Busiest year ever for brigade

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade members are summoning new recruits hot on the heels of their busiest year ever last year.

The brigade had 465 callouts in 2017, which is about 10 callouts more than its last busiest year, which was about five years ago.

Callouts have consistently numbered well over 400 for at least the past seven years, indicative of a brigade which just keeps getting busier as the region’s population grows and puts pressure on

emergency services. The brigade has recently taken on an additional six firefighters, who will begin in the New Year.

The intake will boost the number to 36, the highest ever for the brigade. It represents a 20 per cent increase from the current level of 30.

Fire service management have yet to sign off on final details, such as confirming medicals, and will not be announcing the names of the firefighters for a couple of weeks.

However, Ashburton chief Alan Burgess was able to provide some details. He said one was female, which would take

the female contingent of the brigade up to two, and one was coming here from another brigade in Otago.

Among selection criteria had been availability to respond to daytime calls, as pressure comes on firefighters to drop tools at work in order to respond to the town’s high number of callouts.

Supportive employers were paramount to this, and the brigade could not operate without them, Burgess said.

Camping ground bursting at seams

Tinwald Domain may not sound like a prime holiday destination, but more and more families are flocking there for their annual New Year camping trips.

Ashburton Holiday Park is marketed by its owner, the Ashburton District Council, as the hidden gem within the domain.

And according to managers, Dave and Celia Folley, it’s a gem that many are beginning to dis-

cover, with this New Year’s period in particular seeing them run off their feet.

“It’s a bit of a forgotten spot here,” said Dave.

“We have been so busy compared to last year,” added Celia.

From December 23 onwards the grounds have been full, although pressure began to ease yesterday as some groups headed home. The approximate 70 powered sites were all taken, with numbers also high in the

adjacent non-powered sites and tent area.

New Year’s Eve revellers included 26 people from Thailand in for two nights. The group was travelling in five big motorhomes around the South Island.

Others were mainly family groups from throughout Canterbury, with many from Christchurch and Timaru.

It was a cold night with rain, but that did not put a dampener on celebrations, with people en-

joying quiet drinks and socialising at their various camp sites.

Dave said guests were attracted by the facilities of a swimming pool, playground, open spaces, bike track, and nearby Lake Hood for boating and swimming, and the fact the park was dogfriendly.

The camping ground was extended about three years ago and a new guest lodge is soon to open on site.

Among campers was Michele

and Chris O’Connell from Christchurch, with their two children, Harrison and Liliana.

They had camped around the South Island in the past, but liked Tinwald as it was close to home, allowing Chris to pop back when he had a job to do.

And it was close to Lake Hood, enabling them to boat with friends who also stayed in the park.

“It’s the best camping ground I have stayed at,” Michele said.

2017 busiest year ever for brigade From P1 Burgess was confident of the brigade continuing to meet demand in the face of increasing calls, however, he did not think the increase last year was large, or that calls would necessarily increase year on year.

“It think it just becomes a little bit of business as usual, even though it’s a record high number, it’s not significantly higher than we are used to in the last few years,” he said.

“I guess the disappointing part about it, it’s an increase, whatever way you look at it. Hopefully we get a bit of a downturn this year,” he said.

Burgess was pleased to be welcoming the new recruits, and they would ensure the brigade was well resourced.

“We are in pretty good shape,” he said.

Elizabeth Margaret Way Harper DBE 20-6-1937 to 18-12-2017

W

hen John Harper spotted a small, dark-haired 17-year-old teenager across the table tennis table in the Westerfield Hall, he knew he’d met his future wife.

That young woman was Elizabeth Horrell who in 1995 became Dame Elizabeth Harper, Ashburton’s first recipient of a DBE, for her services to Save the Children.

On December 18, the woman who gave her heart and soul to the Save the Children, died at the age of 80.

While her public recognition was for services to the children’s charity, husband John and son Robert say her life spanned many more interests and activities.

She was the first born and only daughter of Lagmhor farmers Faith and Jack Horrell, and with five younger brothers to keep in line, John believes her organisational skills were well honed early in life.

Elizabeth’s school years were spent at Lagmhor, Ashburton High School and then Craighead and she went on to work as an occupational therapist at Ashburton Hospital.

While she was a farmer’s daughter and became a farmer’s wife, Elizabeth was also a farmer in her own right, helping run the farm as well as keeping teams of farm workers well fed. She established her own registered coloured sheep flock and a large pig fattening unit. She went on to become a supplier and then a director of the South Island Pork Group.

At any given time Elizabeth could be involved with Save the Children, working on the farm, working alongside district nurses on night shifts, chairing board meetings, making jam for the SFC charity shop, sitting as a companion with people who were terminally ill, working as an Ashburton Benevolent Fund trustee, singing in several choirs, working within her church and tirelessly assisting anyone in need.

But more than any of those activities, her family remember her as a selfless, loving and caring mother.

Life in the Harper household was lived

by the calendar. The phone would ring and Elizabeth automatically walked to the calendar to see where she could fit in a new appointment or activity.

Her life was devoted to people, her husband and son say, and her pleasure was gained by working quietly in the background rather than starring in the limelight.

No matter how busy, she never complained and simply got on with life, happy to help out where ever she was needed.

No matter who she was with – Princess Anne, Prime Ministers or fellow members of a volunteer organisation, she was never any different, her family said.

Her public profile was very much about Save the Children. She joined this organisation in 1969 after a request from her aunt Naomi Rickard to drive a car during the annual appeal.

She was secretary from 1971 to 1985 and president from 1985 to 1990. She also spent time as South Island representative to the national executive, South Island vice president and was national president from 1989 to 1993.

In spite of taking on national office, Elizabeth continued to work in the Ashburton shop as well as making marmalade and knitting garments as local fundraisers.

In 1994 she received a Save the Children international award for distinguished and meritorious service and in 1995 was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

That honour did not sit easily with Elizabeth.

John recalls when the official letter arrived she stood looking at it for some time before stating she could not accept it.

Eventually she agreed, but made it very clear she was accepting for Save the Children, to raise the organisation’s profile, not for herself.

While she was entitled to use the letters DBE after her name, John said she always preferred to be known as just Elizabeth, never dame. It didn’t change her a jot, he said.

Police investigating a fire that destroyed an historic building near Queenstown say they have spoken to a couple they were seeking.

The couple were believed to have been staying in Mount Aurum Homestead in Skippers Canyon on the night of the fire. Yesterday, the pair contacted police, who say they are satisfied the two had reasons for not coming forward before now. The homestead was a category-two listed historic place.

Rubbish dumping fines

Dame Elizabeth Harper John and Elizabeth retired to Ashburton from their Hackthorne farm in 1998 but Elizabeth’s work as a volunteer continued and branched into new fields.

The couple’s first son Paul died in 2011 and their only daughter Janet was killed in a car accident as a five-year-old in 1968.

Elizabeth is survived by husband John, son Robert and her six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

National wants councils to be able to throw a bigger book at people dumping rubbish on public property. Environment spokesman Scott Simpson is sponsoring a member’s bill which will increase the maximum fine for littering from $400 to $1000. The move comes after a media report that 30 councils spent $2.4 million on clearing illegally dumped rubbish in 2016. “This is money that could be better spent on things like roads and parks for the community,” Simpson said.

Emergency services were called to Waring Road, Taupiri, about 6.40pm Monday. One person died at the address, said a police spokeswoman.

Ashburton Trust walks into a brave new world

Savage dog attack on cat encouraged

The Ashburton Trust is a vastly different organisation to the original founded in 1950. The past year for the trust has been one of the most significant in its history as it reshaped itself and changed the business model that has been its foundation for more than 60 years.

Reporter Sue Newman looks at that year and at the new, sleek trust that is now caring for millions of dollars of community assets.

T

here are very few businesses that have the courage to take a business model that has served them well for more than half a century, toss it out and write a new one.

But that’s exactly what the Ashburton Trust has done over the past year.

Building on the foundations laid by the previous trust board, elected members have effectively sold off half of their business to allow them to make more money by doing less.

It’s a commercial dream.

For decades the trust owned hospitality businesses, made money, gave money to the community and held a solid monopoly over liquor sales in much of the Ashburton District.

Its foundations were shaken in 2004 when the public voted to end that monopoly.

Supermarkets were able to sell liquor and new non-trust owned restaurants and bars started to pop up around town.

To its credit, the trust regrouped, looking at ways it could keep itself in business as it faced new competition.

Its response was to head on a growth path that saw new bars and restaurants open across town.

Some thrived, some struggled and the odd one failed.

The upshot, though was that the trust was pushed into a downward trading spiral.

Competition and the high cost of servicing debt on its rapidly expanding empire meant it was in trouble, serious financial trouble, and for several years it was fighting fires on every front to stay in business.

But to the credit of its elected members, the trust board took the brave step of reinventing itself.

A decision was made to sell off its businesses, pay down debt and launch a new

Through the tail end of 2016 and much of last year the sell-off continued and today, by choice, it owns just one business, the Devon Tavern.

Internally, the trust has gone from employing many to employing just one full timer and one part timer. It has moved out of its large office into a shared office and it’s quietly doing the job of getting its finances back on track.

And back on track they are. For the first time in years, the trust has posted a profit, more than $400,000 in the bank and for the first time in years it’s looking at a bright future.

Gone are the days when the trust was hitting the headlines for opening new bars and making a public splash. Our reshaped trust has just one focus, making money so it can

give a share of that money back to the community.

For the trust 2017 has been – on the surface – an uneventful year, but behind the scenes it has probably achieved more of long-term significance in the past year and a bit than it has in decades. It’s now an organisation that puts its efforts into making money rather than spending it.

With the reshaped and refocused trust, the community can look ahead to a future where grants and donations from trust coffers increase and add to the already significant amounts of money flowing into the community from gaming machine profits through the Lion Foundation.

In the future the trust is likely to continue to change as it refocuses and grows and could well become a significant investor in more than just its own bricks and mortar.

An animal inspector is on the hunt for the owners of a large dog that seriously injured a cat – after being encouraged to maul the animal.

A man and a woman were walking a “large, muscular dog” through Colonial Knob in Porirua on Monday morning, SPCA Wellington reported.

A 10-year-old cat was stretched out enjoying the sunshine with his owner and friends within the Camp Elsdon boundaries.

When the dog owners saw the cat they told the dog to “sic em” repeatedly and continued to encourage the dog after he had caught the cat.

“The attack lasted approximately 20-30 seconds, and only ended thanks to the quick thinking actions of a fellow camper, who ran towards the dog yelling,” SPCA Wellington wrote on their Facebook page.

“This startled the dog to drop the cat and run back to his owners, who purportedly laughed before continuing through Colonial Knob and out of sight.”

The cat has considerable injuries, including a broken pelvis that means he can’t walk. He is currently under vet care.

Inspector Gina Kemp was called out to the camp by a very distressed cat owner.

“It is incredibly concerning that a dog is being actively encouraged to bait other animals. It is especially concerning that the attack was instigated unprovoked and with witnesses present.

“I am very concerned this will not be an isolated incident – or that this behaviour may escalate if the perpetrators are not found.”

Commenters on social media were split with their blaming.

Some wanted the dog destroyed while others wanted the owners to face the consequences.

The dog was white with tan patches on it.

Push to have bridge priority raised

Pressure is growing to have a second bridge across the Ashburton River moved up the priority list.

The bridge currently sits on the NZ Transport Agency list with a priority four rating but the Ashburton District Council is pushing to have the rating changed to priority three.

In its transportation activity plan for the next three years, the Ashburton District Council has tagged the bridge for completion by 2026.

Earlier last year during at a transport agency briefing to the council, it was made very clear that any work on the bridge was unlikely to start for at least 10 years. The council is budgeting for work to start in the next two or three years.

In its activity report the council said that traffic volumes had increased by 20 per cent over the past 12 years and there was now a significant pinch point through Ashburton as traffic built up along State Highway 1 at either side of the bridge.

The second bridge, planned for the end of Chalmers Avenue, is

designed to take a large percentage of local traffic off the central town bridge.

At the June briefing with NZTA, Ashburton’s councillors made it clear to agency staff that pushing out the bridge’s construction was not acceptable.

Councillors also made it clear that the new bridge should be part of several other roading changes – traffic lights at Walnut Avenue, Tinwald corridor improvements and the development of a fourlane highway through Ashburton.

In its plan, the council has noted that doing nothing is not an option. Traffic volumes would increase over time, exacerbating current congestion issues meaning travel times would become unreliable, road user frustration would increase thus decreasing safety and detrimental economic impacts would have both district and regional repercussions.

The council has made it clear to NZTA that doing nothing is not an option. The only question was when the work would proceed and whether the transport agency could be convinced to pay more than the current proposal of 51 per cent of costs.

The Ashburton District Council is pushing to have a second bridge across the Ashburton River moved up the priority list.

A mother and son joined forces to make light work of one Ashburtonian’s gardening jobs ahead of Christmas.

Carolyn and Mathew Clough lent a hand to Ollie Hurst just before Christmas – tack-

ling his weeding, tending to his roses and trimming his buxus hedging.

Carolyn said both her and Matt really enjoyed helping out Ollie.

“Afterwards we were amazed to see the beautiful car that Ollie is making,” she said.

“He is a very talented man.”

Neville and Ann Trueman are grateful to the Harborne family for granting their Christmas wish.

Essays not fines Wanaka police believe they may be the first police station in the country to allow underage drinking offenders to write an essay about what alcohol does to the teenage brain rather than pay a hefty fine.

Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell, of Wanaka, said over the New Year period Wanaka, more than any other area in the central lakes district, has particular issues with young people coming into the centre of the town and drinking alcohol in the liquor ban area, getting into fights or harming themselves.

He said in previous years police used the liquor ban as an early intervention tool, warned the young person, moved them along and did not issue a lot of offence notices, but it had made no difference.

“In fact, it was getting worse.’’

This year he said police decided to take firmer action by issuing alcohol infringement offences, with fines ranging from $200 to $250. Those under 17 would be given the option of writing an essay “as a lot of them couldn’t pay those fines’’.

He said the “alternative resolution to holding people accountable for their ac-

tions’’ began on December 28 and about 10 underage drinkers issued with an alcohol infringement offence have chosen to write an essay.

He said they had to go to the Wanaka police station, read scientific literature about the dangers of binge-drinking and alcohol on teenage brains and write an essay about it.

“If they did that they would be issued with a warning and allowed to go on their merry way.’’

Grindell said the police website had had positive feedback from parents “thanking us for giving their teenagers the positive experience they have had with the police and hopefully the learning they have had’’.

He said almost all the offenders had come from cities and towns north of Wanaka in the South Island and had ranged in age from 14 to 16.

The initiative would end this week.

Grindell said underage drinking was not confined to Wanaka.

“It is a New Zealand issue but it is a bigger issue in Wanaka than anywhere else in the Central Otago area.’’

Auckland’s popular Takapuna Beach is closed to swimmers after raw sewage apparently flowed into the water between the red and yellow flags.

Lifeguards shut the beach at 3.30pm on Monday, when a fault in the wastewater network caused a stormwater drain to overflow.

The flags were taken down and the beach was closed for swimming for the remainder of the day — with the water quality labelled “high risk”.

The Auckland SafeSwim website continues to regard the beach as high risk, saying there is an “elevated health risk due to poor water quality; temporary noswim warning in effect”.

Meanwhile, surf life savers are warning that 2-3m swells are predicted yesterday for west coast beaches, bringing large surf and strong currents.

Hazard warnings are in place to alert beachgoers to the conditions.

People are being reminded to always swim between the flags at a lifeguarded beach.

Chilling out far from the crowds at New Year Susan Sandys

T

here’s something to be said for just chilling on New Year’s Eve. There is so many iconic destinations in the world which host amazing events, involving fireworks, light shows, and other glittering spectacles such as the crystal ball drop in Times Square.

However, they have a major disadvantage, and that is crowds, crowds and more crowds.

I remember being in Sydney a couple years ago and bustled in early to the harbour bridge just like everyone else was doing on New Year’s Eve. Myself and my daughter went through an entranceway to an enclosed outdoor area where we would be able to see the fireworks.

There was plenty of space, it was right on the harbour, and we got a birds’ eye view of the bridge. It was set to be incredible.

There was just one problem.

It was only 4pm. Others started to amble in, and all of a sudden it became very cosy, with people all around who seemed to have no understanding of the concept of personal space.

It was also hot, there did not appear to be a lot of food and drink options, and who knew where the toilets were.

We had to meet a friend there, but then we decided just to decamp and meet her at a nearby restaurant instead.

It meant we lost our spot, but we got to have tea in style, sitting down, catching up, and sipping on wine.

My friend had come in from the suburbs, doing a typical Sydney commute of driving to a place where she could park her car, then catching a bus from there.

We later saw the early fireworks from a few blocks away, and headed home before the midnight ones even started. That was good enough for us.

Currently I’m camping at Temuka. It’s hardly a destination spot for New Year’s Eve, and I don’t think I have heard a single firework go off since arriving there in the late stages of 2017.

However, if New Year is about reflecting on the year that has been, looking forward to the year ahead, and catching up with the people who matter most, well chilling in a Kiwi camping ground fits the bill perfectly.

13 dead after Iranian protests Protests across Iran saw their most violent night as “armed protesters” tried to overrun military bases and police stations before security forces repelled them, killing 10 people.

The demonstrations, the largest to strike Iran since its disputed 2009 presidential election, have seen five days of unrest across the country and a death toll of at least 13 with the slaying of a police officer announced late Monday.

The protests began in Mashhad over economic issues and have expanded to several cities, with some protesters chanting against the government and the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Hundreds of people have been arrested.

Tortoises again being born on Galapagos Island After more than a century, tortoises are once again being born on the Galapagos Islands after local rats were exterminated with poison, a process that required the temporary removal of local birds to prevent them from also being poisoned.

The presence of voracious black rats on Pinzon Island, had led to the sharp decline in various species – doves, lizards and snakes – as well as the giant tortoises, given that the rodents regularly feasted on their eggs.

Given the rat infestation, in December 2012, experts used a helicopter to disperse poison on Pinzon Island.

Earlier studies had warned of a medium to high risk for the Pinzon sparrowhawks because the birds could eat the dead rats, but that possibility

The number of rats that have been killed by the poison is not known, but it is presumed that most of them died in their nests, given that the odour of decay was minimal in the area.

Over two years of monitoring after spreading the poison, eventually no rats remained on Pinzon Island and in 2014 it was declared rodent-free and now the doves, lizards and snakes are making a comeback.

It is believed that the rats arrived in the archipelago with the first sailors to come there – pirates and whalers – in 1800.

Now the big challenge is to avoid a reintroduction of the rodents.

According to the New York Post, Paris spent much of the evening “running around with her ring, telling everybody they are engaged”. The source also noted Paris “looked really happy”. Back in March, Paris said her actor beau is “the one” and hinted that she was thinking about starting a family, presumably with him. “I’ve never been surer of anything in my life,” she said at the time. “He’s so incredible in every way.”

Summer means barbecues S

ummer means barbecues and while we might have a slight blip on the radar of long hot days at the moment, as long as the rain stays away, cooking outdoors is the way to go.

Just about any meat can be turned into a barbecue treat, it’s all in the seasonings and the sauces.

Even the humble sausage can become a great barbecue treat if it’s given a glaze or served with a tasty homemade sauce.

Simple chilli chicken 12 chicken drumsticks, allow 2-3 per person 1 T sweet chilli sauce 1 T soy sauce 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 piece fresh ginger, sliced 1 lemongrass, crushed ■■ Put the drumsticks in a baking dish.

■■ Add sauces and a little oil toss well.

■■ Add garlic, ginger and lemongrass, toss again and leave for three hours.

■■ Drain and cook.

Zippy pork skewers 1 stem lemongrass, crushed ½ C coconut cream 2 T fresh ginger 1 green chilli 2 kaffir lime leaves 1 T brown sugar 1 t turmeric 1 lemon, zest and juice 750g pork, cubed ■■ In the food processor combine all ingredients except the pork.

■■ Mix through cubed pork.

■■ Marinate three or four hours.

■■ Skewer and cook over a hot grill.

Barbecued beef burgers 500g beef mince 300g sausage meat 1 small onion chopped 2 T plum sauce ¾ C bread-

of any silver skin Spice mix: 1½ t paprika ¼ t ground cumin Good pinch cayenne pepper

crumbs 1 egg 6 pita pockets 1 large tomato sliced 1 onion sliced 6 lettuce leaves ■■ Mix meats with onion, sauce, crumbs and egg ■■ Shape into patties and refrigerate for 30 minutes or longer ■■ Cover with cling film if leaving longer to prevent moisture loss.

■■ Heat barbeque and turn to low heat ■■ Cook for about 6 or 7 minutes each side or until cooked through.

■■ Warm pita pockets in oven and prepare the tomatoes and lettuce and onion for the burger.

■■ Put sauce in burger and assemble.

Spicy barbeue lamb rump 3 lamp rumps,

trimmed

■■ Place spices in a small bowl and mix with a dash of olive oil to form a thin paste.

■■ Heat barbecue grill until hot.

■■ Rub lamb rumps with spice mixture.

■■ Place on the grill for 10 minutes, turning once for medium-rare lamb.

■■ Remove from the grill, cover loosely and leave to rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Coriander kebabs 500g rump steak 2 T whole coriander seeds, roughly ground or crushed 1 t ground black pepper 4 whole cloves garlic, crushed 3cm piece ginger, peeled and grated 1 t flaky salt 2-3 T oil 1 red onion, peeled and quartered 2 red peppers, cut in 3cm dice ■■ Cut the steak into large 3cm pieces and place in a sealable plastic bag.

■■ Add the crushed coriander, black pepper, garlic, ginger, salt and oil.

■■ Toss well to coat. If time permits, refrigerate for up to 8 hours.

■■ Peel the layers of the onion apart.

■■ Thread onion, pepper and beef onto 4-6 well-soaked bamboo skewers ■■ Cook on a lightly oiled hot BBQ

plate, turning regularly to cook evenly.

■■ Serve with a tomato salsa.

Hoisin pork ribs ½ C hoisin sauce 1 T paprika ¼ t chilli flakes ¼ C cider vinegar ½ t salt 1kg piece pork ribs ■■ In a small bowl place the hoisin, paprika, chilli, vinegar and salt.

■■ Place the ribs in a large dish and pour the marinade over.

■■ Mix, cover and refrigerate until needed.

■■ Set a barbecue to a medium heat.

■■ Cook pork ribs, brushing with extra marinade as they cook.

■■ They need about 15 minutes each side or until cooked through.

■■ Cut into serving sizes, and serve with rice and a green salad.

Carrot and sesame burgers 750g carrots, peeled and grated 410g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 small onion roughly chopped 2 T tahini paste, plus 1 t to serve 1 t ground cumin 1 egg 3 T olive oil 100g breadcrumbs zest 1 lemon, plus 1 tsp juice 150ml pot natural yogurt 6 buns, rocket leaves, sliced red onion Sliced avocado and chilli sauce, to serve 3 T sesame seeds ■■ Put a third of the grated carrot in

a food processor.

■■ Add chickpeas, onion, 2 T tahini, cumin and egg.

■■ Whizz to a thick paste, then scrape into a large bowl.

■■ Heat 1 T oil in your largest frying pan.

■■ Tip in the remaining carrot and cook for 8-10 mins, stirring until the carrot is softened.

■■ Add to the whizzed paste with the breadcrumbs, lemon zest and sesame seeds.

■■ Add seasoning, then mix together well with your hands.

■■ Divide the mixture into 6, then using wet hands shape into burgers.

■■ Cover and chill until serving.

■■ Mix the yogurt with the remaining tahini and lemon juice, then chill.

■■ Heat barbecue and brush the burgers with the remaining oil.

■■ Cook the burgers for 5 mins on each side, until golden and crisp.

■■ Warm or toast the buns.

■■ When the burgers are ready, spread each bun with some of the lemony sesame yogurt.

■■ Add the avocado, top with the burger, onion and rocket.

■■ Finish with a drizzle of chilli sauce.

Lemon garlic prawns 500g fresh green king prawns 1 t grated lemon rind 2 T lemon juice 1 t garlic, crushed 2 t lemon pepper seasoning 2 T olive oil 2 t parsley, fresh or dried ■■ Mix all ingredients together.

■■ Toss in pan or on the barbecue until the prawns go pink and are cooked.

■■ Season with freshly ground pepper and salt.

EASY SUDOKU

Date puddings with caramel sauce Spray oil 2 C of dates 1 C water 1 t baking soda 120g butter ¾ C brown sugar 2 t vanilla essence 2 eggs ¼ t salt 1¼ C self-raising gluten-free flour Caramel sauce: ¾ C cream ¾ C brown sugar ½ t vanilla essence 150g butter ■ Preheat the oven to 170ºC. Spray a 6-hole Texan muffin pan with spray oil.

■ Place the dates and water in a saucepan and bring to the boil.

Turn the heat down and simmer for about 4 minutes, or until there is about 1 tablespoon of water left.

■ ■ Remove from the heat and leave to cool for about 2 minutes. Add the baking soda to the dates and stir until combined.

■ Meanwhile, cream the butter and sugar with an electric beater until light and fluffy. Beat in

the vanilla essence and add the eggs, one by one, beating well after each addition. Beat in the salt.

Fold in the flour and the date mixture. Spoon the batter into the muffin pans until they are half to three-quarters full.

Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of a pudding comes out clean. o make the caramel sauce, place the cream, sugar, butter and vanilla essence into a saucepan.

Stir over a low heat until the butter has melted.

Bring to the boil then turn down the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.

Serve the puddings with the whipped cream and caramel sauce.

Allenton star player in local cricket comp

It was a year of numbers for cricket in Mid Canterbury, and unfortunately, they were often not good ones.

The year started off with Allenton in the driving seat of the senior club competition, clearly the team to beat and eventually going on to win nearly all the silverware that was available to them.

Only the Bevan Stroud Memorial eluded the side, while they collected the T20 Trophy, the Pritchard Shield, the Muirhead Rosebowl, the Studholme Shield and the J R Mousey Fielding Trophy.

The personal honours were spread around however, with Allenton captain Jeff Naish taking the the ACCA wicketkeeping trophy while Lyall Jemmett picked up the best bowling performance award.

It was Coldstream’s Ben Crequer however who took out batting honours for the season.

The opening bat took home the Supporters Club Trophy for the highest batting aggregate and also the G Murray Memorial for the highest batting average in senior cricket.

Methven opening bowler Ash Mills was awarded the Ken Butler Memorial for the

most wickets taken during the season.

The 2017/18 started off with a much more even playing field, with Methven and Tech battling it out in the T20 final, with Methven taking the title.

The Pritchard Shield has shifted form again, with Methven struggling, while Lauriston lead the charge at the top of the table, with others chasing hard.

The start of the year also saw a disappointing end to Mid Canterbury’s Hawke Cup campaign.

Their bid for the 2017/18 edition started better, with some good wins in the buildup to the competition, but lost their first game against South Canterbury, losing by eight wickets.

For the next generation of Mid Canterbury cricketers it has been a good year, with the Ashburton College 1st XI earning promotion back to division one, saying goodbye to their departing Year 13s with back-to-back wins against Shirley Boys’ High School.

Several players were selected to represent Canterbury at national tournaments, with Will Graham and Richard Turpie being named in the under-19 squad, while Archie Redfern and Will Smith were named in the under-17 side.

Ashburton College 1st XI captain Will Graham was a standout figure with both bat and ball for the side this year, earning himself selection in the Canterbury under-19 side.

Romelu Lukaku could feature for Manchester United against Derby in the FA Cup on Friday, less than a week after he was taken off on a stretcher with a head injury.

United’s top scorer Lukaku, who has netted 15 times this season, had played every minute in the Premier League before his enforced with-

drawal against Southampton on Saturday due a clash of heads with Wesley Hoedt.

That ruled Lukaku out of Monday’s victory over his former club Everton, though boss Jose Mourinho has revealed the Belgian striker was keen to be involved regardless.

Gorges triumphs as rain blights Classic German second seed Julia Gorges has survived an ASB Classic firstround battle of attrition to topple Puerto Rican opponent Monica Puig 6-4 4-6 6-2 in Auckland.

Lauren Davis Defending ASB Classic champion Lauren Davis has been dumped out of this year’s event, humiliated 6-1 6-2 by the unheralded Sachia Vickery.

Having muscled her way through the qualifying rounds, the 22-year-old Vickery made easy work of her American compatriot, winning in just over an hour.

Davis, who made a name for himself in Auckland last year with her tenacious style and grit, was barely going through the motions by the end of the match.

She managed to win just 41 per cent of service points – including just 19 per cent of her second-serve points – and was visibly frustrated with herself. The 24-year-old lashed out in frustration on multiple occasions.

Vickery, meanwhile, was far from perfect but nailed more than 60 per cent of her first serves and capitalised on Davis’ implosion ruthlessly.

The Florida-based world No.122 will face either Lara Arruabarrena or Veronica Cepede Royg next, with the victor likely to play Agnieszka Radwanska.

Ashleigh Barty has exited the Brisbane International after a first-round defeat.

Shock exit for Barty After a shock Brisbane International first-round exit, Australian No.1 Ashleigh Barty insists it was the opponent – not the occasion – that got the better of her.

World No.17 Barty was thrashed 6-3 6-2 in just over an hour by Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko – ranked 25 spots lower than the Australian – at a shellshocked Pat Rafter Arena on Monday night.

Eighth seed Barty admitted it felt “different” dealing with the added pressure of being the nation’s top-ranked female ahead of the Australian Open.

But the 21-year-old had no concerns about her mindset before the year’s opening grand slam, instead saluting the power-serving Tsurenko on Monday night.

“There were a few butter-

flies, first match of the season, at home, but it was excitement more than nerves,” Barty said.

“It’s a little bit different (being in the spotlight as No.1) but I prepare for every single match exactly the same.

“And any players in the top 50, when you’re not playing your best, they’re going to punish you.

“It’s obviously disappointing.

It’s not the way I envisaged my first tournament of the year.”

Barty had arrived at her home tournament still buzzing from a stellar 2017.

She started that year at No.271, was Australia’s No.1 by October and finished in the top 20, knocking over five top 10 players along the way.

But Barty only showed glimpses of brilliance against Tsurenko, a Brisbane semi- fi-

nalist in 2013. Tsurenko, 28, clinched the first set with her fifth ace and had her foot on Barty’s throat when she broke in the opening game of the second after the Australian double faulted.

She booked a second-round clash with 2012 Brisbane International champion Kaia Kanepi of Estonia.

Barty, who has never been beyond the third round of a grand slam, wasn’t reaching for the panic button.

“I didn’t work my butt off all last year to spit the dummy after one match,” she said.

Barty will contest the Brisbane doubles – where she is seeded second with fellow Australian Casey Dellacqua - before setting her sights on the Sydney International and then Melbourne.

Time catching up with tennis stars Nick Kyrgios says the tennis season is too long, while Andy Murray has called for a study into why tennis’ senior stars are suddenly breaking down as four of the sport’s Big Five race the clock to be fit for the Australian Open.

But Roger Federer says it’s not rocket science why his chief rivals Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Murray are all battling injuries less than two weeks out from the year’s first grand slam in Melbourne.

Djokovic (elbow), Wawrinka (knee) and Murray (hip) haven’t played competitively since Wimbledon, while Nadal, if he starts, will enter the Open with just one tour match under his belt in two months as he also fights to overcome a knee injury.

All up, 12 of the world’s top 20 suffered serious injuries in 2017, but it comes as no surprise to Federer.

The 36-year-old Swiss pointed out at the season-ending championships in London that age was merely catching up with most of the sport’s biggest names.

“Shave 10 years off our age and we probably will do better,” Federer said.

“A lot of the guys are just touching 30-plus, you know. Back in the day, at 30, a lot of guys were retiring – Edberg, Sampras.

“It was like normal at 29, 32, to start looking towards the end of your career. Now you guys expect everybody to play till 36.

“When somebody is injured at 31, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, how is this possible?’

“Actually, it’s a normal thing.”

Federer, who enjoyed an incredible renaissance after spending the last six months of 2016 rehabilitating from knee surgery, agrees with Murray that lengthy breaks from the game are the only way to extend a career.

But, unlike most, the pragmatic Swiss refuses to blame brutal hard courts or the gruelling length of the season for the rising injury toll.

Interestingly, the single-handed maestro also believes doublehanded backhands can be crippling. “(A) wrist (injury) to me is not something that comes from overplaying, especially if it’s your left hand,” Federer said.

“That’s just a move I can’t relate to because I don’t play doublehanded.

“From what I’ve been told, the wrist is always in a troubled position with that flicking that’s going on more and more these days.

“I think Andy (Murray) even broke his wrist. Maybe that was something else, I’m not sure. Del Potro has had three of them. I think these things tend to happen.”

Crane tipped for debut England appear set to hand a Test debut to novice leg-spinner Mason Crane in Sydney.

Coach Trevor Bayliss has given the strongest hint yet that the 20-year-old will win his maiden cap in the Ashes finale, with England able to “look at some different people” as they try to break their duck in a series lost in Perth before Christmas.

Since then, England have recorded a more encouraging draw in Melbourne to at least ensure they will not suffer a third 5-0 whitewash in four tours to Australia.

Crane’s graduation is not entirely contingent on England dropping badly out-of-form Moeen Ali, but that seems the most likely scenario.

Either way, if the leg-spinner does begin his Test career at the SCG tomorrow, he will be doing so on the same ground where his grade cricket tour Down Under last winter culminated in an unexpected Sheffield Shield call-up for NSW. Asked if Crane is ready for Tests,

“We think he’s a guy that has got the goods, and the more he plays at this level the better he will get.

As for Moeen’s future, the short and long-term may well be divergent.

After the off-spinning all-

rounder’s three wickets at an alarming cost of 135 each in four Tests so far, and only 136 runs at under 20 an innings, it is hard to have much current confidence.

He is a famously mercurial talent, however – a fact not lost on Bayliss.

“At the moment, the number of runs and wickets makes it one of his lows,” said the coach.

“But just a couple of months ago, we were singing his praises as one of the best all-rounders in the world.”

The contrasting fortunes of opposite number Nathan Lyon, who has 17 wickets and has dismissed Moeen every time he has bowled at him in this series, appears damning.

But Bayliss added: “He’s different to Lyon, who gets over-spin.

“Mo doesn’t, and things don’t happen as quickly without the bounce that Lyon gets.

“Mo is a free spirit, and one or two shots or wickets and he will be off and running. So I’m not concerned long term,” said the former NSW batsman.

Starc ramps up bid for SCG Test return Australia spearhead Mitchell Starc has bowled in the nets as he ramps up his bid to play the fifth Ashes Test.

Starc missed the fourth Test at the MCG because of a bruised heel but is desperate to return for the SCG series finale.

The left-armer took part in fielding drills yesterday then spent over half an hour bowling off his full run-up.

Meanwhile, Steve Smith didn’t train yesterday because of a sore back but the skipper was expected to have a hit today then play the Test that starts tomorrow.

Starc, who rolled his arm over longer than Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins or Jackson Bird during the session, then had a long chat with the team doctor and physio.

“I haven’t spoken to him but he looked like he was bowling quick, running around and not limping,” Cummins said.

“He’s really keen to play and pretty con-

fident he can play. They’ll see how he recovers ... the last couple of weeks it’s certainly got a lot better.

“He’s played a lot of cricket now. He knows his body pretty well and what he can get through.”

Selectors and medicos will take several factors into account before making a call on the express paceman, including the fact that Starc will be one of Australia’s most important assets on their ensuing Test tour of South Africa.

“You’d love Mitchell Starc to be playing,” pace icon Glenn McGrath said.

“If he’s 100 per cent fit I’d play him. If he’s not quite there then unfortunately they might have to let him have a rest and have him get ready for South Africa.”

McGrath presented Smith’s side with their baggy pink caps ahead of the 10th anniversary of the McGrath Foundation’s partnership with the SCG Test.

Australia spearhead Mitchell Starc hopes to play the fifth Ashes Test tomorrow.

Joshua v Parker ‘close’

Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has warned his counterpart David Higgins to be ready for the hard work as they look to lock in a world heavyweight unification fight between Joshua and Joseph Parker.

A contract has been produced that will see Parker put his WBO belt on the line alongside Joshua’s WBA and IBF belts, and Higgins is expected to soon fly to London to sign the dotted line.

The two camps have agreed on the money split that will give Parker about a third of the profit for the fight – which was believed to be worth about $NZ12 million.

While Team Parker have jawed off while trying to set up the bout, Hearn said it was time to get serious.

“We have a long way to go,” Hearn said.

Parker and Joshua have looked likely to meet in the ring sooner or later over their young careers, with Parker having the mandatory challenging rights to the Britton’s IBF title.

A fight looked like it may have come out of that, however Parker’s handlers saw the opportunity to claim the WBO title, which he did against Andy Ruiz in December 2016.

“I think that was probably the right decision at the time, certainly a lot easier,” Hearn said.

“It has been a long process but it is the perfect fight for everybody.

I feel it’s a fight that deep down everybody wants so generally when that happens, as long as everybody is sensible, you’ll get there in the end.

Hunt failed those who helped him - Waugh Karmichael Hunt has let down Michael Cheika and other rugby hierarchy who provided him a silver opportunity to keep alive his football career, according to Wallabies great Phil Waugh.

Waugh has expressed sympathy for the Queensland Reds back after he was stood down by Rugby Australia over his arrest and drug possession charge. But the 79Test flanker believes it’s unlikely Hunt will ever play for the Wallabies again after coach Cheika gave him his debut last year, given it’s the second time in three years he’s faced drug-related charges.

“The sad thing is that Rugby Australia and Cheika and the Reds really stuck by Karmichael when they probably could have thrown him out the first time, although it happened before they actually took him on board,” Waugh told Fox Sports.

“They picked him in squads that perhaps people questioned whether he should have been in.

“He’s had opportunities that other players haven’t had. It’s just a wasted opportunity for such a talented athlete.

“There are so many other players who would just do anything

to get this opportunity. And they watch instances like this and they go, ‘why would you throw it away?’

“This is just poor behaviour and a bad choice.”

Hunt was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, with police allegedly finding a white powder after searching the 31-year-old in a car park in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley at about 12.40am. He was charged with two counts of drug possession and is set to face Brisbane Magistrates Court on January 29.

Rugby Australia is waiting for more detail on the allegations but

agreed it was in all parties’ best interests Hunt, who was fined $2500 after pleading guilty to four counts of drug possession in 2015, be stood down from training and playing.

Waugh was concerned about Hunt’s life after sport.

“I actually really genuinely feel for the guy because his last 12 months in rugby has been superb,” Waugh said.

“It’s just a sad story because the light at the end of the tunnel’s hard to see, the second time around, particularly because he’s come so far in the game in such a

short period of time. “People are talking about the financial impact as of today, but you’ve got to look at what the financial impact is post-career.

“You already know how difficult it is for players to transition out of professional sport to life after sport, and certainly these allegations don’t help.”

Hunt, a former NRL and AFL player who joined the Reds at the end of 2014 shortly before his previous run-in with the law, has represented Australia in six Tests, earning a two-year contract extension in November.

Tough year for Ko Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has described her 2017 season as an “emotional roller coaster ride”.

The 20-year-old failed to add to her 14 career LPGA titles in 2017 having a down year for end high standards but still finished second in three events and had 11 top 10s across the year.

She held the number one spot until midway through June before slipping down to world number nine at season’s end.

The Olympic silver medallist last won on the LPGA Tour in July 2016.

She began the year with a new

coach, new caddie and a change of clubs and Ko described the season in an Instagram post as an ‘emotional roller coaster ride’.

“2017 has been a year that have taken me on an up and down emotional roller coaster ride... however when I reflect back on my year now, I think every moment has been an experience to grow from, and a learning curve for me both on and off the golf course.

“Though some may class my season “disappointing”, but I would say, that my ‘17 season was still full of positives.

“Can’t say enough thank you’s to god, my family, friends, sponsors and fans for being by my side each step of the way. Going to keep working hard to come back more positive, patient, strong and smiley!!!

Ko is expected to return to the LPGA for the second event of the year, the Australian Open in Adelaide starting February 15.

Mourinho hits back at Pogba criticism Jose Mourinho has taken a swipe at Paul Scholes and other critics after Manchester United got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory at Everton.

Former United midfielder Scholes recently said while working as a TV pundit that Pogba was “just strolling through games” and “doesn’t look fit”.

But Pogba played an influential role as United ended a run of three successive Premier League draws at Goodison Park on New Year’s Day and manager Mourinho took the opportunity to hit back.

Mourinho said: “I think the only thing Paul Scholes does is to criticise, which is a different thing.

“Not every one of us has to be phenomenal like he was as a player. That doesn’t all mean we have to be phenomenal. Paul tries to do his best all the time and sometimes he plays very well. Sometimes he doesn’t play so well.

“It’s not Paul’s fault that he made much more money than Paul Scholes. It’s not Paul Pogba’s fault, it’s just the way football is.

“But I think Scholes will be in the history (as) a phenomenal player, but not as a pundit. I prefer to look at him as a phenomenal player that gives so much to the club I am proud to represent.

The 17-year-old has spent 2017 studying to become a Formula One driver. Armstrong has spent a year in Italy at the Ferrari Young Driver Academy along with five other drivers learning all the different aspects of elite level single-seater racing. In most regards it is just like school. “You get an email each day with a comprehensive schedule for the following day,” Armstrong said. Armstrong had a busy race schedule as well, competing in the Italian and German Formula 4 championships, so a lot of time during the week was spent on preparing for the race weekend.

Rain to boost Darci Mac’s chances The weather has foiled plans for Darci Mac so far, but conditions will be more in his favour at Omakau today.

The six-year-old will close out his southern sojourn in the Alexandra New World Central Otago Summer Cup (1400m) with Jason Laking to guide the topweight’s fortunes.

“I sent him down there in the hope of striking off tracks, but he’s struck good ones,” New Plymouth part-owner and trainer Allan Sharrock said.

“He’s still gone good races and been a bit unlucky.

He’s got 60kg, but they’re getting a bit of rain down there and that will help him.”

Darci Mac ran fifth at Ascot Park two runs back before the son of Darci Brahma was denied racing room in the straight when sixth in the Listed Hazlett Stakes (1200m) at Wingatui on Boxing Day. “He’ll come home after this one,” Sharrock said.

“He’s won over $130,000, he’s been a very good servant to the stable.”

Meanwhile, star galloper Kawi is progressing well toward the Gr.1 JR & N Berkett Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham on January 20 in his pursuit of an eighth top-flight victory.

“He galloped super this morning,” Sharrock said.

“He’ll go to the trials at Cambridge on Tuesday week.

I’ll put the blinkers on and let Jason (Waddell) get a feel of him.”

The lightly-tried four-year-old was a maiden winner over 2200m two runs back at Ellerslie and he returned there on New Year’s Day to bag the thick end of the $50,000 stake in the Stella Artois 2100m.

“They have been two very good efforts, he came from last at the 500m the first time and he’s finished off very strongly again,” trainer Shaune Ritchie said.

A son of Sebring, Daytona Red is part-owned by Peter Mitchell, whose familiar silks have been carried to multiple Group One success across Australasia.

“It’s lovely to see Bonecrusher’s colours back winning at Ellerslie again,” Ritchie said.

They were sported on New Year’s Day by Alysha Collett, who also has a good opinion of Daytona Red. “He’s a beautiful staying horse who relaxes and he travelled well all the way,” she said. “He was a bit raw up the straight so he can only keep improving.”

The 2018 harvest season is approaching and we need to dig up some new talent to help us tackle the paddocks. This season we will have V-Bin truck and trailer units and drivers based at both Pendarves (northeast of Ashburton) and Timaru. If your application is successful you will find yourself carting potatoes to McCain’s and storage sheds or onions to a local packaging shed.

Up for offer are multiple fixed-term positions. These will run for approximately 8 to 10 weeks starting mid-February. You will be rostered on for 12 hour shifts and will be required to be flexible with day and night shifts. An agricultural background and knowledge of the Mid and South Canterbury areas will be advantageous.

Our ideal applicant will be a Class 5 driver who wants to join a respected and professional company. Sport BMX star marries Australian BMX cycling star Sam Willoughby, 26, has celebrated his wedding by dancing with wife Alise Post 15 months after he was declared a tetraplegic. The pair wed on New Year’s Eve before 180 family and friends in San Diego. Willoughby, a London Olympics silver medallist and two-time world champion, broke his back in a training accident in 2015 after which he was not guaranteed to walk again. Social media images showed him standing at the alter with his American sweetheart during the exchange of vows before the pair received applause during the first dance.

Golfers had sunshine, with just a little cloud, and temperatures reaching a perfect 20-ish degrees, as they played in the Tinwald Golf Club’s annual New Year’s Tournament yesterday. “It’s a good turnout, I think it’s the best we have had,” said club captain Bruce Collins (pictured). About 115 golfers from throughout Canterbury participated.

Fours favourites on track at champs There has been a sensational start to the qualifying rounds of the fours competition at the national bowls championships in Dunedin this week.

In section two at Kaikorai Bowling Club, the composite team of father and son Graham and Bradley Down, Finbar McGuigan, all of Wellington, and Caleb Hope, of Gore, notched up a hard-fought 16-12 upset victory over Blackjacks and tournament favourites Justin Goodwin, Shannon McIlroy, Gary Lawson and Ali Forsyth.

Despite the shaky start, they posted the necessary two wins to qualify with a game to spare.

For McGuigan, 17, Hope, 19, and Bradley Down, 19, swapping cricket for lawn bowls has certainly brought rewards at these championships.

Hope qualified over the weekend for section play in singles and and also in pairs with the team’s fours lead, Graham Down, 60, while Bradley is also through to the knockout stage of the singles and the post-section play of the pairs with fours partner McGuigan.

The first round of qualifying in women’s fours was also not without its upsets, with Ashburton bowler Sandra Keith’s composite team of fellow Blackjacks Amy McIlroy, Serena Matthews and Selina Goddard falling

However, yesterday morning’s fourth win was not all plain sailing against June Pickles’ winless St Clair quartet, but Edwards prevailed 17-13.

The first of the post section rounds begins today, with the women playing pairs and the men involved in singles.

New Zealand believe they have the momentum to seal a Twenty20 series victory against the West Indies despite the weather threatening to wash out the final two matches of their three-match contest. New Zealand won the first match in Nelson by 47 runs before rain ended the second match at Mt Maunganui on Monday. The no-result ended the West Indies’ six-match losing streak on tour and means the 2016 T20 World Cup winners now have a chance to square the T20 series.

Haka a viral hit A video of the Black Ferns performing the haka ahead of a World Cup semifinal attracted more than 21 million views on the World Rugby website. The pre-match haka ahead of the side’s win over the USA in Ireland was the most watched video on the official website for World Rugby. The Black Ferns went onto win the World Cup for a fifth time after defeating England 41-32 in the final. The video attracted almost 20 million more views than the next most watched – a rare penalty shootout between Netherlands and Belgium at the European under-20s championships. That pulled in 1.2 million views.
