Parents and schools are being vigilant after a vehicle was seen parked outside Longbeach School, allegedly taking photographs.

Principal Neil Simons said through the school’s Facebook page he had been made aware of an unknown vehicle that had been parked at the far end of the school field, allegedly taking photographs.

The car had been spotted on multiple days, and police were notified and have

looked in to the matter, but were unable to locate the vehicle.

Simons said he has notified other schools of the incident, and that police were happy with the measures they have put in place to deal with the issue, and that they were available to help with students if necessary.

“Also, today I have been posted out in the carpark for all of morning tea and lunch. I did manage to photograph one car that fitted the description and have had that car ruled out by the students who saw the car yesterday,” Simons said on Facebook.

A police spokesperson said while that there has been no indication of a suspicious approach in this instance, police encourage people to have conversations with children about what to do if they feel unsafe.

“We encourage families to have discussions around behaviours or actions that make children feel uncomfortable, rather than concentrating on the types of people that would harm them,” the spokesperson said.

Frank turns off the lights

Insulation subsidies go begging

For more than a decade, Methven man Frank Sandys has brought joy to the faces of both young and old people from around his township and further afield through his annual Christmas lights display.

But this year, Sandys has officially pulled the plug and won’t be opening up his property for hundreds of people to enjoy a little Christmas spirit through the sights and sounds his years of collecting have provided.

And he’s pretty gutted about it too.

“It’s a tough decision, but I think I might have went too big last year and it took its toll,” he said.

“I’ve also had a knee operation and getting up and down the ladder is a bit trickier than what it once was too, so I haven’t got many options really.

“I have enjoyed doing it for so long, but it’s time to pass it on I think.”

Sandys originally started his Christmas displays when living at Rose Cottage 11 years ago.

He would then light up Lochhead Crescent every year until he moved out to his current residence near the Methven Golf Course where he took things to the next level in terms of his displays.

hundreds would flock through his gate to take in everything he’d put together.

Sandys never asked for money for his efforts, instead he asked for a donation to go to the local Methven Fire Brigade, something visitors were always more than willing to do.

“I’ve had some incredible people come through and check it

out each year and it has been a real pleasure.

“There’s some pretty mixed feelings there to be honest,” he said.

But he’s also hoping that he can still give to the Methven community despite not displaying anything this year too.

“I’ve got all this stuff, pretty much anything you can think of

and it’s all for sale at a bargain price.

“I’d love to see it stay in the Methven community and allow people to keep enjoying it, but it’s all there to go.”

Up to 92 per cent of the cost of insulating homes in the Ashburton District could be covered through a scheme promoted by the Community Energy Action group.

Its chief executive, Caroline Shone, was in Ashburton on Thursday pushing the warmer homes message, and said she believed too many people eligible for financial help with insulation were missing out.

A 92 per cent subsidy is available until June next year to people who live in the home they own, providing that house was built before 2008 and providing its owners were either community services card holders or who qualified as on a lower income or living in a low decile area.

The news for those people would get even better next year, Shone said, with heating subsidies set to come in from the middle of the year.

Her organisation works across Canterbury with home owners to improve home insulation and home heating.

The organisation also runs New Zealand’s largest curtain bank, offers independent energy advice and offers home energy checks.

Last year alone the group helped 900 people with curtains, Shone said.

Community Energy Action also worked with Environment Canterbury on its clean air programme to help people who could not afford to replace their log burners, she said.

Education was key in ensuring people understood how to keep their homes warm and dry, Shone said.

Insulation and efficient heating aside, some of the steps that could be taken to keep homes dry were as simple as ensuring windows were open for 20 minutes every day.

All eyes will be on the sky, with any cloud below 2500 feet likely to put a stop to the event.

“We can’t fly or jump if the cloud is that low so that would end it,” he said.

“The easiest thing to do would

be to get a bunch of mates together and do it, and then tell people we’ve broken the record, but we wouldn’t raise any money that way.

“The issue is now that we have had so much attention on what we are doing that if it goes wrong

or we don’t do it everybody is going to know about it.”

The current New Zealand record was set in 1999, and Gregor said he is not surprised it has not been broken since then.

“It is almost logistically impossible, there are so many cogs that have to go together,” he said.

“We have 40-plus people here and every one of them has had to take time of work and is volunteering their time to be here.”

While you might expect most people to want to take a break after doing one activity 100 times in one day, especially one like skydiving, Gregor says he cannot wait to get back to “normal skydiving”.

“This has really felt like a chore training for this, so I am really looking forward to getting back to normal skydiving.”

“We are going to have a spectator area set up and I really hope people from Ashburton come down and see what is going on because we are going to be making a fair bit of noise,” he said.

“There is a bit of a buzz around town and I am really grateful for the local support I have received.”

Nurse stabbed at Chch’s Hillmorton Hospital A nurse has been stabbed at a Christchurch hospital just days after another nurse had boiling water poured over her at the same facility.

In the latest incident, a nurse at Hillmorton Hospital has been stabbed in the leg.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman confirmed the incident happened yester-

Aiming for 100 jumps When you read this story, chances are skydiver Steve Gregor will either be jumping out of an aeroplane, or rueing cloud that could ruin his shot at a New Zealand record and an even bigger fundraising total.

Today Gregor will attempt to complete 100 skydives, all in the aim of raising money for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, making his first jump at 5.20am, with hopes the last jump will be completed by 9.15pm.

“We have come so far the only thing that can go wrong now is the weather,” he said.

“I have been training for this as a second full time job for the past year and it would be a shame for it to be called off as we don’t have a back-up date.”

Gregor will use two planes, four pilots, six parachutes and more than 40 support staff on the ground to help him out with his attempt.

The support crew includes everybody from a nutritionist to the Australian record holder Jules McConnel who completed 150 jumps in a day.

“She has flown over specifically to help out on the day and she has been a massive help as she is just about the only person who has also been through this,”

A 42-year-old man was arrested and charged with injuring with intent to injure. He is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court today.

the nurse’s injuries are. It is understood the incident happened at the hospital’s mental health unit. It is the same unit a nurse was working in when she had boiling water poured over her by a patient almost a week ago.

She suffered second-degree burns to the left side of her chest, shoulder and arm.

Facebook page posted graphic photos of the burns and said the nurse was writing notes in the nurses station when the boiling water was thrown at her, causing second-degree burns and “future scarring, not to mention emotional trauma”.

“When questioned why, the patient shrugged their shoulders,” the post said.

Youth Council A recruitment drive is under way for Ashburton’s Youth Council.

The voice for the district’s young people works under the umbrella of the Ashburton District Council and it allows young people to have a role in decision making.

The council also assists in and coordinates a number of community events. Members work alongside council staff and elected member and act as the consultative link between young people and the council. Applications are sought from people between the ages of 15 and 24 and close December 21.

Travel pay rise Travelling on council business will now be a little bit less painful at the pump for Ashburton’s district councillors as their vehicle kilometre allowances have just been increased. The Remuneration Authority has bumped up councillor kilometre rates to match the Inland Revenue’s schedule for self-employed people and employees and in many cases that means they’ll be getting an increase of three cents a kilometre.

Councillors will now receive an allowance of 76 cents a kilometre for both petrol and diesel vehicles for the first 14,000 of eligible travel and 26 cents per kilometre after that. For petrol hybrid vehicles after 14,000 is travelled, the subsidy drops to 18 cents and for electric vehicles to nine cents.

Reminiscing about the good old days

Some of Ashburton’s oldest residents got the chance to catch up and reminisce about the good old days last Friday at the Mid Canterbury combined Friendship Club’s function for over 90s.

Twenty members attended the event, and were joined by the national chairman Graeme Pierson and South Island President Paulette Lawrence.

“We started doing these events in Christchurch last year and have also held them in Timaru as well as here,” Lawrence said.

“It is just to show appreciation to the older members of the group as a lot of them are founding members and many of them don’t get out often and this is good entertainment.”

The afternoon comprised of a nostalgia session about the 1920s and 1930s, followed by afternoon tea and a carol sing-along.

Lawrence said that the Friendship Club is a great way for people of retirement age to keep doing activities, or even meet people if they have moved in to a new area.

“We have meetings and monthly outings and plenty of side groups for a variety of activities,” she said.

Ashburton Water Zone Committee

Local farmers chip in to help improve water quality Water quality in Hinds Plains streams has been given a helping hand thanks to the work of landowners and scientists from the University of Canterbury.

Over the past four years, three local projects received close to $70,000 in Immediate Steps funding from the Ashburton Water Zone Committee to help address aquatic weed, sediment, and nutrient management issues. This work is being led by the University of Canterbury’s Waterway Rehabilitation Experiment (CAREX) which helps find practical ways to improve waterway health.

At Warren Harris’ Coldstream farm woodchip-filled trenches known as denitrifying bioreactors were installed in the ground beside the waterway to help remove nitrates. Recent results show an average 10% reduction in nitrate levels.

Environment Canterbury staff have also been working with farmers in the zone to help develop and implement plans to reduce their impact on the environment.

The Ashburton Water Zone Committee is a community led committee supported by councils.

Since the CAREX project kicked off in 2014 more than 17,000 locally-sourced native plants have been planted along agricultural waterways in Canterbury.

Community planting days and school have also been undertaken in the Ashburton zone.

DNA could crack open case

T

wenty years since murdered Ashburton schoolgirl Kirsty Marianne Bentley went missing while walking her dog, it remains one of New Zealand’s highest-profile murder mysteries. It still fascinates, chills and divides Mid Cantabrians. Locals are quick to offer a theory or toss out a name of a likely suspect.

In the late 90s, genetic crime solving was in its infancy.

But now, Detective Inspector Greg Murton believes that advances in modern DNA testing techniques could crack open the case.

The dog leash found around the dog’s neck — tying her to a tree at the Ashburton riverbank 50km away from where Kirsty’s body was later found — along with underwear found nearby will be included in new tests to be carried out by scientists at the Institute of Environmental Science and Research, New Zealand’s Crown Research Institute, in Auckland.

“The case is still open and being investigated,” Murton told the Herald on Sunday.

“With the new forensic testing we are hopeful to get the right result for the family even after all these years. There have been other cases recently where murders that are 20 years old have been solved through DNA or other reasons, so we’re forever hopeful.”

DNA profiling — a process of identifying a specific pattern of DNA from a person or sample of bodily tissue — has revolutionised forensic science and global crime investigation.

In New Zealand, there have been several high-profile examples where DNA has nailed criminals decades after they thought they were scot-free.

In 1995, in a joint project involving police and ESR, New Zealand created the National DNA Profile Databank.

It involved the collection of DNA profiles from convicted offenders and volunteers onto a central database that is matched against DNA profiles obtained

Testing has advanced since and the new techniques will be applied to the evidence from Operation Kirsty.

In 2002, Jules Mikus was jailed for life after DNA evidence linked him to the savage rape and murder of Napier schoolgirl Teresa Cormack 15 years earlier.

It was also the downfall of Jarrod Allan Mangels.

After a drunken Nelson night out in 2003, Mangels was asked to give a blood sample. His DNA was later found to match the DNA found on nail clippings from Maureen McKinnel who was strangled at her Arrowtown

home on Boxing Day 1987 and dumped naked over the Arrow River Bridge.

Murton, who took charge of the unsolved crime file case in 2014, is hopeful for some test results by the end of the year. But he cautioned that final answers still may be some way off — if they are ever found.

“It’s such a fine level of testing. [ESR] have to interpret those results and then look at where we go from there,” he says. “More sensitive testing methods are great but at the end of the day we still need a suspect to test this against.”

whose movements on New Year’s Eve were vague, and whose story later changed.

Both said police treated them as suspects and vehemently

denied any involvement, with Sid doing so right up to his death in June 2015, aged 64.

One theory doing the rounds was that John had killed his sister and that his father helped him dump the body. He has said detectives appeared to think he was jealous of his sister because she had a boyfriend.

In March last year, Murton confirmed he was looking at double Ashburton Work and Income killer Russell Tully as a possible suspect. The former local diesel mechanic was ruled out after Murton quizzed him behind bars and came away satisfied with his alibi.

Kirsty’s mother Jill Peachy is kept up-to-date on the case by Murton. She’s aware of the new DNA testing and that it’s helped catch killers years down the line.

But she long ago ceased holding her breath.

“If it’s going to be, it will,” she told the Herald on Sunday.

“I just hope the killer is sweating that one day they will be caught.

“I don’t have a face to hate, nor a reason to assess the ‘why?’ One day 20 years ago, I waved a happy bye-bye to my girl and then she was gone. There’s been nothing to show me what happened.”

Volunteering can be rewarding

Celebrating Diwali

D

iwali is one of the most important Hindu festivals.

It marks the return of Lord Rama (the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu) along with Sita (his wife) and Lakshman (Rama’s brother) from 14 years of exile after a long war and conquering the demon king Ravana.

Diwali is already mentioned in Sanskrit texts which were completed in the second half of the 1st millennium CE. To celebrate this the people light their houses with earthen lamps called diyas, lights, candles, firecrackers and also make lots of sweets and delicious food.

There are many historical and mythical reasons for celebrating Diwali such as goddess Laxami’s birthday, Vishnu’s rescue of Laxami, Krishna killing Narakaasur, the return of the Pandavs, the victory of Rama, special day for Arya Samaj and the Sikhs.

In each of the above legends lies the significance of the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance The Ashburton Indian Multicultural Charitable Trust has been celebrating Diwali for the past nine years, and more and more people are becoming aware of this event.

When you move to a new area there are lots of adjustments to make, when you move from another country there are even more.

Recently Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury, in partnership with Volunteering New Zealand and supported by Ashburton District Council Welcoming Communities and Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network, held two workshops for new migrants on volunteering.

These informative and informal workshops are a new programme that Volunteering New Zealand is offering around the country.

The workshops, held at Hotel Ashburton, were the first South Island ones. Ross Patel from Volunteering New Zealand has designed workshops to engage new migrants in volunteering in their area. The workshops were facilitated by Ross and Mid Canterbury Co-ordinator of Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury, Dellwyn Moylan.

Moving into a new area can be lonely and volunteering is a great way to make new friends and make connections. One part of the workshop asked participants to share their needs as a migrant moving into a new community and what helped them settle in and what were the challenges.

One thought that came through strongly was about making friends and connecting, so volunteering can help address this.

An interesting part of the workshop involved the migrants sharing about volunteering in their home country, what volunteering is and what is it called in their home country.

A key part of the workshop was about the benefits and motivation for volunteering. The benefits and motivations not only apply to new migrants but anyone.

unteering is about giving back, meeting people and experience.

New migrants would find these areas all help them as they settle into a new country. If you move to somewhere where you only know a few people it can be daunting to get out mix with others and form relationships. Volunteering can help with this as you work with and alongside other people you get to know others and so friendships can form.

As part of the workshop, all those present listed some of their skills, and what an amazing and diverse array of skills and talents.

You may enjoy cooking but not think about volunteering to cook at somewhere like Age Concern, you might have talents as a painter and decorator but not realise Plunket needs someone for a oneoff painting project, you might like spending time with others just doing ordinary everyday activities so volunteering to an IHC friend volunteer gives you an opportunity to do just that.

Volunteering can be a way you use your experience alongside your employment or as you look for employment.

When someone volunteers

they give to others, they give to their community and they give to themselves. Most people get as much out of volunteering as those they volunteer to help. From conversations I have had with new migrants many are pleased to do things for their new home community.

We were fortunate to hear from seven local organisations that were looking for volunteers – Civil Defence, Fire and Emergency, Canispire, Guiding New Zealand, Plunket, Town Watch and Ashburton Art Gallery.

These organisations shared with the new migrants about the rewards, benefits and opportunities of volunteering with their organisations.

Since the workshop we have had some of the new migrants sign up and we are thrilled that they have decided to volunteer.

Foot, fist, way – more commonly known as tae kwon-do Tae kwon-do is the Korean martial art that originated as Tae Kyon over 1300 years ago during the Silla Dynasty in Korea.

Tae Kyon was taught and practiced among the youths of the Hwarang-Do, who were handpicked to be trained as military leaders of the Silla, one of the three ruling kingdoms of Korea at that time.

Tae Kyon’s effectiveness was enhanced after it developed hand techniques at the turn of the 20th century when Karate was introduced from China.

Modern Tae Kwon-Do was perfected and given its name by Gen. Choi Hong Hi on April 11, 1955 to supersede the ancient Korean fighting arts. It is an effective form of combat and its techniques are widely used by military and law enforcement officers. It has also been recognised as an official Olympic sport.

Tae means “to jump or kick or smash with the feet,” kwon means “to block, punch, strike or smash with the hand or fist,” and do means “an art or way”. Thus tae kwon-do” means the “foot, fist, way”.

Tae kwon-do is an unarmed

self-defence system involving the skilled application of techniques that include punches, strikes, kicks, blocks, dodges and interceptions with the bare hands, arms and feet, to swiftly overpower an opponent.

A tae kwon-do student is trained to utilise their full body potential to execute its techniques with devastating effect.

Tae kwon-do training is not merely confined to mastery of techniques; it will result in the acquiring of high speed, concentration, reaction force breath control and most important, a calm mind.

It instils a spirit of strict self-imposed discipline and the ideal of a noble moral character.

Tae kwon-do also embraces the Tennent’s of tae kwon-do. Courtesy, integrity, perseverance, selfcontrol and indomitable spirit.

These factors combined create the great physical power that the tae kwon-do student strives to achieve, and all of these factors can only be mastered through regular and concerted practice.

After that he was hooked, training as much as he could to progress up the ranks.

The brother’s passion had grown so much even their father gave it a go, so tae kwon-do became a family affair.

Another group ready to get their licence

T

he driver licensing scheme is going really well with the first of our participants from the April group nearly ready to sit her restricted licence.

Others in the group have started having their lessons with a professional driving instructor and they appear to be going really well.

It has been quite challenging to get lessons in with the weather we have been having lately, but at least it gives the women an opportunity to experience driving in all weather conditions.

The second group are doing well and we have already had three people through their learner’s test, and another three ready to take the test over the coming week.

It has been a busy couple of weeks matching up mentors and students, but that has been a lot of fun too.

We have a lovely group of volunteers putting their hands up to help our women and we really appreciate what they do for us.

We are having an afternoon tea next week to show our appreciation.

My name is Sharon Campbell Darby and I am a South African.

I’m the only daughter to John and Catherine Millar who immigrated to South Africa from Scotland, UK, in 1969.

My family enjoyed camping, so I have been all around South Africa from the historical area of Barberton in Mpumalanga to the Pilanesberg Mountain in the North West Province which has abundance of wild game and to take a moment to experience the serenity of grazing elephants, rhinos and giraffes. Life was good and the most beautiful way to start each day was with a grateful heart.

I am married to an amazing man called Scott Darby. He is originally from Leister, UK. His parents Geoff and Dre immigrated to South Africa in 1985.

Scott and I have one daughter called Courtney who was born in Benoni and is 21 years old. She attended Benoni High School and performed very well in her schooling matriculating with four distinctions in maths, science, biology and accountancy. Her dream is to study genetics at the University of Otago.

I was born in the beautiful warm country of South Africa in a town east of Johannesburg (The City of Gold) called Benoni (the municipality district of Ekurhuleni) which was established as a mining camp after the discovery of gold in 1887.

About five years ago, Scott’s parents immigrated to New Zealand and settled down in Auckland in Stanmore Bay by the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

We spoke to them a great deal and they mentioned to us how beautiful New Zealand was, and that it was generally a very safe place with a low crime rate, which we were interested in as crime in South Africa had escalated to such a degree that you did not feel safe anywhere, even in your own home. We also wanted to give Courtney a life where crime was not the centre of attention that she could study, live life, do well and benefit herself and New Zealand.

I enjoy rugby, so coming to a country with the best rugby team in the world was a treat and I enjoy a good game between the Springboks and the All Blacks, both are equally good and both deserve to win.

The 1995 World Cup Rugby will forever be the most emotional game I have ever watched, and I was so proud when Captain Francois Pienaar held that winners’ cup above his head, I cried with happiness for the win and I cried for the proud uniting of our country.

With regards to Ashburton, well Ashburton picked us it would seem. I had never heard of Ashburton before we came here. When Scott was offered a permanent job position at Talleys as an engineer, we jumped at the chance for a start to a new adventure, even though we were a long way from family.

Within the first six months of coming to Ashburton there was a lot of challenges for me that I had to overcome and that I did not anticipate. Being unfamiliar with my surroundings, acclimatising as I was used to warmer weather; missing my family and friends in South Africa, and missing my family in Auckland was a huge strain on me. I left behind my established social network, which left me feeling isolated.

I used to hear so much about the benefits of living abroad, with personal growth, but there were moments where I felt overwhelming emotion.

I was an outsider, a stranger, a foreigner and it was definitely an intense, emotional rollercoaster ride. I would be the happiest person in the world one second and an hour later I’d be in tears. The internet helped a lot, knowing that my family were only a call away, but nevertheless the separation from my family and friends was the hardest part of moving to New Zealand.

In South Africa, I always thought of myself as an emotionally strong individual, but now I realise that I was hiding behind the con-

fidence of my work, friends, family and the comforts around me.

I faced my challenges head on. I was part of the Salvation Army Church in Benoni, South Africa, so my first port of call was to keep that habit alive and joined the Salvation Army in Ashburton, where I was welcomed with open arms and felt familiar in my surrounding.

I joined the Red Cross, I wanted to be part of a team of “good people doing good things” and improve the lives of people less fortunate than me. I assist Jan at the Coldstream old age home playing housie (bingo) and once again I was out there talking to people, laughing and sharing stories.

I also became part of Neighbourhood Support, assisting the lovely Christine Richards.

This way I meet and talk to the rest of the neighbours around me. I have also applied to become a volunteer for IHC to be friends with people with special needs.

I have tried to see as much as I can from the Aviation Museum, walking Holly my dog in the magical domain with its beautiful flowers, birds and ducks, the art gallery, going shopping, having a picnic at Lake Hood on a lovely warm day, and last but not least, Wakanui Beach, where I have sat and stared at the crashing waves and had the privilege of seeing wild dolphins.

I have been very lucky in friendship and most of these new friends feel like I have known them for ages.

There are times in your life where people stand up to be counted, a very special lady called Pat Cannan is one of those people.

Pat met me not long after I came to Ashburton. She took me into her care, guided me, introduced me to Nosh where we have spent many hours chatting and drinking coffee. Pat became like a gran to me, which felt that I had family.

Another lady who needs a special mentioned is Beverley Watts, who lives across the road from me. I hear from her almost every day and we chat about the most oddest interesting things you can imagine, I am proud to be able to call her my pal.

My mum always said that if I made one friend then I am the luckiest person in the world so I am blessed to have two, Beverley and Pat in my life.

I have a few South African friends (Nina, Nora-Ellen and Warren, Keith and Janine, Leigh-Anne and Allan) and it is always lovely to get together and have a traditional Braai and speak the South African slang that we all so dearly miss.

You never have enough friends so I joined a group of ladies that get together once a week

for a 5km walk/talk and a well-deserved coffee.

My heart will always beat to an African drum. I bleed green and gold. There are thousands of things that my sole aches to see – the magnificent sunset while having a summer sundowner (glass of refreshing sauvignon blanc). Braai (BBQ), the Highveld thunderstorm where you stand on your patio, just watching lightning strike through the sky and feeling the thunder shudder through your body, the South African slang to name a few: Isit, ja-nee, robot (traffic lights), yebo (Yes), lekker (good), now-now (time explanation) Ag shame (express condolences), Just-now (time explanation) Eish (shock, surprise) Biltong and my favourite jislaaik (expression of disbelief).

It is exciting coming to a new country; a whole new world opens up to you.

A few places I have been to in New Zealand are Auckland, Lake Taupo, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Akaroa, Lake Tekapo, Mt Hutt Ski Resort, Castle Hill, Fairlie, Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, Methven, Tai Tapu to mention only a few.

Next I need to get a job either in Christchurch or Ashburton, so that I can start my new adventure of residency.

At the moment I am unemployed. I have a three-year working visa and my plan is to apply for residency, which means that I need to find a job in my profession which is either a personal assistant or a property manager.

New Zealand is becoming my home with the things that I have done and the people I have met. The most important thing for me right now is for my family to become New Zealand residents. I would actually like to see a real-life Kiwi, visit a Hobbit hole, run up the steepest street in the world and to visit the glacier.

I have had the pleasure of meeting the playful kea and their desire to steal my windscreen wiper rubber, and my absolute favourite bird has to be the beautiful fantail (Piwakawaka).

Finally, an inspirational message from Nelson Mandela: The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying, one armed with the hope that he will rise even in the end. It always seems impossible until it’s done.

ABBA back in town Get out those flared jeans and be ready to dance like a queen, ABBA music is coming back to town.

Hot on the heels of our very own Variety Theatre Ashburton staging Mamma Mia! earlier this year, Australia’s own live ABBA tribute act will perform at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this coming weekend.

Thanks Carol from the community T

here’s an argument around that a town’s annual Santa Parade is a waste of time, and money.

But anyone who attended Ashburton’s own event on Saturday down East Street would have plenty of cause to disagree with the statement, because the turnout and participation was huge.

There were hundreds, probably thousands, of folk lining East Street and around Baring Square to take in the action and the view from the middle of the street as the procession made its way around the route was pretty humbling.

What it shows is that a good event will still bring the people –

and that this time of the year is a true opportunity to show a little good old-fashioned community spirit.

The variance of different floats and organisations who filled the slots in the parade was impressive – we had almost every corner of the district covered in one way or another.

It’s probably fitting here the efforts of the lady behind the magic, Carol Johns, is recognised.

Her tireless work to get things set and ready for the day and her organisation behind the scenes is unbelievable and this community is incredibly indebted to her services, not just for Saturday’s parade but everything else that she sinks her teeth into and helps put together.

On face value, something like the Santa Parade might seem quite an easy sort out – but you can guarantee yourself it won’t be and the days of stress and work leading up to the event must be intense.

So, to Carol – a big thank you

from all of us, you epitomise what is good in our community and it can only be hoped that we have your involvement for many more years to come.

This coming weekend will be the same.

Thousands will flock to the Oval at the Ashburton Domain for the resurrected Christmas in the Park.

The team behind the scenes there have been working tirelessly to get the show off the ground and the performers who will entertain everyone who comes through the gates have been doing the same.

On a slightly different topic, but keeping with the Christmas work

of people, it was sad to learn that Methven’s Frank Sandys wouldn’t be going ahead with his lights display this year.

Fore more than a decade the trip out to Frank’s place has been a real Christmas highlight for a lot of people in the Ashburton District and without that annual pilgrimage, the lead-up to Christmas is going to be a little different this year.

His work though, for the past 11 years, is just another prime example of someone going above and beyond for the community to provide enjoyment for many.

Beware Shane Jones’ briefcase of cash L

ast week the Government announced a $140 million package for the West Coast from Shane Jones’ Provincial Growth Fund.

That it took the South Island’s allocation from the fund into double figures for the first time is welcome.

It’s unacceptable that until a few days ago the entire South Island had received less than one per cent of the fund when our taxes have paid so much for it.

That’s the inherent danger when Ministers are given decision-making over where taxpayer money will be allocated, while also refusing to publish any information about requirements for how the money will be spent.

Northland remains the single biggest recipient of Shane Jones’ fund.

When I asked Jones why such a large proportion of the fund had gone North, he bluntly said that the mayors of other districts had been poor advocates.

Having spoken to many of them since those comments, most feel it’s more due to Mr Jones coming from Northland than any lack of advocacy on their part.

It isn’t just Jones, of course.

The Government has more Cabinet Ministers from Northland than from the entire South Island. It’s no wonder we’re missing out.

But what concerns me most isn’t that we lose out on a fair proportion of that $3 billion.

All the Government funding in the world can’t make up for economic growth if the policy settings aren’t right.

A recent example is in Taranaki, where the Government have essentially put 15,000 workers on notice by banning future offshore oil and gas exploration.

It’s a multi-billion dollar industry that accounts for a third of Taranaki’s economy. It will be choked to death over the next few years until all those jobs are lost.

Not surprisingly, Shane Jones has visited and offered a hundred million or so, but that cash

will never make up for the huge hit to their local economy.

What’s worse, is that the environmental reasons given by the Prime Minister don’t stack up.

The Government’s own expert advice says that the ban on gas exploration will increase carbon emissions in the medium term as it will make us more reliant on imported coal.

You can understand why Coasters are nervous, a $140 million injection while the Government considers what to do with coal mines on the West Coast.

Closer to home they’re getting the settings wrong too.

By pulling $5 billion out of the state highway network to put into CBD rail and cycle projects they’re putting all their eggs in the Auckland basket.

It means less money for roading upgrades in Mid Canterbury, pushing a second bridge over the Ashburton River into the nevernever and imposing a cut-price safety option for State Highway One. Independent economic analysis shows there are 500 job vacancies in the Ashburton district.

Employers are crying out for skilled workers and yet Immigra-

tion NZ are sending away existing employees who’ve been here for years and become part of our community.

Without access to workers the growth of our local businesses and farms is being constrained, which impacts on all of us.

Going into the last election Labour promised massive cuts to net inward migration of 20,000 – 30,000.

That would have a hugely negative impact on our region.

The Immigration Minister Iain Lees Galloway is promising to reveal new immigration settings “soon.”

It’s interesting to note that the Ashburton district is yet to receive a cent from the Provincial Growth Fund.

Given the Government’s habit of sending in Shane Jones with wads of taxpayer money to accompany bad news, perhaps we should be thankful for that.

Smoked chicken terrine

1 smoked chicken, skin removed 150g butter, chopped, at room temperature ½ C salted macadamias, chopped ¼ C crème fraîche ¼ C whole-egg mayonnaise ¼ C roughly chopped parsley 1 bunch chives, snipped 2 T wholegrain mustard 6 bagels, sliced into 3 Mini gherkins, to serve ■ Remove meat from chicken, discarding bones. Roughly chop meat. Place in a large bowl with butter, nuts, crème fraîche, mayonnaise, herbs, mustard and 1 Tbsp brandy (optional. Season to taste and mix well.

■ Spoon into 4-6 individual dishes. Cover with plastic wrap and chill overnight.

■ Preheat oven to hot, 200°C. Line an oven tray with baking paper.

■ Arrange bagel slices in single

Friends in high places A

small museum perched on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful Columbia River Gorge in Washington is the last place you’d expect to find more than 85 works by Auguste Rodin including plaster studies, watercolour sketches, bronzes and terracottas.

The Maryhill Museum of Art’s collection features some of the French sculptor’s most famous pieces of art, including The Thinker, The Burghers of Calais and portions of The Gates of Hell. The Rodin display is just one part of an eclectic collection that ranges from ornate chess sets and small carved ivory crucifix figures from all over the world, to a varied collection of Native American art.

We were visiting the museum on a shore excursion as part of Un-Cruise Adventures’ Four Rivers of Wine and History cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers of Oregon and Washington.

We’d woken that morning to find our replica steamship, the SS Legacy, docked at the charming town of The Dalles on the Oregon side of the Columbia River; we’d have to cross back into Washington state for the day’s activities.

As we wound our way through the dry, sagebrush-covered landscape on our way to the top of the hill, a half-hour drive from The Dalles, we learned more about the remarkable history of the man who founded it. Samuel Hill was a successful businessman best remembered for his advocacy of paved roads in the area at the beginning of last century.

Hill – contrary to urban myth he’s not the Sam Hill referenced in the popular expression – had originally planned to start a Quaker community named for his daughter Mary, and the threestorey Beaux Arts mansion was supposed to be a private home, but he ran into financial and logistical problems and building stalled in 1917.

Luckily, he’d made a few important friends over the years, including dance pioneer Loie Fuller, who convinced him to turn the

The Maryhill Museum of Art’s collection features some of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s most famous pieces of art. building into an art museum and who happened to be a personal friend of Rodin; Queen Marie of Romania, who donated treasures such as Eastern Orthodox icons and many personal effects and palace furnishings; and San Francisco sugar heiress Alma Spreckels, who saw the project through after Hill’s death in 1931 to its opening in 1940.

Spreckels was also responsible for one of the jewels in the museum’s collection, the 68cm-tall mannequins wearing authentic mid-1940s haute couture from the

Theatre de la Mode.

This was a touring exhibition created to help revive the French fashion industry after World War Two and raise money for war relief.

The original sets may not have survived but the clothes and figures are really something special.

Another highlight is the collection of historic photographs by semi-professional photographer Thomas Leander “Major Lee” Moorhouse, an Oregon businessman and former mayor of Pendleton who worked as an Indian

agent on the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

One of his favourite subjects was Dr Whirlwind, a Cayuse medicine man, who loved any excuse to get kitted up for a picture in elaborate head-dresses and native jewellery, as well as Native American trading blankets, normally owned by Moorhouse.

At the museum you’ll also find European and American paintings, a native plant garden and a sculpture park with stunning views of the river gorge below.

On the way to or from the

museum, make sure to stop at Hill’s near-exact replica of Stonehenge, built in the early 1900s as a memorial to the local Klickitat County soldiers who fought in World War One. Dedicated in 1918, it was the first World War One memorial to be built in the United States. Hill’s gravesite is nearby.

He may have never had the chance to live at Maryhill, but thanks to the buildings he left behind, Hill cleverly ensured that his legacy will last for generations.

Nationals spot goes begging

Big guns fire up on Ashburton courts Ashburton’s Flynn Ness prepares to make a return against his opponent in the Christchurch premier men’s grade tennis competition, which was played in Ashburton on Saturday. It was the second season in a row the Christchurch competition had moved its play to the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre for a day, and Ness was one of three Mid Cantabrians playing, along with James Watt and Sam Bubb. All three lost their matches on Saturday as Waimari beat Elmwood 4-2, Cashmere beat Edgeware 6-0 and Te Kura/ Hagley beat Bishopdale on a countback of sets 8-7. Ness and Watt were Christchurch premier grade regulars while Bubb was filling in for a team and had an extra busy day on court, having already played in the Mid Canterbury Tennis A grade competition PHOTO ROBYN HOOD 011218-RH-102 earlier in the day.

Dubai drought broken Despite suffering a yellow card and four of their 13 players being out due to injury in the Cup final of the Dubai Sevens, the All Blacks Sevens have beaten the odds to win their first tournament of the series.

New Zealand now sit at the top of the HSBC World Sevens Series standings on 22 points after beating USA 21-5 in the final of their first tournament of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Cup final yesterday.

Going into the final it was advantage USA with the Kiwi side having played a very heavy defensive semi-final against England and their injured list including Scott Curry, Akuila Rokolisoa, Sam Dickson and Regan Ware.

But those left on the field in the black jersey proved heart, efficiency and power to break the nine year drought and win Dubai in front of a 50,000-strong crowd with tries being awarded to Tone Ng Shiu, Dylan Collier and Ngarohi McGarvey-Black.

The men’s victory makes it a double double win for New Zealand at the Dubai Sevens after the women’s side took out their tournament the day before.

The first try of the men’s final went to New Zealand with Ng Shiu powering through USA the tackles to get the first points on the board, successfully coverted by the accurate Andrew Knewstubb. They had the halftime lead of 7-0.

Down to six players due to a yellow card for against Luke Masirewa for a high tackle in the second half, USA took the opportunity to get their first points on the board with Stephen Tomasin scoring their first and only try of the game. The score sat at 7-5 with just four minutes to go.

However, a knock-on by USA allowed New Zealand to take control with Collier out-pacing his opposition to score another try for New Zealand.

Down 14-5, USA were seen to have eight players on the field, giving a penalty to New Zealand at halfway and allowing another opportunity for New Zealand.

That opportunity was taken

by McGarvey-Black who secured

the final try of the match and sealed the 21-5 win for New Zealand – their first tournament win in Dubai since 1999.

Meanwhile the Black Ferns continued to prove they are the world’s best team in women’s sevens by winning their fifth World Series tournament in a row. New Zealand took a third-minute lead and never trailed in a 26-14 win over Canada in the Dubai final.

That followed the Black Ferns’ triumph at the season-opening Glendale Sevens in Denver, Colorado, in October.

After taking out the last three tournaments of last season’s World Series, it means the New Zealand women have now won 30 matches in a row.

Mid Canterbury will not feature at this year’s national rugby sevens tournament after losing all of their games and failing to qualify at Saturday’s South Island qualifying tournament in Timaru.

With six men’s teams taking part and only the top five qualifying to go to the nationals in Tauranga, it all came down to the final game of the day for Mid Canterbury at Alpine Energy Stadium.

Having lost to a clinical South Canterbury 19-5 they needed to beat Southland in their last game to qualify for the nationals, but they lost 31-14.

The tournament was played in a round robin format and Tasman went through unbeaten with Otago finishing runners-up and Canterbury third.

Mid Canterbury came close to downing one of the bigger unions, leading Canterbury 19-7 at half time in their third game of the day, Mid Canterbury coach Ian Patterson said.

“We were unlucky to probably not have one more on the board too, but from the kick-off they scored and from the next kick-off there was a bit of a ricochet that we thought was a knock on and it went straight to their guy and they scored again,” Patterson said.

Mid Canterbury eventually went down, just missing out on upsetting Canterbury for the second year in a row at the tournament.

Mid Canterbury had started the tournament with a loss to Tasman, and lost a player for the day to injury three minutes in, before taking on Otago.

“We hit our straps against Otago in the first half and had them in real trouble.

“But the bounce of the ball didn’t go our way at times, and we didn’t handle kick-offs as well as we could’ve at times,” Patterson said.

Patterson said there were positives for Mid Canterbury. Loan player from Southbridge Jale Masi was outstanding, as was Tololima Savaiinaea, and with four players in the squad aged under 20 the tournament had been good for experience and they’d be able to build on that next year.

Patterson said Mid Canterbury had a good track record at sevens so it was disappointing to miss out, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort.

“The boys were a bit disappointed, obviously, but I think overall they can be satisfied with their performance,” he said.

A seven-man Tech Stags side got the job done against Lauriston when Mid Canterbury Cricket’s open grade Pritchard Shield competition resumed after a four week break on Saturday.

It was the fourth round, but only the second actual game, of this season’s Pritchard Shield – with rounds two and three having been rained out, either side of a long weekend break – and with only four teams in the competition this season it meant Saturday’s games were a repeat of round one.

While Coldstream repeated their result from round one in

beating Methven by six wickets to shoot to the top of the table, Tech defied the odds to turn the tables on defending champions Lauriston.

Arriving at Lauriston with only seven players, the Stags batted first and were all out for just 61 off 20 overs, with Jason Morrison the only batsman to reach double figures for his side, top scoring with 23.

Scott Morgan was the pick of Lauriston’s bowlers, taking 4/6 off seven overs, and his side was definitely in the box seat at the half way point.

Three players short in the field and with depleted bowling stocks, the Stags pulled off the

unthinkable though, rolling an 11-man Lauriston side for just 55.

Lauriston lost wickets at regular intervals but were still looking good at 42/7, only needing 19 runs to win with three wickets in hand.

But Morrison and Des Kruger combined to pick up those three final wickets with Lauriston still six runs shy of the target.

Bevan Richan and Scott Maher were joint top runs scorers for Lauriston, both getting 10 For Tech, Bevan Ravenscroft finished with 3/18, William McKee took 3/13, and Morrison finished off a fine day with 2/7.

Meanwhile up the road in Methven, the home side got off

to a cracking start against Coldstream, with 50 runs on the board before Davey Maw fell for 46 just after drinks.

From there, the wheels well and truly fell off and Methven were suddenly in trouble at 68/8.

Lewis McDonald helped steady the ship and produced 45 valuable runs as Methven scrambled through to a respectable total of 124.

Coldstream’s reply got off to a good start too, with Sean Mulligan (56) and Gary Cheema (16) combining for an opening partnership of 60, and the visitors sailed through to the target with relative ease, losing just four wickets along the way.

The brilliance of Ben Smith knows no bounds. The 32-year-old is one of the oldest players in the current All Blacks squad but that didn’t stop him from putting in the most time on the field in 2018. Smith played 15 games for the Highlanders and 12 tests for the All Blacks this year totalling 2120 minutes on the field. That’s an average of 78.5 minutes a game. Smith played 928 minutes of test rugby this year, missing only Japan and Italy (though he still got time on the field as a waterboy in Rome).

Sharks sign Johnson Kiwi superstar Shaun Johnson has been given a chance to secure his legacy after signing a three-year NRL deal with Cronulla. Johnson was spotted meeting with coach Shane Flanagan plus senior players Wade Graham and Andrew Fifita before officially putting pen to paper on a long-term deal. Not only does it give Johnson security on his future, it gives the Sharks a sliver of light after a horror two weeks.

Historic bronze medal for New Zealand girls New Zealand made history yesterday by claiming the bronze medal at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Canada 2-1 at the Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo.

Leon Birnie’s side became the first New Zealand team to claim a medal at any FIFA tournament.

New Zealand got off to a fantastic start when they scored twice in the opening 13 minutes through a Grace Wisnweksi double, but Canada got within striking distance when Lara Kazandjian scored a stunning solo goal in the second

half and New Zealand held on for a historic win.

Birnie said the bronze medal capped off an incredible tournament for his young team.

“Who would have thought?” said Birnie following the game.

“We came over here and we had a dream to get out of the group.

“We made history by doing that and then got into the semi-finals and created more history and now we have just got a bronze medal in a World Cup. “How good are these players?

Whips are cracking

Methven horseman Ricky May grabbed his fifth win in one of his home track features, the Methven Green Mile when he piloted A G’s White Socks to success yesterday.

The champion driver played the perfect waiting game with the Greg and Nina Hope-trained runner who came from last to win the race for the second year in a row.

While admitting to being a littler nervous about how the race panned out, May knew he had a horse with plenty of power in front of him.

“People probably forget just how good he is sometimes,” May said.

“He had a really interrupted preparation leading into the Cup, but seems to be back to somewhere near his best.

“That was pretty impressive to win today, especially from where he was and the fact that they went pretty slow up front.”

A G’s White Socks’ second win in the race meant he joined Second Wind (2009), Tennis Ball (2010) and Ellmer Hanover

(2012) as winners for May in the December feature.

May and the Hope combination were supposed to feature heavily in the following race, the Trotters Green Mile with Everybody Knows, but they had to settle for fifth as their lot as former Dominion Handicap winner Amaretto Sun ran his rivals into the grass for up-and-coming young driver, Sheree Tomlinson.

A recent winner of the Australasian Young Drivers Series in Queensland, Tomlinson blasted

away from a wide draw off the mobile gate and found the front and was able to dictate terms from there before doing enough to hold off the late finish of Ronald J. Amaretto Sun is trained by her grandfather, Ken Ford.

It capped off a huge couple of weeks for the Tomlinson and Ford family, who were victorious in the Dominion Handicap with Marcoola during Cup Week and then Sheree’s success in Australia.

New Zealand’s representatives were to the fore on the first night of the Inter Dominion Series in Victoria on Saturday night, winning three of the five heats across both divisions.

Wins from Spankem and Cruz Bromac gave New Zealand’s tiny pacing contingent the perfect start to the Inter Dominion pacing series while Speeding Spur was never troubled winning his first heat in the first trotters’ series since 2012.

Both Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen-trained pacers scored impressive heat wins, in vastly different fashions, and Pat’s Delight finished second behind Spankem in the first heat of the pacing series for trainer Cran Dalgety, which meant the New Zealand team scored the highest amount of points available to them on night one.

Spankem proved too tough after sitting parked for the last lap of a stop-start affair, getting the upper hand over leader My Alpha Rock while classy pacer Tiger Tara flashed up for third.

Rasmussen is expecting an even better version of the four-year-old to be seen later in the series.

“I just know he is a little chubby, so the run will do him good,” she said in a television interview.

“He is a little bit of an underrated little guy. He has been off the scene and he is a fair little horse.

“He can stay a bit and he has got a bit of speed, so whatever presents itself he can put himself in to the race.”

Speeding Spur announced he had returned to Victoria in emphatic style with a crushing win.

The New Zealand trotter of the year led easily off the mobile arm and driver Josh Dickie was allowed to set terms to suit.- NZHN

Give hope to those with nothing this Christmas.

Many of us are thinking now about how we’d like to celebrate Christmas and maybe what we’d like to be under the tree for our families—like a new phone, toys for the children, a holiday in the sun or just some quality family time.

For teenager Naz, all he wanted for Christmas was a house for him and his family to live in, so they wouldn’t have to sleep in a van. And food, beds and things that many of us take for granted.

Christmas for Naz and his family wasn’t a time of celebration, but a time of struggle—to have food on the table, to pay rent and other bills, to keep the family together when hope seemed lost.

When Naz and his family turned to The Salvation Army at their greatest time of need, we were able to help get them back on their feet.

Support from Kiwis like you meant the family was able to receive a Salvation Army food parcel, ensuring they had enough food to get by. Budgeting sessions also allowed them to manage their

Allenton picked up a 4-2 win over Methven in the Mid Canterbury Tennis A grade competition on Saturday to finish the season’s first round as the only unbeaten team.

Allenton’s win at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Saturday was set up by the top order, with number one Sam Bubb combining with Andre van Rooyen at two to convincingly beat Eddie Dargue and Peter Kirwan in the top singles 6-0 6-1.

Bubb then went on to defeat Dargue 6-1 6-0 in the top singles contest, while van Rooyen had a tougher time in the two singles against Kirwan but eventually got

there in a third set super tie-break 6-3 2-6 1-0 (10-4).

Allenton’s fourth win of the day came in the other doubles match, with Dianna Leonard and Ben Johnson downing Henry Ross and Josh Jones in a third set super tiebreak 6-4 4-6 1-0 (10-6), but Ross and Jones turned the tables in the singles matches.

That was where Methven picked up their two wins, with Ross beating Leonard in the three singles 6-2 6-2 and Jones beating Johnson at four, 6-0 6-1.

Meanwhile, Fairton picked up only their second win of the first round, beating Tinwald 5-1.

There were two feature games in that match-up, with the first being the top singles, which pit-

ted multiple-time Gala Cup singles winner Rhys Cromie against competition newcomer Cameron McCracken, who was yet to drop a singles match in the Mid Canterbury competition.

But Cromie changed that, beating him in three sets 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 1-0 (10-8).

In the top doubles Cromie paired with Tyler Leonard to take on McCracken and Tyler’s dad, Peter Leonard, and the match was won by the Cromie and Leonard pairing also in three sets 6-4 6-7 (7-5) 1-0 (12-10).

Father and son then faced off in the two singles and it was Tyler who came out on top in a hard fought battle, beating his dad 3-6 6-3 1-0 (10-6).

The second doubles match between Tinwald’s Luca Landells and Andrew Landells, and Jayden Cromie and John Leslie, wasn’t played with the Landells pairing having to default.

But Andrew Landells did pick up Tinwald’s only win, beating Leslie in the four singles 6-0 6-1, while the other singles match saw Jayden Cromie down Luca Landells 6-1 6-2.

In the day’s other A grade match, Hampstead proved far too slick for Southern, winning the clash 6-0.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Hampstead though with the tie featuring two three setters.

Aidan Mitchell and Connor Brosnahan beat Southern’s Ja-

son Feutz and Gareth Evans 7-5 4-6 1-0 (10-5) in the top doubles, while Mitchell also needed a decider in the top singles against Feutz, getting home 4-6 7-6 1-0 (10-4).

At two, Evans beat Brosnahan 6-3 6-4.

The lower doubles went the way of Hampstead’s Michael Kerr and Erin Connelly-Whyte 6-4 6-2 against Mathieu Lucas and Aidan Watt. Kerr than went on to beat Lucas 6-2 6-0 at three, and Connelly-Whyte beat Watt 6-4 6-4 at four.

In A reserve action on Saturday Southern/Wakanui picked up a 4-2 win over the Methven Diamonds, while the Allenton Wekas beat Hampstead 6-2.
