NZTA nixes road change BY SUSAN SANDYS

Traffic on Thompsons Track has sky-rocketed, but NZTA says it has not increased enough to be reclassified as a State Highway. NZ Transport Agency highways manager Colin Knaggs said yesterday the agency had a criteria by which a local road could be reclassified. “For example, a road like Thompsons Track would need
to have more than 3000 vehicles per day or 400 heavy commercial vehicles per day, to be considered,” Knaggs said. “Currently we understand traffic volumes are considerably lower than these qualifying thresholds.” Data released by the Ashburton District Council shows average daily traffic on Thompsons Track is 1259 vehicles per day, with heavy commercial vehicles
214 per day, according to measurements in 2016 near the Tramway Road intersection. The figures represent a 20 and 166 per cent increase respectively since 2008. Another section of Thompsons Track has seen an even greater increase of heavy vehicles, of 220 per cent. The council has been turned down repeatedly in its request to have the road reclassified as
a State Highway, and is likely to be out of luck once again when it addresses the issue when it meets with the agency again later this month. Increased heavy vehicle use is being blamed for wear and tear on rural roads. The council’s contractor is working as quickly as possible to repair dangerous potholes in some areas exacerbated by recent wet weather. Other roads which have seen
a large increase in heavy vehicle traffic in Mid Canterbury include Isleworth Road at 458 per cent, Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road at 192 per cent, and Tinwald Westerfield Mayfield Road at 139 per cent.
