A Hampstead cat owner has been left upset and concerned after her cat came home this week with what appeared to be a wound from an air rifle.

After being in and out of the house all day on Tuesday, Annette Whyte’s cat Oscar was last seen unharmed at 6pm.

When he returned home at around 8pm, he was bleeding.

“After clipping back the hair and bathing the area in an iodine solution it revealed a perfect hole,” she said.

Unfortunately for Oscar, this has not been his first time as a victim of an air rifle.

He was hit a similar time last year, and Whyte’s other cat Monty had also received two similar injuries on his back.

“No wounds were from other animals,” she said.

“The SPCA have been notified to form a case and another lady had her cat a block over from us turn up with a similar wound a couple of days ago.

“Cats roam but you don’t take to them with pellet guns to remove them from properties or shoot at them for joy.”

A SPCA spokeswoman confirmed they had received a complaint and that the inspectorate team is currently investigating.

Candidates signal intention for increased support for EMC A potential change in the way that Experience Mid Canterbury is currently funded by the Ashburton District Council could be in the pipeline following a robust period of discussion at a Meet the Candidates evening in Methven on Tuesday night.

At the end of the evening’s event in which 10 candidates – four mayoral, three Western Ward and three ECan – addressed a crowd of around 45 residents, questions were thrown from the floor and current EMC board chair, James Urquhart put it bluntly to those in front of him.

“My question is actually a twopart question,” he said.

“The first part is a simple yes or no answer. Do you support tourism in this district and the second part is also a yes or no. If elected will you support more funding for Experience Mid Canterbury?”

Through a show of hands, all those sitting in front of the crowd signalled their support for tourism for the district and the consensus was the same when it came to increased financial support for EMC. All eyes however were focused on the four mayoral candidates Leen Braam, Neil Brown, Donna Favel and Tony Todd for the second part of the question and all four took the opportunity to agree

The three Western Ward candidates; Evan Chisnall, Rodger Letham and Liz McMillan also signalled that they too would also support it if elected.

Urquhart’s line of questioning comes directly from experience through his role with the council-controlled organisation (CCO) and the frustrations he’s felt recently in regards to a lack of support.

“This is an industry which is adding $185 million to the local

economy, that’s not a number plucked from the sky either, it’s a cold, hard fact, he said “But the contribution we are getting from council to sit alongside that economic boost is off the mark.”

EMC is currently funded to the tune of $371,000 a year to operate, but that amount will continue to decrease by $10,000 per year until 2025.

to the closure of the i-SITE building in Ashburton and some initial fears around a potential closure for the Methven location as well, that contentious issue was still clearly evident on the minds of many people who were at the meeting.

“This is a tourist area, it’s important that we have all the options needed available to anyone who comes into our town,” Barrett said.

Urquhart, speaking to the Guardian yesterday, said EMC have been impressed recently with the effort and understanding of council bosses and their staff on the subject and have felt a noticeable shift in understanding.

He added that it was pleasing to see a change in mindset from those at the candidates evening when it came to the support EMC currently gets.

“To hear that first-hand from those that were there was very encouraging and told us that perhaps we are going to be listened to and that there is a better understanding of some of the struggles we are facing.”

A meeting last month between council members and EMC has resulted in a document being prepared currently which will be presented to the new council when they first meet following next week’s local body elections.

Urban-rural divide and water both prominent topics

The apparent divide between urban and rural life in Mid Canterbury and the hot topic of the moment, water, were both prominent topics when a collection of candidates for this year’s local government elections came together in Methven on Tuesday night.

A Meet the Candidates evening, organised by the Methven Community Board, was held in the Mt Hutt War Memorial Hall on Tues-

day evening and the district’s four contenders for the mayoralty, the three candidates for the Western Ward and three ECan candidates took the time to come and speak directly to a crowd of around 45 for the evening.

The night took a light-hearted theme under the guidance of Dame Lynda Topp who played the role of host in one of her most popular characters, Ken. She didn’t hold back on the gentle ribbing of all candidates

throughout the evening, but also brought forward a strong knowledge of the Ashburton District and wasn’t afraid to add her two cents worth to the evening on the important matters.

All 10 candidates were given a three-minute time slot to put their case forward to those who attended before tackling some more pointed questions including the rural and urban divide, challenges for youth in the Ashburton District and the Government’s fresh-

water proposal.

The entire group spoke with passion and enthusiasm across all subjects.

Western Ward candidates Liz McMillan, Evan Chisnall and Rodger Letham all spoke of the importance of having the out-lying areas of the Ashburton District well represented and their desire to become strong advocates for those areas and the district as a whole.

zie, John Sunckell and Sarah Walters all expressed their passion for the environmental impacts facing the district, in particular current issues around water, and spoke with strong knowledge of the subject.

Parents’ centre 30 years old

The Ashburton Parents’ Centre celebrated a special birthday yesterday, its own.

The parents’ centre held birthday celebrations at its Netherby location to mark its 30th birthday.

The centre is a voluntary organisation run by parents for parents and is part of a wider national organisation of 46 centres around New Zealand.

Committee member Claire Smitheram said it was an opportunity to celebrate those who had contributed to the centre over the past 30 years.

Smitheram said there was still an important role for the centre to play in the early childhood world, both through the formal and informal education that is on offer.

“We do have a lot of informal playgroup support that you just can’t get through social media,” she said.

A number of the current committee members include parents whose children have grown up and they have returned to volunteer at the centre.

“It is a credit to the people coming back once their children have grown up,” she said.

“We are working to support local parents.”

Open day’s aim – attract some new recruits

Members of the public will get the opportunity later this month to take a look through the Ashburton Fire Station and find out everything they can about what it takes to be a firefighter.

The open day will be held at the station on October 20 and will run from 11am to 2pm.

Senior firefighter Glenn Sowman said there will be a number of displays for people to look at

as well as live demonstrations from firefighters.

“So we will have a hose run through from both the urban and the rural guys (the two units based at the Ashburton Fire Station), and a rescue gear display where we will cut up a car,” he said.

“They will be running at 11.30, 12.30 and 1.30 and we will also have uniforms, kids’ sizes as well so they can try them on, and we will have a barbecue running as

well and giving stuff away to the kids.”

Sowman said while it was good to open the station to give the public a look through, the main purpose is as a recruitment drive to attract more volunteers to the organisation.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess has said the brigade is in need of more volunteers that are able to attend calls during the day, and that would be a big fo-

cus of the recruitment drive.

The brigade currently has more than 30 members, 14 of whom have served more than 25 years as firefighters.

The Ashburton Fire Station is currently home to two units, the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Ashburton Rural Voluntary Fire Force who combined at the station in 2018 following the formation of Fire and Emergency New Zealand in 2017.

New snow on Mt Hutt as season’s end looms Just over a week out from the official end to the ski season, Mt Hutt staff welcomed a fresh dumping of the white gold yesterday which will see them finish the year on a high.

Wintry conditions blanketed the mountain yesterday morning with 15cm of new snow falling on the slopes before the day cleared in the afternoon, but it’s expected there might be some more before the gate is officially closed.

While it has been known in the past to extend the season, there seems no likelihood of that happening this season with the core group of Mt Hutt employees usually pretty quick to depart Methven and the surrounding area following the official closing date.

After a big season where plenty of work has been required to keep the mountain open and safe, there’s a general sense of feeling that it’s a good time to pull the pin for the season next Sunday, October 13.

A tough middle of the season, in which for more than a month no new snow fell on the mountain, had meant snowmakers were needed to ensure the mountain was able to be used.

Overall though, it’s been a productive season and staff were looking forward to the second official locals day this weekend in which those from the Mid Canterbury region are treated to discount prices for lift passes as well as gear hire.

An earlier locals day in the year raised $3000 which was donated to Kidzmethven and went towards the development of the new skate park which is currently under construction.

The skate park held an open day last Sunday to highlight the work completed thus far and future plans for the site.

Floating into a new world

First of all when I looked at the flotation pod I would be climbing into, I felt a little claustrophobic.

Robyn Wall of Soul Pods had just explained to me all about the flotation experience and how it worked, which should have eased any concerns. But it was straight from a busy work day, and I wasn’t switching into relaxation mode easily.

Soul Pods is located just across the hallway from the Guardian offices on the top floor of Somerset House, so I didn’t have far to walk after accepting Robyn’s invitation to review this new service in Ashburton.

As I was left in the room on my own, the calmness of the space began to have its effect. This was quite a luxurious place to be after all, in a private room with shower cubicle, stocked with nice soaps, shampoos and body creams, and white fluffy towels and a bathrobe. The warmth and pleasant aroma was enveloping, all complemented with relaxing music.

First things first, and that was having a shower and getting completely naked.

The building’s fire siren, which is a whirling noise with an auto-repeating “evacuate the building” voice-over, did not sound at this point. This was the opposite of what my work colleagues had told me would

happen.

This was obviously a good sign, and all seemed well as I climbed into the pod.

Soon I was sinking myself down into its water. To start with, this was an unusual sensation. Instinctively, I expected the water to move like normal water, but due to its high density and balance of Epsom salts, it is instead heavy and holds you up, and turning onto your back you automatically float.

The relaxing music soon faded to leave me with just the sound of my heartbeat and breathing.

It did not take long before I got used to this and found it to be a pleasant experience. I put my head back so it was resting in a flotation ring, and just floated.

Moving a little and swishing the warm water over my skin, the feel of it was like a sliding and gliding, once again, very different to normal water.

After a while I closed the pod

lid, and I could press a button to choose between soft-coloured light or darkness, and I chose the former.

As the sound of my breathing remained forefront, I decided to focus on this – long breaths in, long breaths out, and soon I was transported into a whole new world of relaxation and contentment. The heaviness one feels in their muscles day to day had seemed to dissipate away into the heaviness of the water.

And soon what had seemed to be a very long time for the session at the start – one whole hour – became not long enough.

As the music came back on, signalling the end of the session, I reluctantly had to climb out. It was time to get back in the shower, wash my hair and get dressed again ready to face the world.

The only thing I would do differently next time is wear the ear plugs provided, as while laying back your ears go under the water.

I am writing this the following day after the experience, and have to say that today I feel a lot more relaxed than usual. Perhaps what they say about the magnesium from Epsom salts easing muscle tension and anxiety is true.

All in all it was a wonderful experience, leaving a fantastic feeling of wellness and relaxation, and I would highly recommend it to others to give this new service a go.

Election votes – there’s still some work to do If the Ashburton District is to register a higher percentage of voter turnout for this year’s local government elections, then there’s some work to do inside the final 10 days of voting.

As of Monday, just under 23 per cent of eligible votes had been received, down on the same time at the last election, but not by a whole lot. The figures only relate to those received in relation to the Western, Eastern and Ashburton Wards but there was a significant boost in the numbers on

Tuesday. As of then, 4846 of the total 21,865 registered voters had filed their voting papers officially.

It was a significant 24-hour period however with good numbers of returns across the three wards within the district.

The Ashburton Ward saw close to one thousand votes received on Tuesday, almost double those received in the previous days, while it was almost double in the Eastern Ward.

Local Government New Zealand is urging anyone who hasn’t

received voting papers in the mail to pop into their local council office or contact their local electoral officer to make a special vote.

“If you haven’t received local election voting papers in the mail, don’t worry, there’s still time to make a special vote,” said LGNZ chief executive Malcolm Alexander.

Voting closes at midday on Saturday, October 12.

The Ashburton council has issued several special votes al-

ready, for people whose papers haven’t turned up, and staff have had to remind some people that there will be no polling booth for this election, as they had not realised it was postal voting only.

LGNZ is also urging people to send their postal votes on Vote Day – this Saturday, October 5.

“Voting papers have to arrive at council offices by midday Saturday, October 12, so sending them in on Vote Day gives them plenty of time to get through the postal system,” Alexander said.

Hearing loss warning Teenagers cranking up the music on headphones and other personal devices are being warned that they risk losing their hearing if they do not change their habits urgently.

Results from a new survey carried out by the National Foundation for Deaf & Hard of Hearing found many young people had the volume settings up far too loudly. As a result, their hearing suffered – with 34 per cent of the 479 Year 9 students found to have “abnormal hearing”, meaning that their parents were advised to get them checked by their family doctor.

Homicide inquiry Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was fatally stabbed in Edgecumbe yesterday. Police arrived at the scene on Hydro Road and found a critically hurt 45-year-old man, who died short time later. Police say a 23-year-old man has been charged with assault and that further charges are likely. He is due to appear at Whakatane District Court today.

A St John spokeswoman said one person was taken to Rotorua Hospital with critical injuries. A reporter at the scene said it appeared the crash involved a car and a taxi. The Serious Crash Unit was notified, according to a statement by police.

Many hands make light work The rewards of volunteering are well known and being part of the talented Trott’s Garden team is particularly beneficial, according to those who have rolled up their sleeves and got digging.

For two years now, the volunteers have played an essential part in ensuring that Ashburton locals and visitors alike can continue to enjoy these internationally acclaimed gardens.

“It inspires me to go home and make my own space better,” volunteer Lois Muir said.

The gardens reopened this week for the spring and summer season and volunteers have been hard at work preparing.

The volunteers see themselves as caretakers of Alan Trott’s legacy and love getting out among the birds and the stunning scenery.

They also love the camaraderie and friendships that have developed here – they count themselves lucky to be involved behind the scenes in such a positive community project, to enjoy the laughs and to work alongside like-minded people.

The first two years of the Trott’s Garden Charitable Trust has seen the development of an army of green-fin-

gered volunteers who have become essential to the garden’s operation.

The volunteers make up almost all of the garden’s workforce with the trust only employing a garden supervisor and more recently an administrator/marketing person.

These days, over 80 people volunteer at the gardens, working in the stunning formal gardens and herbaceous borders, keeping the lawns and hedges pristine and organising the catering and meeting and greeting visitors to the garden.

Many of the those who give up their time for this beautiful place do so because they passionately believe that the gardens must not fall into private hands and be lost to the public.

They see themselves as caretakers and are rightfully proud of a garden that is earmarked to become a garden for the community.

The Trott’s Garden Charitable Trust is always looking for more people to become involved and it is a wonderful way to meet new people and give back to your community.

Community trust funds spread far and wide The latest round of funding from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury has seen close to $125,000 in grants approved and spread across 24 organisations from within the region – supporting a wide ranging number of sectors within the community.

A large number of operating grants were provided to a number of groups working to improve health outcomes in the region including Mid Canterbury Riding for the Disabled ($5000), the South Canterbury Multiple Sclerosis Society ($10,000), Par-

kinson’s New Zealand ($10,000), The Stroke Foundation of New Zealand ($3000), CCS Disability Action South Canterbury Inc ($10,000), the RNZ Foundation of the Blind Inc ($2000 digital audio books), the Life Education Trust Mid and South Canterbury ($8500), and the Pinc and Steel Cancer Rehabilitation Trust ($9804).

The community trust is also taking steps to support the region’s economic wellbeing. At the individual level this takes the form of a $10,000 operating grant to the Ashburton Baptist Church.

The church, in partnership with the national office for Christians Against Poverty (CAP) operate the local debt centre, supporting Ashburton families to recover from debt crisis, finding pathways towards financially sustainable futures for themselves and their families.

The trust will also be making targeted support available to individuals and families leaving Gloriavale through a contribution of $10,000 to the Gloriavale Leavers’ Fund set up by the newly constituted Gloriavale Leavers’ Support Trust.

This leaves a very diverse range of grants to a selection of recreational and sporting groups in our wider community in need of a small hand up to continue to provide members with a rich and varied spectrum of opportunities.

Man avoids jail after terrifying sex assaults NZME A Christchurch man who sexually assaulted two women in a dark city cemetery has avoided jail and will serve a sentence of home detention instead.

Richard Manoa Edwards, 28, was sentenced yesterday in the Christchurch District Court for the incident – during which the women thought they would be killed.

He earlier pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting the women on August 12.

Edwards also admitted robbing one of the women of $70 cash.

Judge Stephen O’Driscoll yesterday outlined the offending.

He said the women were working in the red light district of Manchester Street when Edwards and another man approached them in a vehicle.

It was about 3.40am.

Edwards negotiated a price for sexual services and both women got in his car.

The women were taken to a house in the central city and the services were provided.

They then asked the men to drive them back to Manchester Street.

Edwards was in the front passenger seat, and instead of returning the women to where they had been picked up as requested, he pulled a yellow bandanna over the lower half of his face and started demanding his money.

He believed they had stolen cash from him.

The men took the women to a cemetery on Barbadoes Street.

“Your voice and demeanour changed dramatically and you became incredibly hostile,” said Judge Stephen O’Driscoll in court yesterday.

He said one victim was “hysterical and crying” and the other was “too terrified to say anything”.

“Both victims were terrified and thought they were going to die or be seriously assaulted.

Hon Kit Toogood QC yesterday met with the family of Mason Pendrous to discuss the process he will follow as he begins what is expected to be a six-week investigation.

Pendrous was found in his unit at the Sodona Christchurch Campus by a staff member last Monday after fellow students noticed an odour.

The terms of reference of Toogood’s investigation were announced by the university yesterday as it promised the findings would be made public.

“Mr Toogood’s finding will be made public as soon as possible after an exhaustive and thorough investigation,” University Council head Chancellor Sue McCormack said.

“Confidentiality and sensitivity in the process is paramount.

Full support will be offered to those impacted.

“A confidential email account will be set up so that anyone with concerns or information can contact him personally.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey said the uni-

versity would assist fully with the investigation and was doing everything it could to support the work of the police and the Coroner.

“The support of students remains our priority and student care support services are readily available to students, including academic support, counselling, health and wellbeing and financial,” she said.

“Again, on behalf of the Chancellor and myself we extend our deepest sympathies to the family.”

About two-thirds of the university’s on-site students live in accommodation managed by Campus Living Villages (CLV).

The multinational company has more than 45,000 students in its care internationally including at Massey and Victoria universities.

CLV’s Group Managing Director John Schroder welcomed Toogood’s appointment and said it was essential the facts surrounding this event are thoroughly and independently investigated.

Schroder said CLV had given input for the terms of reference for the inquiry and would continue to provide full access to all relevant information and data.

“At the same time, we are conducting our own internal review of systems and processes,” he said.

Summer singing school now in session

If you’re on your way past the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week, keep an ear out for the hard-working vocal chords of 149 Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School (MCSSS) students.

The group launched into a week of practice yesterday before they bring a musical theatre production to the stage on Friday and Saturday.

It’s the biggest production yet for the MCSSS, which has been operating each January for 18 years and is musically helmed

by Ashburton singing tutor Jo Castelow.

“We now have people from all over, from as far as Timaru and Christchurch, and each time brings a new mix of voices,” said Castelow.

Some singers have been involved in the week-long course for more than 10 years, she said,

while more than half of this year’s junior group are newcomers.

The group range in age from 9 to 21 years and includes mem-bers of NAZDA and first-year university students.

This year’s production is themed Time Travellers and will cover musical theatre and tunes from across the ages – from My Fair Lady and Bing Crosby to recent hits like Hamilton and Moana, along with everything in between, Castelow said. “Among the juniors everyone knows the songs from Moana, but they find that they love singing the older ones just as much,” she said.

And not only does the theme provide something for everyone in the audience, she said, but gives the young singers the opportunity to learn about various musicals. The group received their music a month ago, and auditioned for solo positions on Sunday. They are currently undergoing two days of musical

A number of older buildings around the Ashburton District will shortly be sporting signs that spell out how they rank against new building standards.

As part of the on-going drive to ensure all buildings will be earthquake safe, the Ashburton District Council will be sending signs to owners of buildings built prior to 1976 and will be asking them to display those signs prominently on the outside of their property.

The public notification is part of the council’s drive to ensure every older building has been inspected by engineers and that where required, strengthen-

ing work is either carried out or planned in the future.

It’s been a long process getting to this point, council building services manager Michael Wong said, but the placard templates had now arrived and these would be sent to property owners over the next month.

The placards would serve a two fold purpose – making the public aware of a building’s compliance level and encouraging owners to carry out necessary strengthening work.

Wong anticipates there will be about 150 sent out in February to owners of non-compliant buildings.

“These are the building’s we’ve

already assessed. Then we’ll do another desk top review and pick up the ones we may have missed and we’ll work with them,” he said.

Buildings that have not been assessed will be given the lowest rating until an assessment is done, Wong said.

There had been a proposal to change the rules so the cut-off date for engineering assessment would have moved forward to cover all buildings built before 2004 and that would have seen hundreds of buildings around the district bearing stickers, he said.

Te Araroa walkers are on the rise, benefiting the summer tourism industry in Methven.

Many who do the 3000-kilometre trail, which runs the length of New Zealand, end up in the ski town, as it is a natural resting point near the uncrossable Rakaia River.

Methven i-SITE consultant Lyndsay Agnew said December to February was peak season for assisttrail walkers, and she was assist ing about half a dozen per week.

“Most of them are doing the whole trail or the whole South Island, depending on how much THE time they have got,” she said.

“They are really interesting people, you have to be a certain breed to want to go and walk 3000 kilometres.”

They mostly came from Europe and North America, and walked north to south, hitch-hiking into Methven from above Lake Coleridge. They generally stayed in the campground or backpacker lodges in Methven.

“It’s nice to have them here and they spread the word when they go back,” she said.

Walkers rejoin the trail on Blackford Road in the Rakaia Gorge, and Methven Travel provides transport on the “empty” section of its school bus run, and operates an on-demand shuttle service in school holidays.

‘Police trigger-happy’ AP Heads bowed and dressed in black, schoolmates of a teenage demonstrator shot at close range in the chest by a Hong Kong riot officer condemned police tactics and demanded accountability yesterday.

The shooting Tuesday during widespread anti-government demonstrations on China’s National Day marked a fearsome escalation in Hong Kong’s protest violence. The 18-year-old is the first known victim of police gunfire since the protests began in June.

His condition in the hospital was described by the government as stable yesterday.

The officer fired as the protester struck him with a metal rod. His use of lethal weaponry is sure to inflame widespread public anger about police tactics during the crisis, widely condemned as heavy handed.

“The Hong Kong police have gone trigger-happy and nuts,” pro-democracy lawmaker Claudia Mo said yesterday.

Man eating icecream shot dead by neighbour BBC A US former police officer who shot dead her neighbour inside his own apartment in Dallas has been found guilty of murder.

Amber Guyger, 31, argued she killed Botham Jean, 26, after mistakenly thinking she was in her own flat and that he was an intruder.

The verdict comes after a tense seven-day trial in which

Guyger admitted: “I shot an innocent man.” The four-year policewoman is facing a possible life sentence in prison.

Cheers broke out as the verdict was announced. Guyger slumped down at the defence table and wept.

Guyger’s lawyers argued she was distracted by sexually suggestive texts with another police officer and had just completed a nearly 14 hour shift when she made “a series of hor-

rible mistakes” on the night of September 6, 2018.

Prosecutors accused her of bursting into Jean’s apartment “commando-style” and firing at him while he was eating a bowl of ice cream on his sofa.

Assistant District Attorney Jason Fine called her testimony “garbage” and said her actions were “not a mistake”.

During the trial, the Texas Ranger who led the investigation testified it was common for

residents at the complex where both Jean and Guyger lived to accidentally attempt to enter the wrong flat due to the building’s design.

Guyger testified that she found the door unlocked, and noticed it open slightly when she pushed her key into what she thought was her apartment.

The shooting sparked protests as community members feared that Guyger would not be held accountable.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson has hinted that his feud with Vin Diesel is over. The pair allegedly fell out on the set of The Fate of the Furious in 2016, which spilled onto social media, when Dwayne accused “a male co-star” of being a “candy-a**” and claimed that the anger had affected his performance. And since then, the pair have often made comments which allude to a feud between the pair, with Vin once saying things were “blown out of proportion”. But now, it seems they have finally buried the hatchet, as Dwayne has thanked Vin for his “support” in the wake of the release of Hobbs and Shaw, the Fast and Furious spin off that stars Dwayne and Jason Statham.

Not a bad line-up of candidates

M

relationship with the Ashburton District Council really impacted on a lot of people in the room and plenty will have walked away from that meeting thinking that perhaps there is light at the end of the tunnel after all.

Evenings and events like that are the best moments for political grandstanding and you’ll generally get the best indication of what a candidate is all about within the first couple of minutes of them speaking

before the remainder of their conversations morph into one big pledge.

You find yourself feeling a little more skeptical than you’d probably like, but take things on face value and hope that they’re true. We are, of course, dealing with politicians here, so anything is possible.

But Methven’s debate on Tuesday night seemed a little different from the normal.

There was a bit of a sense of urgency in the voices, a desire to be liked and heard and those who were there seemed very receptive to what was being spoken by the candidates.

What I can say is that I was more than impressed with each of them who stepped into the spotlight in Methven on Tues-

day night. They spoke well, were well prepared and knew what direction they wanted their moment to shine to go.

There’s a real sense of passion out there from this group about the betterment of our district and while fully aware that so often campaigns are built on empty promises and the art of saying what might be most likely to get that crucial vote, there was a lot of sincerity in what I heard and observed.

The winner on the night though?

Lynda Topp as her alter ego, Ken. Politics is a serious business and so it should be considering the power that comes with it but she put a light-hearted spin on an otherwise tense situation

and you could see the relaxation come across the faces of the candidates as she gave each one a little gentle sarcastic push.

Her efforts as a comedian are well know.

But this Dame, who calls our little district home, is right at the core of the challenges that are facing our district and her plea to ensure that people get out and vote and make their voice heard at the conclusion of the evening was the standout performance of the evening.

Without doubt.

Imagine how entertaining the council table would be with her sitting around it?

Pure honesty, humour and passion.

I’ve been to a few and I’m yet to attend two that have been exactly the same. They are generally informative and give you a good indication of who should be getting your tick when it comes time to vote.

On Tuesday night I went along to the Methven evening at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall.

I did so as a resident of Methven, but also in an official capacity – just in case there was a John Key show me the money moment that needed to be witnessed.

We nearly had one too.

Jacinda clips Shane’s wings, but should she ground him?

aking Shane Jones some kind of Tsar of Aotearoa, with swag-bag to match, was never a good idea.

Appointing him the Kiwi Santa Claus and supplying him with a bottomless sack of funds, for him to distribute at whim, was always a recipe for added swagger, self-importance and pure blather, a way of life to which Jones has already been attached and accustomed for many years now.

He was the “last man standing” needing to have his already bursting ego further inflated.

An explosion of considerable proportions has been on the cards ever since Jacinda, unwisely, offered him this role, which plays so obviously to his vaulting ambition, his massive over-confidence, and his entirely unrealistic self-assessment of his gifts and capabilities Hence, I suppose, Jacinda’s recent, public, pin-prick deflation of her coalition comrade rather than a wholesale demotion, the consequences of which might endanger anyone within the length of a football field, should the balloon actually go up.

How much pressure will be released via these controlled vents remains to be seen, but the man from the winterless north would do well to take note of them and cut back on his threatening

rhetoric accordingly.

Thus to talk about “Political Utu is a dish best served cold” and, at the same time, make it clear to his forestry “friends” that the best way to assure a substantial chunk from his government money bag is to vote NZ First at next year’s election is, by some way, over the top.

Unsurprisingly, the PM – and, as usual, to her credit – has instructed her bullying minister to take a break and take with him on his holiday the cabinet manual which should show him, perhaps, what is politically acceptable in the constant war of words and what is not.

However, the chances of Jones responding to the dictates of such a volume seem to me remote.

In fact, the aspect of this latest outburst that will really have stuck in the craw of this permanently angry minister is to find himself publicly ticked off by a “mere girl”, even if she does happen to be Prime Minister of

So, go away and think about it, Shane, or you are more than likely to find yourself on the outer with no longer your sack at your side from which to dispense vote-catching charity to your chosen chums. What a comedown that would be. You would have difficulty looking Winston in the eye.

Not that Winston has emerged unscathed from his latest spell as “Acting” PM; when bearded by the endlessly inquisitive media, he has been predictably surly and unwilling to engage in polite conversation. I don’t think Jacinda has ever grasped the fact that with her so often out of the country things back home invariably slide into unattractive mediocrity.

Simon Bridges may have been out of line when calling Ardern a “part-time” Prime Minister but recent events seem to have made that remark more relevant than when the under-siege, Leader of her Majesty’s Opposition first coined it.

Such considerations become more significant with every day that passes and Election 2020 hoves into view.

Meanwhile, across the Pacific Ocean, one would like to feel confident the noose is, at last, actually tightening around the neck of that “pathological liar”

and boorish bigot, Donald J Trump.

His potentially treasonous phone call to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he seemed to be suggesting generous America military aid in return for “dirt-digging” on Father and Son Biden – the same skullduggery he employed to find fault with Hilary Clinton pre the last election – has caused predictable contempt, shared, even, by some Republicans. The knives of impeachment are, thus, out.

This latest flouting of the constitution – at which, at his inauguration, Trump promised, “faithfully” to support – may turn out to be one too far – one would certainly hope so – but as he has already got away with a slew of such egregious “misdemeanours” – the official description of such failings – depressingly, one still cannot be certain that this time his goose is thoroughly cooked.

It is vital Trump not be re-elected in approximately 12 months’ time.

Regenerative farming could be a useful tool for farmers wanting to enhance their land, says regenerative farming proponent John King.

King put his case to members of the Ashburton Water Zone Committee recently, where it received a mixed response.

Regenerative farming substitutes ecological principles and resources for inputs and uses the self-organising ability of organisms to solve problems. It advocates limited soil disturbance, covered soils, diversity of plants, living root in the soil and integration of livestock.

There was no exact recipe, King said, and farmers around the world were reporting good profits even if they were not the most productive.

“It is about bringing ecology to farming and making it practical.”

Regenerative farming techniques were also better able to cope with weather extremes like drought and flood, King said.

He said New Zealand farmers could learn a lot from Australia, where drought was an issue.

Zone committee member John Waugh disagreed, saying Kiwis were way ahead of their neighbours when it came to water management.

“I am a hydrologist and if you look at the way the rivers are managed in Australia, they have completely stuffed up the Darling and there is a serious risk of stuffing up the Murray.

“We have nothing to learn from Australia in terms of water management. We do a

much better job of it in this country.”

Long-time Mid Canterbury farmer and zone committe member Stuart Wilson said farmers were not ignorant about the ecology and already worked with the soils they had.

There was still a case for cultivation and the addition of nutrients to improve some soils so they could actually grow pasture and crops.

He said farmers were continually observing their operations and responding, depending on the climate, and the state of

their soil, crops and livestock.

King said soil had great potential to sequester carbon and the committee encouraged him to make that point to Government, which is setting rules about climate change.

Farmers cannot currently offset their greenhouse gas emissions against carbon in their soils, crops, pasture and trees.

King recommended two books to those interested in knowing more: Dirt to Soil by Gabe Brown, and Call of the Reed Warbler

by Charles Massy.

O’Connor: Farmers have nothing to fear NZME Damien O’Connor says concerns over the Government’s Essential Freshwater proposals have been “whipped up into a bit of a frenzy”, and most farmers have nothing to fear.

In fact, the Minister for Agriculture told The Country’s Jamie Mackay that all New Zealand farmers will gain from the proposals.

“A 100 per cent will benefit ... they will benefit from underpinning what is our international reputation for ethical production of the best food in the world.”

Despite this positive outlook, O’Connor admitted there had been “some pretty good blunt discussions” at the water reform meetings he attended recently.

While the minister said he appreciated the rural sector’s concerns at these meetings, he put the “robust” atmosphere down to misinformation.

“There’s been implications by Feds and the National Party that the plans that we’re proposing are going to affect every single farmer and cause huge costs.

“The reality is that the vast majority of farmers around this country have been

doing what we’re proposing ... this has all been going on for 10 years since Fonterra launched the Clean Streams Accord.”

Mackay queried why David Parker, the “architect” of the proposals, had not attended meetings to talk to farmers about “the biggest change you’re looking to force upon farming since the 1980s”.

O’Connor said Parker could not “physically get around to all the meetings” and dismissed Mackay’s statement as not only “absolute rubbish”, but the kind of rhetoric that caused farmers to worry.

“It’s not the biggest change. This is why farmers are concerned. For the vast majority of them it won’t be any change at all – because they’ve been getting on and doing it.”

Right now uncertainty over the discussion document was putting pressure on the rural sector, O’Connor said, but ultimately the water reforms would benefit Kiwi farmers internationally.

“If we make sure that we don’t have messages and stories of water degradation around the world, we will maintain the premium in the market place.

“That’s an advantage for every single farmer in our country and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

What the Govt doesn’t want you to know E

ach summer my family swim in water-holes along the verges of the Taylors Stream and south branch of the Ashburton River which runs adjacent to our farm, just as I swam in rivers in south Auckland at their age and that is something we sure want to have as a childhood memory for the next generation.

Every year, I marvel at the thousands of families who enjoy swimming, water skiing, playing in Lake Hood; swimming of course in water fed from the river.

I also reflect on the leadership, tenacity, vision and sheer bloody mindedness of the group of people who tirelessly fought to bring the Lake Hood dream to reality in the face of vitriolic public opposition. The district owes them a huge debt of gratitude.

But I also reflect on the standard of houses that have been built, the income levels that exist now in this district to afford such homes and the employment opportunities that this district now provides for its professionals.

All of this is a far cry from Mid Canterbury in 1994, the year we moved to this district. Mid Canterbury was still struggling to recover from the 1980s economic collapse, droughts and snow storms. A rural town like so many others down on its luck, a place that exported its bright young people to opportunities elsewhere.

Now it is a place that offers a wide variety of career options to our young people and all those across our society, with near full employment and a district with fantastic social and recreational facilities. I would contend that much of that economic transformation is on the back of agriculture and irrigation development.

But with that comes adverse impact and that is why we as farmers are on a journey of reducing the environmental footprint of agriculture. The National Policy Statement for Freshwater imposed by the previous National Government requires all waterways to be “maintained or improved” and via the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan implemented by the commissioners at Environment

Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers president, David Clark offers his thoughts on the current hot topic of the Proposed Action Plan for Healthy Rivers in next week’s Guardian Farming.

Today we share it with Ashburton Guardian readers.

Canterbury, we now have a strict set of reduction targets, focused to each catchment that we must meet.

These targets are tough and will take a lot of effort to attain, requiring changes to farm systems, intense monitoring and novel solutions such as Managed Aquifer Recharge.

Farmers are engaged in the process and committed to meeting the goals.

But now we are at a fork in the road. The Proposed Action Plan for Healthy Rivers currently being consulted on has the potential to pull the economic mat out from under this district and will replace tough, hard to achieve targets with bottom lines that we have no hope of ever achieving, as an industry or as a district.

So, what does the proposal say for this district? ​The proposal sets out new regulations for stream fences, stock exclusion, phosphorous and sediment loss which will impact farming systems, particularly hill country and requirements for a resource consent for any area of winter grazing crops over five per cent of the farm area or 30 hectares.

But for this district, the game changer is a national policy statement bottom line of 1mg/litre of dissolved inorganic nitrogen.

Currently the targets we are working towards are an aquifer drinking water standard of

6.9mg/l. Not entirely apples with apples, but still a massive shift of the goal posts.

To achieve such a bottom line, Section 5.8, page 49 of the Action for Healthy Waterways summary has a map entitled “indication of impact of proposed new nutrient bottom lines”.

The indicative nitrogen reduction beyond the current NPS-FM is between 50-80 per cent for this district.

Section 10.2, page 88 states: “this would require significant land management changes in some areas”.

No direct referencing to Mid Canterbury is included; however, impact is noted in the Selwyn Te Waihora catchment with an estimated scale of benefit or problem noted as: “an estimated 76 per cent reduction in nitrogen and a 50 per cent reduction in phosphorous loads would be required to meet NPS-FM bottom line objectives for Te Waihora.”

Section 10, Impact of Proposals makes a footnote of a report prepared for Environment Canterbury in 2017 looking at the impact of an 80 per cent reduction in nitrogen loss in the Selwyn Te Waihora zone.

Broadly, that report found that land use change would be severe, resulting in a cluster of dairying along the coastal strip, dryland sheep farming on the mid plains and the Malvern Hills planted

in trees or used for extensive grazing and was dismissed by that community as an acceptable option.

Thus far, the Government have refused to provide any economic modelling of the impact of their proposals and I understand that the advisory panel were specifically instructed to ignore any economic considerations from the proposal.

So, in the absence of information from Government, one can only look to extrapolate the Selwyn Te Waihora model out across this district. So broadly speaking, changing this district back to a cluster of dairy farms along the coast, breeding ewes on the plains and merino wethers in the foothills would in my mind constitute an end to farming as we know it today.

But it seems this Government doesn’t want you to know that.

Environment Minister David Parker is on record as saying some people were wound up by Federated Farmers’ claims that the freshwater reforms could signal the end of pastoral farming.

“It’s not surprising that those incendiary comments had some people worried, but discussions have been polite,” he said. “It’s just not correct. Federated Farmers are wrong.”

I’m simply quoting from the report released for consultation by the Ministry for the Environment.

I’ll let you decide who is wrong.

My view is that it is time for Minister Parker to publicly front up with sound economic impact assessments, so that our communities understand what this proposal will mean. ​Here is an example of where this whole proposal gets ridiculous.

There is a farm in this district, a good example of many, very well run, with wetlands and waterways fenced, low to moderate intensity, in the foothills.

Under this proposal, their fences need to be torn down and moved back three metres, they need a resource consent for the turnips for the ewes and they must reduce the intensity of the farm system by reducing calculated nitrogen loss by 50-80 per cent to help achieve a dissolved inorganic nitrogen level of 1mg/l in the lowland streams of this district.

The problem is that they have a creek running into the farm fed from a spring over the boundary fence in the Department of Conservation estate. There is no agricultural activity in the catchment above the farm whatsoever.

The spring fed creek, at the boundary, has a dissolved inorganic nitrogen reading of 3mg/l.

What the Government is proposing is expecting farmers to achieve a water quality outcome that is in many cases better than nature.

Skeptics challenge ‘spirit surgeons’ A group aiming to stop a national tour by a New Zealand-based “psychic” is challenging the ethics of the host venues.

The New Zealand Skeptics group has emailed all the venues booked for the tour of spiritual medium Jeanette Wilson, in a bid to shut it down.

New Zealand Skeptics’ chair Craig Shearer told Morning Report the tour was “dangerous” because Wilson was claiming to heal people of illnesses, by talking to spirit surgeons.

“You often have psychics touring the country doing entertainment-style shows, and they’re doing things we call ‘cold reading’ where they’re sort of attempting to ... pretending to contact dead people.

“Unfortunately, it’s for entertainment and unfortunately there are people in the audience who have lost loved ones, they are grieving and we think that’s pretty sad.”

Shearer said the series planned by Wilson was at a different level, as she was claiming to be able to talk with “spirit surgeons on the other side”, and heal people of illnesses they have.

“We think that’s pretty dangerous

as it seems there’s no evidence she can actually do this, so we would really like to shut this down.”

He said people with serious illnesses might put stock on her healing rather than visiting a qualified doctor.

“There’s also financial harm through people having to pay money to have this sort of ... thing done to them.”

Shearer said it was fair enough that people who wanted to pay to attend such events, should be free to do so, but society should be protecting vulnerable people from the mental and financial harm that might arise from them attending these events.

The group had emailed all venues hosting the tour, but so far no city councils or venues had pledged to take any action to stop the show.

Shearer said only one had responded so far, to say it had no control over what was booked.

“My response to that would be, they really need to look at their ethics, and ask if it’s really ethical to promote this sort of behaviour at their venues where people are actually going to be harmed.

Wilson, who has been working as a spiritual healer for 25 years, runs events, workshops and consultations around New Zealand and in the UK. Shearer said the skeptics’ sister organisation in the UK ran a similar campaign to have her tours shut down there.

“They contacted all the venues there and they managed to get quite a few venues to pull out of the tour.

“That’s what we are hoping will happen here as well.”

Wilson is about to embark on a nationwide tour of New Zealand conducting psychic surgeries and workshops.

Tickets range from $40 for a twohour show where a team of spirit world doctors and surgeons claim to remove pain and restriction, “often within just minutes”, to $350 for a weekend workshop in Invercargill, which aims to train others to become healers.

acebook has followed in Instagram’s footsteps by trialling hidden like counts on posts.

From Friday, some Australian users can no longer see the number of likes or reactions on posts by people or Pages. This is a trial, and is only in Australia at the moment, but Kiwi businesses should take note.

Instagram (also owned by Facebook) has been hiding like counts on posts in several countries since July, including New Zealand. No data from this trial has been made available yet, but the fact that it’s being trialled on Facebook can be taken as an indication that it has been positive for the platform.

Facebook said removing likes from view is an attempt to reduce social pressure among users, which is a noble motivation, but one that many business owners believe is a guise to make them cough up more advertising dollars.

The common theme of comments (ironically, on Facebook) around this move indicate that many business owners believe this is “just one more way for Facebook to turn the tap off for businesses and rinse more dollars out of us”.

In my opinion, the only business that has anything to fear about the hiding of Likes are those who are obsessed with the wrong metrics in the first place.

The hiding of Likes helps brands to refocus their campaign measurement away from ‘vanity’ metrics like Likes, and towards more important business objectives like conversions, leads, or sales.

You could also end up saving a

lot of time, effort, and money by not having to create the kind of ‘like-bait’ content that does you no benefit in the long run.

Being less obsessed with Likes is good news for brand authenticity too – if you aren’t concerned about the popularity contest of the Like count on a post, you’re more likely to share content that you truly believe in and represents your brand more honestly.

When nobody knows if your post got just a handful of likes, or thousands of likes, you’re less likely to hold back or airbrush the truth.

While Facebook indicates that the number of Likes a post receives is still an algorithmic factor in how much organic reach the post will get, for most small businesses organic reach is fickle anyway, and there are so many other factors that influence the reach of a post that Likes aren’t the be-all and end-all.

As a business, you should be paying to reach the right audience through relevant platforms and

not relying on the trickle of free eyeballs on your content as your sole means of growth.

Across the many Instagram accounts I consult on, the hidden Like count trial over the past couple of months has had very little impact from a business perspective.

A small number of accounts saw engagement dip, while others actually increased – anecdotally, some people are more inclined to give a like on a post when they know their friends won’t necessarily see that they’ve done so.

As both a user and a marketer on these platforms, I welcome the hiding of Likes. It makes our experience that much more authentic and delivers what is ultimately a beneficial place to play. This is the future of social media, best get used to it.

Altrusa International of Ashburton Altrusans have been busy in many ways, as usual. Our six-weekly Foot Clinic in August was attended by 27 clients. Last month we enjoyed listening to Celeste Bennett, from the Ashburton Library.

She spoke about the culture shock coming to New Zealand. Celeste chooses the Library books that go in the “Books On Wheels” monthly packs which we deliver to people in the community who are no longer able to visit the library. Members recently visited the Ashburton Fire Museum before sharing a meal at the Stables.

Material that was donated to our Fabric Bazaar has been put to good use, as we made 93 curtains to give to St Vincent de Paul and Presbyterian Support Services. The Burmese Migrant Workers Education Committee has received rent for another year. The Service Committee, along with the Girl Guides, have made 57 small sewing bags and 36 pin cushions for the “Threads Across the Pacific” project.

Donations have been made to the following organisations: Life Education Trust (The Harold Club); Ashburton Benevolent Trust; Seabrook McKenzie Trust; Dementia Canterbury; Age Concern; Ashburton Fire Museum.

Our guest speaker at our September meeting, Alison McGregor, told us about her work as the Literacy Aotearoa Tutor Co-ordinator for the Ashburton area.

Altrusa also held our usual Boulevard Day Cake Stall, where the Spring Garden Raffle was drawn. We hold a Business meeting on the first Wednesday of the month, while on the third Wednesday we have a meal meeting following which we usually have a Guest Speaker. As a service club, we continue to provide service to the Ashburton community.

Ashburton Woodworkers Fifteen members were welcomed by Bruce Ferriman, he then introduced our demonstrator Peter Clemett, from the Christchurch Club, who is also the South Island liaison officer for the National Association of Woodworkers or known as NAW. Peter urged club members to join NAW and the advantages of belonging, even standing for committee.

Members then enjoyed a quiz night with challenging questions covering Lions knowledge, Ashburton knowledge and general knowledge. This was a fun event with lots of competitive rivalry between tables.

Business for the night included the final organisation for the coming accessory sale to be held from Thursday October 17 to Saturday October 19 in the old Caroline Eve shop. Members are busy collecting scarves, jewellery, hats, shoes, bags and other home accessories. The club also organised volunteers to help with the Blind Foundation’s collection on October 19. Details were also discussed for the final major event for the year Toot for Tucker to be held on November 18.

The meeting concluded with some friendly tail twisting and drawing of the raffle.

Ashburton Dahlia Circle A new season for the Dahlia Circle opened on Tuesday September 17.

President Brian Glassey chaired the meeting, with a lower number present than usual, so business was brisk and then onto enjoy our evening of flowers.

He sketched a candlestick design on graph paper to a desired size, then transferred the various sizes onto a template marking notches to where the various shape, curves, change.

Ashburton Golf Club What a cracking Finals day we had on Sunday, a gorgeous sunny day, the course was in stunning shape, and none of the finalists slept in, though a few might have wished they had. At the end of the day when the dust had settled we had all our champions.

The 2019 Ladies 9 hole champ is Val Ferrier, Bronze 2 is Jenny Williams, Bronze 1 is Shirley Elliot and Silver Champion is Pauline Bell, who now seems to have a standing order at the engravers. The men’s 9 hole champ is Sam Prince, Junior B Greg Fleming, Junior A Jeff Williamson, Intermediate is Sean Strange and the Senior champ for 2019 is Jeff Hewitt. Last Saturday we had the annual Captain versus President match play games, some great games were played and it seems that Captain Bruce must have offered better incentives as his team just pipped Murray’s team to pick up the trophy. The pennants challenge running alongside these games was also played, but I can’t, for the life of me, remember the result. Maybe its post-traumatic stress.

This Saturday we have round one of the DCL cup, this is the first of 3 stroke rounds all 3 nett scores to count. They are also the last 3 rounds of RMF Cup qualifying. After the third round on October 19 the cut is made for the top 30 final series. More on that next week.

Last of all, on Sunday we have our Open Day starting at 2.30pm, everyone welcome, especially non-members, come on down for a look around the club, check out the course and the driving range, have a hit, get tips from our wonderful Pro Matt and finish with a barbeque social time, all free of charge. Put the word around, invite friends and family, should be a great day. Good golfing.

Ashburton Photographic Society September has seen members visiting the beautiful garden and treasurers at Coniston for our field trip. These photographs will be coming through in next year’s competitions, because all this year’s competitions are now closed. It seems very early but because we need to have all the Honours and Acceptances judged again.

Friday September 27 Cavendish Club members held their annual Fashion Parade.

Hinds Merino Shop supplied a lovely selection of garments some of the members modelled. They wore a selection from sportswear to outfits for special occasions. A most enjoyable afternoon thanks to Carol and Jenny. The afternoon finished with a delightful afternoon tea catered by Sandi.

Garden Circle - The Garden Circle of the Cavendish Club was held on Friday September 13. This was our best display of flowers for many years and members excelled themselves with their exhibits in both the cut flower and daffodil sections.

Our judges Pat Tarbotton and Graham Gunn both stated the entries in the daffodil and camellia sections were very even and made judging more difficult.

He also told us of his love of breeding rare poultry breeds and had a beautiful well behaved chicken with him on display. This was a most entertaining afternoon and a delicious afternoon teas was served.

Library - Describing herself as a bookworm since the sage of seven, our speaker Norma Geddes spoke of her ongoing love of books and reading even to the extent of having several books on the go at any one time – some for reading indoors while others more likely to be read outdoors.

She emphasised the power, the wonder and the beauty of words and the importance of each of us telling our story.

Norma brought with her a wide ranging selection of books by local authors, telling Mid Canterbury’s story, and also a selection of newly published books by well-known authors e.g. Geoffrey Archer, Wilbur Smith, Margaret Atwood, Lucinda Riley – all sure to be popular at Christmas.

After answering questions about e-books, self-publishing, ordering and working in a bookshop (where she is still excited by the look, the feel, the smell and the promise of new publications).

Norma was thanked by Janet and applause from members.

Mid Canterbury Choir The choir will be presenting Messiah on Sunday April 5, 2020 – a new time of year for us but prior to Easter was always the traditional time Messiah would be sung.

We are inviting members of the public to join us to sing this masterful work.

You need to be very familiar with the music, as the short two-month lead in of rehearsals is not time for singers to learn this piece from scratch. Rehearsals are a full day on Saturday February 22 and Saturday March 28, with Monday evening rehearsals between those dates.

MSA Outdoor Bowling Club With the season now in full swing our green has been a hive of activities. We have hosted our first Skip 2 It Flooring Xtra sponsored Half Day Triples which saw a full green of 16 teams participate on a very good green. Thanks to a very busy green keeper Tony Inwood. This tournament was taken out by an Allenton team skipped by David Hickman with minor prizes to Ashburton Club teams skipped by John Smart and Murray Anderson.

Sunday September 22 saw our green full again with our annual Peters Cup Tournament sponsored

by Barry and his team at Patersons Funeral Services, all games were played in good spirits with 7 teams having 3 wins with Methven’s Craig Carter’s team taking home the trophy, Linton Muir’s team runners up and Brent Mayson’s team in third place.

A very enjoyable day had by all.

Our low key club days have commenced Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with drawn teams playing for the Watties Trophy on a Thursday at 1.30pm with the first week’s winners Brian Lynn and Ray Mitchell. Members are urged to support these days. Entries now closed for championship competitions, so get up to Racecourse Road and check out the notice board. Any person wishing to give bowls a go most welcome

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday September 26. We met in the Doris Linton Lounge. Apologies were received with Hope McIntosh playing piano, we sang the R.S.A. song.

Also happy birthday to those celebrating in September. Sympathy was given to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one. Sick members were wished well and hope for better health. Members were thanked for the successful cake stall last month.

Catherine and Claire cut the cake. Speaker John Tull was introduced. He and his wife went on a four week trip to Scotland in July/August. Having lived there John could tell of salmon fishing, whisky and barrel making with knowledge. Photos of old houses and castle ruins were fascinating.

Photos of Dubai, on the way home, showed such a contrast. John was thanked for coming to talk to us and donating Scottish shortbread for afternoon tea. Raffles were won by Wendy Marr and Hope McIntosh.

Ashburton District Neighbourhood Support Chairperson Veronica Rabbitt presided over the September meeting of the Ashburton District Neighbourhood Support held recently. The Annual General Meeting is planned for October 24, 2pm at the Seniors Centre, Cameron Street.

There will be a guest speaker. The Gets Ready join ups are progressing, but some education and promotion are needed. Boulevard Day was successful, with the fine weather assisting. Town Watch helped with selling the raffle. Plans are in hand for the stand at the Safety Village at the A&P show.

Run and Walk Ashburton Our walkers have experienced great variety these past two weeks being hosted from members’ homes.

Saturday September 28 a group of 12 gathered at the Stratfords home on Morris Road. A cool wind, but otherwise a fine spring day, accompanied walkers as they wound their way onto Company Road, round the reserve of the Industrial area, Bremners and Glassworks Road through to Seafield Road and back up Morris Road.

A good pace was set with everyone keeping mostly together for 8km. Afternoon tea was ready on our return and enjoyed by all. The Early Birds had a group of six runners who met at 7.30am and set a quick pace down and back along the River Track,

clocking up 10km before retiring to Columbus for a coffee.

Saturday September 21, the walkers were hosted from Harland Street, Tinwald. Again 12 members gathered and made the most of a very warm sunny day with no wind.

They walked down Grahams Road, up the River Track, over onto Tarbottons Road to Lagmhor Road before returning to base, with some choosing a shorter route returning via Archibald Street. Our runners had a team entered in the annual Takahe to Akaroa Relay Race. In its 79th year and beginning at the Sign of the Takahe in Cashmere and finishing 6 hours: 29:23 later at the Akaroa Domain. Always a great day out and this year the weather was superb, getting warmer with each lap.

Three new members took part with each thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Results were: Lap 1 Takahe to Allandale, 9.6km – Alison Conway 54:18; Lap 2 Allandale to Gebbies Valley, 10.4km – Grace Forde 50:47; Lap 3 Gebbies Valley to Ataahua Domain, 10 km – Gabby Simpson 50:13; Lap 4 Ataahua Domain to Lake Forsyth, 9.4km – Ian Broadbelt 44:48; Lap 5 Lake Forsyth to Cooptown, 10.7km – Ashlea Mulligan 47:51; Lap 6 Cooptown to Hilltop, 6.8km - Graeme Wall 45:33; Lap 7 Hilltop to Duvauchelle, 9.5km – Gary Whiting 43:07; Lap 8 Duvauchelle to Akaroa Domain, 9.9km – Steve Carr 52:46.

One more highlight on the calendar before the season finishes is the Greymouth Relays on October 12 - good luck to our teams competing.

When David Pocock retires from international rugby at the end of the Rugby World Cup, many people may look back on who the flanker’s greatest adversary was, and the answer will likely be Richie McCaw. The two opensides faced off on a number of occasions, most noticeably in the 2011 RWC semi-final and the 2015 final, with the All Black usually getting the better of his counterpart.

However, a stat has been released to show how Pocock not only has beaten McCaw in Rugby World Cup turnovers, but is the over-

Seeing as this is only the Australian’s third RWC, it means that he averages 15 turnovers a tournament with his 30. Meanwhile, McCaw competed in four RWCs to earn his 25 in second.

What is perhaps even more remarkable is that Springboks great Joost van der Westhuizen sits in third on the list, with the rest of the top five being flankers. The scrumhalf is ahead of Josh Kronfeld and Sam Warburton on the list.

But in the battle of the breakdown maestros, Pocock has come out on top in this one.

This is an area of the game where the former Brumbies loose forward has made his name over the past decade, but it is surprising how far ahead he is of McCaw, particularly with more games to play over the next few weeks.

Of course, this is only one facet of the game, and there were many more strings to McCaw’s bow, which is why he is revered as one of the greats, if not the greatest player to play. His 27 international tries and three world player of the year awards are no greater example as to why. But in the titanic battle between the two nemeses, Pocock has won the turnover contest at RWCs.

Rural schools well represented in Canty team

It’s known by some as the hardest Canterbury team to get into, because every child in the region has the opportunity to get into it.

So the fact that the Canterbury primary schools’ team for this year’s inter-regional cross-country race held in Hanmer Springs last week included six young Mid Cantabrians was a pretty big deal.

The inter-regional race pitted teams of Year 5-8 aged runners from Canterbury, Wellington, Tasman and South Canterbury against each other. For the Year

5 and 6 kids, the race was 2.4km, and for Years 7 and 8 it was 3.4km.

Dorie School’s Ollie Jackways won the Year 6 boys’ race and also won gold as part of the Canterbury A team.

Methven Primary School’s Elliot Markillie was fourth, but the first Canterbury runner home in the Year 5 boys’ race, while Hinds School’s Sophie Lampe was fourth overall, and the third Canterbury runner home for the Year 5 girls, and Blaise France from Mount Somers Springburn School was seventh overall and the fourth Canterbury girl home.

They also won gold as part of the Canterbury A team.

Amelia Chisholm was 24th for Year 6 girls, while in the Year 5 girls’ race another Mount Somers Springburn student – Sylvie France – ran as an independent and placed 19th.

Jackways and Markillie were also both part of the regional 1km relay team which won the Dave Dixon relay baton, while overall Canterbury won the Phil Costley Shield.

They’d only won the shield once before, since 2013, and that was in 2016.

The Canterbury team was se-

lected from the Canterbury cross country race in June and was made up of runners who placed in the top 10.

Students from 46 different schools across the region were selected for the Canterbury team, including from Grey Main on the West Coast, up to Cheviot in the north, across to Tai Tapu and Methven, and going down as far south as Hinds.

So for the students from the small, rural Mid Canterbury Schools to make the cut, from more than 200 schools in Canterbury schools was an exceptional effort.

Tough gig for halfback Weber NZME Halfback Brad Weber has “one of the toughest jobs” at the All Blacks during their World Cup campaign in Japan – the all-important team music DJ. Weber has had to be patient over the years, having an up-anddown career at the top flight with the All Blacks and the Chiefs, and is now the understudy of two of the greatest New Zealand halfbacks of the modern era in Aaron Smith and TJ Perenara.

But the two-cap No 9 has bided his time with the All Blacks, and after one of his best seasons in Super Rugby, looks set to feature off the bench against Canada tonight at the sport’s biggest stage.

In the meantime, he has been thriving on another stage – pumping up the dressing

room and keeping spirits up during long team trips with his wide-ranging and eclectic music tastes.

“Being on the music committee is one of the toughest jobs you can have in a sports team with a squad this size,” Weber told Radio Sport.

“The diverse range of musical taste is quite difficult to please everybody. But I’m lucky I’m a big fan of music – all types. My playlist has everything from hip hop to rock to a little bit of drum and bass and house, and old school classical stuff. So I appeal to everybody I think.”

The 28-year-old Weber, as inventive and clever with the aux cord as he is at the back of the scrum, says he’s got “a few things up his sleeve” when it comes to music.

“Everyone has a little bit of everything in there and the boys seem to be enjoying it so far. [I’ve] brought a few innovative things in. Had a collaborative playlist on Spotify sorted where anyone can add to it, and that’s been a real hit with the boys. Got a few things up my sleeve.”

If the All Blacks are feeling restless or homesick, Weber says one song in particular brings them back closer to home.

“At the moment the team song is Controller by L.A.B. It’s a New Zealand band. They’re kind of like a little bit reggae and dub, couple of guys from Kora are in that band. That’s probably the main song that the boys are really enjoying.

“But then you’ve got your classics like your Hotel California (by The Eagles). The old country

song goes good over here – Florida Georgia Line or Knee Deep (by Zac Brown Band) … Follow Me by Uncle Cracker is a go to. I’ve got a few up there.”

When it comes to rugby, however, Weber admits that it hasn’t been easy having to wait for his chance, but is “pumped” to take the opportunity at Oita Stadium.

“It is hard. Those guys [Smith and Perenara] have been proven at this level for a long time so it’s hard to get your foot in the door when those guys are playing and playing so well.

“But I suppose the good thing about being at a World Cup is that I can get excited about being here and trying to help the team win because it’s a pretty cool situation to be in, to be here and hopefully help the team try and win this thing.”

All Blacks legend Stan Tiny Hill has passed away at the age 92.

Hill, who played at lock or loose forward, made his All Blacks debut against the Wallabies in 1955, making 19 appearances and captaining the side twice.

He also represented Canterbury and Counties at provincial level.

Hill spent his working life in the New Zealand Army and served in the J Force in Japan in 1948-49.

After retiring as a player, Hill was a selector for New Zealand Army, Canterbury and the All Blacks.

Hill was regarded as one of the toughest players of his era and was famously dropped for the second test against the Springboks in 1956 for being “too physical” against the South African forwards when playing for Canterbury.

“One of the props jumped in the lineout and he punched me,” Hill told 1 NEWS earlier this year.

“I gave this bloke two and dropped him and I walked away.

“They had the binoculars on me and saw that and said, ‘we can’t have that dirty bugger in the side,’ so they dropped me!”

Schumacher doctor denies experiment Michael Schumacher’s doctor has blasted claims that he was carrying out “experiments” on the stricken Formula One legend.

Dr Philippe Menasche treated Schumacher in Paris last month with local media labelling the procedure as “experimental”.

Little is known about the operation, but it is believed Schumacher received transfusions of inflammation-reducing stem cells.

Speaking to Italian newspaper La Republica, Menasche slammed the reports.

“I do not perform miracles,” he said. “My team and I are not doing an experiment – an abominable term that is not in line with a serious medical view.”

The seven-time world champion’s condition hasn’t been made public knowledge but a nurse told a local paper she could assure he was “conscious”.

Schumacher’s health has been kept secret ever since suffering a near-fatal brain injury when skiing with his son Mick in 2013.

The 50-year-old German driver spent three months in a medically induced coma after the accident and is currently under intensive care at his home in Switzerland.

In a post on Instagram for Schumacher’s birthday, his family wrote: “Please understand if we are following Michael’s wishes and keeping such a sensitive subject as health, in privacy.”

Mid Canty clubs dominate pennants Mid Canterbury golf clubs had plenty to celebrate lately as the Aorangi golf pennants competitions wound up for another season.

The last of the big finals was held on Sunday at the Timaru Golf Club and three of them were won by teams from Mid Canterbury golf clubs.

In the Alexander Cup final it was an all Mid Canterbury affair, with Mayfield taking on Rakaia 1 and the Rakaia Golf Club side taking it out.

The Mayfield Golf Club also had a team in the Patterson Cup final and this time came out on the right side of the score, beating Pleasant Point.

In the Redpath Cup final, it was again an all Mid Canterbury affair, with Tinwald taking on Rakaia, and the Tinwald team coming out on top.

The last of the day’s big finals, for the Moyes Cup, was the only one not to feature a Mid Canterbury club, with Fairlie and Pleasant Point squaring off in that match.

Meanwhile, the big ones – the Holmes/Hayes Cup – wrapped up a couple of weeks ago.

The Holmes Cup semis and final were held at the Denfield Golf

Course in Geraldine, along with the Hayes Cup final and the Redpath Cup semi-finals.

In the semi-finals of the Holmes Cup, Tinwald’s number one team beat the club’s number two team, while Ashburton beat Timaru in a close match that went all the way to the final putt on the 18th.

That set up a showdown between two Mid Canterbury teams that knew each other well. Josh Smith got one for Ashburton, beating Nigel Heney, but Tinwald got one back when Regan Stills beat Jeff Hewitt.

But Blair Franklin picked up another point for Ashburton with a win over John Smitheram, while Robbie Bell and Ryan Ford halved their match, and the fourballs were shared, resulting in a 6-4 win to Ashburton.

In the Hayes Cup, Pleasant Point defeated Timaru 2, while the Holmes/Hayes Cup player of the series title was this year won in convincing fashion by Tinwald’s Stills.

The Hayes Cup has been now been won for the past four years running by Pleasant Point, while Timaru’s Highfield claimed the Holmes Cup in 2018 and 2016, with Tinwald last getting their hands on it in 2017.

Corvo’s mysterious exit NZME Mystery surrounds the departure of high performance guru Alex Corvo from the Warriors.

The club say he is returning to Australia for family reasons, but the Herald understands that some negative feedback from the playing group may have also been a contributing factor.

Corvo was the head of performance (head trainer) at the Auckland club, after arriving to much fanfare before the 2018 season.

The former Raiders player was credited with the upswing in performances that year, as the Warriors looked fitter and had more endurance than in previous seasons.

But he’s leaving the club after his second campaign, with a year remaining on his contract, with his exit confirmed by head coach Stephen Kearney at last week’s end of season awards night.

“He’s going home because he wants to be closer to his family,” Kearney told the Herald .

“Most of his family is back in Australia so he has decided to go back, so that is the reasoning. We are very respectful of that situation. That’s a no-brainer. That’s why we have come to the decision. It is a mutual understanding…[with] Alex wanting to head back to Australia to be closer to his family.”

the Herald that “I have no comment to make”.

Corvo has an impressive CV. He was at the Melbourne Storm for 11 seasons from 2002-2013, a period when they made four straight grand finals (2006-09) and won the 2012 premiership.

He then spent three seasons at the Broncos, and was in the Kangaroos set up for six years under Tim Sheens.

Corvo has also been part of the Queensland State of Origin programme for the last three campaigns.

But it’s understood his methods didn’t always find favour with the playing group at Mt Smart, especially after the first season.

It’s believed there was dissatisfaction with Corvo during this past campaign, and this was expressed in reviews submitted by the players.

However Warriors CEO Cameron George denied there were player-related issues with Corvo, and said he had left a great legacy.

“Alex has absolutely raised all standards here and our base level in that respect has gone to a new level that we haven’t experienced previously,” said George. “He’s been a great contributor and is held in the highest regard by the club. He helped this club go in the right direction, and that will be proven in the long run.”

There has been significant personnel changes in the Warriors’ performance and medical area over the last two years.

Former head physiotherapist John Love left at the end of the 2018 season, after eight years with the club.

Former head trainer Balin Cupples also departed around the same time, after four years at Mt Smart.

Cupples worked as a deputy to Corvo in 2018 – after being in the head of performance role himself for three seasons – and is now at the Newcastle Knights.

During last season physiotherapist Luke Wilson and physical performance coach Mark Harvey, who had previously worked with the Blues and New Zealand Sevens, also left the Warriors. Harvey is now at the New Zealand Breakers.

And long-time head of medical John Mayhew also recently retired, after 15 seasons as the club’s doctor.

George says they have already started the recruitment process to replace Corvo, and Kearney has met with a couple of candidates.

He added that their search is not limited to league circles, and they may bring in someone with expertise from other contact sports.

“We are open minded in that respect,” said George. “It’s an area that is always changing and developing.”

Spithill says Kiwis are his fans He’s the Aussie sports villain Kiwis love.

Yes, that’s how veteran America’s Cup sailor Jimmy Spithill sees himself.

The victorious 2013 Oracle Team USA skipper, who has switched to Luna Rossa for the 2021 showdown in Auckland, remains refreshingly straight forward.

“I think Kiwis respect someone who doesn’t give up, who fights for everything on the field of play, but ashore is honest and candid when asked a question,” Spithill told redbull.com.

“I’ve always had a lot of fun in New Zealand, and can’t wait to get back there. I’ve had some awesome battles on the water over the year with the Kiwis, and I’m looking forward to a few more.”

Spithill’s cocky persona helped Oracle to an extraordinary comefrom-behind win against Team New Zealand in San Francisco.

But his efforts to retain the cup in Bermuda two years ago were foiled by Peter Burling and New Zealand’s multihull mastery.

The 40-year-old Spithill, who helmed Luna Rossa in 2007, said his passion for America’s Cup sailing remained as strong as ever.

Spithill has never been short of a word in the name of a sporting psychological battles, but he’s not talking up the Italian challenge yet.

Wide draw for ‘Shark’ no concern

By Michael Guerin There was plenty of good news and a smidgen of bad yesterday for the Te Akau trio trying to pull off a group one treble this Saturday.

And champion jockey James McDonald says even that bad news might be all right depending on the tempo of the $A1 million Epsom at Randwick.

That is the richest leg of the treble trainer Jamie Richards is trying to secure this weekend, with Te Akau Shark still retaining favouritism for the mega mile even after drawing barrier 16 with McDonald in the saddle.

That hardly sounds ideal in a capacity field but Te Akau Shark has been at his most potent when allowed to find his feet and roll home in clear air, which the tempo of Sydney’s major miles can often allow.

“And if there is any big mile race over here where a widish draw isn’t a disaster it is at Randwick,” says McDonald.

“You can overcome it there because of the long run down the back and particularly in the

big miles like the Epsom and the Doncaster.

“And while these are all good horses at this level, to be honest, I have seen stronger Epsom fields.

“So it won’t be easy to win but our draw is also not as bad as it sounds because Dreamforce (20) and Kolding (13), who are the ones to beat, have also drawn wide.

“Dreamforce will have to do some work because it likes to go forward while Kolding will be back with us.

“With a couple of lighter weighted horses whose best chance is to roll the dice and go forward in the race, there should be good tempo.”

While Te Akau and McDonald pair up with Te Akau Shark they are in opposite camps for the other group one Richards chases in Sydney on Saturday, the $A500,000 Flight Stakes.

Richards has Probabeel in the 1600m feature and while she was ridden by McDonald in her first start of this campaign he then chose local filly Funstar, who subsequently beat a luckless Probabeel by a nose in the Tea Rose

While there was plenty of reason to smile in Sydney, the news was just as good at the stable’s Matamata headquarters where Melody Belle is thriving as she prepares for Saturday’s Livamol Classic at Hastings.

The outstanding mare was spot on in her work under Opie Bosson yesterday and Richards says bad luck is his biggest concern as Melody Belle looks to become the first winner of the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown.

The field for the Livamol and the rest of the Hastings card which includes the Hawke’s Bay Guineas are finalised just after 10am today.

Aussie champs to miss Inter Dominions

By Michael Guerin The Aussie harness invasion could be larger than expected this spring but it will be without both their team captains.

Pleasing numbers of Australian-trained horses were nominated for the Inter Dominions which start at Alexandra Park on November 29 when they closed yesterday, although defending champions Tiger Tara (pacing) and former Mid Canterbury horse, Tornado Valley (trotting) were not among them.

But that still left 25 Australians among the 55 pacing entries for the Inter Dominions while the trotting series has been brought to life with 66 entries, of which only nine are from across the Tasman.

As well as not defending his Inter title, Tiger Tara will also miss the New Zealand Cup, the race he was such a heroic second in last season.

His trainer Kevin Pizzuto believes the veteran pacer has struggled since a below par performance in the Group 1 Blacks A

Fake in July and he will now not only miss the New Zealand features but the Victoria Cup on Saturday week.

While he is well into the veteran stage, Tiger Tara’s relentless racing style always adds pressure and therefore drama to the elite races so his loss will be felt.

Also missing from the Aussie glamour ranks will be Chicago Bull, who is spelling after failing to return to his best after his horror stable fall last year.

Leading Victorian trainer Emma Stewart has not nominated any horses for the series, although she has rarely targeted New Zealand races.

But the likes of Thursday’s Kilmore Cup winner San Carlo, Queensland star Colt Thirty One and a brilliant comeback winner on Saturday night in Bling It On will provide plenty of quality in the Aussie pacing team for the Inters.

series, with so many being locals and therefore more likely to actually want to start, does leave the ATC with options.

They could, in a radical departure from the norm in the historic series, look at running three trotting heats per round if the pacing

nominations fell away enough that there were only two heats.

“That is in the conditions and a real option for us,” says ATC racing manager Regan Cotter.

“Obviously we want to have as close to a full field as possible, which is 12 for the Interdoms. Af-

ter the first acceptance payments on October 25 we should have more idea who is serious about the series and ideally we would like to run three pacing heats for the three rounds.

“I think that would be the case if we had, say, 30 horses so 10 per heat.

“But if we got below that number we could have just the two pacing heats and then hold three trotting heats because I’m confident we will have way more than 36 trotters whose connections want to start in the series.”

It is not in the conditions to be able to run three heats for both gaits.

While Tiger Tara is out of both the Inters and the New Zealand Cup, the chances of defending Cup hero Thefixer making it to the NZ Cup reduced ever so slightly yesterday.

He is still having hoof issues and will miss Friday’s Canterbury Classic and trial next week but would need to be racing by Ashburton on October 28 at the latest it would seem if he is to make it to Addington at his peak.

MORRISS, Wyvern Clifford (Cliff) – On October 1, 2019 at Princes Court Resthome, Ashburton. Aged 91. Much loved husband for 70 years of the late Elsie. Father and father-in-law of Cheryl and Ken Vaughan, Noel and Kay, the late Clive, and Judy, and Annette and John Begg.

Holiday tennis a big hit

Mid Canterbury’s youngest tennis stars are getting the chance to sharpen up their skills ahead of the season through the Mid Canterbury Tennis School Holiday Camp.

Jack Tiller said they had around 25 students enrolled for the fourday programme that began on Monday.

“It is a good opportunity for the kids to work on a few skills before the season,” he said. “We have a mix of kids that have never played before, up to the ones that are in

our top ACE squad.”

Tiller said there was a performance aspect to the programme for the older kids, who would likely be playing inter-club and representative tennis once the season starts.

As well as focusing on the skills on the court, there has also been a

focus on off-court learning, which came in handy during heavy rain on Monday.

“We are doing a bit of off-court stuff inside as well. They are learning how to score, which is more for the younger kids, and we have also been talking about mental toughness and tactics so

there is a real on-court and offcourt focus,” he said.

Junior and open grade interclub tennis competitions begin on October 12, while sunset doubles and twilight tennis get under way this week. The courts have been busy with players over all grades brushing up their skills.
