Suspicions a fire which destroyed a Housing New Zealand dwelling on Allens Road this week may have been deliberately lit have been extinguished. Following an extensive scene examination yesterday, Ashburton police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding its origins. The examination was undertaken by Geraldine-based fire risk management officer Craig Chambers in conjunction with Ashburton police. Emergency services were alerted to the fire at about 4.45pm on Wednesday.
Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade appliances arrived at the scene to find the front of a semi-detached flat engulfed in flames, deputy chief fire officer Graeme Baker said. Up to 30 firefighters were involved in battling the blaze which had taken hold in the ceiling and was threatening the adjourning unit. By 5.45pm the fire was under control, however, firefighters remained at the property until about 8pm to ensure it did not flare up again. Police also maintained a strong presence at the scene. A Housing New Zealand spokesperson said staff were working closely with the
two affected tenants to investigate alternative housing options, along with the fire service to discover the cause of the fire. “We are pleased no-one was hurt in the fire,” an HNZ spokesperson said. “An occupant at the property at time has confirmed to us the fitted smoke alarms alerted him to the fire which he was then able to exit the property quickly and safely.” The agency installs smoke alarms in all its properties and these are checked annually. No decision has yet been made on the future of the property but the site remains secured for safety reasons.
