Motorcyclist dies in Tinwald crash

A motorcyclist has died following a crash involving a milk tanker in Tinwald yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were alerted to the collision just before 2pm and the crash temporarily closed a section of State Highway 1.

The motorcyclist was transported to Ashburton Hospital by St John Ambulance Services where the person was to be stabilised before being moved to Christchurch Hospital.

Ashburton Police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said the motorcyclist was travelling south on State Highway 1 when the collision with the truck, which was leaving the saleyards, occurred.

Banfield said the motorcycle hit the coupling bar between the truck’s two trailers and burst into flames.

One fire engine and crew from the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the scene and extinguished the blaze.

Banfield said the Serious Crash Unit attended the scene and remained onsite

for a number of hours. The Police Commercial Vehicle Unit also attended.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said detours remained in place until 7pm.

The detour route took northbound drivers on to Winslow-Westerfield Road, Maronan Road, Melcombe Street and Laghmor Road before re-joining State Highway 1.

Southbound drivers were directed on to Hassal Street, Boundary Road, Longbeach Road, Winslow-Willowby Road and then back on to the highway.

Consent numbers down; values hold steady

With two months still to run, building consents have been issued for almost $134 million worth of building work in the Ashburton District.

To the end of October, 971 consents had been issued by the Ashburton District Council and while numbers were down 12 per cent on the same time last year when 1106 consents had been issued, the value of those consents had remained steady, said council building services manager Michael Wong.

Consents had been lodged for some quite significant commercial work including extensions to a motel, a new single level building on a cleared site on the corner of Tancred Street and State Highway One, extensions to the Electraserve building in Mona Square,

a lodge in the Tinwald Domain and $1 million worth of work on stage three of the goat milk plant at the North East business estate, Wong said.

The greatest contributor to the drop in consent numbers has been dwellings, with 143 issued to date this year compared to 185 for the same period last year, a 22 per cent decrease.

Values are also down for dwellings, from $67.8 million to October 31 last year to $51.7 million this year.

That gap could narrow as the year winds up, Wong said, as there was a large number of dwelling consents being lodged with some significant numbers attached.

“The numbers might be down, but the projects are bigger.”

There were also a considerable number of commercial consents in the pipeline, he said.

Hotline for Watson info Scott Watson supporters have launched an 0800 number for information on the high-profile double murder of which he was convicted almost 20 years ago.

Watson has been behind bars since he was convicted in 1999 of killing Ben Smart and Olivia Hope, who disappeared after boarding a yacht in the Marlborough Sounds early on New Year’s Day 1998.

Police said the yacht was Watson’s sloop, others claim it was a mystery ketch and Watson is in-

nocent. Free Scott Watson Campaign member Aaron Goodwin said the hotline – 0800 379 111 – was set up to allow the public a chance to come forward with information on the disappearance of Smart and Hope.

“Scott Watson supporters have always maintained there are people out there who have information and haven’t come forward.”

College now has alumni

It’s been 50 years in the making, but like all good things, the birth of the Ashburton College alumni has taken time.

But its time has arrived and on Monday night a present day Ashburton College Year 13 student will walk on stage at the school’s award’s ceremony and receive a $1000 scholarship signalling the birth of the new exstudents’ association.

The NBS Ashburton College Alumni scholarship will be awarded to a Year 13 student who has shown commitment to the college throughout their education.

A group of past pupils have driven the establishment of the alumni, but it is one of the newest arrivals on the district’s finance scene, NBS Ashburton that has stepped up and funded the scholarship.

NBS manager Rod Fox said he was delighted to take the opportunity to sponsor the scholarship.

He’s a strong believer in keeping ties with the past.

“Most of your memories are made up from college, the friends you made then; it’s an integral part of your life,” he said.

The birth of the alumni come after a long gestation, committee chairman Alister Argyle said.

“It’s been long overdue and I guess last year’s 50th was a catalyst,” he said.

Forming the organisation had been a 12-month project and while the first scholarship will be awarded on Monday night, the association will become public property when its website is launched on November 30. From this date past students will be able to register online.

As well as being a virtual meeting place for former students, the website will also provide upto-date information about the college and campus life today.

The website will be a blending of the past and the present.

Having departing college students sign up would be critical

in starting the alumni network but its success would also be counted in attracting past students to add their names to the membership list, Argyle said.

The website would provide a way to reconnect with people from the past as well as ensuring they were kept up to date with the college of today, he said.

In the future, committee member Alister Lilley, said he could see the alumni becoming a vehicle through which past students could make donations or bequests to the college.

“We need a strong college with a strong infrastructure and it means in time the alumni might be able to bridge some gaps with funds. We’re taking a long-term view with this,” he said.

While it will be called the Ashburton College Alumni it will also include past pupils of both Ashburton High School and Hakatere College, the college’s two founding schools.

As well as past students, the alumni is open to past staff from the three schools.

Vandals target vehicles

A night of “thuggery” across Ashburton has left a number of residents and businesses out of pocket.

Private cars on Creek Road in Allenton and a number of buses in the Pearsons Coachlines yard had windows smashed on Tuesday night.

Ashburton Police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said they had received reports of seven cars along Creek Road and six buses in the Pearsons Coachlines yard on West Street having windows

smashed. He said officers who attended the scenes strongly suspected that youths were involved in the vandalism and as of yesterday afternoon inquiries were still continuing.

“I remind these offenders that they are offending against the same community that provides them with support when they need it and often a place to live.

“The community are rapidly losing patience with this type of offending.

“It is my view that when apprehended these offenders should be held in custody to prevent fur-

ther offending and give the Ashburton community a well-earned rest,” Banfield said.

Pearsons Coachlines Ashburton manager Mark Cook said the vandalism was just senseless damage to the community.

Pearsons provides buses for school routes and Cook said fortunately they did not have any problems transporting the students on Wednesday morning.

“It’s expensive and it’s just a bit senseless.

“I can’t see what kicks people would get out of it, it’s just thuggery,” he said.

Cook said at the end of the day it was the community that suffered as Pearsons provided a lot of funding and sponsorship within Ashburton.

“Insurances covers us for the windows but we’ve still got to pay out the excess which comes out of money we would otherwise spend on the community,” he said.

Ashburton police want to hear from anyone who has information that can identify the offenders. Information can be made anonymously through Crimestoppers.

Pair ready to lead their school

Mount Hutt College’s newly elected head boy and girl can’t wait to give back to the school next year.

The Year 12 students, Aleks Small and Erana Te Moanonui, were publicly announced yesterday as head boy and girl and are eager to get started.

“I thought they were joking,” said Te Moananui when told she had been chosen to fill the head girl position.

Te Moananui looked up to previous head girls and hopes she can live up to the high standards set by her predecessors.

When the new students arrive next year, Te Moananui hopes the newly appointed duo can fill a similar role.

Small is also excited and insisted that he will make the most of his time as head boy.

Small credited Mount Hutt College for the positive role it has played in his development, while college principal John Schreurs said the 18 students that put their names forward for prefect roles were all “fantastic”.

Hotter than average temperatures can be expected across the entire country over the next three months – but the warm won’t come without the wet.

That’s according to the latest climate outlook from the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (Niwa), released yesterday.

“The executive summary is this – the next three months look warmer than average for the entire country in terms of air temperature,” Niwa meteorologist Chris Brandolino said. ‘“It doesn’t mean there won’t be cold snaps and periods of cool weather – that’s going to happen – but that’s the flavour between now and the end of January.”

International guidance slightly favoured La Nina conditions over the period, although neutral conditions in the tropics were now much more likely than La Nina by February.

Despite the current borderline La Nina conditions – and the only modest probability for La Nina to develop by the end of the year – the circulation pattern expected over the coming three months for New Zealand was broadly consistent with the typical signature of the system.

These included higher pressures than normal forecast to the south and southeast of the country, while lower pressures than normal were forecast to the north, leading to more persistent easterly or northeasterly airflow than normal.

“If that were to materialise as we’ve advised, areas like the north of the North Island the east of the North Island run a risk for higher than normal rainfall for the next three months,” Brandolino said.

“In other words, a drier than normal November to January period is very unlikely - only a 20 per cent chance of that scenario is expected.”

A heritage education initiative that has been an out of the classroom resource for Ashburton schools has been handed a last minute financial lifeline.

The programme, run by the South Canterbury Museum sees four part time staff work across North Otago and Mid and South Canterbury teaching students about their local heritage and it’s a programme that’s highly valued locally says Ashburton Heritage Centre manager Tanya Robinson.

For schools the programme meant the museum could become an out-of-the-classroom learning resource using expert heritage specialists as tutors, she said.

“We’re incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity as it enables children to come into the museum and get a curriculum linked programme that’s designed to meet the needs of the schools.”

About 135 five to 13-year-olds entered the annual Ashburton Art Gallery Christmas card design competition. Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel this week presented overall winner Luke Rhodes, 8, of Ashburton, and people’s choice winner Sarah Chapman, 10, of Christchurch, with their awards. Favel was the judge, and was taken by Luke’s creativity in his design of the Rakaia salmon decorated in a range of adornments including candy canes, a star and presents. She said the card would be the Ashburton District Council’s official Christmas card for 2016, and as such one may even be sent to Prime Minister John Key. This saw a surprised Luke later comment “that would be like the best moment of my life”.

Sarah’s design was a Christmasthemed landscape featuring the scenic Tinwald Domain bridge.

“Because I thought the bridge looked really pretty,” she said.

While the heritage programme was well used by some schools, Robinson said there was capacity to grow it to bring more schools on the books because the museum was a valuable learning resource that was available to all schools as part of their curriculum.

“I’m not sure all schools know how valuable a resource this is. It puts experts in front of the kids and they’re really lively teachers, not just experts,’ she said.

Initially funding for the programme looked unlikely but last week the Ministry of Education confirmed it would continue to back the project, although to a lesser amount.

And while that was disappointing, the most important thing was that the project would continue, Robinson said.

“We were really concerned it might not be delivered in the region so we’ll be doing our best to cover the shortfall through sponsorship.”

in landmark decision A former soldier who suffered post-traumatic stress after witnessing fatal rocket attacks and explosions while serving in Afghanistan has been awarded compensation.

In the landmark decision, Judge Maclean at the Wellington District Court has ruled the man is covered

by ACC, owing to a series of events that left him traumatised from his 2009 tour.

One of the lawyers for the soldier, whose name is suppressed, John Miller said it’s unfortunate both ACC and the Defence Force attempted to block compensation, by arguing the legislation only provides for trauma stemming from a single event.

He said it’s ridiculous to ar-

gue that it’s a pity there were two attacks instead of just the one - and that if he’d only witnessed one horror he’d be covered.

Miller said it was clear that’s not in the spirit of the law He said there was room in the legislation to cover a series of events that come from the same cause.

He said mental injury is a difficult claim to make?

New Zealand First defence spokesman Ron Mark said the law clearly needs to v change.

He said all service personnel know they can expect to be put through multiple incidents of trauma, and that there will be a compound effect from that.

A man has died after fire raced through a block of flats in Invercargill yesterday. Emergency services were called to a block of five flats on Tramway Way which were all ablaze just after 1am yesterday. Most of the occupants escaped, however the body of a man was later discovered in one of the units. The Fire Service’s Southland assistant area commander, Deane Chalmers, said when crews arrived at the scene two of the double-storey flats were engulfed by flames. The fire had started to spread through the roof to adjoining flats. Two units had been completely destroyed by the fire. Police are now trying to identify the man and locate his next-of-kin. A police spokeswoman said the cause of the blaze was not known at this stage.

Medical responsibility Parliament has passed law changes that allow nurses and pharmacists to carry out some of the functions currently restricted to doctors.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says that means more timely care closer to home, particularly in rural areas. Nurse practitioners and pharmacists will be able to prescribe drugs to treat addiction.

Nurses and physiotherapists will be able to sign sick leave certificates.

Nurse practitioners providing care for a patient who dies will be able to certify the cause of death. “This change is especially important in rural areas and aged-care services and will help prevent unnecessary delays for families,” Dr Coleman said.

Baring Square – neglected and unloved

Baring Square east, once the pride and joy of Ashburton, is now an unsightly, untidy, overgrown mess.

And no-one’s unhappier about that than the man responsible for keeping the Ashburton District neat and tidy, Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin.

Several Guardian readers have phoned concerned that what has traditionally been one of the town’s most picturesque spots is now an eyesore.

Its condition has come about through a combination of factors – a lack of staff, undergrounding work that’s about to start for new lights and problems with irrigation systems.

“I’m embarrassed about this too. We’re well down on resources and I’m looking at the challenges we have in the future. I know it’s one of our signature gardens, but there’s underground wiring to go in over the next two weeks so that’s why there hasn’t been any plantings,” Askin said.

He’s keen to restore the square to its former glory and said while he’s unhappy that complaints are being made, he believes those complaints indicate that people are concerned about the town’s

That the town’s centre square is currently a mess has disappointed Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel.

She has also fielded complaints from residents and has heard negative comments from overseas visitors. Baring Square was the heart of the town and it needed to be an attractive place rather than an eyesore, she said.

“Personally, I love Baring Square. When my husband and I were at college, I walked from Tinwald and he walked from Hampstead and we met in Baring Square and we were married in Baring Square. It’s a special place to me.”

The district’s parks, gardens and reserve areas have always achieved a high rating in resident surveys.

What does a Lotto winner look like?

A married man in his 30s with children is the profile of the most typical Lotto winner.

Lotto released statistics yesterday to reveal what a typical winner looks like ahead of last night’s $34 million Powerball jackpot draw. Powerball was first introduced in 2001.

When it comes to the battle of the sexes, 92 per cent of the big winners are male. But it’s a family syndicate of three generations of women who can claim the title of New Zealand’s largest-ever winners after winning $36.8 million with Big Wednesday in 2009.

Lotto spokeswoman Emilia Mazur said they sourced the data from the dozen winners who took home prizes of over $20 million.

“We decided to take a behindthe-scenes look at New Zealand’s biggest winners to see if we can paint a picture of a ‘typical’ winner”.

While 75 per cent of the winners call the North Island home, it’s a South Island family that claimed this year’s largest prize so far.

over $22 million in April.

Winners were just as likely to be married as they were unmarried, with a 50 per cent split. But 83 per cent had children and helping family was a top priority for all of the big winners. They often gifted houses, cars and holidays to their nearest and dearest.

A big win can happen at any time of life, with ages spanning from 19 to in their 80s. The majority of winners were in their 30s with 25 per cent fitting into that age bracket.

Mazur said while the big winners have some things in common, this doesn’t influence who

could win the next jackpot.

“It doesn’t matter who you are or where you live – every player has exactly the same chance of becoming our next big winner.”

Police cost recovery a ‘slippery slope’ A law change to allow police to recover the cost of vetting services is a “slippery slope” to other “core services” being charged for, Labour says.

Legislation that passed its third and final reading Tuesday night has cleared the way for police to recover costs for certain “demand” services, including the 500,000 security vetting applications received each year.

The fee for each application will be $8.50, which the Government says is much lower than overseas charging, which is more than $50 in Australia.

There will also be exemptions for agencies making 20 or fewer vetting request per year and for charities.

Fees can also be waived for agencies facing extreme hardship or in cases of exceptional circumstances.

Labour, the Greens and NZ First opposed the bill.

Labour MP Poto Williams said it was her party’s firm view that vetting was a core service of police. The Government needed to increase funding to police so they could comfortably cope with vetting requests, she said.

“We feel that police vetting is like the first line of defence ... we are also sad that this does lead us down the slippery slope of being able to charge for other activities within the police range of activities. And that is not appropriate.”

Police Minister Judith Collins said New Zealand Police was one of the few police services in the world that could not claw back some costs.

The vetting service faced skyrocketing demand, she said, that had increased by more than 100,000 vets per year since 2012/13. That growth was forecast to continue.

The law change will allow police to recover more than $3 million each year.

The reshuffles came as prosecutors are investigating whether a personal friend of Park’s with no government job used her ties with the president to pull government strings from the shadows and pushed businesses to donate money to foundations she controlled.

Prosecutors are expected to seek an arrest warrant for the friend, Choi Soon-sil.

Park acknowledged last week Choi had edited some of her speeches and provided public relations help.

On Monday, police detained

a man who rammed a large excavator into a gate near the office where prosecutors questioned Choi. He said he tried to meet Choi and help her die because she told reporters she “committed a sin that deserves death” before prosecutors began questioning her.

Choi has been close to Park since Choi’s father, the leader of a religious cult, gained Park’s trust by reportedly convincing her that he could communicate with her assassinated mother. Choi’s father denied that in a 1990 media interview.

Park has already long been criticised for an aloof manner and for relying on only a few longtime confidantes.

That she may have been outsourcing sensitive decisions to someone outside of government, and someone connected with a murky, lurid back story, has incensed many.

No-one at controls before plane crash

Bad news for bird brains

A fresh analysis of the final moments of doomed Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 suggests no one was controlling the plane when it plane plunged into the ocean.

The new analysis comes in a technical report released Wednesday by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. The report seems to support the theory investigators have long favoured — that no one was at the controls of the Boeing 777 when it ran out of fuel and plunged at high speed into a remote stretch of the Indian Ocean off Australia’s west coast in 2014.

In recent months, critics have increasingly been pushing the alternate theory that someone was still controlling the plane at the end of its flight. If that was the case, the aircraft could have glided much farther.

Bird-brains at the small end of the scale stand a greater chance of being shot, a study has found.

Scientists found a strong correlation between the size of birds’ brains and the likelihood of them being killed by human hunters.

The team speculates that shooting enthusiasts could be having a Darwinistic effect on bird evolution.

According to the theory, hunted species should become bigger-brained, smarter and better able to escape the guns than protected species.

Each year, many millions of mammals and birds are killed for sport.

The aim of the research was to see if there was any evidence that having a bigger brain contributed to

survival among hunted species.

Analysis of a large Danish database of birds showed a 30-fold difference in risk of getting shot associated with an almost 87-fold difference in brain mass.

The chances of being shot fell from 29 per cent in birds with brains weighing an average of 0.23g to just 1 per cent in birds with a brain mass of just under 20g.

Larger body size also increased the likelihood of being shot, but this was accounted for by the researchers.

The scientists, led by Dr Anders Moller, from the University of South Paris, France, wrote in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters: “The findings reported here have a number of im-

plications for studies of brain size.

“First, hunted and protected populations of the same species should differ in brain mass with the former having larger brains.

“Second, we also hypothesise that if there are costs associated with an increase of brain size in hunted species, such as increased metabolic costs or increased use of antioxidants during brain development, this could potentially change the bias in brain mass in hunted compared to protected species.

“In conclusion, hunting selects for increased brain mass in birds, and this effect is independent of a number of potentially confounding variables, such as age, body condition, sex and body mass.”

ritish and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland has criticised New Zealand media and rugby fans for their arrogant behaviour following the All Blacks’ victory over the Wallabies and record 18th successive test win.

Gatland, who will lead the Lions on their tour of New Zealand next year, believes the behaviour of sections of the media and supporters made him feel embarrassed.

He was on scouting duty at Eden Park ahead of next year’s tour and felt the treatment of controversial first five Quade Cooper and the mockery of Wallabies coach Michael Cheika was unacceptable.

Particularly NZME’s decision to publish a caricature of Cheika dressed as a clown, accompanied by the headline ‘Send in the Clowns’ on the morning of the 37-10 victory.

“You can be proud but you’ve still got to show humility and respect”, Gatland said.

“In the past New Zealanders have prided ourselves on that and been humble about the success of the rugby team.

“It was the first time that I’ve sat there and thought, ‘we’re better than this’.”

Gatland’s assessment of the average Kiwi rugby punter and the media’s reaction to downing the old enemy and setting a new record is pretty damning – particularly coming from a New Zealander.

But then, he offers an interesting and unique perspective having spent a significant amount of time coaching away from New Zealand.

And it’s something we should be vigilant of across all codes.

We all remember Black Cap Grant Elliott receiving a parting shot from Brad Haddin after being dismissed in the 2015 Cricket World Cup final.

In contrast, after posting 84 not out, punctuated by a six off the penultimate ball as the Black Caps secured a place in that final, Elliot’s response was to extend his hand to South African Dale Steyn – the bowler laid out in despair on the pitch.

It was a touching moment and a perfect example of what New Zealand’s approach to sport has and always should be.

There’s one thing worse than a bad loser and that’s a bad winner.

Tight labour market fails to lift wages

Many Dick Smith stores re-tenanted Nearly half of the stores left vacant when Dick Smith collapsed have found new tenants, but provincial high streets will have to put up with vacant shop fronts at least a little longer.

The electronics retailer went into receivership earlier this year amid a sales slump that left it with a mountain of excess stock that had to be heavily discounted in the lead-up to Christmas.

390 stores in New Zealand and Australia were forced to close.

Commercial real estate company Colliers International said nearly half of the 62 stores that closed in New Zealand had now been re-leased.

Its national director of retail, Leroy Wolland, said the new tenants were predominantly big brands including Noel Leeming, PB Tech, Bed Bath & Beyond, Lighting Plus, the Golf Warehouse and the Clearance Shed. A number

of stores had been rented to new Australian pet retailer Petstock.

Most of these stores were in major cities, while it was proving more difficult to find tenants in the provinces.

“Ex Dick Smith’s stores in locations like Levin, Gisborne, Richmond and Wanganui are still empty,” Wolland said. “Although the

former Dick Smith stores are typically in the best retail locations in these markets, the issue is around the lack of demand from national brands to enter these smaller cities and towns.”

Bigger brands’ hesitancy to move into these locations meant they would likely be filled by local retailers, he said.

Cavalier Corp said 2017 earnings may fall as much as 52 per cent as the carpet maker incurs one-time costs to consolidate its manufacturing operations.

A tighter New Zealand labour market hasn’t managed to spur higher wages, even as jobs growth outstrips an expanding population and as firms find it increasingly difficult to find new staff.

The private sector component of the labour cost index, which measures wage inflation, rose 0.4 per cent in the three months ended September 30, and was up 1.6 per cent from a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said.

That was in line with expectations and unchanged from the previous period, even though the unemployment rate fell to 4.9 per cent and quarterly jobs growth of 1.4 per cent outpaced both expectations and a 0.7 per cent increase in the size of the workingage population.

“The New Zealand labour market is tight, and tightening, and with hiring intentions still so high we wonder where the labour is going to come from to meet New Zealand business needs,” Bank of New Zealand head of research Stephen Toplis said in a note.

“Be that as it may, and whatever the tightness in the labour market might be, it is simply not

Silage making in full swing

Mid Canterbury farmers are flat out making silage on the back of good early spring growth.

The mild temperatures and timely rainfall has also meant many farmers have not yet turned on their irrigators.

“It has been a really good spring,” Federated Farmers junior vice president David Clark said.

“The crops look really well at the moment but as we know, it is not a good harvest until it is in the can.”

About 60mm of rain fell in Ashburton last month, more in the foothills, and farmers have also resisted irrigating knowing some groundwater wells are at very low levels.

Clark said the rain had eased some of the pressure on wells, and on farmers with adaptive management conditions whose seasonal allocations were based on well levels.

Environment Canterbury said

68 per cent of wells monitored in the region had low groundwater levels and 16 per cent very low.

Low levels were across the region but very low levels had been noted in the Ashburton plains area.

Although the monitor well levels were low compared to previous Septembers, more than half had higher levels than the previous month.

Just 20.5mm of rain fell in Ashburton during September but the October boost means rainfall for the year to date is around 490mm.

About 11mm fell last weekend.

Clark said he had not yet turned on his irrigator. “We know our groundwater levels are very, very low. I am reluctant to start early and toughening the crops up a bit so they develop a deeper root structure in the expectation we might struggle later in the growing season.”

The MetService said frequent lows all last month meant rain for most of New Zealand.

“Canterbury and Marlborough picked up significant totals during October, with 50-80mm of rainfall commonly recorded in these regions,” meteorologist Georgina Griffiths said.

The first half of the month ran unusually warm across the country, but finished with a cooler southerly regime. However, October as a whole ended up on the warm side of the ledger.

La Nina-like patterns are currently observed in the tropical Pacific Ocean. However, the influence from the tropics is likely to be minimal in New Zealand in the short-term. “The Tasman Sea has been driving most of our weather lately, and this pattern is forecast to continue into November,” she said.

“A mixture of low pressures and westerly winds is expected to prevail over New Zealand during November.”

Temperatures are expected to be variable during November.

Dairy chequebooks still tucked away Mid Canterbury dairy farmers won’t be reaching for the chequebook in spite of product prices climbing at the most recent Global Dairy Trade auction, says local Federated Farmers dairy chairman Nathan Currie.

Prices rose for the sixth time in seven auctions, bolstered by a jump in whole milk powder amid lower supply.

Currie said the price rise was light at the end of the tunnel for dairy farmers who had had a tough couple of years with low milk payouts, but no-one would be spending any more than they had to.

“We have been down this path before with good lifts in the Global Dairy Trade but that doesn’t necessarily translate to a higher payout at the end of the season.”

Currie said the upward movement was positive and showed signs of achieving balance between supply and demand.

Farmers would wait until the end of the season before looking at budgets. “Everyone is farming as efficiently as we can.”

27,735 tonnes of product was sold, down from 31,525 tonnes at the previous auction.

Whole milk powder soared 19.8 per cent to $US3317 a tonne.

Last week Fonterra said it reduced its forecast milk volume for the 2016-17 season in New Zealand to 1460 million kilogram of milk solids, 6.8 per cent below the volume collected last season, AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby said in a note.

“Dairy markets reacted sharply to tightening milk supply in New Zealand,” Kilsby said. “This positive GDT result will put upward pressure on milk price forecasts.”

At the latest GDT auction, skim milk powder rallied 6.5 per cent to $US2329 a tonne, while butter gained 4 per cent to $US4146 a tonne.

Anhydrous milk fat increased 2.6 per cent to $US5146 a tonne, while cheddar added 0.9 per cent to $US3332 a tonne.

Meanwhile, lactose dropped 4.0 per cent to $US755 a tonne, while rennet casein fell 4.8 per cent to $US6025 a tonne, and butter milk powder declined 5.4 per cent to $US2248 a tonne.

Experienced farmers also at risk WorkSafe’s data from 2015 shows that experienced farmers carrying out routine jobs with vehicles are getting caught out.

In 2015, there were 19 fatalities on farms – 16 of those involved vehicles. In half of the incidents, farmers were aged over 55 and driving vehicles on sloping or uneven ground.

The release of the data comes six weeks after a 50-year-old Mid Canterbury man died when the quad bike he was driving crashed into a fence on a farm near Mt Hutt. WorkSafe has referred his death to the coroner.

WorkSafe’s agricultural programme manager said the new data showed ma-

ture and experienced people doing jobs they had done many times were involved.

“Examining vehicle fatalities from the last three years, we find that often the driver/rider had set out to do a fairly routine task like spraying or stock work.”

The incidents had some common factors like operators or others being hit by the vehicle, or being killed during a rollover.

“To keep yourself safe make sure the vehicle won’t move when you get out, and wear seatbelts when in the cab or roll frame. Extra care is needed when working on or near slopes, especially on tracks with steep drop-offs.”

Age Concern Ashburton Age Concern’s Confident Driving Course on Friday November 4 is not completely filled, and we are able to take registrations until 2.30pm today, Thursday 3. The course is held at the Seniors Centre, 206 Cameron Street from 9.30am – 2.45pm with a $5 contribution towards lunch. Various aspects of driving challenges and changes to Road Rules are included in the presentation and there is ample opportunity for both questions and discussion. All enquiries are welcomed at Age Concern’s Office on 3086817.

Age Concern’s 50+ with Rosa Bennett has completed its second programme for the year and we thank Rosa most sincerely for her enthusiasm and commitment to this project.

A number of Age Concern’s 206 members recently had the opportunity to travel to Wellington to meet with Billie Jordan and her Hip Hoperation team. Accompanied by Mary Harrison, Moyra Whiting and Jeanette Tarbotton they enjoyed a totally different experience.

Core services offered by Age Concern continue to attract a good response – Steady As You Go Fall Prevention classes with Dianne Moss coordinating, the Ladies Exercise class with Frank Connolly, Courtesy Drivers, Total Mobility Assessment, Gardeners and Advocacy. The Age Concern Committee look forward to hosting members to the annual Christmas celebration on Friday December 9, 2-4pm at the Seniors Centre.

Allenton Bowling Club Good morning bowlers.

Our season’s championships are well under way and participants are really trying to get games completed well done. We have had some in house tournaments which have been well supported by all and the Cartwright Cup is to be played today Triples, come and have a look if you are contemplating playing bowls. You will see the friendship and great spirit in which bowls are played.

We also have teams in Ladies 5s and Rowntree Canterbury Competitions and mixed teams in the Canterbury 7s. So far so good and all teams on track. Show day we are having a morning tourney with BBQ etc to follow and then a fun afternoon watching races with all sorts of activities.

Christmas luncheon this year has been arranged for Wednesday November 23 at the Savage Club Rooms and a very warm welcome is extended to all members. Speaker today was Christine Richards, District Co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Support. There are 325 groups in our district plus 58 rural groups so Christine must be very busy in the 22 hours per week she is allotted.

She stressed the importance of getting to know our neighbours and of building and maintaining relationships which is made more difficult with such a fluid shifting of population these days. Christine gave advice on how people who live along or are elderly can help protect themselves and feel safe. This generated much discussion at the end of Christine’s talk with everyone gaining valuable insights. Peter Rollinson thanked Christine and presented her with a fruit tray. Afternoon tea followed with much talk and laughter to round off a very enjoyable afternoon.

Ashburton Chess Club Five members of the Ashburton Chess Club, now in recess travelled to play North Canterbury in Rangiora on Sunday, Ashburton had a convincing win with 19 1/2 pts to 5 1/2 after losing most of the previous encounters.

V. Barbu pulled off a mate in the last seconds after being under pressure for most of the game to give him a total of five wins. K. Pow 4 1/2 pts very credible performance. J. Guo with 4 pts, S. Bennet and R. Keeling the old timers were happy with 3pts each. A great day.

Ashburton County Lions Club The October meeting of the Ashburton County Lions Club was held on Wednesday the 26th at the Hotel Ashburton.

Members listened to a very enjoyable and educational address by Bernice Mara the Health Services Manager at the Ashburton Hospital.

Bernice spoke about her background working in health services in the North Island that lead up to her taking on her present role in Ashburton a year ago. She then explained the importance of developing strong connections within the CDHB as well as with local GPs and pharmacies. She helped us develop a better understanding of how the new buildings and systems will work to create an improved service for locals.

Bernice also spoke about the recently announced “Rural Health Academic Centre” a training programme for doctors and nurses and the exciting opportunities this presents for the future of the Ashburton Hospital.

The meeting then moved on to the organisation of several small fundraising and social events coming up over the next month.

Plans are also well underway for our big end of year event ‘Toot for Tucker’ and the team is working hard co-ordinating publicity, supporting groups and the ‘on the night’ organisation.

The evening concluded with drawing of

the raffle and more humorous story- telling and fines imposed by the tail twisters.

Ashburton Golf Club A great weekend just gone at the club, Matt held a wonderful tourney last Saturday, with John Power and Barry Jury shooting the lights out on the course to pick up some super prizes. Then on Sunday we hosted the County stroke, a beautiful day and the course was in wonderful condition, some good golf was played, and a well done to the boys and girls from Tinwald for picking up the Mayors Cup. Nicky Gill did the Ashburton club proud by picking up the best individual score, and a great day was had by all.

This Saturday we have the annual Captain versus President match play games. Now I didn’t fancy my chances of taking on Knocker, so I am going away for a jolly boys week in Wellington, and have brought in super sub George Brown to carry the Captains mantle. So if you are on a good hot streak in your golf scores at present, get on down the course on Saturday and tie your flag to the captains mast. Likewise, if the game is a struggle and you’re not playing that good, driving wide or putting short, don’t worry, just drag yourself down and talk to Neil.

Notes for the chaps, the match committee needs you, we are in need of new blood to move this committee forward, please have a long hard look, and see if you can help out your club. It will only take about 1 evening per month.

Ashburton Hearing Association Recently members of the Ashburton Hearing Association went on their second bus

trip for the year and ventured into the Hororata area, to visit two historic properties.

First stop Terrace Station homestead which was the home of Sir John Hall, Premier of New Zealand between 1879 and 1882 and later Mayor of Christchurch. He was an early environmentalist and a supporter of Women’s suffrage.

Parts of the house date from the mid1850s and it has the distinction of continuous occupation by members of the same family since pioneering times.

While we enjoyed morning tea Kate Foster, who is a descendant of Sir John and Lady Rose Hall, provided an interesting history of her family and the property.

We were able to look at parts of the homestead, including Sir John Hall’s office and the delightful “children’s room” which features toys and games, some as old as 200 years, which have been played with by four generations of Hall youngsters.

After leaving Terrace Station we had a picnic lunch in the Hororata Domain before proceeding to “Gunyah”. Occupying land which was once part of Terrace Station, Gunyah was built for Sir John Hall’s son Wilfred and his family in 1912.

Current owner Simonetta Ferrari, fascinated us by sharing her extensive knowledge of Gunyah and the life and times of its original occupants.

We were able to have access to downstairs rooms and look around the lovely grounds.

Ashburton Ladies Probus Club At the October meeting of the Ashburton Ladies Probus Club, the meeting was chaired by the vice president Bev Gregory.

We sang the National Anthem and stood in silence to remember Noeline Keast.

Several members are in care or confined to home and we were asked to keep in touch with them. Birthdays and wedding anniversaries were recognised. Gwenda Hansen had won a Rural Women’s competition, with the results being published in Latitude. The entries had to begin with the words “A long time ago”. Gwenda read her poem to us. What a talented lady. Our mini speaker was Sharon Breakwell who educated us about recycling and the part that WasteBusters plays in our town. After morning tea the main speaker Kathryn Stringer told us about Victorian women’s clothing and the difficulties that they must have had. She was thanked and given a gift. Twenty ladies had lunch at the Filipino Restaurant. Coffee morning Wednesday November 9 at 10.30am. Next meeting Wednesday November 23, after which we will be having our Christmas lunch.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club October 16, 6 players from our club took part in the Piste of Origin Tournament played this year at Papanui. This is an annual event among Christchurch, Ascot, Ashburton, and Papanui. We play Doubles in the morning and Triples in the afternoon. Ascot won the Trophy, but we will be back again next year.

Five of our players took part in the South Island Doubles at St Kilda over Labour week-end. Most players taking part in this event for the first time.

After the first day play, Richard Browne and Brian Westerbeek (Chch) and Jan Guilford and Marion Harrison finished in the top 8 and played the first round of the second day in the championship.

Ashburton Rose Group Ashburton Rose Group meeting held on Wednesday October 12 at the Catholic Rooms, Winter Street at 7pm. Kathy welcomed 10 members and we had apologies from 7 members. Instead of having a speaker we had a “Rosie night” where members could wear rosie clothes and bring a rose cup, saucer and plate. We had a lovely selection of rosie crockery.

We had a lengthy discussion on rose care and maintenance. Spraying should be done 2-3 times during the season. A rose spray called Ocean Grow 3-in-a-row was discussed, it is a natural fish fertiliser and controls black spot, powdery mildew and rust, kills aphids, mites, thrips and caterpillars. The other one was called Combat 3-in-1 which is a natural fish fertiliser. The fish food nourishes the roses and the leaves. Our meeting next month will be a garden trip and we hope to visit 3 gardens.

Members are asked to be at Hotel Ashburton at 10am on Tuesday November 8. Our meeting concluded with supper.

The October meeting welcomed political scientist, Associate Professor Amy Fletcher from Canterbury University. American born Dr. Fletcher spoke on the topic of American Politics from JFK to Obama drawing a large audience of members and guests. She was welcomed by Fairlie Young.

Dr. Fletcher felt the current election disappointing and harkened back to the JFK election in 1960 and the profound influence the Kennedy regime had, their personal charisma and ability to manipulate the media as we knew it at the time. His assassination in 1963 shocked the world.

In the absence of Chairman Merv Peck, John Millichamp welcomed 20 members to the October meeting. The upcoming A&P Show was discussed as the club had a stall to demonstrated woodturning.

With Lyndon Johnson now President, there began a massive roll up of the Government’s role in peoples’ lives.

America had the power to influence the world, was a very wealthy country but for the ambitious LBJ, Vietnam was to be his undoing. A colossal disaster, Vietnam was to blight the tenure of several presidents as did Watergate for Nixon. The people began to feel that the institution itself was flawed and corrupt, similar feelings also being aired in the current elections.

While President Obama has stabilised the US economy, culture issues are on the rise. Trump is tapping into long held anger since the Gulf War. Will Hillary extend Obama Care? The election campaign has offered little in policy substance but plenty of spite. Whoever gets 270 electoral votes will win the Presidency.

Dr Fletcher was thanked by Edith Smith.

Geoff Brown then talked about attending the International Woodworking Symposium in Auckland with club member George Spencer. World class demonstrators showed their methods, skills and offered any help to the viewers. A visit to CARBATEC where many interesting equipment was on display. Geoff also showed several samples of a new see through, cloth sandpaper that does not clog, easily and the importance of sharpening tools correctly.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday October 27. With a special welcome to new member Kelly-Rose Blackburn. Apologies were accepted. With Hope McIntosh playing piano we sang the R.S.A. song. Also Happy Birthday to two members, sympathy was given to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one. Sick members were wished well. Tinwald Branch New Zealand Red Cross The monthly meeting was held on Tuesday 1st November 2016 in the Tinwald Hall.

President Pat O’Brien welcomed members and all said the Red Cross Principles. Apologies were accepted and unwell members contacted. Audrey Bruce presented the Financial Report. Thanks was extended to Mary Miles for organising our major Annual Raffle. The Raffle will be drawn on 10 November. Each member was given a copy of the Invitation of the New Zealand Red Cross Road Show gathering on 30th November to be held at Community House.

The Secretary General of New Zealand Red Cross will be present. This Road Show is starting in Keri Keri and concluding in Westport and all Branch areas of Red Cross will be visited.

The Branch was reminded that nominations are still required for the Area Council. It is Red Cross’ turn to deliver Meals on Wheels next week and several members help with this. A discussion was held on ideas of how to commemorate the World Red Cross Remembrance Day on 17 December. The members agreed to hold two monthly meetings next year beginning in February. Orders for the NZRC Diaries were taken. The meeting closed and Alison Donald was welcomed. She demonstrated how to do floral arrangements, using different vases, bowls and containers. Most of the flowers were from her garden and a stunning array of arrangements were produced. She was thanked by Elizabeth Davies. A lovely afternoon was then served.

Fairton

Ten members met at 3 Filey Place for our October meeting starting with a finger-food luncheon commencing at midday.

Motto: The biggest lie I tell myself is: “I don’t need to write that down.”

The Roll Call: toiletries for hospital yielded a wonderful collection.

Our interesting speaker was Lilian Wakelin who with her husband travelled to South India to attend an Indian wedding.

Binoi is a Hindu Indian man who worked on Wakelin’s dairy farm and an arranged marriage was organised for him – he had forty five minutes to say “yes” or “no”.

The wedding was a very lavish affair, the bride and groom both wore red, the bridegroom had six male attendants, the bride Neensha, none. Lilian was thanked by Janice Allen and presented with a gift.

Birthday honours for this month was Joan, on the 25th. The raffle was won by Elizabeth.

Fairton’s meeting was held on October 6 at Joyce Giller’s home as the weather didn’t look good for the planned Garden Walk in the Domain. Seven members attended Barbara opened the meeting and the Aspirations were read.

The Motto: “May life be like a garden with flowers of friendship spread,” and the Roll Call – wear a rose and name it.

Some very good reports from members who attended the Half Yearly Meeting and the Netherby Home Industries Fair.

The A&P Bay and Tray competitions were discussed and all sorted. After a lovely cuppa and chat, the rain started and the meeting was closed.

Barbara thanked Joyce for opening her home.

Netherby President Pauline welcomed twenty-one members to this meeting when a prayer was said together in memory of our late dear member Shirley Quaid.

As a result of our recent Home

Industries Show we now have seven beanies and eleven pairs of TV slippers to give to a good cause.

Joan Henderson reported on the Federation Hal-Yearly meeting at which she had been delegate.

For Golden Threads this month, Pauline had arranged a game of It’s in the Bag for a bit of fun.

We were then entertained by member Iris Taylor on her electronic organ and ukulele which was well received by members.

Competitions resulted in the Northchurch Trophy being won

by Molly Amos with the Moylan Trophy going to Valmai Mitchell.

Several loaves were delivered to the Cancer Society as a result of the baking. The monthly raffle was won by Daphne Nish.

Tinwald Staveley was our destination for our car trip in October.

Eight members enjoyed our day out. A lovely sunny spring day made our trip worthwhile. A nice lunch at the Staveley store led to discussion on progress of our Show Bay. Members received a hug from Judy Vaughan, our Fed-

eration President, who joined us for the day.

We then drove to Hinds to the merino clothing and cafe shop where some members purchased goods.

Ice creams were the order of the day! Then, homeward bound after an enjoyable day out.

Wakanui Wakanui held a short October meeting at Jenette Storrier’s home.

Our roll call was “wear a piece of jewellery and talk about it” was very interesting.

Some pieces had been passed down through generations, others being brought back from overseas trips.

Members gave a lovely array of grocery items for Ronald McDonald House.

Arrangements for our November/Christmas meeting were discussed. The meeting closed at 12.50pm then on to Somerset Grocers for lunch.

Westpark Our October meeting held at the home of our president was very

well attended.

This month’s motto, we felt was very true – “Real friends are like a ray of sunshine on a dull day”.

Two roll calls this month, an exchange of recipes, and a small monetary donation for the Cancer Society were both very well supported.

President Heather presented Ann Begbie with her Sixty Year badge – congratulations Ann. Birthday wishes were given to Sylvia Smith.

There was much discussion on our entries for the Bay and tray, as well as arrangements for our trip in November. The monthly raffle was won by Ellie Leak.

The speaker for the afternoon was Eleanor Hemi, who told us of the origin of the Maori Wardens, and of the work they carry out in our community.

We were all very much enlightened about many of the problems in the community, to which the Wardens respond.

Eleanor was thanked by Margaret Thorpe and presented with a small gift.

MID CANTERBURY RUAL WOMEN REPORTS Provincial president’s message The reward of volunteering your time and skills to organisations within our community is satisfying.

Our Rural Women members last month provided seven cars and personnel on each day to undertake the role of Meals on Wheels.

There is nothing that harvests more of a feeling of empowerment than being of service to someone in need.

All organisations and communities need people to offer their services in some way to ensure events continue to be offered for the benefit of all. It does not have to be full on, but just knowing you are there to help in some small way is a huge encouragement. Whether it be the school, Plunket, Playcentre, sports group or Rural Women please consider assisting when asked or even better offer your services. Every little bit helps!

The 139th annual Ashburton A&P Show will see 100s of volunteers willingly offer their time and skills to this annual event. Without these people, the Show could not undertake to provide this occasion for the town, country and the many show and site exhibitors.

Next time you see a gap in an organisation that attracts your interest, consider offering your skills and time.

Anama Rural Women Our October meeting saw thirteen members travel to Peelview

Farm, the home of Bryan and Jackie Clearwater, the owners and creators of Clearwater organic yoghurt.

Jackie explained that when she and her husband purchased the beef and sheep farm in 1999, they decided to convert to organic dairying.

The couple believe in caring for the planet, and this is reflected in their farming practices. They don’t believe in using artificial fertilisers or weed sprays or anything that could upset the delicate ecological balance of the soil. No antibiotics are used on the farm, instead natural remedies such as garlic and cider vinegar, are administered with great results.

Rather than simply supplying milk to Fonterra, they wanted to create a value-added product, and enlisted the expertise of Ad Sintenie, who had trained in Holland and England.

In keeping with their beliefs, the Clearwaters have recycled wherever possible. The milking shed is second-hand and six former shipping containers have been converted for use as commercial food premises.

Two hundred and thirty cows are milked daily, a small herd by current standards, producing twenty thousand litres of yoghurt monthly. No sugar or gelatine is added to the product. Within twenty four hours of cows being milked, the yoghurt is trucked out the gate.

Jackie impressed our members as being really passionate about her beliefs, and left us feeling nothing but admiration for what both she and her husband, Bryan, have achieved.

Seafield Rural Women

Eight members met at the St Paul’s lounge for their meeting. President Kerry took the meeting and welcomed us all and led with the creed.

We had two congratulations to pass on with Kerry becoming the chairman of the ACWW United Committee and her daughter Matilda won a Scholarship for Music from the Masonic Lodge. Joyce Johnson won first prize for muffins at provincial AGM plus the branch won the tray for attendance again.

We then went through all the business and correspondence was tabled. Arranged cars and runners for Meals on Wheels which we are doing on October 13.

After business was completed Kerry spoke to us about a conference she went to for National Council of Women that was held at Te Papa. It was based on gender equality with about 200 people in attendance. She found it all very informative and interesting.

After she was thanked and given a fruit pack we finished with a social catch up over a cup of tea.

Work and Income, she is not a social worker she is a navigator helping to navigate people in the right direction to make a connection to help ease social and physical isolation. There are a lot of social isolation issues also in urban areas although she works mobile she does have an office space at Community House.

Her role is very broad.

Since February this year she has had 80 referrals and of these 72 have had connections made and 60 resolved.

Sandra Curd thanked Brenna and gave her a gift pack of fruit.

Thanks for the support for the successful movie night and a good fundraiser for Provincial Children’s Craft Day. Thanks to all those members who assisted in any way with the craft morning, it was well supported and enjoyed by the children attending.

Brenna Russell who is a community connector for Rural Primary Health Organisation was introduced as our speaker for the meeting. Brenna works in the Ashburton and Selwyn area with rural people who are socially isolated and distressed in the rural community.

Brenna gave us a history of her life up until now and the training she has done.

Her position is funded by the Ministry of Social Development.

Our guest for October was Hazel Redmond, who took us through her journey from being a fit and healthy young girl at St Margaret’s boarding school in 2010, with hopes of University and Journalism to her month spent in Christchurch Hospital suffering from viral meningitis and the resulting encephalitis.

Hazel outlined her recovery and relearning her skills with Southern Regional Health School before returning to College in 2011.

Wake a Wish Foundation granted Hazel a trip to Auckland to meet fashion designer Karen

Walker and she was lucky to be shown around the inner sanctum of Karen’s workplace.

Karen became her mentor and now Hazel is now an ambassador for the Make a Wish Foundation in this area.

Hazel competed in a 21km half marathon last year which is proof to how far she has come since 2010.

Now running a photo shop in Ashburton, she brought along some of her framed artwork for members to admire.

With the departure of our guest, the monthly meeting was held with president, Bev Bagrie taking the chair.

Bev reported that Lynnford Branch sold 115 tickets for the Life Education fund raising movie, Bridget Jones’ Baby. A total of $1200 was raised.

The Meals on Wheels co-ordinator, Louise Clucas is standing down after 18 years. Marian Dent indicated she will do it for a year.

A disappointing low number of members attended the last Link meeting and a discussion was held on options for the future. The next meeting is to be held November 18 at 9.30am at the Rosebank Centre.

It is to be hoped a few more Lynnford members will attend.

The knitted Safe Houses that were knitted last year and displayed in the Timaru Library have been entered in the Lady Blundell Competition at the AGM. Meals on Wheels roster was confirmed with those members for Monday and the catering for the Lions dinner finalised.

The next meeting to be held at the new Community House at 1.30pm on November 3. Entrance at the Briscoes side of the building.

Filipo avoids jail time

Wellington rugby player Losi Filipo has avoided jail and been sentenced to nine months of supervision.

Filipo yesterday morning maintained his guilty plea for an assault on four people in Wellington.

Justice Collins said Filipo stomping on the first victim’s head was “a chilling act of violence” and could easily have killed the victim.

He said the minimum starting point for sentencing should be two years in prison.

Discounts for mitigating factors included Filipo’s age, his lack of previous convictions, the rehabilitative steps Filipo has already taken voluntarily and his guilty plea.

He was “in no doubt” the best sentence would be one that was short of prison.

“You have the opportunity to demonstrate that you are worthy of being a professional rugby player.”

Justice Collins said he was satisfied a supervision sentence was appropriate, as was recommended by a probation officer. – NZME

A mother and daughter duo are set to compete in December’s Dubliner Fight Night at Methven.

Mandy and Holly McTigue both put their hands up to lace up the gloves for the charity bouts.

The two won’t be fighting each other, though.

Organisers are still finding an opponent in the right weight class for Holly, while Mandy’s opponent has already been picked but will not be disclosed until closer to the event.

Mandy, who works as a fitness instructor at Les Mills, said despite doing a lot of exercise, she is finding the sweet science challenging.

Meanwhile, Holly said her biggest hurdle is getting used to wearing a mouthguard without vomiting, which has earned her the nickname Chuck.

The pair are being coached by Dubliner owner Gary Manning and Dubliner chef Joe Keepa.

Ashburton Boxing Club coaches Roydon and John Leath have also been giving the McTigues tips, as well as local fighters Mel McGlynn, Sam Watt and Tamara Ngaha.

‘Arrogant’ AB fans ‘embarrassing’ British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland has a message for All Blacks fans ahead of next year’s tour. Stop being arrogant.

Gatland told the Guardian that he was embarrassed after attending the All Blacks’ recent victory over the Wallabies at Eden Park saying that ‘a little bit of arrogance’ was creeping into the New Zealand crowds.

“As a Kiwi, I was embarrassed,” he said. “There was still a large portion of the crowd booing [Australia’s] Quade Cooper. Get over it.

“One of the things I was proud

of as a Kiwi was showing humility. The All Blacks try to do that but there’s a proportion of New Zealanders that have a little bit of arrogance and not humility. It was the first time that I’ve sat there and thought: ‘We’re better than this’.”

Gatland wasn’t just annoyed with sections of the crowd at Eden Park. He wasn’t too impressed with the Weekend Herald’s cartoon of Wallabies coach Michael Cheika depicted as a clown.

Wallabies skipper Stephen Moore called it “disrespectful”

“I think it’s just something that’s between Australia and New Zealand.

“One of the things the Lions fans taught the New Zealand public was how to support a team even when they weren’t going well. The Kiwis aren’t good at that, when the team’s losing we’re not good supporters. But the Lions fans were.”

The Lions begin their tour against a Provincial Unions XV on June 3 before playing each New Zealand Super Rugby franchise, the Maori All Blacks, and the All Blacks in three tests.

Romano out of Ireland test The All Blacks will likely provide either Scott Barrett or Vaea Fifita with a debut test cap from the first minute after lock Luke Romano pulled out of the squad for the match against Ireland in Chicago.

Romano, 30, will return to New Zealand after suffering a family bereavement, leaving Blues ball-carrier Patrick Tuipulotu as the only capped lock fit to play against Ireland on Saturday.

Incumbent second-rowers Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick will both miss the Soldier Field match with an ankle injury and concussion respectively.

Romano, who plies his trade for the Crusaders, was expected

to start against Ireland in their absence.

Assistant coach Ian Foster said no replacements would be brought in for Romano despite the world champions’ locking stocks being further depleted.

He felt the 22-year-old Barrett, brother of star first-five Beauden, and 24 -year-old Fifita were capable of producing the goods on the test stage. Loose forwards Steven Luatua and Jerome Kaino were also capable of stepping into the second row.

“They’ve come in and done what we need them to do, they’ve got some good teachers around them,” Foster said.

“Scott and Vaea particularly are

working really hard, like everyone else, to get up to speed quickly and are doing a good job.”

Both locks have shone at the provincial level in 2016, with Barrett helping Canterbury secure an eighth title in nine years and Fifita impressing for Wellington.

However both will need to familiarise themselves with test rules around the breakdown after playing the national provincial champion campaign under nowaborted trial laws.

“Both look like they’ve learned really quickly, so it’s not really an issue,” Foster said.

Foster also confirmed that star halfback Aaron Smith would be available for selection against Ire-

land after missing two Tests due to a tryst in an airport toilet.

“As far as we’re concerned, it’s back to normal,” Foster said.

TJ Perenara had ably deputised for Smith in his absence, scoring four tries and making 200 passes across the entire Rugby Championship.

New Zealand will take on an Irish outfit at the cusp of a new northern season but burdened by injuries to key loose forwards Sean O’Brien, Iain Henderson and Peter O’Mahony.

Ulster first-five Paddy Jackson will also miss the trip across the pond, leaving uncapped Joey Carbery as back-up for star playmaker Johnny Sexton.

Gearing up for the coastal challenge

Tinwald Year 5 and 6 students are continuing to keep fit as they prepare for the ATS Longbeach Coastal Challenge later this month.

The 70 Year 5 and 6 students completed a lap around the school yesterday morning and were joined by Advance Ashburton chairman Trevor Croy and Tinwald Club former member Rodger Herriott, who are sponsoring the school in this year’s challenge.

Tinwald School Year 5 and 6 teacher Peter Edwards said with the $700 grant given to them by Advance Ashburton and, combined with other fundraisers this year, the school will be able to have all Year 5 and 6 students compete at no cost to their families. Edwards said the school had a range of students and it was great that everyone who wanted to participate could, without cost being an issue.

Tinwald School Year 5 and 6 teacher Louise Gorman said the school had started daily fitness classes at the start of term two to train for the crosscountry.

Gorman said once the cross-country was over they thought it would be a shame to stop the daily exercise routine so they set the Longbeach Coastal Challenge as a new goal to work towards.

Man City downs Barcelona

By Steve DouglaS Pep Guardiola brought down the footballing superpower he helped to create, leading Manchester City to a 3-1 win over Barcelona in a landmark Champions League result for the English club yesterday.

The victory that City and its Abu Dhabi ownership has craved since joining the Europe elite in 2011 was achieved the hard way, too, coming after Lionel Messi gave Barcelona a 21st-minute lead with his 90th goal in the Champions League.

City took advantage of a defensive error to equalize through Ilkay Gundogan in the 39th minute and swarmed all over Barcelona in the second half, with a free kick from Kevin De Bruyne and Gundogan’s second goal completing the comeback.

City has modeled itself on Barcelona — in the boardroom, on the field and most recently in the dug-out by bringing in Guardiola, who coached Barcelona to 14 trophies from 2008-12 and turned the Messi-inspired team into perhaps the greatest club side ever.

For that reason, it will be the sweetest of wins for City.

“Now we realise we won against the best team (in the world),” Guardiola said.

It was also crucial in the short term for City, reigniting its Group C campaign that would have been on the rocks with a loss at Etihad Stadium. City is now two points behind first-placed Barcelona after four games, with both teams big favourites to progress to the last 16.

City will advance with a draw at third-placed Borussia Moenchengladbach in round five, provided Barcelona doesn’t lose at Celtic. Barcelona only needs a point to secure a place in the knockout stage for a 13th straight season.

Askin aiming high Local showjumper Lucinda Askin has high hopes going into the second round of the South Island leg of the FEI World Jumping Challenge on home turf at Ashburton this weekend.

Since returning from a short stint of work in the US, Canada and Australia in September, Askin has made a big impact on the southern jumping scene.

The 20-year-old won the first three FMG Young Rider Series classes on the trot with new ride Portofino, a 12-year-old Australian ex-racehorse, as well as finishing fourth in the opening round of the FEI World Jumping Challenge at Canterbury at Labour Weekend aboard the talented mare, I.Q, in the mare’s first show after missing most of last season due to injury.

Askin and Portofino will take on strong fields in both the Mainland Coachwork FMG Young Rider Series and Paul Smith Earthmoving Horse Mini Prix this weekend, but it’s with I.Q she has the biggest hopes as she looks to move up the leaderboard in the FEI World Jumping Challenge.

“It was a pretty good effort (at Canterbury) to come straight out and go into a class like that. She hasn’t been long in work,” Askin

said. And after all but winning the Kazmere Horse Stud 1.30m at the Ashburton A&P Show last weekend when she looked to have victory in the bag until the very last fence in the jump-off, Askin’s confident of another strong showing.

She will have her work cut out with a strong field of 17 entered this weekend, including fellow local and round one winner Jamiee Bird on Wenrose Vertigo, as well as last year’s South Island FEI World Jumping Challenge series winner Steffi Whittaker (Springston) on Ngahiwi Cruise.

The FEI World Jumping Challenge will be the highlight of Sunday’s jumping programme, kicking off immediately after the Neumanns Tyre Service Equissage Pony Grand Prix and before the Wholesale Seeds Ltd Bayeys Real Estate ESNZ Horse Grand Prix Series gets under way.

Now in its 38th year, the revamped version of the FEI World Jumping Challenge puts competitors up against the rest of the world with the competition divided into 10 geographical zones and three categories. The South Island only offers category A, open to riders 15 years and older, jumping to heights of 1.20m to 1.30m.

Riders accumulate points at the three shows, two rounds at each and the winner of the South Island category A section earns the opportunity to head to the world final to represent pool 8, which includes much of Australasia. The challenge is run around the world with all competitors jumping the same course plan designed by Portugal’s Bernardo Costo Cabral.

The original aim of the competition was to give the less experienced jumping riders, who live in more remote countries, the opportunity to compete internationally without having to leave their own country, however under the new format introduced last year it’s as much about increasing national activity.

Askin had nothing but praise for the concept, saying it was a tough competition that required consistency over all three rounds.

It was also great to be able to get experience riding in a small ring over a course designed by one of the world’s leading course designers, she said.

Entries across the two days of competition are strong with three rings of jumping and one showhunter ring in action from 8.30am on both Saturday and Sunday. Entry to the grounds is free.

Promising cricketer Scott Kuggeleijn has asked to be excused from any potential New Zealand representative playing obligations. Kuggeleijn is facing a re-trial early next year on a rape charge. The first trial, stemming from an incident in Hamilton in May last year, ended in a hung jury after 11 hours’ deliberation. Kuggeleijn, a fast-medium bowler and an assertive lower middle order batsman for Northern Districts, would have been an almost certain inclusion in the New Zealand A squad to play Pakistan in Nelson this month.

Trophy on tour Hurricanes fans in Hawke’s Bay will have the opportunity to get up and close to the premier division’s top piece of silverware next week. The Investec Super Rugby Trophy is set to embark on a tour of the regions which make up the Hurricanes’ patch and on that schedule are stopovers in Napier and Hastings. The trophy will also pass through HorowhenuaKapiti, Manawatu, Wairarapa Bush, Whanganui, Poverty Bay and the East Coast.
