Fallen cop all but forgotten BY KATIE TODD

A police officer slain during one of New Zealand’s worst mass murders has been discovered in a grave in Ashburton, much to the curiosity of fellow officers. Constable Frederick Jordan was shot by Stanley Graham on the West Coast in 1941 and his overgrown headstone was uncovered in Ashburton Cemetery by former police officer Reon Blake of Mayfield last week. Blake is now hoping to find out how Jordan came to rest in Ashburton and if he has any remaining family in the district. Jordan was 26 years old when he died during the mass murder near Kowhitirangi, as one of the deranged farmer’s first two victims. Four police officers had approached Graham about a dispute with his neighbour when he shot and killed them, sparking one of New Zealand’s biggest recorded manhunts. Three civilians also died before Graham was finally located and shot 12 days later. Blake, who retired from the police force five years ago, said he’d volunteered to clean up Jordan’s grave after a woman in Auckland discovered his whereabouts.
