Jackman to star in biblical film Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are teaming up behind the camera again to produce a new biblical film, starring Hugh Jackman. The Les Miserables star will play Christian missionary Paul, aka Saul of Tarsus, in Apostle Paul. Jackman will also produce the project with the Good Will Hunting Oscar winners, according to Deadline.com. The material won’t be too foreign for Jackman – he was raised by a born-again Christian father, but his dad’s religion never rubbed off on the actor. He told Parade magazine, “He takes his religion very seriously and would prefer I go to church.”

Pattinson not engaged The media always falls for at least one celebrity April Fools’ Day prank – and this year it was American rapper T-Pain who stumped the press. The media was sent into a frenzy after T-Pain told reporter Dee Lockett from Vulture.com that his friend Robert Pattinson and Fka Twigs had got engaged. The rapper was talking to Lockett about Twigs when he mentioned “the engagement”.

“We met in the studio. Her music’s changed a lot since then. But she’s on tour so much, and anytime I call her, she’s in a different place.

And she’s engaged now, so that’s about to be a whole other thing... to ol’ Patty (Pattinson). I don’t know if she wanted anybody to know that...” But hours after the engagement gossip became big news, T-Pain revealed it was just a joke. “Added a little #AprilFools to my interview with Vulture Magazine today. Check it out,” he wrote on his Instagram page.

He also posted a photo of two engagement rings. Twigs and Pattinson, who have strived to keep their relationship lowkey, only went public with their romance last year after the actor split from his Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart in 2013.

‘Spicy’ enticement The whiff of a Whopper made hundreds of customers hungry for a Burger King special this week — “Flame Grilled” cologne. Bottles of the fragrance were sold at the fast-food chain’s stores in Japan for 5000 yen (about $NZ56), including one Whopper burger. At a downtown Tokyo outlet, 17-year-old student Yuki Ishibashi bought one out of curiosity. He learned late last month about the cologne and wanted to try it. He took a whiff of the spray and described the scent as “spicy”. Nanako Katabami bought one for her friend who said it smelled like a Burger King store. Burger King said the cologne sold out at about half of its 90 Japanese outlets by evening.

Lucky couple A couple from northern England has defied the odds — again — by winning a million pounds (nearly $NZ2 million) in the lottery for a second time. David and Kathleen Long won the money — and a car — in the EuroMillions Mega Friday Draw, having already scooped up 1 million pounds in 2013. Lottery operator Camelot said the couple beat odds of 283-billionto-1. David Long says he played his usual numbers and watched in amazement as they came up. His wife, Kathleen, had to verify them. Since then, it’s all been a blur. The retired truck driver says the win means he’ll probably take his wife on a cruise — as he’s run out of excuses not to go now.

This girl’s no fool Tianna Marsh was getting stares and toots from other people on Auckland’s motorway this week for all the right reasons. Ms Marsh was driving her new BMW home from Newmarket to Riverhead, after reading an ad she thought was an April Fool’s Day prank and taking a chance. The ad said the first person to arrive at the Newmarket BMW dealership with the ad in hand and ask for Tom would trade in their current vehicle for a brand new BMW. She arrived in her 15-year old Nissan Avenir shortly after 5am.

The ad had fooled both her and friend Amy, but the fear of being made a fool of wasn’t enough to deter them. Ms Marsh said she still didn’t have many words to describe the feeling when she realised it was no joke and the brand new BMW 1 Series, worth about $50,000, was hers to keep. Ms Marsh said motorists were tooting and waving at her in her new car with the personalised plate NOF00L as she drove home to Riverhead.

Suppliers’ faith undiminished

Mid Canterbury’s Fonterra suppliers still have faith in their co-operative, despite tumbling milk prices, a dairy industry spokesperson says.

Nationwide, farmers have expressed disappointment with the country’s largest dairy producer’s half yearly results, which included a 16 per cent drop in profit and paring back the forecast dividend payout by five cents to range between 20 and 30 cents per share.

On top of this dairy prices slumped again in Wednesday night’s GlobalDairyTrade auction, led by a drop in butter milk powder and whole milk powder price.

The average winning price

dropped 10.8 per cent to US$2746, down from US$3136 at the previous auction two weeks ago.

Some 23,162 tonnes of product was sold, up from 20,258 tonnes two weeks ago.

Federated Farmers’ Mid Canterbury dairy spokesperson Jessie Chan-Dorman said price drop coincided with an increase in supply, driven by the entry of the European Milk Quotas.

“The EU quotas came off, which had capped production from EU producers. Now they can produce as much as they want, increasing the amount of milk in the global market place,” she said.

“The question will be whether it is profitable enough, and where that product will end up

and what form it will end up in – we are not necessarily in the same market because they produce a lot of cheese.”

Despite reports of some 10,600 of the co-operative’s farmer shareholders considering a swap to one of its competitors, Ms Chan-Dorman still has confidence in Fonterra.

“The bigger issue is around Fonterra’s performance – and there are a lot of questions around that,” she said.

“It’s always healthy to have competition. It will be up to Fonterra to make sure it demonstrates a value proposition for its shareholders.

“I still have confidence in the co-operative – I believe in what Fonterra is trying to achieve, and I think many farmers do,

but I am nervous about the increased complexity and distance from the suppliers. I hear that from other farmers as well.”

The introduction of the Trading among Farmers (TAF) scheme (where farmer shareholders can buy and sell shares among themselves, rather than with Fonterra), and a change in the way Fonterra expresses capacity adjustment, and the principles underlying that have been thought through, but in the minds of shareholders the complexity has increased, Ms Chan-Dorman said.

“Our biggest co-operative is still vital to the industry, because it allows us to be price makers instead of price takers.

“The reason Fonterra was formed in the first place was to

return as much as possible to the farmers – it’s really important the co-operative remains strong. That’s why farmers still support it, but we’ve got to get some other things right in terms of demonstrating the value proposition for shareholders.”

“We’ve all heard the word volatility a million times but it’s never been more evident that in the last two years with the $8.40 versus $4.70 (kg/MS payouts) the peaks are higher and the troughs are lower.

“We need to get used to that – instead of being a four to five year cycle we are seeing 18 month cycles.

“It will be very hard for sharemilkers with low security to manage.”

Air-con recordings ‘positive’

It’s taken months of trial and error, but finally the air conditioning woes that have kept the closed signs up at Ashburton’s art gallery could be over.

While the art and heritage centre’s museum opened for business last month, a faulty air conditioning unit meant temperature and humidity could not be stabilised in the art gallery.

Because of this art work could not be hung and the gallery spaces have remained

closed. On March 16, the faulty unit was removed and its replacement was commissioned on March 23.

After one week of testing, Ashburton District Council commercial manager James Webb said the results were all positive.

While there were some expected fluctuations during the first few days, the air conditioning system was performing well. The formal commissioning period, however, would continue for at least another full week, he said.

“With these early indications I am hopeful we should have enough data to confirm a stable air environment for the art gallery very soon.”

With two weeks of solid data logged, the air conditioning system would continue to be monitored by staff on-site and also by consultant engineers off-site in Christchurch, Mr Webb said.

A building management system in the complex allowed engineers to adjust and control the building’s air conditioning performance remotely.

When one of the original units failed a replacement had to be ordered from Italy, creating further delays in opening the gallery spaces.

An opening date for the gallery has still to be determined, but this won’t be set until art gallery staff and the gallery’s board are satisfied temperature and humidity have stabilised.

Since the heritage centre was officially opened on February 14, visitor numbers have been significantly up on those logged in the old museum in Baring Square.

The Canterbury District Health Board is joining other New Zealand district health boards this month as part of a campaign to reduce falls and the harm they cause. Health Quality and Safety Commissions clinical leader Sandy Blake, said 90 per cent of falls occur in the community, with many people requiring hospital treatment. Ms Blake said older people had a higher risk but this could be reduced. As part of April Falls, the CDHB has challenged hospital staff to produce the most eye-catching displays and to involve visitors and patients in conversations about staying safe.

Farm accident

Sparkling performance Ashburton College students took to the stage on Wednesday for the annual Festival of the Spoken Word. Ali Diamond was one of a group of about 50 students who performed sketches, poetry recitals, and monologues. The first cultural event of the 2015 inter-house competition followed, with student executives from the four houses going head-to-head as they recited pieces up to three-and-a-half minutes long. Proceeds from the evening will go towards supporting the Ashburton College Reading Mentors programme.

A toddler remains in a serious condition in hospital following a near drowning incident on a Waikato dairy farm. ‘Take care on the roads’ Police are urging motorists to take care this Easter.

High risk driving is the major focus for police over the holiday period as they look to clamp down on dangerous behaviour on the roads.

The official Easter holiday period began at 4pm on Thursday and ends at 6am on Tuesday.

Five people died on New Zealand roads during the Easter period last year, including 80-year-old Ashburton man Alan Hammond who was fatally hit while walking on State Highway 1 near Hinds on Good Friday.

Road Policing national operations manager Inspector Peter McKennie said police will be firmly focused on preventing risk-taking behaviour, which was responsible for killing and injuring “far too many people” on New Zealand roads.

That would include targeting drink

and drug-impaired drivers, speeding, and those who failed to wear safety belts.

“In addition to breath testing and other high visibility policing tactics, we will be enforcing a reduced 4km/h speed threshold as we have done for every other long holiday weekend since Queen’s Birthday weekend in 2010,” he said.

“This means anyone caught exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 4km/h by a speed camera or a police officer can expect to be ticketed.”

Mr McKennie said staying safe on the road was “not rocket science”.

“Our officers do not want to see anyone killed or injured or their friends and family torn apart this Easter by a crash that could easily have been avoided,” he said.

“But we need everyone to step up and play their part, as road safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

Targets late; results robust

Environment Canterbury’s water management targets for Mid Canterbury may be behind schedule, but with good reason, Ashburton mayor Angus McKay says.

Under the 2009 Canterbury Water Management Strategy, the Ashburton Water Management Zone committee was one of 10 zone committees established across Canterbury.

Each was handed a set of 10 target areas to improve water quality, with timelines set in 2015, 2020 and 2040.

This year’s targets included ensuring the water in 80 per cent of popular swimming sites was fit for recreational

use and significant wetlands improvement projects were prioritised.

The zone committees were also tasked with setting water quality limits based on nutrient levels.

Mr McKay, a former ECan councillor, said there had been delays in implementing target nutrient requirements – particularly in the Hinds plains area, but the surrounding discussions had produced a more robust result.

The Hinds Drains Working Party (HDWP) was established to assist the committee to develop recommendations on minimum flows and surface water allocation for the water bodies in the lower Hinds

plains by December this year.

Early this year, the HDWP asked the committee to request ECan commissioners consider its recommendations, and reflect them as a variation to the Canterbury Land and Water Plan.

The HDWP proposed topping up the drains using ground water, and using them as conduits for irrigation further down steam.

Cooperative water takes between groups of farmers, an agreement not to increase the water take from the drains and enhancement of habitat were also part of the HDWP proposal.

American hydrologist Bob Bower has now been appoint-

ed to head up a pilot scheme investigating whether managed aquifer recharge (MAR) can restore the health of the drains.

“There was a delay with the lowland stream discussion, but they will get a better result than if they had just banged in a (nutrient) target – because the target has now been worked out by the locals.

That is one reason they have not meet their target yet,” Mr McKay said.

“If people agree to a solution, it’s more likely to happen.

“I question whether they actually missed it, because they have come up something more durable.”

Bikes ready to roar The air in Methven today will be rich with the smell of petrol and the sound of high powered engines as more than 150 bikers test their skills on the streets to win category titles in this year’s Mountain Thunder.

The signature motorcycle race has attracted riders from around New Zealand including Josh Coppins who comes with 17 New Zealand championship titles on his CV. Traditionally the event attracts large crowds, and event spokesperson Sue van den Heuvel expects the high profile rider will boost numbers significantly.

Harsher penalties New, harsher penalties for making, trading or possessing child pornography have been passed into law with unanimous support.

The Objectionable Publications and Indecency Legislation Bill passed its final stages in Parliament on Thursday with backing from all parties. The law change sent a clear message that activities which sexually exploited children were abhorrent and would not be tolerated, Justice Minister Amy Adams said.

Two weeks of scarecrow hunting mayhem is about to descend upon Methven.

The annual scarecrow trail kicks off this weekend, and more than 30 residents and business owners have constructed scarecrows outside their places.

They include Lizzie Barwell (above) at Skibo House, whose snowy-haired creation with a blue dress should not be too difficult to guess.

The aim of the trail is for groups to buy an $8 map from the Methven i-SITE and fill it in with their guesses on the characters that the scarecrows

represent. This year’s theme is animated characters from film and television.

Mrs Barwell said she was looking forward to the trail, which runs for the two weeks of the school holidays.

“There always seems to be someone at the gate, cars stopping,” she said.

Last year about 1000 people participated, and they came from throughout Canterbury.

The trail opens today when the Methven Mountain Thunder is under way, so maps will be available at the gates for that day.

The trail runs until April 18.

Two planes, including a vintage German fighter plane at an air show, have crashed yesterday afternoon. In the first incident, a pilot escaped unharmed from the accident at the Omaka Classic Fighters Airshow at Blenheim.

Photographs from the scene show dust billowing as the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 appeared to crash-land before the pilot climbed out of the cockpit, unscathed. Further south, two people had minor injuries after a plane crashed on Otago’s Tomahawk Beach yesterday afternoon. Police said the cause of that crash was not yet known but nobody other than the plane’s two occupants was hurt.

Speeding driver A driver with two children in the car passed a line of seven vehicles at 150km/h because they were driving too slow, police said. The woman was stopped about 7pm last night between Dunedin and Milton after a police officer saw the vehicle passing at high speed on State Highway 1. Police said when stopped, the 28-year-old Queenstown woman admitted speeding, saying she was sick of waiting in line as the other cars were driving too slow. She was driving with her husband and two young children to a relative’s address in Waitati.

Easter treats flying out the door

Most people count their Easter eggs in single numbers; Nadine Porter counts hers in the thousands.

By the time Easter is over, Mrs Porter and her team at Ashburton’s home grown chocolatier, Bull Rush Chocolates will have made, packed and distributed more than 10,000 chocolatey Easter treats.

In an effort to ease the Easter rush, she’s tried to spread the workload by having eggs available for a longer period preEaster.

“This year it’s been more sustained. As soon as we get back from Christmas, in January, we start to actually concentrate on our Easter stock,” she said.

Eggs, baskets, bunnies, personalised eggs and a new creation, the caramel-marshmallow chocolate bar, they’ve been flying out the door, and while the big Easter rush is fun, come Tuesday, Mrs Porter said she’ll be looking forward to getting back to business in the traditional chocolate world.

Motorist rams parked cars

By Stephanie arthur-WorSop Witnesses saw a motorist ram into several parked cars on a Rotorua city street before “boosting down the street on a punctured tire with his front bumper hanging off ”.

A number of witnesses saw the man leaving a nearby cafe prior to the incident Thursday afternoon.

He then got into his car, parked on Whakaue Street, and reversed “about five times, each time crashing into the parked cars around him”, witness John Pauling said.

“I saw him floor it, crashing so violently into one of the parked cars it

went up on the kerb. “This mum’s kids had just crossed the road when he came hooning past so she was screaming in terror clutching her kids.

“I ran over and tried to open his front door but he had locked himself in. In a matter of seconds he was boosting down the street on a punctured tire with his front bumper hanging off.”

Anne Scott said she was sitting on her balcony when she heard an “almighty crash”.

“I rushed over just as the man took off down the street at what looked like 80km. I heard all these people screaming and that’s when I saw all the damaged cars.”

Wasps costing $130m a year Pest wasps are costing New Zealand’s economy $130 million a year, a new study says.

The impact of the introduced pests included wasp-related traffic incidents, costing $1.4 million a year, and more than $1 million in health costs from wasp stings.

But the greatest impact was on farming, beekeeping, horticulture and forestry, the study said.

Wasps disrupted bee pollination, reducing the amount of clover in pastures, and increasing the need for fertiliser, costing the farming industry $60 million a year.

The cost to beekeepers of stopping wasps from attacking honey bees was $9 million a year.

The research was funded by the De-

partment of Conservation and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

DOC scientist Eric Edwards said as well as the financial cost, wasps also affected tourism and people’s experience of the outdoors.

“It’s hard to put a dollar value on people’s attitudes to wasps and to what extent wasps prevent them from visiting conservation land or taking part in outdoor tourism activities,” he said.

“But we know that wasps are a massive annoyance and their multiple stings can cause a lifetime effect of making young people reluctant to return to forests and parks.”

MPI’s Erik van Eyndhoven said the study showed it made economic and environmental sense to invest in wasp control.

Father, son Gallipoli bound I

n less than three weeks Malcolm Lovett and his son Mitchell will be setting off for Gallipoli to commemorate the centenary of the Anzac landings.

Malcolm, Mitchell and his aunt and cousin all entered the Gallipoli ballot in the hopes of being one of the 2000 Kiwis to travel to Turkey for Anzac Day. Malcolm was one of the lucky ones and, after finding out he was successful, rang his son to share the good news.

“Dad has taken me to the dawn service for as long as I can remember and learning that my great granddad was one of the many that went over, made it all the more interesting,” Mitchell said.

The family ritual on Anzac Day was attending the dawn service followed by pancakes at his parents’ house, Malcolm said.

Malcolm’s connection to World War One and Anzac is through his granddad, Arthur Ernest Lovett.

Arthur was born in Winslow in 1892 and took up farming before heading off to fight in the war at the tender age of 22.

Guardian reporter Caitlin Porter chatted with Malcolm Lovett and his son Mitchell, who are setting off on their trip of a lifetime to Turkey on April 20. military training under the Defence Act of 1909 in Hinds.

Malcolm researched his granddad’s time at war as best he could, but he said it wasn’t easy.

It appears Arthur left Wellington with the New Zealand Field Engineers on the HMNZT3 on October 16, 1914, and first went to Suez, before moving on Egypt with the New Zealand Expeditionary Service.

Malcolm struck gold when he found he was able to access his grandfather’s personnel file via Archives New Zealand, which holds a variety of documents including medical records, sick leave certificates, casualty forms and his discharge certificate.

His casualty form showed when he was admitted to hospitals, when and where he was injured and when he was discharged to light duties, although admittedly some of the battered documents were nearly unintelligible.

Malcolm discovered that while at war Arthur was a sapper, or someone who performed a variety of military engineering duties such as bridge building, laying or clearing minefields, trench digging and general construction.

He was also noted as a driver, but Malcolm believes that term relates to driving horses, rather than any war vehicles.

Arthur spent a total of four years and 187 days abroad.

He was discharged after returning to New Zealand on May 23, 1919.

A bachelor while at war, Arthur married upon his return and went back to farming.

Malcolm doesn’t remember much about his granddad as he died at the age of 84, on May 4, 1976, when Malcolm was only a young boy.

Both Malcolm and Mitchell said the historic family connection makes them all the more excited for their impending trip.

“This is going to be the biggest trip I will go on for quite some time,” Mitchell said. He is studying towards a Bachelor of Science majoring in Astronomy at the University of Canterbury, but said the trip wouldn’t impact on his education too much.

As part of preparation for the journey, Mitchell has been making sure he gets plenty of exercise as he has been told the walk to get to the New Zealand cemetery at Chunuk Bair involves a steep hill.

Malcolm too, is excited and is doing some preparation of his own, including watching various movies and documentaries about Gallipoli with wife Cindy.

Perth is the farthest Malcolm has ever travelled, but for this trip the pair will depart New Zealand for Dubai, where they will spend a day, before continuing on to Istanbul where their group tour starts.

Everyone from the tour will

head to Gallipoli on the first day. Security will be tight as there are no private cars or taxis allowed on the Gallipoli peninsula and some 3700 Turkish military personnel and police will be on hand, ensuring everything goes off without a hitch.

Malcolm said the night on the beach will definitely be one to remember.

“They say it’s a moving place to go at any time of the year,” he said, “let alone on Anzac Day.” After the Anzac celebrations Malcolm and Mitchell are heading over to Italy for “a bit of a boys’ tour”.

They will spend 18 days tiki-touring around, looking at a variety of car-themed attractions.

One that Mitchell is bracing himself for is the 15-hour plane trip.

“That will test my limits of boredom,” he said.

Muslim woman quit her job because company meetings and functions always had alcohol, and the employer of a Muslim chef who worked at a bar kitchen could not understand why he could not touch pork.

Challenges faced by Muslim workers in New Zealand and the reluctance of employers to hire them are among the issues that were up for discussion at a Muslim at Work summit this week.

“The summit aims to dispel myths, shed light on the Islamic culture and create understanding of the diversity within our Muslim workforce,” said AUT professor of diversity Edwina Pio. Many Muslims were getting a better deal in employment here than in their countries of origin, she said, but some employers were still nervous about hiring them.

“Many employers, with every good intention, are skittish about employing Muslims, based on media pictures and coverage about Muslims globally, which is often linked with violence, gender inequality and extremist jihad.

“By sharing information and research, we want to encourage delegates to promote understanding and positive change.”

The summit, at AUT University, was convened by Professor Pio, and speakers included Equal Employment Commissioner Jackie Blue, Imam Sheikh Rafat and New Zealand’s first ethnic police inspector Rakesh Naidoo.

Topics included the Islamic concept of work, what success means to Muslims and Muslim women in the workplace.

Research done by Professor Pio found there was still tension about employing Muslims and that acceptance of Muslims and their way of life needs improvement.

“Women with veils and/or burqas are viewed with general curiosity and avoidance ... it is also difficult for men with beards ... employers seem okay with employing Hindus and Buddhists, but they have question marks if the individual is Muslim,” Professor Pio said.

There are now more than 46,000 Muslims in New Zealand, originating from more than 50 countries.

“Muslims in New Zealand have a lot in common but they are also a diverse group ... crossing the spectrum of socio-economic

Ms Alshemari said most of her employers also could not understand her cultural practice of asking for permission before she did things.

“It’s made to look passive, but really it’s not, it’s because of culture that you ask permission,” she said. “They would assume straight away it’s because of my religion ... there’s a misunderstanding between culture and religion.”

Easter, holy or holiday?

s New Zealand becomes an increasingly secularised society, long weekends such as Easter take on a different meaning.

For centuries Easter, like Christmas, has been a Christian celebration. The focus of the four days and the Lenten weeks preceding were on death and resurrection. At Easter, the sorrow and the celebration are at the core of what it means to be a Christian.

For the majority of New Zealanders, while the real meaning of Easter may still be well understood, it’s observed by dwindling numbers. Easter church services might have greater numbers than others on the church calendar, but the numbers who make attending church part of their Easter are dwindling, rapidly.

For most of us, Easter is the last break before winter. It’s about heading off for a few days of recreation before the long haul through winter begins.

Easter is also a time when there’s a strong clash between tradition and commerce. Like Christmas Day, Easter has been set aside as two days when business ceases. And that doesn’t sit easily with many people.

Garden centres have fought their own battle, winning the right to open on Easter Sunday, but they’ve failed to make inroads into the Good Friday trading ban.

The larger centres, however, have thumbed their noses at the rules and decided the penalty for trading is worth the profits they’ll make.

Commercialism is the driver that has brought change to all corners of Kiwi life. The sanctity of the Kiwi weekend went years ago as the working week became a seven-day affair and the two most sacred of religious days are just hanging on to their non-trading status by a thread.

The drive for change has come from all corners, it’s been too strong to resist, but let’s hope as a nation we hold out against secularising the final two frontiers.

YOUR VIEW Skateboarders For the second time in as many days I have come across skateboarders riding on the road on Bridge Street.

The first time I tooted my horn and they reluctantly moved to the side of the road.

On Sunday at 8.15pm I was surprised again to see them riding in the middle of the road, no lights and in dark clothing.

I rang the Ashburton police and was connected to Timaru police.

Imagine my surprise to be told “it’s not illegal to ride a skateboard on the road”.

I stated I have a WOF and a rego so I’m entitled to be on the road. He said bikes don’t have WOF or rego and they can be on the road to which I replied, they need lights.

If, as he said, they were legally able to be on the road, my question is, who is at fault if they are in an accident and why did he say he would send someone out there to get them

wo weeks ago I broke out my gumboots and checked shirt, hired a car and enjoyed the kind of agricultural experience I had hitherto associated only with rural New Zealand towns.

The Bream Creek Show, north of Hobart, was evidence that we share more than a very similar flag with our cousins across the ditch.

I came across A&P shows rather late in life. In fact, my very first encounter with such an agricultural extravaganza was the Methven show of 2012.

I came out of that experience with a much better appreciation of the various types of sheep, a candyfloss sugar high and an insatiable desire to win a prize for produce.

Third in the open tomato category the following year is the closest I ever got, but my appetite for shows remains. When I heard the radio announcement for the Bream Creek Show this weekend, of course I just had to go along.

The fact that two of the entries in the giant pumpkin competition looked set to break the weight record for all of southern Australia just sealed the deal.

As we walked in the gate and surveyed the tents of food vendors, the produce hall and the wood-chopping poles, I felt quite at home. Methven had primed me well to explain the intricacies of the axe-men’s events to my European friends.

Next we toured “gourmet alley,” whereupon the smoke of an open range caught our attention. “Billy Tea and Dampers”, announced a hand-written sign, “Gold Coin”.

At that point, overtaken both by imagined scenes from Waltzing Matilda and the scent of the golden syrup topping, I needed no further prompting.

My friends were not so sure.

I agreed to meet them at the next display after fortifying myself with morning tea. The brew was most relaxing.

So far, so familiar. The next display tent, however, changed everything. From a distance, the square enclosure of blue tarpaulin looked quite innocuous.

It wasn’t until we got close enough to see the slim back form entwined in the display holder’s hands that the reality of the situation hit home: Australia has snakes. So too, it seems, do Australian A&P

Naturally, we lined up to pat the most venomous of the three varieties, before wandering over to the Lions stand for

hot chips. It’s just what you do at that kind of event.

As for the pumpkins, 422.5kg took the record, well and truly.

In fact, it was so exciting to watch the weigh-in that I had to go back for a second round of tea and damper just to recover.

This time, the Europeans also partook, with the verdict being that the Aussie camping staples were not half bad.

To top it all off, not one person asked me to “fush and chups” all day. Finally, I think I might actually be winning at Australia.

Makes 3-4 bottles 1kg tomatoes, peeled, cored, chopped 1l white vinegar 2 hot red chillis, deseeded and sliced (optional) 1C sugar 1-2T pickling spice, tied in muslin ■ In a large stainless steel saucepan, add tomatoes, half the vinegar and chillis. Bring to the boil.

Reduce heat and boil gently for 15-20 minutes. Allow to cool.

■ Transfer mixture to a blender or food processor with a metal blade and purée until smooth.

■ Return mixture to saucepan.

Add remaining vinegar, sugar and pickling spice bag.

■ Return to the boil, reduce heat and cook, stirring frequently for about 45 minutes or until mixture is almost the consistency of tomato sauce.

Sport Lydia notches another record Lydia Ko was in trouble in the ANA Inspiration.

Trying to tie Annika Sorenstam’s LPGA Tour record for consecutive rounds under par, the 17-year-old New Zealander was even par with three holes left and stuck behind five large trees to the left of the seventh fairway.

“It was a pretty nasty place to be,” Ko said.

To escape, she needed to a hit a sweeping, low hook.

She did, with the ball scampering onto the green and stopping pin-high 25 feet to the right.

“I said, ‘I’m going to try to hit the biggest hook,”’ Ko said.

“It would have probably looked really bad, that swing on camera, but it ended up being OK. “I had to hit it low enough and had to hit a slinging hook, so I didn’t end up in the bunker.”

She two-putted for par, then hit a 6-iron to 18 inches on the 158yard eighth to set up the birdie

She closed with a par on the par5 ninth for a 1-under 71 to match Sorenstam’s record of 29 straight rounds under par.

After getting banged up at the nationals, Ashburton teenager Bailie Perriton is looking forward to the “more relaxed” racing the Mountain Thunder in Methven today.

“It’s my fourth year of racing the Mountain Thunder, and I’m really looking forward to a bit of a chill out after the na-

tionals,” Perriton said.

“After all the pressure and stuff with nationals - it will be good to get back to some fun, cruisy racing and remembering what it’s all about.

“It’s my local event and it’s always fun.”

Perriton had a frustrating nationals as the 250cc Production champion stepped up to the 600cc Supersport class and

crashed in four of his eight races.

His last crash had him receive a concussion and a sprained wrist - putting him out of the final two races in the third round at Hampton Downs, and the entire fourth round at Taupo – but a month later he’s ready to roll.

“The body is in physical condition to race.

“Once it gets knocked around a bit over the course of some racing it (wrist) gets a bit sore.

Perriton will race in the buckets and an SV650 in the Formula Methven today.

After working pit lane for months, Baillie’s father Damien will also look to enjoy the weekend at Methven, racing on board a GSXR 1100 in the Pre 89 class.

Guptill thrust back into test frame

By DyLan CLeaver In-form opener Martin Guptill is primed for a test recall, with the opener to be named in the squads for the test and limitedovers components of the tour to England today.

On the outer in the longest form of the game since a disastrous test at Headingley two years ago - where he scored 1 and 3 batting at No6 - Guptill will be in a head-to-head battle with Hamish Rutherford for the second opening spot alongside Tom Latham.

It will cap a remarkable turnaround for Guptill, who was understood to be some way down the pecking order, behind the likes of fellow Aucklander Jeet Raval, as little as six months ago.

An outstanding World Cup campaign thrust Guptill back into the frame but it hasn’t so much been the volume of runs, but the manner in which he’s scored them.

Guptill, 28, has stripped down his technique and rebuilt it with the help of Martin Crowe.

Criticised in the test arena for playing with hard hands and becoming, essentially, a block-bash merchant, Crowe has looked to inject a little more sublety into his defensive game.

There is a hope that with more delicate footwork and the ability to play the ball under his eyes rather than his preferred method of playing the ball in front of him, he will be able to work singles more effectively.

Teams have often found it too easy to set fields to Guptill.

This in turn means he has a habit of becoming marooned, with the only release being higher risk boundary shots.

One of Crowe’s great mantras, passed on to him by batting wizard Barry Richards, was to scan the park and see the gaps, not the fielders.

During the World Cup, certainly, Guptill looked to have made progress in this area.

Despite a rocky summer, which had pundits calling for Latham to be tried as opener, Guptill received unwavering backing from coach and selector Mike Hesson and captain Brendon McCullum.

He repaid that in spades, going on to be the World Cup’s top

scorer with 547 runs at an average of 68.37.

He obliterated all sorts of New Zealand batting records with his brilliantly executed 237 in the quarter-final, when he moved smoothly through the gears on the way to 100, before opening the throttle and making a mockery of the West Indian attack.

The tour to England starts on May 8 with a warm-up match against Somerset at Taunton, followed by another first-class match at Worcestershire.

These two games shape as crucial in the battle for the second opening role, with the slot in the test at Lord’s starting May 21 likely to be given to the man in form.

The Spanish winner broke on three of 10 chances and was never in trouble against her German opponent.

“I played a good match, an important match like this is difficult,” said the winner.

“I just tried to play my game and enjoy it.

“Playing this final is an important event for me. I train in the off-season in hopes of playing a final like this.”

Petkovic came to the semi-final without the loss of a set in the tournament conceding just 18 games.

Dragons pack up for Knights challenge St George Illawarra believe the steel has returned to their much-criticised forward back after kick-starting their NRL season with back-to-back wins.

The Dragons began the new year slowly with underwhelming losses to Melbourne and the Wests Tigers, but had since found some form in moraleboosting defeats of Canberra and Manly.

But they face their biggest test so far this season in their round-five clash with unbeaten Newcastle at Hunter Stadium tonight for the inaugural Alex McKinnon Cup. The Knights have been the NRL’s early-season surprise packet under returning coach Rick Stone and, if the can extend their winning run to five games, it will be their best start since 2002 - the year after they won their last premiership.

But Dragons utility forward Jack de Belin says the joint venture are determined to have a say in that.

NRL chief executive Dave Smith has been suspended from driving for the past three months.

Smith, who is responsible for overseeing sanctions handed out to rugby league’s errant stars, lost his driver’s license due to an accumulation of traffic infringements. Under NSW law any driver who totals more than 13 demerit points over a threeyear period, for offences such as speeding, is disqualified for three months.

In brief Bekhuis shining light In a season full of gloom for the Blues, Josh Bekhuis, a new signing from the Highlanders, is standing out like a fairhaired beacon. Bekhuis, all 2m and 115kg of him, is the Blues’ leading lineout winner this season but it is his ball carrying and tackling which have caught the eye. His charging runs against the Lions at North Harbour, especially in the first half, might have been a crumb of consolation for John Kirwan in a match with precious little else to cheer about, and now the 28-year-old is poised to resume hostilities against the Chiefs after his progress was halted last weekend by concussion. Rakaia, Celtic claim first wins

Southern made it two from two in the Combined Country Cup rugby competition as they held off Saracens in Hinds yesterday.

The win had Southern join Methven, Oxford, Glenmark and Burnham-Dunsandel as unbeaten teams after the rest of the Easter round was completed on Thursday night.

In section one Rakaia and Celtic claimed their first wins as Celtic saw off Southbridge 1812 and Rakaia had to come back at the death to beat Prebbleton 13-10.Glenmark took down defending champions Lincoln 44-20, Oxford beat West Melton 26-19 and Kaiapoi held off Hornby 28-26.

In section two Methven secured a second straight bonus point win beating Rolleston 47-3 while Hampstead pushed 2013 runners-up Waihora in a 10-14 loss. Darfield beat Ohoka 27-12 and Burnham-Dunsandel beat Ashley 22-7.

Southern v Saracens After racing out to a 24-8 lead at home Southern had to hold off Saracens for a 30-24 win in Hinds. Southern had two tries to flanker Jon Dampney and one from hooker Jason Gutsell that were all converted by first five Dan McNally to go with a penalty for a 24-8 lead.

After a dominant opening 40 minutes the host looked ready to kick on, but instead had to settle for two penalties from McNally in the second half which in the end were all they needed to finish six points clear at full time.

“The boys buttoned off and

Saracens came back at us,” Southern coach Jason Rickard said. “We never converted pressure into points and although we scrambled well our front line defence was average at best.”

Saracens scored two tries straight after halftime and then made Southern defend stoutly for a large part of the half.

They held on when it mattered most, denying Saracens and making the most of their limited opportunities to hold on for the win.

“We came into this season focusing on the first two weeks and picking up a couple of wins and we have achieved that so it’s back to the drawing board to refocus on Tuesday.”

Celtic v Southbridge Celtic coach Warren Mackenzie described his side’s 18-12 win over Southbridge as the best performance since he took over last season.

“It was the performance we have been looking for,” Mackenzie said. “It’s the best they have played since me and Phil [Prendergast] took over, and has hopefully laid the template for more to come. I’ve tried to hammer it home that it starts up front and our forward pack monstered them up front”.

Celtic scored a try in each half while Southbridge could only muster four penalties as the hosts defence proved a tough line to crack.

Wing Elijah Matalomani scored in the first half to go with two penalties from Nathan McCloy to lead 11-9 at the break.

With time up Celtic looked to put the ball into touch but prop Dominic Visessio probably wasn’t the man to do it. He booted the ball straight up the middle for Southbridge’s Willie McGoon to launch a big run for the corner only for Visessio, who had earned a yellow card earlier, to make amends with a try saving tackle in the corner to deny the visitors a chance to steal the win.

Prebbleton v Rakaia Rakaia had to come came up with a late try to overcome Prebbleton 13-10 in Prebbleton.

For the second straight week Rakaia scored a late try with the game in the balance, but this time it was enough for the win.

“We were leading all the way through until they scored with 10 minutes but we scored again with five minutes to go,” Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft said.

“It was an awful game of night rugby, with no structure and plenty of mistakes.”

A Nathan Fridd penalty and try to centre Seta Koroitamana had Rakaia leading 8-0 until the 70th minutes when a penalty and converted try had Prebbleton take the lead.

However, Rakaia were able to hit straight back through loose forward Mark Andrew to come through for the win.

Rolleston v Methven Methven produced a second straight bonus point win with another strong second half to run away 47-3 winners over Rolleston.

Methven went to the break ahead 21-3 after tries to wing

Nick Wackwitz, lock Maikeli Mudu and centre Fa’aitu Tuamoheloa, with fullback Dan Maw converting all three.

Maw had to slot in at first five after Richard Catherwood was forced off with a groin strain after setting up Mudu’s try.

Second-five Andy Hamilton bagged the bonus point try shortly after the break, before Wakwitz completed his hattrick with tries either side of fellow wing Brenton Connell’s trywith a further three conversions from Maw. Coach Dale Palmer said he’ll take the five points but there was plenty to work on.

Waihora v Hampstead Hampstead were held scoreless in the second half to be run down by host Waihora 10-14.

After an initial Waihora onslaught where Hampstead held their line but conceding two penalties the visitors were dictating terms.

Loose forward Tevita Ula barged over off the back of a scrum for a try and fellow flanker Toafa Toli converted to go with a penalty for a 10-6 led at the break.

In the second half Hampstead had their chances but a failure to put points on the board meant a second win went begging.

“We started the second half quite well but they just ground us down and a lack of discipline cost us,” Hampstead coach Regan Broker said.

“We gave away a few penalties and they ended up scoring a try to take the lead. We were hard on attack in the last 10 minutes but just couldn’t finish anything off because we were panicking.”

Patience key for Perry’s return

Tim Perry’s second season at the Crusaders is still to get under way as the prop continues to recover from an Achilles injury.

Perry damaged his Achilles playing for Tasman in the ITK Cup semi-finals requiring surgery which has kept him on the side-lines so far in the 2015 Super 15.

“It’s coming along,” Perry said.

“I’m still four or five weeks away from playing I guess. Next week I’ll slowly get back into it and a week later I should be full training.

“I’ve still been training. Doing fitness, tackling and a bit of ball skills but no other contact yet. No live scrummaging – just hitting the scrum machine.”

The Crusaders aren’t taking any chances in his recovery, needing the prop to be available.

In the World Cup year the onus has been put on All Black squad members to manage their workloads and take a couple of weeks off.

That means the Crusaders are set to be without looseheads Wyatt Crockett and Joe Moody for a few games, making the

return of Perry crucial to coach Todd Blackadder’s crusade.

That also means they won’t rush him back.

“There is no comeback date pencilled in.

It’s just monitoring how it reacts to the different load at training and reading how it responds to gauge when you’re right to play.

“The last thing I want to do is blow it again coming back prematurely.”

His path back to the Crusaders will likely come via club rugby for Rakaia in the Combined Country Cup. “I’ll probably play some club rugby first to get the match fitness back up before getting into contention for selection again.”

Perry’s team-mates are in South Africa for the second weekend to face the Sharks, coming off a 19-31 loss to the Bulls.

“Three wins from six isn’t that good so it’s a bit of a must win already for us. We need to start winning consistently.”

After the Sharks in South Africa this weekend, the Crusaders play the other New Zealand franchises back-to-back, playing the Highlanders, Chiefs and Blues at home before a trip to Wellington to Tim Perry at Crusaders’ practice. meet the high-flying Hurricanes.

A day after Dante Exum silenced his critics with a blistering NBA performance, star player Damian Lillard has described the Aussie teenager’s future as “bright”. Exum was ranked earlier this week as the worst starting point guard in the NBA by US sports giant ESPN, thanks to an underwhelming rookie season with Utah Jazz. But he responded in spectacular fashion, tallying a career-best assist total to help the Jazz see off the Denver Nuggets 98-84. Exum made 12 assists for Utah yesterday the most by any player in the team this season - along with a rebound and two points. Italian team Luna Rossa has announced it will withdraw from the America’s Cup after teams voted to reduce the size of boats to be sailed in the 2017 regatta in Bermuda.

“Following a careful evaluation of the serious implications of this unprecedented initiative, Team Luna Rossa confirms that it will withdraw from the 35th America’s Cup,” a statement from the team said.

Last week America’s Cup organisers said a majority of teams favoured the move from 62-foot (19m) catamarans to 48foot (14.65m) boats.

While the AC62 Class Rule could be changed only with unanimous consent, organis-

ers led by two-time defending champion Oracle Team USA said that they had agreed with the other squads to amend the protocol to change the class rule with a majority vote.

“Team Luna Rossa indeed considers illegitimate the procedure adopted and founded on an evident abuse of process by surreptitious use of procedures to modify the protocol in order to overturn the class rule, which instead requires the unanimity of the teams entered,” said Luna Rossa, which is backed by the fashion house Prada.

“This is an attempt to introduce boats that are substantially monotypes, and in

total contrast with the ultracentennial tradition of the America’s Cup, not to mention a two-month extension period to introduce further modifications to the rules, decided by the majority.”

The rule change was passed despite Luna Rossa saying last week it “will be obliged to withdraw” if the race boat was downsized.

Team New Zealand supported the Italians.

Team New Zealand are “deeply saddened” by the withdrawal, according to a statement released by the team.

Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa are close allies and share common values of

fair play and integrity, the statement says.

Team CEO Grant Dalton today said, “We are quite frankly in disbelief that the continued actions of the America’s Cup Event Authority have lead to the withdrawal of our great friends Luna Rossa.

“It sends a clear and unmistakable message that the selfserving manoeuvring of rules within sports oldest trophy has consequences for not only the America’s Cup but also all of sailing. “ While the downsizing was considered a cost-cutting move, Luna Rossa was believed to be at an advanced stage in its development of a larger boat. - AP

Ashburton’s House of Travel team has scooped up a national travel award for the second year in a row.

And crucial in that success has been the support of the Ashburton District’s travelling community and the knowledge and dedication of her staff, said owner Maxine Whiting.

The Ashburton branch was named top performing medium-sized outlet of the year, judged across a range of criteria that included growth in bookings and client numbers.

Winning the Travel Agent of the Year in the Travel Digest Travel Industry Awards for a second time, came as a huge surprise, Mrs Whiting said.

“You know whether you’ve performed well during the year but you have no idea how you’ve done compared to others in your group.”

The success belonged to the entire team who were all high performers and who had a great skill and knowledge base, she said.

“Our whole team loves what we do, and we’re passionate about giving our customers the knowledge and confidence to travel, whether

it be close to home for a short break, that once-in-a-lifetime trip, or an OE.” Travel patterns and client expectations were constantly changing and today clients and agents often worked together to plan and book a trip.

People had usually done plenty of research before they moved to the next step of making bookings, she said.

“You build itineraries together now and that’s good because you know what they want and you get it right a lot quicker for people.”

Clients were also becoming a lot more adventurous in the travel destinations they were choosing, Mrs Whiting said.

She’s worked in the travel industry for more than 30 years, starting out in Dalgety Travel.

She has had sole ownership of the Ashburton branch for more than three years.

To win the award, Ashburton’s House of Travel competed against around 30 other branches.

Category size is determined by turnover, and with a few years of solid growth behind it, Mrs Whiting said Ashburton was close to moving into the large business category.

A businesswoman, who is a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, has successfully appealed an order requiring her to return $11.2 million to a Maori land trust.

A three-way bun fight is now likely over the money when the case returns to the Maori Land Court.

That same court last year found that Bev Adlam had “committed a blatant breach of trust” by taking money for self-gain from the process of developing two geothermal power stations on family land in Kawerau.

Adlam was then ordered to pay $11.2 million from the sale of one station to a trust which administers the land it was on.

She was also ordered to pay it $2.4 million which she received from the other energy project.

The businesswoman, who was instrumental in developing the stations, was also ordered to pay $823,000 in

interest. Adlam appealed the decision to the Maori Appellate Court, which heard her case last August.

In particular, she challenged the order that she was to pay the entire $11.2 million of profit to the administering trust – known as the Bath Trust.

She argued it was first necessary to establish which part of these profits was attributable to the use of assets of another trust that administered neighbouring land which the station used to generate power.

The Maori Appellate Court, made of up five judges, partly upheld Adlam’s appeal.

The court revoked the earlier order requiring Adlam to account to the Bath Trust for the entire $11.2 profit.

It sent the proceedings back to the Maori Land Court to determine what portion of the profit is property of the Bath Trust.

Iran nuclear deal ‘historic mistake’ A framework nuclear deal between Iran and world powers will be remembered as a “historic mistake” that gave Tehran legitimacy in its bid to get the bomb, Israeli officials say.

“If an agreement is reached on the basis of this framework, it is a historic mistake which will make the world far more dangerous,” the government officials said on condition of anonymity in a briefing to journalists.

“The framework gives international legitimacy to Iran’s nuclear programme, the only aim of which is to produce a nuclear bomb.”

The outline agreement aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear drive was clinched after marathon talks in Switzerland and marks a major breakthrough in a 12-year stand-off between Iran and the West, which has long feared Tehran wants to build an atomic bomb.

Israel has warned relentlessly against such a deal and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier yesterday an agreement would have to “significantly roll back Iran’s nuclear capabilities”.

He says any potential for a nuclear-armed Tehran threatens the Jewish state’s exist-

ence. US President Barack Obama said yesterday he would speak to Netanyahu to reassure him of steadfast US support for Israel’s security.

Israeli Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz said all options were open for Israel.

“If we have no choice, we have no choice ... the military option is on the table,” he said.

The “parameters” for the accord between Tehran and six world powers will be fleshed out into a comprehensive agreement by June 30 in an attempt to end more than a decade of tensions with the Islamic republic.

Failure may set the United States and Israel on a road to military action to thwart Iran’s nuclear drive and keep Tehran out in the cold on the international stage.

The so-called P5+1 group – the United States, Britain, China, France and Russia plus Germany – hope the deal will make it virtually impossible for Iran to make nuclear weapons.

Iran, one of the world’s major oil-producing countries, has always denied seeking the atomic bomb saying its activities are for energy generation and research.

Co-pilot researched cockpit doors suicide German prosecutors say the co-pilot suspected of deliberately crashing a Germanwings plane in the French Alps had searched online for information about suicide and cockpit doors in the week before the disaster.

A tablet computer which prosecutors said was used by Andreas Lubitz was found in a search of a flat he used in Duesseldorf, the prosecutor’s office in the western city said in a statement.

“The browser history wasn’t erased, in particular the search terms called up on this device in the period from March 16 to March 23 were able to be retraced,” it said yesterday.

“The user focused on the one hand on medical treatment methods, in addition to informing himself about ways to commit suicide,” it added.

Bleach linked to childhood infections

By Jennifer CoCkerell Passive exposure to bleach at home has been linked to higher rates of infection in children, according to new research.

A study led by the University of Leuven – KU Leuven – in Belgium found the chance of an episode of flu was 20 per cent higher and recurrent tonsillitis 35 per cent greater amongst children whose parents used bleach to clean their home.

Similarly, the risk of any recurrent infection was 18 per cent higher amongst children of regular bleach users.

Researchers said “the high frequency of use of disinfecting cleaning products - caused by erroneous belief, reinforced

by advertising, that our homes should be free of microbes – makes the modest effects reported in our study of public health concern”.

They calculated the results by looking at the potential impact of exposure to bleach in the homes of more than 9000 children between the ages of six and 12 attending more than 50 different schools in the Netherlands, Finland and Spain.

Their parents were asked to complete a questionnaire on the number and frequency of times their children had flu, tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, otitis (ear infection) and pneumonia in the preceding 12 months. They were also asked if they used bleach to clean their homes at

least once a week.

Use of bleach was common in Spain (72 per cent of respondents) but rare in Finland (7 per cent).

The study, which is published in the British Medical Journal, also noted that all Spanish schools were cleaned with bleach, while Finnish schools were not.

Researchers said that after taking into account a number of influential factors, such as passive smoking at home, the presence of household mould, and whether bleach was used in the children’s schools, overall the prevalence of infections, both single or recurrent, was higher in children of bleach users.

“I pulled back and said, ‘Something’s wrong’!,” Brandi McGlathery told Al.com. “And the doctor said, ‘No, he’s perfectly fine.’ Then I shouted, ‘He doesn’t have a nose’!”

Eli Thompson began breathing through his mouth right away on March 4 at a Mobile, Alabama, hospital, McGlathery said.

Not having a nose “didn’t faze him at all”, she said.

Eli was born with a rare condition known as complete congenital arhinia, his mother said.

The condition affects fewer than 40 other people around the world, the University of South Alabama Children’s & Women’s Hospital said in a statement on its Facebook account.

The baby was moved to the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s & Women’s Hospital and had a tracheotomy at five days old, Brandi McGlathery said.

“Between the nurses here and Ronald McDonald House, everyone has gone above and beyond,” she said. “The nurse from the pod comes to check on her ‘boyfriend’. She got attached to him.”

Eli will have to grow past puberty before his nasal passageways could be rebuilt surgically, his mother said. Until then, she said, she wants to spare him any unnecessary facial surgeries.

Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast said in a statement yesterday that the new perfume “releases more of its aroma when it comes into contact with moisture”.
