Boxing Day races in dire straits BY MATT MARKHAM

Ashburton’s iconic Boxing Day races are one step closer to receiving the chop from the racing calendar. The New Zealand Racing Board (NZRB) last week released their second round of draft dates for the next racing season which begins on August 1 and again Ashburton’s name was missing from Boxing Day. And that comes despite heavy fightback from both the Ashburton Trotting Club and Harness Racing New Zealand. Instead, the NZRB has allocated the club a new date on January 1, 2018, a decision the man in charge of harness racing in New Zealand, Edward Rennell, said wouldn’t work. “In our opinion we don’t see January 1 as a viable option for Ashburton,” he said yesterday. “It doesn’t work in with the flow of harness racing in the Canterbury region

at that time of the year and it also will create an issue with the heavy racing schedule in Central Otago at the same time.” The issue has arisen around the need for the NZRB to remove one of their control trucks which service race meetings. This leaves them one short in the South Island and Boxing Day is one of the only days of the year where they currently use their full fleet. Despite its large prominence in the region for many years, Boxing Day at Ashburton has suffered a major lull in attendance and betting figures in recent years, statistics which have undoubtedly aided NZRB’s decision to axe the meeting from the date. The second round of draft dates gives clubs and the code’s governing bodies a final chance to put forward their case against any potential changes to the racing calendar and Rennell said Har-
ness Racing New Zealand would continue to oppose the change alongside the Ashburton Trotting Club. “We are working through our options now around getting the date back to Boxing Day, but we are also having to look at other potential dates as well.” Other potential dates could be December 27 or even a meeting on Christmas Eve which this year falls on a Sunday. Ashburton Trotting Club president, Craig Harrison said it wasn’t ideal to learn that their first submissions had fallen on deaf ears, but could also in some way understand where the NZRB were coming from with their decision. “We are obviously disappointed,” he said.
