Presbyterian Support Ashburton is withdrawing its request for help from the Ashburton District Council to provide social housing.

The council last week requested more information from the organisation after it sought a section of fee-simple land so a share-facility home for up to five older people could be built.

Presbyterian Support Upper South Island regional manager Jackie Girvan said yesterday she did not believe providing further information towards a business

case as suggested would result in council support for the proposal.

She now planned instead to work with a group of interested people in the community. Such a facility would fill a need for adequate and affordable social housing in Ashburton.

She said Presbyterian Support, the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul were regularly dealing with people needing help with housing in Ashburton.

Additionally, there were older people who felt anxious living on their own who would be suitable for a share-facility home, which could be built on a scaled-

down Abbeyfields model.

“It’s not only about cost, it’s about safety and social isolation as well,” she said.

Girvan said she appreciated the council giving consideration to the proposal and preparing a preliminary report, and also the suggestion of granting temporary use of either its house at 1 Alford Forest Road or other premises.

She was unsure of the appropriateness of 1 Alford Forest Road for older people, but considered it could work for emergency or temporary housing, and could discuss this with the council at a later stage.

Opinion divided over i-Sites’ future

While the decision on the future of the Methven and Ashburton i-Sites does not rest in the hands of the Ashburton District Council, mayor Donna Favel questions whether as a concept they’ve run their course.

At the time they were formed there was high demand, but times had changed and many people had moved to mobile technology and smart technology to find information, Favel said.

“As a council we provide a grant to Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC) who has a very experienced board and they’re much closer to the sector than we are.”

And that meant the board could make tough decisions around the centres’ future based on hard data, she said.

Yesterday the EMC board announced the potential closure of both centres, citing falling visitor numbers and income.

The sites provided information to locals and visitors and while they assisted with transportation bookings these could also be made online or through some travel agents, EMC general manager Bruce Moffat said.

Across both sites four fulltime and four part-time staff would be affected if the centres closed.

The closure of the i-Sites was recommended by consultant Peter Winder after he undertook a section Section 17A review of EMC at the request of its funder, the council.

He suggested the money used to support the sites could be better used promoting the district in other ways.

I-Sites might not make money, but they still have a valuable role to play in ensuring tourists make the most of their stop over in a town, says Methven businessman Graeme Mangin.

While he was at the helm of Methven Travel, Mangin’s business acted as the provider of information on tourist attractions in the area and he says the need to have a central point for information still remains today.

“They’re still relevant. If you

want people to visit the district and find out where to go you have to have them. Closing would be very short sighted,” he said.

“They’re an essential service but you can’t run them to make a profit, that’s impossible. You have to have a special mind set to run an i-Site,” he said.

If the two centres close, the Ashburton District Council could be left with space to fill in the Methven Heritage Centre and with a building that’s looking for a new use in Ashburton.

Currently the Ashburton building is also head office for Experi-

ence Mid Canterbury after the organisation relocated from its previous home in the Ashburton Event Centre.

Ashburton District Council commercial manager Colin Windleborn said he would be checking the resource consent tagged to the building to see if there were any conditions around its use.

Ashburton’s i-Site began its life as a small information centre in what was a ‘new build’ historic cottage, constructed as part of Ashburton’s centennial celebrations.

It opened for business in 1978 on the East Street green.

This was replaced by a building donated by the Kiwanis Club that served the district well for many years but eventually it could no longer cope with the growing number of tourists accessing its services.

The council decided to build a new centre, but its location created huge debate.

While many people wanted the new centre to be located on the site of its predecessor, just as many wanted the district’s information to be provided out of the unused

Ashburton Railway Station.

The central town site won and in late June 2005, Prime Minister of the time, Helen Clark, declared it officially open for business.

The Kiwanis donated building gained a new life as a youth base at the Hampstead Rugby Club.

As its business grew, the new building also grew with an addition made to its northern end.

Methven Travel was an early caretaker of tourist information in Methven until a stand alone i-Site was established in 2004.

The business recently moved into the Methven Heritage Centre.

With construction under way on a commercial and retail block on Cass Street, another step is being taken in restoring the heart to inner Ashburton.

The complex on the corner of Cass and Burnett streets is a joint venture between the Carr Group and Tavendales as Burnett Land Holdings and while the first tenants are unlikely to move in until the new year, marketing of retail and office space is already yielding positive results, Craig Carr said.

“Tavendales will occupy a significant piece of the top floor and we’re working with some key tenants and with options around a cafe,” he said.

Initially the building was planned to be three levels, with apartments on the top floor.

That’s now been amended to two levels to ensure the new structure merges seamlessly with its neighbour, the revamped Gabites building, Carr said.

Like any development, starting construction becomes a juggling act between knowing you have space let and wanting to have

something visible on the ground.

The Ashburton experience is generally that tenants tended to come when a complex was near completion, he said.

“There’s definite interest with people looking, but it’s always about timing.

“People looking to come to Ashburton look more short term rather than taking a long term view on a property.

“At the end of the day you can sit and agonise over it or get on with it.”

Rakaia cropping farmer Andrew Harcourt may not think much of his photography skills but they recently won him the best overall photo in a competition held as part of the New Zealand Young Farmers grand final weekend.

A member of the Pendarves club, Harcourt took the photo earlier this year driving an old Ford tractor through a paddock of brassica on the family farm.

“I’m a very average photographer really,” he said.

“I was just out shifting the irrigator and thought it looked quite good, so I got out my iPhone and took a photo.

“I probably only take about 10 photos a year.

“I’m definitely more of a farmer than a photographer.”

Harcourt entered his photo in the landscape category, which it won. It then went up against the winners of other categories, in-

cluding people/animals and New Zealand Young Farmers activities, to find an overall winner, a title Harcourt can now proudly claim for Pendarves.

He received $50 for winning the landscape category, and another $150 as overall winner.

It was a case of better late than never for Harcourt, who will pass the young farmer age limit of 31 years old in another year or so, having been a member for more than 10 years.

Design work is by local architects Chilton and Mayne while Bradfords is the lead construction contractor.

As one of the district’s larger employers, with its head office in Ashburton, Carr said the developers wanted to keep contracts on the build as local as possible.

Council staff urged to kick sugary drinks habit

Ashburton District Council staff who rely on a liquid sugar fix to power through their day may have to kick the habit or bring their own.

The local government sector voted in favour of a remit to develop a Sugar Sweetened Beverages Policy recently, so now the council will consider development of such a policy for its workplaces and facilities.

And it is likely one of the first things to go will be a fizzy drink machine in the council offices’ staff room.

Just what it would mean for drink machines in council facilities such as EA Networks Centre would also be up for discussion.

In the foyer of the sports facility there are vending machines for visitors, with items including water, juice, soft drink and snacks.

Mayor Donna Favel said she had already been talking to chief executive Andrew Dalziel on how such a policy would look for the council, and the finer details of it would be worked out over time.

Council staff would not miss their drink machine, as suggested by the Guardian’s efforts to try and find someone in the building who used it.

“I don’t know of anyone who really uses it, everyone’s much

more into tea and coffee,” a council spokesperson said.

However, the vending machines at EA Networks Centre are popular.

Sports facility manager Steve Prescott said children used the machines while taking a break from their sports.

They usually chose the healthy

options, and as long as they were educated about their choices, he did not see the availability of soft drink as a problem.

“I think if the kids are active, I don’t think it hurts them that much,” Prescott said.

The Sugar Sweetened Beverages Policy would be unlikely to meet unanimous approval, with councillor Stuart Wilson having previously told fellow councillors it would be “social engineering”.

Councillor Russell Ellis would be among those supporting it, due to the health effects of sugary drink consumption such as dental decay in children.

“It’s like all decisions, if you take the easy option and do nothing, well we carry on the way we are,” Ellis said.

Ellis was also in the majority of two-thirds of New Zealanders, shown in a recent poll, who wanted central government to introduce a sugary drinks tax with money going to childhood obesity programmes.

For anyone who was ill, it was far better to make a call sooner, rather than waiting until symptoms worsened and hospital became their only option, Nightingale said.

Two teenage girls have had their charges upgraded to murder in connection with the death of 54-year-old Hamilton man Norman Kingi. A 15-year-old and 13-year-old appeared in the Hamilton Youth Court yesterday on one count each of murder.

The charges had been upgraded from aggravated wounding. The 15-year-old also faces a charge of unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle. A 12-year-old is being dealt with through Youth Aid. The duo, whose details are suppressed, were represented strongly by family and friends who remained silent throughout their appearances.

Fundraiser for children A long-time family friend has started a Givealittle fundraising campaign to help the four children of slain Northland woman Natanya Campbell. Cheryl Arnold, of Auckland, said being a close family friend she wished to offer assistance to the girls. The “Campbell Girls future” account was set up on Sunday and already 31 people had donated $1623.

Memorial for sailor Three months after his disappearance, family and friends of a sailor who went missing in Samoa have honoured the life of their son and brother. Kilino Joseph Lemafoe Tua, a sailor in the Royal NZ Navy, travelled to the island nation in late April for what was meant to be a short holiday in paradise. But the trip turned into a nightmare. He was last seen on April 29. Samoan authorities have said it is thought Tua was either struck by a rogue wave or fell into the ocean.

Hinds gets to keep diving platform

Hinds pool users are happy they will still be able to leap from a diving tower at the facility, despite toughening health and safety regulations.

Pool volunteer Alison King said there had been concern the Ashburton District Council-owned pool would have to close the platform, the only remaining one of its kind in the district.

However, a council health and safety representative visited the pool and they had agreed to make it safer instead.

“To be fair we have never had any accidents with that diving board,” King said.

“The kids are pretty good with it, they know they are not supposed to jump in if there is someone underneath them.”

It would be made safer by welding bars at the top, to help prevent users falling off.

The work would be done prior to the pool opening this coming summer. Additionally, cracks in the ground concrete would be painted yellow, to help prevent people stubbing their toes or tripping.

“If we want to keep the pool open, we have to comply,” King said.

Get creative, apply for funds Local community groups with an arts or cultural focus are being encouraged to get their applications in to the Ashburton District Council, following the opening of the creative communities grants yesterday.

Groups will have until the end of August to submit their application, with funds for successful applicants being awarded in October 2017.

The creative communities grant aims to support artistic and cultural projects in the community, which can involve anything from theatre, dance and music to literary arts, crafts and performing arts.

The scheme recognises the unique place of local arts projects in communities and is assessed by a local committee who have an extensive background in the district’s varied arts community.

“There are many dedicated groups in our community working to improve and preserve our natural and built environment, and this funding is aimed at supporting those efforts,” council community development adviser John

Hobbs said. “If you think you have a project that aligns with this work, we want to hear from you.”

Council changed the structure and processes for its grants and funding last year, which means there are now two funding rounds for biodiversity and heritage grants.

The second round of funding has been added in recognition that the nature of these projects is often seasonal.

Applicants can now apply for funding for spring and summer-based projects.

Everyone’s a winner at pie comp

When it comes to making pies, exAshburtonian Jason Danielson is an expert.

He learned his trade at Sims’ Bakery in Ashburton and later transferred those skills to Queenstown and then to Wanaka.

And that’s where he plies his trade today as part-owner and chief baker at Wanaka’s Wholesale Bakery producing more than 60,000 pies each week.

His bakery might be a huge pie producer, but that doesn’t mean those pies fit the mass produced image, he said.

And his placings in this year’s Bakel Pie competition bear that out.

The business took out a silver in the commercial section for a mince and cheese pie and added to that with a ninth place in the steak section, seventh in steak and cheese and fifth in the chicken and vegetable section.

He’s a regular entrant in the competition and said the standard gets better and better every year.

“Usually the judges can narrow it down to four or five in a section.

This year they had 46 in the bacon and egg section and they said they found it so hard to find a fault to

get the numbers down,” Danielson said.

Each year there was a growing number of highly skilled Asian bakers who upped the ante in terms of quality and that was one of the keys in lifting the standard, he said.

The rewards from winning come in increased demand for product and no one knows that better than Danielson.

Last year he won a gold award for a broccoli, pumpkin and carrot pie in the vegetarian section.

“Before that we did about 200kg

of vegetables every two or three weeks; now it’s two tonnes.”

He’s anticipating the bakery will be chaos in the coming weeks as word about this year’s awards leaks out.

For him a good pie must have a good filling, but the bottom line in

quality is the pastry.

“You don’t get that right then you won’t get judged. It’s time that makes a good pastry, the time taken and getting the temperature right.”

For his bakery that means during the cold winter months heaters are running day and night to ensure an even 18 degrees in the factory.

While some bakers make a special batch of pies for the competition, with the large numbers going through his bakehouse, entries are just part of that day’s production run.

The baker’s world today is very different to when Danielson started out as an apprentice.

Then you simply made pies because you enjoyed making pies; today every ingredient has to be carefully listed.

“It’d be nice to make them for fun, it’s a challenge now but I still enjoy what I do,” he said.

Irrigation protesters take aim at CPW Protesters have spent 12 hours locked inside irrigation pipes in a bid to slow the construction of a water scheme in Canterbury yesterday.

Police arrived at the scene yesterday morning and shut the construction site after Greenpeace protesters locked themselves inside pipes and machinery, and blocked trenches being dug for the project.

Greenpeace says the Central Plains Water project near Hororata takes water from the Rakaia and will be used to expand intensive dairying in the area.

said officers were at the scene on Plantation Road at noon and that the protest was peaceful.

“There are some inherent health and safety risks at the worksite location,” Insp Cooper said.

Protest organiser Genevieve Toop says the group are taking a stand because big new irrigation schemes like Central Plains Water mean more cows, and more cows mean more sick rivers.

The group said it had been encouraged by a recent Supreme Court decision that’s halted work on the long-disputed Ruataniwha Dam project, which would

have created water for irrigation in the Hawke’s Bay. The Central Plains project is the largest of several irrigation schemes receiving funding from the Ministry for Primary Industries.

The project has a total construction cost of about $385 million and will provide water to about 60,000 hectares on the Canterbury Plains, according to its website.

“This is an enormous publiclyfunded irrigation scheme which will increase the dairy herd and pollute Canterbury’s rivers,” Ms Toop said.

Arrests in synthetic cannabis raids Canterbury police seized 114 bags of synthetic cannabis yesterday, after carrying out five search warrants across Christchurch.

Two women and three men

have been charged with possession of synthetic cannabis for supply. The bags seized had a total street value of $2300.

The Christchurch arrests come one day after Auckland police

seized about 3kg of synthetic cannabis and arrested four people during a series of raids, amid fears the drug may be linked to the deaths of eight people last month.

By Karen Sweeney Not even a day into the job and Jacinda Ardern’s ability to juggle a potential prime ministership and hypothetical children is coming under scrutiny.

The question about her desire to be a mother was raised just eight hours into her reign as Labour leader, following her promotion to replace Andrew Little on Tuesday morning.

Ardern, 37, has been open about the dilemma that many women feel they face in being made to choose between a career and a family.

She’s also made no secret of the fact she hopes one day to become a mother.

Ardern’s age – she describes herself as “youth adjacent” – has also been questioned by Act leader David Seymour who said it was “not credible” to have a 37-yearold potential prime minister.

Seymour is 34.

By contrast, Prime Minister Bill English was a 39-year-old father of six children aged between two and 13 when he first became op-

position leader in 2001.

Ardern took no issue with questions about juggling a career and motherhood when asked on TV3’s The Project on Tuesday night, but took issue when asked directly about her own plans on the same network’s The AM show on Wednesday morning.

Presenter Mark Richardson said it was a “legitimate question” and employers – in this case the New Zealand public – need to know from a woman they employ what their plans are for children in order to make future arrangements for maternity leave.

“It is totally unacceptable in 2017 to say that women should have to answer that question in the workplace,” Ardern fired back.

“If you’re asking the question around the time you’re making a decision around employment, you’re implying it’s going to have an impact on whether you’re going to employ that person or not.”

Human rights and employment laws protect pregnant women from discrimination in the workplace.

Queues hit holiday makers British holidaymakers have been enduring weeks of chaos at airports across Europe with queues up to four hours long after tougher border controls were imposed by the EU. Airports popular with UK tourists have seen queues stretching back hundreds of yards after stricter checks were imposed on entry and exit to the European “Schengen” area.

Stricken passengers looking forward to their holidays have been left unaware of the delays which have been ongoing for several weeks but have only came to light now.

The problems follow an EU clampdown on people of all nationalities entering or leaving the Schengen zone, the borderfree area which operates on the continent.

In the wake of terror attacks, it is understood passengers now have to be checked against a security database.

The changes mean waiting times have soared compared to previous summers, when British holidaymakers were waved through after officials checked the photo page of their passports.

Airlines for Europe (A4E), which represents airlines including British Airways and

Barcelona airport, Spain, where passengers faced hours of extra-long security queues because of tougher EU border checks.

PHOTO AP easyJet, said that some EU countries had not staffed their passport control areas to take the new rules into account – further exacerbating the delays.

Some airports in Europe still have slow computer systems, increasing the delays it was also reported.

Thomas Reynaert, of airline association A4E said: “Travellers face long lines and can’t get on their flights. Queuing for up to four hours has been the top record these days; airports like Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Lisbon, Lyon, Paris-Orly, Milan or Brussels are producing shameful pictures of devastated pas-

sengers in front of immigration booths, in lines stretching hundreds of metres.

“At some airports, flight delays have increased by 300% compared to last year – [Schengen] Member States must take the responsibility for this.”

A month after new rules were brought in, passengers were reportedly fainting in the long lines which formed at a popular tourist island’s airport.

Tory MP Andrew Bridgen told MailOnline: “UK travellers will have a sneaky suspicion that this is some kind of EU punishment. They are going to be thinking, what has changed?

“The only thing is that we are leaving the EU.” Bridgen said the economies of countries like Spain relied heavily on the inflow of tourists from the UK, warning that if people were not treated well they would simply go elsewhere.

A spokesperson for the UK’s Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) said: “ABTA is aware that new, stricter passport checks are resulting in longer queues at Palma airport which is already busy due to a significant increase in passenger numbers.

“Tour operators will ensure that customers get to the airport in plenty of time so that they are not in danger of missing their flights, however independent travellers will need to ensure that they factor these longer queuing times into their travel plans when flying in and out of the airport.”

The countries in the Schengen area are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Museum’s display corrected by 10-year-old The Natural History Museum has been forced to change a dinosaur display after a 10-yearold boy pointed out a mistake.

Charlie Edwards was enjoying a birthday sleepover at the world famous attraction when he noticed the error.

Charlie realised a silhouette display which was meant to represent an oviraptor – a small carnivore with a parrotlike beak – was in fact a completely different dinosaur.

Museum staff had mistakenly used a silhouette of a protoceratops, which was a sheep-sized herbivore.

Charlie told his parents

about what he had spotted but their initial reaction was uncertainty as they could not believe it would be the museum’s mistake.

But the passionate amateur palaeontologist refused to back down and after returning home Charlie’s family emailed The Natural History Museum to see if he was correct.

Jade was delighted to receive a reply confirming that Charlie’s instinct was spot-on.

Switching to artificial sweeteners to boost the impact of a weight loss diet is in fact counterproductive, new research suggests.

An Australian animal study published in journal Cell Metabolism found artificial sweeteners combined with a low carbohydrate diet increased the amount of calories consumed and led to weight gain in fruit flies.

The findings expand on previous research that suggested sweeteners affect the brain in ways that alter the regulation of appetite and perceptions of taste.

Researchers at the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre and School of Life and Environmental Sciences offered fruit flies diets with varying amounts of carbohydrate and sweeteners, and tracked resulting food intake.

Flies that consumed artificial sweeteners alongside a low carbohydrate diet

showed an immediate increase in food intake.

The increase varied according to the dose of sweeteners provided and was not observed in flies consuming unsweetened foods.

Lead author Associate Professor Greg Neely says there is a growing body of evidence that shows a “clear” connection between artificial sweeteners, hunger and food intake.

While the findings of the fruit fly study may not translate to humans, Associate Professor Neely says a systematic investigation is required to understand the full impact of artificial sweeteners on overall health.

“Distorting the perceived energy value of food, by manipulating sweetness through artificial means, has unanticipated consequences in these animal studies” Associate Professor Neely said.

Aust PM in bind over vote One of the Turnbull government’s most senior moderates has cautioned colleagues contemplating crossing the floor over same-sex marriage to think twice about the consequences.

Threats have been swirling around Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership, the coalition agreement with the Nationals, and conservatives defecting to the crossbench should backbenchers force a vote in parliament to allow same-sex marriage.

West Australian Liberal senator Dean Smith is working on a marriage equality bill while his lower house colleagues Trevor Evans, Tim Wilson and Warren Entsch have been discussing options with colleagues.

But cabinet minister Simon Birmingham, a moderate who has long supported marriage equality, issued a caution on Wednesday.

“It’s always been ... a right in the Liberal party for individual members to exercise their conscience from the backbench if they choose,” he told Sky News.

“But equally, it is, of course, a

Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull right that people should exercise carefully, with caution and with consideration for all of the consequences.”

The suggestion people might defect from the Liberals was “completely ridiculous”.

His warning was echoed by conservative MPs, including Ian Goodenough, who told The West Australian all members should consider party discipline and ensure they “look after the team”.

In September, at the end of the first sitting after the election, the government lost a series of procedural votes as Labour attempted to force debate of a royal commission into banks.

scite through. But be under no illusion, irrespective of what you call it, any form of plebiscite is dead, cremated and cannot be resurrected,” Entsch writes in News Corp Australia.

Minister Zed Seselja says that is nonsense, pointing to the government’s persistence over workplace relations laws.

“We didn’t turn around in that case and adopt Labour policy and nor should we in this case,” he told Sky News.

Queensland’s Liberal National Party president Gary Spence made a similar argument in a letter to members late on Tuesday after the party’s state conference passed a motion calling for a postal plebiscite.

“I am disappointed that views that do not accord with the party’s policy have been aired publicly,” he wrote.

Turnbull has reportedly called Evans and Senator Smith, urging them to support the government’s plebiscite policy.

“It’s a pretty straightforward issue,” he told WA radio station Triple M Albany.

In brief Opera House asbestos A union has placed a work ban on renovations at the Sydney Opera House after tests confirmed the presence of asbestos. The Electrical Trades Union is angry it wasn’t notified promptly of the seriousness of the discovery.

Building company Laing O’Rourke said a comprehensive asbestos management plan was in place.

“Work is continuing on site as normal,” it said in a statement.

“The existence of asbestos in original structures of the Opera House was always planned for as part of these major works, and we are taking every precaution and safeguard.”

Bus crash kills 30 About 30 people have been killed after a bus plunged into a steep ravine in Madagascar. The bus was transporting 120 young Christians travelling to an annual meeting in Mahajanga. The accident occurred near Ankazobe, about 90 kilometres from the capital. The driver made a mistake in changing gears while going uphill, and the bus plunged into a ravine 20 metres deep a police spokesman said. The engine then caught fire and the bus exploded. About 12 charred bodies were pulled out of the wreckage. Rescuers were still trying to extract other bodies from the bus. Some of the other victims died on the way to the hospital.

More than 80 people were injured.

iPhone ready for next step Apple’s iPhone may be ready for its next big act – as a springboard into “augmented reality”, a technology that projects life-like images into real-world settings viewed through a screen.

If you’ve heard about AR at all, it’s most likely because you’ve encountered Pokemon Go, in which players wander around neighborhoods trying to capture monsters only they can see on their phones.

AR is also making its way into education and some industrial applications.

Now Apple is hoping to transform the technology from a geeky sideshow into a mass-market phenomenon. It’s embedding AR-ready technology into its iPhones later this year, potentially setting the stage for a rush of new apps that blur the line between reality and digital representation

in new and imaginative ways.

“This is one of those huge things that we’ll look back at and marvel on the start of it,” Apple CEO Tim Cook told analysts.

Many analysts agree. “This is the most important platform that Apple has created since the app store in 2008,” said Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research.

There’s just one catch: No one can yet point to a killer app for AR, at least beyond the year-old (and fading) fad of Pokemon Go. Instead, analysts argue more generally that AR creates enormous potential for new games, home-remodelling apps that let you visualise new furnishings and decor in an existing room, education, health care and more.

Pakistan prime minister elected Pakistan’s lower house of parliament has elected veteran lawmaker Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as the country’s new prime minister, a loyalist of outgoing Nawaz Sharif, who was disqualified by the Supreme Court for concealing assets.

Abbasi, a member of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League party, got 221 votes in the 342-member National Assembly.

His closest rival Syed Naveed Qamar from the opposition Pakistan People’s Party secured 47 votes, according to Ayaz Sadiq, the National Assembly Speaker.

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, a lawmaker from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, founded by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, got 33 votes.

Hours later, Abbasi was sworn in to his office at the presidency palace in the capital, Islamabad.

President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath of office to him at a ceremony which was attended by leaders from the ruling party, diplomats, bureaucrats and senior military official.

Abbasi replaced the 67-yearold Sharif, who was disqualified by the top court late last week for concealing assets – specifically, that his son’s Dubai-based company listed a monthly salary for him.

Sharif claimed he never received any of that money.

Sharif’s party wants Abbasi to serve as an interim premier for 45 days or until Sharif’s younger brother, Shahbaz Sharif, the chief minister of Punjab province, wins a national assembly seat in a by-election.

An Afghan hospital official says an explosion inside a minority Shi’ite mosque in western Herat, on the border with Iran, has killed at least 20 people. The official, Dr Mohammed Rafique Shehrzad, said 20 bodies were brought to his Main Hospital in Herat city, the capital of western Herat province, soon after the blast shattered the late evening. Shi’ites are a minority in Afghanistan and have been threatened by the Islamic State affiliate that operates in the country’s east. No one immediately took responsibility for the attack on the mosque in Herat.

Will we miss the i-Sites?

D

ollars and cents often speak louder than words and, when push comes to shove, it’s money that’s the underlying reason our two i-Site centres are facing their demise.

But the lingering question still remains following news of their likely closure this week, and it’s whether we will actually miss them when they are gone?

Experience Mid Canterbury, who oversee the two sites in Methven and Ashburton, is acting on what would seem to be a smart business decision.

Their annual allocation from the Ashburton District Council can only stretch so far for the promotion of our district and when close to 40 per cent of the funding is going into the day-today operations within the two sites, you almost have to wonder why this hasn’t been touted earlier than it has.

That’s a whole lot of money that could be thrown into other promotional activities that could draw people to our wonderful region.

Of course, it was indicated that the main reasons behind the news was declining visitor numbers and a decrease in income – which are both viable, but only really tell half of the story.

In this day and age, the advancement of technology has played its part too.

People now have the ability to access all the information that is held in an information centre through the use of their mobile phone or device and they can do so without even getting out of their car or leaving their motel room.

So, when you break it all down and look at it objectively, the decision makes a whole lot of sense.

Where it will hurt is through the other functions of the i-Sites, the booking services for buses and the mountain in the winter, both valuable assets and one would hope plans will be put in place to see those services continue into the future.

As locals, we probably won’t feel the decision as much as what visitors to our region will, initially anyway.

But once everyone realises that the information they desire is already there and only needs to be accessed, it won’t be long before the i-Site is just something that was once there, but isn’t anymore.

Out with the old, in with the new – game on

hat do they say about insanity?

Something about doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results?

The Labour Party under Andrew Little was broken.

He tried, his caucus tried, everyone involved in the Labour Party tried to get the public to consider Little as a prime minister.

It didn’t work.

And, let’s be honest, they gave it a good nudge. Nudging for nearly three years is more than a decent effort.

If something isn’t working, what do you do? You change up your attack. Try something different. That’s what Labour did on Tuesday. Does it mean Labour is now problem-free and will cruise to victory on September 23? No. Not at all.

But following Little’s announcement he would step down as Labour leader and Jacinda Ardern’s acceptance to step up, the possibility of a Labour-led government come the end of September has increased significantly.

For Labour to become a real threat to National, they need to tighten things up on a number of fronts; mainly who they are and for what they stand, how they are commu-

Is Ardern ready? Probably not. But when in life are you actually ever fully prepared for anything?

Do you think Sir John Key or Helen Clark knew absolutely everything about everything and were prepared for the lot on day one in office? Please.

If you listen to the electorate and read into the polls there is undoubtedly a mood for change.

A recent Herald ZB Kantar TNS Survey found 17 per cent of voters were still undecided. That is no small amount.

The problem is, until now the alternative that has been on offer hasn’t been appetising (even in the slightest) to the vast majority of the country, and so you have 17 per cent unsure which way they will fall.

Labour changing things up now creates more of an opportunity for some of those 17 per cent to land their side of the fence.

To be fair, it could also repel some to the other side. But if the feedback I witnessed in the four hours of talkback Kerre and I did on the subject on Tuesday is anything to go by, this is a step in the right direction.

No more Little, and Ardern in his place has people excited. I know this will upset the policy wonks amongst us, but the populace like warm and personable.

As a wonk myself, I hope an approachable demeanour is not the only reason a person chooses to vote for a particular party, but it certainly warms them to it.

Time and time again we heard that this is why people liked Key. Ardern has this. Little never did.

Or at least it never translated.

And so it’s game on. Old and worn vs young fresh and new.

My money is still with the former, but if nothing else at least the race is going to be darn sight more interesting.

And as they say, a strong opposition makes for strong government. Entertainment and better governance: if only the first of every month delivered this much.

Potato psyllid solution disputed

A Chertsey potato farmer says a recent announcement about a breakthrough in controlling the tomato potato psyllid (TPP) is overstating the case.

Ross Hewson, who has around 350 hectares in potatoes, said a statement last week by Dr Charles Merfield, of the BHU Future Farming Centre, that research on the use of mesh crop covers “should be a massive boost for potato growers, consumers and the environment” was misleading.

Hewson said although there was a place for the mesh, it was only really practical to use it over small areas, as logistically there

were too many problems to make it useable on a larger scale.

Merfield presented the results of his research at the PotatoesNZ conference in Pukekohe on July 26.

He said a field trial comparing a “full monty” agrichemical regime against meshes with three different hole sizes showed an “astonishing” 40,250 per cent reduction in TPP numbers under mesh compared with insecticides.

“The result is utterly stunning, it is effectively complete control of TPP. In comparison, achieving complete control of any insect pest on crops with agrichemicals is nigh on impossible,” he said.

“That this can be achieved with a non-chemical approach is even

more heartening, as it also addresses the spectre of insecticide resistance.”

On top of the TPP control results, the mesh also created a microclimate that enhanced crop growth and yield, with the meshgrown potatoes showing a 12 per cent increase in total yield.

Merfield said another advantage was the cost, with the mesh much cheaper to use than agrichemicals.

However, that’s where Hewson disagreed.

He said while he did not deny that nesh was an effective way of controlling TPP in certain circumstances, to use it on a large scale was not practical.

Not only was the cost prohibi-

tive, there were also other logistical problems, such as ensuring irrigation systems worked effectively.

As far as Hewson was aware the mesh trials had been conducted over small areas, rather than the hundreds of hectares used by commercial operators. It was small-scale use that he saw the future of mesh.

“It does work, I’m not saying it doesn’t. We use it on small areas, high value seed. That’s where its use can be justified.

“I don’t want to pour cold water on the idea because the psyllid is a real problem that costs the industry a lot of money, but the way this is being talked up just doesn’t make commercial sense.”

The Ministry for Primary Industries is continuing its work to find out where the cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis is present and contain it to those farms.

The ministry is working to assure farmers with properties in the vicinity of the affected Van Leeuwen Dairy Group farms in South Canterbury that the control measures in place are sufficient to prevent the spread of the disease.

Its director of response, Geoff Gwyn, said the main way the disease can spread is through direct contact between cattle, such as nose to nose.

“All the other potential factors such as on equipment, clothing and footwear, effluent and vehicles present a comparatively low risk.

“We encourage farmers to pay attention to what are routine biosecurity measures such as on-farm hygiene, caution around stock movements and fencing stock back from neighbouring fence lines.

“It is natural for people to be worried, especially those directly affected and living close by – but we don’t want people to be unnecessarily concerned.”

Venison deal to diversify demand

A recent venison export deal will allow the industry get closer to its market, one of the men behind it says.

Mountain River, a vension marketer and exporter with a processing plant just out of Rakaia, has launched a range of novel grilling cuts through one of Sweden’s leading restaurant wholesalers, Menigo.

Marketing manager John Sadler said Mountain River has been active in Sweden for 20 years, but this launch was different to what the company has done in the past.

“Instead of working through an importer, we are now working directly with a distributor who is as enthusiastic as we are about New Zealand venison,” he said.

Menigo is a one-stop shop for food professionals with warehouses and food halls in Stockholm, Malmo and four other Swedish cities. It prides itself on providing products and services that are tailored to the requirements of each of its chef customers.

“I was first approached 18 months ago, by Richard Hofbauer, their meat buyer. He was looking for some restaurant-ready cuts at a good price point,” Sadler said.

“We invited him to New Zealand, showed him the industry and what we had to offer, and he liked what he saw. We then worked with Richard, our colleagues at the plant and Deer Industry NZ executive chef Graham Brown to look at options that might work for Menigo.

“Not only did we develop some novel shoulder and leg cuts which were launched in Sweden in May, it was also a great way for establishing a partnership. We’re now one of Menigo’s key suppliers.”

Sadler said one of the biggest advantages of the new deal was that it enabled the company to get closer to the market.

The company’s main market was food service or the restaurant trade and finding out what chefs wanted was important to developing that, he said, adding that restaurants worldwide were making do with fewer trained staff, so providing cuts that were ready to cook, requiring less butchery in the kitchen, were a growing trend.

would be needed at the company’s Rakaia processing plant.

“Restaurants are struggling to get staff, so if they can buy product in a more prepared form they will go with that.”

Working directly with a distributor rather than going through an importer had potential in other markets around the world, Sadler said.

Mountain River already works with a distributor in North America, which was its biggest market. It was also currently looking closely at China, particularly Shanghai, which Sadler described as a “sophisticated” market.

The whole idea was to increase delivery of venison into markets that were not already being covered, he said, thereby diversifying demand in terms of both location and season.

These farms will receive visits and stock checks but they are not currently subject to

Restricted Place Notices.

“They are being checked on a precautionary basis and at this time there is not a sufficient level of risk to require the imposition of controls,” Gwyn said.

To date 25 animals on the first affected farm have been euthanised by the farmer for welfare reasons. A further group of affected animals has been checked by a vet and is fit for transport to slaughter.

“People in the area will start to see stock movements and I understand this is something that is worrying local farmers. I’d like to reassure them that any risk from transporting cattle from the Van Leeuwen farms to processing plants has been assessed as negligible and is being managed. This movement of the stock is being permitted by MPI and vehicles will be cleaned and disinfected after use under MPI supervision.”

MPI has reinforced the message that Mycoplasma bovis poses no risk to human health or the safety of food products – meat or dairy.

“There is no reason to hold meat and milk from the affected farms back from processing.”

Gwyn said MPI is managing the situation with urgency because of the disease’s impacts on farm management, animal welfare and production.

“Ideally we’d like to contain it and get rid of it and that is our current focus.”

Eating grilled venison during the Swedish summer was also unusual, Sadler said, so chefs involved in the recent launch have had to be innovative about the dishes they were creating.

He said the quality of New Zealand farmraised venison was greeted with some surprise in Sweden, with comments like: “Wow, I didn’t think it would be so good”.

He said the Swedish distributor agreement was one that would benefit the deer industry overall, given it would strengthen market connections and diversify demand.

It was a view reinforced by Deer Industry New Zealand marketing manager Marianne Wilson.

“From an industry point of view this is a good diversification, creating more yearround demand for branded New Zealand farm-raised venison, outside the Eurozone.”

Jobless rate nears 8-year low New Zealand’s jobless rate fell near an eight-year low as participation dwindled, while at the same time employment fell. The kiwi dollar dropped on the figures.

The unemployment rate slipped to 4.8 per cent in the three months ended June 30, the lowest since December 2008, and down from 4.9 per cent in March, Statistics New Zealand said in its household labour force survey.

However, the participation rate shrank to 70 per cent from 70.6 per cent in March as more people left the labour force at the same time as the working-age population expanded.

New employment snapped six quarters of growth, shrinking 0.2 per cent in the quarter to 2.54 million, although it was still up 3.1 per cent from a year earlier.

While that missed economists’ expectations for a 0.7 per cent quarterly gain, it masked a shift from part-time work into full-time employment with full-time jobs rising 0.7 per cent in the quarter to 2 million and part-time falling 1.8 per cent to 536,000.

Total actual hours worked were

up 1 per cent in the quarter to 85,363 a week and the underutilisation rate, which measures the country’s potential labour supply and unmet need for work, fell to 11.8 per cent from 12.3 per cent.

The New Zealand dollar fell to 74.25 US cents from 74.67 cents immediately before the figures were released. The trade-weighted index declined to 78.09 from 78.49.

New Zealand’s labour market has been robust over the past 18 months as firms have been able to create new jobs for an expanding population in an economy underpinned by record tourism, strong migration, a construction boom and more recently the recovery in global dairy prices.

While that’s made it harder for firms to find skilled labour, something companies regularly com-

cent to 234,300. Rental, hiring and real estate services jumped 24 per cent to 51,200.

Stats NZ’s labour market data also included the labour cost index, which showed private sector wage inflation rose 0.4 per cent in the quarter for a 1.6 per cent annual increase.

Public sector wage inflation was up 0.4 per cent in the quarter for a 1.9 per cent annual gain, and across both sectors, wage inflation rose a quarterly 0.4 per cent and an annual 1.7 per cent.

About 16 per cent of private sector staff got a pay rise in the June quarter and 54 per cent had received a hike from a year earlier, for a median quarterly increase of 2.5 per cent and a 2.3 per cent annual increase.

The quarterly employment survey, also released yesterday, showed private sector ordinary time average hourly earnings rose 0.8 per cent to $28.04 in the June quarter and were 1.2 per cent higher than a year earlier. Public sector wages shrank 0.9 per cent to $38.47 in June for an annual gain of 4.1 per cent.

Dairy prices fall at global auction Dairy product prices fell at the Global Dairy Trade auction, declining for the third time in four auctions, amid concern about extra supply.

The GDT price index slid 1.6 per cent from the previous auction two weeks ago to $US3343. Some 32,768 tonnes of product was sold, up from 26,688 tonnes at the previous auction.

Whole milk powder rose 1.3 per cent to $US3155 a tonne.

“The market struggled to absorb the extra volume of product available on GDT which does not bode well for the coming months when offer volumes continue to lift in line with the seasonal lift in New

Zealand’s milk supply,” AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby said in a note.

At the latest GDT auction, butter fell 4.9 per cent to $US5747 a tonne, while anhydrous milk fat dropped 4.9 per cent to $US6289 a tonne.

“While milk-fat prices fell at the latest GDT event, they are still quite high historically,” Kilsby noted.

“The falls in the price indices at the August 1 event do indicate that buyers are starting to resist paying such high prices for milk fats.”

Cheddar fell 4.8 per cent to $US3932 a tonne, while rennet casein declined 4.4 per cent to

$US6122 a tonne.

Lactose retreated 4.3 per cent to $US787 a tonne, while skim milk powder decreased 3.0 per cent to $US1966 a tonne.

Bucking the trend, butter milk powder rose 0.4 per cent to $US2198 a tonne.

The New Zealand dollar last traded at 74.77 US cents at 2.30pm in New York, compared with 75.12 US cents at 5pm in Wellington the previous day.

There were 129 winning bidders out of 162 participating at the 14-round auction. The number of qualified bidders fell to 521, down from 525 at the previous auction.

China/New Zealand flights may increase Flights between New Zealand and China are set to significantly increase this year with the signing of new air services deals.

From a limit of seven a week just five years ago, nearly 60 flights now go in both directions, and Transport Minister Simon Bridges hopes this will soon increase to 70.

This would allow more flights, primarily by Chinese carriers, but he said Air New Zealand could expand its services too.

Myanmar and Angola have also asked to start formal negotiations.

Although air services agreements do not guarantee flights will start, they are required by international conventions and provide the foundations for services between countries.

overseas has risen five-fold in the past 38 years.

The attraction of New Zealand for tourists has also encouraged airlines to put on flights, but Kiwi holidaymakers benefit as they aim to fill northbound planes.

New Zealand has some of the most liberal open skies settings in the world and Bridges said consumers were benefiting from the surge in new airlines and routes.

The country had about 80 agreements or less formal arrangements around the world, including 30 negotiated in the past five years.

Upcoming negotiations were with Myanmar, Timor Leste, Kiribati, Jordan, Angola, Ecuador and Bolivia.

With the exception of Britain, European countries were “much higher fruit to pick and harder to

get to with some of their protectionist attitudes”, said Bridges.

Although barriers to flying between countries had been breaking down since the turn of the century, and even though the government had embraced a more liberal approach, Air New Zealand was benefiting from more destinations and partnerships and had weathered the competition.

The agreements could also allow any airline to fly domestically, which worries the New Zealand Air Line Pilots Association, already concerned about the risks of the safety standards dropping.

Bridges said he doubted another domestic operator would start up.

“I think there are number of things in the Asia Pacific that means those concerns are unlikely to be borne out. There’s a real shortage of pilots.”

Chicken nachos 450g Tegel Fresh Chicken Mince 1 clove garlic, crushed 35g packet taco seasoning mix 1C water 200g packet corn chips 1C grated cheese ■ Heat a dash of oil in frying pan.

Add Tegel Fresh Chicken Mince and garlic and cook for 4-5 min-

Age Concern would like to thank all who supported them at the recent “Good in the Hood” campaign run by Z Energy.

We were delighted to be part of such a generous promotion and extend grateful appreciation to Z Energy for their support of our community.

We have farewelled Barbara Kingsbury from the Age Concern Committee and acknowledge the contribution she has made during her years as a Board member. We are pleased to extend a very warm welcome to Jan McClelland, who has joined us on the Age Concern Board and look forward to the expertise and experience she brings to the organisation.

Director of Day Services, Adair Pethig, continues to offer a varied programme to all participants of Age Concern’s 206 Club. This programme, which includes a 2 course midday meal, is available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday weekly.

All enquiries welcomed at the Age Concern Office on 3086817, or at 206 Cameron Street.

Hospital visiting for out of town patients, under the direction of Raylene Phillips is providing a much appreciated service.

The “Steady as you Go” Falls Prevention programme is receiving ongoing referrals as the benefits of participation in this initiative are widely recognised, not only in our own district, but throughout New Zealand.

The Ladies Low Impact exercise class on a Thursday morning at the Senior Centre and the Hip Hop for seniors on a Wednesday morning at the Balmoral Hall are ongoing services offered by Age Concern, as are our Courtesy Drivers, Handymen, Gardeners and Advocacy.

Total Mobility assessment for half price taxi fares is also available at the Age Concern Office on 3086817 or call at 206 Cameron Street.

The Ashburton Paterson Trophy team recently travelled to Nelson to try and defend the trophy they had won the previously year. Things got off to a slow start for the team in the first two rounds with them finding themselves in 5th place out of six competing centres.

However, the team pulled together to progress up the leader board in the next 2 rounds to find themselves in second place with 1 round to play. Coming down to the last couple of games Ashburton came up just short with Canterbury walking away with the spoils on 116.5pts, Ashburton 111.5pts, Nelson 97pts, Golden Bay 83pts, Marlborough 69pts and West Coast with 63pts.

The Hensilite Singles has just been played, with the winner progressing through to the National Final in Nelson later in September.

Eighteen people competed in the event, with eight making it through qualifying.

Those being M Nordqvist, G Laird, M Lawson, N Chapman, M Sheard, K Mackenzie, G Chapman and M Bassett.

In the semis M Nordqvist defeated M Lawson 11-10 and M Bassett defeated K Mackenzie 10-4. In the final Bassett proved too strong for Nordqvist coming out on top 13-7. Well done Matt, we wish you all the very best at the national final!

Unfortunately, the latest representative fixture, The Quad tournament had to be cancelled this year, due to flooding and roads being closed, after a big weather event!

Good Luck to Taylor Mackenzie who will represent Ashburton at the NZIB National Junior Singles Final, which is being held at North Wellington on August 26!

Also, all the best to our local South Island Representatives, Michael Lawson and Matt Markham who begin their tour of the North this weekend and then play in the North vs South Test which is being played in Rotorua on August 12!

In spite of the recent inclement weather the club is managing to get through its winter programme.

Friday Triples played on July 28th which were postponed from the previous week were played in very cold conditions and everyone enjoyed the delicious hot soup during the afternoon provided by some of our members.

Clarke A few of our members have been having unscheduled “sleep-overs” in hospital recently. We wish them a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing them back on the Greens in the near future.

The fourth Wednesday of the month is meeting day at 9.45am in the Doris Linton Lounge at the RSA in Cox Street.

On July 26 a good attendance of members enjoyed the programme presided over by Bev Gregory. The mini-speaker morphed into six people, because the subject was “Favourite Poems” introduced by Barbara Barnes, Mavis Trott, Val Fleming, Pauline Scott, Audrey Leath and Qwenda Hanson all shared poems that they liked. Over morning tea further poems were shared among friends.

Main speaker Judy Glen is a consummate entertainer. When she visits her 107 year old mother in Ashburton having left balmy Sydney for the journey, Judy is eagerly sought as a speaker.

She soon has us laughing at her comical descriptions of dog-sitting, current T.V. advertisements and the joys of op. shop cloths.

We were then taught the four basic opera stage gestures.

Love: tenderly gather camellia blossoms to press against your breast. eg. La Traviata.

Hate: extend your arms sideways, hands raised, stiff wrists. eg. Tosca.

Happiness: up-raised arms above the head, smile. eg. Madame Butterfly.

Sadness: place one hand to forehead, turn head to the side. eg. Madame Butterfly.

Judy commented that she enjoyed the recent local musical production, “Children of Eden” and was particularly impressed by actor Luck Glendinning. To polish off the morning Judy sang unaccompanied “Summer-TIme” in her wonderful powerful voice.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club Attendances on club days is still very good, even though wet weather has seen us not able to play a couple of times.

We had to put off our trip to Papanui on July 23 because of the conditions of the roads. We like to think our players can get there and back safely.

Sunday 30 July we held our Club men’s and the Women’s singles, and the weather was very kind to us. One of the really pleasing things that hap-

www.guardianonline.co.nz pened was some of our members who have been playing for less than a year taking part, and giving the rest of us a run for our money. It is good to see the improvement in these players.

Results of the men’s singles were: Winner: Neville Bensdorp, Runner up: Richard Browne, and Third place: Stephen Kyle.

Women’s singles results were: Championship winner: Rosemary McLaughlin, Runner up: Karen Stephen, Third place: Marion Harrison, Plate winner: Ellen Pithie, Runner up: Bev Attewell and Third: Rewa Kyle.

Bowl winner: Karen Bensdorp, Runner up: Shelagh Field, and Third place: Betty King.

We had 18 members taking part all making it a very good day.

Our Canterbury Singles are next Saturday August 5 and we already have 24 entries, so we should see some interesting challenges.

Later in the month we have players heading to Dunedin to take part in 2 different tournaments down there, and we wish them well.

Club Days are still on a Tuesday and Thursday at 1.30 and anyone wanting to try their skills are most welcome, and we play on a Sunday at 9.30 to give the week day workers the opportunity to play.

Ashburton Organ Club Don Hopwood played in this evening.

Lovely music. Janet Smith welcomed us all to another evening’s entertainment and reminded members of the mid-winter Christmas Dinner on July 30.

Lorraine introduced the men’s singing group – John Harris, Colin Findlater, Allan Andrews, Ron Greygoose and Lester Tarbotton accompanied by Audrey Ritchie sang “Stone outside Dan Murphy’s door”, “Westering Home”, “Grandfathers Clock” and “Little Shoemaker”. Great harmony gents. Next up was Janet Smith on keyboard “Help yourself” and “He thinks I still care”.

Alan Andrews on keyboard played “Remembrance” (a real old favourite) and “Stranger on the Shore”, beautiful memories. Karen Smith on keyboard played “The Irish Wedding Song”, “Summer Wind” and “Danny Boy” – beautiful old tunes.

The raffles were drawn and some members were lucky.

Ron Greygoose sang “Pedro the Fisherman”, “Dark Haired Marie”, “My Ain Folk – so many talented members. Barbara Harris on keyboard played “Stardust”, “My Special Angel” and “Clarinet Polka”.

Bernard Reddecliffe on keyboard played “China Doll”, “O Sole Mio” and “Aint she Sweet”, another rousing performance.

Time for a cuppa and chat to finish another evening of wonderful memories.

Ashburton U3A A bitterly cold July morning was no match for the newly installed heat pumps at St. David’s Church as members and guests arrived to hear Jim Sole, Educator for The Brainwave Trust, speak on Unravelling the Mystery of the Adolescent Brain. A police officer for 27 years, a qualified Youth Aid Officer, Jim has specialised in family violence since 2000.

After a welcome and introduction from Edith Smith, Jim quickly got on to his topic in a presentation that was filled with thought provoking statements, laced with much humour and more than a few home truths pertinent to all parents and parents-to-be. Early years last forever and the importance of early nurturing could not be overstated in creating the capacity to deal with the road ahead.

Adolescence, a time of firsts, is an important 15 year period beginning around the 8 -10 year age through to the mid 20s. A time of transition from child to adult, to becoming independent of the parents yet also a time of still focussing mainly on self wants, almost to the exclusion of others’ wants. Life was simpler in youth naivety.

The Human Brain in transition where it is a mere 370g at birth, 955g by 1 year, 1180g by 3 years of age until adulthood when it is 1400g and we are able to make calculated decisions is an amazing journey. The Limbic area of the brain dominates teenage emotional responses akin to a turbo charged car, ie souped

up brain without the handling and braking ability that comes as we mature and the Cortex brain becomes more dominant allowing us to plan and have empathy. It is no accident that car insurance becomes cheaper from the age of 25.

The Psychological Tasks: physical changes, identity, peers, separation, sexuality, values and morality, learning, career choices to understanding the parents, adolescence presents a bewildering world of change and choice.

We are a social species who need social relationships where nurturing, gentle repetition are helpful to learning as opposed to anger and stress which will prevent this vital part of development.

Risk factors include poverty, domestic violence, childhood maltreatment, parental mental illness, absent father and poor parenting. Protective factors include strong family/whanau, family activities, secure mother attachment and schooling. Changes occurring in the sleep cycle lead to memory problems, school performance goes down, they become more emotional and accident prone. Managing multiple changes makes adolescents tired yet many achieve phenomenal statistics, (think some of our sports people) as they see the world in a different way. Social negotiation is complex during this transition.

Jim Sole’s advice is, instead of muttering under your breath at their frustrating behaviour/attitude, give your teenager a hug and tell them that it’s going to be okay.

Adriaan Slooten the demonstrated creating a wooden hat, using green sycamore, a vacuum chuck and several different chisels to complete the creation.

The block of wood was screwed on a ring chuck then rounded off, the top of the hat rounded into shape followed by the rim. Having left a foot on top of the hat he reversed chucked it and proceeded to hollow the centre. Using a lamp underneath the hat which shone through the wood enabled him to gauge the thinness of the wood, thus keeping it even.

With the amount of wet wood being removed the item began to dry quickly so with the aid of a water mist sprayer he was able to proceed removed the remainder of wood. When satisfied that the inside was completed the vacuum chuck was used to remove the foot. The hat did almost fit onto his head.

Coronation/Phoenix Target shooting clubs Last Friday the South Island Target Shooting Association passed the application of our new Target Shooting Mid Canterbury to join their body. It was extremely gratifying to have the support of so many other South Island Associations and a number of possibilities for future exchanges were offered.

In fact it looks as though the 2018 calendar is going to take a lot of managing.

This change in status makes it possible for our combined clubs to enter and host a number of events.

Already extra open championships are planned which will attract visiting shooters from around the Island.

A very exciting development. Now, to the week’s results. Newcomers Aaron Hunter, Wiek and Taten Claassens put

Speaker - Brian Glassey was welcomed

by President Pam and introduced to the Club. His subject was Pecking Order, with particular reference to the recent film of that name in which Brian played a leading role.

He talked about how it takes many months to take a hen on its journey from the egg to the National Show, and about some of the experiences and pitfalls to be found along the way.

The recent film took 350 hours of filming to produce eighty minutes’ showing time.

Brian was very amusing, especially when he talked about his own experiences having become well known to the general public, and some of the funny or strange things people say to him when they recognise him.

So close, but yet so far far away Mid Canterbury’s most recent Ranfurly Shield Challenge came against Hawke’s Bay in 2015.

Despite the 57-12 scoreline, it was one of the best efforts from Mid Canterbury in a challenge after leading 12-11 at the 50 minute mark.

Four penalties from first-five Murray Williams was not enough to see Mid Canterbury take the victory, with a flood of tries coming in the last 30 minutes.

RURAL WOMEN REPORTS Anama School holidays and sickness took a toll of the numbers of Anama Rural Women attending the AGM and July meeting.

However the weather was good, the scenery magnificent, the company convivial and the venue ideal.

The meeting was held at Panther’s Rock Café followed by a tasty lunch. The June meeting brought an excellent attendance of members and husbands together for a mid-winter celebration lunch at the Ryan home at Valetta.

Members were reminded of the regional meeting on July 28 and catering for Mayfield Lions meeting on August 1.

President Jackie Ryan gave her annual report commenting on how the 19 members are always willing to help and support each other in times of need and in branch activities. Having a monthly roster of hostesses and organisers of guest speakers shares the burden and gives some interesting outings and

stimulating guest speakers.

Funds raised by catering for Lions has enabled the branch to give to the Kaikoura earthquake appeal, the Ashburton Museum, Mayfield St John and Fire Brigade, Mt Somers Fire Brigade, Mid Canterbury Provincial and a very well received donation to Presbyterian Support for young women’s personal supplies.

Rural Women give education scholarships each year, Pauline Hewson and Glenis Nicol overseeing these important decisions. Speakers for the year have come from Safer Ashburton, Newcomers Network, a funeral director and Justices of the Peace. The branch has also visited the Clearwater dairy farm at Geraldine, the Ashburton Museum and Midland Apiaries.

Jackie extended her sympathy to Valmai Ludemann in the loss of Ernie and to those who had been ill during the year. She also thanked treasurer Betty and secretary Pat for their support dur-

Twenty-one members and one visitor met on the shortest day at Bedrock Café in Allenton and enjoyed a lovely lunch together.

A highlight of the day was Gwenda Hansen nominating her granddaughter Wilhelmina Hansen to become a member of Winchmore Branch, many members have watched Wilhelmina grow up over the years coming to branch meetings with her grandmother from a young age, we were all delighted to welcome her as a member of the branch.

The branch has decided to purchase a number of copies of the book “Safe with Dogs” and give them to Primary and Pre Schools in our district, these books come in two age groups and have lovely colourful pictures and good advice regarding keeping safe with dogs.

Elizabeth read the minutes of the last two meeting and gave finance report then all the correspondence was dealt with and reminded about regional conference at end of the month.

We then carried on with the AGM with Kerry taking the attendance and apologies and welcome as read from the general meeting.

Lynnford Thirteen members gathered at the home of Janice Peck for the July meeting and the Annual General Meeting which followed. Five apologies were accepted.

The proceeds from the raffle on the day are to go towards newly published books written by Pauline Blomfield: Copies of “Keep Me Safe” are to go to the local playcentres and the local schools are to receive copies of “How to keep safe with dogs” for the older children about being safe around dogs.

The Annual General Meeting was a relaxed atmosphere that the meeting was handed over to Amy Jones to conduct the elections of officers for the forthcoming year.

Marian Dent read president Bev Bagrie’s annual report and it showed that the Lynnford branch of Rural Women fully lived up to the objective “Service Simply Given” with all the activities they have participated in within the community over this past year.

There are 23 members and five life members of the branch.

Bev had previously said that she was standing down as president while she was involved in the Leadership Council, so an election for a new president was required.

Shield rugby’s crowning gem The Ranfurly Shield, colloquially known as the Log O’ Wood, is the crowning gem of New Zealand’s domestic rugby scene.

In 1902 Auckland became the first holders of the shield because in that year it had the best record of any Provincial Union (the blue and whites were unbeaten that year). In 1904 the first challenge was held and Wellington became the first side to win a shield challenge.

Since that first match, there have been more than 600 contests at grounds all around the country, every Provincial Union has challenged for the shield but only 17 have held it and shield fever continues unchecked as the shield inspires and unifies communities like no other trophy in New Zealand sport.

The Earl of Ranfurly, who donated the shield, was the patron of the then-New Zealand Rugby Football Union and Governor of New Zealand. The original prize was to be a cup but on its unveiling, was discovered to be a shield, with a centrepiece showing an association football match. The shield then underwent the first of a series of upgrades throughout its history, before being presented to Auckland.

Winners’ names are traditionally engraved on small shields, along with the years in which they held the shield.

In 2012 the last of these shields was filled in when Waikato lifted the shield, so the whole set was replaced to allow room for more winners in the future as well as recognising those teams who have held it.

Shield fever ran rampant in 2013 as Otago lifted the Log O’ Wood for the first time since 1957. Hawke’s Bay also tasted success with their first shield success since 1969. But the holders of the shield at the end of the year were first time holders Counties-Manakau.

In 2014, Hawke’s Bay wrested the shield back from Counties and went on to face 11 challengers before losing the prize to Waikato in the final challenge of 2015.

In 1933 Mid Canterbury’s first Ranfurly Shield challenge was accepted.

They were beaten, yet far from disgraced.

The Ashburton Guardian report of the match was both analytical and praising of the men known then as Ashburton County.

It read… “Despite its defeat the Ashburton team acquitted itself well considering it was its first match against a full presentative Canterbury team and its first attempt to gain the shield. Indeed, it has not been long since a fully-fledged Union had been formed in Ashburton to supersede the old sub union. Ashburton is the smallest major rugby football Union in New Zealand and the number of players from which to choose a representative team is comparatively small.”

Eighty-four years on and it would seem not much has changed.

Although still small, Mid Canterbury does punch well above its weight.

Mid Canterbury’s Shield History On 14 occasions Mid Canterbury have attempted to wrestle the pinnade of New Zealand rugby, the Ranfurly Shield, from the grasp of its holder and on 14 occasions they have come up empty-handed.

What started almost exactly 84 years ago, at Lancaster Park in Christchurch is still just as important now as it was back then.

The Log O’ Wood is still the major prize of provincial rugby. Its importance and stature, is second to none.

Known as Ashburton Country back in 1933, the local lads came up short – outdone by superior fitness in their 31-7 defeat with their points coming from a dropped goal (worth four points) and a penalty.

In 1938 Ashburton County had its second challenge against Southland at Rugby Park in Invercargill.

Two late tries gave the men from this region a sniff at the big prize, but eventually they fell short – losing 20-16.

Many described the moral victory for the match as sitting with the Ashburton side, but moral victories don’t help bring the shield home.

The very next year Ashburton County returned to Invercargill again but this time were dealt a hiding, losing 50-0 in a forgettable encounter.

It took 17 years for a fourth crack at the shield and in this time Ashburton County had become Mid Canterbury – although a new name failed to net a better result when they took on Canterbury for a second time.

Mid Canterbury went close again, but not close enough – losing 14-6.

The fifth challenge saw a trip to the North Island in 1958 where they travelled to New Plymouth to try and knock over Taranaki.

Mid Canterbury were left scoreless, but in a close affair allowed Taranaki to score 16 points.

In 1970 they took on Canterbury, again at Lancaster Park.

The mighty men from the Mid were valiant, but eventually lost 28-8. Three years later they went to Lansdowne Park in Blenheim but were defeated 36-9 by Marlborough.

Another challenge against Canterbury came in 1983 and it was another forgettable occasion with the red and blacks side, which featured surnames like Taylor, Deans and Hobbs – the final score was 28-0.

In 1985, two years later they had another shot – and potentially came the closest they ever have.

They lost 17-7 but trailed by just two at the break.

Challenge 10 came in 1989 – the first at the Ashburton Showgrounds. Mid Canterbury were outclassed 66-0 by an Auckland side littered with superstars including Grant Fox, John Kirwan, Sean Fitzpatrick and Zinzan Brooke.

The 11th challenge was slightly less souldamaging when they played Canterbury in Ashburton in 1995.

Although beaten 64-19, Mid Canterbury did score three tries in the match.

In 2002, Canterbury returned to Ashburton again and dished out a 78-10 hiding to their neighbours.

In 2014 they travelled to Pukekohe and gave Counties Manakau a huge fright before losing 46-10 and then the following year were beaten 57-12 in Napier by Hawke’s Bay

Ashburton were hard and willing but the side lacked the finesse which is necessary to win shield games, and the backs could not cope with their faster and more expert opponents.

Ashburton scored first and held the lead till the middle of the first spell, but as soon as the Canterbury backs established combinations the Ashburton men were run to a standstill. The score was 13-7 at halftime.

The Ashburton forwards fought hard all the way though they had every excuse to ease off. Whiting was prominent many times in the loose and the Doigs, Dalton and Thomas did a lot of good work.

Captain A.I Cottrell paid tribute to the Ashburton forwards, stating that they had played a clean hard and enjoyable game.

The day marked Canterbury’s first defence of the shield and Mr Cottrell recalled that it was an ex Ashburton player, Gordon Day, who had scored the try that won the Shield for Canterbury against Wellington.

Canterbury’s shield history Canterbury has consistently challenged Auckland’s status as New Zealand’s most successful rugby union. Games between the two have taken on the added intensity of North versus South and city versus country.

Auckland has won 13 of their 21 shield clashes (with one draw), and has ended Canterbury’s hold on the shield five times, in 1971, 1985, 1995, 2003 and 2007.

Canterbury’s first successful challenge was in 1927, when it beat Manawhenua 17–6 in Palmerston North.

Its first shield tenure of any length began in 1931 and ended in 1934 after 15 successful defences. Between 1953 and 1956 the Cantabs held onto the shield in 23 challenges.

The intense rivalry with Auckland was perfectly illustrated by the 1960 challenge.

A crowd of 30,000 – a record for a mid-week match – poured into Eden Park. The game started 10 minutes late after the Auckland team bus was held up in traffic. Meanwhile a Canterbury official tried to claim the shield by forfeit.

The lead changed several times during the match and with time almost up Canterbury led 18–14. More importantly, it had the feed to a scrum for what could well be the last play of the match. But Canterbury’s test hooker Denis Young lost a tight-head to Auckland’s Colin Currie.

The ball came to Mac Herewini, who with

a cross-kick found flanker, Waka Nathan, who ran 15 metres to score behind the posts. Mike Cormack’s conversion gave Auckland an improbable 19–18 victory.

Revenge was sweet when Canterbury lifted the shield from Auckland in 1972 – only to lose it in one of the biggest upsets in Ranfurly Shield history in the first challenge of 1973. Unheralded Marlborough stunned the rugby nation by winning 13–6.

The 1985 challenge in which Auckland ended Canterbury’s record-equalling tenure of 25 defences has been labelled the ‘Match of the Century’. In front of 52,000 fans, Grizz Wyllie’s Canterbury came back from 24–0 down at halftime to within a bounce of the ball of victory.

Having held on to win 28–23, Auckland set about creating a new benchmark of 61 consecutive defences.

Canterbury lifted the Ranfurly Shield last year from Waikato in a trip north to Mooloo Country.

It was the first time since 2010 that they had won the coveted trophy and the first time since 2011 they had played for it after their tenure lasted three matches.

After beating Waikato 29-23 they then fended off the challenge of North Harbour late last season 47-18.

They began their 2017 shield challenges with a 71-5 romp over Wanganui last month and now await the challenge of their closest neighbours, Mid Canterbury tomorrow.

When Jack Fleming was running round playing football in the green and gold of Mid Canterbury, he never expected to be facing off against former All Whites and his football idols.

Now the no-nonsense centreback wears the red and black of Christchurch’s Western in the Mainland Premier League.

On the ladder of football in New Zealand, this is as good as it gets, bar the Canterbury United Dragons in the ISPS Handa Premiership, New Zealand’s national football premiership.

Starting off playing for Eastern in the local Ashburton competition, Fleming first made the step up to Mid Canterbury for the 12th grade Japanese tournament.

“The Japanese teams were meant to come out here but it was the bird flu year so it was just a national tournament,” he said.

Only a few years later, at around age 15, Fleming was making his debut for the Mid Canterbury Seniors side.

“It was fun, it was definitely a step up,” he said.

“Everyone was a lot stronger than me because I was quite small.”

Fleming bounced between the youth and senior sides until he finished school and moved to Christchurch to attend university.

There, he moved to his current club Western, starting out in their reserve squad.

“It was definitely harder. It was a whole different level of com-

Fleming was handed his first start for the first team in the English Cup against Christchurch football giants CashTech.

“I was marking the top-goalscorer of all time in the league, Michael White, which was pretty challenging,” he said.

“Also there are the guys like Aaron Clapham and Ben Sigmund who were playing.

“You can tell they have played at that international level because they were the best players on the field by far.”

In the game, Fleming was given the unenviable task of mark-

ing Sigmund on corners.

“I think I only won one header against him,” he said.

Fleming’s first season could easily be labelled a success after he picked up the reserve team’s player of the year, the first team’s young player of the year and the most promising player award.

“Getting them was a pretty big surprise, I had only really spent a month in the first team,” he said.

Despite making the switch to Christchurch, Fleming was more than happy to pull on the Mid Canterbury kit for one more run at the Lotto U-19 Tournament in Christchurch.

It was at the tournament in 2015 where Fleming said one

of his proudest footballing moments came, when he scored the winning goal in the quarter-final against CashTech.

The side went on to finish fourth in the tournament, losing in the third/fourth playoff to Selwyn United 1-0.

Being a Manchester United fan growing up, Fleming said his favourite player was Wayne Rooney, while fellow centrebacks Carlos Puyol and Ben Sigmund provided inspiration.

Fleming said his main goals are to avoid relegation with Western this season, before focusing on picking up more wins and possibly picking up some silverware in the coming seasons.

The Western Sydney Wanderers scored in the last minute of extra time to beat the Wellington Phoenix 1-0 in their FFA Cup firstround match.

The home side broke the stalemate in Sydney through a far-post header from Spanish import Oriol Riera via a 120th-minute corner.

The result means the Phoenix exit the knockout competition in the round of 32 for the third time in four years.

However, it was a tenacious performance from a team missing several leading players and still to complete their roster under new coach Darije Kalezic.

An evenly-fought match featured few clear-cut chances but Kalezic was pleased with their discipline and the way they responded to a calf injury suffered

by Marco Rossi during the warmups, which ruled the Italian centre back out.

“Every loss is disappointing, especially tonight,” Kalezic said.

“But my feeling is a positive feeling because we performed well tonight, we played a good game – good structure, with good organisation and high discipline.”

The Phoenix were missing up to eight first-choice starters, forcing him to field a handful of academy players, including defender Liam Wood and midfielder Sarpreet Sing in starting roles.

They performed well, while new Croatian midfield signing Goran Paracki proved to be a stand-out figure at both ends of the field, linking well with the lively Roy Krishna in a wide right position.

“We start with a new age, a new period in Wellington Phoenix,” Kalezic said.

“This performance doesn’t give us any (insight) into the future, this performance tonight confirms only that how we’ve worked until now is right, and gives us trust to go in the same way to develop the team for the next two and a half months ahead of the (A-League season).”

Among the best performers for Western Sydney was midfield Roly Bonevacia, who finished a three-season stint with the Phoenix earlier this year.

College sides pick up wins Both Ashburton College Senior Basketball sides picked up big wins in their respective games on Tuesday evening.

The senior boys’ game against St Bede’s doubled as a match in the Canterbury Basketball Association’s under-20 competition.

The AshColl win cemented fifth place in the Thompson Trophy so far and second in the under-20 competition.

The Thompson Trophy takes a break next Tuesday before heading into the play-off stage on August 15. It is likely AshColl will face off against Shirley Boys, who only narrowly beat them in round robin play. Cashmere, Christs and Burnside were the top three.

Just Burnside sits ahead of AshColl in the under 20 competition, with it now breaking into round robins for the top six and bottom five.

St Bede’s put up an early fight at Oxford Street on Tuesday night and was still in the game at halftime when AshColl led 43-34.

But it was one-way traffic after that, AshColl up 75-30 at threequarter time and then 102-60 at the final whistle.

Coach Pip Johnston said confidence was high, even in the absence of centre Josh Lowe, currently playing a series of basketball tournaments in the United States with a view to earning a scholarship there.

Lowe’s understudy Harry Jackson was called into the starting five.

“He did a great job and did everything I asked him to do,” Johnston said. “This group is really coming together nicely and working for each other, which is great to see.”

While it was a group effort, there were a few standouts, noticeably captain Fletcher Arnold who led by example and scored a massive 40 points.

Nick Fechney (13p, 4r, 3b) and Fotu Hala (12p) were also big contributors.

“With five weeks to go until tournament, I’m happy with

where we are at the moment. We have got a great team here and the boys are pushing each other at training and it carries over into games.”

The Ashburton College Senior Girls, now 5-3 in competition play, hosted Rangiora High School (9-0) in round nine of the Whelan Trophy on Tuesday night.

College started strongly through the defensive efforts of guards Grace Adams and Liberty Ross. Steals were quickly turned into points and the College girls found themselves ahead 15-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Rangiora picked up its ball pressure in the second quarter, getting in the pockets of the College guards.

Grace Adams and Dani McArthur managed the extra attention, distributing the ball well on the break to Ashlee Strawbridge and Sophie Adams for a 31-11 halftime lead.

Rangiora found the bucket in the third quarter, with guard

Stella Porter picking up 9 of her 12 match points. Nevertheless, strong defence from Hannah Jerao and Taryn Douglas kept the College ahead 54-28 at the end of the third.

Picking up 14 of College’s 16 fourth quarter points, Sophie Adams continued her dominant form in the paint. Rangiora had no answer for the Adams sisters, with Sophie grabbing a season high 35 points and Grace knocking in 11 to go with a handful of steals, giving College the 70-36 win.

Coach, Andrew Shepherd, was happy with how his team adjusted to Rangiora’s ball pressure, “The games just get harder each week at this end of the season, so it’s great that the girls are stepping up. It’s what we need with the South Island qualifiers only five weeks away.”

Next week the College girls travel to Christchurch to take on one of the competition front runners, Christchurch Girls’ High School.

Lazarus a sure winner There is a State of Origin type feel about tonight’s Horse of the Year awards for harness racing – or maybe that should be stable of origin.

Call it what you want, but some of the key categories for the awards dinner have a mate against stablemate feel to them.

The big prize for the night will undoubtedly go to Lazarus, which is what happens when you win New Zealand’s biggest race by 10 lengths.

The fact the four-year-old won almost every other race he contested, and his idea of failure was a close third in the Miracle Mile, means the top prize was always going to be his.

Several other categories have obvious standouts – stars like Dream About Me (four-year-old pacing mare), Spanish Armada (three-year-old pacing filly), Enghien (three-year-old trotter) and The Orange Agent (aged pacing mare).

Aged Pacer of the Year and as the Inter-Dominon, South Australia and Ballarat Cup winner, as well as just being nosed out in the Miracle Mile, in many other seasons he would have carried off the Horse of the Year title. Alas, he will lose out to stablemate Lazarus.

But there are a few other awards though, that could have had voters scribbling out their first selection and changing their minds. And two of those also involve high profile stablemates.

The battle between stablemates Vincent (two Derbys and all-aged 2700m national record) and Ultimate Machete (Sires’ Stakes, Sales Series) in the glamorous three-year-old male pacing division, could be tight and may even come down to how much Australian Harness Racing the voters watch.

Ultimate Machete was so crushing before the New Year, pacing a national record in his

Sires’ Stakes stunner, and again in the Sales Series, it would have been impossible to think then, he could lose the title.

Then Vincent beat him fair and square in both the NSW and NZ Derbys, also winning the NSW Breeders Challenge and may actually be the better horse.

But wins closer to home, especially on the high profile New Zealand Cup and Jewels Day, always seem to count for more because almost all voters are watching, while late-night Australian races can often be missed or overlooked.

That could also be a factor in the Trotting Mare of the Year award, which because of the added value to future broodmare careers, is actually one of the most important of the night.

Early in the season Quite A Moment was the stamina queen, second in the Dominion and winning the National Trot before Habibti Ivy matched her by winning the Anzac Cup and

was second in the Rowe Cup. But Sunny Ruby was also brilliant at times in New Zealand and even more so in Australia, although that form again could be lost in the two hour time difference.

The stablemate versus stablemate theme will ring true for Trotter of the Year with Monbet clearly our best, and trotting two national records winning Group Ones, but his entire season was just three races long.

His younger stablemate Enghien completely dominated the three-year-old trotting division, winning all the serious prizes and was dominant for much longer, so while trainer Greg and Nina Hope will train the Trotter of the Year, which son of Love You is crowned won’t be confirmed until tomorrow.

Whether Dizzy Miss Lizzy’s Jewels win gets her home late, over Elle Mac in the juvenile pacing filly division is another of the more contentious awards.

Gingernuts’ spring preparation was furthered at Te Teko on Tuesday with the dual Group One winner enjoying a quiet 1000m trial. “He had a nice day out and he’s a lot bigger this year,” said Jamie Richards, who trains in partnership with Stephen Autridge. “He’ll probably trial again and kick off in the Tarzino Trophy at Hawke’s Bay. “He’ll be entered for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and whether he runs on the last two days at Hawke’s Bay before he goes we’re not sure just yet.”

CD breeding tour The central districts branch of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association will host an open tour on August 13. It will meet at Wellfield Lodge at 9am where yearlings by stallions including Fastnet Rock, Redoute’s Choice and Snitzel will be inspected and followed by a tour of Kamada Park then onto Little Avondale Park to view stallions Nadeem and Per Incanto and yearlings. “We’re really happy with him and once he learns what he’s doing he’s going to be a pretty talented horse,” said David Browne, who trains with his wife Emma-Lee.

Sport Who’s the coolest?

All Blacks Dan Carter and Sonny Bill Williams may have been two of the best rugby players in the world over recent years, but apparently they are also among the coolest.

Rugby website ruck.co.uk has cast its proverbial eye over the current crop of players, looking for “style, grace or just plain old badassery”. The website rated Dan Carter at number 5 and Sonny Bill Williams at number 2 with Quade Cooper at number 3. Their number one was Aussie rugby player Nick (Honey Badger) Cummins (above).

Hampstead will be hoping to keep their strong run of form going when they take on Southern tonight in Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competition.

With only two more rounds to go before the semi-finals, the fight is on between Mid Canterbury’s premier netball sides for the best position come knock-out time.

At the moment, it looks to be Celtic who will be leading the charge, having won all their games in this round of the competition.

After out-classing Ashburton

College last week, and dismantling United the week before, their opposition for tonight, Methven, have good grounds to be nervous.

Methven, who were showing positive signs of life themselves in the first two games of the round, were tripped up by Hampstead last week.

Hampstead look like they could be somewhat of a dark horse heading in to the pointy

end of the competition.

They will be facing Southern this week, who are still on the hunt for their first win in the premier competition.

In the final match of the premier round, Ashburton College will be looking to bounce back from the shock of a loss to Celtic and the dramatic injury to one of their players when they take on United.

United have picked up four

points so far this round with a victory over Southern, and have just as much chance as anyone to cause an upset.

In the premier 2 grade, division leaders Rakaia are set to take on Celtic C, who currently sit two points behind on the ladder.

Ashburton College B will be taking on Southern B, while Celtic B will be taking on Hampstead B.

Spithill in Auckland The America’s Cup has just arrived back in Auckland and look who’s not far behind ... Aussie Jimmy Spithill may have lost his grip on the Auld Mug for now, but the Oracle Team USA skipper has reminded Kiwis that he’ll feel right at home with an Auckland regatta in four years.

With the silverware sitting secure behind bulletproof glass less than a kilometre away, Spithill popped up at the Headquarters bar and restaurant in the city’s viaduct district, posing with owner Graham Murphy for a photo later posted on Facebook.

The loose forwards feature recent regulars, including Hurricanes lock/flanker Vaea Fifita and Ioane.

But, as it has all year, the midfield offers the main talking points. Charlie Ngatai’s return is a feel-good story after his longrunning battles with concussion and injury now hopefully behind him.

Likewise Buckman, the Hawke’s Bay and Highlanders favourite nicknamed “Barracuda” has been listed as a midfielder but he offers ability to cover outside back roles if needed.

His selection is reward for hard work and consistency over a number of years on both attack and defence.

Hooper Wallabies captain Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has backed his new captain Michael Hooper to lead the team through to the 2019 World Cup and predicts he will be at his peak by then. The NSW Waratahs openside flanker replaces long-serving Wallabies captain Stephen Moore, who has stepped down from the role ahead of his international retirement at the end of the season. Hooper has experience as skipper, having first stepped in when hooker Moore was injured in 2014.
