Sparkles’ new year surprises BY ERIN TASKER

The Mt Somers Holiday Park turned into a bustling maternity ward on New Year’s Day as one of its guests welcomed 11 new, healthy babies. Sparkles – a golden retriever – was on a camping trip to ring in the New Year with her family when she unexpectedly went into labour. Sparkles’ owners - Robyn and Richie Bryden and seven-yearold daughter Isabella from Ashburton – were caught off guard. “We must have misjudged her due date; we thought she had a couple of weeks to go,” Mrs Bryden said. last few hours they have all got wee fat tummies and they are eating and sleeping beautifully,” Mrs Bryden said yesterday.
It’s Sparkles’ second litter; just nine months ago she welcomed eight purebred puppies. Her second litter has made
history though – it’s believed to have been the first birth at the Mt Somers Holiday Park. The family were packing up to
go home yesterday, but with 11 extras in tow the return journey was a little more challenging than the trip up.
