A police officer and members of the public were injured – and at least three people arrested after violent clashes – in Ashburton’s CBD on Saturday night. According to a police spokeswoman, police responded to reports of groups of people fighting on East Street on Saturday night and early on Sunday morning. No information about the incident was released on Sunday, but in an emailed statement to media last night police confirmed an officer had been injured in the disorder.

Police were unable to say how many people were involved in the incident or where on East Street it happened. They could not say how many police officers attended the incident. Ashburton police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said a constable was hit while attempting to stop an assault. The alleged offender then fled. “The constable’s colleagues pursued the offender on foot but were unable to locate him,” Mr Banfield said. Several members of the public caught up in the incident also required treatment for minor injuries, she said.
