Motorist slams into dairy cow ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
P13
When someone comes knocking on your door at 3.30am on a Saturday morning, it’s generally not going to be good news. For Todd Halliday, the person behind the knock was a fellow farmer telling him that his cows were on the road and a car had driven into them. Mr Halliday – the equity manager on the Hinds dairy farm – was immediately confused as to how his cows had escaped on to Isleworth Road and worried for the driver who had hit them. Fortunately the driver was all right, as was the hit cow once he gave it some antibiotics, but it wasn’t until daybreak that Mr Halliday discovered why his cows were on the road.
“When the sun came up it was pretty apparent the wires had been cut and a roadside gate, which was always shut, was open,” he said. The incident was reported to police and the theory was that someone had been in the process of stealing cows, when they were interrupted. Mr Halliday said he was aware of the recent spate of stock thefts around the district. “With what’s been happening in the area, it’s just too much of a coincidence,” he said. About 30 cows, from a herd of 400, were on the road and rounded up quickly. “It was just lucky nothing happened to the driver of the car. That would have been tragic.” Mr Halliday was milking later that
morning and did a stocktake, with all cows accounted for, which he was grateful for. Times are hard enough for dairy farmers at the moment, without someone taking stock, he said. Mr Halliday has since been out and bought padlocks for their roadside gates. He is urging others to do the same and be vigilant. If anyone saw anything suspicious in the vicinity of Isleworth Road – about 4km from Hinds – in the early hours of Saturday morning, or witnessed any suspicious activity in rural areas, they’re asked to contact police.
