Sparkles’ new year surprises BY ERIN TASKER

The Mt Somers Holiday Park turned into a bustling maternity ward on New Year’s Day as one of its guests welcomed 11 new, healthy babies. Sparkles – a golden retriever – was on a camping trip to ring in the New Year with her family when she unexpectedly went into labour. Sparkles’ owners - Robyn and Richie Bryden and seven-yearold daughter Isabella from Ashburton – were caught off guard. “We must have misjudged her due date; we thought she had a couple of weeks to go,” Mrs Bryden said. The family arrived at Mt Somers on Saturday night with Sparkles and the puppies’ dad Buddy in tow, but Sparkles wasn’t acting like her usual self. Mrs Bryden said she knew something was up. When they woke on New Year’s Day, Sparkles was trying to hide in the awning of the tent. She was in labour. Mrs Bryden and some friends quickly developed some midwifery skills and rustled up some newspaper and warm towels. A long day began. After six hours of labour, Sparkles had given birth to 12 puppies. Unfortunately one didn’t make it, but the remainder are all doing well. “In the

last few hours they have all got wee fat tummies and they are eating and sleeping beautifully,” Mrs Bryden said yesterday.
It’s Sparkles’ second litter; just nine months ago she welcomed eight purebred puppies. Her second litter has made
history though – it’s believed to have been the first birth at the Mt Somers Holiday Park. The family were packing up to
go home yesterday, but with 11 extras in tow the return journey was a little more challenging than the trip up.

Tori Spelling has silenced marriage gossips with a loving family photo. The former Beverly Hills, 90210 star made headlines in December amid allegations her husband, Dean McDermott, had cheated. While she has declined to address the rumours directly, it appears reports the couple’s seven-year marriage is on the rocks are all wrong. “Happy New Year! Love, The McDermotts,” Spelling tweeted with a link to a photo of the family. The image shows the actress cuddled up to her husband, while their two eldest children lounge nearby. The post came just days after Spelling appeared “stressed” and stepped out without her wedding band, according to E! News.

Strong arm of the thief Massachusetts police are searching for a strong-armed thief who carried a 250-pound safe out of a restaurant. Kevin Hynes says a man walked out of his Stockholders Restaurant in Weymouth on Sunday night lugging the vault. Surveillance tape shows the man entering a side door at the rear of the restaurant, heading down the stairs and coming back up carrying a large object wrapped in a trash bag. No arrests have been made. Hynes isn’t saying how much money was in the safe, but he’s offering a $2500 reward for information leading to the man’s arrest. He says he’s since bought an even heavier safe and bolted it to the concrete floor.

US Fresh Prince actor James Avery dies

US actor James Avery, most famous as Uncle Phil in hit 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has died on New Year’s Eve aged 68, his publicist says. With a deep baritone voice, Avery regularly played judges, professors or doctors on TV shows in the 1980s and 90s, as well as extensive voice work, including on animated projects. His first bigscreen role was an uncredited part in 80s classic The Blues Brothers, and he enjoyed a prolific TV and movie career stretching over three decades. But the role most people will remember him for is as Philip Banks on the 1990s NBC series, a role model to the young Will Smith’s character, a fictionalised rapper version of himself. “I’m deeply saddened to say James Avery has passed away,” his Fresh Prince co-star Alfonso Ribeiro tweeted. “He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly.” Born James LaRue Avery in Virginia and raised in New Jersey, he had worked until September, shooting the film Wish I Was Here, which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this month. Avery died in hospital in Glendale, outside Los Angeles, “due to complications from open heart surgery”, his publicist, Cynthia Snyder, said in an email. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Barbara Avery, his mother Florence Avery, and his stepson Kevin Waters.

Brewery responds to Starbucks letter with $6 cheque A small Missouri brewery has responded to a cease and desist letter from Starbucks by sending the coffee chain a cheque to cover what it calls the profit from use of the word “Frappicino” - a cheque for $6. Exit 6 Pub and Brewery in the St. Louis suburb of Cottleville named one of its brews the Frappicino, with one c instead of the two that Starbucks uses for its blended beverages. That prompted an attorney for Starbucks Coffee Co. to send Exit 6 a letter on December 9. The letter from attorney Anessa Owen Kramer noted that the Seattle-based company “is the owner of a number of world-famous trademarks, including the well-known FRAPPUCCINO trademark.” It said that the words are “phonetically identical” and that Exit 6’s use of Frappicino “is likely to cause confusion, mistake.” In his sarcastic response letter, Exit 6 owner Jeff Britton also wrote that the brewery “never thought that our beer drinking customers would have thought that the alcoholic beverage coming out of the tap would have actually been coffee from one of the many, many, many stores located a few blocks away.” Exit 6 posted the letter on its Facebook site and responded with a letter to “Mr. Bucks.” The letter said Exit 6 would no longer use the term “Frappicino” and would instead refer to its beer as the “F Word.”

Hayley weds French beau Kiwi singing star Hayley Westenra has married her French fiance, Arnaud Sabard, in a secret wedding. About 90 guests were present to witness the wedding in North Canterbury on Sunday. A source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as guests had been told to keep the ceremony secret, said Westenra had four bridesmaids, including younger sister Sophie, one of Mr Sabard’s sisters and Paige, the daughter of Christchurch singer Elizabeth Braggins. When contacted, Westenra’s father, Gerald, was coy, in keeping with the strict confidentiality deals the glossy magazines demand. But the marriage was confirmed by Woman’s Day editor Sido Kitchin, who has signed the couple to an exclusive magazine deal. When news of the engagement broke last year Mr Westenra said both families were delighted and were looking forward to the wedding.

Ashburton police are encouraging motorists to continue their “considerate and positive“ behaviour shown on the roads during the summer period. Senior Sergeant Grant Rus-
sell, of Ashburton, has been impressed with driver behaviour on Mid Canterbury roads during the past week, even though the high traffic volume has caused congestion and delays in some parts of the district. “I have been very mindful of how considerate people have
been on the roads and it’s been great. “But in the same breath I still want people to be aware of other drivers and to plan their trips if they are travelling a long distance so they can enjoy themselves when we get there,” he said.
With tighter speed restrictions in place, Mr Russell said speeds had been “pretty good” but he urged motorists to still keep it down. “The speed limit is not a goal, it’s something you’re not meant to go above.” Ashburton police are expected

Van plunges down bank, 8 injured A van crash which seriously injured eight people yesterday could have gone unnoticed for hours or even days had a man and baby not been thrown out as the vehicle rolled and dropped over a 15-metre cliff. They were noticed by a passing motorist who alerted emergency services at 6.48am, initiating a rescue in which six others were winched from the wreckage by helicopter, northwest of Napier, as thousands of motorists waited for State Highway 5 to reopen. Police at the scene, dispelling initial reports that the man had climbed back up to the road to raise the alarm, said they suspected he and the child had been thrown from the van as it rolled. A woman told police she stopped when she saw the man and infant on the grass beside the road. “She said she took the baby off him and he just collapsed,” an officer said. Officers said it would have been impos-
sible for anyone to have climbed up from the wreckage, a flattened white Toyota Regiuss van, a straight drop from the western side of the road about 2km north of Pan Pac’s Ohane block entrance between Te Haroto and Tarawera, about 80km from Napier. The van appeared to have lost control rounding a moderate left-hand downhill bend, over-corrected and hit a kerb, before veering across the road, overturning in the two oncoming lanes and bouncing across a verge and over the cliff. Skid marks along with glass and debris left some evidence on the road, but the wreckage could not be seen from the highway, mangled in bushes and trees at the bottom of the drop. Arriving with an ambulance already at the scene, along with fire crews from Bay View and Napier and the first police, the Lowe Corporation Hawke’s Bay rescue helicopter was joined by helicopters from Taupo and Rotorua in the rescue
and helping transport patients to hospital. All eight were admitted to Hawke’s Bay Hospital, where the six-month-old boy, a man aged in the 30s and a 12-yearold girl were in intensive care. A man and woman both aged in their 30s, and a girl aged nine were in a high-dependency unit. The conditions of the baby and man in intensive care were critical, the others serious, and two other men in general wards were said to be stable. Five were believed to have flown from Melbourne to Auckland on New Year’s Day. Hawke’s Bay rescue pilot Jeremy Bruce said power lines almost immediately above the wreck, along with tall trees surrounding it and a wind made the rescues “quite a challenging job”. He landed on the road on arrival, and waited while paramedics assessed how to get to the injured. - APNZ
New Zealand’s top road policing cop has hit out at irresponsible drivers following another holiday death on New Zealand roads. Police confirmed a motorcyclist who had been hurt in a crash at 12.55pm on the Taihape-Napier road yesterday has died - taking the Christmas-New Year holiday period road toll to seven. The motorcyclist’s death comes as several others battle for survival following a horrific morning crash. The holiday road toll period, which finished today at 6am, began at 4pm on Christmas Eve. Last year, six people died over the nine-day period - the lowest since Transport Ministry records began in 1958-59 - as far back as Ministry of Transport records go. Assistant Commissioner Road Policing, Dave Cliff, said all seven deaths this year were avoidable. “They all happened because of the same old mistakes being made. “The basic messages about slowing down, not driving when you’re tired, no alcohol, making sure all the vehicle occupants are safely restrained - all these things apply,” Mr Cliff said. The number of people killed on the nation’s roads in 2013 was the lowest since 1950 at 254 fatalities. - APNZ

Teachers anxious about pay By Myles HuMe

It has been an anxious time for some Mid Canterbury principals, but most believe their staff have been paid their full wage over the summer break – so far. The end-of-year school staff payment period is often the most complex, and that was realised this time last year when the new Novopay school payroll system left many of the district’s teachers and support staff out of pocket during Christmas and well into the New Year. Principals spoken to by the Guardian were anxious leading into Christmas, but confirmed their employees were in for a much better start to the year financially, with most wages going through correctly in two recent, but crucial, pay periods. But that did not come without its worries. Mt Somers-Springburn principal Brent Gray said he had received a “shambled” Staff Usage and Expenditure (SUE) report prior to one pay period that showed some staff were going
to be paid double their entitled holiday pay, raising tensions. “That gave us a real fright, we were worried we might have more going out of our operations grant than what was planned for, but when the pay went through I think it all went relatively okay.” School staff from almost every Mid Canterbury school took part in online and practical training courses to prepare themselves for entering data for the end-of-year and startof-year holiday pay periods to avoid a similar bungle to Christmas 2012. The Government invested $6 million towards this, with many staff sceptical that it would actually help – but it appears it has. Mount Hutt College emerged relatively unscathed, while Tinwald School principal Peter Livingstone experienced some problems with his SUE reports, but he remained hopeful the successful pay period that eventuated would lead on into next month. “I don’t see why it shouldn’t . . . we received confirmation our

data was all correct, but then again we got that last year and look what happened,” Mr Livingstone said. Minister responsible for Novopay Steven Joyce released the report on complaints and notifications regarding pay period 19 of the schools’ payroll. Pay Period 19, which was the
largest school pay of the year, paid 92,086 people a total of $221.89 million on the morning of 11 December, receiving complaints from 0.19 per cent of staff across the country. That was then followed by pay period 20 on December 21, but figures have not been released for that round.
Police have released a photo of the jandals left behind during an attack on a 6-year-old girl in a West Auckland reserve Wednesday night. Detective Sergeant Peter Litherland told media the girl was assaulted by a man in Glendene Reserve about 8.30pm in what police believe was a sexually motivated attack. The man, who fled the scene when the girl’s mother intervened, left behind a pair of “distinctive” white jandals. The medium-sized jandals have a “JayJays” logo on the bottom and written in white inscription as part of the sole. “The jandals appear to be reasonably new, one of the manufacturer’s labels is still stuck on the left foot and hasn’t come off yet. It’s possible that someone has given them to a family member or friend for Christmas,” Mr Litherland said. “If anyone recognises them please contact us - this crime is very concerning and we want to speak to this man.” - APNZ

In brief Perfect timing An eagle-eyed bus driver and the owner of a missing wallet perfectly timed their entry into the Dunedin Police Station yesterday. Sergeant Ben Butterfield, of Dunedin, said the man’s wallet had been left on the roof of his vehicle after he and his wife left the Waikouaiti races on New Year’s Day. The wallet was later spotted on the road by a passing bus driver. The bus driver yesterday visited the station to hand over the wallet, which contained cash and other personal effects, at exactly the same time its owner was asking about the missing item. “It is the first time I have ever seen that happen,” Sgt Butterfield said. “It shows the honesty of good Dunedin folk.”

Tertiary student numbers on rise for 2014 For the first time in three years, student numbers at the University of Canterbury (UC) are tipped to climb in 2014. This year the university, a popular tertiary study option for Mid Canterbury school leavers, was 2000 domestic fulltime equivalent students down on the 13,000 domestic students it had before the earthquakes. That was compounded with 400 fewer full time equiva-
lent international students. “Applications to enrol for new to UC international students have increased substantially compared with this time last year. Not all the applications will turn into enrolled students, but there is a renewed level of interest from international students,” Vice Chancellor Rod Carr said. “New to UC domestic applications are up about 1.7 per
cent year on year. It is very early in the cycle for the returning students. We will not know the exact number of students for next year until the first week of March, but signs are promising.” It comes as the university worked to find extra accommodation for new students, with plans to take some pressure off the Christchurch housing market by building accommodation
for students in partnership with the private sector. Construction is expected to start next year on a new 240bed hall of residence on the Dovedale campus, to be completed in time for the 2015 intake. UC was also granted up to $260 million by the Government to invest in rebuilding and new projects following the Canterbury earthquakes.

Inquiry after woman dies in hot pool Labour inspectors will today look into the death of a woman found at the bottom of a Tauranga motel thermal pool. The tragedy is the latest in a series of similar deaths that prompted a coroner to warn people not to bathe alone in hot pools. The owners of the Cameron Thermal Motel discovered 41-year-old Catherine Michell Hintz, of Palmerston North, about 4.30pm on New Year’s Eve. Ms Hintz died despite efforts from the owners and paramedics to resuscitate her - her heart restarted at one point but
she couldn’t cling to life. Her death follows that of 75-year-old Australian GP Kesho Sharma, whose body was found in a Rotorua motel’s thermal pool last month. After two similar deaths in Rotorua in 2007 and 2008, Coroner Wallace Bain recommended bathers avoiding bathing in thermal pools alone and that before anyone entered such water, it was stirred and the levels of hydrogen sulphide gas measured by the pool’s owner. Rotorua District Council bylaws require owners to test their geothermal pools’ hydro-
gen sulphide levels every six months, while pools in the Tauranga City Council district must be emptied and cleaned everyday, have specified amounts of water “flowing through” and have signs warning bathers not to put their heads under water. A WorkSafe NZ spokesman said yesterday the Crown agency hadn’t yet been notified of Ms Hintz’s death, but would follow it up. Any investigation would assess whether all council bylaws were followed. Cameron Thermal Motel owner Rein Van Staalduinen said the business was compliant
with such requirements. The motel remained open and was fully booked, while Mr Van Staalduinen said he was “fine” and “coping alright” after the death. “It’s always something that’s not a good thing to have happened, but we do cope.” It’s not known how long Ms Hintz, an identical twin, spent under water. Acting Senior Sergeant Cam Anderson said findings from her post-mortem, expected to be completed within a week, would be passed to the coroner. - APNZ
Where in the world is Auckland? According to a top American news channel, it’s in Australia. CNN has come under fire for a New Year’s news story in which it showed video footage of the Auckland Sky Tower’s annual fireworks display; with the caption: “Auckland, Australia”. The footage quickly began trending on social networking sites including Twitter, with many disgruntled Kiwis criticising the news channel and calling for its staff to get some geography lessons. One man wrote: “Breaking news! CNN has moved Auckland to Australia for 2014!” Another person posted: “Auckland, Australia? Thanks, CNN, but no thanks.” That wasn’t the only big blunder to fall on the City of Sails yesterday, with a British newspaper referring to Auckland as the capital of New Zealand.
More prisoners New Zealand’s prison population continues to grow despite record-low crime rates and an ambitious Government strategy to cut reoffending. The number of prisoners has grown steadily over the past 15 years at a rate well above New Zealand’s population growth. Figures obtained under the Official Information Act show the National-led Government has slowed that trend, but the rate of imprisonment remains stubborn. After a rare dip in the prison population in 2011/12, the total number of inmates rose again in the year to June 2013. Prison reformers said reducing the number of New Zealanders in jail cells was a hugely important goal because incarceration was expensive, often did not work as a deterrent, and could be particularly harmful for young people. - APNZ
No clue to identity Forensic experts will try to identify the body of a man found on a walking track in the Coromandel as public appeals fail to shed any light. The man was however wearing a wedding ring, so was likely to have family concerned for him, police say. Believed to be aged in his mid 30s to 40s, the man was found by a group of walkers about midday yesterday in the Puketui Valley near Tairua. The body was flown to Waikato Hospital. A fingerprints expert is currently examining the man and police can also access the services of a forensic dentist to aid identification. - APNZ

NEWSMAKERS OF 2013 As 2014 gets under way, the Guardian is taking a look back at the year that’s been and catching up with some of Mid Canterbury’s newsmakers. Reporter Sue Newman talks with Daniel Newton and Bianca MacDonald.
Rebuilding after the fire W
hen the clock ticked over the final minutes of 2013, Daniel Newton and Bianca MacDonald were hoping the new year would be accompanied by plenty of good luck. The Ashburton couple made headlines in September when they were the victims of a house fire that left them homeless and with virtually all their possessions destroyed. They faced a bleak future but through the shock and the loss they were still smiling because they and their 16-month-old daughter Shelby had escaped the blaze unharmed. Several months later, Daniel says life is starting to look up. They have both found jobs, they’ve moved into a new flat and they’re looking ahead to a new year with renewed optimism. “Life is slowly starting to settle down. We’re getting there, we’re replacing a lot of things and it’s all coming together. This year will be a fresh start for us,” Daniel said. At the time of the fire, Daniel was at home, Bianca at polytechnic and their daughter was at pre-school. For Bianca particularly, the fire was a bitter blow, it was the third home she’d lost in three years. The first and second were in the Christchurch earthquakes. Post-fire the family moved in with Daniel’s sister, sleeping on a couch and while that was a better option than sleeping on the street, two families in one house was pretty crowded, he said. The family then moved into a caravan on the section beside their burned out home. “We couldn’t have done this without our family and being able to live with

them for a while. I know Bianca found living in the caravan hard and they moved in with her mum for a while, but I looked at it as a bit like being on holiday,” Daniel said. Two months ago they moved into their new flat, they’re both working
and they’re now adjusting to a new kind of normal. Looking back, it was pretty tough at times with virtually everything they owned destroyed in the fire. “We were trying to hold it together but it wasn’t always easy.
“We just had to keep looking at it positively, it was the only way to cope really,” he said. Coping was a made a lot easier by the generosity of people who donated household items to help the family start again.

Measles cases linked to hip hop contest across Tasman A medical officer of health says the number of people infected with measles could grow, with 10 people in Auckland and Bay of Plenty already confirmed to have the disease. The 10 cases, which include one person in Auckland and nine

Looking for somewhere to take the kids these summer holidays? Try Peel Forest, which has something for everyone, as Michelle Nelson finds.
A
n easy 40-minute drive south from Ashburton lies the picturesque hamlet of Peel Forest. The area is seeped in Maori and European history. Ngai Tahu call Mount Peel Tarahaoa and Little Mt Peel, Huatakerekere. Legend has it that Chief Tarahaoa and his wife Hua-te-kerekere settled in the area after their canoe was washed up at Shag Point on a northbound journey from South Otago. On their deaths they were turned into mountains, and at some point their grandchildren became the adjoining Four Peaks ranges. Charles Torlesse is understood to have been the first white man to explore the area, searching for coal seams. He named the bush Gurdon; however it was changed to Peel Forest to commemorate a British prime minister by the name of Peel. But it was timber rather than coal that drew the first European settlers to the distinct. For the last half of the 1800s pitsaws churned out Kahikatea and Totara – to meet the demands of the emerging colony. By the early 1900s it became more cost effective to import wood from Australia and the timber industry crashed. Visitors can still see the remains
of several sawpits in the bush today. In 1909, 94 hectares of Crown land was designated as a scenic reserve, gradually more land was incorporated and today the 773 hectare remnant of podocarp forest offers visitors a peek into a time before human habitation, when the Canterbury plains were covered in similar vegetation. The forest incorporates a wide range of vegetation, from towering virgin podocarp stands – some trees thought to be about 1000 years old, to exposed herb-field communities. Thirty-six per cent of all New Zealand ferns can be found in Peel Forest Park, and at this time of the year, an array of flowering shrubs are on display. Native birds offer a continuous chorus for bushwalkers – wood pigeons/kereru, bellbird/korimako, fantail/ pïwakawaka, rifleman/titipounamu, grey warbler/riroriro, silvereye/tauhou and tomtit/ miromiro are the most common residents, but tui, kaka and kakariki have also been spotted. The length of tracks in the park varies – from a stroll around Dennistoun Bush to a day tramp up Little Mt Peel/ Hautakerekere – but all are signposted and well marked. between December and June, and Rangitata Rafts operate just up the road, for those who want a white water adventure. Refreshments are available at the quaint general store in the Peel Forest village, and there a plenty of picnic spots throughout the park.

Christchurch’s first-born baby of 2014 has Mid Canterbury roots. Ruby Parnham was welcomed to the world by parents Rebecca and Gareth, and big sister Mae, at 12.17am on New Year’s Day, at Christchurch Women’s Hospital. Although the family now lives in Christchurch, both Rebecca and Gareth hail from Mt Somers, with both sets of grandparents – Peter and Rhonda Reveley and Anne and Wayne Parnham - still living in the area. Ruby, who is named after her great grandmother Ruby Parnham, wasn’t due until today, but decided she wanted to make an early appearance and push for the title of the country’s first baby of 2014. She narrowly missed out though, with a baby called Mary being born in Auckland at 12.01am. Rebecca was just glad she held out until the new year. “I actually really wanted her to be a 2014 baby, and she’s not actually due until (today),” she said. While Ruby’s birthday may be close enough to Christmas for people to think they can get away with combining birthday and Christmas presents, Rebecca can see fun birthdays ahead when she’s a bit older. “When she’s older most of her friends will want to join her for a party, so she’ll be right.” Rebecca went into labour at about 3.30pm on Tuesday and phoned Gareth, who is a landscaper and was working at a playcentre just around the corner. He downed tools and came home, while Rebecca phoned her parents to get them to head up to look after Mae. After Mae was in bed, the couple headed to Christchurch Women’s at about 9pm. Ruby was born naturally in a much smoother entry to the world than her sister’s. With Mae, Rebecca was in labour for four days and ended up having to have a caesarean. “It was really nice to have a natural birth this time around,” she said. Ruby was the first baby born in the area, that the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) was aware of. And with two days now gone in 2014, Ashburton Hospital’s maternity centre is yet to welcome its first baby of the year.

Ashburton scouts busy Ashburton scouts are soaking up the fun at the 20th national scout jamboree, Experience It All, at Feilding. After driving, flying and travelling by bus, 34 scouts and 12 leaders from the Mania-O-Roto Scout Troop joined 3500 scouts and 1000 leaders to experience the ultimate in scouting at the jamboree. Getting muddy at boot-camp, river rafting, scuba diving, cooking and planting trees as part of a community service project are some of the exciting activities that have kept the scouts busy 12 hours a day. In addition to activities, jamboree is also about making friends with other scouts from other regions and countries and the Ashburton troop has been actively badge trading. Each troop has a unique badge and scouts come armed with a badge stash for trading. Mania-O-Roto’s badge features Mt Hutt, the Rangitata and Rakaia rivers and the grain and sheep farming that made up the region’s history. The jamboree runs until January 5. In 2016-17, the 21st NZ Jamboree will be held in Christchurch.

Becoming a parent changes you Erin Bishop

I
t’s true. Becoming a parent changes you. I’ve just successfully completed my first full year of motherhood and it was a year unlike any other. My husband and I welcomed Riley to the world on December 23, 2012. Everyone tells you that life will never be the same once you’ve had children and nothing can prepare you for it. It’s true. Your days (and nights) become controlled by sleep, eat and play time, and it takes twice as long to get ready for something as simple as a trip to town. The one time you finally think you’re going to be on time for something, there’s a dirty nappy that needs changing and all of a sudden you’re running late. Motherhood completely changes your way of thinking. Parenthood also makes you look at the world in a different light. Take the past few days for example - three road crashes have hit the headlines where children (two even younger than our Riley) have been killed or injured. A couple of years ago, news like that would have saddened me, but today it almost makes me cry. Just the thought of a child being taken away from you in the blink of an eye is devastating. I look around our house now and everywhere you look, there’s something that reminds me of Riley. For a parent to walk back into that knowing their child will never play with those toys again is unimaginable. Not everyone’s holiday season has been happy, but fortunately in our house, it has been. A full-on, happy year done and dusted, roll on 2014 – may it be another year full of fun, laughter and firsts.

In brief Sharon deteriorates The medical condition of the comatose former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon sharply deteriorated yesterday, the hospital treating him said. Sharon, 85, has been in a coma since 2006 when a devastating stroke incapacitated him at the height of his political power. Amir Marom, a spokesman for Tel Hashomer hospital, where Sharon has been treated for most of the past eight years, said Sharon’s medical condition has “deteriorated in the past few days.” He refused to elaborate. - AP

UN calls for truce in Sudan Negotiators from South Sudan’s two warring sides have arrived in Ethiopia for peace talks, and a UN official urged both forces to bring the world’s newest country “back from the brink”. Fighting continued in Bor, a gateway city to the capital of Juba, a government official said. Bor is just 120 kilometres from Juba. Bor, the capital of Jonglei state, is the centre of ethnically based violence stemming from the political rivalry between President Salva Kiir and ousted Vice President Riek Machar, the rebel leader accused of mounting a failed coup attempt. Kiir declared a state of emergency in Jonglei and Unity, two states where rebel forces have
gained the upper hand in recent fighting. Machar said he would send his forces from Bor to Juba, but that threat was played down by Hilde Johnson, the UN representative in South Sudan. “I think we need to take quotations with pinches of salt at this point of time,” Johnson said. “On January 1, the country is at a fork in the road, but it can still be saved from further major escalation of violence,” she said. Johnson urged Kiir and Machar to use the new talks to move toward peace, adding: “They can still pull the country back from the brink.” The fighting has killed more than 1000 people, the UN says.
Pro-Machar forces in Bor appear to be taking defensive positions, Johnson said. The fighting in Bor has displaced about 60,000 people, making it the latest humanitarian crisis in South Sudan. The international Red Cross said the road from Bor to the nearby Awerial area was lined with people waiting for boats so they could cross the Nile River. “There are tens of thousands of people here who literally picked up their kids and a few belongings and fled to the first safe place they could get to, which is Awerial,” said David Nash, head of mission for Doctors Without Border. “They are camped out under trees with no sanitation and no safe drinking water.”
Two teams of five negotiators each arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and were expected to begin talks later, said Getachew Reda, a spokesman for Ethiopia’s prime minister. The UN is “gravely concerned” about mounting evidence of gross violations of international human rights law, including the extra-judicial killings of civilians and captured soldiers, it said. The UN’s estimate of 1000 dead was given days ago and the number of fatalities is believed to be higher as a result of the new fighting around the country, including in Bor. South Sudan Foreign Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin labelled Bor a war zone. - AP

Chinese cook crashes on balloon to disputed isles A Chinese cook who crashed into the sea while trying to fly on a hot-air balloon to islands claimed by both China and Japan has been rescued by Japan’s Coast Guard. Xu Shuaijun, 35, crashed yesterday after hitting turbulence as he approached the islands, known in Japan as Senkaku and Diayou in China, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard received a missing-person report from Taiwanese officials, and a Coast Guard helicopter spotted Xu about 20 kilometres from the islands, they said. He was picked up by a boat
and later handed over to a Chinese patrol ship, according to the Coast Guard. His life was not in danger, although other details were not available. The islands have been a sore point in bilateral relations for years, and nationalists from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong have occasionally tried to sail to them. A recent visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to a Tokyo shrine that honours World War Two war criminals has outraged China, adding to the bilateral tensions. - AP
A senior Chinese provincial official has been fired and expelled from the Communist Party for negligence in a massive votebuying scandal, the party’s internal anti-graft arm said yesterday. The party’s discipline commission said that Tong Mingqian failed to take “timely and effective measures” in the central city of Hengyang to address reports of bribery in the city legislature’s selection of provincial representatives. The scandal “inflicts great losses to the interests of the party, country and the people, and leaves a harmful political and social impact,” the commission said in an announcement on its website. It said Tong’s case had been handed over to judicial authorities. -AP
NY swears in mayor Bill de Blasio has been sworn in as the 109th mayor of New York City, becoming the first Democrat to occupy City Hall in nearly two decades while vowing to pursue a sweeping liberal agenda for the largest US city. Former first lady Barbara Bush remains hospitalised with a respiratory-related issue, but her condition hasn’t changed, a spokesman for her husband’s office said yesterday. Bush, 88, was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Monday, though it wasn’t announced until former President George H.W. Bush’s office released a statement later. “She is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care,” it read. - AP

QUICK MEAL
Spaghetti with crisp salami, sundried tomato 360g homebrand spaghetti 3 Tbsp olive oil 100g salami 250g sundried tomatoes 100g baby spinach leaves 100g feta juice and zest of 1 lemon ■ Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil, add salt and cook the spaghetti until tender. Drain. ■ Place the salami in a hot, dry, large frying pan for 4-5 minutes turning once until crisp or place a single layer of salami between two pieces of kitchen paper and microwave on high for about 1½ minutes until crisp. ■ Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan, add sundried tomatoes and cook, stirring for 1 minute until heated through. ■ Add the cooked spaghetti, lemon juice and zest, spinach leaves, salt and pepper to taste and toss over the heat for 1 minute.

Facebook oldies drive teens away
A
study of how older teenagers use social media has found that Facebook is “not just on the slide, it is basically dead and buried”, an expert says. He claims it is being replaced by simpler social networks such as Twitter and Snapchat. Young people now see the site as “uncool” and keep their profiles live purely to stay in touch with older relatives, among whom it remains popular. University College London professor Daniel Miller, an anthropologist who worked on the European Union-funded research, wrote an article for the academic news website The Conversation. “Mostly they feel embarrassed even to be associated with it,” he said. “This year marked the start of what looks likely to be a sustained decline of what had been the most pervasive of social networking sites. “Young people are turning away in their droves and adopting other social networks instead, while the worst people of all, their parents, continue to use the service. “Where once parents worried about their children joining Facebook, the children now say it is their family that insists they stay there to post about their lives. “Parents have worked out how to use the site and see it as a way for the family to remain connected. “In response, the young are moving on to cooler things. “What appears to be the most seminal moment in a young person’s decision to leave Facebook was surely that dreaded day your mum sends you a friend request.” The study observed people aged 16 to 18 in eight countries for 15 months and found that Facebook use was in sharp de-

Young people were turning to simpler services such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp, which Miller conceded were “no match” for Facebook in functionality. “Most of the schoolchildren in our survey recognised that in many ways, Facebook is technically better than Twitter or Instagram,” he said. But “slick isn’t always best” in
attracting young users. WhatsApp has overtaken Facebook as the number one way to send messages, said the researchers. Snapchat has gained in popularity in recent months by allowing users to send images which “self-destruct” after a short period on the recipient’s phone to maintain privacy. Snapchat claims it handles 350 million images every day, and it
reportedly turned down a US$3 billion ($3.7b) acquisition offer from Facebook. Researchers found close friends used Snapchat to communicate, WhatsApp was used with acquaintances and Twitter broadcast to anyone who chose to follow that person. The study found teenagers now used Facebook as a way to stay in touch with older members of their family and siblings
who have left for university and had “evolved into a very different animal” from its early days as a social network focusing on young users at university. Facebook, which will be 10 years old next year, is offering 70 million shares for sale at US$55.05 ($67.55) a share. Ivanovic to play doubles partner Ana Ivanovic will play doubles partner Kirsten Flipkens in today’s semi-finals at the ASB Classic after the pair came through their quarter-finals in straight sets. Ivanovic, the third seed, beat Kurumi Nara of Japan 6-2 6-3 in 76 minutes. She was made to work harder than in her second-round match, when she romped past Johanna Larsson 6-1 6-1, but after a few early wobbles found her range to control the contest. Her forehand, in particular, was working well and she rattled off a number of driving winners. Ivanovic will take on good friend Flipkens in the semi-finals after the Belgian beat qualifier Sachie Ishizu 6-4 7-5 in the day’s opening quarter-final.
It was the third seed’s third straight sets victory of the tournament but she looked in trouble when trailing 5-2 in the second set. She then broke Ishizu twice to take the set and match in one hour 24 minutes. Ivanovic admits she’s an emotional person. It’s mirrored by her new coach, Namanja Kontic, who can be seen pumping his fists or whacking his hat against his knee during her matches. It’s a relationship that started after last year’s Wimbledon and it’s the first time since her junior years Ivanovic has had a Serbian coach. The 26-year-old describes herself as “strongwilled, sensitive, determined and extremely competitive” which are common traits among Balkans.

Phoenix make it a winning treble BY DANIEL RICHARDSON The Ernie Merrick era at the Wellington Phoenix is officially in full swing after his side won their third A-League game on the bounce with a 3-1 victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers in Parramatta on Wednesday night. Wellington, playing their fourth game in 14 days, were resolute in defence and although, at times, they missed the creativity of Carlos Hernandez in attack, who is sidelined for up to six weeks with a fractured wrist, they never wilted under pressure. After winning their past two games 1-0, it was courtesy of second-half goals to Tyler Boyd and Stein Huysegems that gave the Phoenix the edge over the second-placed Wanderers, who were heavy favourites coming in to the match. The first spell was a stalemate as neither side could find an early goal. Chances were rare and Wanderers marquee man Shinji Ono had the best opportunity of the game but his header hit the crossbar late in the first spell. Coach Merrick went to his bench at halftime and inserted young gun Matthew Ridenton in to the contest at the expense of Jason Hicks, who had enjoyed an in-
dustrious opening 45 minutes. It marked the 17-year-old Ridenton’s second appearance for the Phoenix after he joined the club on a three-year deal in October and he looked sharp during his time on the field. The deadlock was finally broken in the 62nd minute when Ono delivered a deft touch for Mark Bridge to latch on to and he finished smartly to give the home side the lead. But their advantage was shortlived as substitute Boyd got his first A-League goal only six minutes later as he prodded home a Huysegems cross as the Phoenix levelled things at 1-1. Then it was down to Huysegems, who added a brace within six minutes as Wellington secured an unlikely victory, which marked a notable turnaround after they began the season without a win from their opening 10 games. Merrick was given another i n j u r y - r e l at ed headache
from the game though, when right back Louis Fenton left the field late in the first half after he took another nasty fall on to his troublesome right shoulder. Fenton dislocated the shoulder in the pre-season and popped it out during last week’s 1-0 win over the Melbourne Heart but it was put straight back in and he was deemed fit to meet the Wanderers. But when he left the pitch in the 40th minute he looked in severe pain and Merrick will now need to find a new right back as Fenton joined Paul Ifill (ruptured Achilles tendon) and Hernandez in the doctor’s office. Ifill is cooked for the entire season and Hernandez is out for more than a month, which will put extra pressure on Merrick’s squad and he may be forced to dip in to the transfer market this month. Fringe All White Michael Boxall, who is usually more comfortable in the centre of defence, came off the bench to replace Fenton and produced a solid shift at right back. The Phoenix still sit a couple of wins outside of the top six but the wheels are in motion for a mid-season charge that could push them towards the playoffs. Moyes ‘furious’ with referee BY IAN WHITTELL David Moyes has labelled a controversial decision by World Cup final referee Howard Webb as “scandalous” in the wake of his team’s 2-1 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur. The Manchester United manager was incensed by a late decision not to award United a penalty kick when Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris challenged home winger Ashley Young and questioned whether England’s most respected official should be operating in the Premier League. Despite television pundits
widely backing Webb’s decision not to give United the penalty, an award that would surely also have led to the goalkeeper’s dismissal, Moyes was adamant that the 42-year-old Yorkshireman should be dealt with by the PGMO, the body who appoint match officials. “It was a scandal,” fumed Moyes. “It’s reckless, it’s late, it’s in the penalty box, I don’t know what else you can say. “If you follow through on a player anywhere else on the pitch, foot-high, it’s a sending off and a penalty kick. “It’s an incredible decision that didn’t go our way. “It’s one of the worst I’ve seen.” The United manager’s angry mood was not helped at all by Webb showing a yellow card to United youngster Adnan Januzaj for “simulation” in the second half. Sandra Keith (right) and partner Serena Matthews have progressed to the final eight of the women’s pairs at the national bowls championships in Dunedin. In post-section play in the women’s pairs, four time national champion Keith and Matthews beat Victoria/United’s Leigh and Kirsten Griffin in the third round, needing to win their last match against Paritu-
tu’s Heather Johns and Valerie Keightley to secure a spot in the last eight. They did just that, winning 19-7. Earlier in the tournament Keith missed out on a spot in the last eight in the women’s singles. That final will be played on Saturday morning between Tayla Bruce from Burnside and Victoria’s Helen King. Meanwhile, the pair of Allenton’s Sandra Holdom and Meth-
ven’s Melva Middleton qualified for post-section play in the women’s pairs, but lost in the first round to Elmwood’s Pam Phair and Theresa Woodham. In the men’s singles, Methven’s Simon Fleetwood made it through to post-section play but lost at that stage to Clutha Valley’s Robert Wilson. Another Methven player, Craig Carter, was also ousted in post section play, losing to Johnsonville’s Brendon Johnson.
None of the Mid Canterbury combinations in the men’s pairs made it through to the finals. The national fours championships get under way on Sunday with the men’s draw featuring a four from Hinds, and the women’s draw featuring Keith in an all-Dunsandel team with Matthews and two other players, along with a Mid Canterbury composite team featuring players from Ashburton, Rakaia and Methven.
