Mid Canterbury schools preparing for their annual pet days are having to factor in the threat of mycoplasma bovis.

Parents at primary schools including Mt Somers Springburn School and Hinds School are being warned that calves will not be allowed at upcoming events.

In a newsletter to parents, Mt Somers Springburn School advised the decision to exclude the calf section had already

been made at a board meeting in June, and they had since received a letter from Dairy NZ advising them not to allow calves at pet days due to the risk of contamination. One family at the school was offering lambs for any children who were intending to bring a calf and now will not be able to.

At Hinds School, students who want to enter a calf in their school Country Day at the end of next month are being asked to do so virtually.

Children will present a video of their

calf, then judges will visit the top six calves in person on farms.

In the letter to schools, DairyNZ advised “no-one wants to ban calf days; we know how much children and adults love the day. In this heightened time of biosecurity risk, the risk of mycoplasma bovis being spread from animal to animal must be considered.”

Name change after 70 years

A change of name will see the Ashburton Licensing Trust disappear off the radar in the Ashburton District.

For almost 70 years the trust has been the driver of hospitality businesses in Ashburton and the disperser of funds to countless community groups, but come early November the trust’s name will be gone.

Over the past two years it has sold off most of its businesses, becoming a landlord, and to complete that changed business model it is now about to change its name.

Shortly the trust will be doing business as the Braided Rivers Community Trust.

But while its name is changing, everything else will stay the same, said trust board chair Fay Watson.

It will be business as usual for the community, grants will continue to be made, board members will be elected three-yearly, books will be audited and its geographic boundaries will remain the same.

The new name was chosen because it reflected the organisation’s roots in the Mid Canterbury plains, Watson said.

“There will inevitably be some

confusion around the name change, but it’s a logical progression for us and we can now tick it off the action list as part of our changing model.”

There will be a legal process that moves the trust’s property and other assets to the community trust and at the same time the licensing trust will be dissolved, she said.

“The thing that won’t change though is community ownership and control and profits from a community trust can be applied to very similar purposes as for a licensing trust.”

Because the trust’s main income is now from rental income

rather than from running hospitality venues, it no longer fitted into the licensing trust model.

Its new status as a community trust still allows it to hold liquor licences.

“The change is a no brainer; there’s no downside,” Watson said.

The change from licensing trust to community trust will be publicly notified and if 50 people or more call for it, a public meeting will be held to discuss the change.

The name change will not affect the trust’s Lion Foundation grants. Funds for this come from gaming machine profits.

Free wills for those donating to local charity Five Ashburton legal firms are offering their services for free to people making wills that include one of Ashburton’s home-grown charities on their beneficiary list.

Wills month starts today and the law firms have banded together to help enhance the giving power of the Advance Ashburton Charitable Foundation.

Simple new wills and minor adjustments to existing wills can be made free of charge during the month, providing those wills make provision for the foundation. Wills month is held annually to encourage people to consider giving something towards a charity that will benefit their community.

For Advance Ashburton, as well as creating an opportunity for people to gift money from their estate to the foundation, it was also about creating an opportunity for people to discuss philanthropy, executive officer Sandi Wood said.

“I’m delighted our local law firms have banded together to help enhance our community’s ability to make it even easier to enable strategic giving. They got in behind this, no hesitation,” she said.

Schools ban calves because of bovis risk From P1 Technical policy advisor Nita Harding said mixing young animals and returning them to their home farm was not worth the risk.

“We recommended that, while the mycoplasma bovis eradication programme is under way, schools and those managing calf days look for alternatives to calf day.”

A number of local schools have also been advertising an event being organised by the Aorangi Holstein Friesian Club, who – in a bid to rescue calf pet days – are providing an On Farm Calf Club in the area. Stock will be judged on their own farms, with no need to travel.

The competition is open to any dairy breeds and any child and calf combos.

Prizes will be given out to children who are best able to lead their calf, answer simple knowledge questions about their calf and take the best selfie with their calf.

Phil Twyford has thrown open the doors and given the public its first glimpse inside the first completed KiwiBuild home.

The housing minister led media on a guided tour of the first batch of KiwiBuild’s “modest starter” homes at the McLennan development in Papakura yesterday.

He confirmed the ballot will open for the first completed KiwiBuild properties in a week.

The 18 McLennan houses will be sold through the ballot which runs for four weeks.

New group helps families of addicts

An Ashburton woman is on a personal crusade to help families affected by addiction.

Catching up with a friend whose son was addicted to methamphetamine, the woman (who wanted only to be identified as Clare), said she understood that addiction hurt more people than just the addict themselves.

“My friend’s life was a mess. Her son was living with her, actively using P and she just didn’t know what to do.”

That started Clare thinking. If one person was feeling desperate because of a family member’s

addiction, she knew others would too.

“I started to realise that this is a big problem in this town, probably much bigger than people realise. I wanted to do something to help, so I started up this group.”

The group is Families Impacted

by Addiction. It meets weekly and it’s basically an open door to anyone who needs support, she said.

When Clare opens up the meeting room door, she has no idea who will turn up. Sometimes it’s five, another time it’s 10 but they’re all bound by one need, support as they deal with the impact on their lives of a family member with an addiction problem.

“People find us on Facebook, they see posters around town or in doctors’ surgeries, but they all come along because they’re desperate to find someone who can help,” Clare said.

The meetings are little more than a casual gathering where people can talk – if they want to.

“No questions are asked and there’s no judgment. We want people to know that there’s no shame in this, that the best thing they can do to help themselves is to talk about it,” she said.

Families living with addiction could easily become isolated.

“They won’t talk to friends and their friends just drop away. Often

they’ll feel shame because a child of theirs is on drugs. They get the feeling they’re a bad parent or a bad husband or wife for this to happen.”

Once someone became part of the support group they would always have someone who’d shared a similar journey to talk to, Clare said.

“Often when people come they don’t even need to tell much of their story, we all understand and we know that if you have an addict in your family they’ll do just about anything to get money for drugs and they’ll manipulate their family.”

Kind hands plant kanuka in special plot

More than 1500 new plants now call the Harris Scientific Reserve home, thanks to a solid work session from dozens of volunteers yesterday.

Children and adults from around the district pulled on gloves and gumboots to transform several empty areas of the 11 hectare site near Ashburton.

The reserve protects one of the last stands of dryland kanuka in Canterbury, Ashburton Forest and Bird chairwoman Edith Smith said, and planting days over the years have added hundreds of kowhai trees, cabbage trees and natives.

Yesterday, 1000 kanuka were among those going in the ground.

Smith said it was great to have the input of various groups at planting days over the years.

Young scouts were among those helping in their own area yesterday, along with more experienced adults.

The ongoing project to return the land to its former, native state began in the late 1970s.

It was a dream of the original owner of the site, the late Arthur Harris.

it’s about the people affected by addiction. It’s about support and helping them understand they can’t stop the addiction; the addict has to really want to stop using.

They have to stop blaming themselves, start becoming empowered and understand that the addict’s problem is not theirs, Clare said.

She plans to hold an information evening later this month where experts will speak on the challenges of living with an addict and how to find their way through the challenges this presents.

The support group meets on Tuesdays at 6.30pm at the Tinwald Bowling Pavilion.

Crashes in heavy traffic Heavier traffic on State Highway One at the weekend gave rise to two incidents on Saturday.

Emergency services attended one crash near Longbeach in the morning, along with another near Hinds in the afternoon.

The first occurred at the intersection of State Highway One and Longbeach Road shortly after 9am, when a car and a motorbike collided.

A police spokesperson said it was a very minor incident, with no reported injuries.

The road was not blocked.

Later on, at around 3.45pm, three people sustained moderate injuries during a single vehicle crash near the Hinds River bridge.

Emergency services including Fire and Emergency, Police and St John Ambulance arrived to discover that a ute had rolled off the road and into a ditch.

The passengers were able to be treated by St John at the scene and did not require transportation to hospital.

Doggy issues keep staff busy

The number of designated dog exercise areas in Ashburton is increasing, but not every dog owner is clear about where they may and may not let their dogs run free.

While Argyle Park is one of those free-ranging areas, this does not apply to the entire park, said Ashburton District Council acting chief executive Jane Donaldson.

“We’re having to patrol this area quite regularly now because only part of the area is designated and quite a few people are letting

their dogs run around on the sports fields,” she said.

The western end of the park is the only official section for freerunning dogs.

A new fenced dog park was added to dog exercise options during the year near the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park and this, along with the William Street park, were well used.

Over the year to June 30, dog control statistics showed that not every dog owner in the Ashburton District was a good dog owner, with 1246 complaints made to dog control contractors.

Those complaints resulted in

115 infringement notices, earning the Ashburton District Council $23,300 in fines.

The greatest number of offences were for failing to register a dog, 73, followed by failure to keep a dog controlled or confined, 31. A total of 6576 dogs are registered as living in the Ashburton district. Of those nine are listed as dangerous and 52 as menacing.

When it came to complaints about dogs and dog owners, 659 were for wandering dogs, 186 for lost dogs and 198 for barking dogs.

There were 48 complaints of

dog attacks – eight on people, 10 on other dogs and six on stock.

Complaints about dogs that were wandering or aggressive numbered 27.

During the year 215 dogs were impounded. Of those 22 were euthanised and 35 rehomed. The remainder were reunited with their owners.

The number of registered dogs in the district is now more than 300 fewer than in the 2015/2016 year. The number of offences, however is significantly higher, up from 65 to 115 with the most significant growth in complaints relating to barking dogs.

Pacifica minister hears school aspirations

With more than 62 per cent of Pacific people now being born in New Zealand, it’s time to consider how to make the place home, an auditorium full of guests at Ashburton College was told on Friday.

Minister for Pacific Peoples, Hon Aupito William Sio, visited the college to hear how Ashburton’s Pacifica youth are faring.

“When parliament is not sitting I try to be out and about in the communities,” he said. “I want to hear about the dreams and aspirations of younger people.”

He said he had a longstanding relationship with Ashburton College, who contribute annually to Polyfest and other initiatives.

It was not just students, but parents and teachers who gathered to hear him speak.

Before splitting up into groups to think and share their ideas, Sio gave them a number of points to consider.

“What does success look like or feel like? Do you think language, faith and culture are something you will want to pass on?” he said.

“Do you still feel the link back to the islands? Do you feel a sense of belonging?”

Guests were also challenged to think about any issues or concerns they may have for the future – be it the sale of alcohol or the safety of their families.

$20m school rebuild The Government is expected to announce funding today of more than $20 million for a full rebuild of Wainuiomata High School in the Hutt Valley. The rebuild of the school was an election promise last year by Labour, and followed a promise by the then National government to spend $12m to fix weathertightness issues and modernise the school.

The school, which was founded in 2002 when Wainuiomata and Parkway colleges merged at the site of Parkway College, has buildings dating back to the early 1970s and many of those built since the merger have suffered weathertightness issues.

Match called off A spectator who charged the pitch during an Auckland football match allegedly hurled racial abuse at an opposition player before throwing a punch at him. The incident kicked off when a North Shore United player made a hard tackle on a younger member of the Forrest Hill Milford United squad.

A witness said when the Forrest Hill Milford player – a high school student – went down, his father took exception to the challenge, ran onto the pitch, abused the North Shore United player and took a swing at him. North Shore United backed up the alleged racial and physical abuse in a statement released on social media.

Consents show bigger homes Million dollar homes were once a rarity in Ashburton, but building consents for these are now being processed at the rate of one or two each month.

And those big builds are typical of what is happening across the home building landscape in the Ashburton District, says council building services manager Michael Wong.

“Our building consent numbers are down, but the consents we are getting are for bigger and bigger homes”, he said. Over the past five years the average size of a home built in the district has risen from 230 square metres to 400.

For the first seven months of this year the 417 building consents were lodged, down from 567 for the same period last year. The number of Lim issued in July broke all records for the council at 84 following a larger than usual number of first home buyers, he said.

Long-time motorsport photographer Kevin Corin was killed in a “freak accident” after being hit by a rally car during a one-day event in North Canterbury on Saturday. Corin, who had more than 45 years of experience, died while at the Royce Watson Memorial Hanmer Rally which ran across several forestry roads around Hanmer Springs and was run by the Autosport Club. He had been a fixture of Canterbury rallying and motorsport photography for the past eight years, attending every event on in the area, Autosport Club president Graham Wilson said. “He is very a good guy and he will be sadly missed,” Wilson said. Although an investigation was currently underway, Wilson said it appeared to be a horrible accident.

Museum numbers soar

Chance for students to receive funds boost

Ashburton’s museum is breaking all records for numbers through the door, showing a 132 per cent increase for the year to June 30.

One of the big contributors to the increase in visitor numbers was the opening of the Kate and Hank Murney Room that increased the museum’s ability to

host larger touring exhibitions, museum director Tanya Robinson said.

Opening hours had been extended and this meant more research inquiries and an increase in school and group visits. An increasing number of community partnerships saw group visits hosted rise from 85 to 128 over the year.

Growth in patronage was coming across all ages, with numbers now belonging to the museum adventurers club rising to more than 300, Robinson said. And this showed 72.9 per cent of visitors were locals, 15.9 per cent came from around New Zealand and 6.6 per cent were international visitors.

“Many people tell us they have

travelled from outside the district especially to visit museum programmes and in-house curated exhibitions such as Tekau, Don’t be Dull,” she said.

Research inquiries were steadily growing and sat at 899 for the past year and over the July school holidays more than 3600 people accessed museum programmes, she said.

Nurses to spend more training time in district Enrolled nursing students from Ashburton will next year have an opportunity to complete their clinical work in their home hospital.

Ara Institute of Canterbury will next year roll out the regional delivery of the New Zealand Diploma of Enrolled Nursing to West Coast, Timaru, Ashburton, Oamaru, Nelson and Marlborough-based students in partnership with regional district health boards (DHBs).

And that will mean for local students a large percentage of their training time will be spent within the district.

The progamme was approved by the Nursing Council New Zealand to enable learners to access a nursing qualification that prepares them for practice under the direction of a registered nurse.

The 18-month course and the scope of practice are quite broad, said Rose Mitchell, programme leader for New Zealand Diploma in Enrolled Nursing at Ara. “Our graduates can work in hospital settings, community and residential care, so technically they can work in any area of health.”

Students can now also study in their own district due to collaboration between Ara and local DHBs. This guarantees them six different types of placements and enables them to gain a broad un-

The new delivery model has been planned to give students the best chance of success. At the beginning of the course they will get to know each other and the Christchurch-based students and share classes with them.

Ashburton students will be required to travel to Christchurch for the first two weeks then a further four times for one-week blocks over the 18 months. The rest of the time they will study online from home but complete their clinical placements at Ashburton Hospital, supported by a

clinical tutor.

The new delivery model will mean more student and graduates will be working in regional environments. It will give students immersion in the environments that they will study in, work in and contribute to as graduates.

A group of benefactors are keen to ease the financial burden for students from the Ashburton District.

Through Advance Ashburton, those Mary Ross benefactors have established several scholarships that are available for students who are completing tertiary studies, industry training or personal.

Applications are now open for a range of scholarships with Advance Ashburton grants chairwoman Mary Ross saying she was delighted the foundation was able to help people achieve their goals.

“Thanks to the generosity of local people and organisations, we have many scholarships available to people with strong links to our community,” she said.

Generous benefactors included UFS, Jaycees, Alister Smyth and Bob and Alan Johnston.

These individuals and organisations had donated funds to the foundation which had been invested and the income from those investments is now used for causes supported by each donor.

These included scholarships for tertiary education, personal development and trade training, Ross said.

Feedback from past recipients indicated the scholarships made a significant difference in their lives, she said.

M

eaning “empty hand”, kara-te has its origins in Okinawa hundreds of years ago.

Chinese traders introduced variants of their native martial arts, which were adapted by the locals into a style called “te”. The art evolved into several different styles and developed over the coming centuries, remaining mostly in Okinawa until its introduction to mainland Japan in the 1900s.

From there, it was streamlined and popularised into what it has become today, one of the world’s most practised martial arts.

As its name suggests, kara-te is an empty-handed sport, making use of no weapons, only one’s feet and hands for blocking, striking and kicking.

The art itself incorporates a variety of self-defence techniques, as well as sparring and competitive elements and has a distinct philosophy that aims to make practitioners humble, confident, disciplined, and respectful.

Master Gichin Funakoshi, founder of the dominant Shotokan karate style and the father of modern karate, once said, “The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants”.

Karate training as a whole can be thought of as having three major components – kihon (basics), kumite (sparring) and kata (training forms) – and while each may be trained separately, they are really quite inter-dependent.

tals” and involves the repetition of various basic elements of karate, from basic stances and strikes, to breathing and the most basic of forms.

Kata, simply explained, is “a series of karate techniques performed the same way each time in a predetermined pattern”.

It is introduced to ‘solidify’ the basic techniques and to extend them further to combinations of basics. It’s a foundation that teaches the stances, movement and the principles of using arms, legs, hands and feet in a prescribed way.

Kata also teaches breathing, rhythm, fighting spirit and harmony of movement of the entire body.

The first and last movement of every kata is a bow (rei). “Rei” is a component of the Japanese word “reigi” that translates to mean respect, courtesy or good manners or simply put ... etiquette.

Etiquette develops discipline and from this discipline structure the karate practitioner gains a better understanding of the concepts being taught.

e been running Kiwi English for about four years now and the chefs from Miyabi and Charming Thai restaurants have been attending for about three of those years.

Our classes are often experiential.

We have been to the supermar-

ket, Staveley bush, Lake Hood canoeing, garden walks, berry picking and such like.

Recently we went on a class trip to Wellington. We had a whole day to explore.

The great thing with Wellington is most things are in walking distance, so we could see a lot and

keep fit at the same time.

First stop was the Havana Coffee Works before Te Papa was ready to open its doors to us. Lots of New Zealand history to absorb.

Back in class studying the road code We are back in class with our next group of students studying the road code.

This group has a wide range of nationalities represented. We have participants from the Ukraine, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Brazil and the Philippines. It is wonderful to have such a diverse group and we look forward to getting to know them over the next couple of months.

The group had their first class with tutor Gayle, from the Ashburton Learning Centre.

In this session we learned what the requirements are for sitting your learner licence test, road signs and emergencies.

We still have 1-2 spots open!

Our first group of ladies are now out on the road with their mentors and are going really

well. The feedback from the mentors has been fantastic with one of the ladies now ready for her first professional lesson.

Our mentors have been generous with their time and seem to be enjoying it as much as the ladies are. We are very grateful to our volunteer mentors and our childcare ladies for giving up their time so freely.

ne of the biggest issues for newcomers to town is meeting people, which is the reason we have a potluck dinner party (and it’s ok not to bring something if you couldn’t find the time) every last Friday of the month.

Our July meeting had been at the Masonic Lodge here in Ashburton. We were a small group, but had a great time learning about the Freemasons, apparently the oldest service group in the world, dating back 300 years!

The Masons have a reputation of being a secretive group, but in fact they are open and welcoming, the secrets only involving their ceremonies.

These originate from the past, from a time in which master Masons were the craftsmen building cathedrals and palaces and were awarded a lot of respect.

However, as many people in that era were illiterate, you couldn’t ask for a diploma to check if a Mason was actually qualified. That’s why they came up with secret “rituals” and passwords. It was the best way for one Mason to recognise the skills and professional level of another.

The basic, local organisational unit of Freemasonry is the Lodge. The Lodges are usually supervised and governed at the regional level (usually coterminous with either a state, province, or national border) by a Grand Lodge. There is no international, worldwide Grand Lodge that supervises all of Freemasonry; each Grand Lodge is independent.

New Zealand is somewhat unique in which it has connections to four different Grand Lodges. Freemasonry has operated in New Zealand since at least 1837 under the older English, Irish, and Scottish constitutions, and the Grand Lodge of New Zealand was constituted on April 30, 1890.

All Masons state they believe in a supreme being, also referred to sometimes as the Great Architect of the Universe.

However, it is a neutral designation used within Freemasonry to represent the deity neutrally, as there are members from every country and religion.

Being a Mason is also a bond shared across borders. Masons recognise strangers for being masons as well (usually by their ring) and often would welcome them and offer companionship and help.

PROFILE - Phodiso Tuwane

M

y name is Phodiso Tuwane, I was born in Botswana and I have been in Ashburton since March this year.

I am a dentist at the Dentistry on Parkside clinic.

I grew up in a farming community which is a similar size to Ashburton were my family still live. My mum is a primary school teacher and my dad is a beef farmer. I also have a brother and sister who still live near my parents.

English was taught at school and at home my family spoke English also.

I moved from Botswana to Dunedin in 2010 to study for a Bachelor of Dentistry, leaving my

family behind. My biggest challenge in New Zealand has been getting used to the cold – I am still not used to it.

Since moving to New Zealand I have been able to fly home to visit family in Botswana every couple of years. My family hasn’t been to New Zealand.

I spent five years in Dunedin.

During the first year I stayed in a University Hall where I met friends who I went flatting with over the next four years.

Student holiday jobs have included fruit picking in Central Otago and check out work at a supermarket in Blenheim.

I graduated from Otago University in 2014 with a Bachelor of

Dental Surgery. Once I graduated I started my dental career working in Gore for three years.

I also played netball in Gore and found this to be a good way to meet people. On a less energetic note, I love watching movies.

My fiancé lives in South Canterbury I wanted to be closer to him, so I decided to move to Ashburton.

We are returning home to get married in a full traditional ceremony in December this year and then back to Ashburton were we plan to make our long-term home.

I’m lucky to have met wonderful people that have made me feel welcome.

Regulating rentals is the way to go With one swift decision last week, Housing Minister Phil Twyford made a small, positive step to narrow the oceans separating Kiwi tenants and landlords.

Banning letting fees, the nonrefundable charges imposed by 40-50 per cent of Kiwi property managers, will help regulate a market plagued by a few bad players.

In themselves, letting fees weren’t an inherently evil concept – landlords and property managers could use them to recoup the costs associated with having one tenant move out, and another in, and that was fair dinkum.

But unfortunately they had become the tool of some agencies to pluck wealthier tenants out of the candidate pool and to offload admin burdens onto those typically less wealthy than them,

without actually doing the admin … not fair dinkum.

I had a little brush with the latter practice while visiting a Wellington property management company to rent an apartment in 2016.

My new flatmates and I had been greeted, shuffled into a stark white office to watch a video about why we mustn’t ever lay our mattress directly on the floor, use Blu Tack, nails, tape, pins or Command sticky hooks on the walls, let steam settle on the ceiling, drips fall off the kitchen

bench, or basically ever cough or sneeze or emit any moisture or breath from our own bodies.

We were then called upon to discuss costs and it was a good thing us students had all worked damn hard at our summer jobs to get a foot in the door of the Wellington rental market and our new germ-free, dirt-free lifestyle.

Access to a very humble little Mt Cook apartment cost us, each, right then and there, $1300, comprised of bond, rent in advance and then our $200 divvy of the mysterious letting fee.

We were reassured by a property asset manager that the latter was just part of the “professional service” – covering the cost of property inspections, paperwork and all arrangements, ensuring us a positive experience.

It was just one of those things

we needed to suck up and accept, as it was surely the sign of a halfdecent rental, we figured – basically the dream in Wellington’s competitive market.

But we would later discover that paying it also secured us a distinct lack of anything professional, including a diabolical pile of rubbish in the lounge from previous tenants, endlessly unattended niggles like stuck doors and a broken window – and a seven-month wait to get our bonds back after we left the next year (Tenancy Services ultimately had to return it directly).

Where that $200 letting fee actually went will remain a mystery, but its effects continue to resonate in the form of a very sour taste in my mouth about that flashy property management company and their false

promises.

Letting fees merely marked a learning curve for my flatmates and I – but a much more serious issue for others. In 2011, quake victims in Christchurch had their trust exploited on a much, much bigger scale, when they were asked to repay their letting fees in full simply to renew their lease – and did so, because the rental market had become so competitive.

Some fear that without letting fees, landlords will attempt to recoup costs through rent increases. But overseas, in Scotland, only 2 per cent of landlords increased their rents after letting fees were banned there.

I mightn’t have worn the landlords shoes just yet but it seems banning letting fees is a small but sure step to a healthier market.

In 1999, a French judge closed a two-year inquiry into the car crash that killed Princess Diana, dismissing all charges against nine photographers and a press motorcyclist, and concluding the accident was caused by an inebriated driver.

In 2003, Paul Hill, a former minister who said he murdered an abortion doctor and his bodyguard to save the lives of unborn babies, was executed in Florida by injection, becoming the first person put to death in the United States for anti-

abortion violence.

Ten years ago: Thousands of New Orleans residents who had fled Hurricane Gustav forced the city to reluctantly open its doors, while President George W. Bush returned to the scene to show that the government had turned a corner since its bungled response to Katrina.

Five years ago: Ariel Castro, who’d held three women captive in his Cleveland home for nearly a decade before one escaped and alerted authorities, was found hanged in his prison cell,

a suicide.

One year ago: North Korea carried out its sixth and strongest nuclear test, detonating what it said was a hydrogen bomb.

Small businesses are vital to our economy H

ere in New Zealand 97 per cent of our businesses are small businesses.

A small business is one that has fewer than 20 employees and includes those who are selfemployed but do not employ any other staff.

Small businesses employ around 600,000 people across the country or about 30 per cent of the New Zealand workforce.

In our region, small businesses include construction companies, farms, veterinary practices, real estate firms, shops, restaurants and cafes, hairdressers and beauty salons and the list goes on.

Over the next few weeks I will be visiting small businesses throughout my electorate of Selwyn, including Rakaia, and my colleague Andrew Falloon will be doing the same in his electorate of Rangitata, including Ashburton.

We want to know what the greatest issues affecting our small businesses are.

We want to hear what laws and regulations those in busi-

ness believe need to change to help small businesses grow and thrive.

We also want to hear which current or proposed Government policies are of concern to our small businesses.

Some of the things that we already know are of concern to many businesses include difficulties finding suitably qualified staff.

Businesses have indicated that they are wary that changing immigration settings could make it harder to recruit the staff they need to keep their businesses running.

Business operators have also told us that they are worried about the impact of rising costs on their ability to continue to remain viable.

Many businesses need to either transport goods for sale or have staff driving around in vehicles performing services and rising fuel prices are imposing significant additional costs on these companies. Business owners have two options – either try and absorb these costs which can mean they have to reduce their own incomes (which are often only just covering the bills) or increase costs and risk losing customers.

For businesses that employ staff, proposed changes to our industrial relations framework, including plans to bring in accords that apply across entire industries, are understandably making them nervous.

Similarly, the prospect of rapid rises to the minimum wage and the resultant expectation of across the board increases for other staff presents another challenge for our small businesses that may be operating on tight margins.

Another huge source of frustration that those operating a business often raise with me is

the amount of time and money they find they need to spend on compliance with both local government and central government regulations.

We are inviting small business owners to share their views on these and other topics by completing a survey so that we can use this information to help us develop new policies that will help improve the lot of ordinary New Zealanders.

The last paragraph in the article says it all.

If the politicians say yes they are giving the people of New Zealand the option, doctors, special-

ists and all people the choice. If the politicians say no, then they will have to live with the decision that they have denied everyone from having a choice.

I suspect not many people will take up the offer and I assume

there will be a lot of doctors who will not be a part of shortening someone’s days.

Lastly I do not think politicians should make that choice.

Terrorist motive in attack A 19-year-old Afghan citizen had a “terrorist motive” for allegedly stabbing two Americans at the main train station in Amsterdam, city authorities in the Dutch capital said yesterday.

Amsterdam police shot and wounded the suspect after the stabbings at Central Station. The local government said hours later it appeared the people injured weren’t targeted for a specific reason, but added that investigators had not ruled out terror as an aim or any other possibilities.

After the US ambassador to the Netherlands identified the victims as American tourists, Amsterdam City Hall gave an update.

“Based on the suspect’s first statements, he had a terrorist motive,” the city administration said in a statement that did not elaborate on what the statements were or how they showed intent.

The wounded Americans were recovering in a hospital from what police termed serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Their identities have not been released.

The suspect, who was identified only as Jawed S. in line with privacy rules in the Netherlands, also remained hospitalised.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte confirmed on Twitter that the investigation focused Saturday on exploring the extremist ideas that allegedly inspired the train station attack.

The Netherlands’ counter-terror chief, Dick Schoof, tweeted that the country’s threat level would remain at number four on a scale that tops out at five.

“Sadly, this reprehensible act fits into the current threat assessment,” he said.

The man arrested had a residency permit from Germany. German authorities searched his home and seized data stor-

age devices that would be analysed as part of the investigation, the city government statement said.

He was scheduled to be arraigned during a closed-door hearing with an investigating judge today. Dutch officials did not disclose the charges he could face.

The local government said Saturday it had no immediate plans to beef up security in the city, saying the swift action by police “shows that Amsterdam is prepared for this kind of incident.”

A passerby’s dramatic photo showed two police officers pointing guns at a man in blue jeans and sneakers lying on the ground inside a train station tunnel.

Central Station is a busy entry and exit point for visitors to Amsterdam, with regular trains linking it to the city’s Schiphol Airport. The station is patrolled by armed police and other security staff.

Trump golfs while Washington mourns For President Donald Trump, it was just like any other Saturday.

As political dignitaries gathered in Washington to memorialise Senator John McCain, the president tweeted familiar grievances and headed to the golf course.

McCain’s family had made clear the president was not welcome at the funeral for the six-term senator and decorated war veteran at the Washington National Cathedral. Seated in the pews were three former presidents, a host of lawmakers, and top officials from around the world. Speakers at the service did not mention Trump by name but repeatedly drew contrasts between McCain’s record of service and the divisive politics of the day.

The White House did not answer questions about whether Trump played golf or if he watched the service from afar.

Dressed in a white polo shirt and baseball hat, Trump left the White House in the morning as the late senator’s daughter, Meghan McCain, delivered an emotional address that served as a direct rebuke of Trump and his policies. The tributes still under way, the presidential motorcade whisked him to Trump National Golf Club

Paul McCartney has told of his belief in a “higher” entity – and says he once came face-to-face with God. The Beatles star said the experience – which came after he had taken drugs – had given him the sense that there was something higher.

“I saw God, this amazing towering thing, and I was humbled.” Describing the encounter as a “clue”, rather than a life-changing moment, he added: “It was huge. A massive wall that I couldn’t see the top of, and I was at the bottom. And anybody else would say it’s just the drug, the hallucination, but... we felt we had seen a higher thing.”

The pencil drawing shows the character, created in 1934 as a companion to Mickey Mouse, wearing his trademark sailor hat while the revered animator has signed his name underneath. The identity of the buyer is unknown. Michael Kirk, auction manager at Nate D Sanders, said: “It’s rare to find a Donald Duck illustration hand drawn and signed by Walt Disney himself. “Disney famously delegated almost all animation work to his team of talented animators, making this piece very unique.”

Choir seeking singers

The Mid Canterbury Choir is giving locals the unique opportunity to join them for the preparation and singing of Handel’s Messiah in November.

The group is wanting to hear from anyone who has experience singing the beloved Christmas oratorio and who can attend weekly

rehearsals on Monday evenings from September 17, along with final rehearsals on the evening of September 9, afternoon of September 10 then the final performance on November 11.

“This is an exciting opportunity to work with musical director Martin Setchell, four guest singers, organist and to share with the choir the presentation of Handel’s Messiah,” choir manager Carol Gunn said.

Guest soloists will include Christchurchbased musical director Setchell, Wellingtonbased organist Douglas Mews, Christchurch bassist Malcolm Leitch, and, from Dunedin, soprano Ingrid Fomison-Nurse, mezzo soprano Claire Barton and tenor Ben Madden.

Students in special festival A Festival of Instrumental Music sponsored by the Ashburton Silver Band Charitable Trust and the Ashburton Musical Club was held earlier this month at the Sinclair Centre, arranged by Ted Wood.

Six students entered and all played their chosen instrument with confidence.

Assessor Trudy Foster from Waimate congratulated them all on their performances and presented them all with a monetary award.

The Ashburton Musical Club’s next concert, Spring Tunes, arranged by Carolie Andrew, is coming to the Sinclair Centre this Saturday and visitors are welcome with entry $5 at the door.

Roasted whole leg of lamb

Whole leg of lamb (average weight 2.2–2.5kg) 1-2 tbsp oil rock salt freshly ground black pepper 4-5 sprigs fresh rosemary ■ Take your lamb out of the fridge 30 minutes before cooking to allow it to come to room temperature.

■ Preheat the oven to 170°C. ■ Place a wire rack in a roasting tray, place the lamb on the rack and brush the meat with the oil and then season with the rock salt and freshly ground black pepper.

■ Rub the lamb with the rosemary sprigs leaving them in the roasting dish.

■ Place the meat into the oven and roast at 160°C, allowing 30 minutes per 500g. To test if the meat is cooked, use a skewer to pierce the leg at the thickest

part, going through to the bone.

If the juices are clear, the lamb is cooked.

■ Remove the lamb from the oven, cover the meat with some aluminum foil and then set the

lamb aside to rest, for approximately 15-20 minutes.

■ Carve the meat and serve with vegetables and plenty of gravy.

I based myself in atmospheric Freiburg, the ideal launchpad for a feast of Black Forest excursions, effortlessly accessed by the trusty train tracks.

Frequently associated with the setting of countless Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales, the Black Forest happily plays up to its image as a land of cuckoo clocks, cherry gâteaux, colourful traditional attire, hefty halftimbered farmhouses with incredibly low-slung roofs, and hill upon hill of dark evergreen forest.

I half expected to run into Hansel and Gretel. (If you’re a serious Brothers Grimm aficionado, there’s a designated Fairy Tale route, north of the Schwarzwald, linking many of the towns with literary connections to the Grimms, including their birthplace, Hanau, just east of Frankfurt.)

A short and sweet excursion

from Freiburg is the 50-minute train ride, cutting through storybook Black Forest scenery to Lake Titisee. After ogling the impressive Höllental (Hell Valley) I basked in the spectacle of Titisee’s mirror-like waters, reflecting the dense and calm forest bracketing the lake.

This gorgeous lakefront resort town is just the place to go positively cuckoo in the gift shops, before surrendering to a slice or two of gateaux and perhaps a shot of kirschwasser schnaps.

Another effortless little jaunt by train whisks you to Gutach, home to the Black Forest Open Air Museum. Not only is it a ravishing romp on the rails through the undulating bucolic folds of the Black Forest country, but there is a palpable sense of walking back in time at Vogtsbauernhof Open-Air Museum.

Culture and history comes alive as you get a flavour for traditional farm life, with a clutch of historic structures including the Schwarzwald’s oldest house, the 16th century Vogtsbauernhof.

If you’re up for more cuckoos, head to the German Clock Museum in Furtwangen, housing Germany’s largest clock collection and giving you a crash course in its origins.

The man in the middle

Refereeing rugby has taken Jamie Nutbrown around the world and on Saturday – for the first time – it brought him to Ashburton.

Rugby refereeing is Nutbrown’s full time job.

He is employed by the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) as a professional rugby referee and as part of a directive for all of their professional referees to control both a Heartland Championship match and a Farah Palmer Cup (women’s competition) match this season, Nutbrown was the man in the middle when Mid Canterbury hosted North Otago in Ashburton on Saturday.

It isn’t always the easiest job and one where, if you get something wrong, you certainly heard about it, but Nutbrown loves it.

“I’m pretty lucky really, I get to do something that I love for my job.

“I thought I was pretty lucky as a player to get paid to play rugby, and now to get paid to referee rugby, it’s pretty cool,” Nutbrown said.

A former Super Rugby player who was part of the 2005 Super Rugby winning Crusaders side, rugby had always been a big part of his life.

When injury forced his early retirement in 2013 he started coaching a team in Tauranga and found that he was “quite vocal” on the side-line when it came to referees. That prompted him to pick up a whistle and give it a shot himself.

His first full season of refereeing was 2014. Living back in Canterbury by then, he started with school age rugby and worked his way up from there.

Nutbrown is a rarity.

Not many top players go on to become referees – with Glenn Jackson the other current noteable – and due probably to his playing background, Nutbrown was put on a fast-track.

He was given a coach in Christchurch and the NZRU helped him out with resources, which Nutbrown said probably pushed him through a bit quicker than your average budding referee.

Nutbrown was an electrician by trade before he switched his focus to refereeing.

Now, his job involves training every day, travelling both around the country and the world for games, and reviewing and analysing his performances.

Over a six-month period this year, he was away from home for two months, including a month in France for the under-20 world

Community work for ABs Ahead of their historic Nelson test match, the All Blacks were split into small groups and sent around the country to host events in several different communities.

Mini-teams were sent to events in Drury, New Plymouth, Blenheim, Invercargill and four different areas in Nelson - Brightwater, Richmond, Riwaka and Stoke. All Blacks captain Keiran Read said the players always looked forward to the visits and were a great way to give back to their fans. Saturday night’s test against Argentina at Trafalgar Park in Nelson will be the first held in the province. - NZME

Folau back from injury Israel Folau is set to make a surprise comeback but prop Taniela Tupou is racing the clock after being included in a 31-strong Wallabies squad for The Rugby Championship clashes against South Africa and Argentina. Folau is a chance of overcoming an ankle injury, which sidelined him for Australia’s heavy test loss to the All Blacks in Auckland, and run out against the Springboks in Brisbane on Saturday night. It is a surprise return for Folau who was expected to be sidelined for at least a month.

The biggest downside of the job was the time spent away from his wife and three young children, but fortunately his family was understanding.

There had been many highlights in both his playing days, and now his refereeing days.

The biggest feat of his playing career was that 2005 Super Rugby win, while the game that stuck in his mind the most as a referee was his first Super Rugby game between another of his former sides, the Chiefs, and the Blues in Hamilton.

It wasn’t always the easiest job and around the country unions like Mid Canterbury were struggling to attract referees, and keep them.

Referees often found themselves the focus of comments being called out from the side-line, and Nutbrown said that was potentially what put a lot of people off picking up a whistle.

“You just learn to let it roll off your back. Most of the stuff is pretty minor and when you get into it you’re that focused on the game you don’t actually hear a lot of it,” Nutbrown said.

As a spectator himself, watching his seven-year-old son play, Nutbrown said the only words he called out from the side-line were of encouragement.

But not all parents were the same.

“For me, I’m not too worried about winning and losing, it’s all about the enjoyment for the kids.

“I just encourage all the boys if someone does a good run or a good tackle, I just call out and support them.

“At the end of the day it’s just a game.”

If more spectators took that approach to games, maybe more people would be willing to don a whistle and give refereeing a go too.

Nutbrown said it was a great job and while it was tough to stay on the top once you got there, he was determined to keep getting better.

Referees were scrutinised closely whether it be by the NZRU or SANZAR and had to conduct self-reviews which were then sent away to referees’ panels.

They also had to pass exams on the ever-changing laws of the game and do fitness tests, to keep up with a game that was only getting faster.

“It’s definitely getting a lot

quicker. I think a few of the rule changes have helped that, especially around the tackle and breakdown.

“When I was playing half a forward pack would hit each ruck and there would be a lot less people in the backs. The hits are a lot harder and it’s a lot more defence dominated.”

That meant referees had to be quicker making their decisions, too.

But Nutbrown was glad he was refereeing instead of playing.

“The body definitely doesn’t miss the playing days. Some of the contacts I get to witness between five and 10 metres away, I don’t know how half the players keep getting back up after some of the contacts, and I think we are seeing a lot more concussions now and there’s a lot of priority around head knocks and making sure players are safe.”

While playing was demanding physically, refereeing was demanding mentally. A referee couldn’t switch off for a second.

“You need three or four sets of eyes, really,” Nutbrown said.

With his Heartland game done for the season now, Nutbrown was set to head to Dunedin this weekend for a Farah Palmer Cup game.

Skipper Matiaha Martin scored a late try to delivere Counties Manukau their first win of the Mitre 10 Cup season, beating Hawke’s Bay 29-25 yesterday at McLean Park. Jonah Lowe scored two longrange tries, but a last-ditch trysaving tackle from first-five Tiaan Falcon were all in vain as the early Championship leaders suffered their first defeat of 2018. Martin collected an offload five metres out to score the match-winner with just three minutes left.

Students drug-tested Drug testing of secondary school rugby players will continue at the Top 4 first XV rugby finals series in Palmerston North next weekend.

Drug Free Sport NZ is set to collect random urine samples from the boys and girls competitions, but not the co-ed championship. The aim is to catch those trying to shortcut their way to elite level rather than someone taking medicine to help with asthma.

In brief Bolt not fit enough Both Usain Bolt and his coach Mike Mulvey agree on one thing.

He isn’t fit enough to play in the A-League. But that’s not to say he can’t get there, with two months before the season kick-off. Central Coast gave Bolt 20 minutes of action in a hyped pre-season run on Friday night in Gosford.

The 32-year-old didn’t look out of place but didn’t impress. The eight-times Olympic champion is in the unenviable position of having a microscope over his every move as he tries to adjust to a second sporting career.

Beaten on the buzzer

A converted try on the final whistle saw North Otago come from behind to beat Mid Canterbury 34-33 in round two of rugby’s Heartland Championship in Ashburton on Saturday.

After crossing for the day’s opening try, North Otago led for most of the match, until two quick tries late in the second half put Mid Canterbury in the lead 33-27.

But with time ticking away North Otago had one last shot at the Mid Canterbury defence.

They found a hole to score a try to bring them within one point of the home side and gave first-five Josh Buchan a chance to steal the win by landing the conversion, which he did with relative ease.

Mid Canterbury coach Sean Carter said his players were dejected in the changing rooms following the game, but for him the feeling wasn’t one of disappointment, rather one of frustration.

Carter said his side pushed too many passes in the tackle that weren’t necessarily on.

“They just need to realise that at the end of the day it’s a game of possession and territory,” Carter said.

terbury went out to a big lead but let the opposition back in, and against North Otago it was a different story but with a similar ending.

On Saturday Mid Canterbury had to come from behind to hit the front, but again let the opposition back in, and this time it cost them.

“It was more frustrating than anything to be honest, because we left tries on the park in the first half just through those 50/50 passes,” Carter said.

“

The see-saw battle continued with a try to North Otago’s Inoke Naufahu, followed by an opportunist try to Mid Canterbury’s Seta Koroitamana, and one to North Otago’s Junior Fakatoufifita which had North Otago up 27-21, and that was when the game’s momentum seemed to swing.

North Otago’s Buchan scored the opening try of the game, before Timoci Nabakeke nabbed the first of Mid Canterbury’s five tries after an impressive break from centre Tom Hanham-Carter, with a North Otago penalty putting the visitors up 10-7 at half-time.

North Otago made the perfect start to the second half with a try to veteran Ralph Darling, before

Heywood scored a try in the corner to put his side just one point back, and just a couple of minutes later Fransen followed up that fine effort with an even more impressive one, showing explosive speed in chasing a perfectly weighted Hanham-Carter kick and winning the race to the ball to score his second try of the game, giving his side the lead for the first time in the match, 33-

27, with less than 10 minutes to go.

They just needed to hold on for the last few minutes, but they couldn’t, and while a one-point loss wasn’t the result they were looking for, there was some consolation for Mid Canterbury – two bonus points.

The loss dropped them down to fifth on the leaderboard on points differential, with King Country on top followed by Wanganui and North Otago after two rounds.

In other results on Saturday, Wanganui made it two from two with a 33-21 win over Mid Canterbury’s next opponents, West Coast, as did King Country with a 30-28 win over Buller.

Thames Valley were too good for Wairarapa Bush, winning 44-32, while South Canterbury picked up their first win, beating Poverty Bay 40-11 in Timaru.

In the day’s other game, East Coast ensured they remained at the bottom of the table after two rounds, with a 46-8 loss to Horowhenua-Kapiti.

With West Coast Mid Canterbury’s next opposition there would be plenty to work on this week, but the base was there.

Carter said his side had a mountain of courage and it was just a case of smoothing out the rough edges.

Franklin fit and fresh There aren’t many scarier sights for an AFL defender than a fresh, fit and firing Lance Franklin in full flight. But that’s exactly what the GWS backline is bracing for as the well-rested Sydney superstar ambles to centre half-forward for Saturday’s blockbuster AFL elimination final at the SCG. Come the opening bounce of the sudden-death clash, Franklin will not have played a competitive minute of football in 21 days. In brief Call for cool heads Warriors greats Simon Mannering and Shaun Johnson want their team-mates to retain faith in what has worked this year when they hit the road for the NRL finals. Penrith, St George Illawarra or Brisbane await the Warriors on Australian soil next week, depending on the Broncos’ result against Manly last night. Having beaten all three of those teams in the last seven weeks, the Warriors will be relaxed.

The Kiwi club’s most prolific player Mannering and leading pointscorer Johnson hope it stays that way throughout the build-up. The only members of the current squad who took part in their most recent play-off match – the 2011 grand final loss to Manly – they have had a taste of what is required in the post-season.

Peter Sterling has questioned whether the Sydney Roosters’ demolition of Parramatta will have them primed for the NRL finals. The Roosters ran riot with a 44-10 thrashing of the Eels on Saturday night to grab the minor premiership. Importantly, the Roosters snapped a two-game losing streak to bounce back into the winner’s circle before next week’s qualifying final. “It was a bit of a training run at times,” Sterling said. “They’re going to come up against defences that are going to read their shapes a lot differently to what Parramatta did last night.”

Mid Canterbury A’s Todd Boag puts in a big fend during his side’s dramatic last-minute win over North Otago A at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds on Saturday. The game was the curtain-raiser for the Heartland Championship rugby match between the two unions’ main sides, and just as the main affair did, it also featured a nail-biting finish. The two sides were locked at 34-all about mid-way through the second half until Mid Canterbury hit the lead with a penalty, but then North Otago scored a try to go in front 39-37 with time almost up. A late penalty gave Mid Canterbury a chance to steal it though, and Reuben Early obliged, giving his side the win 40-39. Mid Canterbury’s under-18s also had a last-gasp win over North Otago, 15-13. Mid Canterbury lost the lead with a minute to go, but managed to get back down the other end and kick a penalty to win on the final whistle.

Livamol on the agenda Local galloper Danzdanzdance showed she has come back in fine fettle for her four-year-old campaign with an impressive first-up win on her home track at Ruakaka on the weekend.

The Mastercraftsman mare performed with distinction last season where she finished third in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) before proving highly competitive in two runs in Sydney during the autumn.

Unsighted since finishing sixth in the Gr.1 ATC Oaks (2400m) Danzdanzdance stepped out over 1400m on Saturday where she led throughout to down Contessa Vanessa in a thrilling finish to the rating 82 contest.

Co-trainer Chris Gibbs, who is currently enjoying a brief holiday in the South Island, was delighted by the performance as he considers tackling elite company with his charge at her next start.

“That was really pleasing to see as it was a tough field for her first-up,” he said.

“Contessa Vanessa is a pretty classy customer who has already had a run this time in so to hold her out in a tight finish was a top effort.

“She is a lightly-framed mare who doesn’t carry any extra condition and she was pretty ready to go first-up.

“We know her best runs are generally the second or third in a prep so if she can sneak into the Livamol Classic field at Hastings then I’m keen to take her there without another run.

“She doesn’t cope with wet tracks which means there is no

The multi million dollar stallion wowed harness racing fans when he won his North American debut three weeks ago but one of the horses he conquered that night, McWicked, turned the tables yesterday. After working to the lead in the middle stages Lazarus couldn’t match McWicked’s home stretch sprint and was beaten at the 150m mark before fighting bravely to hold second.

to getting her back to the races and she certainly didn’t disappoint.”

Danzdanzdance currently lies 19th equal with stablemate Hello It’s Me on the order of entry for the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) that will be run at Hastings on 6 October.

Federer wipes Kyrgios

By Darren Walton Roger Federer taunted Nick Kyrgios for his shot-making audacity after delivering a tennis masterclass to send the flashy Australian packing from the the US Open in New York.

The 20-times grand slam champion produced some at-times breathtaking tennis in sweeping past Kyrgios 6-4 6-1 7-5 in their much hyped third-round showdown at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Federer’s emphatic victory set up a last-16 meeting with another Australian, unseeded journeyman John Millman, for a place in the quarter-finals.

Gracious himself in defeat, Kyrgios lamented not converting any of four break-point chances in the seventh game of the opening set, in which he had Federer down love40.

“I take one of those points, the match is wide open,” Kyrgios said.

“He’s not going to play as well as he did towards the end of the first set or into the second set. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out.”

While it was opportunity lost for Kyrgios, Federer raised his game to imperious levels after the reprieve.

At one point, the Swiss marvel played one of the shots of his career, a jaw-dropping around-thenet-post forehand winner that left even his vanquished opponent in awe.

Roger Federer “Oh my god. Yeah, it was unbelievable.

“I’m probably going to place it on Instagram,” Kyrgios said.

But it was Kyrgios’s questionable shot-making that led to Federer subtly twisting the knife afterwards.

The former world No.1 felt Kyrgios paid the price for attempting a low-percentage fancy drop shot at 40-15 while trying to serve for a 6-5 lead in the third set.

When it caught the net, Federer took full advantage, breaking Kyrgios for a fourth time before closing out the match the very next game.

“He should have hit a normal

forehand in the open court and he chooses to go for sort of the drop shot, which at the end cost him the match,” Federer said.

“So clearly when you play that way and you lose, it’s always, like, you feel like he’s so much to blame, but that’s just how he plays.

“But today I think he didn’t come up with the goods when he really had to, and I was good, I think, by making him hit that extra shot.

“Things worked well for me today.”

Kyrgios even imitated Federer’s service motion at one point, which the Swiss was unable to return.

But he said no matter what he tried, Federer had the answers.

“He was too good,” Kyrgios said.

“I thought the first set was key.

“Got to the business end of the first set, crucial moment, played a terrible service game – didn’t make any first serves.

“It was tough. I knew how important that first set was.

“He loosened up straightaway after that. He started playing some shots that we all know he can make.

“All the pressure was off him.

“He’s an unbelievable frontrunner. When he gets in front, there’s not much you can do.”

Meanwhile it’s been a disappointing time for Kiwi doubles players Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak at the US tennis Open in New York. The duo both lost to seeded teams in the second round. - AAP

Vettori reflects on IPL exit Daniel Vettori has accepted the end to his cricket coaching tenure at the Indian Premier League’s Royal Challengers Bangalore with grace.

The former New Zealand captain described the owners’ verdict to the Herald on Sunday as a “pragmatic decision that I fully understand, two years of poor results and time for a change”.

“I was out of contract, also. Five years is a great run for a coach.

Loved my time there.”

Gary Kirsten, the former South Africa and Indian mentor and last season’s RCB batting coach, replaced Vettori on Thursday.

The franchise has not won an IPL title in the tournament’s 11 seasons. They have been runnersup three times, including once under Vettori’s reign in 2016.

However, they finished last of the eight sides in 2017 and sixth this year, meaning Vettori’s future

was certain to come under scrutiny in a ruthless competition.

The RCB roster for 2018 was also perceived as competitive, boasting international talent such as AB de Villiers, Quinton de Kock and Moeen Ali and New Zealanders Brendon McCullum, Tim Southee, Corey Anderson and Colin de Grandhomme.

The franchise finished seventh and third in 2014 and 2015 respectively under Vettori’s watch.

Sources said the 39-year-old had formed an excellent working relationship with RCB and Indian captain Virat Kohli during his five seasons in charge. He had also played for the franchise previously.

In a statement, RCB chairman Sanjeev Churiwala said it had been a great eight-year journey with Vettori.

“We wish him the very best for all future endeavours.”

Kirsten added it was a “privilege” working under Vettori last season.

The RCB decision completes a difficult year on the coaching front for Vettori.

His Middlesex side finished ninth and last in the South Group of England’s Vitality Blast T20 competition, and the Brisbane Heat were seventh of eight teams in Australia’s Big Bash League.
