Sparkles’ new year surprises BY ERIN TASKER

The Mt Somers Holiday Park turned into a bustling maternity ward on New Year’s Day as one of its guests welcomed 11 new, healthy babies. Sparkles – a golden retriever – was on a camping trip to ring in the New Year with her family when she unexpectedly went into labour. Sparkles’ owners - Robyn and Richie Bryden and seven-yearold daughter Isabella from Ashburton – were caught off guard. “We must have misjudged her due date; we thought she had a couple of weeks to go,” Mrs Bryden said. The family arrived at Mt Somers on Saturday night with Sparkles and the puppies’ dad Buddy in tow, but Sparkles wasn’t acting like her usual self. Mrs Bryden said she knew something was up. When they woke on New Year’s Day, Sparkles was trying to hide in the awning of the tent. She was in labour. Mrs Bryden and some friends quickly developed some midwifery skills and rustled up some newspaper and warm towels. A long day began. After six hours of labour, Sparkles had given birth to 12 puppies. Unfortunately one didn’t make it, but the remainder are all doing well. “In the

last few hours they have all got wee fat tummies and they are eating and sleeping beautifully,” Mrs Bryden said yesterday.

It’s Sparkles’ second litter; just nine months ago she welcomed eight purebred puppies. Her second litter has made

history though – it’s believed to have been the first birth at the Mt Somers Holiday Park. The family were packing up to

go home yesterday, but with 11 extras in tow the return journey was a little more challenging than the trip up.
