Needle exchange reducing harm

Ashburton’s needle exchange is used by up to 40 people every month, The district’s needle exchange in Community House is funded by the Ministry of Health and its function is to reduce harm in the community by preventing needles being dumped in rivers or bins where other people could potentially pick them up and get hurt, says exchange manager Parris Heath.

The facility allows needles, tubes and syringes to be disposed of safely; it is not there to stop drug use or abuse, she said.

For users, the exchange is a step towards avoiding the danger of addicts re-

using or sharing equipment and exposing themselves to blood borne diseases, Heath said.

A survey of clients conducted by Needle Exchange New Zealand shows about one in every 100 kiwis has Hepatitis C. In the Ashburton clinic people can come in confidentially and exchange their used equipment for clean. While there, clients can talk about their drug use if they wish, but there is no obligation to do so, she said.

Heath said the used equipment is put in a locked bin and taken every two months to be destroyed.

He said a ‘1-4-1’ programme was recently introduced, meaning users can

come in and any needle or barrel they bring in will get them a 3ml barrel and any needle in return.

The exchange can also provide safe disposal containers for people to take away with them, so they are not exposing the people they live with to danger, he said.

Heath said they never asked about a client’s drug use, but if they want to talk they are most welcome to, and a referral could be made to rehab services.

In 2008 Ashburton’s north east business estate was just a block of bare farmland, its future as a home for business and industry was still in its infancy.

Today almost half of the first stage of what is now known as the Ashburton Business Park has been sold, netting its owners, the Ashburton District Council, more than $15 million.

The council developed the business estate as a 30-year project to provide a base for busi-

nesses from passive to heavy. It was designed to be developed over two stages – 44 hectares in stage one and 40 in stage two with a range of lot sizes that would be carved off to suit individual buyers’ needs.

While the council carried the cost of development, it was planned as an investment that would progressively return money into council coffers.

Development work on stage one of the estate was completed in December 2010, but reaching that point involved hundreds of

hours of consultation with neighbours who feared the park would have a negative impact on their semi-rural lifestyle. To alleviate their concerns, the park is now surrounded by grassy, well planted bunds that provide a visual barrier between residential and industrial areas.

The first land sales were made well before the park opened.

Stage one work was completed in December 2010 and Canterbury Longrun Roofing Iron became the first business to build and move on site in July 2011.

The park was officially opened

by Prime Minister John Key in 2011.

Since then council business services manager Paul Brake said 25 lots had been sold with an approximate value of $15 million.

Six of those sales, worth $3.4 million, had been made in the past six months.

About 45 per cent of stage one has now sold or is under offer.

Work on the 40 hectare stage two development is completed, but land sales in this block have not yet started.

Rep hockey team of 1958 reunited

It’s been a long time between drinks, but the Ashburton primary representative hockey team that competed at the first Hatch Cup Tournament in Christchurch in 1958 reunited at Hotel Ashburton on Friday night.

Seven of the 1958 team shared their memories from the tournament, in which the Ashburton team placed fourth overall.

Team member John Morgan said the reunion was thoroughly enjoyed by all, almost 60 years since playing in the inaugural Hatch Cup Tournament.

“It was great to have everyone together,” he said.

“Someone would mention something and then we’d all remember and have a good talk about it, it was very enjoyable.”

A ship carrying palm kernel extract (PKE) that’s been barred from entering New Zealand for nearly a month should be sent back to Malaysia, says Labour’s biosecurity spokesman Damien O’Connor.

The MV Molat, which is carrying more than 23,000 tonnes of PKE, was due to arrive in Tauranga on September 6 but couldn’t get permission to dock from officials. It has been sitting offshore.

The PKE on board is from an unregistered supplier in Malaysia, Mr O’Connor says.

It’s a potential biosecurity hazard risk to New Zealand and the ship should be sent back.

“Unregistered suppliers do not have to meet the stringent safety checks that registered suppliers do, to ensure there is no biosecurity risk to New Zealand. In this case, we do not know what checks were applied,” he says.

Foot and mouth disease contamination is possible from such imports, he says.

Ashburtonians can access the needle exchange three days a week, on Tuesday and Friday it is open from 10.30am to 2.30pm and on Thursday it’s open between 12pm to 2pm.

Ski business is big business

Mt Hutt Skifield’s cut price seasons passes have been a huge success and are likely to be repeated next year, says general manager operations, James Urquhart.

“We’d had a tough time over the past few years and decided this year that our goal was to get more guests on the mountain.

We dropped our prices and it’s worked. We’ve had more people of all ages on the field,” he said.

He’s made a pitch to the NZSki. com board for a repeat of the low price deal for next season and says he’s confident they’ll agree.

The average number of ski days for pass holders was three to four.

For the past two years the mountain and Methven businesses had been running a 10 and under ski, stay and eat free deal and that had been an unqualified success. This deal is now part of the winter package, Urquhart said.

People might think of Mt Hutt Skifield as a winter playground that made millions for a faceless corporate owner, but that’s a long way from the real picture of the NZSki.com business, Urquhart said.

He spoke recently at the Mid South Canterbury Community Trust annual meeting and said the company returned a significant amount of money to the community each year.

The company is owned by the Davies family, owners of Northern Southland Transport, but they deliberately kept a low profile and that meant contributions back to the community usually flew well under the radar, he said.

Mt Hutt was a big supporter of the Methven community and the Methven Lions Club.

It hosted the Lions big rides day where people paid to come up to the field during the summer to ride the lifts or mountain bike.

This could raise up to $45,000 for the community. And the service club ran a winter-long sausage sizzle every weekend as a fundraiser, Urquhart said.

“We also sponsor thousands of dollars to Canteen and this year raised more than $10,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

“We also paid $50,000 for a rock from the Christchurch earthquake and that money went directly into the Red Cross Appeal.”

In addition, for years the company had had a deal with staff on closed days, that if they turned up to work they were paid. In return they had to do two hours of community work.

“Two years ago, as a company we gave $450,000 away over our four-month season. And with a staff of 300, they spend their wages in the district too. Our wage bill tops $3.5 million and a lot of that goes into the Blue and Brown pubs.”

Keeping the skifield ticking over each day required a huge amount of work by a large number of people, Urquhart said.

“My day starts at 4.30am. We deal with black ice every day and we move a lot of snow before we get open every day. I have to make a call by 6am whether to open or not and at any time the weather can kill the day.”

The company had a high return rate of staff each year, around 65 per cent and between 20 and 30 per cent of its full-time staff are locals.

The company’s investment in the field was huge, not only in people but in its 92 snow-making guns, fleet of snow groomers and regularly upgraded lifts.

All of that along with the Mt Hutt experience itself, saw the company win the title New Zealand’s Best Ski Area for 2015.

“Fingers crossed, we’re trying to win that again this year,” Urquhart said.

Shock over sudden death at university Students and staff at a University of Canterbury halls of residence are in shock after the sudden death of a woman student on Saturday night.

Police have confirmed the death is not suspicious and has been referred to the coroner.

Police and ambulance were on the scene at the Rochester and Rutherford Halls of Residence at about 7.30pm on Saturday.

The halls were initially cordoned off by police. Security guards were also still in place at the halls yesterday morning.

Stephen Kissick, principal of the hall, requested privacy to help all students and family deal

with the “tragic loss”.

“Rochester and Rutherford Hall community wish to express our deep sadness at the loss of one of our students.

“We are grieving with the family of a bright, wonderful student,” Kissick said in a statement. We greatly appreciate the work of the police and the university through this difficult time.

“We will continue to support our students with extensive support from our staff, senior tutors, chaplains, the university’s student services and Victim Support. We are grateful to the many people who have contact-

ed us offering their support and prayers.”

Police have said that a postmortem examination was being carried out into the woman’s death, and that once that was completed they might release more details about the incident.

A number of students milling around the front of the halls yesterday said that they knew the victim, however they had been told by the university not to comment on what had happened.

Some were gathered in small groups, providing support to those affected by the tragedy.

Surgical bus delayed

The Mobile Surgical Unit, which visits Ashburton regularly, has been delayed until the end of the year due to staffing.

The 42-tonne blue and yellow surgery bus travels along the country visiting rural areas to provide elective surgery in areas which lack permanent surgical facilities.

Recently it has had to reschedule planned visits to the town.

Due to staffing changes the bus has not been able to get surgeons

to come down from Christchurch, meaning next week’s planned visit had to be pushed back.

The service, which usually visits Ashburton for one day every five weeks, is now expected to be back in early November.

Managing Director Dr Stuart Gowland said it was just the two months where the service would be delayed coming to Ashburton.

He said usually the bus would have one nurse and some surgeons travel down from Christchurch, and then extra nurses would

be supplied by Ashburton Hospital. The service has been coming to Ashburton since May 2012 and came because of the closure of the surgical theatre due to the Canterbury earthquakes.

Between May 2012 and August 2015 there have been 284 patients treated in Ashburton and around half were for general surgery.

There were also a large amount of gynaecological surgeries and a small amount of dental ones.

As of July this year, since the service started in 2002, 20,000 people have been treated na-

tionally. An estimated 103 people are set to pass through the bus to receive treatment. The Mobile Surgical Unit is operated by Mobile Health, and independent organisation however, they receive funding from the government and District Health Boards to complete a certain volume of surgeries.

Dr Gowland said for people to access the bus they would see their GP as normal, who would then refer them on to a person in Christchurch who books appointments for the service.

Three people armed with weapons including a hammer and a machete robbed a shop in Christchurch. Police are looking for three people who were involved in an aggravated robbery of the Night n Day store on Ferry Rd in Woolston at 5am on Saturday. They presented weapons at a staff member before taking off with cigarettes and cash. The staff member was uninjured.

The first of the Ashburton Society of Arts weekly workshops was held at the Short Street Studio on Saturday with beginners trying their hand at painting with watercolours.

The Art Start classes will be held for the next five weeks, covering drawing, acrylic painting, oil painting, pastels and collage techniques.

Sue Simpson, who taught seven beginners on Saturday, said the class was enjoyed by all.

“They were keen to carry on to the next level,” she said.

“We went through the paints and the brushes, basic techniques and the interaction between the colours and the way they mix.”

■ MID CANTERBURY CHILDREN’S THEATRE

Bright future for musical theatre some surprisingly good roller skating! Libby Higson was magnetic as Kira (it’s hard enough having to put on one accent, let alone change it throughout the show) and her vocal work was outstanding.

Likewise, Joe Danielson was well-cast as Sonny and his comedic timing was a treat.

The tragedy and comedy duo of Gabby Stringer (Melpomene) and Sophie Kettley (Calliope) was exceptional and the ‘Evil Woman’ number still had me laughing after the show.

Caleb Livingstone also gave a strong performance as Danny with his velvet-smooth voice.

Great vocals, fantastic harmonies, slick dance moves and plenty of humour brought the 80s to life in this zany show.

Loved it!

Congratulations to the whole MCCT team and I hope that many Mid Cantabrians skate their way down to ATEC to watch the magic come alive!

Heavy rain brings flooding Cars are at risk of being washed into the Waikato River in Huntly and homes are flooded, the Fire Service says.

Reports are coming in of houses flooded on both sides of the river on Riverview Rd and Great South Rd, and also on Mary Street.

A slip has taken out a laundry, carport and car at one property on Riverview Road, where the water is about a foot deep. The road is being closed.

Earlier rain and thunderstorms caused some surface flooding and power outages in Auckland. The Fire Service said the worst-hit Auckland area was East Coast Bays. A slip at Waiwera also forced the closure of Waiwera Road.

Weatherwatch.co.nz issued an alert for

the Upper North Island on Sunday, predicting there would be localised flooding from slow moving, intense downpours.

Other North Island areas, including Bay of Plenty, Coromandel Peninsula, East Cape and Central Plateau also faced a drenching.

NZTA said there were several small slips on SH25 between Thames and Coromandel but all were passable.

The MetService earlier said a front moving eastwards across New Zealand on Sunday would bring rain to Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Waitomo, Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty.

Many of these regions were saturated during recent days, so surface flooding and slips were possible.

Bibbidi bobbidi boo! What a treat it was to witness Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre’s production of Cinderella Kids and Xanadu Junior.

The junior cast stole the hearts of the audience with their precious smiles and tuneful voices as they wove the magic of the Cinderella story.

And what outstanding diction for such young singers! There was great comedy with the wicked stepmother and stepsisters, and I was in awe of the beautiful Cinderella played by Molly McKenna – a star in the making.

My favourite part was when the Fairy Godmother transformed Cinderella into a beautiful princess; watching the mice turn into horses and pumpkins turn into a carriage was super cute and cleverly constructed.

The senior cast of Xanadu Jr. proved that there is a bright future for musical theatre in Mid Canterbury.

BY NOAH GRAHAM Making a vintage truck look as good a new is no easy feat, but it is worth the effort.

Farmer and vintage car owner Roger Jones bought his 1949 Ford Bonus four years ago and it has been fully restored since then, costing Jones a “lot of money”.

“More than you would like to know.”

However, he said it was well worth it.

Jones and his wife, Isla, take the truck out as often as they can and have travelled around the South Island and parts of Australia.

While in Australia last year they travelled from Perth to Sydney and had loved the journey.

Jones said he bought the truck from a man in Auckland who had it stored underneath a tarpaulin for more than 35 years, causing moisture to seep in through the vehicle’s paintwork.

He said it was easy enough taking the vehicle apart, it was the putting it back together that was the hard part.

The truck had to have the deck and panelling restored but he made sure it was repainted in its original colour, Jones said.

The Ford boasts a genuine Ford V8 engine with about 100 horsepower, a three-speed gearbox and is finished off with polished mahogany on the back.

Bec Sandys has always wanted to be an actor.

Bec Sandys was just about to give up on her dream of being in the movies when she landed a star role.

The born and bred Ashburtonian has just completed 15 days of filming in Wellington for the New Zealand feature-length movie Cade.

She plays the female lead Ange, opposite the male lead of Cade played by well-known comedian Brendhan Lovegrove.

Lovegrove and Sandys are accompanied on the cast list by another name in the New Zealand comedy industry – Jeremy Elwood, who plays a comedy club owner.

The feature-length movie centres around Cade’s dissatisfaction with life affecting his art, and the darker side of comedians. It was directed and written by Mi-

cah Steller, produced by Steller Films, and will be entered into the Cannes and Sundance film festivals.

Sandys first got her passion for acting when she starred in the Ashburton Operatic’s production of Annie as a child.

She later studied theatre and film at university and settled in Christchurch.

After the earthquakes it hit home to her just how transient life was, and she decided to throw herself into what she had always wanted to do.

She joined Christchurch’s Elmwood Players, and whenever she wasn’t working in her full-time media and marketing roles, she would be on stage. She performed numerous roles with Elmwood, won a Theatrefest regional best actor award, and even landed a professional job, playing five characters in Lightening

Wanting to break into film and television, she undertook auditions and in January moved to Auckland at the advice of her agent.

While working as campaign manager for Auckland mayoral candidate Mark Thomas, she undertook many an audition for television and film, ranging from commercials to main acting roles. Landing those roles was not easy, and Sandys had been just about to throw in the towel and move back to Christchurch when she got the call to say her audition for Cade had been successful.

Fifteen days of filming had been full-on, with some days beginning at 4pm and not finishing until 4am the next day.

“It’s been really surreal to be honest,” Sandys said as she visit-

ed family in Ashburton last week.

Many of the movie settings were comedy clubs in Wellington, and Sandys has got to know many of New Zealand’s comedians, such as Elwood’s partner Michelle A’Court, up-and-coming talent Patch Lambert, comedy bar owner Vaughan King, and actor Paul Craze.

“I have found my family,” she said. She was even thinking about doing some comedy herself, trying out a routine at an open mic night.

And she was hopeful further acting opportunities would come from her Cade performance.

“After doing this film I know acting is definitely what I’m committing my life to for the next 50 years. And I’m very well aware that it’s a roller coaster of a ride, some days you can have work pouring in and other days nothing.”

New approach needed to fund tertiary study

T

here’s something very wrong in New Zealand when we’re penalising our best and brightest young people by forcing them to start their working lives saddled with debt.

Inland Revenue has released details of student debt and it makes horrifying reading.

Hundreds of students are declaring themselves bankrupt to have their debts wiped, others are heading overseas and are then unable to come home for fear of being hit with massive debt repayment penalties.

The amount written off through bankruptcies is apparently only exceeded by the amount written off because the impoverished students died. It runs into many millions each year.

Clearly there has to be a better way to pay for tertiary education that does not put graduates in debt for life.

For any student it’s a hard pill to swallow knowing that for every one of them there are probably two of their peers who’re being funded by the government through work and income benefits.

It’s a nonsense that we pay people not to work while we saddle those who choose to study, achieve and eventually become big contributors to society with debt they often carry for life.

If we’re paying those who don’t work then we must also pay those who study a solid living allowance.

That’s not suggesting we should fund a lavish student lifestyle, but simply paying course costs would be a good start.

Possibly add in an accommodation allowance and we might be getting close to an even playing field.

Yes, there would need to be conditions and some tough criteria around those allowances, but tying allowance to performance would be simple.

Do the work, pass and you’re funded for the following year, fail to study, waste time and your allowance is stopped.

As a country we’ll only ever be as good as the intellectual capital we grow, but right now we might be growing it but we’re failing to nurture those young achievers.

Their choices come down to trying to establish a working life with a huge debt on board and then finding that debt is an impediment to homeownership or they can head overseas and leave their debt behind.

Either way we lose.

Changes to the way we deal with family violence F

amily violence has a devastating impact on individuals and communities.

Sadly, the magnitude of the problem across all sectors of New Zealand society is huge.

In many cases those brought up in homes where violence is the norm will go on to repeat the cycle in their own families.

As the Minister of Justice and your local MP I believe we need to act sooner to keep victims safer.

We need to act earlier to change the behaviour of those abusing those close to them.

To do this, we need a new approach to better identify risk and recognise the patterns of family violence.

The first step is making systemwide changes. Across 16 different portfolios, Ministers and departments are working together to redesign the way our system prevents and responds to family violence.

The Government is also making sweeping changes to family violence legislation, stemming from

a comprehensive review of the 20-year-old Domestic Violence Act. These changes will focus on prioritising victim safety and reducing perpetrator violence.

We want people to be able to get help without having to go to court, and we’ll put the safety of victims at the heart of bail decisions.

We’ll also make evidence gathering in family violence cases easier for police and less traumatic for victims.

We are making protection orders easier to apply for with simpler application forms.

In addition, non-government organisations (NGOs) will be able apply on behalf of particularly vulnerable victims who are un-

able to apply themselves.

We will improve protection and care for children by better provision for the rights of children under protection orders, aligning Care of Children orders to the family violence regime, and trialling supervised handovers.

We will also make offending while on a protection order a specific aggravating factor in sentencing.

We want to intervene earlier and be more effective at helping perpetrators change their behaviours and break the intergenerational cycle.

We want family violence offending to be clearly flagged in the criminal justice system. So we’re: Creating a virtual framework of family violence offences to ensure such behaviour is flagged on criminal records.

Making additional information available to judges and Police.

Treating perpetrators who use family violence differently at bail and sentencing.

We want to ensure that family violence is effectively prosecuted and that these behaviours are clearly criminalised.

This will be supported through new family violence offences of strangulation, coercion to marry, and assault on a family member.

We want a better integrated system and consistent practices so we’re supporting the Ministerial Group to develop an integrated family violence system.

This will mean better information sharing across agencies and professionals to effectively assess and manage risk and codes of practice to support consistent delivery of services across agencies and cases.

While the Government is driving change to help reduce abuse in Kiwi families, family violence is not a problem that the Government can solve alone.

To really tackle this issue, all New Zealanders must make a commitment not to tolerate violence, wherever it occurs.

Prosecution ‘will be done’ Russian-backed rebels responsible for shooting down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, killing 298 people including 38 Australians, over Ukraine could face prosecution in Dutch courts once international investigations are finished.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says that’s one of several options for justice to be served if, as expected, Russia vetoes any United Nations Security Council action.

A Dutch-led investigation has found close to 100 people were linked to the transport and firing of the Buk missile and that it was driven from Russia into an area of eastern Ukraine controlled by Moscowbacked rebels.

“The next step is to identify those re-

sponsible, the chain of command within the Russian military and all those who were involved in making the decision and actually operating that missile,” Ms Bishop said. “That is under way and I expect that by the end of the year, maybe early next year, the list of those that we believe should be held accountable will be confirmed and then there must be a prosecution.”

Russia has rejected all suggestions its military was involved in the incident.

The Dutch government summoned Russia’s ambassador in The Hague for a diplomatic rebuke on Friday after Moscow made remarks critical of the investigation and Russia is expected to summon the Dutch ambassador in Moscow today to ex-

plain its reasons for rejecting the findings.

Ms Bishop wouldn’t rule out a UNbacked prosecution but expects Russia will veto any attempt to set it up.

“There can be a Lockerbie-style prosecution, a tribunal that’s set up by the international community, or there can be domestic prosecutions in, say, the Netherlands,” she said.

“As long as they had the powers of extradition and the like, a prosecution could be mounted successfully in a domestic jurisdiction, but that would cover the interests of the 298 victims aboard that flight.”

She rejected Russia’s theories about how the plane came to be shot as “improbable, implausible”.

William and Kate finish Canadian tour Prince William and Kate have expressed their gratitude for the warm welcome they received from Canadians as the British royals wrapped up an eight-day tour with their two young children.

Prince William said the trip was memorable because they brought Prince George, 3, and Princess Charlotte, who is 16 months, with them for their first official trip abroad as a family of four.

“We feel very lucky to have been able to introduce George and Charlotte to Canada,” William said.

“This country will play a big part in the lives of our children and we have created such happy memories for our family during this visit.”

George, wearing red shorts and a blue jumper with knee-high blue socks, enthusiastically waved to the crowd with both hands just before the British royals boarded a sea plane at the departure ceremony.

The departure ceremony yesterday offered the only chance for public crowds to see George and Charlotte on the trip. The media had access to them two other times – at the airport arrival ceremony and a children’s party for military families.

There were also gifts on the final day of the visit as British Columbia Premier Christy Clark presented William and Kate with child-sized jerseys for the Vancouver Canucks National Hockey League team with Charlotte and George printed on the backs.

Kate Bush is to release a live album recorded during her sell-out run at London’s Hammersmith Apollo two years ago. The 30-track album was recorded during her award-winning Before The Dawn residency in London – the singer’s first live performances for 35 years. The album, also called Before The Dawn, will be split over three CDs to reflect the gigs, which were split into a trio of acts. More than 80,000 tickets for Bush’s residency – 22 shows at the Apollo in west London, the venue where she effectively retired from live performances after six weeks on the road in 1979 - sold out in less than 15 minutes. The album is dominated by her fifth studio album Hounds Of Love, which features across all three acts.

Two towns on the outskirts of Adelaide are under threat from floodwaters from the Gawler and Wakefield rivers, with residents bracing for more rain.

SA SES said while the river levels aren’t rising there, is still a lot of water around Gawler and Port Wakefield.

“The plan is to get in contact with people around those areas and get an idea of the extent of the floods,” an SA SES spokesman said yesterday.

South Australians in flood-affected areas should keep sandbags in place to protect their property, with more rain forecast for the soaked state coming in from yesterday,

through today and tomorrow.

Areas including Mount Lofty Ranges and mid north of the state, already affected by last week’s cyclonic storm that lead to the entire state losing electricity, need to prepare for another soaking, according to SA SES spokesman.

Possible thunderstorms are forecast for western and southern coasts, Pastoral, Flinders, Riverland, Murraylands and Upper South East districts.

“As more rain is expected in the coming days, people are advised to leave sandbags in place,” an SES spokeswoman said.

Chicken, asparagus and broad bean salad

1 bunch asparagus, trimmed 500g packet frozen broad beans 1T olive oil 500g Tegel Lean & Lite Skinless Breast Fillets, sliced 1 packet mesclun salad mix 1 radicchio, leaves separated (optional) 1 yellow pepper, sliced 150g goats cheese, crumbled

Dressing: 1/4 C olive oil 2T lemon juice 1t honey Salt and pepper to taste ■ Bring a medium saucepan of lightly-salted water to the boil.

Add the asparagus, bring back to the boil and blanch for 2 minutes. Drain, then place in cold water to cool.

■ Add the frozen broad beans to the saucepan, bring back to the boil and blanch for 1 minute.

4 Drain, run the broad beans under cold water to cool then peel.

■ Heat the olive oil in a frying pan.

Add the chicken and cook over medium heat until it is golden and cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.

■ Place the salad mix, radicchio, yellow pepper, asparagus and broad beans in a salad bowl.

Doing it Mai way in Thailand

“O

oh, ahh, hot” I yelp, as an elderly Thai man dips his foot into a bucket of warm charcoal before pressing sesame oil onto my back.

The sizzling sound makes me wince, but the soothing effect on my muscles reveals my initial fear of being cooked like a piece of fried chicken was unfounded.

I presume the man’s foot has developed a Kevlar-like quality, as he grins at me while returning it to the heat, before going to work on my legs.

A yam khang massage – using a technique dating back hundreds of years – is one of many unexpected treats on my trip to northern Thailand.

The country’s authorities have ambitious plans to boost annual revenue from overseas tourists, and they hope to achieve this by encouraging people to explore lesser-known areas.

Chiang Mai, the former seat of the Lanna kingdom, is renowned for its temples and has been on the southeast Asia backpackers’ trail for decades.

Holidaymakers coming to Thailand for a week or two have often preferred to head south to islands such as Phuket and Ko Phi-Phi Don, like I did on my only previous visit to the country over a decade ago.

But in recent years, Chiang Mai has developed a growing reputation as a city break destination, and I find it the perfect base for exploring this relaxed and fascinating region, which is largely rural and has swathes of rich forestry.

It seems like every street corner, shop or restaurant has a portrait of the king and queen. One of their most notable achievements has been to persuade the hill tribes of northern Thailand to stop growing opium, which harmed the land and provided only a tiny income.

The royals ensured they received help in switching to crops such as coffee, carrots, peaches and flowers. Beginning in the late 1960s, the project resulted in the tribes becoming self-sustained with a better quality of life.

The scheme also led to community-based tourism initiatives, like the village of Ban Rai Kong Khing – the site of my unusual massage.

With rising debts and few jobs available, residents began using locally-sourced organic produce to make items they can sell, such as soap bars with honey extracts and mosquito repellents from lemongrass oil.

Soon after wiping the excess oil off my back I am introduced to a woman who has the unenviable

Dhara Dhevi resort, Chiang Mai, Thailand. task of showing me how she uses paper to make decorative flags sold for use in people’s homes during a celebration.

My ragged attempt is destined for the recycling bin rather than the village shop, but my instructor upholds her nation’s Land of Smiles reputation by beaming at me.

One place where my shabby attempts at getting hands-on would not go down well is Chiang Mai’s Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden.

It’s Thailand’s first internationalstandard botanical garden and features a number of rare plants.

And for those of us not particularly green-fingered, the main attraction is the canopy walkway.

Meandering through treetops along the 504-metre long route ensures a panoramic view of the mist-shrouded Doi Suthep-Pui mountains.

It feels like I have the entire walkway to myself and with nothing but the sound of birds, the environment could not be more different to the chaos of Bangkok.

The Dhara Dhevi resort is another location where it feels like I am the only person around, thanks to its 24-hectare size. It’s

located a 10-minute drive from the centre of Chiang Mai, but it looks like I’m entering a separate city as I pass over a bridge and through a gate, surrounded by high walls.

I’m not surprised to be told that the site was designed to look like a city of the Lanna kingdom, which covered much of what is now northern Thailand from around the 13th to 18th centuries.

There is a prayer hall modelled on a Buddhist temple, amphitheatre, market, paddy fields and buffalo. It looks incredibly old, and I’m stunned to learn it’s been open for just over 10 years.

The villa I am staying in is equally impressive. Laid out over two floors, it features a fourposter bed, huge bathroom with whirlpool bath, a lounge area and even a piano.

I also stay at the Siripanna Villa Resort & Spa, closer to the city centre. Its most striking feature is an outdoor swimming pool based on the region’s ancient Mae Ping river.

Frangipani trees provide an inviting scent as I breaststroke my way around a lap of the pool, shaped in the outline of a square.

The Siripanna’s location means it’s just a few minutes in a taxi for a visit to Chiang Mai’s night market.

Dozens of stalls line the streets selling traditional northern Thai food, such as spicy sausages, mild curries and sticky rice.

A sign in the Siripanna’s reception stating that pungent durian fruit are banned from the premises has made me determined to give it a try, so I am thrilled when I find a stand selling dozens of them.

They have a reputation of smelling like hell and tasting like heaven, but one revolting mouthful is all I need to understand the hotel management are spot on.

My last few days in Chiang Mai are spent experiencing some of the city’s exciting activities.

Leaping off a 50-metre high platform, my pulse races as I hurtle between jungle tree tops at the Flight of the Gibbon zipline tour.

The five kilometre course consists of a combination of ziplines – including one said to be the longest in Asia at 800 metres – and swaying bridges.

It’s impossible not to let out a loud “whoa!” on the first few

crossings, until the fear of falling is replaced by the thrill of flying.

Next up on my adrenalinpumped itinerary is racing a wooden cart down a steep, bumpy track at Mon Cham.

The controls are simple – steer with your feet and keep hold of the brake – and I am soon in first place. But just as I begin thinking of victory, I hit a rock and veer to the right, crashing into a ditch.

After eventually reaching the finish line, I climb out of my vehicle to discover we’re on a hill ridge overlooking a spectacular landscape of green mountains.

My heart rate settles down and I sit on a bench to soak up the panoramic view, accompanied by a butterfly.

The pace slows further on a visit to forest monastery Wat Umong, where a group meditation session led by a monk leaves me with calm, positive thoughts.

Sitting on a mat for half an hour, I have no phone, no internet and nothing to do but breathe.

Like everything I’ve encountered in Chiang Mai, it’s another unexpected treat.

Ravenscroft tops the poll A tired Ashburton College fronted up to take on Sunshine Grammar in the last game of their Australian tour on Thursday.

College had the home team under pressure at 31 for 3 early on, with Will Graham taking two wickets and Connor O’Grady taking one, until the opposition captain stood up with a fine 92.

Gareth Hunt then picked up five wickets as College contained the hosts to 214.

The pitch aided Grammar’s opening fast bowler who collected five wickets as College were eventually dismissed for a meagre 85, with Liam O’Connor, Josh Buchanan, Graham and Hunt the only ones to make double figures.

College’s most valuable player for the tour was Tom Ravenscroft.

This was voted on each game by the players themselves, who awarded three, two and one

point for the players they considered most valuable in each game.

Will Graham was second and Gareth Hunt third.

Ravenscroft, the opening batsman, had a standout tour with the bat, while bowling when required.

The team was based at the Caloundra Cricket Club for the duration of the tour, and had some coaching with resident pro Alan Gale.

The club had just finished building a new indoor training facility and will look next to upgrade its pitch.

Ashburton College has aided Caloundra’s fundraising cause with a donation, cementing a relationships that began in 2010.

Ashburton College’s Christchurch campaign begins on October 16, with an away game at St Thomas.

Guptill facing mounting pressure to score runs The pressure continues to mount on test opener Martin Guptill following another disappointing innings on the second day of the second test in Kolkata.

Guptill suffered the ignominy of trying to leave a ball from Bhuvneshwar Kumar outside off stump, but not raising his elbow high enough.

It might have hit the funny bone, but there was nothing humorous about the ball cannoning into his stumps.

He made 13 from as many balls.

Guptill continues to be given chances at test level, a logical move given his obvious talents in the game’s shorter forms as the world’s sixth-ranked one-day international and fourth-ranked Twenty20 batsman.

He has received encouragement to play his shots and coach Mike Hesson stressed he never wants a player going into a test thinking it is “last chance saloon”.

However, the tag is becoming implicit as this series progresses.

Guptill has had three opportunities for returns of 21, 0 and 13.

His lack of runs against quality opposition has been well-documented – he’s had 27 innings since his return against England in May 2015 for an average of 27.51.

The 30-year-old had some success in Zimbabwe, averaging 46 from three innings, including 87 in the second test.

That is his only half-century in the last 14 innings.

Unless he makes a dramatic recovery, it’s hard to imagine he would be given further opportunities at home, after Jeet Raval joined the test squad in Africa.

Taylor’s maturity stepping in as Black Caps skipper was commendable, given his axing from the role in 2012.

The fact he accepted at short notice showed wounds have healed.

Cantabs withstand intense challenge

Hammers smash East Coast Mid Canterbury moved ahead of Wairarapa Bush into fourth spot on the Heartland Championship ladder with a 76-22 thumping of East Coast in Ruatoria on Saturday.

The Hammers’ 10-to-three try victory, coupled with Buller’s 2624 win over Bush in Masterton, moves Mid Canterbury onto 22 points – two more than Wairarapa, with two games remaining before the Meads Cup and Lochore Cup playoffs.

The convincing win may have been against one of the competition’s weaker teams, but Mid Canterbury produced an impressive display.

A combination of solid work by a determined forward pack along with backs with pace to burn had the East Coast supporters applauding a number

of Mid Canterbury’s scintillating tries.

East Coast were the first to strike with an opportunist try after two minutes but Mid Canterbury took control of the game with three tries to openside flanker Jordan Stewart, centre Maleli Sau and right winger Christian Vainerere in the 12th, 17th and 24th minutes respectively.

They were all converted by classy first five-eight Jarred Percival.

And there was little respite for the Sky Blues with Mid Canterbury crossing the line twice more for a 38-6 lead at halftime.

As they did in the first half, East Coast posted the first points after the break, but from then on, until the 66th minute when Coast midfield back Loni Fisiihoi

crossed the chalk line, it was all Mid Canterbury.

Mid Canterbury’s forwards, led by lock Jon Dampney, and backs, combined superbly.

Gone was the traditional kick for field position then drive to the line.

On this occasion the forwards ran and passed like backs and with speedsters on both wings and at fullback, Mid Canterbury scored some memorable tries.

A number of Mid Canterbury players’ performances deserved man of the match recognition.

Stewart, who as well as scoring two tries was everywhere, Sau, who scored two six pointers and had a hand in others and fullback Tomoci Nabakeke all produced excellent performances.

Steyn boots Boks to victory over Aussies The Wallabies have been left to rue squandered chances and occasional moments of “laziness” which coach Michael Cheika says cost them a test match they should have won.

display but their failure to make their dominance count on the scoreboard opened the door for the Springboks – who were held tryless – to snap a three-game losing streak.

enough shape to score another two or three tries, which we really should have done.

“That’s some of the best footy we’ve played in the middle of the field this season. Maybe we wanted to score too much.”

It also appears to have come at a heavy cost with new No.8 Sean McMahon (ankle) sent for scans and facing a potentially lengthy spell on the sidelines.

McMahon hurt his ankle in a tackle just before the half-hour mark and tried to play on after having it strapped but didn’t emerge after half-time.

All of South Africa’s points came via recalled five-eighth Morne Steyn, who kicked four penalties, two drop goals and expertly steered his team to victory.

Canterbury have resisted a late Taranaki surge to claim a 39-34 win and stretch their lead to eight in the NPC premiership competition.

The two clubs, sitting in third and first on the ladder, produced a stirring display in New Plymouth yesterday and traded blows for the full 80 minutes.

But a pair of late Bulls tries was not enough to catch the Cantabrians, who had put themselves in an unassailable position with a 76th-minute Jordie Barrett penalty.

Canterbury now move to 35 points after securing a bonus point for scoring four tries, while Taranaki remain in third but gain their own bonus point.

Canterbury’s afternoon started in the worst possible way when halfback Alby Mathewson was stretchered off in the third minute with a serious arm injury.

A pair of Marty McKenzie penalty goals then put Taranaki ahead by six, before a Barrett three-pointer and Jack Stratton breakaway try saw the lead change hands.

The Bulls produced a gritty opening stanza against the Log o’ Wood holders and used a period of sustained pressure to edge back in front through hooker Rhys Marshall.

Canterbury skipper Luke Whitelock then restored his side’s lead with a try under the posts after some nice Barrett lead-up play in the 29th minute.

Bulls blindside Mitchell Brown was then sent to the bin for striking, but the yellow card seemed to galvanise the side.

No.8 Iopu Iopu-As collected a 38th minute scrum feed to stroll over and put Taranaki ahead 1817 at the break.

Canterbury came out for the second half rejuvenated and reclaimed the lead in the 45th minute when the exciting Barrett beat his man and went over.

The younger brother of All Blacks star Beauden then played the hero by knocking the ball out of Taranaki winger Declan O’Donnell’s hands as he looked to score.

McKenzie then hit a pair of penalties to level the scores, before Whitelock collected a scrum feed to put his side back in front in the to-and-fro affair.

A kick-chase try from substitute Richie Mo’unga then put some daylight between the sides, before a Bulls try to fullback Stephen Perofeta reduced the gap again.

Barrett then hit a penalty goal to push the lead out to 10, before a 78th-minute consolation try to Toa Halafihi gave Bulls fans a futile glimpse of victory.

Mid Canterbury’s senior team were not the only side in green

and gold to post an impressive victory on Saturday.

While the seniors dealt East Coast a 76-22 hiding, the Mid

Canterbury A team lifted the Hanan Cup after seeing off old rivals South Canterbury Development 21-20 in a thrilling en-

counter played in Timaru.

Fine ball retention and a solid defence saw Mid Canterbury A through to the razor-thin victory.

Plenty of questions for ABs

By GreGor paul An easy win (36-17) with moments of magic, but the All Blacks won’t leave Buenos Aires with the deep satisfaction that comes with a job well done.

They will look back and wonder where the second half went – why they drifted out of the game and couldn’t find any ways back in.

There’s enough realism within the group to know that there will be times in every test when they are under real and sustained pressure. It’s not sensible to believe otherwise or for them to fear those moments.

They need to experience adversity to grow their experience and the key is not avoiding it, but showing astute ways to deal with it and work through it.

That desired control and composure never really came through in a second half that was dominated by Argentina and it’s that which will be causing the most disappointment.

The All Blacks will also have a fairly harsh review of some of their micro skills and look at why two kickoffs were simply not dealt with and why their ball retention became as sloppy as it did.

That’s how it has to be for this team as they search for perfection.

PHOTO AP They can’t be happy just beating teams at the moment – even when they do it with plenty to spare.

Their whole quest is about playing at, or close to their potential and there’s no way they can say they did that for 80 minutes in Argentina.

Certain aspects they got right.

Their defensive linespeed and tackling intensity and accuracy was bang on in the first half.

After not getting that part right against the Pumas in Hamilton, that was obviously one of the key priorities second time round.

The All Blacks shifted fast and hard off the line, swarmed the Pumas and forced them to play progressively further behind the gainline.

Their scrummaging, when they had eight forwards on the pack, got a big tick as well.

The Pumas have added all sorts of thrills and spills to their game in recent seasons, but they still build everything from their scrum, still believe that is the epicentre of any contest and still know how to pack down and get a decent shove on.

The All Blacks took them on

and cracked them in the first half.

All good stuff – as were the individual performances of Anton Leinert-Brown and Patrick Tuipulotu. The former ran direct lines, kept things simple and played with his head up – aware of who was around him.

Tuipulotu produced the sort of athletic and muscular performance the coaching staff were after. He made some thumping tackles and clearly threw his considerable weight into the scrummaging effort.

The foundation was laid for the list of good to mount in the second half and for the performance to click into an even higher gear.

But instead the All Blacks lost their shape and dominance in nearly all aspects.

Their physicality and discipline slipped – they fell off tackles, left space to be exploited and Argentina were able to hold the ball for an age and play deep inside All Blacks territory.

They also became a little lazy in observing the offside line and left referee Jaco Peyper with no choice but to keep penalising them.

The All Blacks made it impossible for themselves to get their attacking game going in the second half and there’s just no way will they be able to get away with that in Durban.

Patrick Tuipulotu got through just his second full game for the All Blacks and his allround display will have raised a smile from the brains trust.

The big Auckland lock was industrious and effective, especially in the first spell, claiming an early lineout and making some jolting tackles.

He charged around the paddock like a man determined to show his wares after a frustrating 12 months out with injury.

Tuipulotu matched the early Pumas’ intensity and physicality and then some.

He gave the sort of performance the All Blacks have been waiting for and have known he can produce.

His efforts will give the selectors a pleasing headache as they contemplate their bench for Durban, should Sam Whitelock be reinstated, as expected.

Tuipulotu was unused in the first two Rugby Championship tests as they opted against including a lock on the pine, but now, after Luke Romano had usurped the No 3 locking position, Tuipulotu may just have done enough to nudge ahead of the Crusader.

He understandably tired in the second stanza, but still made a determined trysaving tackle on Nicolas Sanchez, for which he was unfairly scrutinised for foul play.

Anton Lienert-Brown was the revelation at centre.

We already knew he was good enough for test rugby, but he showed he is a viable alternative as either an All Black No 12 or 13 with an irresistible display both with and without the ball.

The Chief ran a good short line off Beauden Barrett to score his first test try, and then made the last pass to set up no less than three further tries, to Ryan Crotty, Ben Smith and Dane Coles.

This ALB effort shows he is a standout in higher company.

It is hard to recall him playing this well for the Chiefs, though we have always known he is a staunch defender.

His attacking game was reminiscent of his sparkling Junior World Championship semifinal in 2015 when he sliced up France.

So the selectors now know they can rely on him in two positions and doing a job from the get-go or off the bench.

Liam Squire had a quietish match on the blindside flank.

He made his tackles, but gave away some early penalties, and did not get his hands on the ball a lot.

One would think Jerome Kaino will not be flying halfway around the world to sit in the bench in Durban, so Squire’s best bet might be the No 20 jersey for the Springboks encounter. - NZME

Dimitrenko ‘outclassed’

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY Alexander Dimitrenko isn’t likely to receive much sympathy from the boxing authorities after protesting that he was hit while down by Joseph Parker on Saturday night.

Dimitrenko, dropped once in the first round and twice in the second, failed to get up midway through the third round after being hit by the New Zealand heavyweight while he had a knee on the canvas.

The Ukraine, who was outclassed by the impressive Parker throughout their short fight at Manukau’s Vodafone Events Centre, complained afterwards and said he would make an official protest, but WBO Australia representative Danny Leigh felt Parker had little to worry about.

“I watched the fight live and on a replay and it looked to me as if Dimitrenko copped a flogging and was looking for a way out,” Leigh said.

“I don’t think he fooled [referee] Marlon [Wright] in any way.

“In that regard I don’t see it as a controversy.

“If the fight had been a com-

petitive fight ... but it wasn’t like that.

“I saw it as a guy looking for a way out, he [referee] called him on it.

“The guy was rolling around like he was [a footballer] in a penalty box trying to get a penalty.”

Leigh attended the fight but wasn’t in a supervisory role and said he wasn’t speaking in an official role.

But in his opinion the fight, awarded to Parker

by TKO, a result which extends the heavyweight’s undefeated professional record to 21 victories, was clear-cut.

“He was bashed from pillar to post,” Leigh said of the 2.01m Dimitrenko.

“It wasn’t a competitive fight.

“I think a controversy would be the other way.

“I think we were

lucky to have a very competent and experienced professional, internationally, in there.

“A lesser referee might have been fooled.

“You can slow it down and ask did a punch land while he had a knee down, but in the heat of the moment he made the right decision.

“We were lucky to have Marlon in there.”

Wright, a Canadian, is a vastly experienced official, having refereed the recent Kell Brook v Gennedy Golovkin blockbuster in the United Kingdom.

“I back Marlon, the sole arbiter of the fight, and the way he called it,” Leigh said.

Parker, the WBO and IBF No1, remains on track for a big-money world title fight with the victory screened to 53 countries around the world.

He said immediately after the fight that he had trained for the grappling that Dimitrenko attempted and that he was unaware his opponent was on a knee when he hit him to the body with a powerful right hand for the last time.

Fan exchange fires up Rory McIlroy Rory McIlroy called for a foulmouthed fan to be ejected and found a potential long-term Ryder Cup partner in inspired rookie Thomas Pieters – but Europe’s bid for an historic victory suffered a setback at hostile Hazeltine.

After being whitewashed in Saturday’s opening session, Darren Clarke’s side hit back to win three of the afternoon fourballs and they maintained that momentum yesterday to win two and a half points from the morning foursomes.

McIlroy and Pieters, who was living up to his billing from Clarke as a future world No.1, then combined for nine birdies and an eagle to beat Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka and level the overall match score.

That left the holders trailing the Americans 9-1/2 to 6-1/2 heading into Sunday’s 12 singles matches and needing a comeback similar to the ‘Miracle of Medinah’ in 2012 to claim an unprecedented fourth straight win.

West Ham remain winless in five and in the bottom three on goal difference behind Swansea. Winless Sunderland moved off the bottom of the table with a 1-1 home draw against West Brom.

While McIlroy walked to the eighth tee a male spectator yelled “Suck a d*** Rory” directly at the Northern Irishman, according to a number of oncourse reporters who were following the match.

A video clip posted on Twitter showed McIlroy doubling back – with some fans urging him to carry on walking and others call-

ing for the offender to be kicked out – and confronting the man before then asking security to remove him.

“Someone just said a few derogatory things I thought were over the line,” McIlroy said after a third straight win alongside 24-year-old wild card Pieters.

“I tried to get him removed.

“I’m not sure if he was removed or not but these things happen.

“It is golf at the end of the day.

“You try to keep your utmost for who you are playing and for who you are supporting.

“That particular guy, who is obviously in a very, very, very small minority, just took it a bit too far.”

European vice-captain Ian Poulter wrote on Twitter: “The US players are policing the fans as they are embarrassed of there (sic) behavior. Shame some spoiling this ...”

Punters get it all wrong

Colts charge into contention The landscape for the opening classic of the season shifted on Saturday after two Gr.1 Sothys NZ 2000 Guineas-bound colts returned outstanding trials at different venues.

Firstly it was the turn at Riccarton of the Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained Hall Of Fame, who gave Michael McNab the easiest of rides on their way to victory in the Inglewood Stud Guineas Trial.

The son of Savabeel cruised home by three and a quarter lengths with a performance that saw his odds for the November 5 feature come in from $14 to $9.

“He’s a very smart colt and he’ll be ready for the 2000 Guineas,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis, who manages the ownership syndicate.

At Hastings, it was the Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs-prepared Mongolian Falcon who upstaged his rivals with a runaway victory in the Gr.2 Sacred Falls Hawke’s Bay Guineas.

The 1400 metre event had been widely billed as a match race between the unbeaten pair of Heroic Valour, a stablemate of Hall Of Fame, and Stephen Marsh’s Ugo Foscolo but it was the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industryowned son of Fastnet Rock who left them all in his wake.

“He was very happy in front and he kicked really well,” rider Leith Innes said.

Mongolian Falcon’s 2000 Guineas odds have been cut

Champion driver Maurice McKendry described Hughie Green’s return to racing at Alexandra Park on Friday night as “perfect.”

But while the Magic Man might have been happy with the nailbiting win remarkably plenty of punters weren’t after one of the strangest betting drifts in recent New Zealand pacing memory.

Hughie Green opened the $2.80 favourite last Thursday night for the $20,000 Spring Cup, which even then seemed overs considering this was the horse who pushed Have Faith In Me so close in last season’s Auckland Cup, beating home the likes of Smolda, Ohoka Punter and Tiger Tara.

But things got really strange in the hour before the race, with Hughie Green drifting wildly to start $4.10 on the tote, with Start Dreaming shortening into the clear favourite.

The latter had no luck so her run is best forgotten but the fact a horse who could rightly claim to be the North Island’s best pacer didn’t start favourite, especially after a sizzling last 400m when winning at the workouts the Saturday before, is an inexplicable punting oddity.

The punters who did stay strong had a nervous few moments at the top of the straight as Hughie Green lost momentum up the passing lane at the same moment the greatly-improved The Faithful shot clear.

But it was a sign of his class that the big fella was able to gather himself up and make up two lengths in the last 200m.

“It was a bit touch and go there but that was a perfect return. He didn’t have a hard run but he still go the win.”

Hughie Green wouldn’t be out of place in the NZ Cup but trainer Brian Hughes told HRNZ not only will he not head to the great race but that Cup week has been ruled out all together.

The 62-year wait is over for the Western Bulldogs, their premiership drought broken by one of the greatest grand finals in AFL history.

After five lead changes and constant high drama, the Bulldogs pulled away in the last quarter for a fairytale 22-point win on Saturday at the MCG. Bulldogs players, personnel and fans were in tears after the 13.11 (89) to 10.7 (67) triumph, which came just two years after the club was in disarray.

Renowned as western suburbs’ battlers, their only other flag was in 1954.

It is the third-longest wait for a premiership in history.

They are the first AFL team to win the flag from seventh place and it caps an amazing year where the Bulldogs have triumphed over a shocking run of injuries.

No injury was more devastating than the knee reconstruction after round three that ended captain Bob Murphy’s season.

Murphy was already a beloved figure at the Bulldogs and his off-field leadership since that cruel setback made him the inspirational figurehead of this premiership.

Coach Luke Beveridge called Murphy onto the stage after the match and handed him his Jock McHale medal as the premiership coach.

“This is yours mate – you deserve it more than anyone,” Beveridge said.

The flag is also a triumph for Beveridge, who is in only his second season as an AFL senior coach.

The Bulldogs were in freefall when Beveridge arrived at the club in late 2014, following the departures of his predecessor Brendan McCartney and captain Ryan Griffen.

It continues his Midas touch

– in the past 11 years, Beveridge has been part of seven premierships as coach of amateur team St Bede’s-Mentone, as an assistant at Collingwood and Hawthorn, and now at the Dogs.

Beveridge admitted to surprise that the Bulldogs had turned around their fortunes so emphatically in just two seasons.

He added that when their shocking run of injuries was at it height earlier this season, the team showed enormous faith.

“The probability at that time that we didn’t make it here was probably really high – say 90 per cent, maybe higher,” Beveridge said.

“So there’s a 10 per cent possibility that we get here – we were 100 per cent on the possibility.

“You have to stay glass halffull.”

It was appropriate that Jason Johannisen – another Bulldogs casualty earlier this year with a serious hamstring injury – won the Norm Smith Medal as best afield in the grand final.

Saturday’s win also capped a finals series where the Bulldogs upset West Coast in Perth, ended Hawthorn’s premiership reign and then upset the Giants in Sydney.

Fans taunt Willett American fans made Danny Willett pay for his brother’s midweek rant when they booed the Masters champion on to the first tee during his Ryder Cup debut, paving the way for a stream of taunts. Willett was forced to apologise after his journalist sibling Pete hit out at the Hazeltine National crowd, saying Europe needed “to silence the pudgy, basement-dwelling, irritants, stuffed on cookie dough and pissy beer”.

When Willett missed a putt on the fourth green, one fan shouted at the top of his voice “why don’t you get your brother to play it for you?”

London Former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp has reportedly claimed some of his players bet on one of their matches. Redknapp was filmed by undercover Daily Telegraph reporters discussing a match in which his players allegedly bet on themselves to win, while one of them allegedly told a football agent to “remortgage your house” because the odds were favourable. Football Association rules prohibit players from betting on games they take part in and managers are supposed to report misconduct to the FA.

The 2016 Peak to Pub proved a resounding success on Saturday with more than 350 participants setting an entries record for the iconic race.

Fine weather also played its part as competitors began the 2016 event with a 100m run to their skis and snowboards before tackling a 2km giant slalom style course.

A lung-busting 18km bike ride followed before race participants pounded the road for a 12km run which finished back at the Blue Pub in Meth-

ven for a well-earned rest.

This year’s Peak to Pub held up tradition with competitors having a choice of three obstacles, a slip and slide, a hay bale climb or a cargo net snow crawl to negotiate at the finish.

The Individual Mens’ winner was Flavio Vianna of Christchurch.

Vianna recorded a time of 1.12.39secs, which was more than eight minutes quicker than his nearest rival Steven Melton (1.20.49secs), while Henry Buckingham rounded out the top three in 1.22.34secs.

“Mt Hutt would like to extend a huge thank you and congratulations to everyone who participated in this year’s competition.”
