The Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust is having to hire a part-time manager to deal with an increase in calls from the rural community, and banks concerned about clients, in the wake of the dairy downturn and dry conditions. Sue Baird has volunteered for the trust for more than 20 years alongside husband Allan, but has now been employed to work one day a week to help dispatch what’s needed to those farmers facing challenging times. Mrs Baird said there had been an increase in calls in past weeks, particularly in the past five days where they had received a call a day as dry conditions begin to exert more pressure on the

farming community. “There’s a bit of pressure starting to come on and obviously heading into another dry spell alongside the general downturn in profitability is not helping – and it’s putting people under an awful lot of pressure. It’s only natural that some of them will start to struggle to deal with it all.” Mrs Baird said problems were not just financial with some farmers “really pushing themselves” but said local banks had been sympathetic to customers. “The banks are trying really hard to work with farmers to make sure the financial burden doesn’t get to a point where it’s not viable anymore.” Over 50 per cent of calls related to
