Safety rules will kill rural pools

There are not many clubs and organisations that can claim they’re still growing strong after 90 years, but one of those is Ashburton’s Cavendish Club.

Yesterday the club celebrated its 90th birthday with 36 of its members turning out for a lunch and cake-cutting.

Among those was the club’s longest-serving member, Betty Roberts. She’s been part of the club for 47 years and is now its patron.

At 94, she says she still enjoys

club meetings and takes pleasure in knowing membership is growing.

“We’re very lucky and I guess it’s because we’re a friendly club, we don’t have to fundraise and are very social,” she said.

For many years the Cavendish Club met in their own rooms on Wills Street, but in 2011 they decided to sell up and rent space in the Ashburton County Club.

Six years down the track it’s a move they’ve never regretted.

“It was a sensible move and the men enjoy it so much when we invite them to join in with us,”

Roberts said.

Their membership might be greying and well past retirement and it might boast several who are well past 90, but new members are still joining their ranks.

When members of many years standing joined, it was by invitation only. Potential members were nominated and had to be approved. Many who made the cut are still members more than 30 years on.

The club’s first president was the wife of mayor Ernest Bathurst.

Its oldest member is 99.

Tough new health and safety rules could see five rural swimming pools remain empty with their gates locked this summer.

Pools at Rakaia, Hinds, Mt Somers, Ruapuna and Mayfield are sited on Ashburton District Council reserve land and that means the council is responsible for ensuring the pools toe the line when it comes to safety issues.

Diving boards at Hinds and Rakaia may have to be removed, closing hours may be set that will need to be rigidly adhered to and trained volunteers may be needed to actively supervise when the pools are open.

And that, councillor Peter Reveley said at Thursday’s finance and business support meeting, could effectively see pool committees locking pool gates and walking away.

“The three on my patch will probably say they won’t be opening this year.”

Lynette Lovett was outraged.

“This is the death knell for small communities and their pools; we’re running against our small communities with this,” she said.

Stuart Wilson didn’t mince words.

“What do I think of this report?

It’s unprintable. I’m ashamed to be a councillor. Last year we had the pool people in and explained what they needed to do.

They did it and what do we do now? Stick the boot in well and truly. You’re killing these pools,” he said.

The recommendations in the report effectively meant pools on reserve land could no longer operate, Wilson said.

Council officers have assessed the way in which each pool is run against its legal safety requirements.

They have met with pool representatives and the council has held workshops, but at Thursday’s council finance and business support meeting staff dropped a bombshell.

They made six recommendations they said would ensure the council was meeting its obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

Rather than sign off the six staff recommendations, councillors opted to hold off a decision until they had spoken with the five pool committees.

Fisherman named Police have released the name of the man who died while fishing at Lake Coleridge on Wednesday.

He was 60-year-old, John William Morgan of Christchurch.

Morgan struck difficulty when he went to the aid of another fisherman on Wednesday night at the popular fishing venue near Mt Hutt and was last seen going under the water around 5pm.

An extensive search by mem-

bers of the Police National Dive Squad on Thursday initially looked set to yield no results until late on Thursday night when a body was discovered.

Through a statement yesterday, police are continuing to make enquiries into the tragic accident on behalf of the coroner and they also extended their sympathies to the family of the deceased.

Morgan’s family have asked for privacy at this tragic time.

Waste-free lunches introduced

St Joseph’s School pupils and parents are chasing an ambitious goal in the name of sustainability – completely rubbish-free lunchboxes by the end of term three.

In a bid for a cleaner planet, students are doing away with plastic wrap, yoghurt pottles and chip packets, and embracing ecofriendly alternatives like reusable containers and beeswax wraps, which they learned to make in a technology unit earlier this year.

Principal Cath Blacklow said the move was primarily about making students aware of sustainability and taking responsibility for the environment, but was also helping parents to opt for nutritious, healthy options for their children’s lunchboxes.

“A lot of the food that comes in wrappers – the chips, the muesli bars – they’re the ones that are full

of sugar and less healthy ingredients anyway.”

She said parents had been largely accepting of the idea, and that it had generated a lot of discussion.

“There will be people who don’t like it, but at the end of the day it’s just like having to come to school in uniform – it’s a part of the school culture.”

She said she had noted a contrast in the participation of younger students versus older Year 7 and 8 students who “aren’t as good at it”.

“It’s definitely about changing habits,” she said, “and the kids can’t do it on their own.”

It is understood that St Joseph’s is the first school in the district to pursue such a goal.

Though others, like Allenton School, have recycling schemes and try to discourage leftover rubbish, no other school has yet at-

tempted completely waste-free lunches.

“I totally agree with recycling and minimising as much as possible,” Allenton School principal Graham Smith said, “and we try to encourage children to take home leftover rubbish.”

He said he thought it was great that St Joseph’s was taking on the initiative, and would be interested in the results.

“But it’s a bit of a catch-22,” he said.

“The reality is it can be more expensive, and I think we’d find that not all parents can afford it.”

However, Blacklow said that rubbish-free lunchboxes could in fact be cost-effective for example purchasing items like yoghurt in bulk to put into a reusable container.

In a letter to parents she advised “reusable container = $3.00, our environment = priceless”.

Truck show postponed

Bad weather has put an end to the popular Ashburton Truck Show, at least for now.

Organisers made the tough decision on Thursday night to postpone the event after this week’s rain leaving them at high risk of turning the Ashburton Showgrounds into a mud-plug for the event set down for today.

With heavy machinery driving on the soft ground and more rain forecast for the 24 hours leading up to the event – the decision was, in hindsight, quite easy.

“It’s a shame,” Steve Keene, part of the organising committee said.

“But we need to protect that ground down the showgrounds and with more rain predicted we had to make a decision as early as possible.”

A new date had been set for a second attempt at the show, which ran for the first time last year, of Saturday, November 4.

All the conditions, and hopefully all the attractions that were supposed to be on show this weekend will be back on the list of attractions for the new date.

Ashburton – the scariest stage of all

Simon O’Neill may have been performing solo from the Royal Albert Hall BBC Proms to a crowd of millions just last week – but he says returning to his hometown of Ashburton to perform for old friends and family makes him “far more nervous”.

The internationally-renowned tenor took time from his demanding global schedule to perform at Night Among the Stars at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre

last night and tonight.

The concert was a fundraiser for Hospice Mid Canterbury.

O’Neill starred alongside singer, producer and radio personality Tim Beveridge; singer, dancer and actor Tizane McEvoy accompanied by Stephen Small, the MSA Men’s Choir and two Ashburton College choirs – Phoenix Rising and Phoenix Chorus.

While O’Neill resides mainly in London and Auckland, he says he is thrilled to touch base with his beginnings as a Phoenix Chorus

choirboy at Ashburton College.

“I love returning and I’m really proud to be back. I absolutely love it here … I have memories on every street.”

He said he couldn’t think of a more deserving group than the Mid Canterbury Hospice and he was blown away by the extreme generosity of Ashburton’s people.

“But I definitely feel more nervous performing here,” he said.

“I’m known for ‘big opera’ shows by my friends and family, and I will give [Night Among the Stars]

the same energy as my greatest performances.

“But it is scary, I think because I really don’t want to let the people of Ashburton down.”

O’Neill said some of the concert-goers would be old workmates from his student job at Fairton Freezing Works – many of whom he hadn’t seen for 25 years.

“I used to sing along as I worked on the chains, at the bit where you cut the lungs,” he said.

“That’s the place where I learned to work hard … and sing-

ing professionally is amazing, but it’s hard work.”

O’Neill says alongside the concert, he is also looking forward to relaxing and going skiing with his three children while in Ashburton.

Time with Thomas, Grace and Violet is precious, given that O’Neill spends eight to nine months of each year overseas, and they go to school in Auckland.

“They love it, love seeing where I grew up as well,” he said.

Container homes on the rise

Piling rusty shipping containers on your section and turning them into a home might not be illegal, but it might not win you any friends in your neighbourhood, a district planner says.

Shipping container homes are growing in popularity, but if you’re planning to build one in an urban area, then there are a few issues to consider first, says Ashburton District Council district planner Ian Hyde.

While the council did not have rules around the aesthetics of a building, neighbours could be concerned if they spotted a pile of shipping containers dumped on an empty section. A bit of forward planning could save a lot of angst further down the track, he said.

“We don’t have too many design constraints apart from things like recession planes and site coverage. Whether you’re building out of old shipping containers or any other material that’s up to you but, if you are considering building with shipping containers, talk to us first and we’ll work through it with you.”

In principle, if container houses were done properly there were unlikely to be any planning issues, but neighbours could be far from happy if a long term DIY build was going on next door, Hyde said.

“It’s about aesthetics, not having a section looking like the Hong Kong container wharf.”

People considering a container home would also need to check whether there were covenants on

the section they planned to buy.

In some cases these could ban relocated homes, he said.

“The council itself does not impose covenants and we wouldn’t want to put obstacles in the way.

If you want to do this, we suggest you come and talk to us about your timeline and your strategy so we’re prepared if anyone asks questions.”

Telling neighbours what you planned before work started was also a good idea, Hyde said.

“This is not something you’d expect next door. It’s about how it will be perceived across the fence. They may not be happy but at least they’ll appreciate the courtesy you’ve shown in talking to them.”

This year council’s building services team has fielded a growing number of enquiries from people keen to explore the shipping container home option, building services manager Michael Wong said.

Three consents had been granted, but the council had also been alerted to a number of containers that were being used as dwellings without a consent being issued.

“By definition, a container ceases to be a container the moment a hole is cut in it,” he said.

While containers could be used innovatively for houses, once the ends were removed a lot of the structural integrity was lost and the project would then need involvement from an engineer. In terms of consents, a container home moved through the same building consent process as a standard home, Wong said.

Staveley Bush Presbyterian Camp placed under covenant

Staveley Presbyterian Bush Camp celebrated a major pledge to protecting Ashburton’s biodiversity on Wednesday.

The camp is partnering with the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust to place 9.69 hectares of native bush under covenant, and protect it perpetually from anything that may threaten its lush shrubbery and wildlife.

The camp is the 26th habitat to be placed under covenant in the Ashburton District, and its staff say the move has been a long time in the making.

“We’re really pleased,” Barry Marett, vice chairman of the Staveley Camp Committee said.

Flock loads of birds no longer have to wing it on their own Flock loads of endangered birds have been given a helping hand thanks to predator control work, habitat protection and signage along the Ashburton / Hakatere River.

The Ashburton River is home to a large population of black billed gulls, black fronted terns, and spotted shags. These birds don’t have the easiest life, having to battle flooding, predators, and people.

As part of the predator control programme, 84 hedgehogs, 3 rats, 2 weasels have been caught.

Signage has also been installed to make sure river users take care around nesting sites – this includes keeping dogs under control.

Surveys in the Ashburton River carried out by Forest and Bird, DOC, and volunteers have identified breeding colonies of black billed gulls black fronted terns, spotted shags and other braided river birds. Environment Canterbury provided $26,000 in 2016/17 to fund the work to help protect braided river birds, a key priority of the Ashburton Zone Committee.

“It’s been about a six year process – but good things take time.”

He said the camp attracted a lot of visitors from Oamaru schools to scouts to craft groups.

The scout groups have been working on predator control, and the camp hopes the covenant will continue to inspire positive work towards conservation.

Georgie McLeod of the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust said the camp will be a great place for the next generation to learn about forests, learn to name birds, trees and ferns and help get rid of weeds and pests.

“With their help, the bush can continue to be vigorous and

healthy,” she said.

The Queen Elizabeth II National Trust is also celebrating its 40th anniversary this year – marking the occasion with cake and recollections of what they have achieved across the country since 1977.

The trust was established in 1977 by farmers and landowners, at a time when the government offered subsidies to encourage wetland and bush clearance on farms.

It now operates as a registered charity under the Queen Elizabeth the Second National Trust Act 1977.

Native covenants protect more than 1 per cent of New Zealand’s land in total.

Cantabrians hikoi against poverty

Eleven hardy Cantabrians set off from Ashburton yesterday with spirits high and signs raised, on the first leg of a 90km march against injustice.

The group are en route to Christchurch as part of Hikoi Whakaara – a march organised to rise up against New Zealand’s poverty, homelessness and inequality.

The walkers will journey up State Highway 1, stopping off in Rakaia last night and

Rolleston tonight, before a rally in Cathedral Square on Sunday.

They said they were grateful for the wonderful support of motorists slowing down as they passed.

NZTA had also jumped on board to provide a pilot vehicle.

The march was organised by the NZ Public Service Association, along with the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers. It was inspired by a similar march in the UK.

Eleven children at Merle Leask Kindergarten yesterday were “going on a bear hunt” and “going to catch a big one”.

For the Ashburton Kindergarten Association’s annual open day, they decided to throw a classic teddy bears’ picnic.

Head teacher Jacqueline ten Hove said

the children arrived in the morning to find a paw-print trail that took them around the kindy, through a tunnel, through grasslands and through mud.

The day also featured music, picnic food and teddy bear cookies.

Hove said it had been a fun day for all, and a group of vising parents had loved getting involved.

ASHBURTON HISTORIAN says climate change a myth

T

alk to Gilbert Donaldson about climate change and he’ll tell you it’s basically a lot of hot air.

Floods, snowstorms, high winds and droughts, they’ve always been on the Ashburton District’s weather radar and they always will be, the retired farmer says.

He’s kept weather data since he was a lad and at 82 he’s still keeping weather data.

“People talk about climate change but it hasn’t changed. It’s been like this since New Zealand was first settled. I’ve gone back over all the data, right back to the big snowstorm of 1867 when there was six or seven feet of snow in the foothills. And that was followed by a huge rainfall and then a nor’wester. There were huge floods.”

As July’s big rainfall and subsequent flooding around the Ashburton District become just a memory, Ashburton historian Gilbert Donaldson tells reporter Sue Newman that the weather event is just one more in a long chain of similar events that run back in time. That, he says, proves that climate change is a myth.

Gilbert’s a man who’s passionate about history, the weather, the people and the changing landscape. He’s written seven books and willingly shares his passion and knowledge as a speaker at local clubs and events.

“The one thing in all the change is that nothing changes in terms of the weather,” he said.

The huge rainfall and subsequent district-wide flooding in July were just part of the normal weather pattern that shows there’s a decent-sized flood about

every 17 years, Gilbert said.

He remembers the massive floods of 1945.

“Nine and a quarter inches fell in 24 hours. Up the Arundel Road above Hinds, the whole area around Hinds and halfway to Winslow was under two feet of water,” he said.

The Hinds River broke its banks above the township and the water flowed almost up to the windowsills in the post office. It topped the billiard table.

“Our Lanz tractor and trailer

were going down the drive to rescue a mob of lambs and the water was up to the axles. We had to go home and get the horse and dray,” he said.

That same year the district was hit by a massive snowstorm – two feet of snow covered all of Mid Canterbury, hills to sea and the big freeze that followed lasted for several weeks.

That was mirrored with snow storms in 1992 and 2006.

“It happened then and it’s still happening today. Nothing’s

changed and it won’t change either. The records prove that.”

Gilbert’s proud of being an unofficial keeper of the history, any kind of history. On top of his weather recordings, he’s written books that detail the history of several areas of the district and several organisations.

“History books are my thing, I’ve got a library full of them and I guess the weather is because it’s been so much a part of my life as a farmer.”

At 8pm the previous night a gauge in the middle of the Ashburton River showed the water was eight feet deep. 12 hours later it had dropped to six feet.

“At its peak the river was bank to bank, hu8rling itself against the railway and traffic bridges with waves from two to three feet high. Great logs and heaps of debris swept past bobbing like corks on the torrent,” the reporter wrote.

Several homes along the river were evacuated and “a home for elderly men was found at the Borough Council”.

Residents were evacutated from homes in South, Manse, Willow and Sudbury streets The swollen river attracted hundred of spectators and the bridge was closed to all but vehicles going to Tinwald.

Mill Creek was flowing at five feet above its normal level and water at Tinwald’s viaduct was eight feet deep.

Railway traffic between Ashburton and Christchurch was cancelled. Stock were washed away and many farmers watched recently harvested grain become victim to the flood waters, with sacks washed down the rivers.

Rural mail deliveries were cancelled and farmers worked overtime to rescue stranded motorists.

■ Cut whatever you are using as a wrapper into 15cm x 15cm squares or an approximation of this.

■ Spoon 1 heaped tablespoon of the chicken filling into the centre, fold in the sides and then the ends and secure with a toothpick to make a cute little flat bottomed parcel. These can now be refrigerated for up to 24

hours before steaming.

■ To steam, use a bamboo steamer if you have one or any normal steamer pot will do. Steam in batches, cooking for at least 15 to 20 minutes to ensure chicken is cooked through. Pile the parcels on to a platter.

Ruling ‘encouraging first step’

Three of the seven defendants argued there was no case against them but the judge ruled that two – RCI and James Hardie NZ Holdings – must remain in the action. ASXlisted James Hardie Industries also remains if the plaintiffs amend their claim, the judge decided.

Of the various causes of action, the judge said two could go ahead if they were amended by the plain-

tiffs and Adina Thorn, a lawyer acting for the owners, said that decision was “an encouraging first step”.

The judge outlined the case.

“The proceedings concern products and cladding systems manufactured and supplied by a company or companies within the group,” the judge said.

“The plaintiffs allege that they are the present or prior owners of houses or buildings clad with one or other of the products and that

the products were defective, not weathertight and failed to comply with prevailing building standards.

They allege that resulting moisture ingress has caused damage and loss and that as a result they have incurred various losses including costs of repair, replacement, diminution in value and loss of amenity, as well as emotional harm and distress,” she wrote.

James Hardie started in New Zealand in 1937 and Studorp sold its fibre cement business and manufacturing operations to James Hardie in 1998, she said.

The actions brought against the defendants were a breach of duty of care, breach of duty to warn or inform or withdraw the products, negligent misstatement and actions brought under the Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act. “The plaintiffs allege that the defendants knew, or ought to have known, from the early 1990s onwards that the products would be deficient and that on learning of these matters the defendants owed and breached a duty to warn, inform and/or to take reasonable

But should we have to? No.” Upon learning of the issues with the house Inglis sought a certificate of acceptance for the work which deviated from the original plans.

That was issued on March 28 and stated the work was excellent.

However, that held no sway with the tribunal, and an application for a rehearing had also been dismissed.

The couple had appealed the decision to the district court.

Inglis claims during the tenancy Parry, her partner and her son lived in the two bedrooms upstairs at the house and she sublet the downstairs area for her profit.

“It was leased to her and her son for cheap rent on the premise it was just for them,” he said.

“We got word ... she was ef-

fectively using it like a boarding house. There were cars for Africa and people came and went.”

He carried out a property inspection and found evidence of others living in the property, as well as damage.

After informing Parry she would have to leave the property, he was told about the home’s original plans and her intention to take him to the tribunal.

“I didn’t give it much credence,” Inglis said. “I didn’t think she had much of a case. The tribunal agreed with her that because part of the property wasn’t permitted it was untenantable.”

He could not believe she would behave the way she had, especially considering the agreement to rent it at a lower rate.

When contacted by the Otago Daily Times for her side of the story, Parry declined to comment.

Landlord ordered to pay $10k: ‘It’s been a nightmare’ A Dunedin landlord says he feels robbed after being ordered to refund more than $10,000 rent to a former tenant because of a legal technicality.

Vic Inglis says he and his wife are feeling “pretty dark and twisted” after the Tenancy Tribunal found Natalie Parry’s tenancy was unlawful – and therefore she was entitled to a refund of all rent paid – because unpermitted alterations had been made to the two-storey home’s downstairs area.

The couple bought the Luke Street house at auction as it now stands. Unbeknown to them alterations had deviated from the plans submitted to the Dunedin City Council during its build.

The couple lived in the home before renting it to Parry between July 30 last year and February 21.

Inglis conceded some fault lay with him as he had not sought a LIM report and the first time he saw plans for the home was when they were presented to him by Parry, as well as her intention to seek refund of all rent through the Tenancy Tribunal.

In April, the tribunal found Parry had entered into an unlawful tenancy due to the unpermitted work on the home’s bottom floor.

Due to that, section 137 (4) of the Residential Tenancies Act came into effect meaning Parry was entitled to a full refund of rent of $10,960.44. It also meant Inglis’ counter-claim for $3519 for compensation and exemplary damages could not proceed and was dismissed.

“It’s been the darkest six months

“The plaintiffs allege that in promoting the products, the defendants owed a duty of care to ensure that statements they made or caused to be made concerning the products were true and complete.

The plaintiffs allege the defendants breached this duty by making or authorising the JH statements, which the plaintiffs contend were inaccurate,” she wrote.

The judge said the defence from James Hardie NZ and RCI was that “they did not manufacture or supply or promote the products, they did not make or authorise the James Hardie statements, and the companies that did – Studorp and JHNZ - were not their agents”.

“JHNZH and RCIH submitted that they are not manufacturers for the purposes of the Consumer Guarantees Act and did not engage in the misleading or deceptive conduct alleged or make any representation falling within the Fair Trading Act,” the judge wrote.

She ruled that the second and fifth causes of action could proceed if they were amended.- NZME

Litigation has partially succeeded against building materials manufacturer and supplier James Hardie over allegations of weathertightness issues with its products.

Justice Mary Peters in the High Court at Auckland released a decision yesterday in the case heard last November for interlocutory or interim applications.

The case was brought by 365 plaintiffs with 1075 residential dwellings, units or buildings worth more than $200 million and five retirement village businesses of NZX-listed Metlifecare with properties at Te Rapa, Waitakere, Dannemora, Green Bay in west Auckland and Paraparaumu north of Wellington.

James Hardie’s Harditex, Monotek and Titan were installed at the properties, built between 1983 and 2010, although the vast majority of the claims are between 1994 and 2003, the judge said. Harditex was withdrawn from the New Zealand market on July 1, 2005, she said.

Ashburton’s darkest day is not forgotten

T

hree years on from Ashburton’s darkest day and the feelings are still very

raw.

Yesterday marked the anniversary of the day that our little town changed forever.

The day that all hell broke loose and a man walked into an office and ended the lives of two wonderful people and changed the lives of many others forever.

It’s a day that Ashburton arose from its usual sleepy state and turned chaotic.

We became a focal point for all of New Zealand. Eyes were on us that had never looked in this direction before.

And while three years is a long time, there’s still so much that needs to be answered about what went on during those horrific few moments in which Russell John Tully walked into the Work and Income office on Cass Street and opened fire.

We still ask why he did it?

How did it get to the point where he felt as though it was his only option?

How could it have been prevented? And how come we are still yet to see full justice brought upon someone who had the sole intent of injuring, killing or harming people?

And all for the sake of what?

A bed to sleep on at night and three-square meals a day. That’s what.

Driving past the former Work and Income office on Cass Street is a still a harrowing feeling.

Although its exterior and interior may no longer look the same, there’s an aura about the place that tells the story of what unfolded there.

And shudders ensue down the spine.

Your thoughts are automatically drawn towards Peg Noble and Leigh Cleveland, who had their lives tragically cut short, and the thought of the pain their families must go through on a day like yesterday.

But while yesterday was about sorrow, it was just as much about reflection and remembrance.

We reflect on what has come of the entire ordeal and we remember the lives of two wonderful ladies who had their time with us taken away, in the blink of an eye, sooner than it should have.

Knowing immediately that Peg would have been in the front line. Life will never be the same. Our Ashburton community as a whole was robbed that day.

Janine hubby myself and daughter were in Christchurch for the day for sporting tournament and son in lock down at school. just so glad my son remembered to take his phone to school that day so he could contact me. then arranging with a friend to have my son after school as I didn’t want him home alone while we were still in Christchurch. then when we did get back into town coming over the bridge with a helicopter flying low with arm defender handing out the door with rifle Christine My hubby phoning me to tell me about the shooting and being in shock

and running around the house like a crazy person because I couldnt contact my friend who worked there. So scared. Begged my hubby not to go into town. Sadness and anger that two women (one who i knew well for many years) were dead and wouldnt be going home from work that day.

Because I was feeling lazy and procrastinating, I decided to have another coffee first... and that’s when eight police cars from Timaru swept past. Checking the feed from police southern comms, I realized I will forever be grateful for that second cup of coffee.

YOUR VIEW Speed around school no new issue Sue Newman’s article in this morning’s (Friday) Guardian brought back an interesting memory.

When I was going to Lagmhor School in the early 1950s cars speeding past the school were also a problem.

We had a brilliant young teacher, Peter Bodkin, and I remember how we set up two field telephones (ex World War Two), one at each side of the school grounds and as a car came along past one station we would say “now” and the other station would press a stop watch and time the vehicle to the other side.

Bodkin had the distance measured and so with the elapsed time we could work out the speed of the vehicle in question and believe it or not we timed vehicles at over 65m/h or well over a 100km/h So the speed problems today are no different to what they were 65 years ago!

Then there were three

P

eter Dunne – he of the bowtie, bouffant hair and 30 years of faithful service to the nation, is the latest political leader to head for the hills.

He has deciphered the signs on the walls of Ohariu, to suggest he has “been there long enough” and should now find a seat on one of the back benches of life.

Reluctantly, and a tad tearfully, he has accepted the will of those to whom, for all those years, he has been their automatic choice to represent them in the Beehive.

What’s more, it doesn’t seem to have mattered to them which party he was standing for. He began as a Labour man and finished very much a National, even though he went through the motions of founding and leading various semi-political groups along the way.

His one, United Future, vote has often been crucial to keeping the National administration afloat for the last several parliaments. Post September 23, though, National will have to box on without him.

Since the elevation of Jacinda Ardern to the leadership of the Labour Party, any result other than a Labour victory looks most unlikely.

It could even be by an overall majority, in which case Dunne’s leaving of the scene will have even less impact. It will be reduced to a small footnote in the history of the 2017 Election.

Dunne has come to the conclusion that not only is he unable to prevent former police association president, Greg O’Connor from

winning the Ohariu electorate but also that National is very unlikely still to be in power on the morning of September 24.

The Green Party, despite the terms of its now discredited MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) has, after all, decided to run a candidate in Ohariu, which could have some impact on the vote for O’Conner.

However, with the Greens in their present permanent state of turmoil, the effect is not likely to be significant.z At least, Dunne’s certain successor, O’Connor, has already proved himself to be a man of the people – despite his strong advocacy for the police to be armed at all times – with an impressive record of handling every aspect of policing.

Dunne, therefore has the consolation of knowing he is leaving the electorate he loves in good hands.

Meanwhile, pundit piranhas are circling Jacinda snapping at her shapely ankles and clamouring for policies.

Do they not realise, in their frenzy, that Jacinda IS Labour’s policy?

Whatever she says is what goes.

She is mobile policy on the hoof

along the campaign trail, sweeping voters before her with a mix of brilliant, home-spun oratory and a heart-melting, girlish grin.

Policies that were tried and failed last time round are being recycled, such as a CGT (Capital Gains Tax).

With Jacinda’s imprimatur upon it, it is likely to find overwhelming support this time. Labour, at last, has a voice and a recognisable persona.

She has, though, it has to be said, in the ecstasy of her popularity, now added millions of dollars in what, coming from any other leader, would be described as election bribes.

But such is her current stratospheric standing in the nation, the word bribe simply cannot be attached to anything emanating from her. Only ordinary politicians offer bribes.

Thus, the bells of doom are ringing for Bill English and his jaded crew.

The Good Ship National is dead in the water, losing way, leaking copiously from every pore, and with little chance of a re-fit before September 23.

All members of the National caucus should be making plans for an extended period of “garden leave” ashore.

But wait!

Perhaps the Ship of State may not have to be scuttled after all.

The recent – and obligatory – opening of the Government Books, though showing a handsome surplus for the short term, painted a far less rosy picture

for the years still just over the horizon.

In a moment it showed that many of the political bribes on offer everywhere one looks, are not viable and must be taken from the table.

Thus, in particular, Labour is now having to consider cutting its many-faceted coat according to its cloth, something quick-onher-feet Jacinda seems already to have taken in her stride.

However, the financial revelations have certainly given the struggling sailors aboard the National boat a bony boost.

So hold onto your hats as they are for a bit longer, there’s a political maelstrom going on out there.

Who knows what will have survived when September 23 at last comes round?

Later news Winston incandescent (once again) over the “leak” of details regarding state pension over-payments he is said to have received during a period of seven years.

Unlike the Meteria debacle this “revelation” was clearly not meant for public consumption.

In fact, it may well be that in this case, unlike so many others, his anger is genuine and not of the synthetic, publicity-seeking variety.

rowing up, my world seemed pretty simple.

Being religious meant being a Christian. I didn’t know many Jews, Muslims, Hindus, or Buddhists. I didn’t even know anything about them.

So, what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus in today’s world?

To get this admittedly rhetorical conversation going, I’ll give you a definition of what it means to be a Christian. Your definition might differ from mine, but that’s okay.

A Christian is a follower of Jesus whose life is formed by a relationship with the God whom Jesus revealed to the world, when he took on flesh, lived, and died, and then was raised from the dead, so that in him all things might be made new.

Yes, and a Christian is someone who loves God with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength, and then loves one’s neighbour as oneself.

For us to stay in relationship with God, we must nourish that relationship by spending time in God’s presence. There are many spiritual practices that can aid in nurturing the faith we profess.

We can talk to God through our prayers and listen for God’s voice in quiet meditation.

We can read and contemplate the scriptures, aided by other devotional and theological works. There is music and there is nature, which stir our souls and lead us back to the God who made all of this possible.

Nurturing this relationship can and should happen both in moments spent alone with God

and in moments spent in the company of others – especially as we gather together at the Lord’s table.

This love for God, which is nurtured by our faith practices, should lead naturally to loving our neighbour. As the prophet Micah put it, God has called us to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).

As Christians living in the 21st Century, we face difficult and complicated questions, and often we don’t have a clear and unequivocal word from God. Issues like the environment, immigration, war, divorce, homosexuality, the use of drugs, and the elections all stand before us.

Devout Christians take stands on all sides of these issues, so, what should we do? It takes humility to stop and listen to the other side.

History can help us in this. Remember that in the 19th Century many Christians believed that it was okay to have slaves. After

all, Paul told slaves to obey their masters. It took a war to get our attention, but today most Christians abhor slavery.

It isn’t easy being a Christian.

But then justice, compassion, and humility doesn’t come easily.

Fortunately, we have a loving and gracious God, who is slow to anger and quick to show mercy.

God’s wondrous grace allows us to take risks. If we fall, the Spirit is there to lift us up.

So, as we consider our calling to be a Christian in today’s world and respond to the many questions and issues that face us, let us pray that God will grant each of us wisdom.

Blasts rock chemical plant At least two tons of highly unstable chemicals used in such products as plastics and paint exploded and burned at a flood-crippled plant near Houston yesterday, sending up a plume of acrid black smoke that stung the eyes and lungs.

The initial blaze at the Arkema Inc chemical plant burned out, but emergency crews continued to hold back because of the danger that eight other trailers containing the same compound could blow, too.

No serious injuries were reported. But the blast added a new hazard to Hurricane Harvey’s aftermath and raised questions about the adequacy of the company’s master plan to protect the public in the event of an emergency in the flood-prone Houston metropolitan area of 5.6 million people.

The Environmental Protection Agency and Texas environmental regulators called the health risks minimal in Crosby but urged residents downwind to stay indoors with windows closed to avoid inhaling the smoke.

Arkema had warned earlier in the week that an explosion of organic peroxides stored at the plant was imminent because Harvey’s floodwaters engulfed the backup generators and

Fifteen sheriff’s deputies complained of respiratory irritation. They were examined at a hospital and released.

The US Chemical Safety Board, an independent federal agency, launched an investigation into the accident.

The plant is along a corridor near Houston that contains one of the biggest concentrations of refineries, pipelines and chem-

ical plants in the country.

Andrea Morrow, a spokeswoman for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, said the agency had not received any reports of trouble at other chemical plants in the hurricane-stricken zone.

Rich Rennard, an executive at Arkema, said the chemical compounds were transferred to refrigerated containers after power was lost. But he said those containers failed too, causing the chemicals in one unit to burn.

Rescuers seek anyone left in floodwaters Rescuers have begun a search of tens of thousands of Houston homes, looking for anyone – alive or dead – who might have been left behind in Harvey’s floodwaters.

The disaster has now heavily damaged more than 37,000 homes and destroyed nearly 7000 others.

Hundreds of rescuers yelled “Fire department!” as they pounded with closed fists on doors, peered through windows and checked with neighbours.

The confirmed death toll stands at 31, though it is expected to rise.

Unlike during Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath in New Orleans, crews used GPS devices to log the homes they checked rather than spray painting neon Xs on the homes, which also avoided alerting potential thieves to vacant homes.

Meanwhile, a FEMA official said the agency was looking for ways to house people who lost their homes to Harvey.

The priority is to get them into some form of temporary housing, with hotels being one option, he said.

As the water receded in the nation’s fourth-largest city, the threat of major damage from the storm shifted to a region near the Texas-Louisiana border.

Beaumont, Texas, lost water service after its main pump station was overwhelmed by the swollen Neches River.

US tycoon accused of rape Escalating efforts to repatriate one of the ruling Communist Party’s most wanted exiles, Chinese police have opened an investigation on a new allegation, rape, against New York-based billionaire Guo Wengui, who has been releasing what he calls official secrets ahead of a pivotal party leadership conference.

Two Chinese officials with direct knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press that police are requesting a second Interpol arrest notice for Guo, 50, for the alleged sexual assault of a 28-year-old former personal assistant.

The rape allegation represents a new element in the sprawling case that Chinese prosecutors are building against the real estate tycoon, who is being investigated for at least 19 major criminal cases. Allegations against him include bribing a top Chinese intelligence official, kidnapping, fraud and money laundering.

Although the United States does not have an extradition agreement with China, Beijing hopes that a mounting body of

Senior US and Chinese officials have discussed the allegations against Guo, according to a third person with direct knowledge of the talks.

The Guo saga highlights how China’s efforts to repatriate elite Chinese seeking refuge on American soil have become increasingly contentious.

CIA warned Spain before attack occurred Madrid Spanish authorities were warned by the CIA that Islamic State was planning an assault well in advance of the recent terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spanish media reports.

Spanish security forces apparently received information at the end of May about a planned attack by the terrorist militia on Las Ramblas, Barcelona’s most famous street.

Catalonian Interior Minister Joaquim Forn confirmed information had been passed on to police, without saying from whom it came.

“We receive dozens of such tipoffs and treat them all the same way: We assess them and share

them with our security forces.”

The credibility of the information passed on in this particular instance was rated very low, Forn said.

But Catalan police denied having received the information.

“We received nothing from the CIA,” they said on their official Twitter account. “We defend our honour against those who want to discredit us.”

Sixteen people, including Australian boy Julian Cadman, were killed and more than 120 wounded when vehicles were deliberately rammed into pedestrians in Barcelona and the seaside resort of Cambrils on the night of August 17-18.

In recent months, Guo has become a widely followed social media presence by serving up sensational, if mostly unverifiable, tales of corruption and scandal within the Communist Party’s innermost sanctum, including among Xi’s closest allies.

Pressure on Guo has been building since April when Interpol issued a “red notice” seeking his arrest on corruption-related charges. Chinese authorities later

sentenced several of his employees for fraud in June.

Police in central China opened the rape investigation July 5 after a former employee came forward, the officials said.

In interviews with police, the woman described how she was plucked from her human resources position at Guo’s real estate company in Hong Kong in 2015 and sent overseas to become his personal assistant. The woman, whose identity is being withheld, said that over the next two years, she was raped several times by Guo, who she said demanded sex from female employees as a test of their loyalty.

In April, Guo told AP he believed the Interpol notice issued at the time amounted to “state intimidation” and that China had submitted bogus documents to the international police organisation.

Interpol declined to comment about the latest warrant China is seeking for Guo’s arrest, referring questions to national authorities as is the policy in ongoing investigations.

Isis leader al-Baghdadi probably still alive Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi appears to be still alive, a top US military commander said, contradicting Russia’s claims that it probably killed him months ago.

“Do I believe he’s alive? Yes,” said Army Lt. Gen Stephen Townsend.

At first, Townsend said his belief stemmed from a lack of evidence he had seen that al-Baghdadi was dead.

But he added: “There are also some indicators in intelligence channels that he’s alive.”

Russian officials said in June there was a “high probability” that al-Baghdadi died in a Russian airstrike on the outskirts of

Raqqa in Syria, a month earlier.

But Townsend said US and coalition forces are actively searching for al-Baghdadi.

If they find him, they probably will kill him rather than capture him, he said.

A good guess about where alBaghdadi is hiding, Townsend said, would be the so-called Middle Euphrates River Valley, stretching approximately from the city of Deir el-Zour in eastern Syria to the town of Rawa in western Iraq.

He said this area is shaping up to be Islamic State’s “last stand” after it was driven out of nearly all of northern Iraq.

In brief Mumbai collapse toll 18 At least 18 people have died and many are feared trapped after a building collapsed in India’s financial hub of Mumbai following torrential rains. Rescuers were searching for survivors at the site of the collapsed building. “The death toll has increased to 18 as more bodies have been found.

The death toll is expected to rise further,” said Tanaji Kamble, an official at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation disaster control unit. He said 14 people were injured and were taken to nearby hospitals. It was not clear how many people remained trapped.

The man in his 60s is in a critical condition in hospital after being found on fire at a home at about 9am yesterday. Queensland police say the man was involved in an altercation, and there is now an investigation into reports he was doused in petrol and set alight.

Trump announces cuts The Trump administration is announcing sharp cuts in programmes promoting health care enrolment under the Affordable Care Act for next year. In a call with reporters Health and Human Services officials said advertising will be cut to $US10 million for the 2018 open enrolment season.

Mid Canterbury have made two changes to their starting line-up in their bid to take down North Otago in the second game of the Heartland Championship in Oamaru today.

Openside flanker Kurt Polson has dropped to the bench in a swap for Hamish Mackenzie, while Christian Vainerere starts on the left wing in place of the injured Isireli Masiwini.

“Hamish has put in some energetic performances off the bench so we have decided to see what he can do when he is starting and if he can bring that same energy,” co-coach Craig Dunlea said.

“Isireli has a high-ankle sprain so we will have to wait and see what happens there, they can sometimes be tricky.”

The tight-five that dominated Poverty Bay last week remains the same, with the dominant Sam Finau making the No.8 po-

sition his own. With Nete Caucau recovering from injury, Tom Hanham-Carter starts at centre before leaving to join the Heartland U19 team for two weeks, partnered by Regan King at second-five.

“Nete will be playing for the A team so depending on how he goes he will hopefully be available for next week,” he said.

Double try-scorer Seta Koroitamana remains on the bench, with Timoci Nabakeke called

back in to the squad after turning out for the A squad the week before.

“He (Nabakeke) brings a lot of energy and he can be elusive sometimes so it will be good to see what he can bring off the bench,” he said.

The squad remains thin at the lock position, with Iromi Dawai ruled out for the rest of the season, the situation may end up like last week, with Phil Watson shifting into lock later in the

match. “It is just one of our whatif situations and we are thin there so we have that flexibility,” he said.

Dunlea said he is expecting North Otago to roll out some of their big guys in their forward pack, with potentially slippery conditions suiting the hosts.

“We don’t have the biggest pack in the competition but as long as we get our techniques right and do what we do well, we can do well,” he said.

Track cycling coach Cheatley resigns from head job Cycling New Zealand have lost head track coach Dayle Cheatley, who has walked away from his fulltime job in the sport.

Cheatley, 39, has been a key figure in CNZ’s high performance programme since 2008.

He believes he can no longer commit to the 24/7 demands of

the role through to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“The role requires a person to be able to give 100 per cent to the team and create an environment for the athletes to be the best they can be,” Cheatley said.

“I can no longer see myself being able to be that person fulltime and

I believe it is not right to carry on now and then find myself unable to give that 100 per cent commitment to the team in the critical period leading to Tokyo.”

Cheatley, who has raced bikes since he was 11, moved into coaching, including the national junior track cycling team to the world

championships, before being appointed to CNZ after the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

He played a key role in coach development as well as developing the-then defunct elite women’s track programme into the top four track nations in the world.

After the London Olympics,

Cheatley was elevated to the role of head coach, overseeing the programme to the Rio Olympics.

In his almost 10 years with the programme, New Zealand cyclists won seven world championship titles on the track among 35 medals in total, with only 11 medals in its history until 2009.

Ashburton multi-sport athlete Matthew Clough was one step closer to picking up that elusive gold medal at this year’s Under-19 World Aquathlon Championships.

Racing in Penticton, Canada, Clough finished second, a performance he said he was really happy with.

“The swim was quite choppy and I came out 45 seconds be-

hind second place, I had a quick transition and overtook someone,” he said.

“It was a pretty fast run and I overtook second with 1km to go and put 30 seconds on him by the finish, but first was quite a wee way away.

“They say finishing second is losing first but it didn’t feel like that because he was so far away there was nothing I could have done so I was really pleased.”

The 17-year-old, who finished

third in the event last year, will have one last crack at gold at the event next year, when the event is held in Denmark.

“Hopefully I will be able to win it next time,” he said.

Clough said the experience of the event as a whole was great, being able to meet new people and catch-up with people he had met at past events.

“I swam the open water course with a few of the Mexican guys that I met last time and did a bit

of running with some of the British guys,” he said.

“The New Zealand guys were just like one big family and there was lots of support the entire time. They were spread most of the way along the running course and even if they didn’t know you, they saw the silver fern and cheered you on.”

Clough will now turn his focus back to endurance racing, with his main goal of tackling the Coast to Coast next year.

‘Serena made me feel like a little girl’ Maria Sharapova has opened up about the first time she faced tennis rival Serena Williams and how the American made her feel like “a little girl”.

Sharapova and Serena first faced off on court in Miami, 13 years ago. Williams won in straight sets but Sharapova bounced back in their next meeting, the 2004 Wimbledon final.

“The first time I played against Serena was just a few months before I beat her at Wimbledon. I was blown away by her competitiveness, her physicality, her ability. She made me feel like a little girl – there are still times when she makes me feel like that,” she said.

The pair have clashed 21 times on the WTA Tour with Serena winning the last 18 meetings.

The duo last played each other at the 2016 Australian Open quarterfinals and it might be a while before tennis fans see them face off again with Williams currently awaiting the birth of her first child.

“People have talked about our relationship so much; we’re always put on these lists of who’s more marketable and who makes more money. Even though we’ve had our battles on and off the court, I believe both of us have an amazing amount of respect for each other. I wish we were linked more than ranked, that’s the way that I see it.”

Wellington remain unbeaten with win over Bay of Plenty Challenge hard on hands Wellington remain unbeaten in the Mitre 10 Cup Championship after thrashing Bay of Plenty 31-10 in Rotorua on Thursday.

The Lions crossed for five tries meaning they’ve now scored 16 tries in just three games to start the season with bonus point wins.

The victory moved Wellington nine points clear at the top of the Championship table.

Young Wellington hooker Asafo Aumua turned in another standout performance, scoring a try and led the attacking stats with nine defenders beaten and 81 metres made.

Wellington opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Malo Tuitama got on the end of an overlap to score a simple try.

However Wellington dominated the closing stages of the match with Wes Goosen and Aumua both scoring to guarantee a bonus point victory.

Wellington will look for four straight wins when they host Hawke’s Bay on Wednesday while the Steamers look to bounce back in Palmerston North next Friday.

Alex Gregory is a Cheltenham-born double Olympic gold medallist in the coxless fours from the 2012 and 2016 games, but undertook his toughest challenge a few weeks ago as part of an expedition to the Arctic.

Gregory and his crew’s mission proved beyond them though, and they had to take the decision to abandon their record-breaking adventure after becoming stranded on a remote Norweigan island part-way through what would have been a month-and-a-half long journey rowing the Arctic Ocean.

They are still awaiting their rescue and Alex said he took the decision for

the sake of his children. On Thursday he took to Facebook, posting a picture of his hands.

He captioned it: “My hands after spending so long in wet gloves. The blisters were never bad on this Polar row, but the wet & damp seeped into the skin ...”

Alex said earlier this week: “At times I thought I would never see land, my family or anything ever again.

“It’s an easy decision because I want to get home to my family.

“My three young children need their dad, they need him to be responsible and to make the right decisions in life.

“They need him to be brave, adventurous, ambitious and to set them the right example, but they also need him to not take unnecessary risks.”

Parker-Fury fight to go ahead The money is in the bank.

Joseph Parker’s WBO heavyweight title defence against Hughie Fury next month will proceed as planned after a purse payment of around $NZ2.1 million landed overnight.

Speculation in boxing circles was rife that Fury would pull out for a second occasion.

The big Brit claimed a dubious back injury prevented him from making the trip to New Zealand for the original May 6 fight with Parker.

Promoters Duco Events pushed ahead with that date, calling up sparring partner Razvan Cojanu as a replacement in an underwhelming event that saw them and Parker take financial hits.

Ahead of the reschedule title fight in Manchester on September 23, this time poor ticket sales were touted as casting major doubts over Fury’s participation.

As deadline loomed this weekend, Duco boss David Higgins was relieved to see the $US1.5 million purse payment turn up.

Papali’i aiming for ISP success Rookie Warriors forward Isaiah Papali’i has experienced the highs and lows in his debut NRL season but hopes the hard times have prepared him for bigger and better things next year.

The 18-year-old back-rower never expected to play first grade this season but now finds himself preparing to make his fifth appearance off the bench in tomorrow’s final round clash against Wests Tigers in Sydney.

While the 13th-placed Warriors have missed the NRL finals for a sixth straight year and are looking to avoid a club record nine straight losses in a season, Papali’i has been pleased with his own development and progression.

The former Mt Albert Grammar rugby star has his sights set on earning regular game time next year but is still hoping to achieve success in the coming weeks with the club’s reserve grade side in the Intrust Super Premiership finals.

“This season has exceeded my own expectations,” said Papali’i.

“I’m pretty stoked that he’s (coach Stephen Kearney) given me the opportunity this season.

“I feel I’ve put my best foot forward in all of the games I’ve been able to play.

“Hopefully next year I can build and get a few more games and go from there.

“That’s the goal. I feel like I can definitely make a big step forward going into next year – after winning the finals with ISP.” Papali’i admits it’s been a big learning curve, having played in the Under 20s NYC competition last season before being thrust into the NRL for the round one home match against the Knights.

Having been given a taste of the big time, he was then put back to reserve grade and made to wait, before injuries saw him called on again for the round 22 rematch in Newcastle.

Papali’i looked right at home in 12 appearances for the reserve grade side, who finished second in the regular season, although they’ll again be without him in Sunday’s week one playoff against Penrith at UOW Jubilee Oval (6pm kick-off NZT).

“We’ve got a strong group of boys heading into the finals which is definitely good for us as a club as well as a team.

“I’m looking forward to playing a part in that finals series after this weekend.”

Todd comes clean on partying The world of equestrian sport still enjoys something of a reputation, no doubt partly attributable to breathless Jilly Cooper novels, of wild hedonism and excess.

All those jodhpurs and heaving breeches and champagne and stately homes.

Sir Mark Todd, New Zealand’s greatest eventer, insists the reputation is misguided. Or if not misguided then certainly outdated.

Todd should know. The 61-yearold enjoys something of a reputation himself within the world of equestrianism. If not Rupert Campbell-Black – the smouldering, caddish star of Cooper’s series of romance novels – then definitely the life and soul of the party.

“I don’t know how I got that reputation,” he smiles.

Legend has it Todd was once found by the CEO of New Zealand’s governing body running naked down a street in Athens after a night out at the 2004 Olympics. He laughs.

Now 62, and with a tabloid sting behind him, Todd insists his days of wild partying are over. “I don’t know,” he says. “Maybe the young still do it. But I can’t perform the next day if I’ve had too hard a

“Well, it was all much more amateur back then. I think most sports have got way more professional haven’t they? And we have, too. I mean, we used to perform with hangovers most of the time.

But now, it’s just way more professional. And if you want to be competitive it does affect your judgment.”

A seven-time Olympian and twice an Olympic gold medallist, Todd will this weekend be at-

tempting to win his sixth Burghley title, 38 years after he went for his first.

It is a gruelling schedule for a rider now in his seventh decade, but Todd does not seem daunted in the slightest. Lean and agile, Todd stops the car every now and then to pick his way through the barriers keeping out the spectators to get a closer look at some of the jumps and fences.

“They call this one Storm Doris because the logs are from trees which came down in the storm,”

he explains of one zig-zag-shaped fence.

Pacing out the distance from one wooden corner to the next, Todd explains what the course designers are trying to do.

“You can’t take these ‘corner’ jumps too tight because the horse might just run sideways around it and you get 20 penalties,” he says.

“But take it too deep and ... it’s a long way from here to here.”

Todd – who rates himself “third or fourth favourite this weekend” – shows no sign of wanting to hang up his spurs. His horse, Leonidas II is 13 – “in his prime” – and you’re only as old as the horse you’re riding. “And I’ve actually got a really good young horse, too.”

Tokyo 2020 remains a possibility. “I definitely want to go to the world championships next year in America,” he says. “And then we’ll see. It’s only two years more after that, but two years when you’re 62 or 63 ... watch this space.”

Don’t write him off. Todd tried retiring once, after winning bronze at Sydney 2000, returning to Waikato with his wife, Carolyn, and their two children to breed horses. But he found it overrated,

eventually returning to the UK in 2008 to continue competing.

“I never thought I’d come back full time,” he says. “It was just a bit of a dare to see if I could make it back to the Olympics in six months.”

He could. But it cost him his marriage. He and Carolyn separated in 2009, although they remarried in 2014 and now live together again in Wiltshire.

“She is coming up later,” he says as we arrive back at his motor home in the competitors’ paddock where Zara Phillips – also competing this weekend on High Kingdom – and her husband Mike Tindall stop for a brief chat.

Later, they will all head off to Burghley House for a cocktail party.

Todd, having won best dressed man at Wednesday’s “trot-up”, where the competitors all parade their horses (and themselves), will no doubt be in hot demand. But he says he will just be looking forward to getting back to his motor home.

“We have friends coming over to our lorry for dinner,” he explains. “And I need an early night.”
