Bundle of joy helps out Plunket

Every month, around 30,000 people pass through the doors of Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre, says its manager Steve Prescott.

And while that patronage has exceeded all expectations, it’s also created a few problems with several areas of the complex at maximum capacity several times each day, he said.

“The complex is incredibly well used and our numbers on a national level are at the high end of participation.”

Gym membership was now at 1100 and while growth had slowed from the early months the centre opened, it was still growing, Prescott said.

Special matting is now regularly rolled out in the court area to provide additional space for fitness classes but Prescott was faced with finding a solution to creating more space in the gym area.

While the ultimate solution was to extend both the gym and court areas, that was a major project and a short term fix had to be found, he said.

The alternative was to buy an outdoor gym system and this has now been set up in an area accessed from the main gym.

The equipment and security fencing that came with a price tag of $9000 was funded by the

Russell Ellis Stadium Trust. When he told councillors at Thursday’s Ashburton District council service delivery meeting that the trust had paid for the gym equipment, Russell Ellis was not happy.

He said it was his understanding that the trust was charged with raising money from ratepayers to build the centre, not to hand that money out for one-off projects.

“That didn’t give them licence to do this. They’ve spent ratepayers’ money on equipment that’s only used by gym members. This money should have been used to pay down debt,” Ellis said.

The new equipment has been installed and is now in use.

Tetiana Lebiedieva of Ashburton is keeping the world up to date on her daughter’s progress as part of Plunket’s Raise a Bundle fundraising campaign.

Three-month-old Olivia is one of about half a dozen babies born throughout New Zealand in late September, when Plunket launched the campaign.

Plunket will be following the progress of the babies over 1000 days, with updates on its Facebook page.

Lebiedieva was among the mums who volunteered to join, and she said she felt privileged to be able to help out such a good cause.

She had used the Plunket line for her first child Brian, who was now a preschooler, and also appreciated services run by the organisation in Ashburton.

In a recent update on the Plunket page she reported the biggest happiness to her and husband Artem was seeing Olivia smiling.

“There’s nothing more precious than that,” she said.

And Olivia’s feeding routine had become easier, and she was waking only once in the night.

Plunket nurse Paula Hyde weighed Olivia at her three-month visit, and she was 4.94 kilograms, having progressed well from the 2.69 kilograms she was at birth.

So far Raise a Bundle has raised $12,770, and it is hoped it will help towards the $4 million Plunket needs each year.

The organisation provides postnatal support programmes, injury prevention activities, parenting education classes, toy libraries, playgroups and early childhood services.

Reduced funding hits home

Over the past six years New Zealand pre-schools have felt the strain of a reduction in the funding per child and Ashburton is no different.

In recent figures released by the Ministry of Education (MoE) funding for every pre-school child has decreased by $500 since the 2009-10 period.

The Government’s expenditure

on early childhood education per funded child hour and per fulltime equivalent has decreased from $10,000 in 2009/10 to $9470 in 2014/15.

Labour candidate for Rangitata and owner of the Hinds Headstart Early Learning Centre Jo Luxton said she has certainly felt the weight of the reduced spending.

The change of the funding system by the MoE has had a huge impact on her learning centre

with the level of funding they receive reduced by $40,000 per year.

“This has a huge impact on our centre, we still need to employ qualified teachers, and pay them appropriately, with less income.”

Luxton said it impacts the level of teaching children receive because the early childhood centres must either reduce the number of qualified teachers or replace them with unqualified staff.

“Early childhood education

lays the foundation for learning for children and can hugely impact on their progress going forward into primary school.

“Proper investment in education is essential,” she said.

NZEI Te Riu Roa Early Childhood Education spokesperson Virginia Oakley said, in a media release, the slow erosion of funding was having a detrimental impact on the quality of education centres provide.

“The figures show that the Government’s claim of greater spending in early childhood education is an empty boast, because the increases are not keeping up with the number of children participating.

“The squeeze on centres has become apparent, with fewer qualified teachers being employed, worsening child-to-teacher ratios and delays in maintenance and updating of resources.”

Three weeks of stress come to end

Students throughout Ashburton dropped their pens and leapt out the school doors yesterday for the end of the NCEA exams.

The New Zealand Certificate of Educational Achievement exams came to a close with more than 6000 standards having been sat in Ashburton schools.

Level one at history, level two drama and level three social studies were the final exams to be completed by New Zealand students which marked the end of the stress-filled, three weeks students endure.

Ashburton College Dux Katie Hill was the last to finish in the level three Drama exam yesterday morning and is relieved the assess-

ments are finally over.

Ashburton College principal’s nominee Mary Buckland said the students will find out their test results in January or early February through their NZQA online account.

Some students are so nervous about how well they have done they get their parents to check for them, she said.

There’s one message the Ashburton community lunch team want to shout out in the lead up to Christmas – don’t be alone on Christmas Day, come and join our large community family.

Preparations for this year’s lunch are well under way and leader of the organising team Ann Allott says the only unknown quantity now is how many guests will be dining.

The lunch now runs to a well tried and tested formula, with volunteers and guests sharing a meal that is about fellowship and ensuring everyone involved has a special time, Allott said.

The faces around the dinner tables might change from year to year, but the one constant is the spirit of the event, she said.

Critical to the success of each community lunch is a strong team of volunteers who help serve and clean up the festive meal that again this year will be cooked by

“We’re still looking for volunteers and while we have food donations we still need more.”

The menu combines the best of Christmas – turkey, lamb and ham with a range of vegetables followed by Christmas pudding and custard, icecream, fruit salad and cream.

While it’s preferable that people pre-book if they plan to attend, no one would be turned away if they arrived on the day, Allott said.

“Everyone is welcome, we don’t want to think people are spending Christmas lunch alone. Join us and share Christmas with a big family.”

Father Christmas will arrive during lunch and guests will be given sweets to take home.

This year’s community Christmas lunch will be held in the Sinclair Centre in Park Street, starting at 12.30pm.

‘Breakfast better than booze’

Employers are being urged to shift the focus away from alcohol at their end of year functions.

The Community Alcohol Action Plan (CAAP) group is promoting the Big Breakfast Shout as an alternative to workplace drinks to try and cut down on road accidents involving alcohol.

The initiative was launched on Thursday morning outside VetEnt in front of mayor Donna Favell, councillors, local businesses and police.

CAAP’s aim is to reduce alcohol harm in Ashburton. The group includes Deborah Hay, Alcohol Health Promoter and Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drugs Service (Acads).

This year the group is focusing on promoting the Big Breakfast Shout which they believe is an alternative way to reward staff at the end of the year and at the same time lowers alcohol related risks.

“Road safety in our community is vital and we want people to really think about how they and their families are getting home this holiday season,” Chris Clark, Acads CEO, said.

Deborah Hay said it is important to take alcohol impairment seriously, as it was a factor in 14

Ashburton’s summer hot spot, the Tinwald Domain pool, opens for business today. Each year the pool attracts thousands of visitors and it’s ready to cater for big numbers again this year, says Ashburton District Council sports facilities manager Steve Prescott.

A new outdoor shower has been installed over the winter and the pool and its surrounds are in tiptop order, he said. “We had a great season last year with really good numbers through; on hot days people swarmed there. A lot of people enjoy having the outdoor pool as an option.” Thanks to solar heating panels and heat pumps the water temperature is maintained at between 27 and 28 degrees.

Weekend and school holiday opening hours are noon to 7pm while during the school term the pool is open from 4pm to 7pm.

One tramper dies in fall, another airlifted out One tramper died near Arthur’s Pass and another was airlifted out to Franz Josef Glacier yesterday morning after spending a night seriously injured, as a result of two separate backcountry accidents.

A Christchurch man died on Thursday afternoon after falling on Mount Harper. His companion set off a beacon to summon help from the head of the Waimakariri River about 4.30pm when the man did not return from a day trip climbing Mount Harper, next to the highest peak in the Arthur’s Pass National Park.

Pool opens today

A rescue helicopter was sent to the location, where rescuers spoke to the victim’s tramping companion and then flew around the area. Crew members observed what they thought was a body, but due to the location were unable to reach it.

It appeared the victim had fallen a considerable distance.

His companion was flown back to Arthur’s Pass village and was safe and well.

Constable Philip Simmonds, of Arthur’s Pass, said until the body had been retrieved, identified and

next of kin informed, they would not be releasing any identifying information.

Yesterday, the NZCC Rescue Helicopter was sent up to recover the body, but while waiting for the cloud to clear it was diverted to another tramping accident behind Franz Josef.

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre said the patient was part of a group of four. It was not immediately clear where they were from but the man had numerous broken bones after falling on Mount Elie de Beaumont. Due to condi-

tions, the helicopter could not reach him on Thursday evening.

A team from DOC’s Mount Cook Alpine Cliff Rescue reached the accident site yesterday morning, stabilised the victim and brought him out on a Helicopter Line machine.

Senior sergeant Antony Callon said the man had fallen off an alpine glacier.

“The man fell a considerable distance and will be transferred to Christchurch Hospital for medical treatment,” Mr Callon said.

Business is changing at Ashburton’s public library. While books have been its stock in trade for decades, the installation of a bank of computers saw a surge of new customers attracted by the option of free access to the internet. But even this business has changed, says library manager Jill Watson. “Internet use has now plateaued but we’re getting more people who’re coming in to print things and to apply for jobs online.

We’re also seeing a lot of people who are doing immigration related work,” she said. As library use has changed, membership continues to grow, but book issue numbers are slowly declining.

Guilty plea to stabbing A convicted killer yesterday admitted stabbing a fellow prisoner with a home-made shank in a “frenzied attack”. Terry Jason Nahi is serving a life sentence for the murder of 21-year-old Christchurch woman Lisa Caroline Hurrell in 1998. Yesterday at Christchurch District Court, Nahi pleaded guilty to a brutal prison assault at Christchurch Men’s Prison on May 4 this year. Nahi, 42, armed himself with a shank and walked into an inmate’s cell in the Rawhiti 2 wing about 8.15am, the Crown summary of facts says. Nahi attacked the victim before the melee spilled into the corridor of the ground floor wing. Nahi will be sentenced on February 17.

Mt Somers faces toilet dilemma

It began as a simple enough job, building a new toilet on McClimont Green in Mt Somers but locals say that as visitor numbers increase, one toilet is not enough to do the job.

As part of an extension to the Mt Somers fire shed the council planned to build a new disabled access toilet that could be used by both visitors to the green and by people using the fire service building. Along with a facility in the village’s domain this would have meant there were three public toilets.

If Mt Somers wanted more toilets on the green, then the council didn’t have the budget to build the extra facility that would require a change from holding tanks to a septic tank, as well as upgrading the domain facilities.

Something would have to go and that could be the domain toilets, council open spaces

manager David Askin said.

He agreed that the district’s public toilets had high levels of use. Door counters indicated that the Hinds facilities received 325 visitors per day on average and Ashburton’s East Street facilities 636 per day.

Those figures made it clear that if an information centre was established at McClimont Green in Mt Somers, a single public toilet would be inadequate and that left the council with a dilemma on its hands.

While the extra facilities on the green could be funded by using money set aside for maintenance on the domain facilities, for the locals it was not a case of closing one to build the other, they wanted facilities in both places, Askin said.

In an effort to find a solution council staff will meet Mt Somers reserve board and citizens association members on Tuesday.

Volunteers given a thank you lunch Coldstream Rest Home’s loyal volunteers were treated to lunch this week.

The group of around 30 people from across Ashburton gathered in the home to be fed as a thank you for all their work.

Bernice Laird, activities co-ordinator at Coldstream said their volunteers give up their time every month to keep the residents entertained.

The group, comprised mostly of musicians, were fed a Christmas barbecue, usually cooked outside in the garden however, due to the weather the meal had to be cooked inside.

Laird said other volunteers included one woman who did makeup and pampered residents and individuals who came in and helped with the social events like happy hour.

“I value the volunteers because it’s really hard to keep people on a monthly system,” she said.

Christmas at Sinclair Centre Around 80 people gathered earlier this week at the Sinclair Centre to celebrate an early Christmas.

The annual interhome Christmas party saw members from seven resthomes come together.

Residents from Coldstream House, Rosebank, Radius Millstream, Princes Court, Terrace View, Park Street Day Care and Tuarangi Home listened to the MSA Band perform and enjoyed afternoon tea together.

The food was provided by each individual resthome for their residents.

Father Christmas was also present and made time to go around the room and speak to as many residents as he could.

Bomb threats came from overseas Police have confirmed the bomb threats received by several New Zealand schools yesterday came from overseas.

New Zealand officers worked with international partners to investigate the origin of the calls.

Schools around the country went into lockdown yesterday after they received calls and voice messages that said bombs were planted at the schools.

Yesterday, police said their investigations had not established any actual threat to the schools.

It was up to schools’ management to decide how to respond to bomb threats, police said.

Staff would make decisions based on the individual circumstance and available information.

Police said ensuring students and teachers remained safe at schools was their top priority and officers would continue to

work with schools and the Ministry of Education to respond to the threats.

In February, at least six New Zealand schools were evacuated after receiving recorded messages saying bombs had been planted on campuses.

Local police swept the grounds, but failed to find any evidence of explosive devices.

After further investigation, police said February’s scare may have been part of an ongoing international hoax.

Superintendent Chris Scahill said police were aware of similar incidents at schools in the US, the UK and Australia.

Thursday’s threatening prerecorded message was phoned in to schools in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Gisborne, Palmerston North, Masterton and Christchurch.

Parents rushed to to pick up their kids from the affected schools after they learnt of the threats.

Stand against violence Ashburton Zonta members have put their weight behind the annual violence against women campaign.

To show their commitment to the cause, they recently turned the Ashburton clocktower orange and are planning an event they hope will gain strong community support.

Club members want the public to join them on the final day of this year’s campaign, December 10, when they will walk from the Ashburton River bridge to the West Street market. The marchers will carry distinctive orange dolls.

The march starts at 10.30am and will wrap up with lots of orange balloons being released into the sky.

Each year Zonta Club members support the say “No” to violence against women and girls campaign.

What do you do with a bee swarm?

Bee swarms are on the rise and while they might look scary, they’re just looking for somewhere to live.

Jaspur McDonald, a private beekeeper based in Geraldine, said during this time of year bees will swarm and search for a new place to live.

He said the swarms are bees naturally spreading and occurs when a hive gets to a certain size and a new queen is produced and the old queen leaves with half of the workers in the colony.

The bee swarms are usually triggered by warm weather, so this week people can expect to see some bees out and about.

However, McDonald said if the weather changes or the bees don’t find a suitable new home, they can die of cold or from the varroa mite, which kills bees by weaken-

ing their immune system.

The private beekeeper has had his own hive for the past year and said he got into it through family who have also been maintaining hives.

He said if anyone sees a swarm they can give him a call on 027 289 6576 and he will collect the bees in a special box.

He said the box, which is called a nucleus, is specially designed for bees.

While the bees will sometimes just fly into the box themselves, McDonald said he still wears a protective bee suit as handling them can make the bees angry.

He then finds them a new hive or puts them somewhere suitable for bees.

The main thing is just to get in contact with McDonald early, as if people leave it for a couple of hours the bees may have moved on.

Nice pups, cops hotter The post was meant to show off the new puppy recruits. But more women were looking at the two police officers holding the cute animals. A photo of two Southern District police officers has attracted hundreds of likes after it was posted on the district’s Facebook page. Constables Tim Roy and Regan Mauheni are shown holding South and Paikea. One Facebook user wrote “adorable, and the puppies are cute too”, and another wrote “reoooww... hello officer, U can arrest me [sic]”. One woman asked if the officers were single; another said “I’ll take all four thanks”. The photo had more than 340 likes and 110 comments as of 8.30am yesterday.

Hare-raising fire sparked brigade’s beginnings T

he Pendarves Rural Fire Force held a jubilee dinner at the Pendarves Hall on Saturday night to mark 25 years since it was founded.

It all began in 1991 with an unfortunate hare which caught fire in a stubble burn-off and ran into the next paddock and set trees on fire.

It was on the farm of John McManus and the frustrations with controlling that fire led to him and neighbours establishing the unit with the help of the Ashburton District Council.

John has since passed away, but his son Murray remembers well the fire on that hot summer’s day.

The Ashburton brigade took some time to arrive, but between its efforts and those of neighbours’, with shovels and bags, as well as a rotorainer irrigator, the fire was extinguished before it caused major damage.

The hare was not as lucky.

“He was toast,” Mr McManus said.

The council helped fund a TK Bedford fire appliance, which was mainly stored in a former hay shed on the McManus farm. The keys were left in it and farmers could use it when they needed, even having it on site in preparation when burning off.

McManus was among about 80 attending Saturday night’s celebrations and said his father would have been pleased to see the brigade still going strong today.

Pendarves chief fire force controller Paul Stewart agreed and recalled the brigade coming back following waning interest in the late 1990s.

Members had become busy and sometimes when there were callouts firefighters were on their headers and could not attend.

The Ashburton District Council’s rural firefighting department had thought that needed to change and 15 years ago sent a flyer around garnering support for a stronger brigade.

Farmers agreed it was time to turn the unit into a more professional outfit and about 20 attended a meeting.

“Which was quite a good response,” Stewart recalled. And about six of those at the restart meeting remained as members today.

A fire shed was built, opposite the Pendarves hall, with the help of council funding.

He believed the average service for the brigade’s approximate 20 current members was 15 years, with the longest-serving members being Richard McArthur, who has been a member for 22 years, and then Tim Porter, who has belonged for 21 years.

Today the brigade has about 40 callouts per year, to rural and vegetation fires, and also medical callouts and car crashes.

Twenty-five years of firefighting in the Pendarves area was recalled last weekend when the local rural fire force celebrated the quarter century milestone. Susan Sandys reports.

“We have been trained to respond to all that stuff now,” Stewart said.

Among those attending the jubilee was Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel, as well as some councillors, past members of the unit and members of other rural fire force units in Mid Canterbury. All current members were presented with commemorative plaques.

Dubliner fight night KO’d The much anticipated Dubliner Fight Night has been rescheduled for the New Year.

Organisers said due to Joseph Parker’s bout against Andy Ruiz clashing with the fundraiser, they were unable to retain officials needed to gain a permit and hold the event.

Gary Manning, of the Dubliner, said it will be rescheduled for 2017, but the exact date is yet to be finalised.

“Since it was announced on November 10th that the Parker fight would take place in Auckland on the exact same evening, we have endeavoured to book the necessary qualified officials which are required to secure a boxing permit,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we have drawn a blank, it seems much of the New Zealand boxing fraternity is destined for Auckland.”

Manning said to gain a permit

necessary to host a boxing event two referees and three judges are required, along with one co-ordinator and one timekeeper.

“The permit was not a problem as long as we had the officials and the officials were not available,” he said.

Manning said it was simply bad luck because, initially, they had the officials booked.

“We had them all booked since August and at that point the Park-

er fight wasn’t going ahead, then it was and it took the emphasis off our event,” Manning said.

The Dubliner Fight Night was launched in August and was set to include 30 amateur fighters.

Mandy McTigue, who has been preparing to take to the ring next Saturday, said all involved are disappointed by the postponement.

“Those guys have put a lot of hard yards into organising the night and to be shut down one

week ahead of the event is a bit of a shame,” she said.

The proceeds from the event were going to Methven Rugby Club’s lighting upgrades as well as a donation to St John.

Tickets for the event sold out within a couple of hours with 430 fight fans set to attend.

Refunds will be available or existing tickets can be transferable for the rescheduled date, which is yet to be announced.

Black Jacks crash out in semi-finals of world champs A worst possible scenario has played out for the New Zealand Black Jacks at the World Bowls Championships in Christchurch.

The Kiwis have lost all four of their semi-final match-ups to collect a haul of four bronze medals but there is significant disap-

pointment within the team at a great opportunity missed.

The men’s pair of Mike Kernaghan and Shannon McIlroy were totally outplayed by their Irish counterparts Gary Kelly and Ian McClure 17-10.

Skipper targets Hawke Cup

Mid Canterbury will kick off their Hawke Cup campaign against old enemy South Canterbury at the Ashburton Domain Oval today as the crop of 2016 look to emulate the triumphant side of 2004.

Mid Canterbury will be skippered by stalwart Bevan Ravenscroft, who has plenty of confidence in the players at his disposal.

The home side will be hoping

for a similar result as to when the two teams last met when Mid Canterbury hit the right line and lengths to secure a 28-run win and the Ron Biggar Memorial in November.

This year’s ranks will again boast plenty of experience with the likes of Des Kruger, Robbie Polson, Jason Morrison, Richard Print and Ravenscroft returning to the fray.

Ravenscroft insisted on the importance of getting off to a strong

start today, with plenty of challenging fixtures on the horizon next year.

“I’d like to think we’ve had the wood over them (South Canterbury) over the last few years but they’re certainly a good side,” said the 30-year-old.

“It doesn’t get any easier.

“When you’re going down to Oamaru and Invercargill, that’s always really tough.”

Mid Canterbury will be without talisman Print tomorrow due to

prior commitments, but Ravenscroft has faith that his players have the ability and determination to see off South Canterbury and end the 12-year Hawke Cup drought.

“We’ve got a really good squad, I seriously feel we could go all the way – that’s why I’m still playing,” he said.

Australia the number one target

To chase or not to chase

By Andrew Alderson A key question in the ChappellHadlee one-day international series is whether New Zealand can overcome historical difficulties chasing targets during day-night matches in Australia.

In 39 ODIs, New Zealand have batted first 23 times and won nine matches for a 39 per cent winning record across the Tasman.

That drops to 25 per cent, with four wins from 16 matches, batting second.

It helps to win the toss and bat.

Theories abound as to why hunting proves more difficult than setting.

Scoreboard pressure, early evening swing, crowd intimidation and heat exhaustion are among the hypotheses.

Former Black Caps ODI representatives Jacob Oram and Grant Elliott have the best New Zealand averages in the second innings for anyone playing three or more innings away against Australia.

They are two of the four New Zealanders – in addition to Bruce Edgar and Stephen Fleming – to make ODI centuries chasing against their trans-Tasman hosts.

Fleming, with 116 not out chasing 252 at Melbourne in January 1998, is the only New Zealander to do so in a winning effort.

Elliott is now considered a bona fide chasing expert after his 84 not out, including the six off Dale Steyn’s penultimate ball, to take New Zealand to their first World Cup final last year.

The 37-year-old averaged 61.33 at a strike rate of 80 from four innings batting second in Australia.

In 2009 that included 61 not out in the six-wicket win at Melbourne and 115 in the 32-run loss at Sydney, both venues in the upcoming series.

He has also never been part of a squad which has lost a Chappell-Hadlee series.

“I’m a big fan of chasing.

“If you know what you need to score, then you can only blame yourself if you don’t get there,”

Grant Elliott is a big fan of chasing a total in ODIs. Elliott told the NZ Herald from Chittagong where he is playing in the Bangladesh Premier League.

“Rather than being 280-4, I would rather know you can use all your wickets trying to get 281.

“I really enjoyed playing in Australia on what I’d consider the world’s best batting pitches.

“A rule of thumb is that you’ve

always got longer than you think; the deeper you take the game, the more mistakes the opposition make.”

Bigger fields also require strategic thinking.

“Pushing [the ball] into gaps or hitting over extra cover and mid-wicket are key skills,” Elliott said.

“Basically you’ve got to find

open areas and rotate the strike, whereas on smaller New Zealand grounds you can release the pressure with one big heave.

“I remember looking at their fields and thinking ‘this is awesome’ because, at the time, I was someone who looked to place the ball for four rather than going for a six.”

Oram averaged 63.50 at a strike rate of 125 from three innings batting second in Australia. In 2007 that included 101 not out in an eight-run loss chasing 344 to win at Perth.

“In Australia you skin the cat differently by turning ones into twos and twos into threes with so much space, rather than relying on hitting boundaries.

“You can score more than you probably think. It’s a matter of being fit, and a good judge of a run.

“I remember being in a strong position in one match when Michael Clarke came out, played low risk cricket working the ball around, and they ended up getting home easily.”

Oram said the New Zealanders needed to take the crowd’s exuberance in their stride.

“If you’re getting smoked and bowling badly, it’s probably warranted.

“I never found it to be untoward. It’s not a great feeling to have the odd bottle top or coin fly past you, but I wouldn’t have said there was anything I didn’t anticipate.

“Even at Melbourne, where it was nowhere near full with a crowd of 50,000-60,000, it was still a great experience.”

Oram said heat wasn’t as much of a concern in the modern era.

“Playing so often on the subcontinent makes a difference these days.

“You have better ways to deal with sweat and rehydration with the right electrolyte drinks.

“It’s just important to have a process at drinks breaks and with regular changes of gloves to make sure you’re on top of things.”

New Zealand have a chance to strike a blow to the heart of Australia’s pride during their one-day series but coach Mike Hesson insists they’ll be content just to get one over on “big brother”.

Australia’s world No.1 ODI ranking will go on the line during the three-game Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series, with South Africa to take top spot if there is a Black Caps whitewash.

The Australians are in danger of sliding down the rankings following their first ever bilateral 5-0 series whitewash loss, to the Proteas in South Africa.

The New Zealanders, who sit at No.3 on the ICC 50-over rankings, make no secret that they consider a series win over the Aussies as one of the pinnacles of international cricket.

While a chance to move closer to No.1 on the one-day rankings, having ascended to the top of the Twenty20 rankings, would be in the back of the Kiwis’ minds, Hesson says beating the Australians would be good enough for him.

“I think probably at the moment we want to hang onto the Chappell-Hadlee,” Hesson said.

“We won it the last couple of times. It’s really important for us.

Australia are our big brothers and to win a bilateral series against them is important for us.

“If the by-product of that is an increase in rankings, then great.

“But we tend to look at rankings at the back-end of the season and see how you’ve gone rather than as a motivation.”

The Kiwis retained the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy with a win in the pool stage of the 2015 World Cup and a 2-1 victory on home soil in February.

While the Black Caps squad has their tails up following a 2-0 test series win over Pakistan, the Australians are facing tough questions after their humbling home Test series loss to South Africa.

Hesson declined to stick the boot into the under-fire Aussies, saying he expected the country’s test troubles to have no bearing on the one-day side.

Kiwi flying in Sydney practice McLaughlin has set the fastest time in the opening practice session of the Sydney 400 championship finale.

The departing Volvo driver set a time of 1:27.8s to head off Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney and championship contender Jamie Whincup.

Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen sat atop the standings for the majority of the session but was eclipsed as time expired and ended up with the fourth fastest time of the session.

He carries a 191-point championship lead over Red Bull Racing team-mate Whincup heading into the final two races of the weekend and showed that he will be hard to beat on a track where he’s enjoyed tremendous success in recent years.

Championship leader van Gisbergen had a massive moment on a flying lap as he caught an idling James Moffat in an awkward part of the track. The Kiwi was lucky to avoid contact with either the Volvo or the wall, which could have spelled disaster.

Thankfully it only cost him with what looked like the fastest lap of the session at that point.

Filthy lucre v the power of the black jersey D oes the All Blacks jersey still have the power to keep top players in New Zealand?

Just this week Israel Dagg, Ben Smith and Aaron Cruden’s names have been added to the burgeoning list of top players supposedly about to jump ship, with the lure of previously unimaginable dollar signs paving the road to Europe.

To be fair, when Mourad Boudjellal comes calling, waving a chequebook so heavy he can hardly carry it, every player must be sorely tempted to secure their and their family’s financial future, with three or four years hard yakka in Europe reaping a colossal return.

It’s still not remotely the telephone-number figures that top footballers and basketballers command, even golfers are in the stratosphere compared to rugby (in 2016 Harris English, Jim Herman and Gary Woodland all earned well over $2 million

– haven’t heard of any of them), but compared to what they would pick up at home, there’s a vast gulf.

Senior players can now expect a retainer of between $400,000 to $800,000 a year; big names like Brodie Retallick, Kieran Read and now Beauden Barrett will be a bit above that.

But that pales beside the riches available in France, with Dan Carter picking up well over 2.5 million NZ dollars a season; what could Barrett command right now?

Even John Afoa (remember him?) is plying his trade in England for more than a million a year.

There was much tut-tutting when Carl Hayman left a few years ago while at the top of his game with the ABs; he’s still on over $2m a season, so if he’s squirrelled away a few bucks a month then he’s doing quite nicely thank you.

It’s certainly not a new phenomenon, although a few years back it was the brother code of league that was the big threat.

Hardly looking like a player who had not competed in 466 days, Woods ran off three straight birdies and was tied for the lead in the Hero World Challenge as he approached the turn. Three shots in the bushes, one shot in the water and a few fits of anger sent him toward the bottom of the pack. A pair of double bogeys over the final three holes ruined an otherwise impressive return, and Woods shot 40 on the back nine at Albany Golf Club and had to settle for a 1-over 73.

Testing time for students James Ford

tudents throughout the country will have sighed with relief yesterday as NCEA exams came to an end.

It’s a stressful time for everyone – children and parents alike.

But it has been a particularly difficult time for those sitting their exams this year.

The recent earthquakes disrupted revision, exam schedules and, more importantly, young people’s lives.

It wasn’t just the shakes that caused students’ angst, but also exams containing errors.

High school pupils in Palmerston North sat through an hour of a history exam before learning it had been postponed due to the North Canterbury earthquake.

Errors in exam papers for level one maths, in which a question contained a discrepancy in a graph, a level two maths calculus paper, where a figure given in a question was incorrect and a level three statistics exam that had incorrect probabilities in a table rendered a question, and a subsequent question, impossible to answer.

The classes of 2016 undoubtedly endured some rotten luck.

During a time that it pays to be at your calmest, they had a lot, through no fault of their own, against them.

NZQA deputy chief executive of assessment Kristine Kilkelly said drawing up new NCEA exams so students could have another chance was not practical.

However, it was stated that students who missed exams, or felt they did badly because of the quakes, could get a derived grade based on their year’s work.

We all remember this time in our lives and the importance that is laid upon it.

It’s a period in which our teachers and parents readily suggest will set the tone for the future.

It’s a lot to cope with at such a tender age.

There’s been constant discussion on the impact it has on students and whether a different approach to assessments should be considered.

Not that it will benefit the current crop of youngsters that have just finished their exams.

It has been a rough time for all affected, but, in a time in which young people are often criticised, we should take this opportunity to praise their attitudes and temperament in what’s been an extremely testing month.

What helps pupils thrive?

O

h me, oh my, oh the shame, the SHAME! What will become of us now?

How can we face the international community? When we walk across the international stage, will everyone laugh at us?

So for those of you who didn’t eagerly await the published results of the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), let me fill you in.

New Zealand didn’t win or come second or even place in the top 10. (For your information we have never placed in the top 10 since it first started).

Every four years since 1995 we have signed up for a group from Boston to administer tests to our Year 5 and 9 children in maths and science.

Wiser heads than ours know as politicians decided to use some of your GST contributions to be in a geek club of countries that compare teaching ideologies by submitting 5000 students to some random maths and science tests, to see if their education experiments are working.

Comparing each other’s results every four years as countries is pointless.

There is no prize, no certificate at the UN along with house points for the winning nation.

Unless we as a country decided to conduct an indepth analysis of why our little lab rats didn’t do as well as the rats from Singapore or Slovenia, this testing and ranking

Good teachers make the difference to children’s school life. will continue to be pointless.

But what is even more hilarious to watch is the reaction by our militant mates of the teacher’s union get their sandals and socks twisted making the claim that national standards are to blame for our TIMMS ranking.

They say that better funding and support for teachers is what will make a difference raising achievement. Bollocks.

If you want to know what makes a difference in a child’s achievement, you don’t need an

international assessment or a union opinion – ask our parents – they know.

The most consistent comment I get from parents about what has made a difference to their child’s learning is a good teacher.

A teacher who “gets” their child. A teacher who knows exactly where their child’s learning is up to and what they need to do next to keep their learning going.

A teacher who makes a very real connection with their child and constantly reflects on what

they can do to help the child they teach.

No amount of increased school funding or change to a teacher’s conditions will alter the fact that parents know that it’s the quality of the teacher that matters.

The problem with the knee-jerk statement from the union is they give no evidence to support it.

That’s because there is none unless the union have been conducting a secret study that directly links national standards and TIMMS assessment.

That’s highly unlikely as they spend the union fees on printing coloured circles with slogans like, “Stand Up For Kids”.

What does that mean? Like before that came out did we not not advocate for the children of our nation? The only sensible statement made by NZEI in reaction to the TIMMS results is around teacher professional development.

It’s sensible because investing in our teachers works – it leads to better teachers when there is high quality professional development that leads to teachers improving their practice.

It’s a shame that NZEI make excellent statements in their vision around quality teachers and a skilled workforce, yet have never pushed for continual upskilling and learning for their teacher members.

Ask teachers if they want this and they will say that would be great, however, it is always an issue of when.

After school and the concentration levels drop and weekends are for families, so how about holidays?

Do teachers really need 12 weeks’ holiday a year? Is this the best use of tax money in terms of salaries paid to have a workforce of over 90,000 down tools for so long? If NZEI really want to bang a drum and become the champion of arguing for what lifts student achievement, how about pushing for teachers to have half of their holidays back at school, improving what they do.

Child abuse and “partner” abuse are costly, painful reminders of the facts.

So what is the “fix”? One thing

is for sure, it is not money!

We cannot just throw money at the problem and let someone else deal with it!

It must be personal – one couple at a time recognising that the family was established by God. He gave it a very specific definition, purpose and plan.

Having a family as God designed it requires work – it is not to be taken lightly!

With a heart changed by the knowledge of the love of God; changed by the gospel, the good news, of Jesus Christ; a heart changed and empowered by the

grace of God – the family can be the way its creator wants it to be.

No government funding required! No new laws enacted!

Just some old-fashioned, loveinspired, grace-empowered desire for a family that would please God. Perfect people are not a prerequisite!

Only a perfect loving God motivating us to have the family He intended.

We hope you will recognise a need for a motivational boost in your family.

More New Zealand transport companies have started billing a surcharge as a result of last month’s earthquake.

Fastway Couriers is the latest to announce it has been forced to pass on some of its quake-related costs to its customers.

It said in a statement that it could no longer absorb the additional costs associated with diverting through Lewis Pass while large sections of State Highway 1 remain closed.

It will charge customers a 2.98 per cent surcharge from December 5.

Bed tax proposed in report to PM A report for New Zealand’s key tourism leaders calls on the Government to introduce a bed tax and a $5 increase in the border levy to fund infrastructure growth.

They want a $130 million annual fund to meet infrastructure problems exacerbated by the surging number of tourist, particularly for regional communities.

The report released yesterday is the result of work commissioned by the chief executives of Air New Zealand, Auckland Airport, Christchurch Airport and Tourism Holdings.

The report proposes that a National Tourism Infrastructure Levy be created comprising of a 2 per cent national bed levy across the accommodation sector and a $5 increase to the border levy which would raise $65 million a year from the industry.

Christopher Luxon Matching funds from the government would bring this to $130m per annum to fund local tourism infrastructure needs. It also recommends that the fund have a formal review every five years to ensure the funds are being appropriately applied.

The company leaders say the report is intended to be an input

into the government policy process and to provoke a conversation between the tourism industry, local and central government on investment in public tourism infrastructure such as car parks, sanitation and visitor facilities.

Air New Zealand chief executive Christopher Luxon said this work was a great example of industry leaders working together to create a national and targeted tourism infrastructure funding mechanism to ensure the long term sustainable growth of tourism.

“Tourism is New Zealand’s largest industry, and growing fast.

“While growth presents huge opportunities for New Zealand communities the challenges that come with growth need to be well managed and the tourism industry is committed to being part of the solution,’’ he said.

■ CHRISTMAS SPENDING

Parents, in-laws draw short straw Parents and in-laws will be missing out this Christmas as Kiwis look to spend less on the Christmas season.

The latest Mastercard consumer research survey found almost a third of Kiwis, or 31 per cent, said they felt more financially stressed about Christmas compared to last year.

In order to cut back on costs, those surveyed said they were planning to spend less on gifts for parents and in-laws with almost half saying they would only spend $50 on their parents compared with 20 per cent spending that amount last year.

Spending on siblings was also getting cut with 60 per cent planning to spend under $50 compared to 35 per cent in 2015.

Although 58 per cent of people planned to spend around the

same amount this year on Christmas, 29 per cent said they would spend less to try and reduce their December costs.

The main reason for this was having less disposable income according to 56 per cent of those surveyed, or having budgeted to spend a lesser amount.

Peter Chisnall Country Manager for Mastercard New Zealand and Pacific Islands said it was good to see Kiwis taking practical steps to help manage the financial impact of the holiday.

“Christmas costs can add up when you combine gifts, travel and food, which can mean the holiday period can be the most financially stressful time of year for many,” Chisnall said.

“The reality of Christmas is that expenditures increase over this period, so having a clear strat-

egy around how to manage your money makes a big difference.”

Overall half of New Zealanders said they expected their total household Christmas spend would be under $500 on items such as food, travel, presents and decorations.

“Ways to ease the holiday pressure include saving or spreading purchases throughout the year, and for others reducing the number of gifts purchased or setting a smaller budget can go a long way to making the silly season more enjoyable,” Chisnall said.

“The key thing is to have a practical approach and plan ahead.”

Children were one of the biggest expected Christmas expense with 20 per cent of respondents saying they were spending between $200 and $300 on gifts for each child.

Pilot skipped fuel stop Bolivia’s aviation authority has suspended the licence of the airline behind a disastrous plane crash that killed 71 people, as blame for the crash shifted to the pilot and coowner of the airline for failing to make a refuel stop.

The charter flight from Bolivia to Colombia, which was carrying rising Brazilian football team Chapecoense, ended in tragedy after an apparent fuel shortage caused the plane to smash head first into the Andes near Colombia’s second city of Medellin.

Of the 77 people on board just six survived the impact, including three members of FC Chapecoense.

Yesterday, workers in the team’s small Brazilian hometown of Chapeco erected temporary structures in the stadium to shelter the coffins of 51 victims expected to arrive back on Friday for an open-air wake.

Some 100,000 fans, about half the city’s population, are expected to attend.

Bolivia said yesterday that it was immediately suspending airline LaMia’s operation certificate, adding that the move implies no wrongdoing no their part, as Colombian investigators said the crash might have resulted from lack of fuel on the plane.

Freddy Bonilla, secretary of airline security at Colombia’s aviation authority, said investigators combing the crash site on a wooded hillside outside of Medellin found no traces of fuel in the wreckage of the BAe 146 made by Britain’s BAE Systems Plc.

Experts said pilot Miguel Quiroga, the airline’s owner, missed opportunities to refuel while flying at the very limit of the BAE built jet’s range.

Gustavo Vargas, a director at LaMia, told Bolivian press that it was Captain Quiroga had decided to skip refuelling the aircraft in Colombian capital Bogota, choosing instead to fly directly to Jose Maria Cordova airport on the outskirts of Medellin.

“The pilot was the one who made the decision,” Mr Vargas said.

“He thought the fuel would last.”

A leaked recording from Avianca co-pilot Juan Sebastián Upegui, who overheard the panicked conversation between Quiroga and air traffic control from his cockpit, revealed that the LaMia pilot requested an emergency land-

ing due to a fuel shortage.

After being asked how much time the plane could stay in the air, Quiroga replied, “We have a fuel emergency, ma’am, that’s why I am asking you [to land] at once [...]

“I request an immediate descent.”

Shortly after the exchange, the pilot declared a “total electrical failure” and pleaded for navigational assistance before the plane crashed just 30 miles from the airport.

Freddy Bonilla, the air safety chief for Colombia’s civil aviation authority, said at a news conference that the plane was out of fuel at the moment of impact.

This, he said, violated international rules requiring that aircraft maintain sufficient fuel in reserve when flying between airports.

Steven Draper, who flew a

variant of the LaMia aircraft for British Airways over a period of 15 years, told the Telegraph yesterday: “If you are into your fuel reserve, it is a mayday [...] you have to specify in the call that it is related to fuel, and how many minutes of flying time you have.”

Evidence suggests that Quiroga did not declare his emergency in time to the air traffic control team, or communicate how long the aircraft could remain in the air to the Colombian airport, causing the plane to crash.

The tragedy has rocked Chapeco.

The team had been due to play Colombian side Atletico Nacional on Wednesday in Medellin.

Instead, Nacional’s Atanasio Girardot stadium played host to a vigil to honour those who died in the crash.

Toowoomba ‘Australia’s most racist city’ Golliwog dolls have been spotted for sale under a “white Christmas” display sign.

Customer George Helon said he felt “shock and awe” when he saw the display at Terry White Chemists in Toowoomba, in south-east Queensland.

To make matters worse, the dolls were displayed underneath a sign reading: “Experience a white Christmas.”

Golliwogs were popular up until the 1970s and are widely understood to be a racist caricature of people of colour.

A manager for the chemist told Sunshine Coast Daily there was no ill-intent, adding the dolls and sign would be separated.

A Terry White spokesman said the store had not made a connection between the connotation of the dolls and the sign.

The role of the Zone Leader will be to promote the Mitre 10 image to our customers by ensuring the highest level of customer service and store presentation at all times for our customers. This position will be full-time and include one weekend day.

The duties of the Zone Leader will be extensive; revolving around the management of staff and control of merchandising and shop floor presentation within multiple departments in the store.
