the committee had made a decision about his future.

June consents stable New home building in the Ashburton District is showing no sign of slowing, with the number of consents for new homes issued in June on par with June 2016, 13.

Those consents were among the 105 consents issued for all building work in June. For the year to date, however, consent numbers are well down – 472 compared to 557 for the first six months of 2016. For the year to June 30, 189 new home consents were issued for the district. Building consent amendments, however are well up, from 28 to 91 for the first six months of this year. These relate to changes to consents, usually around building materials.

Body by Opihi River A man was found dead in South Canterbury on Tuesday night. The 45-year-old was found by Opihi River, near Fairlie about 10.30pm.

The death is being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday. Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Quested said the death was being treated as suspicious, Fairfax reported. - NZME

Gunman targets dairies A lone man, carrying a gun, attempted to rob two dairies in Christchurch On Wednesday night.

The first was J Mart Dairy on Opawa Rd shortly before 7pm. The man entered the shop carrying a handgun and demanded money.

He left when he was challenged by the shopkeeper. Around half an hour later the same man demanded money at another dairy on the corner of Somerset Crescent and Brougham St. But he ran off without taking anything.

Boatie convicted

Martin Matthews Speaker David Carter said yesterday that the committee members “saw no value” in releasing the report because Matthews had stood down and put an end to the matter.

Carter said he could give an assurance that there was no criticism in Sir Maarten’s report of the vetting process for Matthews. He also ruled out any arrangement or settlement under which Matthews would agree to stand down on the condition that the report was withheld.

“No exit package was given,” he said.

Public Service Association national secretary Glenn Barclay said the decision to withhold the report was “not good enough”.

“The public need to feel that appointments to the office aren’t made lightly, especially when an elaborate fraud case like this has been hanging over the people involved.” - NZME

A recreational boatie has been convicted of manslaughter after it was found he failed to follow several safety procedures that then resulted in a death. Waitara man Teiron Jones was yesterday sentenced in the New Plymouth District Court and will have to pay $5000 reparation to the family of Erka Xu, who drowned. The pair had been out on a fishing trip in 2015 when they got into trouble while attempting to cross the Waitara Bar. The boat flipped – throwing both men into the water.

Maritime New Zealand said neither of the men had been wearing a life jacket. “Maritime rules make it mandatory for the skipper of a recreational boat to ensure everyone on board is wearing a life jacket at times of heightened risk.”

Search suspended Police have suspended search efforts for a man whose vehicle was found crashed down a bank in New Plymouth this week. Karl Roberts, 31, has not been seen or heard from since Tuesday. His vehicle was found down a bank on Uruti Rd about 3.30pm. Police say they believe Roberts lost control of the car, a green Subaru Impreza, before it slid off the road and down the bank; stopping close to a stream. “Following extensive searches on both Wednesday and today, police have suspended the physical search for Mr Roberts,” a police statement said.

Exhibitions rolled out

Not one but two shiny new exhibitions are being rolled out at the Ashburton Art Gallery tomorrow – showcasing works from the teeny-tiny to the larger than life.

On the big side of the scale is Anya Sinclair’s Forest Lives exhibition, which utilises acrylic on canvas to create large scale mythical landscapes and explore the relationship between nature and feeling.

Sinclair said the pieces were inspired by the bush around where she grew up in the Waitakere ranges and where she now dwells in Port Chalmers, Dunedin.

“As a child these were physical places in which to escape and be immersed in fantasy ... Forest Lives acts as a platform for the imaginings of its viewers.”

Forest Lives will kick off at 2pm tomorrow with a floor talk from Sinclair and will run until September 24.

One room over, intricate needle and thread creations will take the spotlight within a biennial exhibition by the Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild.

The latest offering, named the Joy of Stitching, showcases embroidery of different techniques and styles from the traditional to the contemporary.

Ashburton Art Gallery exhibitions assistant Nicole Bourke said this year’s collection is “exquisite” and features works that have had hours of painstaking work poured into them.

“Embroidery is a labour of love,” she said.

Embroiderers can also choose to enter the president’s choice category, which this year features a number of small, circular works inspired by the theme of ‘looking up’.

The Joy of Stitching will also kick off tomorrow with a few words from members of the Embroiderers’ Guild.

Farm owner fined for starving cows A Waikato farm owner has been fined after leaving a herd of cows to starve on his property.

It wasn’t until the 157 one-yearold dairy replacement heifers were moved from Shane Kingsley Torstonson’s farm at Kaihere, Morrinsville, that the alarm was raised.

Some were left for dead while seven simply disappeared in a case of neglect which has led to Ministry for Primary Industries issuing a warning for farmers about their responsibilities.

The 51-year-old appeared in the Morrinsville District Court this week and was convicted and fined $2700 after admitting he failed to ensure the physical and health needs of the cows in his care.

Ministry for Primary Industries spokesman, Brendon Mikkelsen, said Torstonson had the cows grazing at his 250ha farm from July 2015.

When the animals were transferred to a second grazier 10

months later, that grazier became immediately concerned about the condition of the animals.

A vet who was asked to assess the animals found signs that were consistent with being underfed for a prolonged period of time.

Mikkelsen said graziers were responsible for the animals in their care and must ensure they provide them with proper and enough food.

“A shortage of feed is no excuse. In this case seven animals were confirmed as having died and the whereabouts of a further six animals can’t be explained.

“This case serves as a timely reminder for farmers who send their animals off to a grazier to ensure those animals’ physical, health and daily feed requirements are being met. Irrespective of whether a grazing contract exists, it is prudent to inspect your animals to ensure their welfare needs are being met.”

the open-invite event, hosted by local Plunket staff Sue-ann Carr and Marise Jayne, and intended to bring together families within the community.

Many of the attendees meet weekly for coffee, but it was the first time the Plunket had held the soup meet.

“We thought we’d change it up … and it’s so nice to have a good turnout,” Carr said.

Today many of the mums who attended will meet again to partake in the Big Latch On – a breastfeeding event taking place simultaneously in various locations throughout the country.

Ashburton Art Gallery’s walls are once again a blank canvas, after the Ashburton Society of Arts wrapped up their 53rd annual exhibition recently.

For four weeks, visitors had the chance to immerse themselves in 480 pieces of local and national art. This year’s exhibition boasted works of all shapes, sizes and styles – pottery to portraits, sculptures, landscapes, photographs and more.

It’s estimated that more than 4000 visitors popped in to feast their eyes, including 200 on the sold-out opening night, at the beginning of July. A large number of works sold and are now being hung up or displayed in their new homes around New Zealand.

Ashburton Society of Arts spokesperson Mandy Casey said they’d received positive comments from visitors who were impressed by the range and calibre of the art, and the public space in which it was held.

“We’ve been overwhelmed with support from the Mid Canterbury community … and from visitors who stopped by while passing though Ashburton,” she said.

“It’s been really good.”

Prior to occupying the art gallery, the event would take place at the Tinwald Memorial Hall. Exhibitions assistant Nicole Bourke said it gained quick traction from there, becoming “a grand event on the Ashburton calendar”.

At this year’s opening night, the Russell Moon and Fail Premier Award was given to Marcia Scott for her work Global Spending.

A People’s Choice Award was also awarded after the event – taken home by Mark

People’s Choice Award winning sculpture Tui Feeding on Kowhai 2 – one of 480 works on display for the past month at the Ashburton Society of Arts Annual Exhibition.

The area of the gallery where the exhibition was held will not be bare for long. Two more exhibitions are on the way from the Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild and Anya Sinclair.

A

s a proud sporting region, today is a big deal for Mid Canterbury.

Today, we are on show to the rest of the country.

Today, our streets, buildings and faces will be beamed out to New Zealand.

Today, in a rugby sense, we are the showpiece. And so we must make the most of it.

The Ranfurly Shield is in town and our Mid Canterbury side will have a shot at lifting the most historic piece of rugby silverware in the country when they run out on to the Ashburton Showgrounds to tackle the might of Canterbury.

We can’t be too delusional and expect a success. But we can expect a bloody good game of rugby, because that’s what our Mid Canterbury boys are capable of producing.

A win would be a minor miracle and one of the biggest upsets in rugby’s illustrious history.

But most importantly we need to remember that the Ranfurly Shield doesn’t come to town very often.

Mid Canterbury, or in the old term, Ashburton County, will attempt to win it for the 15th time this afternoon.

On the 14 previous occasions they’ve come up short. Beaten by faster, bigger, stronger and more financially supported teams than themselves. And again, today, they meet a formidable foe in Canterbury – one of the most feared provinces in the land.

There’s no denying the challenge for the men today is huge.

And to expect a win would be like expecting snow on Christmas Day. Canterbury are a well skilled outfit. They have access to some of the best players available, guys who are professional rugby players.

Mid Canterbury is made up of everyday kind of folk. Guys who get up at the crack of dawn every morning and go and produce a 10-hour shift before heading off to footy practice.

So, while it might be hard to get behind a victory, because the laws of average would suggest it’s almost impossible.

We can get behind the team and the occasion.

There’s an opportunity to show everyone else just how passionate we can be.

If you’ve got something green, something gold or, even better, something that has a bit of both – wear it today.

And wear it with pride.

Not just pride in our rugby team, but in our district as a whole.

acebook memories app told me this week that I have been scratching out these weekly columns for four years now.

Seems like just yesterday I nervously hit the send button on my first one, which was almost immediately followed by a thought along the lines of “I have no idea what I’m doing here and this gig won’t last long”. Still feel the former is true.

In those four years I’m sure I have mentioned this before, but let’s face it, I often struggle to remember why I walked into a room of the house, let alone what I wrote in a newspaper column three years ago.

I worry about anti-bacterial everything these days. It’s seems every ad break on the telly has some sort of anti-bacterial product in it that claims to kill 99.9 per cent of germs.

It’s almost like they scare you into using their products, don’t you dare use a cloth to wipe your kitchen bench because you may as well be using a raw chicken thigh.

And the one I hate the most at the moment is the product you spray into the bog before you have a dump and it will deal to the smells from your “Devil’s donuts”. Has the inventor of this product sprayed it on to their butts to make sure it’s safe? I’m sorry but everybody’s s*#t stinks, get over it. Excuse the pun but I think that product is crap!

I’m far from a scientist or mathematician, but if you’re killing 99.9 per cent of germs, then you’re going to be knocking all the good ones on the head as well as the nasty ones? (Note well the question mark, as it was more a question than a statement).

The next question I have is, if we keep killing all the germs, won’t they find a way to combat that and maybe even mutate into super germs and resist whatever we throw at them? (Note well the question mark, still a question, but isn’t that already happening?).

This week I was stoked to discover this (Mums, brace yourselves) … dirt is good for kids!

PO Box 77 Yes, let kids be kids. Sanitising and sterilising your little one’s environment is one of any parent’s most natural instincts. But Jack Gilbert, who is a scientist and the author of a new book called Dirt is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child’s Developing Immune System, says that exposure to dirt and other things that most parents would lose their minds over if their kids ever were exposed to them, is actually beneficial to our children’s immune systems.

He says that parents tend to go a little overboard when it comes to sterilising. We should feel free to let them play in the mud and enjoy friendly licks from the fam-

ily dog without worrying about germs. And when it comes to a dropped pacifier, while the fivesecond rule isn’t really a thing, parents shouldn’t be hesitant to pop that thing right back into their child’s mouth unless it has fallen somewhere there might be dangerous material on the floor (like a raw chicken thigh).

He also says that allergies can be the result of parents trying to protect their kids too much. This causes our kids’ immune systems to become hyper-sensitised, which can trigger inflammatory reactions like asthma, eczema and food allergies. Jack, you are the man!

I still can’t really imagine hear-

ing our doctor say “your child needs two dog licks to the face and an hour in the garden”.

Right, I better go wipe Maddy down with some raw chicken, she’s sitting in the garden in an awful state. Wait, no rush, Uncle Nathan’s dog has just sorted it.

Girlfriend in the icebox When Arturo Novoa asked if he could store an icebox in his landlord’s basement, Kenny Eshenbaugh was happy to oblige.

It seemed like a reasonable request given Novoa’s explanation that his electricity had been cut off and he didn’t want “his freezer full of meat to spoil”.

But Eshenbaugh’s wife was immediately suspicious about what exactly was inside and why it was sealed with a giant padlock.

By the fifth day the couple could no longer contain their curiosity and forced the freezer open.

What they found is the stuff of nightmares: the dismembered remains of a human body, packed into several plastic bags, news.com.au reported.

Novoa, 31, and his live-in girlfriend Katrina Layton, 34, were arrested in their home in the US state of Ohio less than 24 hours after the grisly discovery.

Authorities suspected the victim to be Novoa’s former girlfriend Shannon Graves, 29, who vanished in February in mysterious circumstances.

Tests revealed the mutilated body was indeed that of Graves, who was reported missing in February but inexplicably omitted from the Ohio attorney-general’s missing persons website until last month.

According to police documents tendered to court, Novoa moved Layton into his apartment shortly after Graves vanished.

Layton then took on Graves’ identity, using her credit cards and mobile phone, driving her car and even taking on her pet.

Layton was slapped with an additional charge of obstruction of justice.

Layton told police that she bought the freezer from Walmart early last month, and then supplied the extension cord to plug it in at Novoa’s building.

Authorities said no murder charges have been filed because a cause of death has not yet been determined.

The pair have yet to appoint a legal team.

The victim’s sister Debbie Graves told WKBN 27 First News that Shannon dated Novoa and lived with him in an apartment in Youngtown, Ohio.

A Facebook page set up to help find her states Graves was “last seen by her family in Christmas 2016” [and] “last seen by her friends in February”. “[She] was at a friend’s house party, arguing with a male friend,” a post dated July 11 said.

“Shannon called an ex boyfriend who didn’t answer the phone.

“Ex says he didn’t receive message until later & then couldn’t get in touch with her.

“No-one has seen Shannon since.”

Accountant of Auchswitz fit for prison

Oskar Groening was a former SS guard.

A 96-year-old former SS guard is fit to go to prison for his role in mass murder, German authorities have ruled.

Oskar Groening – who convicted for his role at the Auschwitz death camp during World War Two – must serve his four year jail term handed down by a court two years ago.

Because of his advanced age, authorities have been reluctant to enforce the jail sentence imposed in 2015 for his role in the murders of 300,000 Jews at the Nazi’s extermination centre.

But now the public prosecutor of Hanover has rejected his legal pleas for a further delay, saying: “We rejected the request of the defence for a reprieve.

“We believe he should serve his jail sentence.”

But his lawyers are to mount an-

other legal appeal, arguing that he is unfit to spend time behind bars, the Daily Mail reports.

Groening was known as the “Accountant of Auschwitz” because he was responsible for sorting through the possessions of the doomed and sending cash and valuables back to his SS masters in Berlin.

He was sentenced to four years in prison in July 2015 by the State Court in Lüneburg for aiding the murder in at least 300,000 cases.

His testimony about the wholesale slaughter of innocents in the concentration camp, where an estimated 1.2 million people were murdered, was considered historically important in refuting the claims of Holocaust deniers who persist in the lie that the murder of six million Jews never happened.

Presidency over Sharknado Donald Trump pulled out of playing the US president in Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No, a sequel to the cult disaster movie Sharknado, in order to make his real life bid for the White House, it has emerged.

Makers of the film said Mr Trump was in “serious talks” for the part in 2015 and was “thrilled” at the prospect. But they were then told it was “not the best time” because he was “thinking about making a legitimate run for the presidency,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The role would have included a scene in which the fictional president shoots killer sharks inside the White House.

Wine fraud charges laid tors were charged in February this year but an interim suppression order imposed by a judge prevented reporting on the case until it was lifted at Christchurch District Court yesterday morning.

A total of 156 charges have been laid.

They include various allegations, including labelling wine as a certain vintage when in fact the grapes came from another year, false statements over where the wines came from, selling blended wines as coming from one vineyard, and trying to destroy or hide winemaking records.

Wines in question have allegedly been exported to the UK, Japan, Fiji, Thailand, and Australia.

It’s understood that there is no health risk involved with any of the wine, which was made for drinking and not cellaring.

None of the wine concerned is currently available for sale in New Zealand.

employment data released was mixed, with the unemployment rate falling to 4.8 per cent, the lowest it has been since the global financial crisis.

The participation rate slipped slightly to 70.0 per cent, which saw employment shrink during the period by 0.2 per cent. This surprised markets and ended a six quarter period of gains.

Wage growth was being watched closely and showed a 0.4 per cent increase for the quarter while for the year they grew 1.7 per cent. This was slightly better than the previous quarter, which showed an annualised gain of 1.6 per cent. The result saw the NZ dollar stumble and will give further cause for the RBNZ to keep rates lower for longer.

The latest Global Dairy Trade auction saw prices fall by 1.6 per cent on average. This was the biggest movement in prices since May. However the key product group for New Zealand, whole milk powder prices gained 1.3 per cent, its third auction of gains in a row. In addition to this, volumes were significantly higher than in the previous auction with more than 32,000 tonnes sold.

Next week, the local reporting season ramps up while the global one continues. Expectations for the local reporting season is for NZ to fare better than Australia, with the exception of the resources and energy sector.

The market week in review

his week saw the end of July and it was positive for most of the world. However, politics took centre stage both here and in the US, as the Labour Party got a new leader and there was more staff turnover for the Trump Administration.

The global reporting season continued to drive markets higher while the local reporting season got under way, albeit slowly. Some solid data points from home have made for an interesting week for markets.

New Zealand again had a strong month and the NZX50 rose 1.08 per cent. This is the seventh month in a row of gains for the local bourse and saw it hit fresh record highs in the first week of August.

Metro Performance Glass was the top performer for the month, gaining 11.59 per cent. Kathmandu was close behind, rising 11.27 per cent for the month while this year’s market darling, a2 Milk rose 10.25 per cent as sentiment for the company remains strong.

ATM has more than doubled in price since the beginning of the year now.

A New Zealand wine company and three directors have been charged over a complex wine fraud involving tens of thousands of bottles, with many exported overseas, where their vintage and origin is under question.

Southern Boundary Wines Ltd, of the North Canterbury wine region of Waipara, along with its vineyard manager and winemaker Scott Charles Berry, winemaker Rebecca Junell Cope, and operations/export manager Andrew Ronald Moore have been accused of being behind the alleged scandal.

The prosecution has been brought by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) in what is understood to be the first case of its kind in New Zealand.

The alleged misconduct, dating back to 2011, 2012, and 2013 Marlborough and Waipara sauvignon blanc and pinot noir vintages, was brought to light by a whistleblower, the Herald has learned.

The MINI that’s not so mini

S

ince BMW took ownership of Mini, they have become bigger and safer. Safer being the main word here, as anyone who has been in an original MINI will know that your clothes will give you more crash protection than the body of those small MINIs. Right now the MINI Cooper Countryman comes in three models. The MINI Cooper Countryman ($45,750), The MINI Cooper S Countryman ($53,890) and The MINI Cooper S All4 Countryman ($56,890).

Later in the year, we might also see the John Cooper Works and the first Plug-In Electric Hybrid in the MINI range the Countryman PHEV which is released in September.

For the international market, the three models available in New Zealand also come in diesel variants. They are not listed on the official MINI New Zealand website, but Mini New Zealand says, “Traditionally, customer demand in MINI product has favoured petrol variants over diesel. Across the market, in general, we are seeing a shift towards petrol, especially in passenger vehicles. However, if a customer particularly wanted a MINI diesel, then we would certainly look at ways to support this.”

The MINI Cooper Countryman comes with a 1.5L MINI Twinpower Turbo 3-cylinder petrol engine. This engine produces 100 kW and 220 Nm of torque. Both the MINI Cooper S and All4 Countryman come

with a 2.0L MINI Twinpower Turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine. This engine produces 141 kW and 280 Nm of torque.

The range of standard options on the Cooper S is not short.

First Impressions – Where is this MINI, is it parked somewhere behind this massive blue car? Oh wait, this is a MINI … and this MINI Countryman is not mini. And I was not the first or last person to gasp at its size, during the week I drove it.

Even though it was huge and a bit strange at first, I grew to like it quickly.

I loved the paint scheme, in Island Blue, with a white topped roof and two white bonnet racing stripes. Being a bit of a movie buff, this was already screaming Italian Job to me. I imagine this MINI could hold a decent stash of gold, but would it be the getaway car that we all know and love?

The inside of any of the new Minis is where you make your final decision.

It’s very much a love or hates thing.

Thankfully for MINI, they hit the nail on the head nine times out of 10, and almost everyone who got in loved the different approach to things compared to the typical interior.

The MINI design team needs congratulating on the engine start/stop button.

This is for several reasons; one and this is a major one, it’s red. This may seem like such a simple thing to do, and it is, but so many cars fail to get this right. If it’s sporty, make it red, as it makes it a bit special.

Neat little sparkler T

he choice available amongst Suzuki’s small car range just keeps on increasing.

It kicks off with the $15,990 Celerio, through to the top of the range of the new Swift models, the RS at $25,990.

Which means there’s pretty much something to suit the wants or needs of most people looking to buy a smaller/small car.

Then of course there’s also the Swift Sport which, currently is still based on the previous model.

A new Sport model, likely to have the 1.4 turbo as used in the Vitara, is to appear soon, and I’m best not to forget the rugged little Jimny 4WDs either.

But for those keen on the high-riding crossover/SUV-like theme, there’s the neat looking Ignis featured today.

This, in Suzuki-speak, is a “super compact light SUV”, and is just 3.7 metres long.

It’s small, distinctive, but rather appealing body, with its sparkling looks, sits on the same latest-generation, lightweight high tensile steel platform as the new Swift and the Baleno, so it has the same 2430mm wheelbase, but a much higher 180mm ground clearance.

It weighs in at just 865 kg.

Prime amongst its abilities is not to go off-road, but be extra easy to get in and out of, then park and drive.

The interesting thing, when driving, is that there’s pretty much no impression given of being in such a small machine.

In fact it was only when we caught up with another Ignis, did we realise just how small they look, and are from the rear.

All of which reminded us just how clever Suzuki have been in coming up with such good passenger space, both front and rear in the cabin.

Which is definitely not on the dull side, with lots of white features around the centre console, air vents and door panels.

As well the fabric covered seats have contrasting stitching. There’s also even more options available to make it more colourful.

The cabin feels to have been put together with care and attention to both to look good, and be easy to use.

There’s an uncluttered look about the dash, which has a touchscreen infotainment system complete with dedicated

sat-nav, a 6-speaker sound system, climate air-con and keyless entry/start.

There’s very good space within for four adults, who from their high, comfortable seats get a very good view of the outside world.

The rear seats slide forward, handy if you want to increase the 264-litre luggage space available.

Then if more is needed, the seats splitfold 50:50 increasing this to1104 litres.

Power is courtesy of an efficient 1.2 litre Dualjet engine, which puts out 66kW at 6000rpm and 120Nm at 4400rpm.

This, in concert with the car’s light weight and quick acting CVT, especially when selecting sport mode, means a suitably nippy performance.

It’ll do 0-100km/h in a little over 12 seconds and then cruises at 2000rpm.

It’s also no slouch for open road overtaking, even with three adults and overnight gear on board.

Then around town it is just so easy to drive and park because of the combination of its small size, great views out, very tight turning circle and when needed, the reversing camera.

The suspension does a great job of soaking up craters around Christchurch streets, and the odd one locally, so some body lean when driven quickly around bends, which most owners may be likely to do, was not unexpected.

Lighting matters Creating the perfect mood for any occasion can often depend on the lighting on offer in any room at any time.

There are no set rules, as people have different ideas and preferences on lighting and the mood it sets for them.

NXS legacy rolls on

H

onda, in conjunction with JAS Motorsport, Honda Performance Development (HPD) and Mugen will offer the NSX GT3 for sale around the world for the 2018 season.

Already a multiple-race winner in its inaugural season of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition in North America, the Honda NSX GT3 is eligible to race in more than two dozen FIAsanctioned race events around the world, including the Blancpain GT Series, Nurburgring 24 Hour race in Europe; The Pirelli World Challenge and IMSA SportsCar series in North America; The Blancpain GT Asia Series and GT Asia championship, Super GT’s GT300 class in Japan and the Australian GT Championship.

The NSX GT3 has been designed by Honda R&D in Japan in collaboration with JAS Motorsport in Milan, Italy. The car’s development has been undertaken as a collaborative project over the past three years that has also included HPD since the end of 2015 with over 85,000km of race and test mileage completed.

The production-based 3.5-litre, twin-turbocharged V6 racing engines are built alongside their production vehicle counterparts at the Anna Engine Plant in Ohio, USA. The racing engine uses the same design specifications as the production NSX, including the block, heads, valve train, crankshaft, pistons and dry-sump lubrication system. A six-speed, sequential-shift racing gearbox delivers power to the NSX GT3’s rear wheels, while a state-of-the-art chassis and aerodynamic package finishes off the NSX’s impressive performance credentials.

The NSX GT3 adds to the incredible legacy of the first-generation NSX in motorsport, including victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours’ GT2 category in 1995 and three crowns in Super GT between 2000 and 2009.

All-Stars dominate

Brilliant pacer, Lazarus was crowned New Zealand’s Harness Horse of the Year at the annual harness racing awards in Christchurch last night.

The New Zealand Trotting Cup king from last November was a resounding winner of the major award of the night on an evening where he and his stablemates produced a domination of the categories.

All totalled, nine awards went the way of horses from the barn of Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen including three to Lazarus who not only claimed Horse of the Year, but was also crowned Pacer of the Year and Four-Year-Old Entire or Gelding of the Year.

With nine wins from 10 starts during the season and more than $750,000 picked up from his New Zealand racing alone, there was never any real doubt on whether he would win the major gong or not.

The All Stars stable also picked up category wins with Elle Mac, Spanish Armada, Spankem, Ultimate Machete, Dream About Me, Smolda and the three wins for Lazarus.

Purdon and Rasmussen, who are in America as Purdon prepares to represent New Zealand in the World Drivers’ Championship, also claimed the trainers’ prize for their dominant performance on the national premiership.

Woodend Beach trainers, Greg and Nina Hope also had a good night out, picking up a combined four titles.

Aoraki claimed the young trotting Filly of the Year title, while Enghien and Monbet also won their respective categories.

In brief Bosson close to return Crack jockey Opie Bosson is aiming to return to race riding at Te Rapa on Foxbridge Plate day on August 19, if not the day before at Taupo.

He rode several horses for Te Akau Racing Stables – for whom he is the retained rider – at Tuesday’s Te Teko trials and said he was pleased with how his fitness was progressing. “I haven’t ridden for a couple of months so it was good to get back out there and I was actually surprised how well I coped. I must be fitter than I thought.” - NZME

Golden target for filly

Lazarus and Mark Purdon made a habit of leading the field home in 2017.

In what was a close battle, Monbet also edged his young stablemate out for the title of Trotter of the Year – a notable feat considering he only raced three times this season where he won the New Zealand Trotting FreeFor-All and the coveted Dominion Handicap.

Another close category saw Sunny Ruby claimed aged trotting mare of the year over Habibti Ivy and Quite A Moment.

Bethany, the dam of Lazarus, picked up the Broodmare of the Year title while the late Carl Middleton’s Another Starlet was awarded the Trotting Broodmare of the Year title.

Bettor’s Delight and Love You won their respective stallion categories.

Phil and Glenys Kennard were named Owners of the Year for their incredible 12 months of success and Dexter Dunn claimed another driving title.

Rory McIlwrick was named Junior Driver of the Year for his Premiership-winning effort and Brian West picked up the Breeder of the Year gong.

Popular Oamaru couple Phil and Bev Williamson won the Outstanding Contribution Award for their efforts as licence holders, administrators and largely as the parents of successful horsemen, Nathan, Matthew and Brad.

Fannin wants jumping crown back Shaun Fannin is aiming to regain his place at the head of New Zealand’s jumping riders’ ranks, beginning with a weekend of feature wins to kick-start his season.

Fannin rides reigning champs The Big Opal and Ngario in the NZI Koral Steeples (4250m) and Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge Sydenham Hurdles (3100m) respectively at Riccarton tomorrow before jetting off to Melbourne to partner Yardarm in the Crisp Steeplechase (3900m) at Sandown on Sunday.

The 21-year-old hoop landed his first jumps riders’ premiership in the 2015-16 season with 27 wins, but had to settle for third last season with his 11 wins falling short of Aaron Kuru’s 20 and Will Gordon’s 13.

However, Fannin remains favourite to claim the champion jumps jockey title at next month’s New Zealand Thoroughbred Rac-

“You always want to be at the top,” Fannin said.

“We had a flukish season the year before last when Kevin [Myers] had so much depth in his jumps team and they were all winning.

“We didn’t quite have the same depth last season but hopefully that quality will be back this season. It’s looking good at this stage anyway.”

“He won the Waikato Steeples really well, but then he had a mishap in the Manawatu Steeples when he fell,” Fannin said.

“He’s had a flat run and a hurdle run last week and that should top him off nicely for Saturday.

“He won this race last year and he’s a nice, dashing chaser. He makes up a lot of ground at his

fences and he’s got that flat speed to increase the tempo and push the issue when we need him to.”

Saturday week’s Grand National Steeplechase looks the main mission for the Kevin Myerstrained Storm Creek nine-yearold gelding who parted company with Gillies in that race last year.

A Sydenham-Grand National Hurdles repeat is foremost in Fannin’s mind with the Myerstrained Ngario, who produced a terrific trial for the Riccarton features when second at Rotorua last Saturday.

“That was his first hurdle run in nearly a year and I’d say he’d be spot on for Saturday,” Fannin said. “He won the Sydenham and Grand National double last year and he’s down there to do the same this year.

“He gave me a great feel the other day. Just with 70 kilos, he blew out the last bit.”

Glenn Delaney is under no disillusion that today’s Ranfurly Shield game is as simple as just turning up.

The man behind the Canterbury side who will roll into Ashburton this afternoon with the Log O’ Wood under their arm and the expectation of taking it home again, has been charged with the task of bringing an understanding to his men that when it comes to shield rugby, anything can happen.

They made short work of Wanganui a few weeks ago.

But expect Mid Canterbury to provide a whole new challenge.

There’s regional pride on the line and a slight sense of big brother getting ready to pick on little brother. That’s a mantle the green and golds won’t want to hear a word of.

“You treat every Ranfurly Shield challenge with the upmost respect,” Delaney said.

“Teams lift to places they

may not necessarily have been before when the shield is sitting on the sideline and it’s a case of being as best prepared as you can for the battle ahead.”

Canterbury have named a strong side for the challenge with a real mixture of youthful exuberance and flair alongside the experienced shoulders of guys like Super Rugby players Jed Brown and Tom Sanders.

Delaney said it hasn’t been a hard sell to his new faces to underline just how important a shield challenge is for a player.

“Everyone has a Ranfurly Shield memory, mine’s watching Wayne Smith score a try in the final minute to win it against Wellington in 1982 – you just remember those moments.

“And for the young guys in our team and a lot of the guys in the Mid Canterbury team this is a huge experience for them.

“But it’s also a stepping

stone because it gives everyone a chance to see how individuals handle the moment.”

Preparation for a match against a minnow side like Canterbury face today can often be tricky, but Delaney and his team have done as much homework as they can to be ready for the expected onslaught.

They’ve watched them play and are also in a fortunate enough position to know a number of the players in the Mid Canterbury side through their exploits in the Christchurch Metro competition.

“We’ve seen a lot of what some of these guys are capable of up here and know quite a few of the others as well.

“We treat no game any different to another.

“It’s about being as ready as you can be and understanding what the opposition might be looking to do.

“Mid Canterbury have a very good side with some really good players, we’re expecting a good challenge from them.”

The Lions plan to “get in the face” of the Crusaders in the Super Rugby final, hoping to mirror their successful methods against the Hurricanes. The Lions have their sights set on becoming the comppetition’s second South African champions when they host the decider on Sunday morning. Lions coach Johan Ackermann is adamant his team mustn’t depart from the expansive methods that have taken them to successive finals. - NZME

here is nothing more peculiar than a rugby field right after the final whistle has blown in a final with some silverware on the line.

Normally, 46 of some of the hardest blokes around have knocked the stuffing out of each other for 80 minutes.

That is the entertaining part, the interesting part is that difference between winning and losing.

Half of them are ecstatic, yelling and yahooing, delighted that all their hard work and dedication has come to fruition.

Everyone talks about the magic of the FA Cup in England, where non-league professional sides are able to slug it out with the big boys of the premier for a one-in-

Hopefully, we might see the miracle of the shield, where a heartland team is finally able to knock over one of the big boys after so much time has gone by.

All Black World Cup winner Brad Thorn has been named as coach of Queensland Country in Australia’s National Rugby Championship. The 59-test All Black and former Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Origin great, was assistant coach with Country last season and coached the Queensland under-20 team to an unbeaten season this year. Lawson to lead Ashburton indoor bowler Michael Lawson will be at the helm of the South Island indoor bowls side when they begin their week-long tour of the lower North Island in Wellington tonight.

Lawson, who is making a record nineteenth appearance for the South Island side, will captain the 20-strong side made up of both men and women from around the South Island, with a view to leading them to victory in their annual test match against the North Island team in Rotorua in eight days.

Lawson’s experience on the mats is vast.

Rasmussen out Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic have let Silver Fern Grace Rasmussen go, as they try and secure other key players for next year’s national premiership.

New coach for Northern National under-21 coach Kiri Wills will guide the Northern Stars in next year’s netball premiership. Wills’s under-21 New Zealand team have recently returned from the World Youth Cup in Botswana where they won gold, and back-to-back world titles, in beating Australia 60-57.

She takes over from Australian Julie Hoornweg, who coached the new Northern Stars franchise during their debut season. Stars board chairman Bill Francis said it was an exciting step forward for the club, which was looking to build on the foundations from their inaugural campaign.

Hammers eye history

The Mid Canterbury Hammers have named their team that they hope will be able to make history and bring the Ranfurly Shield to Mid Canterbury this afternoon.

After coming away with three injury scares from the friendly against Southland last Saturday, only one player is not fit to play. Lock Iromi Dawai will sit the match out with a knee injury, and is expected to return in around three weeks.

The experienced Phil Watson has recovered from a hamstring niggle to return to his home at blindside flanker, while Seta Koroitamana has recovered from his shoulder knock to start on

the openside. This left space open for new signing Sam Finau to slot in at number eight.

“He settled in straight away with the team and is a pretty exciting prospect.

“He has been doing good things in training and has added to the team,” said co-coach Craig Dunlea.

Dunlea said he expects the combination of Finau and Koroitamana to be strong one, with Finau a strong carrier of the ball, with Koroitamana playing off the shoulder well.

The experienced Will Mackenzie will start at halfback, with new-to-the-region Jason Kjestrup starting at first-five.

will be one-test All Black Regan King.

“Regan has been huge for the team with mentoring some of the younger boys, it has been brilliant,” said Dunlea.

“I’ve heard some of the boys at training saying they’ve googled him and were saying ‘you were pretty good’.”

One name who missed out on inclusion in the matchday squad was the young Tom Hanham-Carter.

“It is a big occasion and I am sure he would love to be there but it is just one of those things,” said Dunlea.

The team had one last light hit-out on Thursday evening ahead of the match, before going out to a meal.

Dunlea said his main message for the team on match-day will be to enjoy the game, and to have the belief that they can do well.

“When you go out and do something and enjoy it you play better,” said Dunlea.

“I will be telling them to not get overawed by the occasion and just to go out and enjoy it.”

Canterbury have named four debutants alongside three Super Rugby players, and Dunlea is expecting a tough battle.

“As long as we keep our shape and just give it everything we’ve got we are going to have a chance,” he said.

“Last week showed us it is going to be a massive step up and we have to be ready.”

We know about his cricketing achievements, we’ve seen a glimpse of his darts skills ... but there seems no limit to Kane Williamson’s sporting prowess. Currently preparing for the Caribbean Premier League T20 with the Barbados Tridents, the Black Caps skipper was a special guest at the Miami Marlins v Washington Nationals Major League Baseball game, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. Naturally, the part-time right-arm spin bowler ripped it across home plate for a strike.

Loeb back at Citroen?

Citroen hasn’t ruled out the idea of nine-time world champion Sebastien Loeb returning to the WRC team in 2018. Loeb, who retired from WRC in 2012, will test the C3 on asphalt before the next round in Germany prompting speculation a comeback could be on the cards. Citroen has endured a tough season in the World Rally Championship this year but the French manufacturer is adamant Loeb will not feature this year, but was coy on involvement in 2018.
