Stubble fires burn en masse
BY MICHELLE NELSON
MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Stubble fires blazed in record numbers across Mid Canterbury yesterday morning, as arable farmers took advantage of perfect conditions to clear paddocks of crop residue. A Canterbury-wide fire ban, imposed in the wake of the Port Hills fire two weeks ago, forced many farmers to hold off on burn-offs, which are an integral part of crop rotations on arable farms. The total fire ban was replaced by a restricted fire season on March 1. Under the restricted status burn-offs can take place in daylight hours, before 1pm. All other
outdoor burning requires a permit, issued by the Ashburton District Council. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury arable industry spokesperson Joanne Burke said many farmers had taken advantage of perfect weather conditions to burn a backlog of crop residue in a controlled setting. The effort was co-ordinated and approved by the ADC, Federated Farmers and local fire services, with the intent of lessening pressure on already exhausted firefighters, many of whom had been battling the Christchurch blaze. “The sheer number of fires concentrated into two hours would have come as a
surprise to some people,” Burke said. “It was a sight never before seen and probably won’t ever be seen again.” All the burn-offs were incredibly clean and over very quickly. Everyone involved had complied with Crop Residue Code of Practice, and the 1pm curfew, she said. Mid South Canterbury deputy principal fire officer Don Geddes said the fire season status would be reviewed on a day-today basis. The restricted fire season will remain in place until further notice. Farmers are responsible for checking for changes of status on the Ashburton District Council website before lighting fires.
