Woman, children fou BY SUE NEWMAN AND DAISY HUDSON A woman and three young children were found dead yesterday afternoon at a property in Tinwald’s Thomson Street. St John were called to the address at 3.43pm, and police soon after, to what was believed to have been a cardiac arrest. But when they entered the property there was a smell of gas and the fire service was called. Mid-South Canterbury police area commander inspector Dave Gaskin would release few details about the deaths, saying “it would be irresponsible to speculate how the deaths happened at this stage”. He did confirm, however, that the alarm was raised by the people who usually lived at the address who returned home after being away for some time. When they entered the house they smelled what they thought was LPG, Mr Gaskin said. Fire services staff entered the building and were able to ascertain there was no LPG or other gas inside, he said. Mr Gaskin confirmed that

the people who discovered the bodies were relatives of the deceased. No weapons were found at the scene and while there were no indications that foul play was involved, police had to keep an open mind because they were dealing with four deaths, he said. The deaths had been referred to the coroner and the bodies are unlikely to be moved until today.
Thomson Street between Wilkins and Manchester streets has been cordoned off and the cordon remained in place overnight. By late evening yesterday hazardous chemical vehicles, fire crews and police were still on site. In the early stages of the tragedy, police from Ashburton, Timaru and Christchurch were
at the scene along with fire service crews and St John ambulance. Neighbours Karen and Mike Farrell say they didn’t know the people who lived at the property but believed they had moved there over the past few weeks. The couple were at work when the drama unfolded but Mrs Farrell said her daughter was at home and when she walked into

She believes the owner of the property lived out of town and said since they had lived in the area, the house had had several changes of tenants. “Sometimes he lets it to a couple of families,” she said. Like others in the neighbourhood, Mrs Farrell said that while she was aware of the tragedy, she knew very few details.
Other neighbours spoken to at the scene said they too had smelled gas and that police had urged them to stay indoors. It was an upsetting situation for people in the area, said Jeremy McKenzie whose mother lives near the property. Jade Coley, who lives a few doors down the street, said it was “scary not knowing what was happening.”
It is believed relatives of the dead people were talking with police last night. Police have a team of 30 staff working at the scene including investigators and forensic staff, Mr Gaskin said. “This is a tragedy and there are a number of questions we are looking for answers for. “Our thoughts are with the family at this time.”
As darkness fell on Thomson Street last night, the only people left in the glow of the blue and red police lights were emergency service personnel and media. Just a few hours before – tragically – the usually quiet Tinwald street was alive with dreadful activity. Emergency services arrived to respond to what they thought was a cardiac arrest. The scene they found was much more tragic. Three children and an adult were dead. By late last night, the cause of death was still unclear. As late afternoon turned to evening, the crowd of frightened and anxious onlookers swelled. Police, firefighters and ambulance staff were tight-lipped, busy dealing with what unfolded in what was once a nondescript home. A cordon was drawn across the road, between Wilkin Street and Manchester Street, preventing people returning home. And preventing onlookers from seeing more. Police asked people behind the cordon whether they had smelled gas, whether they were okay, and asked them to stay inside. Bystanders could do nothing but watch and wait behind a strip of police tape as a convoy of grim-faced officers continued to arrive. Soon, the rumour mill kicked

into overdrive. Unconfirmed reports and speculation lit up social media and news sites, adding to the fears of the people nearest the scene. Journalists and camera crews arrived in their droves to cover a situation that was still rapidly unfolding. The officers at the cordon had the unenviable task of responding to the questions and concerns of the ever-expanding crowd. While the questions varied, the answers were almost always the same: “we can’t say anything”. Many in the crowd shared their concerns with reporters, saying they were scared for family and friends behind the cordon – people some struggled to contact. Fear turned to shock, and to grief, when it was confirmed four people were dead. This was compounded when it was confirmed three of the dead were children. People, perhaps relatives of the dead, were ushered from the crowd to waiting police cars. Obvious devastation was etched across their faces. A hazardous materials unit passed through the cordon and personnel wearing breathing apparatus entered the property. And as darkness fell, people at the cordon began to drift away. Police and fire crews continued their work into the night. Across town at the police station, a family was having a conversation none would ever hope to have.

In brief Email leak inquiry A Waikato high school is carrying out two investigations as to how an email revealing alleged family violence was accidentally sent to students. The school confirmed it was working with “outside agencies” to provide wraparound support for one of its students when the incident occurred. The administrative blunder saw the email sent to all Year 13 students instead of a teacher. The school’s principal declined to elaborate on the matter yesterday and how they dealt with the family over the incident, saying it was now subject to both an internal review and a “larger investigation”. “It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.” - NZME

When Sid Bentley died, he may have been broken in spirit, heart and body, but he died surrounded by friends. Yesterday he was farewelled in a simple but sincere memorial service at Ashburton’s New Life Church by the people who had become his support network over the past five years. Church members spoke of a man few knew, a man who loved to talk, who had a rich past in the merchant navy and a man who, above all else, loved his family. Since his daughter Kirsty was murdered in late December 1989, Sid had lived with the knowledge that some people
questioned his involvement in her death, but with the church, his friends said he gained an unquestioning acceptance. His church family spoke of a man who was a hard worker, a man who loved to tell a yarn and a man who had a rich history before moving to Ashburton with wife Jill and son John in 1982. He was the son of Peter and Joy Bentley and was born in the English town of Ealing, Middlesex, where his father was mayor. As a young man he joined the merchant navy and travelled the world, meeting Jill in Timaru in 1973. The navy continued to rule their lives until 1982 when they
moved to Ashburton to begin a new life. Their daughter Kirsty was born shortly after. New Life pastor Lisa Anderson described the stories Sid told of his adventures at sea and the dangers he dodged, but when he opted for civilian life his family became his life, she said. “Sid loved his children and carried a photo of them in his wallet to this day.” She also described him as a generous man who became known as the lemon man within the church. “He was famous for the lemons he grew and he was a good example of making lemonade when you have too many lemons – and Sid’s life had its fair
share of lemons,” she said. Until he found the church, Sid was a sad and lonely man, Mrs Anderson said, but in the church he found a family. “He may have been cursed with cancer, but he was blessed with friends,” pastor Carl Anderson said. In a fitting tribute to the “lemon man”, much of the food at the after service luncheon featured lemons from Sid’s garden. It is believed his body has been cremated. His wish was to have his ashes scattered with his daughter’s but this has been challenged by his ex-wife, Kirsty’s mother Jill.

Seventeen years ago a 15-yearold Kirsty Bentley was murdered, her body was cremated and her ashes were buried in a memorial garden in her family’s backyard. Over the years her parents divorced, with her father Sid remaining in the family home, caring for the garden plot that held their daughter’s remains. Her mother remarried and moved to Invercargill. This week Mr Bentley died
and his body was cremated. His dying wish was that his ashes were scattered with those of his daughter. Kirsty’s mum Jill, however, claims her daughter’s ashes belong with her and is believed to have travelled to Ashburton to collect the urn in which they are contained. The Guardian sought a legal opinion on the future of Kirsty’s ashes and while it is difficult to find legal precedent, solicitor Alister Argyle believes the future of the urn of ash legally lies with the surviv-
ing parent. Because Kirsty was just 15 at the time of her death, her parents were her executors as her guardians. Jointly they decided she would remain at her home and today her surviving parent is still her executor, Mr Argyle said. After yesterday’s memorial service Mr Bentley’s will was read. New Life Church pastor Lisa Anderson, a close friend of Mr Bentley’s was present when the will was read and while she could not talk details, she con-
firmed the church and “another charity” were among the beneficiaries. “We are keen to stop the rumours that everything has been left to us; this is not correct,” she said. The Public Trust is the administrator of Mr Bentley’s will. Rumours were also circulating that the church was holding Kirsty’s ashes but it did not and had never had those in its possession, Mrs Anderson said.
A 25-year-old woman is in custody after the death of a 67-year-old man in a “tragic” family dispute, police say. A boy aged 9, a relative of the woman now in custody, was among the victims of the stabbing spree. The incident spilled over into a neighbouring Johnsonville property on Wednesday night where another woman was stabbed, Detective Senior Sergeant John Van Der Heuevel said. The woman has not yet been charged and is in being kept in a separate hospital from two victims who were also hospitalised. One of the hospitalised victims was the 9-year-old boy and the other a 45-year-old woman. - NZME
ACC levy shock A Wellington yoga instructor was shocked to find she was stung by ACC at the same rate as business owners in bone-crunching impact sports such as rugby. Sadhana yoga director Alison Tilley discovered private yoga instructors pay the same ACC levy rates as rugby, netball and downhill skiing. She would like to see people such as her charged at a rate better reflecting the cost of the industry. Every business and self-employed person is given a classification by ACC to determine how much they pay in levies. Outside gyms, yoga is grouped with “sports and physical recreation instruction”, requiring private instructors to fork out $1.37 in levies for every $100 they earn. Health and fitness centres, such as gyms, pay only 70 cents, including for the yoga classes they offer. - NZME
Charges possible Conservation Minister Maggie Barry says Ngapuhi leader Sonny Tau can expect to face legal consequences if he is found to have broken the law after being found with several protected kereru. Ms Barry said the Department of Conservation was giving priority to the investigation, now in its third week, but it was “complex.” She had not been briefed on the details of it and would not expect that to happen until it was complete. “We need to be very careful to ensure we can find and track all the activities, peel away the anecdotal, and get to and stick with the facts. The next five years in the Ashburton District’s tourism sector will be one of tremendous growth, says Experience Mid Canterbury’s departing general manager Nigel Birt. Yesterday Mr Birt resigned from the position he has held for six and a half years and said the tourism organisation was in a good space to take advantage of what he predicts will be a very strong few years in the sector. The organisation has restruc-
tured, is now run by a board, has relocated to a new home in the Ashburton Information Centre, has secured funding for the future from the Ashburton District Council and that means it’s in very good heart, Mr Birt said. “We’re at a good point in the life of the organisation, the house is very much in order now and it’s time for someone else to come in and give it a new flavour.” While he has no firm plans for the future, Mr Birt said he is keen to get back into the public
sector and to work with Methven businesses. He’s also keen to work with bike groups to create links between Methven and the large bike park planned for Christchurch’s Port Hills. “The time is right for me to hand over the reins and I look forward to seeing the organisation continue to implement the changes it’s worked towards, build stronger relationships with inbound operators and increase visitor numbers,” he said. Chairman of the Experience
Mid Canterbury Board, Dr Dominic Moran, said Mr Birt had made a huge contribution to the organisation during his years at the helm. “Nigel has managed the organisation through considerable transition and he is leaving at a time when council longterm plan funding is in place. The organisation now has a robust structure, clear strategic direction, and is operating efficiently,” he said. The position of general manager will be advertised in the coming weeks.

New snow warning Mid Canterbury farmers will be battening down the hatches and moving stock to sheltered areas with a significant snow dump flagged for midway through next week. Blue Skies Weather and Climate Services have reported a trough of low pressure will move over the region about Tuesday, followed by a very cold south to southeast airflow on Wednesday and Thursday. While it is too early to predict snow accumulations and locations, falls of at least 30-50cm are possible above 200m, and more at higher levels. Snowfalls to sea level are also on the cards, with a chance of 10-20cm accumulating over several days. The first low level snow could be seen on Tuesday night with the heaviest falls currently indicated for next Wednesday and Thursday. While the forecast could change over the next few days, the event currently on the radar has the potential to significantly impact transport around the region, and cause serious issues for farmers with stock.

Excitement is building towards the opening of the Ashburton Society of Arts annual exhibition, the first in the new Ashburton Art Gallery. The exhibition is an annual highlight on the district’s arts calendar, and sees a wide range of top quality works for sale, many of which sell quickly on opening night. It also sees winning artists awarded prestigious prizes on the night. Society president Pauline Mead said receiving day on Friday last week had been exciting in itself. “It’s sort of like Christmas, you don’t know what you’re getting,” Mrs Mead said. More than 100 artists from throughout New Zealand have entered, on a par with last year. Receiving day is when the artists bring their work to the gallery and they are checked off by society members. Work has been entered in the categories of painting, applied art, craft and photography, and all are for sale, ranging in price

A 16-year-old girl bravely fought her attacker as she was indecently assaulted in an alleyway in Taradale on Thursday night. The alleged attack took place at about 6.45pm as she was walking through the alleyway joining Meeanee Road and Oxford Street. The teen was grabbed by a man, thrown against a fence and indecently assaulted. Police said she bravely fought him of nearby. The man found dead in an Auckland home on Thursday was a 19-year-old from Whanganui. Police have named the murder victim as Shane Paul Hawe-Wilson. His body was found in a home in Panmure yesterday morning. Police said the post-mortem examination has been completed and Mr Hawe-Wilson’s body has been returned to his family, members of whom have travelled to Auckland from Whanganui. Police allege Mr Hawe-Wilson was viciously attacked at the Panmure address where he died and have charged a 35 year-old Balmoral man with his murder. - NZME

Politicians on both sides of the house have ruled out revisiting a ban on live sheep exports for slaughter despite the success of a recent shipment of breeding stock to Mexico. Some farmers have called for the ban on live exports for slaughter to be revisited following the Mexican shipment of 45,000 sheep and 3200 cattle that left the Timaru Port last month. According to the Ministry for Primary Industries a total of 191 sheep and one cow died on the journey – 0.42 per cent and 0.03 per cent respectively of the sheep and cattle in the shipment. However Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy has flatly ruled out any possibility of revisiting the ban, which was introduced in 2009. Labour’s primary industries spokesman Damien O’Connor has also come out against lift-

ing the ban, saying now would be the worst time to consider it given problems in the meat industry. “The dysfunction in the meat industry is due in large part to a declining number of sheep and the inefficiency of many of the processing plants,” he
said. “The competition for the declining number of lambs and sheep has created sometimes overpayments for stock and losses to be incurred that long term is not in the best interests of the farmers or the processors.” He was also cautious about
hailing the Mexican shipment as a success. “This is a one-off shipment,” he said. “We’ve had initial reports that are positive but we need detailed and credible reports on the animals and what happens to them over the next 12 months.” Federated Farmers Meat and Fibre Industry Group Chairperson Rick Powdrell said some farmers were calling for the ban to be reviewed, but that was in the government’s hands. “The big issues in the past regarding shipments for slaughter were getting the stock to the destination with an acceptable death rate, and it would appear that we probably can, and the other issue was how humanely they would be handled when they arrived,” he said. “There’s a whole lot of factors that have to be considered and ticked off.”
Fatal collision A person is dead after a crash between a car and truck on State Highway One near Cambridge yesterday. Police said the crash happened at 3.07pm on SH1 about three kilometres west of Cambridge. Traffic was diverted off the highway around the scene. The investigation into the crash is continuing, police said. - NZME
Scooter theft An 86-year-old man’s mobility scooter was stolen from outside the Hokitika Chartered Club on Tuesday night. Sergeant Russell Glue, of Hokitika police, appealed for public help to track down the “low-life” thief. The elderly owner discovered the theft when he went to leave the club. Police were shocked at the incident and the impact it had on the man. The scooter was found near the Hokitika Airport yesterday, stuck in mud. - NZME

Hairdresser makes nationals cut BY HANNAH CUNNINGHAM JOURNALISM STUDENT
An Ashburton woman will represent the Canterbury/Westland region at the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers’ supreme competition in Auckland. DNA Hairdressing style director Kylee Hurst won the men and women’s senior stylist cut section and was third in the colour senior stylist at the recent regional competition. The section win secured her place in the four-strong team bound for the supreme competition in October. Being named a winner – and securing a place in the team – left Mrs Hurst “blown away”. “It was very, very cool. “I kept thinking maybe I should have changed this and maybe I should have changed that, I was quite judgemental on myself.” She has been a competition regular for nine years and she enjoyed the challenge. “I love taking part in competitions. All of us girls really get into it,” Mrs Hurst said. “We all brainstorm new ideas for competitions and support each other, everyone gets a buzz from it.” The supreme team competitions are every second year. “The pressure and the competition is a lot higher because everyone wants to be on the supreme team, Mrs Hurst said. The rest of the DNA team performed well, too. Makeup artist Caron Shanks was first in the makeup event; stylist Amber Ward was second in the colour next generation section and senior stylist Kelly Reeves was fourth in the style senior stylist section.

In brief Warning on ‘no’ vote The head of the eurozone finance ministers’ group, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, says it will be “incredibly difficult” to build a new bailout package for Greece if the country votes “no” in Sunday’s referendum. Speaking yesterday in a parliamentary committee, Dijsselbloem told lawmakers, “If the result is a ‘no,’ what foundation is there of ownership? And how can you then accept such a programme if the result is ‘no.’ So it will be incredibly difficult.” The Dutch finance minister put the blame squarely on the Greek government for promoting a ‘no’ vote with unrealistic expectations. He said: “The Greek government is rejecting everything with the suggestion that if you vote ‘no’ you will get a better or less tough, or more friendly package. That suggestion is simply wrong.” - AP
Train derailment Authorities in Tennessee say at least one train car carrying a toxic gas has derailed and caught fire, prompting an evacuation within 1.6 kilometres of the scene. Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesman Dean Flener says there have been no fatalities. A high school has been set up as a shelter for residents who have no other place to go. - AP

Twelve held in attack probe About 12 people have been detained in the investigation into a massacre at a beach resort that killed 38 people, mostly British tourists, a Tunisian official said. Tunisia’s Radio Mosaique reported yesterday that Lazhar Akremi, a senior official with the ruling Nida Tounes party, made the announcement at a party meeting. The report
did not elaborate on when or where the arrests occurred. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for last week’s attack, in which Tunisian student Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire on a beach in the resort of Sousse. The attacker was later killed by police. Investigators are searching nationwide for accomplices. A person close to the investiga-
tion said on Monday seven had been detained in the probe. At least 27 Britons and other European tourists are confirmed among the dead. A top security official said the student had trained in a jihadi camp in Libya at the same time as the two men who attacked a leading Tunisian museum in March. That enforced the notion of
a link between the two assaults and raised fears of more attacks on this North African nation’s budding democracy. The attack was Tunisia’s deadliest ever, and threatened to be a devastating blow to the country’s tourism sector, which is crucial to the economy and had just started recovering following Arab Spring uprisings. - AP

Court cancels death sentences in mob killing An Afghan court has overturned the death sentences for four men convicted of taking part in the shocking mob killing of a woman outside a Kabul shrine, a judge said yesterday. Three of the men convicted of the murder of Farkhunda Malikzada in March were instead given 20-year sentences, and the fourth was sentenced to 10 years, said Appeals Court Judge Abdul Nasir Murid. The ruling was made in a closed-door hearing and first reported by the independent
Tolo TV. Tolo said the court acquitted the peddler at the shrine who allegedly incited the mob by falsely accusing Malikzada of burning a Quran. The court’s decision, which has not yet been made public, has outraged her family, who said they are still waiting for justice. Lawmakers and activists also criticized the decision, saying the court had bowed to the conservative religious establishment and failed to uphold the rule of law.
“This is against the constitution. The courts should be open to the public, and this closeddoor hearing undermines the credibility of the sentences,” said Shukria Barakzai, a lawmaker and women’s rights advocate. The mob killing led to calls for judicial reform and stronger protection for women from violence. After the peddler at the ShahDu Shamshira shrine falsely accused Malikzada of burning a Quran, a mob attacked her as police watched.
After punching, kicking and beating her with wooden planks, the crowd threw her from a roof, ran over her with a car and crushed her with a block of concrete. They then set her body alight on the bank of the Kabul River. The attack was filmed by many people in the mob, and the footage widely distributed on social media. Of the 49 people convicted, including 19 policemen accused of dereliction of duty, 37 were released last month ahead of their appeals. - AP
A French appeals court ruled yesterday that a German producttesting company does not have to compensate more than 3000 women with leak-prone breast implants — and now the women may have to pay back more than 11 million euros ($12 million) in collective damages they received in a lower-court ruling. Tens of thousands of women worldwide received implants made by French company PIP, or Poly Implant Prothese. The implants were found to contain industrial-grade silicone instead of medical silicone and were prone to leakage. PIP’s owner was sentenced to prison for fraud, but his bankrupt company couldn’t pay damages. So the women’s lawyers sought compensation from German testing company TUV Rheinland and its French subsidiary instead. - AP
Fifa corruption probe The United States has submitted a formal request for Switzerland to extradite seven Fifa officials arrested in Zurich as part of a corruption probe that has rocked soccer’s world governing body. Switzerland’s Federal Office of Justice said yesterday that the requests were received from the US embassy in Bern. The requests met a 40-day deadline since the seven were detained early May 27 in raids on a luxury hotel in Fifa’s home city. All seven men detained in Zurich, including three current and former members of Fifa’s executive committee, have already objected to extradition. They face around 20 years in prison. The widening American investigation already alleges bribery and racketeering worth more than $150 million involving high-ranking Fifa officials over a 24-year span. The US Department of Justice published an indictment of 14 soccer and marketing officials in May. - AP

Ferry capsizes; 36 dead, 26 missing A ferry carrying 189 passengers and crew capsized yesterday minutes after it left a central Philippine port in choppy waters, leaving at least 36 dead and 26 others missing, coast guard officials said. They said at least 127 people from the M/B Kim Nirvana were rescued by nearby fishing boats and coast guard personnel or swam to safety off Ormoc city on Leyte Island. Coastguard spokesman Armand Balilo said the wooden outrigger ferry was leaving Ormoc for the Camotes Islands, about 44 kilometres to the south, when it was lashed by strong waves. He said the captain and some of the crew were rescued and are in custody pending an investigation. Survivors said by cellphone that the bow of the ferry suddenly rose from the water before the vessel flipped over on one side, turning it upside down and trapping passengers underneath. Mary Jane Drake, who was travelling with her mother and American husband, said the ferry was pulling slowly out of the port when it suddenly flipped to the left in strong waves and overturned, trapping her and other passengers. She,
her mother and husband swam to safety from underneath the ferry. “No one was able to jump out because it overturned very swiftly. There was no time to jump,” she said. Her husband, Lawrence Drake, a 48-year-old retired firefighter from Rochester, New York, said he ran to one side of the boat to try to balance it but it was too late. “I jumped out of my seat and ran to the front as far as I could, and tried to lean over. I am a big guy, and tried to push the boat back over but it was way too late,” he said. Many of the passengers were screaming in panic, he said. TV footage showed coast guard rescuers carrying survivors from rubber boats to a beach. Not far away, the bottom part of the vessel could be seen protruding from the water. Coastguard officials said it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the accident. Cloudy weather at the time of the accident did not pose any danger that would have forced the coast guard to stop sea voyages, they said. - AP

Amnesia woman identified Ashley Menatta was a free spirit who wandered the globe, including making regular trips to Australia. Over the decades it wasn’t odd for her to lose contact with family members for long periods. That’s why when she was discovered on February 1 with amnesia, no identification and stricken with cancer on a street corner near San Diego, there were few clues and no missing persons reports. Doctors diagnosed her with stagethree cancer, removed a volleyball-sized tumour from her ovary and were also forced to take out her uterus and other organs. For six months she relied on nursing staff and other strangers for
help as she underwent chemotherapy, not knowing who she was and fearing she would die before the mystery was solved. Through social media, the mystery was solved on Wednesday. A nephew of Ms Menatta’s saw a story about the woman, recognised her photo and checked with family members. They contacted police who then alerted the FBI. The FBI put the family members in contact with Ms Menatta. “They were able to have some private communications and based on that she is self-identifying herself as Ashley Menatta,” FBI special agent Darrell Foxworth said. - AAP

Which way for ECan? Stu Oldham

W
e are still waiting for the final word on how Environment Canterbury will be governed, but there is already misplaced concern that the provinces will have too much of a say. It was widely speculated that the Government would confirm ECan’s governance structure when it unveiled its way forward for the Christchurch and Canterbury rebuild yesterday. The announcement didn’t come, but when it does it will make clear whether the Government will stick to its preferred option of having seven elected members and six appointees on the new-look council. The Ashburton District Council supports a mix of elected and appointed members but wants eight to be elected and five to be picked by the Government, ahead of full democracy in 2019. The council – wisely – recognises the fully-appointed ECan has made significant strides where the old, fully elected and urban-centric ECan proved sectionalised and moribund. But the need to safeguard the successes of the past five years have been lost on some in Christchurch and their views have found a voice in Labour’s Wigram MP Megan Woods. The party’s environment says the possible mix of four city councillors and one each from Mid Canterbury, and South and North Canterbury, disadvantages the city. She’s called the proposed split “blatant gerrymandering” to “ensure rural interests are heard over the city of Christchurch”. A water irrigation agenda threatens to have an influence, she says. There is no doubt that full democracy is preferable but the proposal she rails against remains the best option to consolidate the gains of a council that affects the provinces and the city alike. The proposed mix recognises the city, but also recognises the city cannot hold sway over an entire region. To allow this risks focusing policy and management on where the votes are. The clear majority of elected members – eight of the 14 – in the last, fully-elected council were appointed by Christchurch voters. Look where that left us.

I
was flat out (nothing new there) yesterday prepping my radio show for this morning and I came across this, on this day in 1971: American singer, songwriter and poet, Jim Morrison of The Doors was found dead in a bathtub in Paris, France, the cause of death was given as a heart attack. He co-wrote some of the group’s biggest hits, including Light My Fire, Love Me Two Times and Love Her Madly. On the 25th anniversary of his death an estimated 15,000 fans gathered at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France, to pay their respects. The memories came flooding back! I have been to the Pere Lachaise Cemetery. It wasn’t exactly a normal visit to a final resting spot of many famous people though. It was 1990, a bloke named Warren from Auckland that I had met in a town called Inverurie in Scotland and I were on our way to the Beerfest in Munich. We had organised the trip over a beer or two one night in our local, The Banks of Ury. When I say organised, I actually mean, “Do you wanna go to the Beerfest next month?” “Yep sweet.” Needless to say we arrived in Paris at about midnight with no accommodation organised. “Let’s sleep the night with Jim Morrison,” I said to Warren. I knew he was buried somewhere in Paris and I was sure it was with several other famous people, so for some reason I thought it would be a good spot to get some kip before an early train departure to Munich the next morning. After initially confusing the hell out of a local policeman, we got some directions and walked for about 4km before we eventually found our destination. I was gutted! Before us was a fortress. Well that’s what it looked like. A huge concrete wall surrounded the cemetery, I’m guessing about five metres high. That was hardly going to stop two Kiwi lads though! We found an equipment shed of some sort built up against the wall and after hiding our packs, climbed on to the roof

of it and hoisted ourselves on top of the wall. On top were rows of 300mm-long metal spikes with razor-sharp tips, those tips were sharp enough to go through a dumb Kiwi’s hiking boots’ sole. Yes I did. Just below that was coiled barbed wire. We were getting the feeling about now that we weren’t the first to have this idea. After a short discussion about turning back, which in reality was Warren answering my question with: “Bugger that I’m jumping” as he threw himself off the wall. I joined Warren inside the cemetery, after a very ungraceful commando roll. Now what was it Mum said about if one of your mates jumped off a cliff would you?
Oh well, too late now. I think it being very dark helped my decision to leap. I can tell you they waste no electricity on lighting in that place at night. We searched for hours for Jim’s grave, using cigarette lighters to check the names. We were not alone that night! A black cat decided it should befriend us and thought it was quite a funny game to jump out at these two idiots with lighters wandering around its domain. It scared the bejeebuz out of us several times! After a couple of hours of searching we had found Oscar Wilde and Fryderyk Chopin, but no Jim Morrison. We had the Roadhouse Blues big time as we had to give up and get a

Japan the exception to declines in local currency terms
T
he second quarter of 2015 has come to an end now and over the period most global sharemarkets posted small declines in local currency terms. Japanese shares were the exception, rising 5.4 per cent, but we saw modest falls from shares in the US, UK, Europe, Australia and emerging markets. However, the NZ dollar fell sharply during the quarter as the domestic economy lost momentum, dairy prices continued to fall and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand chose to cut the Official Cash Rate (OCR). The NZX was down slightly during the quarter, with the NZX50 index falling 1.8 per cent. This was the first quarterly decline since June 2012, following eleven consecutive quarters of gains. This quarter has finished with a flurry of volatility as we continue to look to the Greek debt crisis. Just in the past week we have seen plenty of drama which has caused uncertainty for investors across the globe. Over the

weekend talks again broke down between Greece and its creditors with neither wanting to compromise on demands. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras called for a referendum, to be held Sunday, where the people of Greece will vote ‘yes’ if they agree with the conditions creditors have demanded, or ‘no’ to reject the terms. During the week there has been further attempts to reach an agreement all of which have failed to secure the much needed bailout funding. A ‘no’ vote will also likely see Greece ejected from the euro currency bloc, the implications of which are uncertain. for farmers. The price for whole milk powder, which in the last auction two weeks ago fell only slightly, dropped a massive 10.8 per cent. It is currently priced at $US2054 per tonne. The current forecast for the 2015/16 season is based on whole milk powder reaching $US3500 for the season. The New Zealand dollar fell following the result from the auction and this has further strengthened the case for the RBNZ to cut rates again at its meeting later this month. The ANZ business confidence survey fell to its lowest reading in two years, reinforcing that there has been a slowing of economic momentum in New Zealand. Business confidence in rural areas in particular fell as they begin to feel the pinch from the lower dairy payout. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the US continues to churn out positive data with consumers and businesses more optimistic on the economic outlook. This is being driven by positive jobs data and increas-
ing wages, a sign that the labour market is tightening. Factory and manufacturing data has all been positive as well, which continues to point to solid growth in the second quarter. At the moment all data is pointing to the first rate hike from the US Federal Reserve happening before the end of the year, with committee member William Dudley commenting that September is very much in play in terms of a possible start date. Next week expect markets to react to the results of the Greek referendum. Locally investors will digest the New Zealand Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion, which is likely to be negative. In Australia, the Reserve Bank is due to meet. There is unlikely to be any change to its current policy and the cash rate should remain at 2.00 per cent. Capital restrictions have been imposed on the Greek people meaning that they are limited to getting €60 a day from ATMs, although finding one that has any cash in it appears to be a more pressing problem. Banks have been ordered to close for the week and the Greek stock exchange is also closed for the week. There was a Global Dairy Auction this week which saw yet another decline in dairy prices, the ninth consecutive drop. Prices are now at a six-year low and have sparked talk of yet another drop in forecast payouts

Reserve Bank tipped to start cutting OCR BY BRIAN FALLOW Following another drop in export dairy prices overnight Wednesday ASB economists are now predicting the Reserve Bank will reverse all of last year’s increases to the official cash rate. A deteriorating outlook for the terms of trade and national income was the principal reason the central bank cited for cutting the OCR by 25 basis points to 3.25 per cent last month and foreshadowing another cut beyond that. Following weaker than expected economic growth numbers for the March quarter market economists have tended to regard another OCR cut this month as in the bag and further easing beyond that increasingly likely. ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley said yesterday he now expects the Reserve Bank to cut the OCR a further 75 basis points in the July, September and October reviews, to a low of 2.5 per cent. Tuffley cited weakening business confidence, weakening consumer confidence in dairying regions, the weak overnight dairy auction and
ASB’s expectation that recovery in dairy prices will be slower. But there were some uncertainties around when or if the last cut would be delivered, Tuffley said. “The New Zealand dollar has already fallen substantially, and will also help prop up the economy and inflation. And, low interest rates are already fuelling the housing market.” Further interest rate
cuts would further stoke the housing market and add to the Reserve Bank’s macro-prudential concerns about it, he said. Deutsche Bank chief economist Darren Gibbs said on Tuesday that over coming months the Reserve Bank was likely to conclude that it was prudent to unwind all of the monetary policy tightening undertaken in 2014, taking the OCR back to 2.5 per cent. ANZ is calling for two more OCR cuts with a risk of more, while Westpac is picking cuts in both July and September. – NZME

In brief Commingling hiatus There will be no commingling of quaddie, first4, and quinella pools in New Zealand for at least the next two months while the TAB and Tabcorp negotiate a new deal. During the hiatus, which started on Wednesday, only New Zealand money will be bet in to the pools, significantly reducing their size. The Daniel Champion and Kezia Murphy stable has six runners in today’s Ashburton gallops. Co-trainer Murphy said they were happy with all their horses heading in but backed Bobby Al to register a breakthrough win. The three-year-old bay gelding will chase this among the 10-strong fieldall looking for a maiden win in race five. “He ticks all the boxes, has drawn one and is in good form,” Murphy said. “He also has top jockey Matthew Cameron on board.” The 28-year-old Cameron is leading the jockey premiership and is “as good as you can get” looking for a maiden win - with 145 wins to his name so far this season. He won the jockeys’ premiership last year with 143 victories. The Champion-Murphy combination are hoping he can add at least another one for them. Cameron will also ride Angel Falls who Murphy hoped would bounce back after a “good excuse last start” at Riccarton. Of the other runners, Murphy said Hot Pants was “working well” but had drawn badly out wide in 15 so would require a bit of luck. Fellow local trainer Russell

Bishop’s holiday put off The Dennis brothers have a bigger picture in mind when opting for one more throw of the dice with The Bishop at Ashburton today. In past years The Bishop would be out spelling at this stage of the winter and that was again to be the case until he won the Goodeve Waimate Cup (2200m) at Oamaru early last month. “We got him home and thought about it and decided to keep him going for a few more weeks for this one,” said Tony Dennis, referring to the $25,000 Keith Wild & Dave Redmond Potato Growers Open 2100. We figured if we kept him going for an extra month we could give him three or four weeks out and still get him up for the New Zealand Cup. When they’re getting old you don’t want to leave them out long. “That’s the plan anyway and, though he’s coming up nine, he didn’t start racing until he was four. We’d like the chance to run him at two miles (3200m). “He’s typical of the Yamanin Vitals, he just keeps going and I don’t think he’d have any trouble getting the distance in the New Zealand Cup.” - Racing Desk
ASHBURTON RACING CLUB PREVIEW Some terrific fields have been carded for today’s Ashburton meeting which will start at 11.18am on a very good racing surface prepared by track manager Gary Chamberlain. There are many locals engaged and two or three wins seem likely. Entry to the meeting is free and the Davidson stand will provide shelter for those seeking a warm cosy spot. Race 1 Good quality line up to start the day and not easy to sort out. The local Kodema should be amongst them with luck in the running as it seems more settled this time in and jockey Ashley McKay is riding confidently. The two highest rated horses, Somethings Burning and Prince Ransom, are both likely to be close up and Mr Costa Cugat could be coming back to the form expected as a 3yo. Those looking to start the day with a wider fancy are advised to look at Clem, a returned Hong Kong horse with the potential to beat these. Race 2 Small field which should be
dominated by Urban, a Waikato Stud product that has been tried in Australia, Honor That, a speedy 2yo that will be difficult to contain, and San Michelle an improving mare with the draw to get the best run. Race 3 Rivertaine Coup has won over this distance against a better field at Cup time and despite the draw should be a bright chance. A Bob Short has the draw to dictate and the 3kg claim from inform Jacob Lowry will also help. Ripple looks a mare to go onto better things this campaign while Maybe Miami could continue a rich vein of form Race 4 Quite a strong R65 event and the recent drop back horse Barbery Rose looks well-placed by the Pitman barn to capitalise. Paintball has strong exposed form and will give a good sight while Soviet Song will be a better prospect with the southern debut under the belt. Do Uno Whoiam has undeniable ability and good track form to enhance its chances.

Bobby Al should be winning this for the Champion/Murphy stable and appeals as an anchor for all multibets. The most opposition should come from Juliefoundher (best quinella) and Midnight Cappa. Race 6 Fairly even race as some of the key players have wide draws. Expect Propitious to be prominent and Diamond Edge looked an improver from Riccarton. Coffee and Incontrol are also worthy of respect. Race 7 Absolute Excelencia continues to run well in all conditions and with the help of NZ’s leading jockey another big effort is expected. Keepa Tramp has a great record at Ashburton and is a serious threat. Ishimine has sound place prospects while both locals, Jack’s Run and Natkingcole have worthwhile form and are chances. Race 8 Capacity field of stayers should make for some good odds. The local mare Angel
Falls should appreciate the better track conditions on offer and seems a good each way chance. Miss Mia didn’t fire a shot on the tricky track last time but had impressed beforehand so appeals as a danger. Messines and Speedy Jax are also likely to perform well. Race 9 Not a strong field for the stake on offer and it looks likely that The Bishop, the highest rated horse here, and Lakota a hardy type in good form will dispute the finish. Sir Amron is in sound form and should run a handy race again. Race 10 The very consistent Jigger Inn looks well-placed to clear maidens in this and the draw and a 3kg claim add to the positives. Look for Mustang Sally to be close up if the track remains reasonable as luck has not been her best friend. Of the others, D’Ellis is usually close up and Location looks an improver with a significant rider change an advantage. - Greg Jones

For the second time in two weeks, Mid Canterbury Netball’s top teams couldn’t be separated. It was deadlock for premier teams Ashburton College and Methven, their nail-biting match ending in a 23-all draw. The game was the first of the third round, the two rivals having faced off three times now. The first time College came away with a win and last week’s match ended 26-all. In last night’s other games, Hampstead welcomed Rakaia to the premier competition and United drew with Celtic. In the potential premier final between Methven and College, both teams were slow to start, the first quarter ending 7-all. College weren’t their usual selves come the second quarter, losing valuable ball due to simple errors. Methven’s attacking end remained strong and the team managed to race out to a four-point lead, heading into half-time 15-11. Methven’s defence was solid
through the third quarter but College remained calm, creeping their way back up the scoreboard - the quarter ending with just two goals in it, 19-17 to Methven. It was all on in the fourth and final quarter and it looked as though Methven had a win in their grasp, sinking two goals within minutes of the whistle blowing. However College held on and the match went goal for goal, the young side sinking the last shot to draw the match 23-all. College coach Angela Mitchell said the game played was a different one than last week, and she was pleased with how her team implemented what they worked on during practice. “I think we were more considered in what we did,” Mitchell said. “We have an experienced line-up and they are able to keep calm and hold their own.” Methven coach Maree Macphail agreed the game was a different one, and said the teams were obviously of the same calibre. “They’re pretty much equal

teams, both passionate, strong and leave it all out on the court,” she said. Premier’s early match saw United and Celtic face off once again. United managed to clinch a one-point victory last week, but last night neither team could out-do the other, the match ending 24-all. Both teams missed valuable
goals during the first few minutes of the first quarter but Celtic snuck out to a one-goal lead at quarter time. By halftime it was still neck-and-neck the one point difference remaining and the score 13-12 heading into the second quarter. The third quarter saw the one-point difference in United’s favour, 19-18. The fourth quarter was neck-and-neck, Celtic ahead by one point with three seconds left on the clock but United managed to score a lastgasp goal to draw the game 24all. Rakaia played their first premier game last night since 2011 but were denied a win by a fiery Hampstead side, the final score 29-27. In senior A, newbies Allenton pulled out a win over former premier team College B 25-21 and Hampstead B edged out Celtic B 26-25. Collegiate faced off against College Y9A, but managed a convincing 4017 win. All netball will take a break over the school holidays, and resume from July 22.
The Silver Ferns’ selectors have taken a massive punt in naming uncapped shooter Malia Paseka in the World Cup team at the expense of experienced star Cathrine Latu. The axing of Latu is one of several big talking points of the 12-strong team for the Sydney tournament named yesterday, with veteran midcourters Liana Leota and Joline Henry also missing out on selection. Latu, who served a four-year standdown from international netball in order to be able to represent New Zealand at a World Cup having played for Samoa as a youngster, is consistently the most accurate shooter in the ANZ Championship, but her volume and track record against Australian defenders was a big concern for the selectors. Given the Ferns’ poor run of form against Australia over the past two years, the selectors recognised they needed to try something new, with 20-yearold Paseka offering more athleticism and versatility. Paseka was tipped as a player for the future after an eye-catching display for the NZ Under-21 side in their win over Australia in the final of the World Youth Cup in 2013. Later that year she was named as one of four training partners to accompany the Silver Ferns on their tour of England and Scotland, but she is yet to make her senior international debut. Latu will turn out for the NZA team in a number of warm-up matches against visiting international sides ahead of the World Cup and will be stand-by option should injury strike in the shooting circle before the tournament starts. In a tight race for midcourt positions, Steel midcourter Shannon Francois earned the nod ahead of Leota and Camilla Lees, while Henry misses out on the wing defence spot to Kayla Cullen. Silver Ferns coach Waimarama Taumaunu said while it was a tough call to leave some big names out of the team, the selectors needed to pick in-form players. “We’ve had some tough contesting for places over the past few days,” Taumaunu said. “It was imperative we selected on form, and it’s important to have versatile playing combinations. Savea bracketed ahead of final BY DANIEL RICHARDSON Hurricanes openside flanker Ardie Savea has been named to start in tomorrow night’s Super Rugby final against the Highlanders in Wellington but he has been bracketed alongside Manawatu’s Callum Gibbins. Savea limped from the field during the second half of the Hurricanes’ 29-9 semi-final victory over the Brumbies in the capital last weekend and was sent for scans earlier in the week to search for damage on his knee. Coach Chris Boyd must have
faith in Savea’s ability to recover in time but they have a handy insurance policy in Gibbins who has been a reliable operator when called upon this year. Right wing Cory Jane hasn’t recovered from his hamstring injury and wasn’t named in the squad but there was better news for Nehe Milner-Skudder who will wear the No 14 jersey after overcoming his own hamstring complaint. Round three of the Watters Cup rugby round robin and the stakes are already high. This year’s format has the top two teams advance to the final and all four teams are still in the frame heading into tomorrow. Southern are the only side with what could be two precious bonus points on top of the table, with Rakaia and Methven on five and Celtic, who have the bye, on four and Hampstead still in with a chance with three games to play. “The way everyone is positioned now it is knockout territory,” Southern coach Jason Rickard said. “It is do or die each week and everyone will have the same approach as everyone is still in with a chance.” For their clash with Rakaia tomorrow, Rickard said his side would be treating it as a quarter-final as they could ill-afford a loss ahead of their bye week. Not aiding Southern’s cause is a growing injury ward and a heavy contingent involved in representative rugby. Jon Dampney and Scott Vessey sat out last week – when they lost Richard Fridd early on. Things got worse mid-week as Tyler Koning, James Carr and Adaam Ross all came off injured in Mid Canterbury’s 22-20 win over Ellesmere in Leeston. “The rep game has taken its toll,” Southern coach Jason Rickard said. “Across the club we have

For the third week in a row, Ashburton play away from home, and unlike last week’s one-point win over Waimea, they face the high-flying St Andrew’s, who had a seventh straight win, beating St Bede’s 12-9. College will then get a week off over the school holidays before playing three of the final four rounds at home.
Girls hold on The Ashburton College girls’ first XV collected a win on Wednesday night to all but book their place in the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ girls’ rugby final. The defending champions held on for a 20-19 win over Craighead in Timaru. Three unconverted first half tries had the visitors ahead 15-0 at halftime. Craighead hit back with a converted try before college went in for another unconverted try. The host then came back with two more tries, the second with eight minutes to go, but college held on for the one-point win.

A late Davey Maw penalty salvaged Methven a 21-19 win over Southern to keep their season alive while Hampstead come off the bye as the only side without a win and need to end a run of 14-straight losses to Methven to get in the running. During the combined competition, Hampstead gave Methven a run for their money but went down 20-23, but their last venture to Methven was a 71-point drubbing. The blue and golds have been without a win in the Watters Cup round robin since 2009 and have not featured in the final since 2007.

valuable player creates debate among fans, pundits, coaches and even players, adding an extra layer of intrigue to every campaign. And that intrigue has been absent from Super Rugby...until now. Because in 2015, after a panel of 21 journalists, broadcasters and former players were tallied for their votes, Highlanders halfback Aaron Smith has been named the first annual Herald MVP. With every member of the 21-strong voting bloc asked to rank the regular season’s top three players in a 3-2-1 format, Smith received six first-placed votes to tally 28 points overall and take the inaugural title. The All Black finished five points ahead of an opponent and a teammate in Saturday night’s final, with Ma’a Nonu
and Waisake Naholo tallying 22 points each, a tie broken by virtue of Nonu’s five first-place votes compared to Naholo’s four. And while the veteran Nonu and the rookie Naholo were both influential in securing playoff places for their respective sides, it’s difficult to argue with Smith’s singular value. Most halfbacks are tasked with leading on the field, sparking the attack and marshalling the pack. But Smith took that leadership to another level for a team that featured a total of 85 All Blacks caps, by far the fewest of the five Kiwi sides. Under the guidance of their nuggety No9, the Highlanders topped 10 wins for the first time in franchise history and finished with their secondbest points differential. Smith
recorded a combined 13 tries and assists – third among all halfbacks – but numbers alone struggled to assess his full impact. No statistic would capture the success Smith enjoyed sniping around the edges, forcing opponents into poor options or costly errors, while no measure would judge his speed to the breakdown or the accuracy of his pass, setting up attack after electric attack. Smith, Nonu and Naholo were well clear of the chasing pack, a group of 16 that was unsurprisingly dominated by Hurricanes and Highlanders. Even with playoff performances removed from consideration, the table-toppers saw six players receive votes while the southern side earned five nominations. - NZME
New Zealand’s Black Ferns have gone 2-0 in the Canadian women’s Super Series after downing old rivals England 26-7 in a scrappy, and often testy, encounter in Red Deer. They led 16-7 at half-time but seldom got enough quick ball to feed their speedy outsides. England were vigorous in the forward exchanges, but offered little on attack and made countless errors. Fullback Selica Winiata scooted away for a fine individual try from 50m in the dying throes of a disappointingly stilted game played in superb conditions.
RWC refs announced The referees for the Rugby World Cup pool games have been announced and there will be an obvious reaction to the man in charge of the All Blacks opener. Englishman Wayne Barnes will referee the All Blacks’ first match against Argentina at Wembley. Barnes was blamed by New Zealand fans for the 2007 quarterfinal defeat to France in Cardiff after he missed a forward pass in the lead-up to a French try. Frenchmen Romain Poite and Pascal Gauzer will officiate New Zealand’s pool matches against Namibia and Georgia respectively while Englishman John Lacey will referee the final pool match against Tonga. New Zealand’s Glen Jackson will referee three pool matches including the clash between Ireland and Canada at the Millennium Stadium. Chris Pollock also will referee three games including hosts England against Uruguay at Manchester City Stadium. - NZME

Fairytale finish for Thrush? By Daniel RichaRDson Coaches don’t have a bad word to say about Jeremy Thrush. The Hurricanes lock strikes you as the type of player that coaches love to work with – he’s determined, eager to learn and is prepared to do more than what is required of him. But what his coaches also give you is a frank assessment of the 30-year-old who will play his final game for this home franchise when the Hurricanes host the Highlanders in the Super Rugby final in Wellington tomorrow. “Thrushy’s the old campaigner. He’s not the most talented individual in the world but there’s nobody who works harder or commits themselves more than Thrushy does,” Boyd said. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen had a similar thought ahead of a test match in the capital last year. “He’s a bit of a Steady Eddie old Thrushy, isn’t he?,” Hansen said last September. “And Steady Eddies either stay that way or they get comfortable in the environment they’re in and actually become better players and I think that’s what he’s done. “He’s the complete team guy ... He’s worked really, really hard on his game.” That hard work was rewarded in 2013 when Thrush finally
made his All Blacks debut. The term finally is appropriate given many had waited for him to realise his potential. He was named world under-19 player of the year in 2004 and a big future seemed to be at his feet. He made his provincial debut for Wellington in 2006 and ascended to the Hurricanes in 2008 but didn’t come on to the international radar until recently when he took his game to another level. “I changed my mindset on the way I wanted to play the game and then I also changed my mindset on the way I was going to go about it during trainings and the way I play,” he said. “I focused on a few little things with scrummaging and stuff like that and I let things snowball from there, which was a good way to go, I think.” Thrush has collected 11 caps for the All Blacks and only played on a losing side once. He doesn’t get offended by hearing his coaches liken him to an honest toiler and he’s the type of player that knows his own limits. “It’s not hard to realise that I’m not the most athletic or the fastest or the most skilful so you’ve got to find a way to make teams,” he said. “I know if I go out there and put my head down and work

hard and the boys around me trust me then I’ll hopefully get picked week in, week out.” He’s been a staple of the Hurricanes forward pack for more than half a decade and made his 100th appearance for the side
this year. Thrush will join English club Gloucester after this year’s World Cup. He will leave the Hurricanes in a good place and potentially as a Super Rugby champion. “There’s been a lot of hard
work, a lot of frustration and disappointment to get to this stage,” he said. “It’s a great way to go, a great way to finish this season and I guess it’s a little bit of a dream come true.” - NZME

This weekend will be his last in the capital before he takes up a new position as the senior operations manager for Recreational Services, who take care of more than 400 parks for the Christchurch City Council. Daniel Richardson caught up with him before he heads south. Q. What’s this year been like with so much sport on in Wellington? You’ve had the Cricket World Cup, Super Rugby and the Fifa Under-20 World Cup. A. It’s been a hell of a challenge trying to keep a grass cover on a field that’s just getting hammered. We’ve done what we’d normally do in an entire year by the end of this weekend and there are still six months to go. There are concerts. There’s a hell of a lot on the boys’ plate after I go.” Q. Do you cut certain patterns in to the grass? A. “Rugby have a pattern they
prefer so we generally stick to that. The A-League have got their 5m pattern that we have to adhere to and then we’ve got cricket where we’ve pretty much had an open slather. We can do whatever we want with cricket so that’s normally where we can get creative. At the Cricket World Cup they had a stipulated 10m pattern so we all had to abide by that.” Q. Do you keep your own lawn in good condition at home? A. I have the worst lawn in the street. It is all weeds. It gets cut with a dodgy rotary and it looks awful.” Q. How did you get in to this line of work? A. “I went straight from school [in Melbourne]. My uncle was in the trade and I used to help him out during the school holidays and it was something I really wanted to do ... It was just something I had a passion for.” Q. Do you talk to the grass? A. “No. You do get to know it pretty well. You know every blade on your field and I spend

a lot of time walking over it but there’s a guy down in Nelson that we call ‘The Grass Whisperer’. He gets really up close and personal with it.” Q. What’s the strangest thing you’ve encountered in your time in the job? A. “Weirdos coming through the Basin [Reserve]. We’ve had some pretty interesting ones
with the sevens where we’ve had people running across the field naked on their way to the sevens.” Q. Do you get offended when people complain about your turf or pitches? A. “You’ve got to take a hit from time to time. You know yourself when it’s not right. Cricket’s normally the one if
you’re going to get any issues ... We’ve had the odd one with other sports, which are annoying because you know it’s the coach trying to deflect attention. Cricket’s probably the main one. There’s a five-day test match and, if you don’t get it right, it’s five days for everyone to comment on it. But all told, we haven’t had too many of those.”

But I’d like to believe I have a lot of room to improve.” Williams has swept to Australian and French Open triumphs over the last six months, taking her within two major titles of becoming the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1988 to claim the four top titles in one year. The American great also won the US Open to end 2014 on a high and is heavy favourite to continue that dominant run by taking the Wimbledon title for the sixth time in her illustrious career. With 20 Grand Slam titles to her name, Williams has another notable milestone in her sights as she sits third on the alltime list and is closing fast on Margaret

A visit to Samoa for his sister’s wedding has earned Toulouse prop Census Johnston a callup to the squad to play the All Blacks next week. The 34-year-old, who tips the scales at about 135kg, had retired from international rugby earlier this year, but has answered an SOS from Manu Samoa coach Stephen Betham. “He arrived last week - he came for his sister’s wedding,” Betham said. “Unfortunately for us we’ve had a lot of props injured. Fortunately for us he was on the island so we had a discussion and
he said ‘okay’. “He wanted to come out and help - especially with us being short on props. He said he still thinks he’s got a bit left and he wants to help the country whenever and however he can.” Meanwhile, like some show of communist military strength, the All Blacks were able to parade another three new arrivals and still appear to be a long way from scraping the barrel. The arrival of Tom Taylor, Charlie Ngatai and Seta Tamanivala, who join other new recruits Ofa Tu’ungafasi, Nepo Laulala, Andy Ellis, George Moala and Brad Weber in what is now technically a 49-man squad,
has increased the likelihood of a handful of new caps being blooded in Apia. The All Blacks are planning to take 29 players to Samoa and it is probable that only one player currently training in Auckland with the squad will be left behind.
