Selwyn was in a different situation to Ashburton as it was much closer to Christchurch and did not have its own sports complex, she said.

Stage 2 of motorway at half-way

Stage 2 of the Christchurch Southern Motorway project has reached the halfway mark towards completion.

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is improving the safety and alignment of the Christchurch Southern Corridor with the second stage of the Christchurch Southern Motorway project.

NZTA is making Main South Road (SH1) from near Rolleston to Robinsons Road, four lane and building a new section of motorway through Greenfields to connect with the first stage of the Christchurch Southern Motorway at Halswell Junction Road.

“The project is about 51 per cent complete and on target to open to traffic early 2020,” NZTA’s principal project manager Geoff Griffiths said.

Currently, Main South Road is a hive of activity with work ongoing with several aspects of the project.

“Construction of the southbound lanes will commence in mid-2018 and traffic will be diverted onto a temporary diversion road during the construction of the Robinsons Road overpass.

“Half of the beams for the bridge at the Weedons Interchange are in place. Structures at Trents Road and Waterholes are nearing completion and await sealing.

The significant layout changes at the Hornby end of the project are under way and traffic travelling on the Christchurch Southern Motorway is soon to be switched onto a temporary diversion road to allow construction of

the bridge to continue.

“The diversion road will be in place until the new section of motorway is ready to take traffic, estimated to be late 2019.

“Traffic is soon to be switched onto a portion of the new northbound lanes on Main South Road between Rolleston and Robinsons Road.

The project is expected to reduce fatal and serious crashes by 40 per cent and significantly reduce travel time between Rolleston and Christchurch.

The project will also include a cycle-pedestrian shared path linking the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 1 cycle-pedestrian shared path with the ex-

Big investment aims to boost skier numbers

The Ashburton District has earned itself the major share of an almost $1 million investment that will lure Australian skiers to New Zealand this winter.

Tourism New Zealand is leading an eight week Winter at its Peak marketing campaign in conjunction with Christchurch NZ, Christchurch Airport and Mt Hutt Ski Area. Its objective is to attract more Australian skiers who will

stay longer in Canterbury.

Of the $900,000, Experience Mid Canterbury will be utilising nearly $650,000 to drive tourist numbers into the Ashburton District, the organisation’s chief executive Bruce Moffat said.

“And we’ll be doing this at virtually no cost to the district’s ratepayers. We’re often challenged about the industry working together with collective marketing and this is a very good example of how this works,” Moffat said.

It was a huge vote of confidence in the district that it was attracting such a significant investment from some key players in the industry, Moffat said.

While the campaign was aimed at growing skier numbers on Mt Hutt, the spin-off in spending would be felt across the district and that revenue was coming from industry investment rather than from ratepayers, he said.

“It’s great when we can get the big corporates to buy into this, it’s great for the industry and great for the district.”

Calls for Ashburton to “pull its socks up” and kick its litter habit out are being backed by an elderly Ashburton resident who has spent years collecting rubbish in the domain and CBD. After reading an article on Netherby grandmother Bev Skates’ mission to clean up the town, the woman – who asked not to be named – contacted the Guardian to tell her story.

She said for years she has followed a daily route through the domain and across the railway footbridge watching the amount of rubbish gradually increase, and trying to clean up what she can.

The worst part, she said, is the grass strip between East Street and the train tracks. Half-full pizza boxes, squashed beer cans and discarded pairs of shoes are among the objects she collects daily.

“It’s a shame. People just don’t care,” she said.

“You only have to stop on the overbridge to see the state that area’s in. There’s old clothes and rubbish everywhere, and nothing gets done.”

The woman returned to Ashburton 13 years ago after working overseas, and feels young people are responsible for a lot of the litter.

“I’m not sure what we can do to fix it. I know we’re not the only place with a litter problem – other than Singapore, where you get your hands cut off for littering – but maybe that’s a bit extreme!”

She intended to contact Skates, and let her know she is not the only taking Ashburton’s litter problem into her own hands.

Skates had heard of an overseas phenomenon called “plogging” involving jogging or walking while picking up litter, and proposed that if lots of Ashburton residents got on board and adopted their own plogging patch, a big difference might be evident.

Hive just the beginning for town centre rejuvenation

A new co-share business hub in Methven opened this week, with almost half of its office spaces already occupied.

The concept has grown from the Methven Community Board co-funded Igniting Change project, addressing the dilemma of a fading town centre.

Called Hive, it is located in The Mall, at a shop site which was previously empty following closure of the Methven Bookshop.

It sits next door to the empty former community craft shop.

Co-ordinator Peter Summers said retail was no longer the main path for growth in small town centres such as Methven, however, there was potential nonetheless.

“It’s about bringing people into the town centre, working, meeting here, basically driving increased traffic,” Summers said.

Hive comprises a communal boardroom and seven work spaces in an open plan office, three of which are already leased.

The tenants are Summers himself, Methven’s main commercial centre landlord, Construction Nominees, represented by Mark Jacobs, and South Pacific Engineering, represented by Sam Kircher.

Summers said he had received strong interest from other entities, including surrounding farmers currently operating their administration from home.

Hive was complementing other new businesses such as an art gallery, thriving alongside long-

standing shops, offices and cafes.

Hive has a stone façade, bringing a more upmarket look to The Mall, and this is to be extended along neighbouring buildings.

Summers was confident even more businesses would be attracted to a rejuvenating commercial precinct.

He was aware of one business eyeing up the neighbouring former craft shop, while the former indoor skate park on the corner of McMillan Street and Forest Drive, once tagged for a multimillion dollar retail, office and apartment complex, was now being considered as a site for a brewery and distillery.

“There’s a bit of collective voice at the moment for people to continue growing the town centre,” Summers said.

Retrieval ties up emergency services

Coming across the scene of a submerged vehicle in the Hinds River was a frightening experience for a local contractor recently.

The man, who did not want to be named, phoned emergency services after finding the single cab Toyota Hilux in the Hinds River about 8.15am on Sunday, at the flooded Hackthorne Road ford.

He said it appeared the vehicle’s driver would have driven over the bridge at the site and gone straight into the swollen river, and there was no way of seeing whether the driver had managed to escape.

Emergency services personnel were similarly concerned when they arrived at the scene, however, it was later discovered there was no-one in the vehicle after a digger was sourced from a local farmer to retrieve it.

Two ambulances from St John and three fire appliances, from Ashburton and Mayfield brigades, had responded, and personnel were at the scene for about 40 minutes while they waited to confirm there was no-one in the car.

“It was good news for everyone that there was no-one in it,” the man said.

The incident showed that it was important to be cautious approaching rivers in heavy rain. It was also a good reminder that in the event of having to abandon a vehicle, motorists should inform authorities that they have done so.

As it turned out on Sunday, the fact no-one knew the man driving the truck into the river was safe and sound elsewhere, resulted in a waste of time for emergency services, the man said.

A neighbouring farmer echoed

his concerns, and even suggested the motorist who abandoned the vehicle should reimburse emergency services for their time.

A police spokesperson said police expect that drivers inform them if they have been involved in a crash or an incident where their vehicle has been abandoned, so emergency services can respond appropriately.

Police have however been unable to confirm whether the person abandoning the vehicle in the Hinds River on Sunday did not inform them.

And Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Alan Burgess said he would not comment on whether the driver, if they did not inform authorities, should have to reimburse emergency services.

“We have all sorts of false alarms, it’s not something you can just draw a line on I think,” he said.

Ashburton’s housing market reflects the price trend across Canterbury, with values remaining flat.

Quotable Value’s April figures show the average current value is $352,568, up 1.4 per cent over the past year and 0.6 per cent over the past three months.

Some parts of Canterbury counted the year in declining values with only Timaru, up 6 per cent over the year and Mackenzie, up 12.1 per cent reversing the trend.

From Timaru south values showed solid 12 month and three month growth, with Queenstown

Lakes where the current value is now $1.130 million, up 8.5 per cent over the past year.

QV general manager David Nagel said that Waitaki leadS the South Island in annual value growth, up 13.8 per cent while Gore experienced the highest quarterly increase in the regions, up 4.2 per cent.

For some time Mackenzie had been the country’s fastest mover in terms of house prices, and while it had shown 12.4 per cent growth over the past year, prices had dropped by 4.5 per cent over the past quarter.

The deep South continues to see consistent value increases across most regions, particularly

Invercargill and across Central Otago, Nagel said.

The average value of a home sold in Christchurch city is now $493,346.

Nine areas of Auckland now count their average home value in well over $1 million, with Auckland City east at $1.550 million.

At the opposite end of the scale, there are five areas where homes can be bought for well below $200,000. The lowest average current value is in Ruapheu, $185,261.

Buller is the only South Island centre to have sub $200,000 properties with a current value of $179,227, down 4.8 per cent over the past year.

It is just as well Methven residents Huia Campbell and Susan Dickson like walking.

On Tuesday next week the pair begin the Red Cross Journey, a nationwide walking initiative to raise funds for the organisation, running until May 31.

Using pedometers and fitbits, they will aim to clock up 10,000 steps per day, 24 days in a row.

Dickson is a marathon runner, and should have no trouble reaching the goal, as she is currently preparing for the 2018 Rio de Janeiro marathon, to be held in June.

“It’s going to be part of my training,” she said.

And Campbell does plenty of walking each day, living in the

town and using her legs as her main form of transport, including to her children’s school and the Red Cross shop, where she is a volunteer.

Campbell thinks she probably already clocks up 10,000 steps, which is about eight kilometres, each day.

“Sometimes it feels a bit more,” she said.

Volunteers rekindle Neighbourhood Support

Several Neighbourhood Support Groups are reforming across Ashburton in a bid to bring safety to the community, after young volunteers gave up their school holiday time to help.

During student volunteer week last month, five volunteers hit the streets distributing fliers for Safer Ashburton, providing information about Neighbourhood Support Groups to areas which had become inactive.

Neighbourhood Support co-ordinator Christine Richards said as a result, six locals have put their names forward to become street contacts for their area and make their groups active and effective again.

She said she was delighted with the efforts of the young volunteers and the response from the Ashburton community.

“It is great that these young people put their hands up to volunteer so now others have put their hands up to volunteer also,” she said.

The volunteers were thanked at a morning tea last Friday, hosted by Student Volunteer Week organisers, Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury, Cactus Mid Canterbury and Base Youth.

Richards said the volunteers indicated they were happy to help out again during future school holidays – which was great news to her organisation.

Significant rain likely in coming months Significant rainfall events remain on the cards for New Zealand over the next three months, says NIWA. “The combination of lower than normal sea level pressure over the New Zealand region and warmer than average Tasman Sea temperatures over the coming months will result in an elevated chance for significant rainfall events,” NIWA said in its threemonthly climate outlook issued yesterday.

Mid Canterbury can expect near average or above average temperatures from May to July.

And winter will make itself known, with frosts and cold snaps, with some “possibly quite sharp”.

NIWA also forecast rainfall totals to be normal or above normal for the district, and soil moisture levels are likely to be above normal and river flows in the near normal to above normal range.

Road safety breaches targeted

As cops across the country gear up for road safety week next week, local police have a message for Ashburton drivers.

Buckle up, watch your speed and don’t drive distracted or impaired by alcohol or drugs.

It’s a simple equation, senior sergeant Phil Dean said “if you

don’t want to get a ticket, that’s all you need to do”.

This year’s road safety week will extend right across the month of May and see police focusing on seatbelts and distractions in particular.

Almost a third of all people who die on our roads are not wearing seatbelts.

Loos to love for domain

For years the Ashburton Domain playground toilets have been visited only by the desperate.

Spiders lurked in corners, toilet paper was a matter of chance, hand basins were often grimy and the only blessing was that poor lighting hid whatever nasties were lurking in cubicle corners.

Those days have gone.

The elderly concrete toilets are about to be demolished and work is under way on their replacement, a modern facility that should be a pleasure to use.

The four cubicle, unisex facility arrived on a truck and it’ll be hooked up, commissioned and opened for business with demolition of the old block then undertaken.

Council opens spaces manager David Askin anticipates the new facilities will be operational this month.

The playground was a popular attraction for families and it was important good toilet facilities were close by, Askin said.

“They might be an overlooked convenience for some, but well designed and maintained public toilets can make a big difference

to your visit and we’re pleased to be able to update the old facilities.”

The original toilets were in-

stalled in 1984 and were representative of a popular design from the time, with separate sides for men and women.

The roof for the new facilities will be installed in the next two weeks and the power and plumbing will then be connected.

Peters weighs in on Gayford rumours Barnett family flooded with messages of support

Popular radio DJ Simon Barnett, and his family, have been flooded with messages of support after wife and mum Jodi was admitted to hospital.

Barnett is taking extended leave from his hosting role on More FM Breakfast to care for Jodi.

After appearing to have a fit or stroke on Sunday, Jodi has since been diagnosed with two lesions on the brain.

Doctors are positive about her outlook, and she is to remain in hospital to receive treatment,

with an operation in 10 to 12 days.

“We’re wishing a fast recovery for Jodi, and keeping her, Si, and the rest of the Barnett family in our thoughts and prayers,” said More FM on its website.

Hundreds of listeners have sent messages of support, including through the More FM Si & Gary Facebook page, which has received hundreds of comments.

Breakfast team member Samantha Baxter yesterday thanked listeners on behalf of Barnett, and said messages would be printed out and given to him.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern may not be pointing the finger over rumours around her partner Clarke Gayford, but deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters is.

Without naming anyone specifically, Peters said it was a dirty campaign which had been going for some time.

“The Prime Minister might be reserved about it but this is part of a dirty campaign and it’s clearly been going on for some time, and it’s baseless, clearly from the police denial.

“It’s just a part of the black ops politics that have been happening in this country for some time.

The only people who would be behind it would be the people who would seek to be politically

advantaged by it. Have a wild guess who that might be?”

Peters wouldn’t go so far as to name anyone or any organisation, telling media they could draw their own conclusions.

But he said he had been a victim of a black ops campaign himself.

Speaking to reporters on her way into Parliament, Ardern again refused to address the rumours.

“To me it doesn’t matter what you call it, and I won’t be pointing any finger of blame to anyone.

“All I know is it’s not why I’m here. It’s not had anything to do with the job that I need to do so I’m just going to keep getting on

with it and I’m going to smile through it as well.”

“I’m not going to get embroiled in this debate. It’s not what I’m here for.”

Police Minister Stuart Nash declined to say whether a police statement on the issue was run by him first.

“No idea what you’re talking about mate,” he said to a reporter.

For the past seven months, Gayford has been the subject of untrue allegations and accusations.

It led to police commissioner Mike Bush taking the extraordinary step of signing off a statement rejecting the speculation.

Asylum caravan at border The caravan of Central Americans seeking asylum in the United States sought the world’s attention as scores of migrants travelled through Mexico on a journey to escape their violent homelands.

Now that the group has arrived at the border, the next steps in their journey will unfold mostly out of public view.

The caravan first drew attention in the US when President Donald Trump promised that his administration would seek to turn the families away.

The rest of the asylum-seeking process will happen slowly and secretively in immigration courts.

Dan Kowalski, editor of Bender’s Immigration Bulletin, said the public will “probably see very little (of the caravan cases) unless the applicant is represented and the attorney makes an effort to bring the client into the limelight”.

A total of 28 caravan members were accepted for processing earlier this week by US border inspectors at San Diego’s San Ysidro crossing, an official with US Customs and Border Protection said.

The crossing, the nation’s busiest, processed about 50 asylum seekers a day from October through February, suggesting the wait will be short.

The caravan’s numbers, while tiny compared to previous surges of Central Americans to South Texas and Haitians to San Diego, will be a test

of Trump’s tough words.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said asylum claims will be resolved “efficiently and expeditiously”. She also warned that anyone making false claims could be prosecuted and said asylum seekers should seek protection in the first safe country they reach, including Mexico.

US attorneys who counseled asylum seekers in Tijuana warned that they could be separated from family and spend many months in detention, a shift from the Obama administration.

Separating asylum-seeking families has become more

common, as has detaining them while their cases wind through the courts.

Children travelling alone are placed with family, other sponsors or in group homes overseen by the Health and Human Services Department.

Nearly 80 per cent of asylum-seekers passed the initial screening from October through December, but few are likely to win asylum, which requires the petitioner to show well-founded fear of persecution on grounds of race, religion, nationality, political beliefs or membership in a social group.

Rival Koreas remove propaganda weaponry The rival Koreas dismantled huge loudspeakers used to blare Cold War-style propaganda across their tense border, as South Korea’s president asked the United Nations to observe the North’s planned closing of its nuclear test site.

The dismantling of dozens of loudspeakers was in line with an agreement on reconciliation by the leaders of the Koreas at their historic summit last week.

It is still unclear if such measures can bring permanent peace because no major breakthrough in the North Korean nuclear standoff was produced at the summit.

South Korean soldiers disassembled loudspeakers in multiple front-line areas in the presence of journalists before pulling them away from the border, the Defence Ministry said.

A South Korea military officer said later that North Korea had also begun taking down its propaganda loudspeakers earlier in the day.

Both Koreas had turned off the propaganda broadcasts along the 248-kilometre long border last week before the summit.

They had restarted their propaganda warfare in early 2016 when tensions rose

At least 28 killed in blasts Police say at least 28 worshippers have been killed and 56 wounded, with many of the victims caught in the second blast while trying to flee in an attack on a mosque in northeast Nigeria.

Adamawa State police spokesman Othman Abubakar said an explosion occurred during prayers on Tuesday afternoon and many people died as they fled and were caught by a second blast.

Abubakar said the scene in Mubi has been cordoned off by

anti-bomb squads and security personnel.

Local residents say they saw a young man wearing a vest with explosives entering the mosque with the worshippers. One resident says the mosque’s roof was blown off.

Many are blaming the Nigeria-based Boko Haram extremist group for the attack.

The jihadist group carried out an attack in Maiduguri on Thursday, capital of neighbouring Borno state, which killed four people.

Earlier this week, Moon shook off a suggestion that he receive the Nobel Peace Prize for reducing tensions with North Korea, saying Trump “can take the Nobel prize” as long as the Koreas receive peace in return.

China eyeing blue skies China wants to make its skies blue again and a combined double whammy Emissions Trading Scheme and carbon tax is how they see it happening.

They’re two ideas that have been controversial in Australia but for China, while it has been complex to develop, it was a simple decision.

Low carbon is the future, Jiang Kejun, a senior researcher at the Chinese government’s Energy Research

Institute, told AAP. “This is a very strong signal to tell investors, otherwise investors don’t know what’s in the future, they only think about short term benefits,” he said at an emissions reduction summit in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Businesses are on board with the ETS, officially expanded nationally in December as a follow-up to seven pilot programs running around the country.

You look after you, we’ll look after us T

he comments on today’s front page of the Guardian from Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel around the potential of funding from Ashburton District ratepayers toward Christchurch’s new multi-use arena will come as sweet, sweet music to most around the region.

As we face an interesting point in time where no-one seems quite clear on any potential rises to rates that have been tabled thus far from within our own boundaries, the cost of picking up the bill, as such, for one of our neighbours might have been a burden too tough to bear for most.

Ashburton is a little bit like that plant you’ve got at home – the

one that no matter how much you neglect it, it just doesn’t seem to want to wilt. It’s reasonably self-sufficient and draws on its own resources in order to survive.

It doesn’t often need the big brother to come flying in with the watering can to feather the nest, it manages just fine without it.

We did just fine in raising our own funds to build the EA Networks Centre a while back and,

by the looks of it, we will have to do the same again in the near future to ensure its continued expansion to suit the needs of Mid Cantabrians.

And that’s fantastic and something we should all be proud of.

Now it should be stated here, that the Christchurch City Council hasn’t come crawling its way over the Rakaia River Bridge with the cap in their hand just yet.

They’ve merely floated the idea, but it’s good to see our mayor being proactive immediately and suggesting that they might get to the halfway point across the bridge and find the door is well and truly shut even before they begin knocking.

Yes, there will be a lot of Ash-

burton District locals who will make good use of the facilities if and when they open in Christchurch, but enough to consider making a substantial offering to help fund the project? One would most certainly think not.

A large number of people from within the Christchurch boundaries will have at times used the facilities here in Ashburton and they’ve done so with the fact that not one cent of their own money has played a part in its building.

So, then why should it work the other way?

We have of course helped in the past with the Christchurch Museum, but only to a point.

To look at it in a rather frank, and somewhat brutal light, the

idea that Ashburton District ratepayers would be forced into aiding another region build something that they won’t see the benefits of frequently enough to appreciate seems to border on a sign of desperation.

Let’s just hope that if the Christchurch City Council does come asking, that they are politely shown the success of a venue like the EA Networks Centre and reminded that although it pales in comparison in terms of costing, the pool from which ratepayer funding was drawn from to help build the facility was comparative to that of Christchurch in terms of population.

6 months of achievements

I

t has been six months since our Labour-led Government took office – an incredibly busy six months!

I am proud of everything we’ve achieved since October, ticking off everything in our 100-day plan and more, from introducing the Families Package to raising the minimum wage.

But we aren’t slowing down.

There’s a whole lot more planned and we’ll be just as busy in the coming months, as we work to make Aotearoa an even better and fairer country for everyone.

Personally, the first six months in my new role as a Labour list MP has been incredibly rewarding. There has been much to learn in the House and out in the electorate also.

electorate has been at the forefront of my mind over these six months. I will continue to work hard to ensure that our communities continue to thrive and that we have a strong voice in parliament.

This Government is investing in our regions. Through our Provincial Growth Fund, we’re funding regional projects that enhance economic development opportunities, create sustainable jobs and contribute to com-

munity wellbeing. We are also making local and regional roads a priority.

During this first six months, we have prioritised people. From introducing Winter Energy Payments for superannuitants and people on a benefit, to changing the law to ensure all rental homes are healthy and dry, we are committed to improving the lives of our people and whanau.

We are also prioritising our environment. Already this term we have announced the banning of microbeads, we’ve started planting one billion trees and, of course, announced an end to new offshore oil and gas exploration, while honouring all current permit holders and ensuring no existing jobs will be lost. This vital work all helps the transition

to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

This is just a mere snippet of the work we have done so far.

We’ve worked extremely hard to achieve so much in such a short time.

We’ll be announcing other ways this Government will support you and your whanau, while making sure we remain fiscally responsible and return a surplus, in our upcoming Budget.

Why the ‘h’ do they bother?

’ve long contended that some of the dullest minds in the country are currently sitting around local government tables and making decisions much bigger than their respective neurons can effectively process.

To be (a bit) fair, of those most are more inclined towards governance roles within regional councils. What better place to show off your lack of smarts?

I’ve a long history of defining regional councils as nothing more than firm enemies of the environment. Yet, these are the very people tasked with looking after our environmental resources. There’s a reason why they removed the word “environment” from their names.

It was basically a lie.

Accordingly, I’d like to see regional councils either completely revamped and/or razed to the ground.

If you think that’s extreme, it stems from years of witnessing waterways degrading on their watch. And, because they’re politically top-heavy with dairy interests, they’ve almost perfected the art of pretending they’re doing something meaningful about water quality when the opposite is generally true.

So, when their wee minds get distracted from their default position of NOT working on the most important issue facing this country’s economic and environmental stability – water – I get nervous. It’s like watching Trump, but without the lucidity.

Heard of Orizons? Oh, I’m sorry, I left out the “H”. Hori-

zons is the trading name of the Manawatu-Whanganui Regional Council – except currently Whanganui is spelled without the “h”.

Confused? Let me break it down.

Despite the Whanganui River’s name being legally changed in 1991, and the district which carries its name being legally changed in 2015, Horizons would have us believe that they need to “consult” with the ratepayers over correcting both a grammatical and a spelling error. Because, when the racist stew is all boiled down, that’s what it is. A grammatical and spelling error.

It’s really quite something that the “h” in Whanganui is still up for debate by a regional council whose boundaries are defined by two river catchments.

Further to that, Horizons has already voted to ask the New Zealand Geographic Board to go through the required process of providing a recommendation to the Government to approve the name change.

So, you’ve got to ask. Why have they decided to “consult” the people, many of whom are scattered hundreds of miles away from the Whanganui River and

district, and have no understanding of, or interest, in the area anyway?

The “consultation” is happening via their long-term plan and they’ve called for submissions.

These submissions will generate the same stock-standard responses the whole ‘h’ issue engendered before. It’s old news.

The racists come out in force arguing spurious colonial ethnocentric history, while the rational voices will likely not even play the game. Why bother?

The Horizons’ chairman has been doing the media rounds saying that the issue is “divisive” and that the council “doesn’t want to open up old wounds”. He even claims that he’s received “a number of threatening letters” about the issue.

If that’s thrown him, maybe he should try being a female opinion writer on for size?

Here’s the thing. The reason I keep putting the word “consult” in quote marks is because they absolutely did not need to do it.

Also, we all know that councils have the right to ignore said “consultation” and do whatever they want anyway. And often do.

So, why are they doing it?

I think it’s a mish-mash of misguided motives. Maybe it was to appease some racists around the council table. Perhaps it was a way to treat the Whanganui part of their territory as a poor second cousin, as many feel they do.

Possibly, they perceive the spectre of public discord as a bit of fun.

A few weeks ago, this dysfunction reared its ugly head when they decided to write to the conservation and environment ministers asking for their views about trout and salmon protection.

Why? Because one of the tactics used to deflect attention away from dairy farming’s impact on water quality is to attempt to blame introduced fish species for the problem. They’ve done it before and they despise Fish & Game for their years of effective work in highlighting dirty dairying and the negatives of irrigation schemes. Remember the One Plan?

The One Plan is the document the council uses to direct how natural resources are managed in the region. Fish & Game was successfully involved in the 2017 Environment Court judgment that found Horizons was not correctly implementing their own One Plan, or doing enough to keep streams and rivers clean, and incorrectly issuing consents for dairy farming.

Given such petty-mindedness, it’s no wonder Horizons want to relitigate the ‘h’ in Whanganui. It’s an “up you” to the legal name and an attempt to hurt local iwi.

How thick – with an “h” – do they have to be?

Last muster sale successful The Maniototo Last Muster Lamb Sale on Tuesday was very successful with vendors, including those from Mid Canterbury, heading home very happy after a record yarding of 17,000 lambs were offered.

PGG Wrightson agents sold 11,000 of those.

The sale attracted a strong crowd of buyers who competed for a highquality offering of mainly forward store lambs. There were fewer prime lambs on offer compared to last year but those that were available met good demand, selling for between $130 and $172 for the heavy weights.

After several wet and cold days leading up to the sale, the sun came out on sale day and the temperature rose, giving buyers confidence and showing the lambs off well.

The yarding included a high number of quality half-bred lambs, while there was also a good number of blackface cross and crossbreds to provide plenty of variety for the big crowd of buyers.

Top cuts of male half-bred lambs fetched $125 to $133, medium cuts $115 to $124 and lighter lambs achieved $100 to $110.

Vendor S&N Francis sold a large number of half-bred lambs at an average of $126 per head, Greer Farms half-breds averaged $124, CMD Inder half-breds averaged $124.

Blackface and Crossbreds also sold well, ranging from $100 to $130 for good stores with a few lighter lines late in sale between $80 and $95.

High prices spark growth Deer farmers appear to be building their herds on the back of strong venison and velvet prices.

Existing deer blocks are being expanded and subdivided to run more stock, feeding systems are being upgraded and more weaners are being retained for breeding, Silver Fern Farms (SFF) national deer manager Malcolm Gourlie said.

“In the first Taihape weaner sale of the season, 1000 stag fawns sold for up to $7.49 a kilo. The 600 females sold into the high sixes. These extremely high prices and the ratio of stags to hinds point to a very confident industry. Breeders are retaining their better female fawns to build or improve the quality of their herds.”

Deer Industry NZ chief executive Dan Coup said a recent survey of the industry showed that since 2011 there has been strong growth in the size of the average deer herd. The average surveyed herd had 407 breeding hinds (330 in 2011), 264 velvetting stags (165) and 360 finishing stags (220).

“Since the overall size of the national deer herd declined in this period, this points to our big deer farmers getting big-

ger. Presumably there are fewer people running deer as a side-line or as a hobby.”

Firm evidence of a national turnaround in deer numbers is a little hard to come by. The first sign was a small uptick in stag numbers reported by Statistics NZ last year. Also, since late 2017, the ratio of hinds to stags at deer slaughter plants has been around 48 per cent, which points to the industry being in a rebuilding phase.

“Modest sustained growth in the national deer herd, built on strong market demand for its products, is good for the industry. It improves our economies of scale, encourages innovation and contributes to a positive vibe that is needed to attract new blood to the industry.”

Coup said venison and velvet prices have been firming for five years on the back of reduced supply, a strong traditional market and the development of new markets and market segments.

“Farmers who stayed with deer are being rewarded for their commitment.

Many of them are growing their herds and reportedly there are newcomers looking for stock so they can get into the industry.”

Banks pressured to prove themselves A little-known peak body of government agency chief executives were to meet yesterday to discuss next steps as New Zealand regulators step up pressure on the country’s largest banks to prove they’re not indulging in the kinds of sharp business practice uncovered in Australia last month by a royal commission of inquiry into the banking sector.

The meeting of the Council of Financial Regulators brought together the head of the Treasury, Gabriel Makhlouf, the chief executive of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Carolyn Tremain, the governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Adrian Orr, and the chief executive of the Financial Markets Authority, Rob Everett, along with two senior representatives of the Commerce Commission were also been invited to attend.

The meeting follows one called

New Zealand’s jobless rate fell to its lowest level in almost a decade in the first quarter while wage inflation remained anaemic, adding to the view that the central bank will continue to signal no increase in interest rates in next week’s review.

The unemployment rate dropped to 4.4 per cent in the three months ended March 31, down from 4.5 per cent in December, Statistics New Zealand said in its household labour force survey.

The number of employed people rose 0.6 per cent in the quarter to 2.62 million and was 3.1 per cent higher than a year earlier.

The quarterly lift was in line with expectations.

Regarding wage inflation, Stats NZ’s said private sector wage inflation rose 0.3 per cent in the quarter for a 1.9 per cent annual increase.

Public sector wage inflation was up 0.3 per cent in the quarter for a 1.5 per cent annual gain, and

across both sectors, wage inflation rose a quarterly 0.3 per cent and an annual 1.8 per cent.

Part of the lift is due to the $2 billion pay equity settlement for care and support workers that came into effect last July and if that was stripped out total wage inflation would have lifted 1.6 per cent, Stats NZ said.

The Reserve Bank releases its monetary policy statement next week and is widely expected to keep interest rates on hold at a record low 1.75 per cent.

The market was largely unfazed by the data with the New Zealand dollar trading around 69.95 US cents after the data versus 69.96 US cents as at 8am in Wellington.

While the headline unemployment number is lower, a record inflow of migrants over the past several years has given employers a large pool of labour to choose from, which has helped limit wage inflation.

The participation rate eased to 70.8 from 71 per cent in the December quarter as growth in the labour force was outpaced by growth in the working age population.

The under-utilisation rate, which measures the country’s potential labour supply and unmet need for work, fell 0.3 percentage points from the prior quarter to 11.9 per cent.

Total actual weekly hours worked rose 1.7 per cent in the quarter to 88.7 million and were up 4.9 per cent on the year.

The quarterly employment survey, also released yesterday, showed private sector ordinary time average hourly earnings rose 1.1 per cent to $28.92 in the March quarter and were 4.0 per cent higher than a year earlier. Public sector ordinary time wages rose 1.0 per cent to $39.25 in the March quarter and were up 1.1 per cent on the year.

Housing investor activity slows in April New Zealand house value growth slowed in April in urban centres as investor activity dropped and the market heads into winter, according to state-owned valuer Quotable Value.

Residential property values nationwide increased 7.6 per cent year-on-year in April, and were up 1.1 per cent for the previous three months, to an average $679,000, QV said.

In the Auckland region, which has led gains in house prices over the past five years, prices rose 0.8 per cent on an annual basis and dropped 0.3 per cent on a quarterly basis to $1.05 million.

Recent Reserve Bank figures showed March reported the biggest value of high-LVR mortgage lending since August 2016 at $443 million and the highest monthly lending to first-home buyers at $911 million since the central bank started collecting the data. The RBNZ eased up on the loan-tovalue speed limits this year.

Within Auckland, North Shore values lifted most, up 3.2 per cent to an average $1.2 million in the year, while Manukau values dipped 0.3 per cent to $900,000.

QV Auckland senior consultant James Steele said first home buyers were making the most of a drop

in investor activity, and were trying to buy houses below $600,000 to qualify for the government’s KiwiSaver HomeStart grant, but were finding it difficult to buy houses to meet their size and location criteria.

Wellington region values rose 6.6 per cent on an annual basis to $642,000 but were down 0.3 per cent on a quarterly basis.

In Christchurch, values dropped 0.5 per cent in the year and 0.2 per cent in the quarter, to an average $493,300, while Dunedin saw house values jump 8.8 per cent annually and 3.1 per cent in the quarter to an average $404,500. – NZME

■ Heat half the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add garlic and combine. Once the garlic begins to colour lightly, add basil and tomatoes. Season the sauce with salt and pepper.

As soon as it comes to the boil, remove pan from heat.

■ Place potatoes in the bottom of an oven-proof dish. Drizzle with oil and season. Top with a third of the tomato sauce then place

the fish on top.

■ Place remaining sauce on the top, sprinkle over the breadcrumb and lemon zest mix and drizzle with a little more oil.

■ Place into the oven for 20-25 minutes or until the potato is cooked through. Serve garnished with basil and steamed peas.

Ashburton Golf Club Well it seemed the course needed a smidge of water, and it certainly got it last weekend, you could see divorce lawyers wringing their hands, as husbands and wives had to stay at home and actually talk to each other, I can’t see it catching on!

Hopefully, for sanity sake, the weather holds good for this weekend and we can try again for the Watson Cup. The draw has changed a wee bit, with two pairs dropping out and a couple of subs coming in.

The game dates just move back a week on the calendar, so the semi-final will now be on May 19, which was the original date for the final, and the final will be played on a date agreed by all four finalists.

On Sunday the under pressure Patterson Cup pennants team, have an early chance for redemption, playing against Mayfield at Methven.

With two unnamed players still suffering from recent gunshot wounds, we have called up the dynamic duo of Arkwright and the Flying Dutchman, to bolster the team, so I think the win can be chalked up already.

One positive from the first game though, is that the fines coffers are overflowing.

At this rate we could be going to Fiji for our end of season meal!

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Trevor Gamblin welcomed 11 members to our April meeting. Our guest speaker Robyn Kilworth from Trotts Charitable Trust spoke of how the trust was an idea among a group of friends 2½ years ago. With the help of some community minded generous benefactors the Charitable Trust was formed.

Since taking over the garden on September 15, 2017 they have doubled the number of tours and weddings this year.

They have 65 volunteers for gardening, lawn mowing, catering and meet and greet.

Later this year the garden will be assessed to regain its Garden of International Significance title.

The trust has recently launched Friends of Trotts Garden.

Thursday, May 3, 2018 Ashburton MSA Petanque Club This month started with the playing of the Ashburton Triples and this was won by the three Christchurch players who won it last year. Richard Browne and his team mates were runners-up.

Three Ashburton players were 3 = in this section and two were in the teams that were runners-up in the plate doing very well against top Canterbury players.

April 14, 11 of our players took part in the Autumn Drawn Triples at Ascot which is always a popular venue. This was won

by Jonathan Crum, and Neville Bensdorp from Ashburton with Pat O’ Shea from Christchurch. Runners-up were Karen Bensdorp (Ashburton) Marj Vincent (Papanui) and Ron Paterson (Ascot).

In fact most of our players came home with a placing.

April 15, we had a social day in Timaru and eight of our players took part in this very enjoyable day.

Wet weather prevented us from holding our club mixed doubles which will be slotted in somewhere next month.

Twelve members took the opportunity to have coaching lessons from a top coach from Thailand, and very worthwhile it was too. We just need to remember what we learned and put it into practise.

Ashburton Photographic Society The start of the year for the Ashburton Photographic Society has been very busy.

Our first meeting started with a very interesting talk by Andrea Chalmers. She described her treks around the world.

She was very inspiring her stories of places we have only seen in pictures.

Our first field trip of the year was to Digby’s Bridge; just taking photos under the bridge we found so many interesting things. Following that we headed to the Chinese Village on Allens Road.

Our Open Learning Night in March took us all back to basics. A refresher for us all that covered everything from holding the camera, to Composition of the image. It was a good reminder for every member that attended.

In India a salt tax had existed for hundreds of years but was greatly increased

by The British East India Company. The Indian East Coast produced fine quality salt along the coast of Orissa. In the 1840s a ‘thorn fence’ was created as a Customs Line, it eventually stretched 2500 miles long filling the Government coffers with a huge revenue until stopped in 1879.

Many place names given an indication of their previous importance with regard to salt eg sal (Salzburg) and wich (Droitwich, Nantwich, Middlewich) to name a few.

Salt: the Planet cannot live without it and too much of it is harmful however, having refined our ability to get as much as we need, we have created another problem – water. In part due to the desalination of salt leaving a brine which is then returned to the ocean resulting in the oceans becoming saltier. Finding a use for the brine is a global issue. By 2050 more than half the world population will live in areas that are water stressed.

A day seminar on the History of Salt brought sixty members and guests to the April meeting to hear Freida Looser‘s interesting presentation. She was welcomed by Edith Smith.

Highly prized throughout antiquity, salt is the only rock eaten by humans. A mineral composed of sodium chloride, halite/rock salt in its natural form is a crystaline mineral.

Plants need small amounts though animals and humans require more for survival. On average the world‘s oceans contain 35 grams of salts per litre of water. Salt has been used in food preservation since the Neolithic Age in agro/ pastoral societies (6-5000BC). The Chinese were harvesting salt 6000BC and the Egyptians exporting the valuable commodity by 3000BC. Salt was also used in the preservation of the Egyptian Mummies.

By 800BC the European Celts were trading salt for wine and other luxuries. Of importance to the Romans, by 100BC enormous camel caravans were bringing salt across the Sahara to Rome. A soldier‘s salary might be cut if he was “not worth his salt“.

Brine was valued in a similar way to land where one share of 6912 grams equalled 8 tons of salt, an important article of trade. Hefty taxes were levied as it was a commodity regarded as white gold.

Merv Peck welcomed 13 members to the April meeting. Merv mentioned that the club had a team of turners for the South Island Funday May 12 in Oamaru run by the Waitaki Woodturning Club.

At this event three turners have 20 minutes, each, to turn a bowl. The challenge being that the next two bowls are required to be similar to the first turned bowl, without the use of a measure device. The next three turners are to turn a square bowl. The best looking bowls take home the Tina Turner Trophy, won by the Ashburton club the previous year.

A moment’s silence was held for past member Blair Stringer who recently passed away.

John Smart gave us a demo how he was going to tackle turning a four corner bowl. It seemed simple enough without pressure, but it’s on the day with many others watching that errors occur.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club New President Val Dellow welcomed everyone to the meeting held in the Doris Linton lounge at the RSA on April 23 at 9.45am.

Visitors were welcomed and several birthdays were acknowledged including a new octogenarian. Condolences were given to those who had lost loved ones.

There were ten apologies. Correspondence included a resignation and the invitation to the 4th AGM of the Friendship Clubs to be held August 29. Any remits are to be sent in by June 4.

Treasurer reported the new subs were now due.

A new member was then inducted and welcomed to the club. The raffles were won by Monica Barnes and Vera Smollett.

Before morning tea we were entertained by Lorraine and Marlene who told us about the trials they and two other friends had had on a recent cruise. Their troubles began on the flight to Australia to join the cruise when the air crew appeared to be quarrelling.

They arrived at Sydney airport late.

Finding a taxi was difficult and then they had multiple difficulties getting to their hotel room on the 14th floor of the hotel.

One of them tripped over the suitcases

in the dark and sprained an ankle and with little help from the management, the last straw was finding out that they had been given two double beds.

Determined not to miss the cruise they set out the next day in the heat of Sydney to join the ship The Radiance of the Sea. They stopped in Brisbane and Cairns and then unfortunately one of the ladies became unwell and had to leave the cruise.

They had 15mins to pack up their belongings for her to leave. After spending a night in Darwin Hospital she went to her friend’s hotel from where they were flown to Perth and eventually back to NZ. They later learned that the ship had been taken out of service.

The main speakers for the day were May, Aine and Pam who told us of their experiences organising the Fuchsiarama for the NZ Fuchsia Society. It is held every second year over four days and people come from all over NZ to attend.

They thought it would be a good chance to show case Ashburton and the surrounding districts.

They had to work out the programme, find venues and approach people willing to take part. They soon discovered what great assets Ashburton has to offer and what talented folk we have in our district.

They started with Hotel Ashburton and over 9 months sorted a theme, venues, bus trips and printing of invitations, advertising, raffles grab-bags and baking to make sure everyone had a quality experience.

It all came together nicely and thanks to a hard working committee the whole experience went off according to plan and all the visitors who came enjoyed a wonderful time in our district.

They were thanked for sharing their experiences with us. Next meeting is May 28.

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury So much going on at the moment that this is my fourth attempt at this contribution.

Since individual scores are published elsewhere I will avoid them this week even though there were some pretty awesome numbers.

Last weekend saw the inaugural Mid Canterbury open championship, shot over two 20 shot matches which is pretty heavy going so early in the season.

The organisers were pleasantly surprised at the attendance with shooters coming in strength from down south, Dunedin, Outram and Oamaru and from Blenheim, North Canterbury and one shooter all the way from Nelson.

We also welcomed Colleen Lee from Dunedin, a life member of T.S.N.Z. Denva Wren (Paparua) took out the top 10 scoring 198.11 from Nina McKenzie 197.8.

The Master grade was won by Rachel McLaren (Nelson) 394.14 from Lanelle McArthur 393.26.

Gordon Wright (Culverden) 392.26 was A grade champion from Nina McKenzie 390.21.

Emma Smith produced the performance of the day to win the B grade with a top score of 395.17 including her first ever possible 100, from Colin Taylor 392.17.

Nikki Bradley (Arthur Barnetts) won the C grade 386.9 from our own Keith Bonnington 373.9.

The strong support from the southern associations was not lost on local shooters and a rapid revision of schedules will see a significant number of our championship shooters travelling to Dunedin this weekend for the Combined Otago champs.

Also this week the newly formed Titans N.D.C. team will have a pipe opener with friendly matches against the Auckland Jaffas and the Southland Centurions.

These matches in this competition will be a first at this level for many of our members and we expect big things ahead.

Such is the growth of the Phoenix club that the coaches, provided by Coronation to assist the new club, are stretched to transition the number of new shooters off the rest and into the sling and results this week indicate that there will be no slowing down.

It is said that success comes at a price but I think it fair to say that not a single member of Coronation will begrudge the effort. Well done team!

In brief Plea for weed Running back Mike James hurts all over. He experiences chronic pain every day, a natural by-product of his chosen profession. Still, he is not yet ready to walk away from his NFL career and says he knows the key to continuing: marijuana.

James, an NFL free agent, applied for a marijuana therapeutic-use exemption (TUE) from the league this off-season, which he hoped would allow him to treat his pain without fear of violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

The league denied his request last week, which James said jeopardises his ability to sign with a team and continue his career.

The Black Caps’ rise above Australia in the International Cricket Council test rankings has been short lived. New Zealand moved into third following their test series win over England last month at Australia’s expense, after they lost a test series to South Africa. However, results from the 2014-2015 season have since been removed from the ranking equation, with those from the past two seasons now given extra weight. It means Australia moves back into third and New Zealand drops to fourth.

Canberra’s off-contract five-eighth Blake Austin wants to remain with the Raiders next year, declaring he would love to stay in the nation’s capital. The 27-year-old knocked back a deal from the club last year, believed to be $1.4 million over two years but, in April, he said money wasn’t the reason for turning it down. Barker to helm NYYC entry Dean Barker will have another tilt at the America’s Cup, this time helming the New York Yacht Club’s entry.

American Magic sailing boss Terry Hutchinson confirmed Barker would be on the wheel for the 2021 event in Auckland and other Kiwis Joe Spooner, Jim Turner and Sean Clarkson would also be in the crew.

“There’s certain people that I’ve raced with, that regardless of the situation, I have a heap of respect for even though they’re competitors. Dean is one of them,’’ Hutchinson told sailing website Scuttlebutt.

“When we look at the opportunity that’s in front of us, and the experience that’s required to get one of these boats around the race course, there’s not many people in the world that have Dean’s level of experience.

“For the role as one of the helmsmen for the team, that person needs to have big boats experience, they need to have foiling experience, and they need to have event experience. There’s maybe four people in the world that tick all three of those boxes.”

Warriors announce new owners Vodafone Warriors executive chairman Jim Doyle confirmed yesterday that after working with various interested parties, both within New Zealand and internationally, over the past few months the club has been sold to Carlaw Heritage Trust, and Autex Industries Limited.

The sale sees the Vodafone Warriors become formally integrated into New Zealand’s rugby league landscape.

Founded in 1909 and supported by the assets of Carlaw Heritage Trust, Auckland Rugby League is the governing body and administrator of the game of rugby league across the Auckland region.

It is partnering in the acquisition with Autex, a widely respected New Zealand business with a long history of supporting rugby league.

Autex were a pioneering sponsor of New Zealand’s national rugby league team in the late 1970s and 1980s and have continued to be enthusiastic supporters of rugby league.

Chiller Bay smokes the field Ashburton Racecourse trainer and driver Nigel Perkins and his horse Chiller Bay have the rest of the field well covered at the end of their qualifying heat at yesterday’s Mid Canterbury Trotting Owners Association trial meeting yesterday. A two-yearold filly by Changeover, Chiller Bay is the first foal of lightly raced broodmare, Freezer Bay who also operated out of Perkins’ barn. After stepping safely yesterday, Perkins and Chiller Bay found the lead after a few hundred metres and never looked back, sprinting over their final 800 metres in an impressive 55 seconds. Close to 120 horses went round over 18 heats at yesterday’s trials with the track showing no signs of the same issues that saw racing abandoned there on Saturday.

C A Penny wasn’t even supposed to be racing by now, so to win her second cup in a month at Palmerston North on Tuesday has come as a real bonus for her connections.

The Blenheim mare was too strong for a small but select field in the $10,000 Wairarapa Cup, leading throughout in the hands of Jim Curtin.

Trainer Allan Shutkowski expected his now seven-year-old mare by Pay Me Christian to be in the breeding paddock by this stage, but nature didn’t play its part.

“We tried to get her in foal to Art Major before Christmas and during early January.

“But probably because she was in work and the sire himself was having fertility issues, it never happened.

“So, we thought, oh well, we’ll go on until the end of the season.”

She won’t race next term and there are probably no more than four races left in her career.

“She’s in again at Manawatu on Thursday (today) and then we might go down and do a couple of races at Addington – it’s a track that suits her better as she tends to tip her head a bit up here.

“We’ll play it by ear and see how she goes, but we will definitely give her plenty of time to let down through winter.”

The Ashburton Trotting Club will resurface its track following the abandonment of their meeting on Saturday.

Surface a soggy failure The Ashburton Trotting Club will be looking to resurface their track immediately in the wake of Saturday’s embarrassing abandonment from which they came under heavy fire from industry participants.

Racing was abandoned for the day before the first race was run after concerns were raised about surface water on the track and also the condition of the racing surface following constant rain in the 12 hours proceeding the start of the meeting.

But while some were quick to point the finger at club employees, the Ashburton Trotting Club – after consultation with Harness Racing New Zealand had decided that the surface itself isn’t suitable

for the Mid Canterbury environment after it was changed to a more sand-based surface a few years ago to fall into line with other clubs around the South Island who had taken a similar approach.

“We used to race on a track that was largely made up of a crusher dust base, which obviously threw up a lot of dust,” president Craig Harrison said.

“So in an effort to alleviate that issue we moved to a more sandbased surface which negated that dust issue but obviously comes with its own problems when there’s rain about.

“It seems to be more of an issue when it is a light rain like we had on Friday night, it’s not heavy enough to break down the sand

base and drain away, so it sits on the surface.”

Harrison met with track specialist John Denton earlier this week and the decision has been made to return to a crusher dust base at the soonest possible point.

The introduction of new racing surfaces around the South Island, starting with Addington and Forbury – as well as the addition of conditioning tracks has without doubt improved the quality of racing on good days, but it has had an opposite impact on days where the weather has not been quite as kind.

In recent seasons, Ashburton, Addington, Forbury and Oamaru – who have all shifted to a more sand-based surface have encoun-

tered problems with surface water pooling on the track as opposed to draining away like it normally should.

Often this has come, not as a result of heavy rain, but more due to persistent light rain which is less likely to drain away.

The conditioning process is used to loosen up the racing surface and allow more give for horses, this obviously has a negative impact when the track is wet. The Ashburton track was conditioned on the Tuesday prior to the meeting but then after weather forecast suggested rain for the weekend it was heavy rolled on Thursday for up to three hours.

Word spread like wildfire on the weekend that the track was con-

ditioned on Thursday as well, but both the Ashburton Trotting Club and the Racing Integrity Unit were quick to dispel that rumour.

“Our track manager did condition the track on Tuesday, but it was most definitely not conditioned on Thursday,” president Craig Harrison said.

“However, it would be easy to see how someone would think that was the case when the same piece of machinery is used to do both jobs. The conditioner also acts as a roller when the spikes are taken out of it and that’s what was occurring on Thursday.

“Someone has seen that happening and just presumed that the track was being conditioned which was certainly not the case.”
