ICONIC PUB SAVED FROM FIRE By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
One of Canterbury’s most iconic watering holes had a close escape yesterday after a potentially disastrous fire brought its small rural town to a halt. Methven’s The Brown Pub suffered a serious fire in the roof at the north-west end of the build-
ing, but what locals are describing as an enormous effort from firefighters, saved the almost 100-year-old building from irreparable damage. A call to emergency services was received around 9.20am and Methven volunteer fire chief, Brent Anderson was quick to call for back-up.
“I called for the second alarm as soon as we were out the doors. It was a no-brainer, it was always going to be difficult to get at with it being a two-storey building and with no visible fire through it made it difficult to get at,” he said. The fire was contained to the roof space of the building, which made it a challenging fight for the
firefighters who had minimal access through man-holes and the roofing iron. “We had to cut our own manhole so we could access the roof space and we did what we could,” he said. “No rooms were fire damaged, they were just water damaged. “The guys did a good job.”
