Good start to 2019 on roads BY JAIME PITT-MACKAY JAIME.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Emergency services have welcomed in the New Year with only a few minor callouts, but are still calling for the public to remain safe on the district’s roads this summer. Ashburton fire chief Alan Burgess said things have been reasonably quiet, but drivers still need to be careful with a large number of people travelling through the district. “The past two years hasn’t been too bad, there has been the odd one or two things, but we will just see how things go with a lot more people travelling through

this week.” From a fire perspective, Burgess is also warning people to be wary with fires over the next few months. “We have been quite lucky this past month with the wet weather keeping things damp,” he said. “Over the next month we will have to keep an eye out as everything that has grown may dry out and cause quite a risk.” The Ashburton and Hinds fire units responded to a single car accident on the Rangitata highway in the early hours of the New Year, assisting one person out of a car before the person was transferred

to hospital by ambulance. Yesterday morning units from Ashburton and Willowby also responded to reports of a power transformer smoking on State Highway 1. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said it was smouldering and after power authorities had arrived and cut off the power, it was extinguished. Emergency services also responded to a crash at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 79 yesterday. Two cars containing six people were involved in the crash, causing a stop-go to be in place for several hours as the road was cleared.
