Great white sightings Following the sighting of a great white shark in Auckland this week, another family have reported seeing a great white “the size of a tractor” leaping from the water further up the coast. A week before Christmas, the Munro family were setting up camp on their farm at Okakari Pt near Leigh when they glimpsed what they believe was a great white. Martin Munro’s 12-year-old son Nehemiah and 11-year-old nephew Lachlan Matheson spotted the shark breaching the water. The boys said the animal breached the surface twice, and estimated it was 5m to 6m in length. “Nehemiah said it was the size of our tractor and it came out of the water and rolled over as it went,” Mr Munro said.

Fifty-one years ago, Arthur Lampitt of Granite City, Illinois, smashed his 1963 Thunderbird into a truck. This week during surgery in suburban St Louis, a 7-inch turn signal lever from that T-Bird was removed from his left arm. Dr Timothy Lang removed the lever during a 45-minute operation. Lampitt, now 75, is recovering at home. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the accident broke Lampitt’s hip, drawing attention away from the arm, which healed. A decade or so ago, his arm set off a metal detector at a courthouse. An X-ray showed a slender object the length of a pencil, but since it caused no pain or hardship, Lampitt was told to let it be.

Musical powerhouses Kanye West and Paul McCartney have teamed up in a surprise collaboration to produce a new single called Only One. The soft ballad, which West said was inspired by his daughter, features the vocals of the worldfamous rapper, and former Beatle McCartney on the organ. It was released yesterday. The lullaby-like collaboration has been in the works since early 2014, when the two met in a bungalow in Los Angeles, according to a statement from West’s label Def Jam recordings. “The process that would result in Only One began with a simple brainstorming session between the two, with McCartney improvising on the keyboards and Kanye vocally sketching and shaping ideas in a stream-of-consciousness riff,” it said. The song was inspired by West’s daughter North, who was sitting in his lap when he sang to her Hello My Only One. West said his own mother used to sing those words to him as a child. West’s first name also means “only one”.

Hasbro to replace toy

It was an embarrassing Christmas for Nivea Cabrera after she was accused by her fiance’s mother of letting her five-year-old granddaughter play with a sex toy. A mortified Carbrera asked the child where she got the penisshaped plastic cylinder. “It’s from my Play-Doh,” the girl replied. Hasbro, the Pawtucket-based toy company, is now doing damage control over the extruder tool in its Play-Doh Cake Mountain toy. The two-piece syringe-like tool, which includes a tube with corkscrew-type ridges around the outside and a dome-shaped top with a hole at the tip, can be used to squeeze PlayDoh to look like decorative cake frosting. Complaints have been surfacing since at least November, when Tulsa, Oklahoma, TV station KTUL showed the tool to parents and asked them what they thought. The station blurred the image of the tool during the piece, saying it was due to parents’ reactions.

The holiday road toll has climbed to 13 after three more fatal accidents in the New Year – and drivers returning home this weekend are being urged to take extra care. As the holiday season draws to a close, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has advised motorists to plan ahead to avoid delays at the country’s congestion chokepoints. Diversions were in place in Hamilton yesterday after a male passenger died and four

people were injured, two critically, in a three-car crash. The crash happened at the Dinsdale roundabout shortly after 2pm. It was the third road death this year after two fatal crashes on New Year’s Day. Lovey Taimana, 22, died after the car she was a passenger in crashed into a power pole on the southern motorway in Auckland at 6.15am yesterday. She died at the scene and several other people in the car were taken to Middlemore Hospital with minor injuries. Later that day, a 24-year-old

Kerikeri man died after the vehicle he was driving rolled on Papamoa Beach in the Bay of Plenty. Four others were unhurt. The Ministry of Transport yesterday confirmed the official holiday road toll included the beach fatality. Assistant commissioner of road policing Dave Cliff said: “This is not the start to the year anyone wanted.” The official holiday road period started at 4pm on Christmas Eve and runs until 6am on Monday, January 5. Over the previous Christ-

mas-New Year period, which was three days shorter than this year, there were seven deaths. The number of people who died on New Zealand roads rose sharply last year to 297 – up 43 on the year before. Responding to the increased fatalities, police said: “Longterm road toll trends are positive and the number of deaths has been reducing over time, however international comparisons show that there is still room to substantially reduce road deaths even further.” – NZME

The world of education has seen a vast amount of change over the past 50 years and Kate Syme has had a front row seat to it all. The long-serving teacher wrapped up 50 years of work in education when she retired from Ashburton College at the end of 2014. From working with blackboards and chalk to using tablets and smartphones, Mrs Syme has seen firsthand how education has changed. Mrs Syme first entered the education sector in 1964, when she took up a position at Harewood School. Over the next five decades, she taught at several Mid Canterbury schools, including Tinwald and Hinds, as well as the college. Mrs Syme spent six years at the college, where she worked in the special education unit. “I’ve loved the opportunity to work with students with very clear individual needs,” she said. “I’m particularly interested in those children on the autism spectrum.” For Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan, Mrs Syme had proved to be an invaluable member of the school’s special education unit. “For someone to dedicate 50 years to her selected career choice, that’s pretty impressive,” he said. Mr McMillan said Mrs Syme would have seen a large amount of change in education, family life and society during her impressive career. She would have helped hundreds of students during her time at the college, he said. While Mrs Syme was looking forward to retirement, there were a few aspects of college life she would miss. “I will miss my college, I made some really good friends,” she said. “I’m also going to miss the stimulus that students give.”

Boaties and jetskiers have been given a pat on the back by Lake Hood patrollers for their good on-water behaviour. Last year a boat registration scheme was introduced for lake users, with more than 980 vessels signed up. And that high registration rate has had a lot to do with improving on-water behaviour, says Lake Hood Park manager Gilbert Murdoch. “Behaviour has improved and at this point we haven’t had any complaints. It was pretty busy here on Boxing Day with people spread around the lake and if the weather is good over new year it will be huge.” A user guide to Lake Hood is provided to people when they register their boat and this spells the rules out very clearly. Life jackets are mandatory but occasionally water patrollers spot people flouting this rule and they’re reminded of their obligations, he said. In terms of boat registration, patrollers would approach people with unregistered boats and while they wouldn’t be put off the water, they would be reminded that registration was required and that stickers should be displayed on both sides of their boat. Patrollers would deal with minor issues such as failure to wear a life jacket, or boaties travelling in the wrong direction, bigger issues around behaviour on the water were referred to Environment Canterbury (ECan), Mr Murdoch said. This summer ECan recreational boating safety teams will be keeping an eye on jetskiers flouting bylaws and causing problems on Canterbury lakes. Complaints have been logged from Lakes Ruataniwha and Benmore over speed, travelling too close to other boats and failure to keep an eye on other vessels on the water. Serious breaches of water safety can be reported by phoning an ECan safety officer on 027 436-0134.

Crash victims named Police have named the two people who died after their car crashed off a single-lane bridge in Westland on Tuesday. They were Chilyoung Kim and Young-Mo Sang, both aged 59, from Seoul, South Korea. The couple had only been in New Zealand for two days before the crash. Police said family members arrived in New Zealand yesterday and had formally identified the couple. Homebrewed beer was once the stuff of nightmares, a fast track to a bad belly and a headache. It lurked in cobweb encrusted bottles in the back of dad’s garage. When opened it often gave off a foul odour and when the muddy, brown liquid was poured into a glass it looked bad and tasted worse. Today, however, homebrewed beer has come of age. It’s high-tech, high-octane and as pure as the product from the hop could hope to be. Its fans say it’s preferable to the commercial product and if sales of homebrew kits are any indication, those fans are rapidly growing in numbers. One of those is Jeff Crossen. He’s been a home-brewer for around six years and can be counted on to have about 300

bottles of his finest stored in his garage. Jeff ’s a purist. He likes his beer to sit and mature before he knocks off the cap. Four or five months in a dark, cool place does the job. He was inspired to start brewing by a mate and his dad who had perfected the job over 25 years. Their supplies ran to around 600 bottles at any one time. When it comes to homebrew versus commercial brew, there’s no argument over the best product, Jeff says. “You can really tell the difference. I’d far rather drink homebrew. A while ago I had three or four jugs at the pub and I was crook as a dog. You don’t get crook with homebrew, it’s pure.” And he knows what he’s talking about, with his brewing skills given the nod of approval by the experts.

“I’ve been in the Mayfield show two years in a row and got a first and a second and last year in the Ashburton show I was first and got a cup.” Apart from the purity of homebrew, Jeff says cost is a big factor for many brewers. “It cost about $1.25 to make a 750ml bottle and I probably have one or two of those every night.” He’s a lager man but brews wheat beer for his wife. His mates are pretty quick to take up an invite to call round for a beer, he said. It costs a bit to set up, but once that’s done it’s a pretty cheap way of keeping the beer fridge stocked, Mr Crossen said. Retailer Mike O’Hare from Simplifoods said he had watched the sales of beer kits steadily climb over the past 18 months. He’s putting the increase in sales down to a

mixture of cost conscious beer consumers and lower drinkdrive alcohol limits. “We get a lot of rural people, particularly dairy farmers who might live 20 or 30 minutes from the pub, it’s easier for them to brew and drink at home,” he said. As sales have increased so has demand for a wider range of beers. While draught beer remains number one, many home-brewers were now keen to try boutique beers, Mr O’Hare said. “The beer brewers seem to be getting a lot more adventurous now.” The enthusiasm for homebrewed beer is not just limited to the Ashburton District, with the organiser of this year’s National Homebrew Competition, Greig McGill saying there had been a big increase in sales of kits nationally over the past year.

Two teens remanded on murder charges Two teenagers charged with the motel murder of an Auckland man will apply for bail next week. Leonard Nattrass-Berquist and Beauen Wallace-Loretz, both 17, appeared in Auckland District Court yesterday after being arrested on Wednesday over the death of 54-year-old Ihaia Gillman-Harris.

The pair appeared before a Justice of the Peace who only had the jurisdiction to remand them in custody until Monday, when the matter will go before a judge. Applications to photograph the accused were declined after defence lawyer Murray Gibson said their pictures were already in the media and there was “not

much to be gained” from new images. The court heard at least one of the teens would make an application for bail at the next appearance. It is alleged the pair were with Mr Gillman-Harris when he checked into an Epsom motel on Saturday. Shortly after check-in, two young men left

in Mr Gillman-Harris’ vehicle. An hour later he went to reception with a serious head injury and asked for help. He died in hospital soon after. Detective Inspector Scott Beard would not comment further on the specifics of the investigation but said the victim’s family were relieved arrests had been made. - NZME

Attack arrest A 27-year-old man was arrested in the Hutt Valley yesterday afternoon in relation to the brutal bashing of Mauriceville man Benjamin Birch on Wednesday night in Lansdowne. He was held in police custody until his court appearance in Lower Hutt District Court. His case will likely be transferred to Masterton District Court this month. Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Miller said police believed associates of the man helped him in eluding police inquiries and they will be spoken to. The victim was doing well after surgery and remembered being attacked. - NZME

Deadly crash Police are still piecing together the cause of a three-car crash which killed a male passenger and injured four others at a Hamilton roundabout yesterday. Police said the crash happened at the Dinsdale roundabout in Hamilton shortly after 2pm. Two people, including a female driver, were critically injured and taken to Waikato Hospital. Two others were also taken to hospital. Senior Sergeant Kevin Anderson, of the Waikato road policing group, said the accident was a “tragedy” and it was not yet clear how it occurred. - NZME

Supermarket veteran At 70 years old, Graeme Gower sees no reason to retire. He’s been working for Progressive Enterprises for 55 years and still wakes up in the morning looking forward to work. A community divided in 2014 By Sue NewmaN

The year 2014 will go down in the Ashburton District’s history as a year that was marked by civic unrest and issues that divided not only a community but also its council. In many ways it was a re-run of 2013 – same issues, same arguments but this time round, we have some results. The big three - the art gallery and heritage centre, the EA Networks Centre and the second bridge – will move out of the public arena early next year. After several years of the community and council battling one another, the route for a second bridge across the Ashburton River was decided and set in concrete. When hearings on land designation for that bridge wrapped up earlier in the year both the submitters and the Ashburton District Council could be forgiven for thinking they had run a marathon. It was a hearing like no other in terms of both numbers and passions. Feelings had run high for many over the bridge and the route it would take. Like the river it was planned to span, it divided the community – the council on one bank and the community on the other. It became a done deal in May after a marathon hearing that ran for most of a week. The issue attracted 336 submitters, 319 of whom said NO to the route down Chalmers Avenue and along a new road in Tinwald’s east. That decision carved thousands of dollars off the values of Chalmers Avenue homes and meant around six lifestyle block owners in east Tinwald found their properties on the council’s shopping list. For those most affected, while the outcome was not what they wanted, there is now some certainty in their lives – assuming the bridge is built within 15

years. If not, the council will be in the real estate business as it sells up land it has acquired but no longer needs. Jump ahead in time and today’s route for a new bridge may not be relevant in the future. By the time it is built the New Zealand Transport Agency may have changed its mind about making the current bridge four lanes or a bypass may be the most sensible option for heavy vehicles. Nothing is more certain than traffic volumes will continue to increase and that today’s solutions may not meet tomorrow’s problems. As it had for more than 15 years, the district’s new art gallery and heritage centre continued to divide the community. Yes the project was committed and work had begun on construction, but the divisions continued. In one corner were a group of residents who believed the council had not honoured agreements they had forged with councillors and staff. Those agreements

were key in allowing the project to proceed, they said. The building might be working towards completion but the neighbours were not giving up their fight to have what they saw as their rights upheld. In another corner there were thousands of ratepayers who believed the project was fatally flawed. They had lost their fight to halt it through a public rally and petition, but they hadn’t given up voicing their dissent. In the third corner stood the council and even it was divided. While there were the stalwarts who were convinced the project was right, there were others who had maintained for its duration that it was wrong. And finally there was the Morrison Low report in a corner of its own. This had been commissioned by chief executive Andrew Dalziel who, when he saw the $4 million-plus blow-out,, wanted some answers. They came and they were damning.

The project’s knockers said their fears had been vindicated. The report gave most of the project a string of black marks, from the initial failure to commission a feasibility study through the failure to appoint a dedicated project manager through to a lack of communication and understanding of the project itself. Lessons have clearly been learned by the failure of this project to engage the hearts and minds of the community. If it had been planned differently and consulted on differently and if the public’s concerns had been listened to, then it may have been viewed as the wonderful community asset it will become rather than a project on which little but criticism has been heaped. The time has come, however, to move on, to put the acrimony of the past behind us and to enjoy and celebrate this new and outstanding community facility. And then there was the good

news, the project with the feelgood factor, the EA Networks Centre. Work on the riverside complex was watched with enthusiasm by the community. The viewing spot on the roadside on River Terrace was a popular stopping place and from the outset the community had a good handle on the project, its costs and its progress. This was in sharp contrast to the art gallery and heritage centre. Yes, the sports complex will clearly have a much wider user base, but that alone doesn’t account for the difference in public attitude between it and the art gallery and heritage centre. What does, however, is the way in which the community was involved from the outset. It was a no secrets project that had seen huge community involvement from day one. It even had an element of community fundraising and together that ensured huge public buy-in. The price tag is millions over the art gallery and heritage centre, but it seems in the public’s mind that this is an investment that’s more than worthwhile. Yes, we’ll all be paying for it on our rates for years, but no one seems to be complaining. For this project, due to open by May next year, the next challenge will be the big ticket piece of recreation - a hydroslide or hydroslides. And again the community has taken ownership of this one. We’ve been surveyed and consulted and there are plenty of people listening. Just how much they listen will become apparent in the new year when the results of the latest community survey are known. Yes, around 75 per cent of us said we want a hydroslide, but the devil on this one will be in the detail. If most people opt for the most expensive option (around $2 million) and they want it now, how will the council react?

Kiwi killed in California hailed a hero By John Weekes The family of a New Zealander who died heroically protecting others from a violent storm is travelling to the California island he called home. The death of diver Tim Mitchell, 39, has shattered the island of Santa Catalina, where the New Plymouth native also served his community as a firefighter and harbour patrol assistant. Mr Mitchell’s relatives were yesterday flying to California from their homes in New Zealand and Europe to arrange a fitting send-off for a man who paid the “ultimate sacrifice” this week. Mr Mitchell was trying to save a boat that broke free from its moorings in a storm on Wednesday, New Zealand time. He became stuck between the boat and rocks. An eyewitness said a crowd of people frantically tried to save Mr Mitchell but could not. Mr Mitchell had worked as a dive instructor on the island known as Catalina for about 10 years. He was a recently naturalised US citizen, held joint degrees in religious studies and sociology, and was even an accomplished musician, playing multiple instruments. The 20m boat Mr Mitchell was on, a scuba diving tour boat called King Neptune, was destroyed in the storm. The local City of Avalon council said Mr Mitchell was “a hero and beloved member of the city family, who gave the ultimate sacrifice as he valiantly served the community defending life and property”. “Tim was on duty as a harbour patrol assistant, working from a patrol boat, trying to protect residents, visitors and boats that were being battered by the fierce winds and waves that quickly and mercilessly descended upon Avalon last night.”

The council said Mr Mitchell joined the local harbour authority in May last year, after moving to the USA in 2000. A local boat owner saw Mr Mitchell in the cockpit being “buffeted around” just before tragedy struck. Several boats in the area broke free from their moorings about 10.55pm local time. “I did see him fall off the boat. And at that point he was pinned between the rocks and the boat,” Edward Ureno told NBC News. Witness John Etheridge told ABC7 the boat hit the beach with “a great deal of force” a couple of times and “he was just thrown overboard”. Mr Mitchell’s former colleagues in the local dive industry labelled him a hero. “...Tim courageously attempted to save the King Neptune as she parted four mooring lines and was swept to Step Beach,” the Catalina Scuba Luv company wrote in a tribute on Facebook. “One of the Harbor Department’s boats came perilously close to hitting rocks, so one of the patrolmen jumped from the vessel to get to safety,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department said. “Two deputies attempted to rescue him from the water but were unsuccessful. The patrolman became lodged between the vessel and the rocks under the turbulent waves and could not be reached.” Mr Mitchell’s body was recovered the next morning. He is survived by his parents, by two brothers and Michelle Rodriguez, his girlfriend. Another man, 53-year-old Bruce Ryder, also died as a result of the storm. Mr Ryder was a former King Neptune captain and dive master, according to Scuba Luv. - NZME

The run left the car club’s Maronan Road grounds at 1.30pm, stopped in at the Rakaia Domain for afternoon tea before finishing up at the Ashburton Domain for a barbecue. Police call for footage of mayhem at BW Festival Police have called for video footage of the mayhem at Gisborne’s BW Festival, as investigators consider laying more serious charges against the ringleaders of the New Year’s Eve riot. Gisborne police yesterday said investigations were continuing into the riot, which saw 63 people arrested and dozens of people injured. The large-scale disorder, sparked by a small group of

males torching tents, soon attracted a “mob mentality” and spread across two BW Summer Festival camp grounds. Police, who believe it was premeditated trouble planned by a core group, battled with the drunken mobs for three hours. The trouble started at about 5.30pm when groups of festival goers in the BW camp ground in Watson Park on the city beach front confronted each other across the fence that di-

vided their two zones. In the end, 83 people were injured, including seven who needed hospital treatment. Those arrested were facing a variety of charges including disorderly behaviour, assault and assault with a weapon, and most have been summonsed to appear in the Gisborne District Court later this month. Senior Sergeant Steve Sutherland said police were keen to view any video footage of the

riot taken by people who were in the area at the time. “Our investigations into the incident are continuing and it doesn’t stop when people have been arrested,” he said. “We want to see as much footage as possible so we can identify those who took an active part in the riot.” Police have also been viewing numerous videos posted on media and social media sites. It was likely many more peo-

ple had recorded parts of the riot on their cellphones. “It would be very helpful for our investigation to gather as much information as we can and we hope those who hold that information will be able to assist us.” Police had found evidence that suggested the violence had been planned in advance on social media and they were considering charging some those arrested with inciting a riot.” -NZME

Hazel Glasson is a fourth generation Mt Somers resident and proud of it. In the days when the quiet village was a thriving and growing community, her family, the Gifkins, owned the local woolscour. Like many things in Mt Somers that’s long gone, but while the village may have changed its face, it hasn’t changed its heart, Hazel said. Yes, it’s quieter today, sometimes too quiet, even for a 79-year-old, but if you put your mind to it, you’ll still find plenty of groups and organisations to be involved in, she said. And it’s that community involvement that earned Hazel one of this year’s Ashburton District Council community honours. Her community has been her life. “Over the years there have been 22 or 23 organisations in Mt Somers. I’ve been on all of them. They were all things I was interested in and when you have children, you get involved and go to all the things they’re doing,” she said. For Hazel, however, just attending events was never going to be enough. Over the years she’s been president of most organisations, raised four children and has become the unofficial expert on all things Mt Somers. As a child, Mt Somers was a wonderful playground, she said. “The woolscour was on the

bank of the river and it was our playground when we were kids. We lived down there; as soon as we came home from school, that’s where we went. The scour was there for around 50 years, but after the river flooded in 1955 it was never rebuilt.” There were four Gifkins children. They all went to Mt Somers School and then travelled into Ashburton Technical College by bus each day – a long trip on shingle roads. When she completed her education, Hazel worked in what is now the Mt Somers Tavern. Hers was a musical family with its own concert party and it was that party that brought her and husband-to-be Ian Glasson together. She played the piano, he played the mouth organ. “We were asked to go up to Mesopotamia to play in a fundraising concert and Ian was there – he never really went home.” He was a builder with Bradfords, but when they married Ian moved inland and took up a job driving with Webb’s Transport. Today, they are one year short of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Among Hazel’s long list of community involvement has been the swimming club of which she is now patroness, the museum committee, the communtiy library, CWI, the Association of Presbyterian Women, Mt Somers Red Cross, the Friendship Club and that’s just for starters.

The community pool has absorbed many hours of her time from her early years. “I’ve done a lot of work in that pool. My dad was the president when I was growing up and we had to scrub it out when it was emptied and that was pretty regularly because it was filled from the creek and used to get pretty muddy,” she said. For 30 years she looked after the Mt Somers Library when it was based in the hall and then the scout den. Time caught up with that library, however and it closed, with around 5000 books put into storage. When the new library opened some found a new home. “They took what they wanted and I brought the rest home. I’ve always been a keen reader,” Hazel said. As well as being number one community volunteer, Hazel and husband Ian started the village’s first fish and chip shop. “People staying at the camping ground kept saying they wished there was a fish and chip shop and we decided, why not start one, so we built the shop and ran it for four years. I really enjoyed that,” she said. Today Hazel is still involved with the village’s museum and chances are when it’s open hers will be the face behind the front desk. “I guess I’m just about always there and my son calls me a museum piece. Sometimes I’ll just go down and open up and people always come,” she said. Mt Somers is a lot smaller

with fewer social opportunities. The 22 community organisations have dwindled to around five, Hazel said, and the population is more transient. There are less than a handful of the family names still linked to the village. But it’s still the place she happily calls home. “I have to say I’ve never resented living here. I used to know everyone. I find it very quiet here now but small towns are great, you have an opportunity to be involved in everything.” Mt Somers might have been her home for life, but Hazel is planning to leave - when Ian stops working. He’s 80 in April and she reckons he’s done his bit. When he finally retires they will head to Ashburton. And while that will mean leaving the house they built decades ago it won’t mean leaving their big bus behind. They often pack up and go on tour and Hazel hopes they will be doing more of that when Ian signs off from work. Moving is still in the future and now Hazel is still feeling a bit overwhelmed by her community award. It came out of the blue. “I was having breakfast and the phone went and I was asked if I’d accept it – I said I’d love to; but this is something I never went looking for, I didn’t even know they had these awards,” she said. “I’ve really just done all of those things because I enjoyed it.”

They died together and now two men caught up in a tragic boating accident in the Manukau Harbour this week will be farewelled together. Terangi “Toots” Woonton, 59, and Kairangi Samuela, 53, lost their lives when the boat they were in was swamped while crossing the Manukau Bar on Monday afternoon. The two victims and three other men – all related – had earlier spent a day out fishing and were tipped into the treacherous sea at about 2pm. The survivors endured choppy conditions for almost two hours before a family out sightseeing on their boat spotted one of the men and went to their aid. On Thursday, Mr Woonton’s son, Jason Woonton, said they were planning a special family service for the two men last night at a church in Mangere. The cousins will then be farewelled at a joint funeral this morning. Jason Woonton has contacted the family who made a heroic effort to rescue the survivors and recover the bodies of the two men. Louise Pieters, one of five people on the boat that located the fishermen, said she spoke with Jason Woonton and his mother on the phone. “He just wanted to pass on his thanks to everyone involved on behalf of the family,” she said. “He was really thankful and relieved that they were able to get his father back.” It meant a lot for the family to have both the survivors and the bodies of Mr Woonton and Mr Samuela back, Ms Pieters said. “He also passed the phone to his mum ... and she just said a big thank-you and that she felt for us as well given that we were obviously out on a family outing and we went through that as well.” Mr Woonton said the family were rallying behind his mother and Mr Samuela’s partner as both were finding the situation particularly difficult. He said their family had received a great deal of love and support from all branches of the community and expressed their thanks. Tributes to the fallen men have continued, with many of their whanau and friends posting on social media sites about their shock at the loss and tragedy. – NZME

nyone who attended Ashburton College in the past four decades will remember Greg Jones. A familiar face around the college since 1976, Mr Jones leaves after a staggering 39 years of service. He began his time at the school as an assistant teacher of science and in the decades since he has held numerous roles, including head of the chemistry department, Year 12 and 13 tutor and head of the senior school. Many former students also have Mr Jones to thank for written references for job and tertiary study applications. Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said Mr Jones was a highly regarded and skilled teacher, who was well respected by his students and colleagues. “His quick mind and unflappable ap-

Joanne Aberhart proach have been the hallmark of all of his work within the college,” he said. A keen sportsman, Mr Jones was heavily involved with college sports teams during his time at the school, where he coached and selected teams for cricket, rugby and squash. He was also a familiar face at college prizegivings, which he co-ordinated for more than 14 years. For the man himself, leaving his students was bittersweet. “I’ll miss the contact with the students, and teaching chemistry, which I love,” Mr Jones said. “I’ll miss just seeing how they respond to learning in the classroom.” Mr Jones leaves the college to take up a position as Dean of College House in Christchurch in May.

oanne Aberhart’s association with Ashburton College began 33 years ago, when she was appointed as an assistant teacher of accounting, economics and maths in 1982. She resigned for a period of time in 1993, only to return in a relief capacity before resuming work at the college in a permanent position. Known amongst staff as a positive, friendly and conscientious teacher who supported her colleagues, Mrs Aberhart was also known for supporting her students through study nights and maths help. She was also involved in extra-curricular activities, the school’s curricu-

lum development group and coached netball. Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan praised Mrs Aberhart as a “skilled and knowledgeable practitioner” who was dedicated to her students and chosen profession. “Jo has contributed across all aspects of the college – academic, sporting, pastoral and professionally, for almost 35 years,” he said. “She is highly regarded and respected by her colleagues, and we all wish her the very best in her new role.” Mrs Aberhart will take up a new position at Motueka High School at the beginning of the new school year.

er early morning starts at college were legendary, but Christine McIndoe will be able to have a well-deserved sleep in after retiring from Ashburton College. Ms McIndoe leaves the school after 27 years, having started in 1988 as an English teacher. Appointed as head of the English faculty in 2003, she was regarded by colleagues as an excellent classroom practitioner, with a real focus on student-centred engagement and knowing her students as individuals. During her time at the college, Ms McIndoe co-ordinated the school’s Gifted and Talented Student programmes and initiated the Reading Mentor Scheme.

In 2008, she was awarded a prestigious Woolfe Fisher scholarship, which she used for professional development through an international study in Australia. For Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan, Ms McIndoe’s career was epitomised by her commitment and professionalism. “Christine has always maintained a focus on teaching and learning, and brought to this both her exceptional organisational skills and a genuine care and concern for her students and colleagues,” he said. “Perhaps the one area where others were not so keen to keep up with her was her legendary early-morning start time at college.”

s a long-serving computer studies teacher, David Benseman has seen plenty of change in his 17 years at Ashburton College. He took up the position of teacher in charge of computer studies in 1998, and has also taught maths during his tenure at the college. As well as teaching the ever-changing subject to hundreds of students over the years, Mr Benseman was also responsible for staff training and managing access to computing across the school. Mr Benseman was something of an innovator at the college, being the first to type school reports rather than writing them by hand. “When I arrived we did reporting by hand, if you made a mistake you screwed

it up and started again,” he said. “I was the first to computerise report writing.” After his success with reports, he was asked to set up the reporting system for the whole school. According to Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan, Mr Benseman was the “go to” person on staff for IT questions. “Dave has taught in one of the most changeable and fast-moving areas of education, where he has contributed at a number of levels, including within the college and nationally,” he said. Mr Benseman will move to Wellington in 2015 to be closer to family and will take up a teaching position at Wellington College.

Meth, chews you up and spits you out I t makes you feel on top of the world, 10 feet tall, bulletproof and ready to tackle anything. That is how Ross Bell, clinical director of the New Zealand Drug Foundation, describes methamphetamine. “It’s a real 21st century drug – it sits with our lifestyles where everything is speedy and has to be done quick. It (methamphetamine) helps you think faster and stay awake longer.” But when meth use turns nasty, it really chews you up and spits you out, he said. “The chaos that would happen a lot more slowly with alcohol addiction is really accelerated with meth.” He said that the downward spiral associated with addiction quickly turns users to crime. “You might binge-smoke the stuff for three days then suddenly you crash, and that’s the kind of thing that messes you up. Your sleep is disrupted, you lose your job, get kicked out of home, and suddenly you need to steal to keep up (with meth use).” Police have recently made a series of raids and arrests, revealing the underbelly of the methamphetamine trade, gang activity and crime. The South Island has been highlighted as a hot-spot for drug trafficking, with high prices encouraging organised Asian crime rings, gang-related meth manufacturing and trafficking as well as individuals wanting to make a quick buck. Christchurch is the gateway to the rest of the South Island and the city’s airport has been identified as a transit point for drug smugglers flying in from Auckland. Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam, in charge of Canterbury’s Organised Crime Unit, said a “point” (0.1g) of meth is worth around $100 in Christchurch, compared to $65 in Auckland. “It can be a big business.” But while Acting DSS Cottam said methamphetamine is a lucrative business, he says there has not been an upsurge in its use in Christchurch. “We are just responding (with our meth raids) as our investigation directs us.” Nigel Laughton, clinical director of Christchurch drug rehabilitation centre Odyssey House, doesn’t totally agree. “I think with the police involvement at the moment, it tells you that there is a lot of meth labs here. They’ll be bringing in the raw materials and making them.” Methamphetamine has been a problem for a long time now, he says. “The meth supply has remained reasonably constant. It may be that there is more

media coverage now but it has always been a problem.” Methamphetamine is predominantly made using ContacNT cold and flu tablets, sourced from China. Smuggling takes place at a variety of levels, from individuals recruited as naive “catchers” for mailed packages through to multimillion-dollar container shipments arranged by professional organised crime syndicates – such as the more than 600kg of drugs uncovered by Operation Ghost in Auckland last year. Police said it was enough pseudoephedrine to cook $172 million of P. Operation Ghost was an 18-month investigation which focused on a group of senior Asian organised crime figures operating in New Zealand. It led to more than 30 arrests. A glance at the figures make the attraction of the enterprise obvious. A single ContacNT capsule costs around $3 and $45 worth of the tablets will produce a gram of methamphetamine, which will fetch around $1000. Other ingredients in meth

can include battery acid, drain cleaner, lantern fuel and antifreeze. These ingredients are cooked into the drug in covert, illegal laboratories called clandestine (clan) labs. Processing includes mixing, separating and cooling a toxic cocktail of chemicals over two days until the cook is left with a mix of crystal, liquid or powder meth. The chemicals used in production are potentially explosive, and a single kilogram of meth produces 5kg of toxic waste that will poison people if they are exposed to it. The finished product is both powerful and highly addictive. It acts as a central nervous system stimulant, speeding up messages to and from the brain. The first “family recipe” for “P”, short for pure, could have been brought to New Zealand via the Hells Angels, according to a New Zealand Police Association article published in May. “Some believe that Auckland’s Hells Angels, the first chapter of the notorious United States gang, were the first to bring the old Hells Angels

November 24: Police set up an armed road block to catch a fleeing vehicle, the occupants believed to be carrying drugs, on Yaldhurst Rd. A 27-year-old female passenger in the car was charged four days later with possession of methamphetamine for supply following a detention under the Misuse of Drugs Amendment Act 1978 until the drugs were “passed”. December 9: Police search three Christchurch addresses and charge a 31-year-old man with possession of methamphetamine for supply. Police recovered methamphetamine, ingredients for its manufacture, ammunition, a pistol and two stolen vehicles from the three properties. December 12: A 26-year-old man was arrested after police set up an armed road block to stop his ute, believed to be carrying drugs, on SH1 Main North Rd Waimakariri. He was charged with drug-related charges including possession of methamphetamine for supply.

P2P “family recipe” for speed (amphetamine) to New Zealand as early as the 1970s, although the first clan lab wasn’t discovered until the 80s. Others say the gangs favoured importation until being upskilled by visiting US cooks as late as the mid90s. Either way, “by the early 90s, speed had become part of New Zealand’s outlaw bikie lifestyle,” it was written. Some of the first solid evidence of outlaw motorcycle gang involvement came from police surveillance of the Hells Angels in Auckland during Operation Shovel in 1997. Then in 1998, a large lab linked to the Highway 61 gang was uncovered by Operation Asphalt. By that year, the drug was widely available and the epidemic had begun. The Police Association began to brief MPs and senior police about the emerging threat, but the warnings were largely unheeded, with the focus at the time being on volume crime. It was not until 2003 that the then Labour-led Government established its Methamphetamine Action Plan, which reclassified meth from a Class B2 to a Class A drug – making those dealing with it liable in terms of up to life imprisonment. But according to the Police Association report, although welcome, the action was too little, too late. The problem had not diminished by 2009 and the new National-led Government es-

tablished a tougher action plan to root out meth suppliers. A drug bust recently in Northland is a good example of this. Thirty-eight Head Hunters gang members were arrested on methamphetamine charges after a major raid that stretched across the upper North Island. Police seized more than $4 million in cash, methamphetamine and precursors with an estimated street value of $4 million, and assets worth $9.1 million during the operation. National title eludes Keith Yesterday marked the first day of post-section play for pairs at the Bowls New Zealand National Open Championships in Auckland. Sandra Keith (right) and pairs partner Serena Matthews began the day successfully, making it through to round two of the women’s pairs section, beating Olivia Bloomfield and Leanne Chinery 23-7. Unfortunately that was as far as Keith and Matthews got. The pair lost to Barbara Butler and Diana Millbank 16-14, meaning they were no longer in the running for a national title. Keith currently holds five national titles, she won the na-

tional championship singles in 2012, the national club pairs and triples in 2013, the national championship pairs in 2013 and the national club fours in 2014. Today the pairs championship continues with the second day of post-section play, and the singles and pairs championships are set to take place tomorrow. Men’s and women’s singles finals begin at 10am and the men’s and women’s pair finals begin at 1.30pm. Both will be followed by presentations on the green. Keith will compete again on Monday when the fours get under way.

Regardless of the result in the final of the men’s pairs championship in the national tournament at Browns Bay tomorrow, either of two fine Auckland bowlers, Danny O’Connor or Peter Sain, will achieve a significant milestone. O’Connor and Sain with their respective skips Richard Girvan and Rob Ashton entered the final yesterday with stunning wins in the semi-finals, putting O’Connor in reach of a bar to his gold star for his 10th national title and Sain equally near his gold star for his fifth title. O’Connor and Girvan overcame a 16-9 deficit with only six ends to play to beat a Wellington combination, Scott Roddick and Bruce Miller, 23-16. And after a slow start when they were 6-0 down, Sain and Ashton powered away from Thames’ Colin Gawith and Karl Garrett 20-13 after 17 ends. Ashton was in sublime form as he and Sain continued their record of not having had one match go the full 18 ends. The women’s singles final, also tomorrow, features Elaine McClintock, from the host Browns Bay club, and an experienced Wellington bowler, Leigh Griffin. McClintock made the final with a gutsy 21-20 win over Canterbury’s Angela Boyd and Griffin was too strong for the Canterbury teenager Tayla Bruce, winning 21-12. If McClintock wins, she will become the first Browns Bay winner at national championships, apart from Paulette Mytton, who was in a winning composite four skipped by Marlene Castle in 1999. Last year, a John Walkerskipped triple also won a New Zealand title, but that was in the “pathways” category. McClintock won yesterday despite trailing 20-15, turning the game with a run shot to earn two shots. She then picked up further twos on the final two ends. A bowler for 18 years, McClintock has nine centre titles, in Bay of Plenty and North Harbour, but her only previous success at national level was in the New Zealand Open triples. - NZH

Ashburton’s Tony Brosnahan had to head to Chile recently to renew an important licence. Brosnahan spent three weeks umpiring professional tennis matches in Chile to retain his International Tennis Federation qualification. With the opportunities limited in New Zealand in recent years Brosnahan had to head further afield to ensure his renewal for his busy January on the lines. Brosnahan will be in action at the ASB Classic and the Heineken Open in Auckland in early January before he heads to Melbourne for the Australian Open qualifying, then his 10th

Australian Open tournament. His first trip to Melbourne was in 1996 and to head back 19 years later for a 1oth tournament required a Spanish sojourn. Learning to officiate in Spanish on the South American clay courts was all part of the challenge, where he had 28 matches over three ITF Men’s Futures Tournaments in three cities in southern Chile. The end result was a successful recertification for Brosnahan, who had the backing of High Performance Sport New Zealand as one of only three ITF registered umpires in the country. After the 12 hour flight from

Chile to Auckland, Tony was back on court as a chair umpire for the New Zealand Championships, where he umpired men’s quarter-final and semi-final matches. He is bound for Auckland again for the start of the women’s ASB Classic on January 5, featuring five top 30 players. Caroline Wozniacki (world ranking of 8), Sara Errani (14), and Venus Williams (18) are the favourites to reach the January 10 final. Wimbledon quarter-finalist, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova (25) and two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number two, Svetlana Kuznetsova (27), will also be

ones to watch, while New Zealand number one Marina Erakovic (77) also made the direct entry list. Loko arrested Jacob Loko’s NRL career with Canterbury is under a cloud before he has played a game for the Bulldogs, after he was arrested and charged for drink-driving. ‘Team is first’ for McCullum BY DAVID LEGGAT Flights of fancy don’t sit naturally with Brendon McCullum. So when he returned to the Basin Reserve this week for the first time since his finest individual cricket achievement on that ground, there was no wistful reflection. Over February 16, 17 and 18 last year, McCullum compiled 302 to save the second test against India, ensure the series would be won and write his name large in New Zealand cricket history. No New Zealander had reached 300 before. It was early in a fabulous year of test cricket for New Zealand and its brilliant, pugnacious captain. Yet one of McCullum’s appealing cricketing traits is his ability to veer a conversation away from self and back towards team. He may quietly find huge pleasure in personal performances, but he hides it pretty well. The result is that, for all his 1000-plus test runs in 2014 - another New Zealand record, including four big centuries - you have to dig about to find him talking about personal goals. He admitted to a couple of brief flashbacks when he went into the Basin dressing room, but he talks far more freely about what his team achieved in that test, in the year, than whatever he may have done to contribute towards it. “That doesn’t really float my boat,” he said yesterday when asked about whether he had his eye on records, such as Martin Crowe’s 17 test hundreds, six ahead of McCullum. “It’s nice to tick off some milestones along the way but for me it’s about team success, and that was what was so enjoyable about last year.” Ask his special moment of last

year and the answer will surprise; the series win against the West Indies in the Caribbean. “Whilst I didn’t get many runs it’s still probably the proudest moment I’ve had playing for New Zealand because you saw guys performing in tough conditions. “Different guys stood up and you know the team is travelling well when you see that happen.” McCullum began his year with 224 against India at Eden Park, a key element in a thrilling victory; he ended it with a staggering exhibition of hitting, 195 against Sri Lanka last week. So how does he know when, or if, to move his batting up a gear? “I guess it just unfolds sometimes,” he said. “Throughout my career I’ve tried to play in that manner. Having a lot more trust in my defence [helps]. “If you know your defence is capable and you’re able to bat a period of time then your attacking game can unfold, rather than having to attack because you don’t have confidence in your defence. “It’s nice to start making contributions.” Sri Lanka, having been put through hoops by McCullum at Hagley Oval, have plans to handle him over the next few days at the Basin. Captain Angelo Mathews wasn’t about to divulge them but said patience was the key against McCullum. “When a guy smashes you all over the place and gets almost a double hundred it’s quite hard to set fields because he was not orthodox. “He was going for his shots,” Mathews said. Both captains are likely to send their opponents in should they win the toss on a green, grassy Basin strip.

The look is nothing new, but the appearance can sometimes deceive. The pitch will be hard, have bounce but should give batsmen room for expression from the second afternoon. New Zealand will be unchanged if Tim Southee is over an ankle injury. Kane Williamson’s sore shoulder is unlikely to stop him playing. Sri Lanka will be strengthened by the return of left arm spinner Rangana Herath, the world’s leading wicket taker in 2014. They are also expecting far more from their batting champion Kumar Sangakkara, who had a rare double failure, 6 and 1, in Christchurch. “When he fails it’s a coach’s nightmare,” Mathews said. “You have to throw at him for hours and hours. He’s a very hard worker and he’s desperate to go out and get some runs, so I’m sure he will do it tomorrow.” Mathews confirmed Sri Lanka’s batsmen have been using two-piece balls in their preparation. Two piecers swing more than the four piece. “It’s just to counter the swing and try to get used to it and so make you feel better. “That’s what we’re going to expect because Southee and [Trent] Boult are bowling like that and we’ve got to try and push them back.” On which subject Mathews was emphatic; Southee and Boult sit on a par with the likes of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, the South African pace champions. “They’re one of the best attacks. “They are taking a lot of wickets with the new ball, and striking with the older ball. “They’ve certainly got skill and are certainly right up there.” - NZH

The scrapping of today’s Woodville-Pahiatua Cup through a lack of entries has forced Kelly Burne to rethink Survived’s future. The Waipukurau trainer had viewed the race as an ideal confidence-booster for her Group One winner. “I opted for the race thinking it might be a soft kill, but they’ve deleted it,” Burne said. “There’s an open 1400 metres at Manawatu on January 10 so we might have to go there instead.” Survived has been below par in his last two appearances with unplaced runs in both the Gr.2 Tauranga Stakes and again in the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes. “I wasn’t at Trentham, but they absolutely crawled and he overraced in a pocket,” Burne said. “They sprinted at the top of the straight and he couldn’t quicken. “I was disappointed with the run, but everyone told me not to be.” Despite encouragement, Burne opted not to head to Ellerslie for the Gr.1 Zabeel Classic on Boxing Day. “A few people were telling me to take him there and that all he needed was a trip, but I didn’t have the confidence.” The scratching of the Woodville-Pahiatua Cup has reduced the meeting to a six race card with Burne’s focus on her two-year-old debutant Charkee in the Taraua Club Juvenile. The son of Sakhee’s Secret and a winning Red Ransom mare is raced by a large syndicate that includes Survived’s breeder-owner Don Gordon. Charkee won a trial at Woodville in the spring and will get his opportunity to make an early impact from an ideal gate. The total trotting professional, he led than trailed and got up the passing lane to down Kincaslough, with favourite Stent never properly clear in third after trailing Sheemon through. The winner and Stent will soon head to Australia where their main aims will be a $200,000 trot at Menangle on March 1 and the even richer Great Southern Star series at Melton six days later.

While Sheemon should handle the rigours of the racing, trainer Townley admits he is unsure about the Australian summers. “I actually don’t think he likes the heat that much,” says Townley. “Since we have been up here on the hot days he isn’t that keen, whereas the other horses where we are stabled don’t seem to mind it. “So if it got really hot in Australia it could well be a problem,

but maybe he will get used to it.” That might be Sheemon’s only weakness as he can sprint, stay, has gate speed and corners well while hard racing never seems to bother him. Still only a five-year-old he looks set to keep the Townley name, which has been so successful with trotters on both sides of the Tasman for decades, prominent for a few seasons to come. - NZH

Aberdeen on top Aberdeen moved top of the Scottish Premiership on New Year’s Day with a 2-0 win over St Johnstone after Celtic’s match away to Partick Thistle was postponed. The Dons took advantage of the waterlogged pitch at Firhill to leapfrog the Hoops into top spot with their sixth successive league win, the first time they have achieved such a feat in 26 years. Aberdeen are now a point ahead of Celtic, who have a game in hand, and are the first side outside the Old Firm to lead the Scottish top flight after New Year since 1992. - AFP

Hey big spenders The January transfer window in Europe is poised to open, with the bulk of the spending set to be done by clubs in the English Premier League. Among the continent’s leading nations, clubs in Spain will be the first ones to be able to sign reinforcements, with the window there opening on Friday and shutting on January 30. In England, Germany and France, the window opens on January 3 and will not shut until February 2. Premier League teams splurged a record STG835 million in the summer and they should again be the busiest in this shorter window. Most of the movement is unlikely to come before the final, crazy days of the window, but in the meantime much of the talk will surround Manchester United, who are said to have no upper limit on the amounts they can spend. - AFP

West Brom still safe Freshly appointed West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis watched from the stands yesterday as his new club drew 1-1 at West Ham United, with Saido Berahino cancelling out Diafra Sakho’s neatly constructed 10th-minute opener. The result kept West Brom a point above the relegation zone. Second-bottom Burnley showed extraordinary spirit to come from behind three times and force a 3-3 draw at Newcastle United, whose manager, Alan Pardew, is on the verge of joining Crystal Palace. Spurs stun Chelsea BY TOM WILLIAMS Harry Kane starred as Tottenham Hotspur crushed Chelsea 5-3 in a New Year’s Day blockbuster to leave Jose Mourinho’s side level with Manchester City at the Premier League summit. Kane, a 21-year-old Spurs youth-team graduate, scored twice and had a hand in two other goals as Mourinho conceded five goals for only the second time in his managerial career. It left Chelsea and City with completely identical records, after former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard had scored the decisive goal in the champions’ 3-2 win over Sunderland. Spurs leapfrog Arsenal into fifth place. Diego Costa put Chelsea ahead in the 18th minute at White Hart Lane by tapping in Oscar’s shot after Eden Hazard had hit the post, but Kane drilled in from the edge of the box on the half hour.

Danny Rose put Spurs ahead in the 44th minute and Andros Townsend extended the hosts’ lead from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time after Kane had been felled by Gary Cahill. Nacer Chadli teed up Kane to make it 4-1 early in the second half and Kane returned the favour after Hazard had reduced the arrears, with Chelsea captain John Terry netting a further consolation in the 87th minute. Earlier, Lampard had celebrated the extension of his loan move from City’s sister club New York City FC by coming off the bench to score the winner against Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium. City, who left goalkeeper Joe Hart on the bench, went 2-0 up through a sensational 22-yard shot from Yaya Toure and a neat finish by Stevan Jovetic. But just as they had done in their 2-2 draw with Burnley,

Top sporting moments of 2014 T here’s a whole new year of sporting goodies to look forward to, including a World Cup double that New Zealand teams, on current form, could conceivably win, which would make it a very good year indeed. It would be interesting to see what odds the TAB would give on such an outcome; history says it ain’t gonna happen, but sport’s a funny thing, and you never know. 1992 was probably our best shot at picking up the cricket one, but Inzamam Ul-Haq took that one away from us. Caught an interview with Martin Crowe recently which I’d never seen before; he laid the blame for that loss squarely at John Wright’s feet (Crowe had pulled up lame, claimed he had to save himself for the final, and Wright had to take over as captain). But all that’s history, as is last year, with a whole lot of super highlights from it, including one of Mid Canterbury rugby’s finest performances, ever. On the biggest stages there were so many top moments, and in picking a top three in the memorable stakes it’s hard to leave out Lydia’s last day of the year, or Valerie’s whole year, or that magnificent try where Kieran Read was a tower of strength after taking a pinpoint high kick from Aaron Cruden, stood in the tackle waiting for Captain Incredible to come charging around and then slipped a superb

pass for McCaw to score in the corner - great, great moments. But as any punter will tell you, you can’t pick ‘em all, and here’s the three that most stuck in my mind for 2014. The All Blacks were down-andnearly-out against the bravest of Irish teams, but launched one last desperate attack from deep in their own 22. The ball swept through many pairs of hands, and so nearly went dead on several occasions, but the spirit of this team kept it alive until Ryan Crotty sealed his spot in history by sailing across the line to score the winning try - it’s impossible to imagine that any All Blacks fan was still sitting in their armchairs for any of the last three or four minutes. That victory only served to enhance the ABs’ growing reputation as the best last-ten-minutes team in the world. A plucky Welsh team had already learned that it was no good playing top-class rugby for 70 minutes, and the Irish learned that even 80 (or 82) wasn’t enough against the Men in Black. Second place goes to Brendon McCullum, and the day he broke the long-standing record of New Zealand’s top score in a cricket test (previously held by Crowe, who threw away his chance at hitting the big one), and in doing so broke the magic 300 barrier and joined a very select club of top cricketers. While there’s

some who churlishly claimed that the Indians weren’t on their best form, didn’t have their hearts in the game - you can only play what’s in front of you, and anyway McCullum’s stellar performances with the bat since then tend to make such arguments look just as silly as they really are. Those critics appear not to have noticed that McCullum went on to add two double centuries (and nearly another) to his tally, joining The Don, Michael Clark, and - nobody else, ever, to accomplish that feat. But the most memorable sporting moment of 2014 was also a surprise one - in an event that I hadn’t even particularly planned to watch. During the Commonwealth Games I was channel-hopping as you do, and landed on a couple of Kiwis doing OK in the big cross-country bike thing. It quickly became a lock on that channel, as the two no-names from New Zealand were actually giving the big guys of the sport a decent run for their money, in true Kiwi fashion. A long way from home it was obvious that at least one of

them was going to feature on the podium along with the world champion types, as it was down to four riders left, and this in a sport that rates up there with anything as a very serious gutbuster. In the last few laps it was in fact a Kiwi, Anton Cooper, who was somehow still in front, and they had dropped off the Canadian favourite, and there was a sniff, just a sniff, that Cooper might wear out the Aussie hard-man who was stalking him constantly, and the third-placed Samuel Gaze might just be able to pip both of them for the gold. Halfway through the last lap the unbelievable happened; just as you could see the Aussie about to take advantage of the huge mental pressure he’d been putting on the Kiwi front-runner by sitting constantly on his wheel, and blasting past for the glory, Cooper dug deeper than most thought possible, stood up on the pedals and sprinted, sprinted hard, and caught the Aussie napping right at the perfect moment. Picture one Australian with a stunned-mullet look on his face, and while his concentration was broken (or completely shattered) suddenly he feels the wind of another flying Kiwi tearing past him, and instead of an Australian one-two on the podium, it’s a stunning New Zealand quinella. Finest moment of the sporting year that was 2014.

Slow down, breathe, stay safe on roads Sue Newman

olice must be wondering what more they can do to stop people killing themselves and other people on New Zealand’s roads. With two days still to run in the official Christmas-New Year holiday period, we’ve already exceeded last year’s road toll of seven. The year before it was six. While we’re not in danger hitting the historic high of 37 recorded over the 1972/73 holiday period, our numbers this year are going in the wrong direction. Accepting that speed plays a major part in fatal road smashes, police introduced zero tolerance around speed limits. While they could have expected accident numbers to drop, inexplicably they haven’t, however, there’s a school of thought that suggests the new limits may be contributing to the accident rate because drivers are focused on their speedo rather than the road. Last year’s statistics show that 43 per cent of crashes (fatal or not) were caused by drivers losing control of their vehicles, 23 per cent by people travelling too fast for the conditions and 19 per cent by inattention. The remainder listed failure to stop or give way, inexperience or fatigue as the cause. Behind many is two things that cannot be controlled, the human factor - it cannot be predicted, planned for or legislated against and fate, that puts a non-offending vehicle in the path of another. The flow-on effect of road smashes is counted not only in those who are killed, but in the social and medical costs around those who are injured. Those victims may live with the impact of an accident for the rest of their lives; society will carry that cost. We do, however, have control over our speed and our patience. Yes, slow drivers, people towing and heavy trucks are frustrating, but is it worth trying to save a few minutes travel time to die in the attempt?

Taking life to the extreme

hen I came on board the ship Silver Explorer, my job title was ‘lecturer’. Usually the main hazard of such a position is stage fright, but with Antarctica you do have to expect the unexpected: in this case precipitous cliffs and frigid swims were also part of the deal. Having explained the intricacies of the Antarctic Treaty System and outlined who’s who of the Heroic Era explorers, it was time for a little more adventure. That adventure started off innocently enough. Upon landing at Neko Harbour I was sent up the hill to scout out the options for sliding down the snow slope. I hiked up, called in the snow conditions, marked out the starting point – so far so good.

All that remained was to slide back down. Unfortunately, I took the instructions to report back a little too literally, with the commentary continuing as I picked up speed: ‘good gradient ... not too much friction ...’ Upon looking down, however, all coherence was lost to the kind of bloodcurdling scream that belongs in the sound bank of a horror movie audio technician. While my terror was heard all over the ship, it only resulted in two suspected rup-

tured eardrums and a very pale Safety Officer… These days, I am fondly known as the ‘on board crash test dummy,’ and my colleagues carry spare earplugs, just in case. Every time we offer an activity like hiking or snow sliding, I’m the first to be sent up and pushed over the edge for a close encounter with gravity. Apparently seeing as I am the youngest member of the expedition team, my bones will heal the fastest - here’s hoping we never have to test that hypothesis. Taking a dip in the freezing waters of Antarctica resembles the treatment for those broken bones, but it is not practised for its medicinal value. Instead, going for a swim in the Antarctic is a rite of passage known as the ‘polar plunge’.

If diving into water that is -1.5 degrees Celsius sounds unpleasant, that’s because it is – it usually results in animated facial expressions, purple toes, and a great photo opportunity for the on board photographer, but you do get a certificate at the end for your efforts. By the end of this season I have a feeling my walls will be plastered with certificates from end to end, and I may need to update my business cards to reflect this new-found skill of being hurled into fast, cold and extreme situations (and coming out in one piece). ‘Lecturing’ has certainly taken on a new meaning over the past few weeks, but all those ski crashes on Mt Hutt that I cursed about at the time have actually primed me for this position better than I could have imagined.

In brief Stampede claims 36 Grieving relatives identified the bodies of loved ones a day after a stampede during New Year’s celebrations along Shanghai’s historic waterfront area killed 36 people. Some families lashed out at authorities, accusing them of being unresponsive to their plight and failing to prevent the disaster. The chaos began about a half-hour before what was supposed to be a joyful celebration of the start of 2015. In the end, dozens were dead and 47 people were hospitalised, including 13 who were seriously injured, according to the Shanghai government. - AP

Cuomo dies Mario Cuomo, a son of Italian immigrants who became an eloquent spokesman for a generation of liberal Democrats during his three terms as governor of New York but couldn’t quite bring himself to run for president, has died. He was 82. Cuomo died yesterday of natural causes due to heart failure at his home, the same day his son Andrew started his second term, according to a statement released by the governor’s office. More bodies recovered More ships arrived yesterday with sensitive equipment to hunt for the fuselage of AirAsia Flight 8501 and the more than 145 people still missing since it crashed into the sea five days ago. Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo said efforts would be stepped up as long as the weather allowed. “We will focus on underwater detection,” he said, adding ships from Indonesia, Malay-

sia, Singapore and the US had been on the scene since before dawn yesterday to try to pinpoint wreckage and the allimportant black boxes — the flight data recorders. The Airbus A320 crashed into the Java Sea on Sunday with 162 people on board. Sixteen bodies have been recovered so far. Seven were announced Friday morning, six of which were found by a US Navy ship, said Suryadi B. Supriyadi, of the National Search

and Rescue Agency. Nine planes, many with metal detecting equipment, were also scouring a 13,500 square kilometre area off Pangkalan Bun, the closest town on Borneo island to the search area. Two Japanese ships with three helicopters were on their way to the area, Soelistyo said. But he said bad weather, which has hindered the search the last several days, was a worry. Drizzle and light clouds covered the area yesterday

morning, but rain, strong winds and high waves up to 4 metres were forecast until Sunday. Strong sea currents have also kept debris moving. Soelistyo estimated the fuselage was at a depth of 25 to 30 metres, and vowed to recover the bodies of “our brothers and sisters ... whatever conditions we face.” So far, one victim of the crash has been returned to her family — the first of many painful reunions to come. - AP

Rescue of second migrant ship mounted A helicopter has been sent to help an uncrewed merchant ship carrying 450 migrants which has lost power as it heads toward the Italian coast. The airforce says the 60-metre-long Sierra Leone-registered Ezadeen is floating 65 kilometres off Capo di Leuca, the tip of Italy’s heel, in choppy seas. The chopper’s crew hopes to get it under control. “Because of the difficult weather conditions the ship can only be boarded from the air,” the air force said in a statement. Prior to losing power, the

ship was moving at a brisk seven knots. It was spotted by a coastguard plane 130 kilometres offshore shortly after nightfall. Using the ship’s radio, one of the people on board told the coastguard the crew had jumped ship. The coastguard asked for help from Icelandic patrol boat Tyr, which was in the area on a mission with Frontex, the European Union’s border agency. The Tyr drew alongside the runaway ship, but weather conditions made boarding impossible.

The three doctors on board the Icelandic vessel would be winched onto the Ezadeen to treat any unwell passengers, the air force said. The new high-seas drama comes two days after Italian sailors intercepted a freighter carrying more than 700 mostly Syrian migrants which had been heading for the rocks of Italy’s southeastern shore on autopilot. That vessel had been abandoned by the people smugglers who had navigated it from Turkey via Greek waters. In that incident, the Mol-

dovan-registered Blue Sky M cargo ship got to within eight kilometres - or 45 minutes’ sailing time - of a disaster before six navy officers were lowered onto the ship by helicopter and brought it under control. The Blue Sky M’s human cargo included some 60 children and two pregnant women, one of whom gave birth on board as the boat steamed towards catastrophe, according to the Italian Red Cross. Many of the migrants on the ship were treated for hypothermia and broken limbs. - AFP

Two cops, suspect shot Two police officers were injured in a New Year’s Day shoot-out after they pulled over two vehicles, one of which was stolen and had two bodies inside, authorities said. The two officers stopped an SUV and a truck around 4pm on a highway outside of the city, Lt. Michael Baylous of the West Virginia State Police said. The SUV had a North Carolina licence plate that showed it had been stolen. As the officers were conducting the stop, the driver of the truck shot at them with a handgun, wounding both officers, Baylous said. One officer returned fire, wounding the suspect in the leg. Baylous said the driver of the SUV fled the scene and hid but later turned himself in without incident. The driver of the truck also fled and was eventually taken into custody, he said. - AP

Diplomat suspect A senior Chinese diplomat has been removed from his position and is being investigated for an unspecified disciplinary violation. A two-sentence statement from the Foreign Ministry did not offer more details about the removal of Assistant Foreign Minister Zhang Kunsheng. Zhang was the head of the ministry’s protocol department. Zhang was the highest-ranking diplomat to be hit by a corruption probe launched by President Xi Jinping. - AP

Coup attempt Soldiers loyal to Gambian President Yahya Jammeh went house-to-house in search of opponents after the longtime leader blamed “terrorist groups” for staging a coup attempt earlier this week. Jammeh alleged that the coup plotters had received backing from some foreign countries. “I live for the Gambia and I will die fighting for the truth. No human being can do anything to me, my government or the Gambia. It was not a coup. It was an attack.” - AP

We are seeking a motivated Loader Operator to join our existing long serving team. The loader operator’s primary responsibility is to feed resource into the Agricultural Lime and Limeflour plants and load trucks with finished product for dispatch using a 2014 Komatsu WA480-8. You will also be expected to assist with maintenance and upkeep of fixed plants and depending on experience, operate other mobile and fixed plant from time to time.
