Rakaia reigns BY ERIN TASKER

Rakaia is Watters Cup country for the third year running after its rugby team produced a memorable second half comeback in Saturday’s final against Methven. With the most prestigious prize in Mid Canterbury rugby on the line, the large crowd went along to the Ashburton Showgrounds expecting a close, passionate and action-packed game, and that’s exactly what they got. And when referee Kevin Opele blew the final whistle, it was the men in blue who threw their arms up in the air jubilantly - the 32-20 win securing them the sought-after hat-trick. It was a classic game of two halves though

with many thinking Rakaia was down and out at half-time after a dominant performance by the men from Methven in the first 40 minutes, starving Rakaia of possession and allowing them few opportunities, to lead 17-3. But a different Rakaia side ran out onto the field after half-time and a contentious penalty try followed by a hattrick by star number eight Seta Koroitamana saw Rakaia run away with the title. Watters Cup hat-tricks are rare and for Rakaia to achieve the feat just a few short years after re-entering Mid Canterbury’s senior rugby ranks was a feat the team, and their coach Wayne Foxcroft were proud of. Methven on the other hand, had been

targeting a rare, yet-to-be-achieved, double – winning both the Combined Country Cup (between Mid and North Canterbury, and Ellesmere teams) and the Watters Cup in the same season. Methven coach Dale Palmer knew not to take anything for granted in a Watters Cup final. A few years ago they were down and out against Celtic before bouncing back to win the title, and while it was disappointing to be on the other side of the coin this time around, Palmer said he was proud of what his team had achieved this season.
